Christmas Christmas is coming...
A shining star amongst the special events that jam pack the modern calendar and the pleasures of 21st century life, Christmas has some extra special quality that sets it apart. As one of the most important Christian festivals, it is imbued with a significance that touches hearts and souls throughout the world with a
spirit of peace and hope.
Setting aside differences, renewing old friendships and remembering those in need or unhappy, people on every continent from Africa to Europe, Asia and the Americas, draw on the rich traditions of over 2000 years-ago and make their own very different preparations for the day. But everywhere the mood is the same-excited anticipation as they decorate homes, gather gifts and prepare special foods to celebrate the season’s message with family and friends.

Ormlie’s Christmas Cupcakes O rmlie Lodge, one of Hawke’s Bay’s most historic and luxurious conference and wedding venues, has recently undergone a renaissance, regaining its former style and elegance, thanks to its new owners Michael Coleman and Anna Geor. When the opportunity to buy Ormlie presented itself about a year ago they jumped at the chance to restore the lodge to its former glory and set about creating memories for new guests. The lodge, built in 1899 by William Nelson for his daughter Gertrude Smith, has been extensively and beautifully refurbished and is now
open for business. The restaurant, with its garden views, chandeliers and candles offers a beautiful, intimate atmosphere.
There’s a brand new team of handpicked staff including a very creative team of chefs catering to the small number of guests, those popping in for tea or coffee, diners in the restaurant and wedding parties. Opal Te Aho, a young qualified baker, crafts beautiful freshly baked breads and pastries daily. Her creativity extends to desserts and cakes but one speciality in particular demand is her cupcakes that are freshly baked daily and available at the lodge for morning or afternoon tea and to order. Her special mouth-watering creations for Hawke’s Bay Today, shown in the photographs, are Chocolate Peppermint Christmas Cupcakes with dark chocolate and peppermint essence filled with a ganache of cream and chocolate all decorated with icing and individual Christmas motifs – a sprig of holly, a red ribbon and a Christmas tree complete with baubles and a star. They’re such works of art it seems a shame to eat them but who could resist?

Choosing a barbecue I n the summer time when the weather is fine the delicious smell of bbqs drifts throughout the Bay as we enjoy the summer holidays. Summer is a time to relax in the company of friends and relatives while enjoying some well-earned
chilled drinks and delicious food cooked on a bbq.
Each year sees improvements in the design of bbqs. There’s so much choice it’s hard to narrow down the options to suit your personal lifestyle and budget. Choices range from
massive outdoor cooking systems, to patio bbqs and kettles, all in a range of colours and finishes. Many work on gas whole others on charcoal. The best advice is to do your homework first as it’s easy to rush into a decision and regret it later.
Talk to your friends about their bbqs and if possible attend a ‘Try before you buy’ session run by companies such as the Stihl Shop in Napier and read consumer reviews. Gas is convenient but some say it dries out food. Charcoal is preferred by many bbq fanatics as it can cook quickly but takes longer to heat up compared to gas, it seal in juices and imparts a smoky flavor. Consider how many you will be cooking for, will you want to take it to the bach or do you want something sturdier? Quality varies tremendously for example, cheaper bbqs are constructed of painted steel, rather than stainless or powder coated steel. They are less likely to last and may rust. Think about how much cleaning you want to do as some fat collection systems can be messy. Do you want a bbq with a lid and convection cooking facilities? Higher end models also offer extras such as built in thermometers and electronic ignition and there’s a good range of optional extras available. The best way to judge a bbq is to taste how well it cooks a steak.

• 8–10 wooden skewers 20cm long, although you can also use metal ones
Heat up the bbq, or a griddle e pan, and cook the kebabs for a minute te on each side (4 sides) and check to see if cooked – they may need a little longer. Ideally cook no more than medium. Cards from Christmas past T he tradition of sending Christmas cards to friends and family was initiated by Sir Henry Cole in England in 1843. Sir Henry found he was too busy to send his usual Christmas letters to all his friends and acquaintances so he commissioned the artist John Callcott Horsley to design a card for him to send instead.
and illustrated New Zealand’s links to a distant homeland.
Slowly, New Zealand Christmas cards started to reflect our own way of life with symbols and illustrations such as the Pink and White Terraces, silver ferns, tiki and New Zealand landscapes. By the 20th century the beach became a more
important national symbol and was expressed in Christmas cards featuring flowering pohutukawa trees and images of Santa Claus at the beach wearing the jandals. The selections of Christmas cards are from the Whanganui Regional Museum’s collection.
The card depicted three generations of a Victorian family drinking a toast to the recipient of the card, over a banner with the greeting ‘‘A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you’’. The first Christmas card was not a commercial success because it was too expensive and the design was criticised because it was thought to encourage drunkenness. Early Christmas cards were influenced by Valentine cards as they were made by the same designers and printers using the same processes and techniques, often substituting seasonal greetings and motifs. For example, robins began to appear from the 1850s as a substitute for cupids. By the late 19th century Christmas cards were showing all the secular iconography that we are today familiar with: robins, holly and mistletoe, Christmas trees, winter scenes and Father Christmas. All of these reflected a British way of life and interpretation of the festive season
