CelebratingMatarikiwith Northland’sMaramataka Queen

Thereare some days when we should just neverleave the houseand,according to aFar North“Maramataka Queen”, thewarningsare allthere,if only we’d slow down andlisten.

Andifanyone’slisteningtonature,it’s HeeniHoterene,whoappliesherown lunarenergycycleknowledgeand creditsitwithhelpinghersurvivethe stagefourterminalcancershewasdiagnosed within2020.

Heenihasbeenpracticingandeducating maramataka,thetraditionalMāorilunar calendarusedtoguideplanting,harvesting, fishingandhunting,aswellasbalanceinour everydaylives,formanyyears.

Maramatakameans‘everythingunderthe influenceofthemoon’anditisthetraditional Māoriwaybywhichtimeismarked.

Heeni’sknowledgeislearnedthrough acombinationfromhergrandparentsand, laterinlife,herchildren’sfather’sancestors, whospentthousandsofyearsobservingthe environmentandpassingontheirwisdomto successivegenerations.TodayHeeni,48,passes onthatknowledgefromtheirmanuscriptsand

diariesandthroughexperiencelivingoffthe landherself

“Ispentalotoftimewithmygrandparents andwasawaremygrandfatherplantedby themaramataka,”sherecalls.“Iwentto VictoriaUniversityandstudiedtereoMāori andanthropologybutI’mapractitioner,I believethatexpertknowledgecomesthrough experience.Ispentmanyyearslisteningtomy eldersandnowIamsharingthatknowledge

toempowerpeopletolivealifeoffreedom becausewe’vebecomesodisconnected andseparatedfromtheenvironment.Our maramatakaMāoriconnectsustothe environment.”

ItcameasasurprisetoHeenithatothers didn’tknowwhatsheknewbutshefoundthe yearningtolearnwastheresomadeither missiontorevivethepracticeofmaramataka. Duringlockdown,hersocialmediafollowing snowballed.

"Peoplewerefeelinganxiousandworried. Everyonewasathomewonderingwhatwas goingon.Itriedtogivetheminspirationand affirmations,allbasedonourindigenous knowledge.

"Later,womenwouldstopmeinthestreet andsay'thankyou,youreallyhelpedmeget throughthelockdown'."

Butwhilehelpingothers,shewasstruggling withherownhealthissuesandwasfinally deliveredadevastatingdiagnosisofstagefour terminalendometrialcancer,whichspreadto herlymphnodes,stomachandspine.

“Iwastold,withoutchemo,I’dbedead withintwomonthsand,withchemo,my lifespanwouldbetwoyearsifIwaslucky.I believedIwasgonnadie.Ithought,‘yougot me,yougotme’.Thatnight,thewallswere closinginandIhadthisfeelingofterror.Isaid tomyfamilythenextday,‘Ohwell,I’vehada goodlife’,andtheysaid,‘You’renotlikethis–you’reafighter’.

“ThenextnightIwokeupagainandthat feelingcameinbutIthought,‘StuffthisHeeni You’renotgoingtospendtherestofyourdays feelingscared’.Isaidtomyself:‘Whatdoyou know?’IbelieveinthepowerofbeingaMāori, soIusedmaramatakatoplanoutmyhealth journey.”

Aswellasanemergencyhysterectomy, followedbychemotherapyandradiation,Heeni saysthere’snotonealternativetreatment shehasn’ttriedbutitwasmaramatakawhich “helpedmewhenIwasupagainstamassive opponent”

“Iwokeuponedayandhadafeelingofsuch greatpower.Isaytomyself:‘Heeni,theone personyoucanrelyon,whohasgotyourback andlovesyou,isyou!’

“Mymothersaidtome,‘Youlivedsonow youhavetogiveback’.”

Heenirunsworkshopsaroundthecountry andworkswithschools,earlychildhood centresandteacherstoincludethepracticein theircurriculums.Herfollowinghasamassed 48,000onFacebookaloneand,everymorning beforedawn,sheoffersaneagerly-awaited affirmation.Maramataka’srevival,shebelieves, isduetopeople’sfeelingsofdisconnect.

“We’recelebratingnowthatwecanhave ourknowledgeinthelight.Itusedtobethat weweren’tallowedtotalkaboutit.ButIthink peoplefeeldisconnected.Theyknowthey’rea partofsomethingbuttheycan’texplaintheir disconnection.”

Atypicallunarmonthcycleisbelievedtolast around29.5days.Eachnightcarriesaname, accordingtothemaramataka.Forexample, Whiroisthefirstnightofthenewmoon,Tireaisthe secondnight,andsoonuntilMutuwhenua,thelast night.Thecyclestartsagainwiththeappearanceofthe nextnewmoon.

Accordingtothemaramataka,therearegoodand baddaysforplantingcropswiththethirddayafterthe newmoontheidealtimetoplant.Thegravitational pullofthemoonisthoughttoinfluencehowmuch waterisinthesoil.Theamountoflightcomingoffitis thoughttobeanothercontributingfactor Intermsoffishing,youcandoallthepreparation intheworld,rightdowntothefancyrodsandsnacks forthekidsbut,ifthelunarcycleisn’tcorrect,youwill comehomeempty-handed,saysHeeni,addingthat theTangaroamoon,towardtheendofthecycle,isthe besttimetogofishing.

“Ifwe’regoingtosurviveallthechangesofthe world,suchasglobalwarmingflooding,recession andlockdown,thenweneedtoadaptbecausewe’re actuallyreliantonotherpeopletofeedus.Andthat’s whereourunderstandingandconnectionwiththe environmentcomesin,”saysHeeni,wholivedoff-grid for12years

HeeniisalsoanAotearoarepresentativeofSlow FoodInternational,aglobalmovementworkingto preventthedisappearanceoflocalfoodculturesand traditionsandcounteracttheriseoffastliving.

"It'saboutaligningwiththeseasons,themoonand plantingandfishing,butthere'salsoarighttimefor communicationaccordingtothelunarcycleandaright timeforhavingmeetingsandself-care.

“Forexample,ifstaffmeetingswereplanned oncertainmoons,thenpeoplearemorelikelyto understandeachother.”

Anewmoonislinkedtolowenergyandnotagood dayformeetings.Likewise,forfishingandpeopleare

morepronetoaccidentsonthisday,saysHeeni.“It’s probablybestjusttostayathome.

“We’reexpectedtoalwaysbehigh-performingand onthego.Inthisworld,we’realwaystaughtit’sabout first-in,first-served.Butwithmaramataka,weknow there’salwaysaperiodofhigh-energyfollowedbyrest. Weareconnectedtotheenvironmentandwhenthe tidemoves,themoonpullsonus.Itisreallyaboutthe rightactionattherighttime.”

TheMatarikiPēwhairangiFestival isreturningforthethirdyear withaprogrammepackedfullof uniqueexperiencesandfeasts,all setinthestunningsurroundsof Northland’sBayofIslands.

Matariki,toHeeni,isaboutcelebratingthe uniqueNorthlandenvironmentmarkedbythe newmoonandthebigbrightstarPuanga.But it’snotatimeforbigcelebrations.

“Wintertimeistheseasonoflearning.It'satime forself-reflectionandsettinggoals.June,Julyand Augustiswhenyou’redoingyourmaramatakaplan andthinkingaboutwhatweneedinourlivestomake ourlivesbetter.We’resettinggoalsforourhealth, fitnessandbothprofessionalandself-development We’refixingwhat’sbroken.Thisiswhenourancestors wouldfixthefishinglinesandthegardeningtoolsin preparationforspring.

“Intermsofrelationships,we’rereallyreflecting andgoingwithinourselvestolookatwhatneedstobe donetoimproveourselves.We’restillnotasphysically activeandwereallywanttousethisseasontofigure outwhatweneedtodobeforespringcomesbecause springiswhenwe’reputtingourplansintoaction.

WhatisMatariki?

MatarikiistheMāorinamefortheclusterof starsalsoknownasthePleiades.Itrisesin midwinterandformanyMāori,itheraldsthe startofanewyear.IwiacrossNewZealand understandandcelebrateMatarikiindifferent waysandatdifferenttimes.

Somecelebratewhentheclusterisfirstseen inthedawnsky,othersafterthefullmoonrises oratthebeginningofthenextnewmoon.For someiwi,thestarclusterincludessevenstars, whileforothersithasnine.

Matarikiisanabbreviationof‘NgaMata oteArikiTawhirimatea(‘Theeyesofthegod Tawhirimatea’).AccordingtoMāoritradition, thegodofthewind,Tawhirimatea,wasso angrywhenhissiblingsseparatedtheirparents, RanginuitheskyfatherandPapatuanukuthe earthmother,thathetoreouthiseyesand threwthemintotheheavens.

Thecycleoflifeanddeath

Traditionally,Matarikiwasatimeto acknowledgethedeadandtoreleasetheir spiritstobecomestars.Itwasalsoatime toreflect,tobethankfultothegodsforthe harvest,tofeastandtosharethebountyofthe harvestwithfamilyandfriends.

•Matariki:thestarthatsignifieswell-being, reflection,hope,andthegatheringof people;consideredtobeafemalestarwhich istheguardianoftheotherstarsinthe cluster.ThenameMatarikidenotesboththis individualstarandthewholecluster.

•Waitī:thestarlinkedwithfreshwaterand foodthatcomesfromfreshwater.

MATARIKI

•Waitā:thestarlinkedwiththeoceanand foodthatcomesfromit

•Tupuānuku:thestarlinkedwithfoodthat growsintheground.

•Tupuārangi:thestarlinkedwithfoodthat comesfromtheskies:fruits,berries,and birds.

CalculatingMatariki

Traditionally,Māoriwerekeenobserversof thenightsky,determiningtimeofdayandthe changesofseasonsfromthestarsandusing themtonavigatetheoceans.Iwicalculated thebeginningandendingofMatariki differently,accordingtovariationsintheir localenvironmentandgeographyandtheir observationsofthepositionofthesun,and themoon.

TheMāoriyearisbasedonthelunarphases (cyclesofthemoon)andfollowsa354-day system.TheWesternEuropean(Gregorian) calendar,however,is365.25dayslong,basedon themovementoftheeartharoundthesun.This meansthatMatarikioccursondifferentdatesin theWesterncalendareachyear

Matarikisetsinthewesternskyduringthe lunarmonthofHaratua(mid-MaytoearlyJune). Thisisatohu(sign)thattheharvestseasonhas cometoanend.Bythistime,peopleshould havecompletedtheirpreparationsforthecold monthsahead.Matarikireappearsintheskiesin thelunarmonthofTeTahioPipiri(lateJuneor earlyJuly).Formanyiwithereturnofthestars marksthebeginningoftheMāoriNewYear.

Thecorrecttimeforcelebrationsofthe newyearisdeterminedbythepositionof boththestarsandthemoon.Therefore, althoughthestarsmaybevisibleinthesky, Matarikifestivitiesshouldnotcommenceuntil Tangaroa,thelastquartermoonofthefirst monthoftheMāoriyear.Thistimeusually comesafewdaysafterthefirstrisingof Matarikiabovethehorizon.

Matarikirevived

Matariki,orMāoriNewYear,celebrationswere oncepopular,buthadstoppedbythe1940s.In the2000s,theywererevived.Now,thousands ofpeopletakepartineventstohonourthe beginningoftheMāoriNewYear,andinwhanau celebrationstorememberthosewhohavedied andtoplanfortheyearahead.From2022,a publicholidaymarkingMatarikiisheldinJune orJulyeachyear

TheGovernmentcreatedanewpublicholiday forAotearoabypassingtheTeTuremōte HarareiTūmatanuioTeKahuioMatariki/Te KahuioMatarikiPublicHolidayAct.

TheBill,TePiremōteHarareiTumatanuio TeKahuioMatariki/TeKāhuioMatarikiPublic HolidayBill,wasonlythefifthduallanguage BilltobeintroducedtoourParliament

ThisyearMatarikiwillbecelebratedon Friday14July2023.

TheGovernmenthascommittedtoensuring mataurangaMāoriisattheheartofcelebrations oftheMatarikipublicholiday,anditwillbea timefor:

•Remembrance–Honouringthosewehave lostsincethelastrisingofMatariki. Māoritraditionallygreetedthefirstsightings ofMatarikiwithexpressionsofgriefforthose whohaddiedsinceitslastappearance.A ceremonycalled‘whangaiitehautapu’was heldatthistimetorememberthedead.This alsoinvolved‘feedingthestars’withspecially preparedfoods.

•Celebratingthepresent–Gathering togethertogivethanksforwhatwehave. Oncethetimeofgriefwasover,the emphasisofMatarikishiftedtocelebration. BecauseMatarikihappenedattheendof harvesting,therewasanabundantsupplyof foodforfeasting.Peoplerejoiced,sang,and dancedtocelebratethechangeofseasonand newbeginnings.

•Lookingtothefuture–Lookingforwardto thepromiseofanewyear

Matarikiwasalsoatimeforplanningforthe yearahead.Ifthestarswereclearandbright,it signalledafavourableandproductiveseason ahead,andplantingwouldbegininSeptember Ifthestarsappearedhazyandcloselybunched together,acoldwinterwasinstoreandplanting wasputoffuntilOctober
