Whanganui District Council maintains off-street car parks and a network of on-street meters and time-restricted areas that are monitored by parking officers.

There are 615 kerbside metered parking spaces and 1118 timerestricted areas around the central city area. These are monitored to ensure regular turnover and availability of spaces. Infringers are ticketed, fined and followed up. Suburbs are serviced on demand.

Paid parking is between 8.00am and 5.30pm weekdays and Saturdays. The parking services team patrols on a regular basis, including on Saturdays. Typical parking charges are: • Victoria Avenue – $2.00 per hour • Drews Avenue – $1.00 per hour (for a maximum of two hours) • Taupo Quay – $1.00 per hour (for a maximum of two hours) • Inner-city side streets – $1.00 per hour (time limit varies, check meters for times) • Pay-and-display – 50 cents per hour • Rentals – $20.00 per week Please note the Drews Avenue parking precinct is a pay-and-display area, while Taupo Quay’s on-street parking is pay-by-plate. Off-street leased car park spaces are available in the following locations: Kingsway (51 spaces) and the Royal Wanganui Opera House (17) in St Hill Street, Phoenix (12) in Drews Avenue, Drews Avenue (8), Regent (19) in Ingestre Street, Museum (22) and Hannah’s (47) in Drews Avenue, as well as Taupo Quay (32). All off-street car parks are sealed, marked, have security lighting and are signposted. The following parks –Winstone, Wharenui, Phoenix and Moutoa (which is Taupo Quay offstreet parking) – have pay-and-display machines installed while Taupo Quay’s on-street parks use a pay-by-plate machine.

PARKING INFRINGEMENTS Failure to buy parking in a pay-anddisplay or pay-by-plate area will incur a $40.00 infringement fee. Expired parking or exceeding the time limit in all areas will incur an infringement starting at $12.00. Depending on the length of stay this may be up to $57.00, calculated on a graduating scale.

PARKMATE The ParkMate smartphone app used for paying for parking – and a range of other features such as car park availability – is available at all councilowned pay-and-display car parks in Whanganui. ParkMate is also available for Drews Avenue parks and Taupo Quay’s on-street parks. The app can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play.

SUPERGOLD CARD SENIOR PARKING SCHEME Holders of the SuperGold Card – a scheme for seniors and veterans – can apply to the council for a permit to display in their vehicle, which gives them free parking between 8.00am and 11.00am, Monday to Friday, in the Central Business District area. Please note that even though parking is available free in these areas for SuperGold Card holders during these times, the time limits set for parking spaces still apply. This applies to the area contained within St Hill Street, Taupo Quay, Drews Avenue, Watt Street, Wicksteed Street and Ingestre Street and includes all metered parking spaces. WHANGANUI AIRPORT Whanganui Airport’s long-term car park is controlled by a parking meter located in the terminal building that accepts coins and credit cards. You need to enter your registration plate number to pay – the cost is $10.00 per day (24 hours) or part thereof. A transaction fee of 50c applies if a credit card is used. The car park is open from before the first morning flight until after the last incoming aircraft, and is secured and monitored at all other times.
