Welcome to Whanganui
– The River City
Whanganui was one of the first cities to be founded in New Zealand. Whanganui, meaning ‘big bay’ or ‘big harbour’, comes from the great river that flows through it. Home to approximately 48,700 people, Whanganui New Zealand, is one of New Zealand’s oldest settler towns. It is picturesque and has much to show off to the visitor. It’s just a couple of hours’ drive from Wellington, Mount Ruapehu and Mount Tongariro, or a quick flight from Auckland. A designated motorhome friendly city, Whanganui encourages self-drive travellers year-round. Prominent heritage buildings in the city include the Royal Whanganui Opera House and the Sarjeant Art Gallery. Whanganui is home to New Zealand’s largest arts community with more fine arts, mixed media and glass artists than anywhere else in the country. Be sure to experience everything Whanganui has to offer including the Riverboat Cruise, Durie Hill Tower and Elevator, The Opera House, Virginia Lake, Bason Botanic Gardens, Kai Iwi Beach and the Whanganui Regional Museum. Whanganui doesn’t only offer a cultural and nature rich experience there is some brilliant shopping to be done including the well-known Victoria Avenue retail outlets, Trafalgar Square and the Saturday River Market. To top all of this off we are spoilt for choice in terms of eating out with a wide variety of establishments ranging from different international cuisines to fine dining. Whanganui was crowned the Most Beautiful City in New Zealand for both 2019 and Most Beautiful Small City in 2020. In 2021 it was again a finalist but missed out for the Small City award, however is in the nomination again for 2023. You will certainly be able to see why when wandering around our lovely city. Ridgway Street with its beautiful cherry blossom trees, historical buildings, Watt Fountain and breathtaking wall art, was named the Best Street in New Zealand 2020.
