End of the Old Kingdom / Beginning of the First Intermediate Period, Dynasties VII-VIII, Ca. 2181 - 2160 BC

Starting Price: £10000

A beautiful limestone Egyptian false door consisting of a recessed central panel surrounded by two columns and one upper register of inscribed hieroglyphs. It belonged to Ima, a high official at the royal court, as shown in his titles: “King’s acquaintance”, “King’s nobleman of the house of the dignitaries” and “ Inspector of the spear(?)”. This title is a unicum, in fact it is not found in other known monuments. This false door has all the canonical parts: the decorated torus, the upper lintel, the outer door jambs, the lower lintel and the inner jambs. Between the inner jambs there is a narrow niche suggesting the entrance to a door with a rolled-up mat (drum) above it. In the space between the outer jambs there is a panel with a scene in sunk-relief : the deceased seated in front of the offering table. He is also depicted in sunk-relief on the outer jambs, standing up, looking inwards, with the emblems of his rank, the staff and the sceptre, in his hands. In the inner right jamb, a standing up woman is depicted in sunkrelief, looking inwards, with a lotus flower in her right hand. Above her figure a hieroglyphic text reports her titles and name: “King’s acquaintance, priestess of Hathor, Pef”, she is probably Ima’s wife. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art Accession Number: 64.100 (model).

Her headdress resembles a vulture, with its wings draped behind her ears, lappets down to her breasts, and a pair of ostrich feather plumes partially visible on top. 206. LARGE PAIR OF ROMAN MARBLE HARPOCRATES FIGURES

Ca. AD 100-300

Starting Price: £5000

A pair of exquisite Roman marble statues depicting the Roman god of silence, secrets and confidentiality, Harpocrates. The statues depict the god with a short, chubby body, elbow resting on a pillar in a slight contrapposto pose. The heads of the statues are nearly identical, with broad, flat noses, full lips and small, heavy-lidded eyes, all framed by luxurious curling locks of hair that cascade to the shoulders. There is some differentiation between the figures, as one is depicted with a pot belly and less developed pectoral muscles than the other. Harpocrates, a god of Graeco-Egyptian origin, was the son of Isis and Osiris and was frequently represented as a chubby infant or young man with his finger to his mouth, making these examples rare variations of the type. He was assimilated into Roman religion, and the aforementioned gesture, once signifying youth, was misinterpreted by the Romans as a sign of silence (Ovid, Meta., 9.688ff).

207. IMPORTANT OVER LIFE SIZE MARBLE PORTRAIT OF A SEVERAN LADY, POSSIBLY JULIA DOMNA

Ca. Early 3rd century AD

Starting Price: £20000

An over-life-sized portrait, gracefully sculpted, the Empress is portrayed as a mature woman, her oval-shaped face is smooth with a round dimpled chin. Her bow-shaped lips are gently ajar, her characteristic bulging almond-shaped eyes articulated with kidney-shaped pupils and drilled irises, her upper lids drooping, the bridge of her slender nose merging with her gracefully arching brows, their feathering lightly incised, her hair parted in the centre and cascading in undulating waves, framing her face and concealing most of her ears, with a thin braid above the waves, all pulled back into an elaborately braided chignon, with a wispy tendril in lower relief before each ear, and a single tendril falling on the left side of her neck. These details given by the sculptor are a testament to the portrait’s realism and heighten the contrast between the gentle, relaxed, motionless face of the subject and her wavy, heavy, voluminous hairstyle. This portrait thus reflects part of the daily life of Roman women. For similar see: Christie’s, Antiquities 8890, 5 October 2000, lot 241; Yale University of Art, Accession Number 2010.143.1; Musee de Louvre, Accession Number: MNB 783: MA 1104. Cf. 231. PAIR OF ROMAN HEAVY SOLID GOLD BOW BROOCHES - 116 GRAMS

232. LARGE ROMAN MARBLE FIGURE OF CUPID HOLDING GRAPES- EX R. SORGE COLLECTION

Ca. 200 AD

A finely carved in extremely high relief ‘virtually in the round’ section of a marble sarcophagus depicting the god Eros (Roman Cupid) or one of the Erotes (Roman Cupids) holding a large bunch of harvested grapes in his left hand. Eros, depicted as a nude cherub, is posed standing in contrapposto, with his weight shifted to his left leg, one arm angled to carry the fruit of the vine, the other missing its forearm, perhaps once carrying more grapes (a common theme of Hellenistic and Roman art) or his bow. In addition to possessing an impressive understanding of anatomy and an ability to render flesh from stone, the sculptor of this piece was skilled in communicating naturalism in Cupid’s facial features - generously lidded, almond-shaped eyes, apple cheeks, pudgy nose, and full lips - framed by a wavy coiffure adorned by a leafy crown. Eros was the mischievous yet endearing god of love and, according to some classical writers, a son of the goddess Aphrodite.

233. ROMAN MARBLE RELIEF WITH SOLDIER

Ca. AD 100

Starting Price: £3000

A beautiful relief carved marble panel featuring a helmeted soldier and robed man, both in profile with their heads to the right. The first man is slightly higher in placement, perhaps suggesting higher status, such as a general. His face is thin, consisting of an aquiline nose and short beard and curly coiffure. The top of his robe or toga is draped around his shoulders. Before him is the soldier with a curly beard who wears a crested helmet. Perhaps this scene depicted a procession or event marking a military triumph. The Romans developed new forms of public monuments to celebrate their military victories, including arches and columns. These architectural masterpieces have been found throughout the Roman Empire and are often relief carved with Roman soldiers. This fragment may come from one such relief and is an impressive testament to Roman military and artistic achievements.

320. MEDIEVAL GOLD PENDANT WITH CRUCIFIX

321. THE ROXWELL’ MEDIEVAL GOLD SIGNET RING OF ‘KING’S SERJEANT WILLIAM SKRENE’

Ca. AD 1300 - 1400

Starting Price: £10000

A gold ring composed of a round hoop and discoid bezel with an ropework border. It depicts an image of a bird of prey perching with wings spread and head turned. It has an inscription in an arc above the bird’s head ‘·al : for : ye : best ·’ (all for the best). The ring’s find location is close to an estate which was owned in the 14th century by the Skrene family and which included among their number a senior barrister and sergeant-at-law named William Skrene who was an Irish-born barrister and judge. The family name lives on to the present day at Roxwell with Skreens Park and for local road names nearby. William spent his professional life in England, being appointed King’s Serjeant and a judge of assize, as well as Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer in 1395-7. In addition to the estate at Roxwell, he acquired various lands in Essex, including at Writtle, Great Finborough and Stanford Rivers. William died in 1419-20 and left sons and a daughter; his heir, also called William, married Alice Tyrrell, widow of Hamo Strange, and daughter of John Tyrrell, who was Speaker of the House of Commons of England for three terms.

The exact combination of motto and crest or badge has eluded researchers thus far. However, the ring was found near Roxwell, Essex, and evidently belonged to a person of some wealth and status given the quantity of gold used in its manufacture and the quality of the workmanship. The style of the ring is close in appearance to a number of early 15th century examples, which began to appear with the badge and motto rather than the full armorial bearings, so it is very possible that this is the personal signet ring of William Skrene, or possibly of his sons, William or Thomas.
