Apollo Art Auctions is proud to announce the ‘Fine Islamic, Indian & Chinese Art’ Auction’ taking place on the 14th of December.
The auction will showcase a selection of exceptional Islamic, Indian, Chinese, Korean and Tibetan pieces dating between the 30th century BC to 19th century AD. It will be held at our central London showroom, 63 – 64 Margaret Street, W1W 8SW, and online via the Apollo Art Auctions platform at 1 p.m. GMT.
The sale is led by a selection of Islamic and Indian art with distinguished provenances such as Henri René d’Allemagne and Marquis de Ganay. Highlights include A Moulded Pottery Tile Panela, an exceptional moulded pottery tile wall panel of turquoise and cobalt, almost complete with one reference to be found of similar design in the book by Gonul, Oney, ‘CERAMIC TILES IN ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE’. A Seljuk Gilded Bronze Candlestick with Kufic inscriptions, and inlays, very fine condition.
The auction also features an array of Chinese works of art, with items coming from the collections of Phillip Allen and the Estate of Roslyn Willett. Noteworthy pieces include a Nepalese Licchavi Period Gilded Bronze Seated Bodhisattva, the piece from a period that built foundation for Himalayan Buddhist art and a Pair of Chinese Blue and White Square Porcelain Vases with Wooden Lids, considered to be a friendly beginner piece and a signature of the Ming dynasty.

9A. SILVER INCENSE BURNER IN THE SHAPE OF AN ELEPHANT WITH A RIDER

A silver elephant shaped incense burner engraved with the master’s signature - “Fazil worked” or in Arabic “Faisal worked” to the back of the animals neck. The animal with rounded eyes standing foursquare with head held straight between pointed tusks, the body covered with a beaded harness and a saddle rug decorated with floral motifs, leading towards a openwork pyramid-shaped lid with an interlocking design. The rider, depicted wearing an ornate jacket with a high collar, and armed with a knife. The image of an elephant in Sogdian art is known from the paintings of the palace complex in Penjikent, the Red Hall, the palace in Varakhsh, in Uzbekistan, toward the end of the 7th - and the beginning of the 8th centuries, with the image of tigers attacking a warrior sitting atop a war elephant. Elephant images are also often found to be used within Sogdian fabrics of the 8th-9th centuries.

A wall panel of rectangular form painted with cobalt-blue and turquoise, the surface moulded with floral relief detailing, containing six central stellar cobalt-blue glazed sections for each formed square, surrounded by bands of glazed cobalt-blue as well as other greenish turquoise geometric shapes, all framed within an outer border of scrolling vine stucco with cusped foliage and cobalt background.

An oil lamp with a rounded oil compartment, featuring an upturned spout and protruding knobs on the sides. At the back, a loop handle with a bird-shaped finial is attached, while the domed lid is topped with a smaller bird perched atop it. 30. GHAZNAVID CANDLESTICK WITH STYLISED FLORAL MOTIFS

A bronze candlestick with a traditional form, featuring a truncated conical base. The shoulder is designed with a depressed inner circle and a projecting rim, from which rises a short cylindrical neck at the centre. The solid, conical candle holder is decorated with an arabesque, while the neck is adorned with a vegetal motif over scrollwork. One is decorated with an interior court scene with a seated Prince and a servant in two niches surrounded by numerous adult courtiers with children and musicians, and a peacock perched upon a zoomorphic bench, with a decorative outer band of floral panels with eight feline masks. 43. OTTOMAN OR MAMLUK CHAMFRON

A steel chamfron boxed over each side of the muzzle and flanged around the eyes, the flat rectangular steel cheek plates attached to either side of the chamfron with short chain mail links, with integrated convex blinkers, featuring central cartouche designs to the bridge of the nose, and a central gold fixture to the centre of the forehead for holding a banner or plume. The chamfron, a type of armour designed to protect a horse’s head in battle, and shaped to fit over the horse’s forehead, extending down to cover the cheeks and nose.

44. OTTOMAN OR MAMLUK STEEL CHAMFRON
Ca. 16th Century AD
A steel chamfron, or baraki, with eye guards, and mail links to the head of the plate. The piece is formed of a single piece of steel and tapers towards the bottom by the nose. The plate is flanged with shallow grooves on the plate which follow the contours of the eyes and ears and continues to the muzzle. At the top of the plate is a raised crest holder or plume socket, and beneath it appears the engraved Ottoman arsenal mark (tan_a) of St. Irene. This chamfron was designed for an Ottoman heavy cavalryman and would have covered the forehead of the horse. It was an essential piece of armour in battle. Some chamfrons of this kind were made from tombak (gilt copper) while others were made of steel. A talismanic shirt, or Jama, with Arabic inscriptions on both front and back in Naskh/Thuluth script, surrounded by geometric motifs. This type of garment was believed to offer the wearer luck and protection and was another way of wearing a talisman on one’s body, providing guidance and protection to the wearer against the evil eye and providing protection in battle. ‘Jama’ Shirts like this were worn by soldiers underneath battle attire providing a spiritual shield when engaging the enemy.

A large framed basalt inscriptional tile panel, likely a verse from the Qur’an that is commonly used on such dedicatory panels. This example using basalt, a type of stone found in the eastern Deccan that was used for decorative purposes in many types of buildings. Ceramic tiles, and epigraphic friezes executed in ceramic tile were integral to the decorative program of interiors in both Morocco and Spain. They were situated near eye-level, between a dado of tile mosaic and upper-wall decoration of carved stucco.

A gold plaquette of rectangular shape with slightly rounded corners. These plaquettes were produced by squeezing two thin sheets of gold between a positive and a negative die. The impression will be very accurate because the sheets of gold are pure, thin and soft, which resulted in a precise ‘squeeze’.

A group of metalwork comprising a bucket-shaped bronze mortar, decorated with four frontal bird figures, possibly hawks, and two opposing ridges with handles, one of which is pierced. Included in the group is a large Ghaznavid brass magic bowl, high in zinc and copper content, adorned with twelve portrait heads in roundels, connected by crescent panels, each featuring incised Arabic calligraphy below. Also featured is a Ghaznavid brass shallow bowl, centrally engraved with a war elephant carrying an armed rider with banners, surrounded by the twelve zodiac signs, each inscribed with its Arabic or Farsi name around the circumference. Finally, a Khorassan brass ewer of typical form is included, decorated with engraved images and calligraphy, notably without any silver or copper inlay.
