Apollo Art Auctions is proud to announce the ‘Fine Ancient Art & Jewellery – the Prince Collection’ auction taking place on the 15th of December.

The auction will showcase a wide selection of Egyptian, Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Asian antiquities ranging from 40th century BC to 16th century AD. The sale will be held at our central London showroom, 63 – 64 Margaret Street, W1W 8SW, and online via the Apollo Art Auctions platform, at 10.30 a.m. GMT.

The wide range of antiquities are coming from the renowned Prince Collection. The lots hold distinguished provenances featuring names and institutions such as Jean-Paul Barbier Mueller (1930 – 2016), Robert Hatfield Ellsworth (1929 – 2014), Edith Bader Koller, W. Arnold Meijer, Kurt Flimm, A. Obrecht, Jacques H. Carre, Jean-Marie Talleux (1930-1995), the Khawam brothers and the Thalassic Collection.

Highlights include lot 1, an Egyptian Amarna Period Sandstone Relief Depicting the Pharaoh Worshipping the God Aton who was the last known Egyptian Pharaoh to worship ancient Egyptian gods. Lot 3, a Rare Egyptian Granite Head of a Pharaoh, reviewed by Simone Musso, consultant curator for Egyptian antiquities at the Stibbert Museum. Lot 130, a matching Pair of Greek Gold Earrings with Vibrant Carnelian Dolphins and lot 273, a Rare Babylonian Terracotta Head of Marduk with Horned Tiara, he was known to be the god of creation and the patron god of the city of Babylon.

1. EGYPTIAN AMARNA PERIOD SANDSTONE RELIEF DEPICTING THE PHARAOH WORSHIPPING THE GOD ATON

A remarkable sandstone low relief from the Amarna period. A pharaoh, probably Amenhotep IV / Akhenaton, is depicted with a crowned head, arms, and body in profile, worshipping the rays of the god Aton. This well-defined sculpture features clear boundary lines and a homogeneous depth of engraving. A sandstone relief showing two figures facing left. The features are well defined, with long Nemes covering the forehead and the neck; the faces are elongated with plump lips surmounted by a long and straight nose and almond-shaped eyes. A black granite head of a sphynx of a pharaoh of the XXVth Dynasty, probably Taharqa (690-971 BC). The pharaoh’s face presents defined and elegant facial features, almond-shaped eyes, full lips, a prominent nose, and a contemplative expression. He wears the nemes headdress with a frontal uraeus cobra. PAINTED ALABASTER JAR WITH PAPYRUS FLOWERS - SCARCE

New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, Reign of Ramsess II, Ca. 1279 - 1213 BC

A beautiful jar of utilitarian form, carved from creamy honey-yellow alabaster with opaque white veining throughout. The piriform vessel features a hemispherical base, a smooth shoulder that tapers to form a corseted neckline, and a thick rim surrounding the mouth of the vessel. Middle Kingdom, Ca. 2055 - 1790 BC

A marvellous carved black stone ritual mortar of relatively cylindric form with high walls. The deep basin was perhaps able to hold ample amounts of material, from food and medicinal ingredients to substances pulverised into colourful pigments. On the external surface, in high relief, two standing figures, probably priests, represented frontally with a long skirt covering the lower part of the body and with the other naked and wearing a long wig alternating to vertical lines of hieroglyphic inscription. 5. RARE EGYPTIAN BLACK STONE RITUAL MORTAR

Late Period, Mid Dynasty 26th, Ca. 610 - 570 BC

A basalt bust of an imposing pharaoh. He stares forward with prominent facial details and protruding ears under a nemes headdress. The face is framed by the sides of the headdress, and the lappets hang down to rest on the broad shoulders. The reverse of the head is well defined, and part of the nemes extends down the centre of his spine. This bust may have been created as a standalone object rather than a piece from a larger statue. It is indefinite who this model was meant to represent, though the refined quality and sophisticated presentation indicate it was likely a pharaoh of this period. A rare and slender wooden carving head of Harpocrates or a youth. The finely detailed portrait features Horus’ nude upper body with delineated musculature and his signature sidelock of youth draped down his shoulder from his bald head. The overall physiognomy comprises petite eyes, a broad nose, and prominent lips.

A smooth, flat, grey schist palette in the form of a ram featuring a rounded body and a small projecting foot and head. 12. RARE EGYPTIAN STEATITE HEAD OF HATHOR WITH GOLD INLAID EYES

A steatite head, possibly representing Hathor or a worshipper of Hathor. It features distinct facial characteristics and gold-inlaid eyes. The large, intricately detailed wig cascades around the face, framing the distinct ears. At the front of the piece, a bronze uraeus is positioned prominently. The woman stands in a striding pose with delineated legs and a smooth lower abdomen, with full breasts below sloped shoulders and slender arms draped at her sides. A greywacke statuette of a high official of the pharaoh Nacho II from the XXVI Dynasty, hand-carved from black basalt. The high official is represented with arms at the sides of the hips, marked facial features, and ears clearly shown on the sides, wearing a long wig. At the centre of the chest is the cartouche. A tall bottle made from green/blue glass, its elegant silhouette exhibits a rounded shoulder above the carinated body and a narrowing neck surmounted by an everted lip. The glass surfaces showcase impressive lustre and smooth textures, given their age. Around the larger part of the body, a decoration comprised of diagonal lines alternating white and black and a wave white and yellow pattern adorned the neck. A turquoise glazed faience tile, part of the over thirty thousand faience tiles found in the funerary complex of Pharaoh Djoser, along with a sky blue glazed faience tile of a similar style that was probably used in a temple or tomb nearby. 18. EGYPTIAN WOODEN PAINTED CANOPIC LID

An Egyptian male head from a lid of a canopic jar, finely carved from wood and presenting facial features in high relief, including almond-shaped eyes, a sharp browline, a naturalistic nose, gently smiling full lips, a rounded chin and nicely defined jawline, pronounced ears, and a recessed neck. The surface is adorned in painted gesso so as to create a russet-brown complexion, black details on the face, and a black royal tripartite wig. A naturalistic, carved anhydride head of a male, possibly a priest, displaying a round visage of minimalist features. Gazing out from recessed eyes with elongated outer edges, his face is comprised of a bulbous nose and pursed lips, all surmounted by a sizable bald dome. 20. VERY RARE EGYPTIAN STEATITE HEAD OF AMENHOTEP III

The idealised and youthful face is characterised by slender almond-shaped eyes with thick lids and cosmetic trails extending from each corner. 21. EGYPTIAN STONE STOPPER WITH YOUNG SUN GOD

A slender, rare stone stopper with a statuette of Harpocrates. The finely detailed portrait depicts the nude upper body of a young sun god with delineated musculature and the characteristic sidelock of youth draped over his shoulder from a bald head. The overall physiognomy comprises small eyes, a broad nose, and prominent lips. The statuette is atop a column capital adorned with lotus leaves. According to the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians, the sun god was born out of the Nun, the primaeval waters inside a blue lotus flower, which opened to reveal him on the first morning. 23. SUPERB EGYPTIAN GOLD AND BRONZE HORUS SHAPED TERMINAL

A cast bronze falcon head inlaid with gold, one of the most recognisable symbols of ancient Egypt. The head is characteristically avian, with its short beak, piercing eyes, and furrowed brows. 25. EGYPTIAN BRONZE HEADDRESS AND CROWN GROUP

Late Dynastic Period, Ca. 664 - 332 BC

A group of six bronze headdresses from figurative statuettes, including a double plume possibly indicating a statuette of Amun-Re, an atef crown for an Osiris statue, and three tripartite wigs possibly for statues of Hathor. Amun-Re, often appears with a solar disc at the base of his crown, is marked out by the motif as he who possesses both hidden and solar creative power.

The figure presents in characteristic ushabti fashion, standing in mummiform with fused legs and feet, crossing both arms atop the chest with a pair of black-painted picks in his hands, and with a seed bag draped from both shoulders down to the middle of his back. The protruding visage exhibits gently modelled features like almond-shaped eyes outlined heavily with black pigment, a flush nose, a slender mouth with indented corners, and tall ears, all framed within the striated lappets of his tripartite wig.

A superb core-formed glass amphoriskos, once used to hold perfumed oil. This vase has an inverted pyriform body that is finely contoured with vertical ribs and handles that gracefully join the shoulder to the cylindrical neck. This neck gradually flares to the rim, and the whole vessel is based upon a circular trailed and spherical foot. The decoration of this piece is breathtaking. The cobalt blue body is wound with shining white and tangerine yellow thread-like trails applied in a close-knit zigzag or feathered pattern. The tangerine trails continue above the feathered pattern and encircle the rim and the foot. A blue glass pointed unguentarium. The elongated pyriform body shrinks downward to close at a point at the bottom. Elongated unguentaria, with their pointed, solid toes, were completely unable to stand. In this case, they must have functioned not only to keep but to “carry” unguents as well. A lapis lazuli amulet in the shape of a recumbent bull, with incised striations beneath its body. The bull has a raised head and drilled eye sockets that perhaps once held inlaid ornamentation. Its deep blue colour symbolised the heavens and was associated with the divine.

A gilded camel seal. Such items were traditionally rewarded to the leader of ethnic minorities who swore loyalty to the ruling dynasty. The type of animal seal awarded was dependant on their rank. In this case of a camel seal, the highest rank who could receive it was the Chief Censor, who monitored the behaviour of government officials, ensuring they followed laws and regulations and investigating corruption or misconduct. An Egyptian statuette of Ptah Sokar Osiris, intricately carved from dense hardwood, possibly cedar, and embellished with gilt. The figure is depicted in the traditional mummiform pose with fused legs and protruding feet. It has prominent almond-shaped eyes, a pronounced nose, and full lips that form a slight smile. The cheeks are tapered, and lightly cupped ears complement the facial features. All of this is framed by the lappets of a headdress that rests low on the brow, adorned with a high crown and two feathers. Reviewed by Simone Musso, consultant curator for Egyptian antiquities at the Stibbert Museum, Florence, Italy, member of the Nuri Archaeological Expedition.

5. EGYPTIAN MUMMIFORM WOODEN STATUETTE OF PTAH SOKAR OSIRIS

An Egyptian painted ushabti faience figure presented with a dignified posture. The figure is in the classic mummiform pose with fused legs and protruding feet, and stands with arms held tightly against the sides and hands crossed atop the sternum. The pick and hoe typically seen in relief on other shabti figures were perhaps instead painted atop the wooden surface along with other vibrant embellishments. The face peers forward with almond-shaped eyes and bears a flush nose, full lips turned into a slight smile, and tapered cheeks, with recessed, lightly cupped ears framed within the lappets of a headdress that rests low along the brow. The figurine is adorned with a large hieroglyphic inscription (Chapter VI of The Book of the Dead) on the lower part of the body with red and black pigments. A mould-formed faience ushabti standing with fused legs atop an integral rectangular plinth and covered in a pale turquoise-hued glaze. The body gradually widens towards the chest, where the symbolic pick and hoe are held in crossed hands, and a small seed bag is draped over the left shoulder. Small eyes beneath slender brows, a wide nose with flared nostrils, full lips between puffy cheeks, and cupped ears form the sensitive countenance, and the head is topped with a simple tripartite wig. 20. EGYPTIAN FAIENCE PATAIKOS AMULET

An intriguing depiction of the god Pataikos, the bow-legged dwarf deity. The amulet is mould made from faience and covered in a lustrous blue-green glaze. He stands atop a square base, he has thick arms and a portly abdomen. On the back of the amulet is a small suspension loop. Pataikos is a protective deity in Ancient Egyptian mythology, Pataikos is often depicted as a dwarf with a large head and a prominent belly. He is frequently shown holding knives to ward off evil forces. Pataikos was commonly worn as an amulet by both the living and the dead for protection against harm and malevolent spirits. A Phoenician core-formed glass aryballos (perfume bottle) of squat form. The vessel bears has sloping shoulders, and a pair of curling trail loops, a flared rim, and a near spherical body. The opaque red body is embellished with rings of opaque yellow, and a pale blue zig-zag motif encircling the midsection, additional yellow and pale blue rings around the lower part of the body, and another yellow ring that constitutes the lip of the rim. A group of five Byzantine gold belt strap ends, likely from three different belts. The first belt fitting, on the left, has an incised and filigreed decorative scheme with a carved phytomorphic motif on the top. The second and third belt fittings are adorned with two busts of Emperor Theodosius the Great. The fourth belt fitting is rounded and features a carefully incised floral motif that retains traces of the inlay. The fifth belt fitting has a similar shape to the second and third, though it is smaller, and features the god Mars. The second, third, and fifth belt fittings are all likely from the same item, which possibly belonged to a high-ranking soldier or statesman from the reign of Theodosius.

400. SOUTH ARABIAN LIMESTONE HEAD OF A GOD

A carved from limestone, a high-relief stela featuring a prominent abstract face with a slender triangular nose, deep-set ovoid eyes beneath thin brows, a broad forehead, rounded cheekbones, a tapered mandible, and a petite, expressionless mouth. Russet-red pigment colours the face as well as the lateral plaque sides and the chalky white material within the eyes suggest they were once inlaid with attractive fragments of colourful stones. Shallow grooves on the verso indicate how the plaque would have been suspended, perhaps on a slanted surface.
