ack in 1985 when the Lord began to burden my heart for the birthing of a new congre-

gation in this area, three things from the Word of God were clearly revealed to me in

regard to worship:

Unhurried praise and adoration of our Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, Lord, and the Head of

this church. This includes a regular time for breaking of bread at the Lord’s Table.

Prayer and intercession as an expression of our utter dependence on our heavenly Father

through Jesus Christ in all things.

Bold proclamation that is relevant and instructive. Because we believe that the Bible is God’s

self-revelation and therefore contains all the answers to all of man’s problems and needs,

we preach it with all of its authority.

2015 fall MinisTrY Guide WHo We are he Church of The Apostles has never been just another church. God has guided and sustained this church through a vision that was made clear to the Rector even before the church began. We conclude from this that God has something unique in mind for this church body and we operate our ministry according to a God-given core ideology. So as you attend Apostles, what can you expect to experience in the life and ministry of this church?

T

our Vision Reaching the lost and equipping the saints for the work of ministry.

Core Values • We are here to lift up Jesus at all times in everything we do. The Bible says that Jesus came to the earth that He might have preeminence

in all things and that includes The Church of The Apostles. This ministry is not about us.

• We are constantly searching for opportunities and ways to make God’s awesome message of salvation clear to as many people as

possible. We want to ensure that people have the chance to hear the message and see the heart of Jesus in a true light that is compelling and clear.

• We also strive to present every person complete in Christ. The highest purpose of life on earth is to make joyful progress in our spiritual for-

mation, which is becoming like Jesus. Therefore, all of our ministry activity here at The Church of The Apostles converges on this focal point.

• Apostles is a church that is busy with Holy Spirit directed ministry activity that is executed with excellence. We firmly believe that excellence

is Heaven’s first law and if we cannot do ministry with excellence to the glory of God, we simply don’t do it.

• Finally, we speak the truth in love without compromise. Through the Bible, God reveals Himself as the fountain of truth and love. We declare His truth in love without compromise or apology.

sundaYs At Apostles, we have the “Gathering of the Communities” (Sunday School) from 9:00-10:15 on Sunday mornings. This is a time when our children, youth, and adult communities meet for grounding, learning, connecting, and training in the wisdom and ways of the Lord. These communities gather together around Jesus, the living Word of God, and the Scripture, the written Word of God. There is also an early worship service in the chapel during this hour.

At 10:30, we have the “Gathering of the Body” in our main sanctuary from 10:30-12:00 on Sunday mornings. This is a time for celebration and communion, praise and prayer, evangelism and proclamation. Our heart’s desire is to lift up the resurrected Jesus in all of His saving power and glory. The sacrament of Baptism is practiced on the second Sunday of the month and the sacrament of Communion is practiced on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of the month.

WednesdaY niGHTs On Wednesday evenings at 6:15 we offer programs for everyone in your family. The Hour of Power is our midweek service that includes a time of worship and an extended time of prayer. Come early at 5:00 for a family dinner (no reservations are needed) and then stay for the Hour of Power and for our great programs for children and students!

The Long Journey Home Stories of Hope from the Middle East

F

rom a young age, Aaminah* was used to the gunshots and the bombings. Growing up in Baghdad, her family and others like them had been targeted several times for their Christian faith. They had no choice but to flee. “I used to sit in the classroom next to the window and just cry remembering my friends and remembering Baghdad,” she said. “But despite being an immigrant and losing everything, I’m still confident that the Lord has a plan for me.” When the army retreated from their hometown of Mosul, Sajjad’s* family was defenseless against ISIS. With the August sun beating down on them, and with no food or water, they traveled 11 hours—it normally takes just one— to the next town. “We left our jobs, houses, cars, and everything we had for the sake of Jesus’ name,” Sajjad said. “We were not ready to forsake Jesus’ name for anything.” Muhammad’s* sister believed in Christ—but her Muslim father killed her because of her faith. When Muhammad came to Christ years later, he fled home for his own safety. “I had been praying and asking God to provide the money for me to pay for rent and food,” Muhammad said, “and I just believed God would provide everything.” For many Christians living in the Middle East and North Africa, this is the reality of following Christ. It is hope in the midst of chaos. It is forgiveness of enemies. For our persecuted brothers and sisters, it’s a long journey to the finish line—and some just need the support and encouragement to finish the race well. Their needs are simple: food, rent, medical supplies, jobs, mattresses, plane tickets—or the simple encouragement of a Christ-focused message in their own language. On a recent trip to the Middle East, our team listened to their stories, spent time with their families, and prayed with them. Some have been encouraged by Leading The Way’s satellite television channel, THE KINGDOM SAT, while others have received direct support through our Help The Persecuted ministry. For Aaminah, it’s both. In addition to receiving rent from Leading The Way to help make ends meet as a refugee, Aaminah finds continual strength and encouragement through our satellite channel. “I was affected by what Dr. Youssef said on THE KINGDOM SAT—not to let fear control us, that God will

Left: These blue bags full of food staples were passed out to a crowd of refugees from all over the Middle East at a local church. be with us,” she said. “This kind of preaching gave me courage.” After leaving everything behind in Mosul, Sajjad continues to receive funding for medical expenses that he can no longer afford. In the process, he has learned forgiveness. “We lost everything because of ISIS,” he said. “They persecuted us, killed us, and forced us to leave with only the clothes on our backs. But now I’m ready to forgive ISIS. And that’s all by the grace of the Lord, the Lord who came to me and helped me doing that.” For Muhammad, Leading The Way’s support came at just the right time. “At ministry school, I have to pay for rent, food, everything,” Muhammad says. “I had been praying for God to provide it. I have a friend who works with Leading The Way and she told me to send her my story. One day she texted me and said, ‘They accept it!’ I was so thankful to God. In that time I really needed it. Thank you so much for everything—for your prayers, for your support.” After a recent trip to the Middle East and North Africa, Dr. Michael Youssef shared this exhortation for the church here at home: “We really need to be praying for these people—their lives are on the line like nothing we’ve ever experienced in the West.” Through the global broadcasts of Leading The Way’s 24/7 satellite television channel, the personal follow-up and discipleship of on-the-ground teams, and the practical support of our Help The Persecuted ministry, God is using Leading The Way to encourage our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ. And in turn, we are learning from them as they continue to run the race of faith with great hope and endurance—a picture of a victorious church in the midst of chaos. *Names have been changed for their protection. The Church of The Apostles plays a vital role in this outreach effort. Kid’s Connection is our worship service offered to elementary children until parents determine their child is ready to sit in the main sanctuary with them for church. During our time together, we sing praises to God through our worship and seek to honor and know the Lord through our main lesson and small group interaction. This year’s theme is The Fruit of the Spirit. Children often think in terms of being good enough or not good enough to please Jesus. Our study of Galatians 5:22 will focus on fruit of the Spirit as something Jesus does in us. We will look at all nine fruits, describing what each one looks like in the daily life of a believer. Our prayer is that each child who attends Kid’s Connection will gain an understanding that developing fruit is to abide in Christ (John 15:5). We want children to know at a young age the difference between works of the flesh and fruit of the Spirit.

Apostles College Fellowship At Apostles College Fellowship, we believe that the deepest possible joy and true satisfaction in life can be found exclusively in knowing, loving, and trusting Jesus Christ in deeper and fuller ways. In a world thirsty, fried, and overloaded with meaning, how exciting and what a privilege it is to find there is nothing but higher and higher measures of contentment in walking with Him as the only Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). As such, we desire to be a place for college students to find ever-growing rest, encouragement, healing, and strength in, and through, and for, Jesus. As a part of this, we want to find creative ways to embrace the full counsel of all Scripture teaches, as well as to be a community that provides an opportunity for believers out of college to lead groups of students in college and form strong discipleship relationships. We are currently establishing Bible studies on campus at Kennesaw State University and Georgia Tech and will soon expand to Georgia State University and Emory University. We will keep you up to date with upcoming details on all-campus events as they develop!

Living and working in greater Atlanta as a young professional can be fun, but it can also be hectic and nerve-racking. It’s all too easy in today’s crazy-busy culture to feel disconnected and alone. Impact Atlanta exists to help postcollege young adults to purposely connect each week to explore the things in life that really matter. Within our 20s & 30s ministry, there are opportunities to gather with your peers to develop meaningful relationships and grow spiritually. Beginning on September 24, we will gather weekly every Thursday night throughout the year at The Church of The Apostles. This will be replacing our former “Impact” gatherings on Sunday evenings. From 7:00-8:30 p.m., we will have a relaxed time of fellowship, worship, a devotional, and other activities. Just follow the signs from the church’s main entrance to join us on the 6th floor. More information about our ministry can be found at apostles.org/20sand30s.

If you are unclear about what it means to have a personal relationship with God, uncertain how to go about it, or unconvinced that such a relationship even exists, Christianity Examined is for you. Testimony by Donna Burchfield was born and raised in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. I am single, have never been married, and don’t have any children. I have been a member of The Church of The Apostles for less than one year. I was born into a loving, Christian family. I am an only child and was raised by a single mother. I never knew my dad – he divorced my mom while she was pregnant with me. I did get to meet him when I was 16 and again when I was 19, but he told me he never wanted to see me again. My mom and I were very close, and we always attended church together. I have very fond memories of growing up in the Christian church. My earliest memories of God are very positive. I was taught God was our Father, but, since I did not have an earthly father, I really didn’t understand what that meant. I remember being taught Bible stories, coming to understand that all people sin and that God sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross to pay for our sins. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t know John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” But during my teenage years, I acted out. I rebelled, I drank, and I smoked. I was disobedient to and very disrespectful to my mother. I did awful things that are only known to God and me. Sure, I asked for forgiveness, and I know in my heart that God forgave me, but I still struggle today with forgiving myself for some of that time in my life. Even during this time, my mother had me in church, but I was a hypocrite. I warmed the pew on Sunday and did my best not to let that interfere with my life the rest of the week. My rebellion put a strain on my relationship with my mother throughout my teenage years and early adulthood. But during college, I began working on my relationship with my mother. On May 14, 1999, my life changed forever. I woke up to find my mother dead of a massive heart attack. She was only 60 years old. My life stopped. Part of me died with her that day. While I believed in God before, I had never felt the need for Him more than I did then. And yet, I had never been angry with God before, but now I was furious. I only had one person in my life, and He took her. Over the next weeks, months, even years, I spiraled

I

10

into a major depression, despondency, and despair. I attempted suicide in 2000 and was hospitalized. I attempted suicide again a few years later and only shared that experience with one Christian friend who happened to be a member of The Church of The Apostles. She started inviting me to church, but I politely turned her down. I don’t know if it was a reminder of the loss of my mother or something else, but attending church was just too painful. I finally accepted her invitation to attend a new program at her church called “Christianity Examined” in 2012. I think a seed was planted at that time, but it didn’t change anything else. I still would not accept her invitation to attend the church on Sundays, but looking back I can see that God was working on my heart. During 2014, I really felt the need to repair my relationship with God, and I found myself at Apostles. Dr. James Saxon invited me to join his Progressive Bible Concepts Class, an extension of Christianity Examined. The first session I attended was on love. Of all the topics, why love? I can’t relate to love. But I learned that the opposite of love was fear. Fear was an emotion I was intimately familiar with and dealt with daily. My depression, despair, anxiety, etc. were all rooted in fear. My fear was interfering with my relationship with God. I started praying for God to release me from my fear, and, for the first time since my mom’s death, I had a moment where I felt joy. It was a fleeting moment, but it had happened. I began praying more and reading my Bible every day. I also prayed for Jesus to come back into my life, and, this time, I let Him take the driver’s seat. Since that time, I have had many trials, but my reaction to those trials has changed. I have learned that I can be sure of my salvation through Ephesians 2:8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.” Peace and joy began to return to my life. My life verse has been Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” If you feel lost and hopeless, please know that God is there, and He loves you. He wants to help you, too! All you have to do is invite Him into your life. Let go of your troubles, and let God take control! Come find a place where you can connect with God and others in deeper ways.

Our Small Groups are a great environment to develop authentic, caring relationships while discussing how God’s truth intersects life. They help us in our journey of becoming more like Christ… together. Small Groups usually meet in homes every week or every other week, featuring lively, interactive discussions on God’s Word and how we live it out. Small Group members share life with all of its joys and challenges. You’ll pray for one another and receive encouragement. Together, your Small Group will help you live out your faith while impacting others.

Women’s Ministry

Equipping women to know, love, and serve the Lord

The heart of Women’s Ministry at Apostles is for women to understand God’s high calling, to continually grow in His grace, and to be equipped to reach others for Christ through knowing and obeying God’s Word.

bible sTudies In our pursuit of God, we want to be intentional in studying God’s Word. So this fall there are a number of group studies from which to choose. Online registration is available until one week prior to the commencement of each class and insures that your study materials will be available for you by the first day of class. Registration by phone is possible after online registration closes.

TuesdaY bible sTudies Philippians: Christ, The source of Joy and strength

September 15 – November 3 (8 weeks) 6:45 – 7:30 a.m. Philippians is a book that is written to inspire the growth of Christ in our very soul. It is not filled with historical events as many of Paul’s letters, but it seeks to grow our relationship with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Paul writes this letter to the Philippians imploring them to stand firm in the face of persecution and rejoice regardless of circumstances. It is outstanding as the letter of joy and contains one of the most profound Christological passages in the New Testament. In this study, we welcome all women who are seeking an intimate Bible Study, whether a professional woman or otherwise. We strive in this study to reach the needs of each woman who joins our group and seeks to grow in her faith and relationship with Jesus Christ.

acts Part 1 Precept upon Precept (Chapters 1-12)

September 15 – November 10 (9 weeks) 9:30 – 11:45 a.m.

Luke’s first account was his Gospel in which he recorded all that Jesus began to do and teach. His second account we call Acts, or the Acts of the Apostles, in which Luke recorded what happened after Jesus’ ascension to the Father. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, empowering the apostles to testify to the power of God in salvation and in living every day for the gospel. Learn how God spread the gospel through witnesses of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and from their examples, how you too can witness to others. Stand in awe of the power of God in believers to endure persecution and suffering for the cause of Christ and embrace His power in your life. Be encouraged by the results of faithful servants holding forth truth in a dark world; watch as the church grows numerically, geographically, and culturally. Leader: Anne Hayes Room 201-202 • Cost: $25 Limited childcare available at $50 per family for Apostles members. Children MUST be preregistered for childcare by August 26. NO WALK-INS.

Today the world is in a state of heightened conflict, both at home and abroad. Christians are being martyred in historic numbers internationally and marginalized and isolated in America. How do we as Christians reconcile this reality with the hope of the Gospel of Christ, the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, and the promise that our God reigns both now and in the future kingdom? Where is Jesus when suffering rains down on Christian heads, when evil seems to sit on the throne? Come with us this fall to sit at Peter’s feet and to hear this chief of Jesus’s apostles address the issues of suffering and evil, a mere 30 years after Jesus conquered death.

True Woman 101: divine design a study on biblical Womanhood

September 8 – November 3 (9 weeks)

Wednesdays, 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. *Resumes in January January 27 – April 6 (11 weeks)

What does it mean to be a woman? The current cultural ideal for womanhood encourages women to be strident, sexual, self-centered, independent, and, above all, powerful and in control. But sadly, this model of womanhood hasn’t delivered the happiness and fulfillment it promised. The Bible teaches that it’s not up to us to decide what womanhood is all about. God created male and female for a very specific purpose. His design isn’t arbitrary or unimportant. It is very intentional, and He wants women to discover, embrace, and delight in the beauty of His design. He’s looking for True Women!

Because life is not a destination but a preparation for eternity, Mom to Mom this year will include an emphasis on family devotional resources and a continuing study of peacemaking principles. However, our primary study for 2015-2016 will focus on parenting as taught by Paul David Tripp, and particularly his book, Age of Opportunity. This is an excellent opportunity for parents of young children and preteens to prepare for the teen years. In addition, Paul Tripp is an author we need to know! His insight into our relationship with the Lord and with one another is being used in myriads of ways at this time in history with all ages. How great it is that we can begin to form the mindset together that each day is a day of opportunity!

Bible teachers Mary A. Kassian and Nancy Leigh DeMoss share the key fundamentals of biblical womanhood in this eight-week study. Each week includes five daily individual lessons leading to a group time of sharing and digging deeper into God’s Word. And to enhance this time of learning together, online videos are available featuring Mary and Nancy as they encourage women to discover and embrace God’s design and mission for their lives.

Age of Opportunity is a breath of fresh air. It is a study that uncovers the heart issues affecting parents and their children—particularly teenagers. Combining elements of hope, solid Biblical advice and extremely practical guidance, Paul David Tripp challenges readers to see the teen years as a period of opportunity rather than one of survival. Principles in this study aim to allow us to gain assurance of God’s provision for parenting success and discover ways to seize the

Comfort & Hope

Forget the “Girl Power” and experience “God’s Power” while working through loving, Christ-centered women

By Michelle Alvey

E

cclesiastes 4:12 says, “Though one be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” We were not designed to face trials on our own, and it is important to share our joys with others who join with us in praising God. Single Hearts for Christ is a group consisting of Christ-centered, single women (age 40 and above), which provides a secure place to grow in Christ with Bible study, prayer, encouragement, comfort, support, and friendship. My first exposure to Single Hearts was through Casey Hawley, who contacted me and prayed for my daughter and me when we needed it most. My divorce was finalized in October 2013, and I have a 9-year old daughter who is a precious blessing in my life! I went to the Christmas Tea in 2013 and completed a prayer request card seeking prayer during a very difficult time. Casey contacted me to let me know she had received my request and was praying for us. She had been through a similar experience, and she gave me a great sense of comfort and hope. 2 Corinthians 1:4 tells us that “God comforts us in all of our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” Casey lived out that verse in my life, and she is an excellent example of the kind of woman you find in Single Hearts. Shortly after, I was invited to the Single Hearts New Year’s Eve Dinner. It was one of my first weekends without my daughter, and I did not want to go out and “put on a brave face.” However, my mom encouraged (or forced) me to go. Everyone made me feel as if I had been part of the group since the beginning. They even insisted I join in the group photo! We laughed, cried, and enjoyed a sincere expression of love and concern for one another. Through Single Hearts, I realized that I am not alone and that there is no shame in needing others. That is how God made us. As an attorney

14

and a very strong-willed woman, I previously felt self-sufficient and in “control” – capable of solving any problem. Through many trials over the years, I finally realized (to my surprise) that I am not self-sufficient or in control. Rather, I am completely dependent on God, and He is in control. Today, I am endeavoring to surrender to God in all things and to trust in His sovereignty and His timing. Of course, like all of us, I am a work in progress. It’s only through God’s transforming power and the support of family and friends that I can be all who God has planned for me to be. Single Hearts is not just about receiving support and friendship; it’s also about experiencing opportunities to serve others. Several times a year, we host dinner and devotion for the “Techwood Girls” ministry, which is headed by fellow Single Heart, Karen Moncrief. I strongly encourage all single women to join me in becoming involved in Single Hearts for Christ. Even though The Church of The Apostles is large, Single Hearts offers the opportunity to be part of an intimate group of Christ-centered women, to be given the opportunity to serve others, and to experience the very characteristics of friendship we studied in a helpful sermon here at Apostles: loyalty, honesty, and sincerity.

single Hearts for Christ

Jan Blakeslee, Lay Leader Single Hearts for Christ is a women’s fellowship that brings single Christian women together to enjoy, enrich and support one another. What better place to be than with a group where people know you, pray for you and encourage you in your faith. As we see it, every single, divorced, and widowed woman has different needs, worries, hopes and dreams. But it is certain that each one offers a plethora of experiences, perspectives, challenges and gifts. In Christ, we have all that we need for life and ministry. If you are 40 years old or beyond, and looking to connect with other Christian women, we have an open invitation for you. Our goal is to provide a secure place for you to grow in Christ and to establish friendships with other single women at The Church Of The Apostles. Join us! September 17, 2015 – April 28, 2016 (28 weeks)

Fall meeting dates: September 17 – December 10 (No meeting November 26) 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Genesis: it’s been called the most important book ever written. You may think that’s a bit over-stated, but Genesis is undeniably foundational, inestimably significant. The first book in the Bible, Genesis means “origin”; in Genesis, we have God’s mind on the origin of creation, the universe, our world, humanity, life, marriage, evil, language, government, culture, nations, religion, God’s chosen people—to name a few. Whether you’re a Bible novice or a seasoned aficionado, you may enjoy this opportunity to interface daily with God’s Word through simple homework questions. There will be corporate sharing, as well as clarifying teaching. Join us for this 28-week study of the book of the Bible that is critical to knowing God more fully, handling His Word with growing expertise, and gaining a richer understanding of many important matters in life.

Leader: Denise Nyberg Room 231 Cost: $32 (total fee for the 28 week study) Limited childcare available for $50 per family for Apostles members. Children MUST be pre-registered for childcare by August 26. NO WALK-INS.

Do you wonder what the Bible really says about marriage? Do you feel like God is calling you to make your marriage a priority? Do you want to know how you can please and serve God through this relationship?

There is nothing like pasturing in God’s living, breathing, lifegiving Word. Please join us for this verse-by-verse journey through the book of Ruth. This book is a true story of hard times with a happy ending. It’s a story of redemption, but more than that, it tells of the ancestry of Christ, the Redeemer of the world. It’s a story that provides a picture of Jesus as our Bridegroom who came to save us. He is the One who brings us out of darkness to place us into His family. He not only provides a happy ending but is coming again to gather us into a glorious and eternal forevermore. God used John the Baptist to prepare the way for Christ’s first appearing. As He prepares the bride of Christ – the true church – for the wedding supper of the Lamb, He is using us to prepare the way for Christ’s next appearing. These are exciting times! Oh, Lord Jesus, come!

This marriage-focused Bible study is designed to align our hearts and wills with God’s Word through prayer, study, and authentic community. Each week we will learn biblical concepts through teaching and discussion, with topics including God’s design and roles for wives, communication, intimacy, and forgiveness. There will be weekly homework that includes keeping a “thankful” list, studying God’s Word, praying for your husband, and answering application questions that are heart-probing and action-oriented. Join us as we look into God’s beautiful plan for marriage and expect that He will do great things in our hearts and homes! Men’s fraTerniTY Men’s Fraternity is a program designed to equip men to live and to lead as God intended, training men to press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. The church, the nation, and the world are suffering mightily from a lack of godly, masculine leadership. As traditional masculine virtues are assaulted and undermined in our modern culture, too many men either capitulate or seek satisfaction from counterfeits that are often selfish, juvenile, and destructive. We men are called to something higher, nobler, and truer. We know this, and we crave this, but too often flounder because we lack training and the fellowship of like-minded brothers. Men are in a battle against a ruthless and relentless enemy – personal, cultural, and societal forces that seek to alienate and confuse men at every age and in every walk of life. AUTHENTIC MEN understand the genesis of their manhood and are grounded in timeless principles and bedrock values. They are resolute and decisive, qualities that modern Western culture discourages, not because they have no value, but because such men are a threat to the prevailing norms and standards. AUTHENTIC MEN understand the need to learn, continually evaluate themselves, and train in the company of like-minded men. We invite all men of Apostles and our larger community to answer this call by joining us in the STS Gym on Friday mornings at 5:55 a.m. We meet for coffee and a light breakfast, followed by a presentation and small group discussion. We will endeavor to conclude no later than 7:40 a.m., but you are welcome to leave earlier if you need to. For more information, contact Brenda Williams at bwilliam@apostles.org or 404-591-1965.

follow Him and lead others? How do we balance the demands at work with the responsibilities at home? How do we love our wives like Christ loved the Church? God did not intend for you to discover the answer to these and all the other important life questions by yourself. You were created to live in community with other men who are wrestling with the same issues, and who desire to live godly lives that count for God, but have not yet “put it all together.” Come join other men who meet here at the church on a weekday morning to study Scripture and apply it to real life. Share your life with other men who will help you see God’s truth more clearly and who will help you sharpen your focus on Christ.

THe PaTH: Men’s MenTorinG The Path is a lay ministry at The Church of The Apostles that seeks to facilitate mentoring partnerships between men who desire to have accountability for their lives. The Bible is our primary source of guidance. We strive hard not to create our own “program” but instead to let the Holy Spirit guide in this effort. As a reference for our mentors, we use a book called The Heart of Mentoring by David A. Stoddard. Dave has worked closely with our core team, helping us fully grasp the Ten Powerful Principles of Effective Mentoring laid out in his book. The overriding theme is that mentoring is a process facilitated by a relationship. Each partnership is unique and tailored to the needs of the younger partner. Mentors are willing to open their lives, letting the partner see how the mentor succeeded or failed, and above all, learned from his experiences. Mentors are good listeners. They don’t have an agenda or want to change their mentoring partners. They want to help their mentoring partners navigate the narrow path of a Christian life. The Journey: The book of James

Steve Peterson, Jordan Broggi and T.J. Diamond Room 621-622

It has been said that Jesus could turn people’s ears into eyes as He taught about the Kingdom of God through parables. As we study the parables, we will see what Jesus taught about:

We’re on a journey… a journey toward Christ-likeness, a journey that takes us through the gap. This gap is the differential between where we want to be in our walk with God and where we really are. True life-change happens on this journey. This Sunday morning community will combine solid biblical teaching with authentic table discussions about how we live out God’s truth. We’ll explore the book of James, with time for honest, application-oriented conversation about the challenges and joys of the journey.

Entering God’s Kingdom Growing in God’s Teaching Living in God’s Kingdom Finishing in God’s Kingdom The parables will teach us how to live the Kingdom life while here on earth.

The armor of God: ephesians 6 & 1 John Jimmy Goolsby Room 617

Young families: a larger story Anthony Burnett Room 613

We conclude our study of Ephesians with the Armor of God. If we walk worthy of our calling in Christ as Paul taught in the previous chapters, we should expect Satan’s attack. The Armor of God is the biblical principle for victory for the inevitable spiritual battle.

Many Christians are very unclear about their calling and their place in the unfolding story God is telling. We’ll begin our journey in the book of Acts and watch as the church takes form. As we walk forward into other New Testament writings, we’ll also look at the life of Jesus and how He navigates His journey. Our desire is to help you find your place in the story and learn to enjoy God more.

We will transition to a study of 1 John. Why study this small epistle? John gives us 4 purposes for his penning of this powerful letter: 1. Promote complete joy in Christ (1:4) 2. Prevent Christians from committing sin (2:1) 3. Protect from false teachers & doctrine (2:26) 4. Provide assurance of salvation in Christ (5:13)

Breakfast for the whole family will be served in Room 607-610 at 8:45 a.m., and teaching will start at 9:10 a.m. in Room 613.

Young families: family foundations John Whitney Room 612

The book of romans Baker Smith Room 248

Family Foundations is comprised largely of married couples, mostly in their mid-30s to 50s, with children from preschool to high school. The group strives to build a faith-based foundation for the development and strengthening of our individual families and church family bonds through the study of God’s Word in a sharing and participatory environment.

Have you ever struggled to understand your faith or to clearly express it to unbelievers? In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he sets out God’s plan for the Gospel and the righteousness that comes from God, which can be received only by faith in Jesus Christ. His simple, question-and-answer format clears up confusion for many ordinary Christians who struggle to work their way to heaven but find they are unable to please God. Similarly, Romans had a tremendous impact on the ministries of Christian leaders such as Augustine, Martin Luther, George Whitfield, John Wesley, and Karl Barth. As a result, they discovered Romans was God’s key to the rest of Scripture, His plan for the church, and its impact on world history. Join us in this study, and expect to be encouraged and strengthened in your faith.

Young families fellowship Jim and Melissa Harper Room 607-610

The Young Families class is focused on Paul’s epistles, particularly Philippians and Colossians. Jim Harper, who currently leads Men’s Fraternity and his wife, Melissa, will be the presenters. Breakfast for the whole family is served at 8:45 a.m., and the teaching starts at 9:10 a.m.

What the bible really says

We will look at Old and New Testament references to The Day of the Lord, and other related passages, that provide some glimpses into the second coming of Jesus and the events surrounding that day.

“Spirituality” – as the term pops up in conversations with friends or neighbors, what is our response? What is our belief about “spirituality?” It seems every person has his or her own interpretation and meaning of the word. How does this term “spirituality” relate to our Christian faith? As believers in Christ, we must be grounded in the truths and concepts of God’s Word in order to be able to assist our friends in coming to the realization that true “spirituality” is found in Jesus Christ, who truly is the only Way, the only Truth, and the only Life. This class will clearly present the crucial beliefs and doctrines of our Christian faith, as well as how we are to apply these truths to our everyday living as we seek to honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The lack of a godly worldview has caused the church, our nation, and the world to suffer extensively. Yet the Bible says, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.” The goal of this course is to re-discover and re-infuse God’s worldview into our personal lives. Join us as we examine the Scriptures, as well as sessions from the Truth Project and elements of our National Archives, to re-establish the foundations for the worldview and life system that God intends to govern every area of our existence. Our purpose is to help equip each of us to more effectively address current worldview issues in a very practical way that starts with our personal morality and works its way out to cultural issues and into the more farreaching implications of the government of our country.

Bobby Mitchell, Sr. Room 239

This is a continuing study of how to know and do God’s will, using Paul and his journeys as a model for us today. This year, we will use some of the kings of the Old Testament to expand the study, while continuing to search out some of life’s foundational questions related to walking with God, such as: Does God call us today? Are we listening? How do we recognize God’s voice and respond in obedience? Can I really walk with God in the turmoil of America today? How can I make a difference? This study addresses these questions and many others and is all about practical applications in today’s world.

love & respect (Marriage building) David and Brenda Martin Room 242

When the reality of marriage sinks in to the routines and habits of a bride and groom, they become acutely aware that life together will be quite an adjustment from life apart. Issues such as communication, work schedules, social calendars, and household responsibilities rise to the surface. In the middle of treating those symptoms, though, is the heart of the question that fuels a successful marriage: How am I showing love/respect to my spouse? What does the Bible teach about husbands and wives? How do a husband and wife feed the health of their marriage? We are going to be talking about how husbands and wives perceive love differently and discover what the indispensable aspect of love is for each of them as we walk through the study, Love & Respect.

Celebrating 10 Years of Living Waters 10 years of the most powerful stories of transformed lives and families

I

n John 4, one woman at the well received living water from Jesus, and she then went and told everyone she knew about Him. In Living Waters, we see whole families transformed to the image of Christ from one member being healed and set free. Sometimes we see multiple family members go through Living Waters because of the change they see in one member. And, because the hearts of the fathers and children are turned to each other, we know that God will bless these families down through the generations (Ex. 20:6).

God showed me that I used relationships with multiple women to replace the pain and emptiness of not having a mother. I am learning to be honest and to be a man of integrity. This generational sin in our family will stop with me! Jesus can be the center of all of my relationships, and He answers prayers and is helping me to become a spiritual leader for my family.” - Male

‘‘

I came riddled with shame and self judgment about past and present sin. God used Living Waters to take my eyes off of myself and redirected my gaze back to the cross. I have learned to view women in healthy ways. I need to stay connected with other men.” - Male

‘‘

Through Living Waters, God has broken the chains of what seemed to be a never-ending addiction to pornography and depression by showing me the deepest effects of the cross of Jesus in my life. The Lord has taken hold of me and I can hear Him say, ‘I love you!’” - Female

‘‘

The Lord led me to go through Living Waters so I could see and get healed of a number of wounds I had been carrying for many years that I was not very aware of. It also changed how I viewed God, and I came to see much more fully how He provided for me in every need. This was very eye-opening and reassuring.” - Female

‘‘

God has freed me up from same sex attraction and addiction to pornography. He revealed and healed years of wounds and pain I had been covering up and numbing. I yielded my narcissistic image to Jesus, and He enabled me to ‘be well’ and not just ‘look well.’” - Male If there is an issue that affects your most significant relationships, your intimacy with God and your sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, then Living Waters is for you!
