ack in 1985 when the Lord began to burden my heart for the birthing of a new congre-
gation in this area, three things from the Word of God were clearly revealed to me in
regard to worship:
Unhurried praise and adoration of our Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, Lord, and the Head of
this church. This includes a regular time for breaking of bread at the Lord’s Table.
Prayer and intercession as an expression of our utter dependence on our heavenly Father
through Jesus Christ in all things.
Bold proclamation that is relevant and instructive. Because we believe that the Bible is God’s
self-revelation and therefore contains all the answers to all of man’s problems and needs,
we preach it with all of its authority.

2015 suMMer MinisTrY Guide Who We are he Church of The Apostles has never been just another church. God has guided and sustained this church through a vision that was made clear to the Rector even before the church began. We conclude from this that God has something unique in mind for this church body and we operate our ministry according to a God-given core ideology. So as you attend Apostles, what can you expect to experience in the life and ministry of this church?
T
our Vision Reaching the lost and equipping the saints for the work of ministry.
Core Values • We are here to lift up Jesus at all times in everything we do. The Bible says that Jesus came to the earth that He might have preeminence
in all things and that includes The Church of The Apostles. This ministry is not about us.
• We are constantly searching for opportunities and ways to make God’s awesome message of salvation clear to as many people as
possible. We want to ensure that people have the chance to hear the message and see the heart of Jesus in a true light that is compelling and clear.
• We also strive to present every person complete in Christ. The highest purpose of life on earth is to make joyful progress in our spiritual for-
mation, which is becoming like Jesus. Therefore, all of our ministry activity here at The Church of The Apostles converges on this focal point.
• Apostles is a church that is busy with Holy Spirit directed ministry activity that is executed with excellence. We firmly believe that excellence
is Heaven’s first law and if we cannot do ministry with excellence to the glory of God, we simply don’t do it.
• Finally, we speak the truth in love without compromise. Through the Bible, God reveals Himself as the fountain of truth and love. We declare His truth in love without compromise or apology.
sundaYs At Apostles, we have the “Gathering of the Communities” (Sunday School) from 9:00-10:15 on Sunday mornings. This is a time when our children, youth, and adult communities meet for grounding, learning, connecting, and training in the wisdom and ways of the Lord. These communities gather together around Jesus, the living Word of God, and the Scripture, the written Word of God. There is also an early worship service in the chapel during this hour.
At 10:30, we have the “Gathering of the Body” in our main sanctuary from 10:30-12:00 on Sunday mornings. This is a time for celebration and communion, praise and prayer, evangelism and proclamation. Our heart’s desire is to lift up the resurrected Jesus in all of His saving power and glory. The sacrament of Baptism is practiced on the second Sunday of the month and the sacrament of Communion is practiced on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of the month.
WednesdaY niGhTs On Wednesday evenings at 6:15 we offer programs for everyone in your family. The Hour of WEDNESDAY NIGHTS AT 6:15 P.M. Power is our midweek service that includes a time of worship and an extended time of prayer. Come early at 5:00 for a family dinner (no reservations are needed) and then stay for the Hour of Power and for our great programs for children and students!

ow could he know? she wondered to herself. Jesus had named her sin—and so very specifically. The Samaritan woman had been married to five different men, and now she was living with yet another man. And Jesus—a Jewish stranger from Galilee whom she had met just minutes before— seemed to know every detail. The woman was uncomfortable— and not just because she was out by the well, far from shade, with the midday sun beating down on her. The Samaritan woman didn’t want to talk about her sin, so she changed the subject. “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet,” she said. “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship” (John 4:19-20 ESV). It was a theological debate, a political and religious issue, all wrapped into one. And it was just the thing to take Jesus off the topic of her sin. Or so she thought. Jesus’ answer to the woman’s question cut through all that and got to the root issue. “Believe me,” He said. “The hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father . . . But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him” (John 4:21, 23). Worship is not about our preferences or traditions; it’s about what pleases our heavenly Father. And here Jesus tells us plainly: The Father wants us to worship in spirit and truth.
H
a holy Conjunction “Oil, wind, water, the Jordan River—these are things compared to the Spirit in the Bible,” says Apostles’ Worship Leader Aaron Keyes. “It’s hard to nail a river down to the floor. But truth—truth is objective. It’s solid. It’s the foundation, it’s the rock—it’s unaltering. Truth is not a river; it’s a rock. “Usually what happens is we end up worshiping in one way or the other. Personalities lean one way or another; denomina-

tions lean one way or another; maybe generations lean one way or another. But Jesus talks about true worshipers worshiping the Father in spirit and in truth, and I think that and is a holy conjunction. We’ve got to fight for both.” For Aaron, worship is not the warm up before the sermon. It’s not the entertainment that comes before the serious business of church. And it’s not a concert to entice crowds. Worship is an integral, non-negotiable part of what it means to be the body of Christ. And it’s not just for Sunday mornings. “Worship is just loving God,” he says. “We can mystify it if we want to, but basically worship is loving God, so anything you can do and love God while you do it, that is worship. You can sweep the floor, you can sing a song, you can play with your kids on the swing set, and if you can just recognize the goodness of God, your gratitude to God, love God in it, you’re worshiping Him . . . But the goal of all of this stuff isn’t even just that we would love God better; it’s that we would make more disciples.”
When it comes to worship, or the life of a church as a whole, it all begins with Jesus. “You’ve got the word of Jesus, you have the works of Jesus, and usually we emphasize those two things,” says Aaron. “But we miss the way of Jesus. How did He actually live? He lived in community. He lived with close relationships. He lived in absolute union with the Father at all times. How did this work in His . . . life? That’s why He invited [His disciples]—they got to see it for three years. We’re lucky if people get to see us for 30 minutes.” Too often, we think of church as the place where we go merely to hear a sermon and to learn more about Jesus, but for Aaron, the church is so much more than that. “It’s not just about the words of Jesus or even celebrating the works of Jesus,” he says. “It’s a community of people trying to live the way of Jesus, and part of that involves being radically hospitable, to love people—to let people into our lives to see how it actually looks, and they let us into theirs so we can get challenged where we need to and affirmation where we need it. “And so we’re just starting this with the music team, just trying to take some steps into this, but what we hope to see is not just great songs, great moments, even great records; we want to see great disciples and great leaders. “I just think there could be church leaders coming up through Apostles in the next five years. There could be worship leaders, preachers, church planters, missionaries, and we might get those people for just a [short] season while they’re here. If we can open up our lives to them, we would be really remiss to just be entertaining them with great songs, great preaching, and never actually diving into their lives and letting them [into] ours.”
open and honest disciples That’s what Jesus was doing with that woman at the well. His goal was not to instruct her in a proper theology of worship, and it wasn’t simply to get a drink of water. Jesus was intent on drawing this woman—and everyone she knew—into a relationship. He was making disciples. But relationships can only be forged when there is honesty. We must be open with God and with one another about our real lives—our shortcomings, our failures, and our fears. By revealing the Samaritan woman’s shameful past, Jesus was freeing her from a life of hiding in the shadows. And yet, how often do we come to church on a Sunday morning with our secrets hidden behind a smile? “It’s really hard having people in your actual life, right?” says Aaron, as he begins to describe one of his goals for the worship ministry at Apostles. “So we’re really good with the spiritual life thing, but Jesus is interested in our real life. And it’s funny, we could come in here every Sunday and tell everyone how happy we are to have them in the house. ‘It’s so good to have you guys in the house,’ we say, and then never actually have anyone into our house. This is a huge breakdown for me. And so I hope that all the stuff that we see musically and culturally and even Scripturally happening here on Sunday is driving our whole congregation towards a lifestyle of radical generosity, of loving people [with] radical hospitality, inviting people into our homes. “The world doesn’t need perfect examples,” notes Aaron, “just living examples. We can’t be perfect examples; we’re going to screw it up. But God is so gracious that He will actually use our screwing it up, then seeing that, seeing our repenting, our dealing with it, getting help, getting counseling, whatever—He’ll use even our screwing up to build other people up, you know? We screw up and they get built up. It’s the beauty of discipleship. It’s amazing.”
one body, one lord Though there’s always room for members of The Church of The Apostles to grow in their love for one another, Aaron believes the church is on the right track—and it has him excited to see what God will do in the coming years. “One thing that to me is really unique about Apostles and beautiful about this time right now [at] Apostles is that we’re coming up on the 28th anniversary of the church,” he says. “The look of the place, the demographic of the place; it’s all very different than a lot of what else you see around Atlanta. There are not a lot of places that look like this. There are not a lot of churches that have [a] vibrant influx of young people but also a big congregation of people who aren’t so young. “You’ve got all different colors, dialects, [backgrounds] in the congregation, and that is a rare thing,” Aaron notes. “Psalm 133 talks about how beautiful it is when brothers dwell together in unity; it’s like precious oil poured out on the beard of the priest. And there is this whole anointing of God, the Holy Spirit does something unique in us when we gather together in unity . . . I think God’s given [worship] to us for a lot of reasons, but one thing that it does is that it actually brings us together. It brings us all into one attention, one affection, one devotion to the Lord.”

“You shouldn’t be here,” Ben told himself. Parked outside the bar in Edmonton, sitting alone in his car, the 31-year-old law student had been wrestling with himself. Prior to committing his life to Christ a year ago, an alcohol addiction ruled his life. For years now, he had been sober—but as he considered whether or not to join his classmates at the party, he sensed danger. All the while, Dr. Youssef’s message of Lot’s moral compromise rang out from the speakers of his car radio: “In Sodom, the tragedy wasn’t just the unbelievers becoming perverted and immoral—the believers got caught in that lifestyle too. The believers found it difficult to resist the persuasive and permissive culture of their day.” As Ben heard these words, he knew what he had to do. “The longer I listened, the more I was able to recognize my self-deception,” Ben said. It was clear that nothing good could come from his attendance at the event—so he fastened his seatbelt and drove away. “I’m now convinced that Jesus is the Savior, and I am ready to die for my faith,” Samar* shared with Ash, a member of the Leading The Way follow-up team. Ash was moved to tears as he heard such bold words coming from a young Saudi Arabian woman who, for 18 years, had lived a life defined by Islam. After eight months of corresponding with Ash, Samar had made the decision to follow Christ—a decision that could cost her life. It was Samar’s questions about the Islamic treatment of women and the violent acts of ISIS that had first driven her to the cross. The more she studied the Qur’an, the more depressed she became—so she turned to Christian television for the answers. Samar discovered Leading The Way’s satellite channel, THE KINGDOM SAT, and called the number on the screen. For eight months, she brought her questions to Ash—questions about jihad, the Trinity, and the treatment of women in the Bible. Now, she had finally made up her mind. She was ready to give her life to Christ. Sitting in the parking lot of a bar in Canada, a 31-year-old law student heard the message of Truth and received the courage he needed to walk

away from a tempting situation. Seven thousand miles away, on the other side of the world, an 18-year-old high school graduate from Saudi Arabia heard the Good News of Jesus and decided that she was ready to risk her life to follow Him. At just the right moment, both were empowered to make a difficult decision for Christ as God used the teachings of Leading The Way to open their eyes to the Truth. Stories like Ben’s and Samar’s affirm the Godgiven mission of Leading The Way and the critical need for the ministry’s 24/7 efforts here at home and around the world. Whether in the Muslim world or the Western world, our response to the needs, issues, and challenges of our day remains the same. “As I reflect on the state of the world today, I see two great spiritual challenges set before us,” Dr. Michael Youssef said in a recent ministry letter. “I see today’s church swayed by ideas that stand in direct opposition to God’s Word, and I see the spreading influence of Islamic ideology as never before. But the solution to both is the same: we must share God’s Truth lovingly and fearlessly, day and night, until Jesus comes back.” This year, we saw an exponential rise in the persecution of Christians. We saw churches
abandon the Truth of Scripture for watered-down, self-centered gospels. But in the midst of the madness, God’s Truth is going forth and transforming hearts and minds in Christ. This year, Leading The Way saw an incredible response to the release of Dr. Youssef’s new book, Jesus, Jihad and Peace, and a fruitful year of outreach here at home and around the world. Through the distribution of tens of thousands of Navigator solar-powered devices; continued 24/7 Gospel broadcasting on television, radio, and the Internet; personal onthe-ground discipleship; and the creation of new programs and resources, the Good News of Jesus Christ is reaching some of the hard-to-reach places of the world—in His perfect timing. As Ben reflects on what helped him walk in victory that night, he says it was the timeliness of the message he heard on the radio. “That message was pointed exactly where I needed it to be,” he says. “It couldn’t have been any more perfect.” For Samar, it was the clear presentation of God’s Word. Ash, who continues to correspond with her, says, “Her faith and relationship with the Lord are growing. She reads the Bible daily and deeply studies it, searching websites and calling the follow-up team for answers. She has even started to share Christ with her friends.” Through the global ministry of Leading The Way, God is orchestrating victorious moments and divine appointments all over the world. Ben and Samar are just two of the millions Leading The Way is reaching daily with Biblical Truth—and that Truth is not returning void. *Name has been changed for her protection. TraininG uP Coaching the next Generation to spiritual Maturity
o
n March 13th-14th, the STS staff had the opportunity to host a disci-
pleship-focused event designed for 5th-12th grade guys and their dads.
The theme for the weekend was “Coaching the Next Generation to
Spiritual Maturity.”
In an effort to better equip our fathers and sons during the weekend, we invited two “coaches” in their respected fields to be our guest speakers. Matt Brinkley graduated from Covenant College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He has worked in student ministry since 1978 and he currently coaches youth ministers through PACT Ministry. His heart for youth pastors, students, and their families is evident in the numerous discipleship and training materials he has written for students, pastors, and parents. Ben Pollard is a Master Strength Coach currently working for Georgia State Athletics. He began his coaching career at his alma mater Texas Tech. Since 1989, he has coached at colleges
and universities in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. Beyond athletics, Ben has a passion for coaching young men as they focus on their life goals and Christ-like character. Ben’s challenge during the weekend to the 5th-12th grade guys was to grow in their faith. He challenged them that the main component for growth would be that each one of them must focus their hearts on living for God. This means living according to God’s Word while living in a world that encourages them to live for themselves. Matt focused on Genesis 1 and the creation account of man. There he pointed out that God created man to know God in an intimate relationship. Man was intended to duplicate that in
11
his relationships with his family and others. Matt, who has three children of his own, spoke from the heart and very candidly about fatherhood. He emphasized the need for dads to remember some important aspects of “Coaching the Next Generation to Spiritual Maturity”: As we were created by God to have a close relationship with Him, we are to be in a close relationship with our children. Our children need to watch us grow in our faith and know that we are not perfect. We need to be present in our children’s lives. We are called to disciple our children by living life on life. As we ended our time together with food, fellowship, and fun, the STS staff was excited to hear how God used the weekend to encourage and equip each dad and son to live out their faith and grow as a disciple of Jesus.

Impact Atlanta is a ministry of young professionals, mid-20s through 30s. Living and working in greater Atlanta as a young adult can be fun, but it can also be hectic and nerve racking. It’s all too easy in today’s crazy-busy culture to feel disconnected and alone. Impact Atlanta exists to help you purposely connect each week and to explore the things in life that really matter. At Impact Atlanta – virtually every week of the year – there are opportunities to gather with your peers to develop meaningful relationships and grow spiritually. Our goal is to make Impact Atlanta relevant, fun, life-enriching, God-honoring, and Christ-centered. Our motto is “Life Transformation through Following Christ.” Please join us for any of our gatherings, and always feel free to bring a friend!
our forMaT is: Two Sundays a month we meet on the 6th Floor from 7-8:30pm and enjoy food, fellowship, and community, along with a time of worship and a message from our Young Adult pastor, Dave Hubbard. One Sunday evening a month we do a social event of some kind (bowling, etc.), generally meeting off campus. One Sunday evening a month we do a big Night of Worship led by Aaron Keyes and/or his team. These events, held in the Commons lobby and Chapel, include complementary food trucks, coffee baristas, King of Pops, and an hour of great worship connecting us with our Creator. Food and fellowship time is from 7-8pm, followed by worship from 8-9pm. The nights of worship are open to ALL 20s & 30s, whether they are college students, single working professionals, or young marrieds without children.

aPosTles ColleGe felloWshiP At Apostles College Fellowship, we believe that the deepest possible joy and true satisfaction in life can be found exclusively in knowing, loving, and trusting Jesus Christ in deeper and fuller ways. In a world thirsty, fried, and overloaded with meaning, it is an exciting privilege to find there is nothing but higher and higher measures of contentment in walking with Him as the only Way, Truth, and Life (John 14:6). ACF desires to be a place for college students to find ever-growing rest, encouragement, healing, and strength in and through Jesus. We want to find creative ways to embrace the full council of all the Scripture teaches, as well as be a community that provides opportunity for strong discipleship relationships from believers out of college to lead groups of students in college. Our current meeting time is 7:00pm on Sunday nights in the STS Den, however, Lord willing, we will move to Thursday nights in the summer at the same time and place. We will be sure to communicate any and all specifics of these updates on meeting times as they develop!

CONNECTION AT THE CHURCH OF THE APOSTLES This summer we are introducing a new dimension of ministry designed to strengthen and encourage deeper connection among the people of God here at Apostles. Many people have expressed a desire to be able to connect with someone over a cup of coffee while at church on Sunday morning; however the tight schedule between Sunday school and worship services can make this a challenge. With these concerns in mind, we are pleased to introduce the Coffee Connection in room 229 ABC. The idea is for anyone interested to come in, get a cup of coffee, a snack to eat, and feel free enter into meaningful conversations with others without feeling the pressure to hurry and get to the next thing on the schedule. And here is the best news – with the exception of the main service, the room will be open from 8:45am-12:30pm. In other words, if you do not wish to go to Sunday school, you can hang out in the café. At any time between the beginning of Sunday school until 12:30pm (except the during the main worship service) you can stop by and enjoy the coffee, refreshments, and fellowship. You can even make a Sunday morning appointment with a church friend and meet in the café to catch up with them on what’s happening in your lives. The café opens on June 7th and will remain open through Labor Day, September 6th. The book of Acts says this about the early church: they devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching, to prayer, to breaking of bread (communion), and to fellowship. The staff’s vision for Apostles is that we would be a church where people are known, valued, and share their spiritual journeys with one another. With this vision in mind, we gladly introduce to you the Coffee Connection, praying that it will take the fellowship levels in our church to higher levels than ever.

brokenness: The heart God revives
a Wife after God’s own heart – selected Topics
What does it mean to be broken? This study, Brokenness: The Heart God Revives by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, will help us explore the blessing of brokenness. “True brokenness,” says Nancy, “is an ongoing constant way of life. Brokenness is the shattering of my self-will, and the absolute surrender of my will to the will of God” (Brokenness, pg. 53). Together we will learn about pride, personal revival, and the ways God mercifully walks with us through the difficult process of being broken.
Do you wonder what the Bible really says about marriage? Do you feel like God is calling you to make your marriage a priority? Do you want to know how you can please and serve God through this relationship? This summer class is a 4-week marriage-focused Bible study designed to align our hearts and wills with God’s Word through prayer, study, and authentic community. This study is for all women - no matter how long you have been married or if you hope to be married someday. Each week we will learn Biblical concepts through teaching and discussion, with topics including God’s design and roles for wives, intimacy, and forgiveness. There will be weekly homework that includes keeping a “thankful” list, studying God’s Word, praying for your husband or husband-to-be, and answering application questions that are heartprobing and action-oriented. Join us as we look into God’s beautiful plan for marriage and expect that He will do great things in our hearts and homes.

ThursdaY MorninGs fighting the seven deadly sins: learning to find Joy in God alone 9:45 – 11:15 a.m. June 18 – July 30 (7 weeks)
As we come to Christ and begin to follow Him, we discover patterns of sin in our lives that rob us of the joy of knowing Christ at a deeper level. Further examination of our sinful behaviors and motives reveals what we are trusting in and craving more than we are desiring and treasuring God. How does the Gospel reorient us and redeem our deepest desires? Join us for this 7week study as we examine the things that hold us back and how God’s grace frees us to be everything we are meant to be in Christ, for the glory of God.

Single Hearts for Christ is a women’s fellowship that brings single Christian women together to enjoy, enrich, and support one another. What better place to be than with a group where people know you, pray for you, and encourage you in your faith. As we see it, every single, divorced, and widowed woman has different needs, worries, hopes, and dreams. But it is certain that each one offers a plethora of experiences, perspectives, challenges, and gifts. In Christ, we have all that we need for life and ministry. If you are 40 years old or beyond and looking to connect with other Christian women, we have an open invitation for you. Our goal is to provide a secure place for you to grow in Christ and to establish friendships with other single women at The Church of The Apostles. Join us! For more information, contact Jan Blakeslee at jblakeslee@apostles.org.
The Close-Knit flock
Anne Hayes, Lay Leader If you enjoy needlework and the fellowship of Christian women, you are invited to reach out to others with the love and encouragement of Christ. For more information, contact Anne Hayes at awhayes12@gmail.com.
The Widows’ network
Marion Sharp, Lay Leader The Widows’ Network has helped many find solace in times of grief, as well as brought a sense of connection to other women. On six Sundays a year and at Christmas, special luncheons are held to honor the widows. The group plans other activities and service projects as well. A Monthly Gathering of Women in their 20s & 30s or young women in their 20s and 30s, life can often feel like a roller coaster spiraling out of control, a dry-as-bones desert, or a complicated maze. They desperately want to reach out for guidance and wisdom from women who have walked before them, but they oftentimes don’t know where to start. The Genuine Wisdom series seeks to meet that need in holding monthly gatherings where seasoned Christian women speak Biblical truth into the lives of women in their 20s and 30s. The concept originated after Rachel Felker, the Assistant Ministry Coordinator for Young Professionals, saw the desire of younger women to be taught by older women how to think biblically and live out their faith practically. By definition, a mentor is a wise and trusted counselor or teacher. Paul gives us a picture of the Christian mentoring process when he says in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.” Mentorship is a rare and valuable gift. Many young women don’t know how to begin the process of finding a godly mentor, and older women often feel out of touch with the next generation. That’s where the Genuine Wisdom series allows for the two groups to interact and thrive. At each monthly gathering, young women from
F

all walks of life—working professionals, young moms, and college students—join together to receive teaching from a mentor-aged, godly woman and partake in fellowship with one other. Jennifer Laminack, a single professional, says this about mentorship in her life: “To me, having a mentor means having someone who has ‘been there, done that,’ [someone] to give you the wisdom that only comes from hindsight when you're stuck in the middle of it. It also means having someone who can see things objectively from an outside perspective, as well as someone who is fully grounded in God's Word and can lead you back time and again to the Truth when the world starts to wear down on you. “The biggest mentor I've ever had in my life is my mother, who has always been there for me since I was little, and is always ready to give me wise council and lead me back to God's word and prayer for answers. I've had other women come along side me at different points in my life to pray for me, guide me, and encourage me about specific things, but not for the extended time that my mother obviously has.” For Jennifer, the Genuine Wisdom series has offered a way not only to connect to godly mentors but to create new friendships with women her age: “The Genuine Wisdom series has been
2015 Summer Ministry Guide_layout.qxp_Layout 1 5/11/15 3:05 PM Page 17
2015 suMMer MinisTrY Guide
very encouraging for me so far. It has been wonderful to hear Truth so clearly spoken from the women who have come to share, reminding us to soak in the Word. But most importantly so far for me, the Genuine Wisdom gatherings have been such a wonderful opportunity for me to meet other young women at the church who are in the same walk of life as me, since before I had become a little isolated from my age group for a while. Overall, it's just been amazing to see all the women of God from all different age groups come together to fellowship and encourage one another in the faith.” Whereas some young women, like Jennifer, have had mentors throughout their lives, such as their mothers, teachers, or older friends, some have never had a mentor and greatly value that opportunity. In certain stages of life, like earlymarried life or motherhood, a godly mentor can make such a difference in a young woman’s life. Leah Hamilton, a young stay-at-home mom, has felt a deep need for a mentor at this point in her life, and Genuine Wisdom has given her that opportunity. Her testimony about the impact of this series in her life only serves to affirm the need for godly mentors and biblical teaching in today’s culture and at Apostles: Leah says, “I have never had a mentor. As a wife and stay-at-home mother of two small children, I often crave to draw upon the wisdom of those who have walked through this season of life before me. Sometimes I feel I could love and support my husband more, but I don't always know how. I discover regularly my own limits and weaknesses trying to meet the needs of my children; I confess it's hard at times to keep an eternal perspective and persevere in God's strength. I think having a mentor is important because it is a relationship built on intentional spiritual development. While one woman offers her time, wisdom, and testimony, the other submits to being disci-
17
pled and confiding in a trusted leader. I believe a relationship with a mentor would be such a blessing knowing that we would both be edified in prayer and friendship. “Genuine Wisdom has already been such a gift. I look forward to a time set apart each month for women to be together sharing and learning about who God has made us to be and how we can best serve Him in our daily lives. As outlined in Scripture, it is both the privilege and the responsibility of older Christian women to mentor younger women in the faith, by word and by example. In this year-long (and beyond) series, our goal is to grow together in faith and obedience as we seek to understand and follow God’s design for biblical womanhood, and we welcome all who would like to be a part of this ministry in whatever capacity possible.

We have several opportunities for men to connect for growing spiritually, becoming accountable, and building friendships. Come and find your place to belong.
Men’s fraTerniTY Men’s Fraternity is a program designed to equip men to live and to lead as God intended, training men to press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. The church, the nation, and the world are suffering mightily from a lack of godly, masculine leadership. As traditional masculine virtues are assaulted and undermined in our modern culture, too many men either capitulate or seek satisfaction from counterfeits that are often selfish, juvenile, and destructive. We men are called to something higher, nobler, and truer. We know this, and we crave this, but too often flounder because we lack training and the fellowship of like-minded brothers. Men are in a battle against a ruthless and relentless enemy – personal, cultural, and societal forces that seek to alienate and confuse men at every age and in every walk of life. AUTHENTIC MEN understand the genesis of their manhood and are grounded in timeless principles and bedrock values. They are resolute and decisive, qualities that modern Western culture discourages, not because they have no value, but because such men are a threat to the prevailing norms and standards. AUTHENTIC MEN understand the need to learn, continually evaluate themselves, and train in the company of like-minded men. We invite all men of Apostles and our larger community to answer this call by joining us in the STS Gym on Friday mornings at 5:55 a.m. We meet for coffee and a light breakfast, followed by a presentation and small group discussion. We will endeavor to conclude no later than 7:40 a.m., but you are welcome to leave earlier if you need to. For more information, contact Brenda Williams at bwilliam@apostles.org or 404-591-1965.

Marriage, children, work, home, faith—the challenges abound. In today’s world it’s tough to be who God has called us to be. How do we

follow Him and lead others? How do we balance the demands at work with the responsibilities at home? How do we love our wives like Christ loved the Church? God did not intend for you to discover the answer to these and all the other important life questions by yourself. You were created to live in community with other men who are wrestling with the same issues, and who desire to live godly lives that count for God, but have not yet “put it all together.” Come join other men who meet here at the church on a weekday morning to study Scripture and apply it to real life. Share your life with other men who will help you see God’s truth more clearly and who will help you sharpen your focus on Christ.

The PaTh: Men’s MenTorinG The Path is a lay ministry at The Church of The Apostles that seeks to facilitate mentoring partnerships between men who desire to have accountability for their lives. The Bible is our primary source of guidance. We strive hard not to create our own “program” but instead to let the Holy Spirit guide in this effort. As a reference for our mentors, we use a book called The Heart of Mentoring by David A. Stoddard. Dave has worked closely with our core team, helping us fully grasp the Ten Powerful Principles of Effective Mentoring laid out in his book. The overriding theme is that mentoring is a process facilitated by a relationship. Each partnership is unique and tailored to the needs of the younger partner. Mentors are willing to open their lives, letting the partner see how the mentor succeeded or failed, and above all, learned from his experiences. Mentors are good listeners. They don’t have an agenda or want to change their mentoring partners. They want to help their mentoring partners navigate the narrow path of a Christian life. For more information, contact Rhonda Saduddin at rsaduddin@apostles.org or 404-564-3152.

Young families fellowship Class: Philippians
Baker Smith Room 230AB
Jim and Melissa Harper Room 607-610
Class meets through August.
The book of Job was written over 1,000 years before Christ. It is one of the oldest books of the Bible, but one of the most relevant today, since it examines the suffering of believers. While the book unveils the cosmic dimension of Satan’s accusations against the faithful before God, it also reveals Job’s belief in the saving work of the Redeemer. Job perseveres through adversity in the confidence that God is sovereign; that hardship occurs, so that the work of God might be displayed in his life and that God might be glorified. Join us in exploring the spiritual insights of the book of Job.
Come and enjoy a time of community as we study Philippians. Jim Harper, who currently leads Men’s Fraternity, will be the presenter. Breakfast for the whole family will be served at 8:45 a.m. and then teaching will start at 9:10 a.m.
ruth: friendship defined Chris Kitchens Room 231
The book of Ruth is one of the great love stories of the Bible. The major themes we will consider are: • God’s abiding presence in times of need. • Ruth’s steadfast commitment and friendship to Naomi. • God’s love for us, shown though Boaz, as the kinsman-redeemer.
Colossians
Mike Slaughter Room 612-613 Colossians is full of dramatic and powerful passages coupled with rich instructions that defend Christ’s deity and His sufficiency to reconcile men to God. If Ephesians can be labeled the epistle that portrays the “Church of Christ,” then Colossians portrays the “Christ of the Church.” Ephesians focuses on the Body while Colossians focuses on the Head. Come and learn in this course how Christ + Nothing = Everything.
auGusT Conversations with an old friend: stories from John’s Gospel Brian Maxwell 237 ABCD
While much in the Bible is strange to us, the Gospels are practically family. Most of us have heard their stories and know them well. What’s more, they define our faith, much as our family defines us. This August we’ll sit down with John as he enchants us again with some of those familiar yet remarkable stories of our Savior—and we’ll remember again why we love them so.
