Fall 2016 Ministry Guide

Page 1

WELCOME Back in 1985 when the Lord began to burden my heart for the birthing of a new congregation in this area, three things from the Word of God were clearly revealed to me in regard to worship:

1

Unhurried praise and adoration of our Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, Lord, and the Head of this church. This includes a regular time for breaking of bread at the Lord’s Table.

2 3

Prayer and intercession as an expression of our utter dependence on our heavenly Father through Jesus Christ in all things.

Bold proclamation that is relevant and instructive. Because we believe that the Bible is God’s self-revelation and therefore contains all the answers to all of man’s problems and needs, we preach it with all of its authority.

WHO WE ARE The Church of The Apostles has never been just another church. God has guided and sustained this church through a vision that was made clear to the Rector even before the church began. We conclude from this that God has something unique in mind for this church body and we operate our ministry according to a God-given core ideology. So as you attend Apostles, what can you expect to experience in the life and ministry of this church?

OUR VISION Reaching the lost and equipping the saints for the work of ministry. CORE VALUES

SUNDAYS

• We are here to lift up Jesus at all times in everything we do. The Bible says that Jesus came to the earth that He might have preeminence in all things and that includes The Church of The Apostles. This ministry is not about us.

At Apostles, we have Bible Classes (Sunday School) from 9:00-10:15 on Sunday mornings. This is a time when our children, youth, and adults meet for grounding, learning, connecting, and training in the wisdom and ways of the Lord. These classes gather together around Jesus, the living Word of God, and the Scripture, the written Word of God. There is also an early worship service in the chapel during this hour.

• We are constantly searching for opportunities and ways to make God’s awesome message of salvation clear to as many people as possible. We want to ensure that people have the chance to hear the message and see the heart of Jesus in a true light that is compelling and clear. • We also strive to present every person complete in Christ. The highest purpose of life on earth is to make joyful progress in our spiritual formation, which is becoming like Jesus. Therefore, all of our ministry activity here at The Church of The Apostles converges on this focal point. • Apostles is a church that is busy with Holy Spirit directed ministry activity that is executed with excellence. We firmly believe that excellence is Heaven’s first law and if we cannot do ministry with excellence to the glory of God, we simply don’t do it. • Finally, we speak the truth in love without compromise. Through the Bible, God reveals Himself as the fountain of truth and love. We declare His truth in love without compromise or apology.

At 10:30, we have our worship service in our main sanctuary from 10:30-12:00 on Sunday mornings. This is a time for celebration and communion, praise and prayer, evangelism and proclamation. Our heart’s desire is to lift up the resurrected Jesus in all of His saving power and glory. The sacrament of Baptism is practiced on the second Sunday of the month and the sacrament of Communion is practiced on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of the month.

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS On Wednesday evenings at 6:15 we offer programs for everyone in your family. The Midweek Gathering is our Wednesday service that includes a time of worship and an extended time of prayer. Come early at 5:00 for a family dinner (no reservations are needed).

CHILDREN’S Ministry apostles.org | 404-564-3141

O

ur vision is to reach children for Christ and to equip them to surpass us in the knowledge of God, in faith, in righteousness, in fruitfulness, and in evangelization. Early and consistent teaching in a child’s formative years has an enduring effect (Proverbs 22:6). We consider it a privilege to walk alongside you as parents as you train your children through faith-nurturing programs and ministries here at Apostles. In Scripture, the Church is portrayed as a living spiritual house with Christ as the foundation and cornerstone, and each believer as a stone. We want the children to understand that they are living stones, choice and precious in the sight of God. To children, our church is a picture of the Kingdom of God. We trust that each time they come to this place, they will be reminded that they are part of a bigger kingdom and in the presence of the King of kings.

“We consider it a privilege to walk alongside you as parents as you train your children through faith-nurturing programs and ministries here at Apostles.” We have special programs for children on Sunday mornings, on Wednesday evenings with “Running Church,” and on Tuesdays and Thursdays during women's ministry activities. Special events throughout the year are wonderful opportunities for families to work, serve, play, and worship together. Visit apostles.org for more information.

M

MEN’S Ministry apostles.org | 404-591-1988 We have several opportunities for men to connect for growing spiritually, becoming accountable, and building friendships. These include Men’s Fraternity, small groups, and mentoring opportunities.

Next Generation Fraternity

THE PATH: MEN’S MENTORING

Tuesday Mornings (Starts September 13) 6:45 a.m. - Light Breakfast & Teaching/Small groups What we all have in common is that we want to make a difference at home, at work, and in all areas of life. We believe the abundant life Jesus promises has a whole lot to do with meaningful friendships, as expressed in Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor; if one falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” Men 25-40 are invited to join us Tuesday mornings starting September 13.

The Path is a lay ministry at The Church of The Apostles that seeks to facilitate mentoring partnerships between men who desire to have accountability for their lives. The Bible is our primary source of guidance. We strive hard not to create our own “program” but instead to let the Holy Spirit guide in this effort. As a reference for our mentors, we use a book called The Heart of Mentoring by David A. Stoddard. Dave has worked closely with our core team, helping us fully grasp the “Ten Powerful Principles of Effective Mentoring” laid out in his book. The overriding theme is that mentoring is a process facilitated by a relationship. Each partnership is unique and tailored to the needs of the younger partner. Mentors are willing to open their lives, letting the partner see how the mentor succeeded or failed, and above all, learned from his experiences. Mentors are good listeners. They don’t have an agenda or want to change their mentoring partners. They want to help their mentoring partners navigate the narrow path of a Christian life.

Information: Mike Slaughter at mslaughter@apostles.org or 404-219-6039 (mobile).

Men’s Fraternity Friday Mornings 5:55 a.m. - STS Gym Men’s Fraternity is designed to equip men to live and to lead as God intended, training men to press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Jesus Christ. Information: Mike Slaughter at mslaughter@apostles.org.

MEN’S SMALL GROUPS Weekday Mornings Marriage, children, work, home, faith—the challenges abound. In today’s world it’s tough to be who God has called us to be. How do we follow Him and lead others? How do we balance the demands at work with the responsibilities at home? How do we love our wives like Christ loved the Church?

God did not intend for you to discover the answer to these and all the other important life questions by yourself. You were created to live in community with other men who are wrestling with the same issues. Come join other men who meet here at the church to study Scripture and apply it to real life. Share your life with other men who will help you see God’s truth more clearly and who will help you sharpen your focus on Christ.

Information: Rhonda Saduddin at rsaduddin@apostles.org or 404-564-3152.

Radical Mentoring Radical Mentoring is an intentional process for pouring into the next generation for the purpose of “making disciples.” The process has been developed and thoroughly tested in our culture for almost 15 years. But at its core, it’s a simple formula with roots stemming from what Jesus did with His disciples over 2000 years ago.

Radical Mentoring is about gathering around the mentor’s kitchen table with a group of younger guys once a month for 9 or so months. There’s no “curriculum” per se. It’s about doing life together, reading carefully selected Christian books on specific topics, and applying biblical principles to real life. The mentor’s training for this comes from having lived life for a longer time than has his mentees. The mentor’s credibility comes from his openness and authenticity, a willingness to share his story, warts and all, let his mentees in on what he’s done right in life, but more importantly, what he didn’t do right, and what he’s learned as a result. Information: Mike Slaughter at mslaughter@apostles.org or 404-219-6039 (mobile).

CONNECTING - COMMUNITY OR LIFE STAGE CLASSES

Breakthrough Living –The Book of Acts

Women Growing in Grace

Craig Lemasters Room 237 A, C Unleashing God’s Power in the Lives of Everyday People Have you ever wondered about God’s purpose for your life? God has given us the book of Acts to help us discover just that! God’s purposes have everything to do with the Gospel. He wants to use you as a witness to its power.

Linda McEntire, Casey Hawley Room 229 A Join us for this new course, designed for women, in which we will learn what the Bible has to say on these two very important topics:

Come walk with us as we see the advancement of the church and the fulfillment of God’s plan in bringing salvation to the ends of the earth. It is amazing to know that God has a place for each of us in the spreading of the Gospel in today’s world!

What does it mean to be a woman? The current cultural ideal for womanhood encourages women to be strident, sexual, self-centered, independent -- and above all -- powerful and in control. But sadly, this model of womanhood hasn't delivered the happiness and fulfillment it promised. The Bible teaches that it's not up to us to decide what womanhood is all about. God created male and female for a very specific purpose. His design isn't arbitrary or unimportant. It is very intentional, and He wants women to discover, embrace, and delight in the beauty of His design. He's looking for True Women!

The spread of the Gospel cannot be stopped!

Family Foundations John Whitney Room 612 Family Foundations is comprised largely of married couples with children from preschool to high school. The group strives to build a faith-based foundation for the development and strengthening of our individual families and church family bonds through the study of God’s Word in a sharing and participatory environment.

Single Women ABC Laurie Graffo Room 616 Join us as we study and discuss the book of Daniel and the major themes that dominate this book: the sovereignty of God; the self-destructive pride of humankind; the ultimate victory of God's kingdom; and the coming of His servant, the Messiah. This book is an inspiration and comfort to all believers in the times we are living.

The Journey Steve Peterson, Jordan Broggi, and T.J. Diamond Room 614-615 We’re on a journey . . . a journey toward Christ-likeness, a journey that takes us through the gap. This gap is the differential between where we want to be in our walk with God and where we really are. True life-change happens on this journey. This Sunday morning class will combine solid biblical teaching with authentic table discussions about how we live out God’s truth. We’ll explore the Gospel of Mark, with time for honest, applicationoriented conversation about the challenges and joys of the journey.

Part 1 True Woman 101: Divine Design

Part 2 Using Your Gifting for God’s Glory Using I Corinthians 12 as the primary text, we will explore the blessing and diversity of spiritual gifts. Learn more about your gifts and how other saints have used the same gifts to serve others and to bring glory to God. Seek God's guidance on how He would have you use your unique gifting in your home, neighborhood, family, workplace, and church. Finally, we will explore how to develop your gifts and bring forward the best that is in you to bring Him pleasure, to bless others, and to experience the joy and satisfaction of using your gifts fully for the Kingdom.

Young Families Fellowship Kevin Cuthbertson Room 620-623 As a church that clearly and faithfully teaches salvation by grace through faith alone, we want our lives to model the faith that we proclaim. James, the brother of Jesus, wrote that faith without works is dead and, in his letter, he lays out for us the evidences of a living faith. In this class, we will work through the book of James and seek to answer the question: What does it look like to be a citizen of the Kingdom? Breakfast will be served for the whole family beginning at 8:45 and class will begin by 9:15. For more information, contact Kevin Cuthbertson at kcuthbertson@apostles.org.

LEARNING - STUDY CLASSES WITH A LEARNING EMPHASIS

TRAINING CLASSES - DEVELOPING LIFE SKILLS

The Gospel of John

Knowing and Doing God’s Will

Jimmy Goolsby Room 617 The Apostle John clearly states his purpose for writing this Gospel..."but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31). John's Gospel is about knowing and loving Jesus Christ as He wants to be known and loved.

Bobby Mitchell, Sr. Room 239 The continuing study of how to know and do God's will, using Paul and his journeys as a model for us today. This year we'll use some of the kings of the Old Testament to expand the study, while continuing to search out some of life's foundational questions related to walking with God, such as: Does God call us today? Are we listening? How do we recognize God's voice and respond in obedience? Can I really walk with God in the turmoil of America today? How can I make a difference? This study addresses these and many other questions and is all about practical applications in today's world.

Join us for this in-depth study that will radically direct our hearts in devotion toward Jesus Christ and finding all of life's meaning and fulfillment in Him, our Lord and Savior.

The Gospel of John Mike Sessoms Room 236 Which verses come to mind quickly if asked the question, “Who is Jesus Christ?” The Gospel of John contains a multitude of our favorite verses such as John 3:16, but it also records for us the clearest picture of who Jesus is. Our study will seek to unfold this record, so that each one, no matter how long they have walked with God, will reach a deeper and clearer understanding of our wonderful Savior.

The Book of Romans Baker Smith Room 248 Have you ever struggled to clearly express your faith to others? In the book of Romans, Paul explains the Gospel as the righteousness that comes from God, which can be received only by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans cleared up confusion for many who were striving to reach Heaven, but could not obtain peace with God, including spiritual leaders like Augustine, Martin Luther, and John Wesley. For them, Romans became the key to the rest of Scripture, revealing God's plan for the church and world history. Because Paul says the Gospel is the power of God, join us in this study, and experience new strength and encouragement in your life.

Threads in Scripture: One Way of Learning to Study God's Word Lee Holston Room 246 We will learn a systematic way to study Scripture deductively beginning with a study of the book of Mark and, in the process, follow interesting topical threads through God’s Word.

What the Bible Really Says Stan Carder Room 243 “Spirituality” - as the term pops up in conversations with friends or neighbors, what is our response? What is our belief about “spirituality”? It seems every person has their own interpretation and meaning of the word. How does this term “spirituality” relate to our Christian faith? As believers in Christ, we must be grounded in the truths and concepts of God’s Word in order to be able to assist our friends in coming to the realization that true “spirituality” is found in Jesus Christ who truly is the only Way, the only Truth, and the only Life. This class will clearly present the crucial beliefs and doctrines of our Christian faith, as well as how we are to apply these truths to our everyday living as we seek to honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Whose Worldview? Dal Sumrell Room 244 The lack of a godly worldview has caused the church, our nation, and the world to suffer immensely, yet the Bible clearly tells us to, “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” The goal of this course is to re-discover and re-infuse God’s worldview into our personal lives so we can impact communities, our counties, cities, states, and our nation for God. Join us as we examine the Scriptures first and foremost, as well as DVD sessions from “The Truth Project,” “Monumental,” “Transformation in the Marketplace,” and documents from our U.S. National Archives, to re-establish the foundations for the worldview and life system that God intends to govern every area of our existence. Our purpose is to help equip and develop each of us to more effectively address current worldview issues in a very practical way, which starts with our personal morality, and works its way out to cultural issues and into the more far-reaching implications of the government of our communities, and our beloved America. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.”
