Appalachian Soccer Stadium at The Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex In 2014, Appalachian soccer begins its sixth season of play at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Completed in 2008, the facility features two artificial turf fields as well as a picturesque panoramic view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The High Country Soccer Association (HCSA) Ted Mackorell Complex is located off of Brookshire Road, and is easily accessible from US-421. In addition to the Appalachian Soccer Stadium, two other fields (one turf, one grass) provide local high school HCSA teams a chance to play soccer throughout the year. The stadium is complete with a modern press box and seating for up to 1,000 spectators. In 2010, a new addition was added to the complex, featuring locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams. Each locker room contains 30 lockers, showers, bathrooms, television and sound system. Additionally, the structure includes a concession stand and restrooms for the public.

App State finished its first year in the Sun Belt conference with a 7-8-3 record with a 1-2-2 Sun Belt mark. The Mountaineers advanced to the semi-final of the Sun Belt tournament but fell short of reaching the title game after a 2-0 loss to the eventual champion, Hartwick.

and will be starting goal keeper again for the upcoming year. West will be backed up by Jake Chasteen and Jaron Bradley.

Head coach Matt Nelson returns for his fifth season at the helm of the men’s Mountaineer soccer program. Nelson has a career record of 28-25-18 at Appalachian. Jeff Bilyk begins his first season as an associate head coach after three years as an assistant. The Mountaineers will need to replace production of last years leading goal scorer, Stanley Broaden. Stephen Chapman, Donovan Japp, and Alex Herbst will look to carry the load for the Mountaineer offense in 2015. Chapman had six of the eight goals the team scored in preseason while Herbst lead the Sun Belt in assists a year ago. The Mountaineer back line is anchored by three returners in 2014 first-team selection Alex Beranger, second-team selection Ben Steen, and team-captain Jordan Melia. Appalachian newcomers Raheem Somersall, Jamir James, Daniel Avila and Ian Bennett have all seen playing time during the preseason and will fight to make in impact during their rookie campaigns. Matt Nelson

Head Coach • Fifth Season Lynn, 2000 21-17-15 (Career) • 21-17-15 (Appalachian State)

Matt Nelson enters his fifth season at the helm of Appalachian State men’s soccer in 2015. The 2011 Southern Conference Coach of the Year took the Mountaineers to the Sun Belt Conference semifinals in its inaugural season in the league. In 2014, App State finished 7-8-3 and 1-4-4 in conference play.. Nelson enters the year with an overall record of 28-25-18. Under Nelson’s guidance in 2014, six Mountaineer student-athletes earned all-conference recognition. Stanley Broaden, Alex Herbst, and Alex Beranger were first-team selections. Stephen Chapman, Donovan Japp and Ben Steen were all tabbed to the second-team.

2015 Appalachian State MEN’S SOCCER

Season Outlook

Nelson took over as head coach three matches into the 2011 season and the Mountaineers rattled off 11-straight games without a loss (7-0-4) falling one game short of the program’s longest unbeaten streak. His Apps recorded a programbest 11 shutouts in 2011 and ranked among the nation’s top 12 defenses in goals-against, shutout percentage and save percentage. While earning 2011 Southern Conference Coach of the Year in the process, three of his Mountaineers were named to the allconference second team and two others were named to the all-freshman squad. Appalachian also advanced to the SoCon tournament semifinals for the second-straight season. During his first season as assistant at App State, Nelson coached freshman Collin Taylor to 2008 first-team all-conference goalkeeper honors and all-freshman accolades. Nelson helped the App State defense lead the Southern Conference in fewest goals allowed and goals against average. In four years with the Mountaineers, Nelson’s keepers have racked up 20 total shutouts. Nelson’s collegiate career remains one of the finest in Lynn goalkeeping history. In 1998, he allowed just six goals with a goals-against average of 0.37, both program records. His career numbers include 59 games played (57 started), 5,023 minutes, 31 shutouts, 49 wins, 30 goals against, a 0.54 goals-against average, 134 saves, and a save percentage of .817; all career figures are second-best in Lynn history. Nelson was an NSCAA all-Region and Scholar all-America player in 1999. He was named to the NSCAA Scholar all-South region twice (1998, 99) and was a two-time all-Sunshine State Conference goalkeeper (1998, 99).

In 2001, he played for KilKenny City of the Irish Premier League before heading back to the USL, this time with the South Jersey Barons and then the Virginia Beach Mariners where he played until 2006. In his final season in 2006, Nelson was selected to the USL First Division all-Star team. In 2007, he was named to the USL all-Second Division second team after a successful season with the Harrisburg City Islanders. As well as a successful professional career, Nelson also brings four years of coaching experience to the program. While working with Virginia Wesleyan College as goalkeeper coach, Nelson helped the Marlins achieve two Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships and a record of 41-15-4 from 2003 to 2005. Nelson also coached William & Mary’s women’s program, helping the Tribe to a record of 23-5-13 as assistant coach in 2005 and 2006. @appstatesports

SoCon PLAYER OF THE YEAR

SoCon COACH OF THE YEAR

Nine Mountaineers have earned Southern Conference Player of the Year honors 13 times in the storied history of ASU soccer, more than any other program in the SoCon. Appalachian maintained a stranglehold on the prestigious honor during the 1970s and 1980s with nine straight Players of the Year from 19771985. Thompson Usyian earned the honor three time during that period (1977, 78, 80) and still remains the only SoCon player to be dubbed Player of the Year three times in his career. athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of nondiscrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants. APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

MORE THAN A LOCATION Appalachian’s beautiful setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains is more than a location – it profoundly shapes how our community lives, works and learns together. Our commitment to sustainability is a tradition, not a trend, and Appalachian is an active steward of North Carolina’s interconnected financial, cultural and natural resources. This commitment shows in many ways, including our tuition rates, textbook rental program, commitment to energy efficiency, economic viability and equitable citizenship.
