The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to the high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institutional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing App State is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of non-discrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni and the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.

He officially began in the role on April 6, 2015. Gillin, 46, possesses more than two decades of professional experience in collegiate athletics, most recently as deputy director of athletics at the University of Missouri. He spent three years at Missouri and played a prominent role in the Tigers’ transition to the Southeastern Conference. At Mizzou, Gillin was involved in all facets of the athletics department’s financial planning and budget development, was a member of the department’s strategic plan development team and oversaw all external operations, including the Tiger Scholarship Fund development unit, Mizzou Sports Properties, strategic communications and game operations. Most notably, he helped lead the University’s athletics capital campaign and was involved in a $102 million facilities enhancement plan for football, baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track and field. Additionally, he was responsible for all facets of Missouri’s day-to-day operations in the absence of the athletics director, had direct oversight over men’s basketball and was part of a three-person administrative team that oversaw the Tigers’ football program. Prior to his arrival at Missouri in 2012, Gillin spent a decade in North Carolina in various roles with ISP Sports/IMG College, the country’s leading collegiate multimedia, marketing and licensing/brand management company. During his 10-year stint with Winston-Salem-based ISP/IMG, he served as the company’s senior vice president (2002-07), executive vice president/chief sales officer (2007-10) and senior vice president for college properties (2010-12). In those roles, he managed the company’s entire sales force, which included approximately 350 employees and more than 90 university and conference partnerships. Before joining the ISP/IMG corporate headquarters, Gillin spent the first nine years of his athletics career on college campuses. He began as an assistant ticketing/business office director at Lehigh (1993-94) then served as an assistant marketing director at New Mexico (1994-95) and Missouri (1995-97). In 1997, he became the general manager of Mizzou Sports Properties before taking the same position with Syracuse Sports Properties in 1999. Bill Dicus enters his 24th year at Appalachian State University and his 22nd at the helm of the men’s golf program. Coach Dicus helped lead the transition of the Mountaineers in 2015 from the Southern Conference to Sun Belt Conference and garnered three top five finishes. The top 15 team rounds in program history have all been under Dicus’ watch. Appalachian has finished as high as fourth (twice in 2001 and 2013) in the Southern Conference, one of college golf’s most prestigious conferences. Dicus’ golfers have achieved as individuals as well. With Dicus as coach, the men’s team has won 11 individual tournament titles from 1997-2014. All of the golfers that own top 10 career stroke averages played during Dicus’ tenure. Members of Dicus’ men’s squads have been selected to the all-conference team three times (Casey Komline in 2012 and 2013 and Bern Gregory in 2000) and two current golfers (Caleb Keck and Lee Mitchell) were named to the all-freshman team in 2013. While at Appalachian, he also coached the women’s team for 15 seasons from 1993-2008. The Mountaineers placed second in the SoCon three times, placing behind only national-power Furman. During his time as the women’s head coach, Dicus saw his golfers earn six all-conference honors. Dicus also coached Kelly Clements, the only Freshman of the Year in program history. Members of the women’s golf team placed in the top five of tournaments 11 times during his15 years with team, including a first place finish from Charleen Bradley in 2001 at the Draper Valley Invitational. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Dicus is a class A member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America. 2016 APPLACHIAN STATE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S GOLF

Heather Brown

HEAD COACH APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY Eighth Season Heather Brown begins her eighth season at the helm of Appalachian State University women’s golf in 2016 after leading the team to much success since taking the women’s program over from Bill Dicus in 2008. Brown guided the Mountaineers well in transitioning to a new era of App State golf as Appalachian State moved into the Sun Belt Conference from the Southern Conference. The team finished fourth in the 2015 Sun Belt Tournament with a combine score of 612, just 19 strokes off the lead. The Mountaineers had two student-athletes in the top five, with Haley Zagoria (fifth) shooting a 74 and 75, and Emily Stinson (tied-ninth) shooting a 76 and 75. Brown also had her women’s golf program earn a NCAA Public Recognition Award for the second-straight time last year. The award is given to programs who rank among the top 10 percent of all Division I in their respective sport in the the latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures. The Mountaineers were one of four Sun Belt Conference women’s golf programs to win the award and also joined other notable institutions such as Brown, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, North Carolina, Princeton, Stanford and Yale. In her time coaching at App State, Brown has led the Mountaineers to unprecedented success, both for the team and individually. Four of the top five lowest single season team averages have come under Brown’s watch. The top five lowest team rounds in program history have all come with Brown as coach. Brown’s players also hold nine of the top 10 lowest individual season stroke averages. Brown is familiar with seeing her golfers earn top finishes. Since Brown has been at Appalachian, Mountaineer golfers have won 10 individual titles and have 47 top-five tournament finishes. Brown has coached one all-conference team selection in Yue Xu, who played from 2009-13 and was selected for the honor in 2011. Xu was named to the all-freshman team in 2010. Statistically, the 2012-13 season was Appalachian’s best season under Brown. A trio of seniors led the way for most of the season as Xu, Lauren Smith and Rumbidzai Masamvu each picked up tournament wins and took control of many of the school records. In her first season at the helm, Brown’s Mountaineers posted four top-10 team finishes, including fourth place as the host team at the Mimosa Hills Women’s Intercollegiate. She helped Kerri Dice and Brooke DeHart to breakout seasons in 2008-09 as the duo shaved a combined four strokes off their averages from the year before. Brown was tabbed to lead the Appalachian State University women’s golf program on Friday, May 16, 2008. Brown, a 1989 Appalachian graduate, brought 18 years of professional golf experience with her back to the High Country. From 2002-08, the Madison, Conn. native headed up the Golf Juniors program at Richter Park Golf Course in Danbury, Conn., where she mentored dozens of young golfers, coached high school golfers and taught several hundred private lessons on an annual basis. Additionally, Brown helped lead the Danbury High School girl’s team to a state championship in 2004-05. Prior to her time in Danbury, Brown served as a golf professional throughout Connecticut at Tamarack Country Club from 1994-95 and 19982001, Rolling Hills Country Club from 1996-97, Cabarrus Country Club from 1992-93 and Klein’s Driving Range from 1995-96. As a collegiate, Brown played for App State head coaches Tom Adams and Peter Rucker from 1984 to ‘88. She was both the captain and team MVP in 1988. Her former teammate, Angie Ridgeway, is the women’s golf coach at Wofford College.

The university combines a small-town atmosphere with a strong academic reputation. Appalachian’s academics are supported by an accomplished faculty, close, personal interaction between students and faculty, and intimate class sizes that average 26 students. Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates leaders in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. Appalachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and service to communities, both locally and globally. Appalachian’s 410-acre main campus includes 22 academic buildings, a 210,000-square-foot library, 19 residence halls, three dining facilities and 11 recreational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in New York City and off-campus programs in 10 counties through collaboration with area community colleges.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division 1 varsity sports at Appalachian State University, 10 for men and 10 for women. Appalachian was a dominant force in the Southern Conference for more than 40 years before joining the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014 – one of 10 conferences that are members of the Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Appalachian student-athletes work just as hard in the classroom: • * In May 2015, Appalachian athletics was awarded the Sun Belt’s 2015 Institutional Graduation Rate Award for 2013-14. The award is given to the school with the highest Federal Graduation Rate among all current Sun Belt members. • * 101 Appalachian student-athletes were named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List in fall 2014, an honor given to student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. • * 109 Appalachian student-athletes were named to the Sun Belt’s Academic Honor Roll in fall 2014, an honor given to student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0-3.49. • * 210 student-athletes were awarded academic honors, making Appalachian the school with the most students to do so.

APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for studentathletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institutional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing Appalachian is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its

athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of nondiscrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants. APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support

MORE THAN A LOCATION Appalachian’s beautiful setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains is more than a location – it profoundly shapes how our community lives, works and learns together. Our commitment to sustainability is a tradition, not a trend, and Appalachian is an active steward of North Carolina’s interconnected financial, cultural and natural resources.
