2015 APPALACHIAN STATE WRESTLING

SEASON PREVIEW

JohnMark Bentley enters his seventh season at the helm of App State wrestling. In his time at Appalachian, Bentley has a career record of 54-48-1 after a 9-8 overall record in 2014-15. Bentley was tabbed as Co-SoCon Coach of the Year along with Daniel Elliot of Gardner-Webb. The Mountaineers return several key contributors from last year’s team that rattled off six-straight conference wins and was the runner-up at the Southern Conference Championship.

125 Vito Pasone will take over the starting role at the 125-pound weight class after the loss of three-time NCAA qualifier Dominic Parisi to graduation. Pasone competed in the 133-pound weight class in 2014-15 and was the runner-up in the SoCon Championship. Pasone brings experience into the new role with two years of division I wrestling under his belt. Bentley expects Pasone to compete at the Southern Conference level as well as the national level. Newcomer Logan Durham will fill the backup role and add depth at 125 pounds.

Denzel Dejournette returns for his junior year after enjoying a breakout season in 2014-15, winning his first 17 matches and capping it off with a SoCon title in the heavyweight division. Michael Longo was crowned SoCon champion at 141 pounds in his freshman season and looks to repeat as a sophomore in 2015-16. Dejournette and Longo both won a match at the 2015 NCAA Championship. The Apps also return two second-place finishers at the SoCon tourney in Vito Pasone and Forrest Przybysz as well as Southern Conference Freshman of the Year Nick Kee. Bentley welcomes two new assistants, Todd Schavrien and Josh Roosa, to his staff for the 2015-16 campaign. Schavrien comes to App State after spending last season as an assistant for the 2014-15 dual team national champions, Missouri. Schavrien was a three-time NCAA qualifier while wrestling at for the Tigers. Roosa joins Bentley’s staff after working as an assistant at the University of Buffalo last season. Roosa is a graduate of Bloomsburg where he enjoyed a very successful wrestling career.

133 With Pasone moving to 125 pounds, Jacob Grigg, will take over as the starter in the 133-pound weight class. Bentley praised the amount off work Grigg has put in during the offseason to prepare for a starting role. Bentley has high expectations for Grigg this season and believes that hes ready to compete for a SoCon title and get into the national tournament. 141 Michael Longo is the returning Southern Conference champion at 141 pounds. Longo looks to repeat as SoCon champ and progress further into the NCAA Championship. Last season, Longo won a match at the NCAA’s. Longo was named to the preseason all-SoCon team.

The Mountaineers are primed to make anther run at the Southern Conference title and have multiple wrestlers at the NCAA Tournament.

149 After struggling to find production at the 149 pound weight class last season, Bentley brought in two freshmen in Matt Zovistoski and Miller Clark. The newcomers will compete for the starting role as the season begins. Zovistoski is from Paramus, N.J. and was an All-American his sophomore and senior years. 157 David Peters-Logue made the move down to 157 pounds over the offseason after competing in the 174-pound weight class, last season. Peters-Logue had posted a 3-2 record last season in two tournaments. Peters-Logue earned the nod over newcomer Angel Najar in an offseason wrestle-off. Bentley believes Najar is a tough competitor who can challenge PetersLogue for the starting role. 165 Two returning Mountaineers swapped weight classes for the 2015-16 season at 165 and 174 pounds. Forrest Przybysz will move down to 165 pounds while Nick Kee will go up to 174 pounds. Przybysz had great success last season as he won his last six SoCon matches in the regular season and then was the runner-up at the Southern Conference Tournament. Bentley believes that the switch will be good for Przybysz after facing the heavier weight class competition all of last year. Przybysz will look to make his first NCAA appearance at his new weight class.

184 The Mountaineers have struggled at 184 pounds the last few seasons but will lean on Taylor Jackson a transfer from Rutgers to make the weight class competitive. Jackson, a redshirt sophomore, brings collegiate experience and toughness to the App State line up. Bentley likes how hard Jackson has worked and believes he can compete for a SoCon title. Marcus Johnson will serve as the primary backup. 197 Tyler Radford was the starter at 197 last season but compiled a 5-23 record during his sophomore campaign. Randall Diabe, a freshman from Greensboro, N.C., will challenge for the starting spot after the pair split wrestle-offs during the offseason. Bentley believes the competition between the two will bring out the best in both wrestlers.

2015-16 Appalachian State Wrestling

SEASON PREVIEW

HWT All-Southern Conference selection Denzel Dejournette returns as the SoCon heavyweight champion. Last season Dejournette went 6-1 in the SoCon with an overall mark 33-6 on the way to his first NCAA appearance. This season, Dejournette has his sights set higher on moving further in the national tournament and securing All-American status. The redshirt junior has drastically improved every season since arriving at Appalachian and Bentley believes he will continue that pattern and make another leap in 2015-16.

174 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, Nick Kee, will wrestle at 174 pounds for the upcoming season after moving up from 165 pounds during the offseason. Kee was the only Mountaineer to a have an unblemished Southern Conference record last season at 7-0. Kee will look to make his first appearance in the national tournament this season after narrowly missing a bid in 2014 after placing third at the SoCon tournament. www.appstatesports.com

Trotman also received Freshman of the Year accolades in 2008, and both Ervin and Blevins were recognized as the SoCon Tournament Outstanding Wrestler during Bentley’s coaching tenure. athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of nondiscrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants. APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
