R-II Board accepts resignation of Secondary Principal Matt Smith The Paris R-II Board of Education met in special session on Thursday, July 12 in the district boardroom. For the third time in as many principals, the board members approved the resignation of a secondary principal, this time current principal Matt Smith, in the months of June or July. The board members also accepted the resignation of first grade teacher Audrey Smith. “Matt and Audrey did a great job while they were here and the district wishes them good luck in their new positions,” said Paris R-II District Superintendent Chris Johnson. “If it was just me I would have been here forever,” said former Principal Smith. “I love this place, but I have a family to think of and two young children.”

“I won’t be any happier driving to work at Centralia than I was driving to work were,” added Smith. “I am going to miss working here – it was great.” According to Superintendent Johnson the district has advertised the job opening and is currently receiving applications for the position. “I will review the applications and start calling individuals for interviews,” said Superintendent Johnson. Al\so during the special session, the board members also approved the move of Special Education teacher Kelly Williams move to High School Special Ed and Gretchen O’Bryan from kindergarten teacher to Elementary Special Education. On Monday, July 17, the Monroe County Fair 4-H crowned the 4-H Royalty. The team members gave the board members a thorough overview, including pictures, of their trip to FBLA Nationals, in San Antonio, Texas. Also the board members approved or tabled bids. Team voting will be provided prior to Aug. 7 primary election According to Monroe County Clerk Sandra Francis team voting will be provided prior to the Tuesday, Aug. 7 Primary Election. Anyone who is shut in and unable to go to the polls may request the “Absentee Team” to visit them in their home, or they may contact the County Clerk’s Office to be placed on the permanent disabled list. Missouri Election Law 115.284 (1) establishes an absentee voting process to assist persons with permanent disabilities in the exercise of their

voting rights. Clerk Francis urges anyone who would like to be placed on the list to contact her office by either mail or telephone. Those people who are already on the permanent list will remain on the list and do not need to contact the office. Individuals may contact the County Clerk’s Office by mail at 300 North Main, Room 204, Paris, MO 65275 or telephone at 660-327-5106. The Absentee team will visit area nursing homes on Tuesday, July 31.

The 43rd Annual Mark Twain Old Threshers Reunion was a qualified success according to Old Threshers Committee President Angie Fields. “We had a great show this year,” said Fields. “We had a really great crowd and our vendors included items from goat milk soap, Tupperware and horse tack.” The actual kick-off for Old Thresher’s began on Thursday night, July 8, with the 13h Annual Fish Fry, at the Old Thresher’s Building. A standing room only crowd enjoyed the fish and entertainment by Johnny Ragsdale and band. The weekend’s event featured numerous activities including the draft horse pull, a miniature draft/pony pull, a pet show, children’s games, flea market, musical entertainment, a farm horse pull, a dunking booth, an old time threshing display, a kiddie pedal pull, a very well received parade, with Mary Curtright serving as Grand Marshal, sawmill demonstrations, numerous vendors, a farm tractor pull and more. “Our vendors were very happy with the crowds each day even with the hot weather,” added Fields. Business at the Old Threshers food booth was brisk as was participation in each and every event. The Old Thresher Committee consists of President Angie Fields; Vice-President Rob Goodding (Cairo); Secretary Cindy Hultz (Paris); Treasurer Mary Curtright (Paris); and members Tuck Carter

Tom Miller, of Shelbina, with Duke and Red pulling, took home first place in the farm horse pull. Miller has been pulling for 12-15 years. “I just enjoy pulling,” said Miller when asked why he attends horse pulls. “It is all about everybody getting along and having Continued to page 9
