Vietnam veteran Donald Wheeler, presented medals earned decades ago

Donald Wheeler, a Paris veteran of the Vietnam War, received medals he earned during his time in the service Friday, March 13, at the Monroe City VFW Post. Rep. Sam Graves arrived to present the honor, saying that ensuring veterans receive their medals was a favorite part of his job. \Wheeler served in the U.S. Army from April 1967 through November 1969. The sudden death of his grandfather led to his discharge from the army and prevented him from receiving the medals he had earned. Wheeler received a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze service star with one silver service star, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device (1960) and a Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar. Serving in Vietnam, “was an experience I wouldn’t take a million dollars for, but I wouldn’t give one dollar to do it again,” Wheeler said. The event was attended by Wheeler and his wife, Patricia; members of the VFW Post 4240, Bill Crenshaw, Wayne Doolin and Anthony Yates; members of Graves’ staff and representatives of various media organizations. Wheeler described receiving his medals as emotional and said he planned to

About Bettyville: Author Hodgman will be featured at the Little Dixie Libraries sometime in April to showcase his book. Look for a comprehensive article on these pages during this visit. According to the Facebook page, hosted by BookCourt, when George Hodgman leaves Manhattan for his hometown of Paris, he finds himself—an unlikely caretaker and near-lethal cook—in a head-on collision with his aging mother, Betty, a woman of wit and will.
