On Tuesday, March 24 Jason Lage, 32, Columbia, with his attorney James McConnell, appeared before 10th Circuit Associate Judge David Mobley, at the Monroe County Courthouse, for his preliminary and probable cause hearing. Lage is charged with seconddegree murder (A Felony), and two other

felony charges - armed criminal action and tampering with physical evidence in felony prosecution. All charges rose out of the February 19, 2014, shooting death of Zachary Dawson, in Madison.

Right of Passage…

Friday evening, March 20, 20 local ladies bared their hearts and souls to the audience during the question time of the Alpha Phi sorority sponsored Miss Paris Pageant.

One of my favorite responses was by a Junior Miss Paris who said that she has not had her most memorable moment as of yet but will have it when her mother gets her new heart. Now this did bring tears to my eyes so thankfully I did not have to say much to the audience after this portion of the event. The whole evening was one moment like this after another.

My hat is off to the members of the Alpha Phi Sorority for providing this venue for young women to have the opportunity to be confidant, articulate, poised and successful – all in one evening. There was a practice evening on Wednesday, March 18 where Destiny Arnett who was instrumental in the opening number, helped the young ladies practice their routines until it became rote in their memories.

This was the 80th successful year of Miss Paris. The first Miss Paris was Liza Alexander (Ragland) (1935) and the current reigning Miss Paris is Kaylee Brown, daughter of Melissa and Doug Graupman with 78 in between. Aly Francis, daughter of Tony and Barb Francis, took home the evening’s Junior Miss Paris title.

dies changing clothes between times on stage; questions asked and answered; enjoyable entertainment performances by the Paris Nightingale - Taylor Ross; the songful musings of Destiny Arnett; and amazing, energetic performances by the Mid Mo Kats.

It was a tough choice for the excellent group of experienced judges who gave scores for each portion and those were then tabulated by sorority members Marie Ebbesmeyer and Suzy Otto before being sent to the emcee for the announcements.

Winners included 2015 Miss Paris Kaylee Brown; 1st Runner-up Riley Barton; 2nd Runner-up Taylor Gruber; High Ticket Sales - Autumn Taylor; Miss Congeniality – Riley Barton; Ola Mae Ball Award: Micayla Hagenhoff. 2015 Junior Miss Paris Aly Francis; 1st Runner-up Josie Rentschler; 2nd Runner-up Shannon Pugh; High Ticket Sales – Aly Francis; Miss Congeniality – Brie Ensor.

MY TURN Revive Our Postal Service

The other day in the local Postal Office I noticed the friendly lady who usually takes care of the window sweeping up in the front lobby. This was now a part of her duties as an employee.

This and many other of the cuts that are being made at the Postal Service remind me of just another thing our government has done to and not for the country. The reason for the cuts and shrinkage of jobs and services is said to be because the Postal Service is broke. Actually its annual revenue exceeds operating costs by about 1.4 billion. But back in 2006 the Congress passed the so called “Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act” that required the Service to pre-fund all of its retirement benefits for the next 75 years and pay for it in 10 years. No business or other governmental agency has to pre-fund even one year of benefits. This law has added a mandated and artificial debt of 5 Billion annually to the loss side of their financial picture.

So now there are plans to shut down about half of the 487 mail processing centers around the country, to cut almost a third of postal jobs in one year, to eliminate Saturday delivery of mail and to reduce the hours of business for more than half of our Post Offices. Add to this the corporatizing of mail products by having Staples operate postal Kiosks in their stores using low paid and poorly trained personnel.

Instead of expanding services and products of the Post Office the government is letting it slowly bleed to death.

Other countries have successful Postal Services with some even having Postal Banks to serve small communities that can’t support major banks.

The local Post Offices are unique in their present position across America to deliver marketable services that are presently not available.

We lack only the desire and forethought to develop and market additional services.

90 Years March 27, 1925 Miss Allen Starrett, seventh grade pupil of the Stoutsville school, who will represent Monroe County in the district grade spelling contest at Kirksville, April 11. Miss Starrett is the granddaughter of M.S. Starrett of Stoutsville.

Cy Evans reports the sale of the Capp Ransdell farm of 100 acres, cast of Granville to Charles W. Smith of south of Paris for $11,000.

James Hohimer was re-nominated for city collector at Paris at the Democratic City Primary, Friday, by a majority of 114 votes over the combined vote for the other two candidates, Clarence Smock and Mrs. Ada Pool.

Leo Lockwood was given the contract for delivering ice in Paris for the city plant this year, his bid being the best. As in the past, ice will be delivered for 60 cents per hundred pounds.

R.L. Yowell has moved to the Roy Peak farm, and Tom Yowell to the Lee Turner place.

75 Years March 21, 1940 Miss Gloria Hunter, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H.B. Hunter of Paris, was selected as St. Pat’s Queen at the University of Missouri. Miss Hunter was entered in the race for that coveted honor by Bobbie Caldwell, son of County Highway Engineer and Marcus Caldwell of Monroe County. Bobbie is a student in the College of Engineering, which sponsors the St. Pat’s ball every year and selects as queen a young man who is outstanding for beauty and grace.

Dr. George M. Ragsdale reports the birth of an 11 pound son to Mr. and Mrs. Paul James, northwest of Paris.

Dr. F.A. Barnett, delivered a son to Mr. and Mrs. Herman R. Hendren, near Holliday, March 15. The baby has been named Herman Gene.

Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Berry of Perry are moving to the Fred Utterback farm northwest of Florida. Mrs. Berry is the former Miss Margie Utterback. Her sister, Miss Irene Utterback, will also remain on the home place.

By playing two perfect games in succession, which meant making 24 consecutive strikes, Marvin Chapman, playing on the E.W. Seibert alleys at Paris, Monday, made what probably was an all time record for Northeast Missouri. The scare in each game was 300.

The Powers 4-H Club was organized Saturday, March 16 at the home of the leader, Mrs. Gene Guthrie. Five girls have

joined and were elected to offices as follows: Lockie Gene Guthrie, president; Ella Mae Carey, vice president; Nannie Grace James, secretary; Minta Ruth James, game and song leader; and Betty June Lindsey, reporter.

At the mass meeting at the courthouse Monday evening, William Overfelt was nominated as a candidate for alderman from the Paris first ward, H.P. Noel as candidate from the second ward, and Judge Hurd was nominated for Police Judge. Orval Francis and family have moved from the Francis home place to a farm they recently bought known as the Tredway farm.

50 Years March 25, 1965 At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Paris Rotary Club, Howard Kizer, Paris druggist, was elected president, H.A. Sadler, the vice president, H.G. Warren the treasurer, Paul Gerster, the secretary, E.H. Agnew, Roger Harris, Jim Reinhard, executive committee members.

At the annual meeting of the Paris Progressive Club last Thursday evening, Robert (Bob) Sladek, firm member of Harley Electric, was elected president for the coming year, succeeding Attorney Floyd Lawson, whose term expired.

The American Legion Home has come a long way since it was bought by the organization in 1961 and converted into a hall and meeting place from a movie theatre. Just completed this week has been the interior of the large hall with new ceiling, paneled walls and indirect lighting installed. New folding doors leading to the upstairs have replaced the old drapes.

With the filing of J.B. Jones of east of Paris last week, there are five contestants in the race for the two places on the Board of Education of Paris R-2 schools. They are Caskie Painter, Frank Mac Snyder, present directors; Jones, Charles Wheaton and Albert Langerud.

City Marshal Al Skinner used his new dog catching net for the first time last Thursday, but not to catch a dog. He was called to the courthouse where a muskrat was swimming in the fish pond. Skinner assisted by Deputy Sheriff Harry Belcher extracted the muskrat with the net and turned it loose in Salt River.

30 Years March 21, 1985 Wayne Hackman, general manager of the Macon Electric Cooperative announced this week that three Paris High School students have been named as finalists in the Macon Electric Cooperative.

They are Chad Vanlandingham, Todd Crabtree and Lesa Davis.

For the 14th straight year, Paris will be represented at the annual FFA State Convention to be held in April. Paris High School FFA advisor Mickey Briscoe received verification that four PHS FFA members will be recommended for the State Farmer Degrees at the state convention to be held April 18-19 in Columbia. They are Tony Francis, Richard Ensor, Lori Perrigo and Brian Meny.

40th District Representative Capitol Report

General Assembly Reaches Session Mid-Point Last week marked the end of the first half of this legislative session. As usual, we were kept busy with committee hearings and many bills being voted on. This week, the legislature will be off for Spring Break.

Here are some highlights of some of the legislation passed in the first two-and-a-half months of session.

These bills were priorities of House members as we worked our way up to Spring Break.

School Bullying (HB 458) House Bill 458 was passed with bi-partisan support and a vote of 121-33. The bill would require our school districts to strengthen their policies against bullying.

Some of the provisions in the bill would require schools to establish a procedure for reporting and investigating acts of bullying as well as adding the definition of “cyberbullying.” We are committed as a legislative body to doing what we can to prevent tragedies from happening.

Voter ID (HJR 1, HB 30) HJR 1 is a proposed constitutional amendment that would enable a voter ID law that requires photo identification. Before it could go into effect, the voters of Missouri would have to approve the measure. HB 30 is a statutory change that would require voters to present a government issued photo ID at the polling place in order to receive a ballot. However, those who are not able to show a valid photo ID may cast a provisional ballot that may later be authenticated by the election authority.

Reforming Missouri’s Welfare System (SB 24) Senate Bill 24 would reform the state’s system of welfare. The bill is designed to restructure the welfare system. The savings would be reinvested in incentives such as childcare, job training, and transportation services. The changes are meant to put an emphasis on getting people back to work. They emphasize the need for welfare benefits to be temporary assistance that helps people in need to return to self-sufficiency and independence.

Education Reform (HB 42) In an effort to give young people a quality education, we passed legislation that will modify our existing school transfer law to give students and parents more choice to where they can go to school.

Current transfer law has caused hardship for schools. Failing districts have to pay the cost associated with students transferring to nearby districts and that schools receiving these kids may not have the adequate classroom space or faculty.

House Bill 42 represents a solution to this pressing problem. A key component of the bill would allow students in failing schools to move to better performing schools in their current district. The goal is to allow kids to stay closer to home while also keeping down transportation expenses. In the event space can’t be found in a good school in the district, students would be allowed to transfer to neighboring districts, attend a charter school, or take advantage of a virtual school option.

Unemployment Reform (HB 150) House Bill 150 is designed to make sure the state has enough money in its unemployment trust fund so that businesses don’t have to pay a penalty. Specifically, it would increase the minimum amount of money in the fund before employers’ contribution rates decrease. For example, Missouri businesses would see their contribution rates decrease by 12 percent if the fund has a balance greater than $870 million. The bill also ties unemployment benefits to the average unemployment rate so that more benefits are available when unemployment is high.

Safety Standards for Clinics that Provide Abortions (HB 190) House Bill 190 simply says that facilities that provide abortions must be inspected no less than once per year.

Mark Twain Lake to host their 33rd Annual Antique Show and Sale Members of Xi Beta Xi are busy again this year preparing for the large crowds that will stream into Paris for the annual antique show held at the Paris High School this Saturday March 28.

The doors will open at 9 a.m., for an admission fee $5.00. The dealers traveling from a three state area will display an enormous variety of quality antiques in the gym and hallway of the school. Many dealers will be returning again, to the pleasure of the many repeat buyers that patronize the show each year.

The show features such a wide variety of items that there is surely some treasure there to please everyone.

This year the show will feature some new dealers that have never displayed at the show, bringing some quality items sure to please the hardest to

please buyers. Returning to display at the show this year will be Carl and Jeannie Lawrence from Moberly. Most antique shoppers in the area are familiar with the quality of antiques that they sell. They along with Alice Baker were exhibitors at the very first show the chapter ever held. That year the show only had 17 dealers, which has continue to expand as the years go by. Another dealer displaying this year will be Darlene Lesicko Antiques from Waterloo, Ill. Darlene is familiar with Paris since she was a personal friend and a dealer that helped Elizabeth Evans gather the wonderful collection of antiques that she owned.

C-3 School board hires new principal - Shane Stocks The Madison C-3 Board of Education met in special session at 5 p.m., on Monday, March 9, for the purpose of personnel matters. After a brief open session, the Board closed the meeting pursuant to RSMO 610.021 (3)(13) to conduct interviews for the K-12 Principal’s position and to act on other personnel matters. During closed session, the Board accepted the resignation of Marti Thomas effective March 20 and approved hiring Debra Stokes as assistant cook. The special meeting adjourned at 8:56 p.m.

The Madison C-3 Board of Education met in regular session at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, March 11, in the Superintendent’s office. Approval was given to the agenda and consent agenda items. Consent agenda items included the regular meeting minutes of February 11, 2015, fund balance transfers, the February 2015 treasurer’s report and authorization for payment of invoices.

The Principal’s Report containing enrollment, attendance and discipline data was presented by Trisch Vessar. During the Superintendent’s report, Lesa Rapert discussed legislative issues, building & grounds, transportation and other correspondence. During this time, the Board and administration recognized outgoing member Derek Wood for his service to the education of Madison youth by presenting him with a plaque.

In new business, approval was given to post bids for the food service program and for an additional chaperone on the senior trip. In unfinished business, the preschool feasibility study was presented. The Board voted that due to financial reasons the preschool certified teaching position

will be changed to a 60 credit hour position for the 2015-16 school year.

Mowing bids were opened and approval was given to accept the bid submitted by JCG Mowing LLC. Group health insurance plan options were presented and two plans were accepted.

In other action, approval was given to the 2015-16 salary schedule and the 2015-16 academic calendar.

The Board suspended regular session and entered into executive session pursuant to RSMO 610.021 (2)(3)(13)(1)(6) (18) at 7:58 p.m., and reentered regular session at

10:33 p.m. During closed session, 2015-16 teaching contracts and extra duty contracts were acted on and an 11 month 2015-16 Principal’s contract was offered to Shane Stocks.

The meeting adjourned at 10:34 p.m.

The Spring Fashion Tea Party planned for May 2 at the

Madison Community Center was discussed.

The menu was planned with chicken salad/dollar rolls, fruit cup, cookie and tea and pink lemonade.

There will be door prizes.

Karolyn Thomas won the traveling prize, and Karen Brammer and Linda Breid won the hostess gifts. The next meeting which will be the “Birthday Bash” will be held at the Madison Tavern at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, April 7.

The Paris Board of Aldermen Meeting met in regular session on Tuesday, March 10.

Public Comments none.

Monroe County Deputy Sheriff Sue Walker passed out the number of logged officer hours that were performed for the City of Paris. Deputy Sheriff Walker then answered questions from the board members.

The minutes for February 3, were approved unanimously.

Elizabeth Williams and Carolyn Love were reappointed to serve on the Enhanced Enterprise Zone board. This is a five year term.

The Paris National Bank was awarded the bid on the Permanent Care Investment.

proved to be added to the City bank accounts.

The Public Hearing and Special Meeting to amend the 2014-2015 Budget and to approve the 2015/2016 Budget was scheduled for March 31, at 7 p.m.

The bills and financial reports for the month of March were approved to be paid and approved respectively unanimously.

City Superintendent, Phillip Shatzer reported on the activities of each department. Mike Roberts plans to start the demolition March 16, on Floyd Lawson’s building.

The city is waiting for the Visu-Sewer to schedule when they will televise and clean three sewers.

The gas line was installed for the new back-up generator at the shop.

The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.

The Paris Concert Band received a 1 rating, making this the first Paris large ensemble to receive such a rating at any festival since 2001.

Paris R-II Band and Choir Highlights Over the last few weeks, music students from Paris High School have participated in a number of music festivals.

These festivals provide students and groups who participate with an opportunity to perform publicly and to receive feedback from judges in the form of suggestions for improvement and, finally, a numerical rating from 1 (the best, indicating an “exemplary” performance) to 5 (an “ineffective” performance).

On Friday, February 27, the Paris Concert Band performed at the Central Methodist University Music Festival in Fayette.

The band’s selections were “Avenger” by Rob Grice and “All the Pretty Little Horses” arranged by Anne McGinty. All three judges gave the band a 1 rating,

came on stage to give some performance tips to the students.

On Saturday, March 21, the MSHSAA District Solo and Small Ensemble Festival was held at Mexico High School. A Vocal Trio of Katie Otto, Rachel Batsell, and Autumn Taylor performed “Early One Morning” by Joyce Eilers and “The Poet Sings” by Z. Randall Stroope, receiving an “Outstanding” 2 rating.

Katie Otto also performed Clarinet and Vocal solos.

Her Clarinet solo, “Nocturne” by Theodor Verhey, received a 2 rating.

Her vocal performance, which included “Caro Mio Ben” by Giuseppe Giordani and “Morning”

by Oley Speaks, received a 1 rating, advancing her to the State Music Festival on April 30.

The Music Department is now hard at work preparing their Spring Concert, which will be held on Wednesday, May 6, at 7 p.m., in the High School Gym.

CHURCH NEWS

On Sunday, March 22, services at Holliday Christian Church were opened with the prelude by organist, Jane Akers. All were welcomed by Reverend David Holmes.

Reverend Holmes asked each one to close their eyes and reflect on the word sanctuary – as Jesus is our own personal sanctuary. He then extinguished another Lenten candle - leaving only the final candle lighted to symbolize the immediacy of Jesus’ crucifixion.

The group of volunteers from Holliday and Madison churches packed Cheez-Its and other crackers at the Central Missouri Food Bank on March 21. Easter breakfast will be held at Holliday Christian Church following the 7:30 a.m., services on April 5, (Easter Sunday).

Happy birthday was sung to Cade McMorris. The opening hymn, “Come, Thou Almighty King”, was followed by pastoral prayer and Gloria Patri.

Prayer concerns were expressed for: Gerald and Carole Roberts, Marjorie Wood, Bill Deck and Naomi Curtright. Sympathy was extended to the family of Kenny Little.

The prayer hymn, “Tis the Blessed Hour of Prayer”, was sung; pastoral prayer and unison recital of the Lord’s Prayer followed.

The communion hymn, “In the Garden” was sung.

During the final verse, elders Jerry Ragsdale and Gary Wilson went forward to serve along with deacons, Darold Thrasher and Johnny Ragsdale. The doxology followed sharing of communion and offerings as the communion service closed.

Reverend Holmes’ message referenced scripture from Jeremiah 31:31-34 and John 12:20-33 and was entitled, “Refurbish Your Compass”. Ethics, morals, conscience …. God-given in a host of ways shaping us into the person we are. Studies show that a person’s conscience is formed at a very early age. Conscience was also likened to a moral compass – designed by God to take moral readings. Our compass is used as guidance BUT that compass can malfunction and need to be refurbished (recalibrated) and that can be accomplished through God’s guidance.

The closing hymn, “Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us”, was followed by prayer and singing of “The Spirit Song” to close morning worship.

Following services, a time of fellowship and refreshments was enjoyed. From “365 Things God Wants Us to Know”, Ann Ragsdale read “Jesus is the Good Shepherd”. Jim McMorris then led the group in prayer and in study and discussion of Romans 8:1-8.

Paris Christian Church hosted the quarterly hymn sing on Sunday evening with about 60 people in attendance. Special music was performed by groups from Paris and Madison churches; Susan Sharp from Santa Fe Christian and, in addition, Holliday’s own Jane Akers performed a beautiful piano solo followed by a duet with Judy Harmon playing the dulcimer. The grand finale was a bell performance with many of the gathering included. The attendance banner was awarded to Holliday Christian Church.

Services begin at 9:30 a.m., each Sunday at Holliday Christian Church, followed by Bible Study at 10:30 a.m.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

On March 22 church services began with the pastor giving an opening prayer. Regular church activities of the week were announced and all were encouraged to attend. Announcements included: we are close to reaching the Annie Armstrong goal, March 28 at 1 p.m., will be Easter visitation at Miller’s Residential, and there will be Sunrise Service on Easter at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast at 8:30 a.m.

The message this week was titled ‘Jesus Alone Give Eternal Life’ and comes from John 5:24-30. When Jesus says ‘truly, truly’ you should listen to Him closely.

Don’t stare off into space wondering what is for lunch after service. What Jesus is about to say is important.

Everything Jesus says is important. Jesus says you must hear His voice to enter eternal life with God. Your pastor, song leader, favorite author, or TV evangelist does not have the voice of Jesus. Only Jesus has the voice of Jesus; a person must hear Jesus personally.

To hear Jesus one cannot compromise on what Jesus says. What to argue with Jesus about His truth?

Then you worship the Jesus of your imagination, not the Jesus of the Bible. Your imagination will not get you to heaven. Many in the church today think they have a right to argue with Jesus about what is right and wrong. Read Matthew 7:13-14 and see how narrow Jesus’ Gospel is. If you cannot accept Jesus’ truth then you cannot accept Him. Jesus says the Father has given Him two testimonies about Jesus’ divine nature. Today we look at resurrection. There is a spiritual resurrection now that is received by each person who hears and properly responds to the voice of Jesus. This brings that person from eternal death to eternal life in Christ or as we call it today, salvation. Only those needing life today can receive this resurrection. Jesus explains who will hear His voice in Matthew 5 when He explains the attitudes of the Beatitudes. These are God given attitudes, not natural man’s attitudes.

Jesus does not get into the timing of the future resurrection, just the fact it will happen. One day all people will rise to be judged when they hear the sound of the voice of Jesus Christ. When Jesus returns it will be time for judgment. The time to accept God’s love, grace, and mercy is in this life, right now.

Those who have received the earlier spiritual resurrection will rise to eternal life with God and those who have not will rise to eternal judgment of Christ.

Jesus says that your deeds on earth will prove the truth about your life. Deeds do not save a person but they do reveal the person’s heart. Unsaved man cannot do the righteous (good) deeds of God. Can Jesus change His mind in the end and accept all to heaven with Him? The love of Jesus would want to say ‘yes’ but there is also the holiness of the Father to be satisfied. Jesus’ judgment is only in the Father’s will so Jesus cannot change the Gospel at the end to receive those who rejected His love in this life. Know the Father loves you and sent His Son as the payment for your sins. Do you hear the voice of Jesus today? If you do accept His words and come to Jesus in faith to receive today’s spiritual resurrection.

“Who Are You?” was the title of Pastor Kenny Sharp’s sermon with scripture taken from 1st Samuel 17:11, 37, 45-47. This was a spiritual question not a common one. We are who we are because of who God has made us to be since He is in charge. Often times we let circumstances control us and determine who we are and how we act. We are not to let these times rule over us. God created us to become overcomers such as Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David and many other Biblical people. We will not become discouraged and dismayed if we give our problems and lives to God. He is our true deliverer!! Jesus came to us with love and forgiveness. Jesus Christ is real!!

Serving at the Lord’s Table were Bob Conley, Bill Miller, Charlie Horstmeier, Don Wilkerson, Fred Omer and Charlie Thomas.

Thank you notes were read from the Nehemiah Touch Ministries, Monroe County Cancer Supporters and Ronald McDonald House for our annual donations. Happy Birthday was sung to Bobbie Wisdom.

Praises and prayer concerns for friends and family members were shared with the congregation as well as traveling mercies for those on the road at this time.

Maddie Baumbaugh was presented with her baptismal certificate and a cross necklace.

The Family Fun Night was held the past Saturday night and was attended by several church members and friends. It was decided to continue to have one again next year. It was just a fun time of playing traveling Bible bingo from the youngest one there to the oldest!

Susan Kendrick announced upcoming events for the Salt Saturday youth group and VBS. The youth group will meet next Saturday to pick up trash along Route D so please be sure to wear good shoes, gloves, etc. A mission meeting will be held following the trash pickup. The youth group also decided a mission this year would be to collect quarters which will be sent to help those less fortunate. She is in need of teachers and helpers for VBS, so please contact her if you are able to assist during the week of May 25 - 29. It will be held from 6-8 p.m., each night.

Easter services will be Good Friday service on April 3, at 7 p.m., sunrise service at Buzzard’s Roost at 7 a.m., carry in breakfast in the fellowship hall at 8 a.m., Sunday school at 9:30 a.m., worship at 10:30 a.m. An egg hunt will be provided for the children between Sunday school and worship service.

Since it is the fifth Sunday next week, the Innovations group will be providing the worship music.

Bible study is held every Wed night at 6:30 p.m., (carry in meal at 6 p.m.). Sunday School is every Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:30 a.m. Please come and join us!

The First Christian Church welcomes everyone to enjoy an Easter Cantata for worship at 10:45 a.m. next Sunday, March 29, followed by a carry-in dinner.

Worship was held on Sunday, March 22, with Reverend Donna Scott officiating. Her Morning Message, “True Humility,” was based on Philippians 2:5-11. Tammy Elliott and Emily Perry joined membership with the church and were baptized into the faith by Pastor Scott during the service. Pastor Scott gave a Children’s Message on imitating Christ. Hymns were: “Morning Has Broken,” “Because He Lives,” “Beneath the Cross of Jesus” “Breathe on Me,” and “Sweet, Sweet Spirit.”

Participants in the service were: Worship Leader Jim Scott; Elders Larry Castleman and Hazel Herron; Diaconate Steve Hancock, Charles McGinness, Bill McKinney, and Bob Mitchell; Acolytes Katelyn McGinness and Connor Eckman; Song Leader Mary Beth Mitchell; and Organist Mary Jo Wilson. The church hosted the Hymn Sing at 6:30 p.m.

Services were held at Madison Christian Church on Sunday March 22. Rev. Holmes greeted the congregation and led the announcements.

Joys and concerns were expressed before Rev. Holmes led the congregation in prayer, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The Adult Choir sang “ Sweeter As the Days Go By” for the special music. The Lords’ Supper was observed and tithes and offerings were given.

Rev. Holmes delivered the morning message, “Jeremiah 31:31-34 and John 12:20-23. All were invited to Christian Discipleship. Announcements: Adult Choir will practice at 6:30 p.m., March 25, April 2, the elders will meet at 6 p.m., and will be followed by the monthly meeting of the Official Board at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2 the Maundy Thursday services will be held at the church beginning at 7 p.m., with this being a reenactment of the Last Supper and will be portrayed by the men from the Madison and Holliday Churches.

We were blessed to have four baptisms this morning - Briley Hancock, Morgan Rush, Anna Stahlschmidt and Anna Washburn. John Mitchell gave the invocation after a prelude by Kathy Miller.

The choir presented special music, “Open Up the Heavens”, directed by Cheryl Gholson. The children sang and signed the song, “He is Risen”. Lindsey and DeDee Mitchell led children’s church- K-3rd grade. Brenda Ensor served as pianist.

Reverend Wesley Hammond’s sermon was titled “The Church God Blesses”, from Acts 2:41-47. After receiving the Holy Spirit and following baptism, the people devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching and fellowship. The apostles taught the gospel which was centered on Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection.

God’s blessing is a gift which changes a person, making them happy and peaceful. Receiving God’s blessing does not guarantee a life without problems. We must put ourselves in a position to be blessed; we should not reflect despair in our life and be distracted by daily woes around us.

We should reflect to others God’s peace and forgiveness.

Mark Bell gave the children’s sermon. He showed a picture of his children playing. He explained it was good to get along but if they said mean words, this might tear apart their relationship. It is sometimes hard to repair broken relationships even when we say we are sorry, because we cannot take back the unkind words. Proverbs 16:24 says, “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and health to the body.”

The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service March 22. The ushers for this weeks service were Bob McKinney and Albert Sinkclear. Patti Grimmett led the congregation into worship service with, “There Is a Redeemer/When I Survey.” Pastor John Grimmett led the call to worship based on Psalm 51. Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns and celebrations. He led the congregation in a prayer of confession from John 12:20-33 and The Lords Prayer. The special music piece was, “Three Men on a Mountain.” The special music piece was performed by the John Grimmett.

The scripture reading was from John 12:23-36. Pastor John Grimmett delivered the message, “The Lamb of the Light. The closing hymn was, “Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley.” Patti Grimmett led the congregation out of worship service with, “Rock of Ages.”

The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold worship service next Sunday, March 29. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:45 a.m. A sitter is provided during worship service for any children.

Services Sunday, March 22 began with Patti Grimmett playing “Were You There”, followed by Pastor John Grimmett leading in prayer for Bill Wright; Bob Gash; Bryan Carey; Peggy Routt and daughter, Tish; Nicole Johnson; The Tinker’s new granddaughter, Romi Izabella Jennings; and a hurting world, with all saying the Prayer Of Confession, the Responsive Reading from Psalm 51 and saying the Lord’s Prayer.

Debbie Carey led in song to “Oh, How I Love Jesus”, “Wounded for Me”, “Near the Cross” and “Threefold Amen”.

Pastor John played guitar and sang a very touching song “3 Men On a Mountain”.

The Message “The Lamb and The Light” was based on scripture from John 12:23-36 as Jesus arrived for the last time to Jerusalem before He was crucified on a cross between two sinners. One a selfish man and one a criminal; as the one man asked Jesus to “remember me Lord” and He told him that he would surely be with Him in paradise, a sinner found the Lamb and the light at Calvary. Walk while you have the light and follow Me! As the symbol of baptism means rising from the water to a new life - be willing to lay down your life for Jesus.

Before the foundation was laid for earth - God had a plan for salvation - His Son Jesus Christ, He wants to take you and me to the cross. If you have Jesus you will go to the light of Gods love... It will be only a matter of time until Christ will rise on Easter morning... It is time to live in the light of Jesus. Go to the Cross with Jesus!

Jesus’ last week was filled with both celebration and defeat, much like our lives. This Sunday, March 29, Granville Church will celebrate Jesus’ triumphant arrival in Jerusalem on the Sunday before his death. Then, we invite all ages to follow Jesus from the upper room to the cross on Maundy Thursday, April 2. The candlelight service will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature voices from biblical characters who shared a common thread of recognizing Christ in the events of Thursday night and Good Friday. As Jesus draws nearer to death the candles are extinguished and the room grows darker until we leave in darkness and silence.

A scrapbooking day will be held to benefit Relay for Life April 11 at Paris High School. Contact Melinda James for more information. A craft show will be held May 23 at the Madison Community Center to benefit Relay. This is the same day as the all-town garage sale.

The Seder Meal is a way to tell the story of Exodus to the future generations. This communal meal is a time of celebrating and remembering the deliverance of the Hebrew people from Egyptian slavery by the hand of God. The story of Exodus is told through the use of scripture and symbolic food. The Seder Meal is a critical part of the Jewish Passover. It was the Seder Meal that Jesus ate at the Last Supper. During the Last Supper Jesus instituted the Eucharist and becomes evident at the end of the Meal. It allows all Christians to see their connections to the Jewish faith through Jesus. Please plan to join us for this unique learning and worship experience.

Monroe County Gardeners Plan Trip to Amish Country The Monroe County Gardeners met March 9 at the Paris Library with Nancy Crain as hostess.

Nancy conducted the business meeting. It was voted to change the meeting date to the second Tuesday of each month and to have it during the day.

We are happy to welcome two new members to our group Vicky and Paul Jordan.

The same officers were retained for another year.

By requiring at Preschool registration for 3 and 4 year olds begins at 8 a.m., Friday, April 10, at the Paris Elementary Office. (Elementary doors will be open at 7:35 a.m.) Your child must turn three or four years old by July 31, 2015 and be potty trained to attend preschool. You will need to provide a copy of your child’s birth certificate, social security card & immunization record. All original documents can be copied at school on the day of registration, if needed.

Preschool registration packets may be picked up at the elementary office any time after April 1st. All completed paperwork will not be accepted until the day of registration.

If your child is currently enrolled in preschool and you have returned your registration form, your child is already registered for next year.

The morning class (7:50 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.) will be for four year olds that will be attending kindergarten during the 2016/2017 school year and the afternoon class (12 p.m. to 3:05 p.m.) will be for three year olds. If the morning

preschool class becomes full, any additional 4 year olds will be in the afternoon class.

Children attending the morning class have the opportunity to eat breakfast at school, which begins at 7:35 a.m. Children attending the afternoon class have the opportunity to eat lunch at school, which begins at 11:40 a.m., (parents must remain with their child while they eat). Transportation is not provided by the school district for preschool students.

Currently the cost for preschool is $30.00 a week, regardless of absenteeism.

Parents may qualify for a reduced price of $10.00 a week or free attendance.

The Free and Reduced forms will be available at the beginning of the 2015/2016 school year.

Students will be officially enrolled when all registration paperwork, copies of immunization record, social security card and birth certificate are submitted.

Bryce Ensor named to Lindenwood Dean’s List, named Linden Leader

In recognition of his outstanding academic achievement during the 2014 Fall Semester, Bryce Ensor was inscribed on the Dean’s Honor Roll at Lindenwood University.

In order to be recognized for this honor, you must be a full-time, undergraduate student who has achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Lindenwood is a fouryear liberal arts institution dedicated to excellence in higher education located in St. Charles.

Bryce is a 2014 graduate of Paris High School and is majoring in Athletic Training while attending Lindenwood University.

Bryce Ensor has been selected as a Linden Leader recipient at Lindenwood University for the 2014-2015 school year.

The Work and Learn program is a valuable source of student leadership and work skill development. Students that are nominated for this award are recognized for their job performance, academic proficiency, and campus presence.

Pay Increase Rejection (HCR 3, HCR 4) Two key votes early this session were those taken on House Concurrent Resolutions 3 and 4. Members came together in bipartisan fashion to reject a proposed pay increase for elected officials. The result was a rejection of the proposed salary increases for lawmakers and statewide office holders recommended by the Citizens’ Commission on Compensation for Elected Officials. I want to applaud my colleagues in both chambers for joining me in voting against the proposal. It would be a misuse of your tax dollars.

Amending County Budgets (HB 401) House Bill 401 removes the sunset provisions regarding decreasing county budgets. If passed, counties would be able to adjust their budgets two times a year if funds were to decline by two percent or more.

Transportation Funding Something high on the agenda when we return next week will be House Bill 995 and Senate Bill 540. The bills address highway and transportation funding and a possible gas tax. The tax increase would be phased in over three years at a rate of two cents a year. It is vital to look at the proposal and determine if we want to raise the gas sales tax to fund construction on roads and bridges. If passed, the bills would help get matching funds from the federal government. Every dollar that the state spends on transportation is matched by four dollars in federal funds.

District Events I had the chance to serve meals on wheels at the senior center in Paris, Mo., on Friday, March 20.

I was glad to present a House resolution to Mitch Ulrich for earning the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 177 in Bowling Green, Mo., on Saturday, March 21.

I enjoyed touring the Pike County Developmental Disabilities agency during an open house visit on Monday, March 23.

I will also be speaking at Rotary Club in Paris, Mo., at noon on Thursday, March 26.

House Bill 1027 Finally, I will be introducing legislation on Tuesday, March 31, after returning from break. House Bill 1027 will be presented at 8 am to the Committee on Energy and Environment. The bill deals with private companies claiming eminent domain.

There will be no Capitol Report for this coming week due to Spring Break.

COMMUNITY NEWS MARJORIE A. WOOD 1932-2015

Marjorie A. Wood, 82 of Paris, passed away at the home of her daughter Darby in Quakertown, Pa., where she has resided since October 2014 sharing her time between homes of her twin daughters Debbie and Darby.

Marjorie was born on December 4, 1932 to Roy and Mary Hartegan Stowers in Mexico. On November 10, 1963 she married Robert L. Wood.

He preceded her in death on April 30, 2008.

She is survived by one son Randy (Toni) Monsen of Mexico, and three daughters Debbie (Norm) Fecteau, Darby (Ed) Dallatore of Quakertown, Pa., and Mary (Susie) Little of Paris; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer (Steve) Smith of Pottsboro, Texas, Alicia (Jason) Rupert, Chuck (Krystal) Dowell of Whitesboro, Texas, Joshua Duncan, Paris, Amy Fanini, of Doylestown, Pa. Jared Monsen, Mexico, Nikki (Scott) Beauchamp Vomund, Martinsburg, Blade Wood of Bell, Kurtis Little, Shelbina, and Katie (Zac) Baker of Paris. and 19 great-grandchildren and one great-greatgranddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother LeRoy Stowers and son, David L Wood.

Marjorie lived in Mexico, after graduating from high school she worked for the Mexico Ledger before starting her family. In 1972 she and Robert moved to Paris, where Marjorie worked for Baker Lumber until retirement. After retirement Marjorie continued to work and

help out in various offices at the Monroe County Courthouse where most of her time was spent in the collector’s office during the tax season. She enjoyed watching and going to St. Louis Cardinals ballgames. She and Robert enjoyed dancing and attended dances regularly at the American Legion Hall in Paris.

She had a passion for shopping and enjoyed going as often as possible. She had the opportunity to spend a lot of quality time with Macey Shatzer and Myles Baker her great-grandchildren of Paris who she looked forward to seeing daily while in Paris. Once she came out to Pennsylvania she relied on the technology of Face Time to see what she called her babies. Marjorie was a member of Presbyterian Church, in Mexico, and also attended church at the Methodist Church, of Paris.

Visitation will be Friday, March 27, from 5 to 7 at the Agnew Funeral Home. Services will be Saturday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the Agnew Funeral Home with Reverend Donna Scott officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Paris.

CATHY ELLIS 1943-2015

Anna Catherine Ellis, age 71, of Atlanta, died peacefully with her beloved daughter, Johanna, by her side, on March 16, 2015 after a courageous battle with stage IV lung cancer. She is survived by her daughter, Johanna Wynn Ellis; her brother John William Ellis V and wife Carol Ellis; her niece Casey Ellis Frames; nephews David Michael Ellis and John William Ellis VI; brother Charles Stanley Ellis; and her beloved Brussels Griffons, Mojo, Tinkerbell, and Sasha. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Jane Ellis.

Cathy was a prominent business woman, a loving mother, a loyal friend and compassionate sister.

Born in Mexico, Cathy grew up in Jacksonville, Ill., and later moved to Arizona where she graduated from boarding school in Scottsdale.

Four years later, after completing her time at The University of Arizona, in Tucson, she and a sorority sister headed to San Francisco to enter the working world.

There, Cathy pursued mortgage banking and real estate, and for several years, bought and sold houses for a living.

Cathy always enjoyed working hard but also enjoyed celebrating life in its many forms. She was an avid sailor during her time in San Francisco and could occasionally be found at the card tables.

It was at that point that she again decided to pursue her dream career in the automotive industry.

She moved to Peoria, Ill., to pursue an opportunity with the family business at their Volkswagen dealership, learning everything from the ground up- what Cathy called her “masters degree in the car business.”

In 1988, at the encouragement of her father, Cathy left Peoria for Atlanta to assume the position of General Manager of Atlanta Classic Cars, Inc., the family’s second Atlanta Mercedes-Benz dealership. Two years later, after cancer took her father’s life, she took full ownership becoming President and Dealer Principle of Atlanta Classic Cars. Cathy grew her business to become one of the top women owned and operated dealerships in the nation. She was the first woman elected to the Mercedes-Benz

National Dealer Council and chaired their PreOwned Council. Cathy always attributed her success to her employees, many of whom call her “mom” to this day.

Cathy’s interests extended well beyond the dealership into the community that supported her business. Besides contributing to causes for which she had a personal affinity, she found ways to give back to her community through sponsorships of the arts and healthcare. Cathy also served on the Small Business Advisory Council for the Federal Reserve Bank and the Board of Advisors for The Carter Center. Cathy was most proud that her daughter had followed in her trailblazing footsteps, preserving the legacy.

Funeral services were held in Atlanta, G., on Thursday, March 19, at 2:30 p.m., at H.M. Patterson & Son Funeral Home-Spring Hill Chapel. Burial was held on Monday, March 23 at 2 p.m., at Berea Cemetery north of Mexico.

The evening began with a welcome by Alpha Phi President Renee Tawney and a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by Destiny Arnett.

“We would like to thank each of you for coming out tonight to support all these confident, young ladies,” said Sorority President Renee Tawney.

First runner-up for Miss Paris was Riley Barton while second runnerup was Taylor Gruber. Riley Barton took home the Miss Congeniality award and Autumn Taylor won the high-ticket sales prize.

The Ola Mae Ball Life Learning and Friendship Award winner was Micayla Hagenhoff.

Crowning the new Miss Paris was 2014 Miss Paris Brooke Rentschler, daughter of Lee and Ali Rentschler.

“Being Miss Paris was an experience I will never forget,” said 2014 Miss Paris Brooke Rentschler.

“I would like to thank God for this opportunity, and the Alpha Phi Sorority for putting on this great pageant every year.”

2015 Miss Paris contestants included Kaylee Brown, age 16, daughter of Doug and Melissa Graupman; Autumn Taylor, age 18, daughter of Johnny and Terry Taylor; Micayla Hagenhoff, age 19, daughter of Chanda Blades and Brian Hagenhoff; Taylor Gruber, age 16, daughter of DeeDee Minks and Billy Gruber; and Riley Barton, age 15, daughter of Eddie and Julie Barton.

Aly Francis captured the Jr. Miss Paris title and was crowned by 2014 Jr. Miss Paris, Meagan Brown, daughter of Doug and Melissa Graupman.

Josie Rentschler took home first runner-up honors and Shannon Pugh was named second runner-up. Brie Ensor was named Miss Congeniality for her helpfulness to the other candidates and Aly Francis was high in ticket sales. The Ola Mae Ball Life Learning and Friendship Award winner was Angelica Braithwaite.

Also appearing on the program as entertainment for the evening, and greatly appreciated by the crowd were the Paris Nightingale Taylor Ross, who did two outstanding musical numbers; Destiny Arnett, who performed the National Anthem another well received song; and the Mid-Mo Kats who did two very crowd favorite dance performances.

NOTICES NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING The City of Paris will hold a public hearing regarding substantive changes to Chapter 405 of the City of Paris Zoning Regulations as required by Sections 89.050 and 89.060, RSMo. After a short summation by both sides where Defense Attorney McConnell noted that, “the state has not provided evidence and all charges should be dismissed,” Judge Mobley ruled that there was indeed probable cause and bound Lage over to the 10th Circuit Court for arraignment on Thursday, April 2, at 10 a.m. Lage remains confined in the Pike County Jail and his $1,000,000 bond contin-

ued.

The second defendant in the case, Jessica Munoz, 28, Moberly, is charged with second-degree murder (A Felony), and two other felony charges - armed criminal action and hindering prosecution of a felony. Munoz has received a change of venue and will be tried in Audrain County. She has a scheduled hearing on Monday, April 6, at 9 a.m.

Any indication of an arrest and charges filed does not mean the individual or individuals identified has been convicted of a crime.

All persons arrested are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

CITY OF PARIS BRUSH & YARD WASTE POLICY

1- Citywide curbside brush & yard waste pick-up will be conducted on the 1st & 3rd Friday of each month. Please have all brush & yard waste at the curb by 7:00 am.

2- All brush & yard waste will need to be placed next to the curb at the street in an accessible location.

3- Brush larger than 9” in diameter or 8’ in length will not be accepted.

4- Grass, weeds, & other vegetation will need to be placed in heavy duty boxes or bags. ONLY YARD WASTE WILL BE ACCEPTED. 5- Upon *special request curbside pick-up may be available on other dates or locations.

6- Brush pick-up will be available for projects which utilize commercial tree trimming firms or are not performed by the property owner. This service will be provided only upon *special request made a minimum of 48 hours in advance. The fee for this service will be Forty Dollars ($40.00) per hour based on 1/2 hour increments.

Geraldine Marie Cain 1918-2015

Gerry’s earthly journey ended peacefully in her sleep at Miller’s Resident Care where she lived the final six years of her life. Thank you to all who cared for her and kept her safe.

Geraldine was the daughter of Maggie (Howell) & Vern Jones; she was raised in Holliday, with her brother and sister, Clyde Jones and Wanda Lou White. She lived her early life on a farm and rode her pony “Beauty” to grade school; she graduated from Holliday High School and was an avid basketball player.

The summer of her senior year she worked at a picture frame factory in Kansas City to pay for her school books. After graduating high school, she was employed for Batsell’s Dry Goods Store and helped her brother at Jonesy’s Ice Cream Parlor in Paris.

In April of 1940 she married Russell Cain, a loving marriage that lasted just short of 60 years when her husband passed from Parkinson’s Disease.

Rus & Gerry lived their early marriage in San Diego; they had two daughters, Sheila and Sandra.

They were living in San Diego at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and she spoke often of standing on shore waving good-bye to the ships loaded with young sailors heading overseas. Russell worked for Consolidated Aircraft as an electrician during the war effort.

They returned to Missouri in 1947 and raised their daughters in Paris where she worked alongside her husband and other family members at Cain Brother’s Grocery Store. After the closing of the store, she found her passion working as an assistant with Dr. Schlager in his medical office. She spent over 18 years working for two factories in Paris - National Garment and Gates Factory as a quality control supervisor.

Gerry and Rus loved dancing to Big Band music, large family dinners, traveling overseas to visit their daughter Sheila, visits with grandchildren and card games with their friends. She enjoyed canning the fresh vegetables they raised and working in her beautiful rose garden consisting of over thirty rose bushes. But most of all, they loved their quiet times together.

The meeting gave the commissioners a chance to inform Sen. Riddle on the concerns the commissioners had and allow them to voice their suggested legislation opinions.

The First Christian Church was a large part of her life in Paris; she was the oldest female member at the time of her death. For many years, she taught the 3rd grade Sunday School class and was a positive influence on numerous young lives.

She was very active in the Church and chaired the 150th anniversary in 1983. Gerry was a good friend to many people and had a loving caring heart.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Paris Christian Church to go towards Bibles for the youth, Scholarships for summer camp, the Senior Life Line Program and the Elders Fund.

Geraldine is preceded in death by her parents, her wonderful husband Russell Cain, her daughter Sheila Ann Blakemore, granddaughter Tamera Lea Blakemore and her brother Clyde Jones.

Surviving is her daughter Sandra Sue Konovalske; her grandchildren: Dwayne and Greg Blakemore, David Evans and Leanne Klamm; and seven great-grandchildren: Courtney and Sidney Szczygiel, Seth and Savannah Evans; Mikah Blakemore, Bradley and Marissa Blakemore; her sister Wanda White, nieces and nephews, Phil and Sally, Blakemore and many more friends.

Services will be held at the Agnew Funeral Home on Palm Sunday, March 29.

Visitation 11 a.m., followed by services at 2 p.m. Burial at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
