COUNTRY HOMEMAKERS MEET AT SENIOR CENTER

The Country Homemakers met at the Paris Senior Center for the December meeting, with Margaret Wilkerson as hostess. Roll call (A Dream Christmas Gift) was answered by members.

The minutes and treasurers report was approved as read.

Club books were passed out.

Members drew for secret pals for 2014. It was decided to get our Sunshine pal at the Monroe Manor a gift.

Shirley Ensor announced an OATS trip to Keokuk, Iowa, on Dec. 11.

Marguerite Jones said she had finally been able to give a quilt to the Summers family for their loss in a fire.

Lois Spencer held an Installation Ceremony for the 2014 Officers.

Margaret Wilkerson led the group in a couple of Christmas Carols. Lois Spencer had a game. Louise Armstrong won the game and Mary Mallory won the hostess gift.

Phyllis told the story about the pickle on the Christmas Tree. Sunshine pal gifts were opened.

The next meeting will be that Lois Spencer’s home at 10:30 a.m., with a soup luncheon. Members are to bring sandwiches or dessert.

A White Elephant Sale will be held with the proceeds to go to the Strive for Success Award given to a deserving Paris High Senior.

Gerry Hodge, Veterans Service Officer, Missouri Veterans Commission, will be available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, 310 E. Sign-ups continue for positions for many local boards and councils It is that time of year again. The time to start filing for available positions on local boards and councils. The filing dates for the April 8, 2014 municipal election will end on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014. The election will fill vacant seats on local, city and miscellaneous boards

and councils.

Local positions include: The Paris Board of Education has three openings – the seats of now serving board members Jamie Ebbesmeyer, Erin Gruber and Ted DeOrnellis, who have all filed for office. The positions

have an associated three-year term. Candidates may file their applications with the Superintendent’s Office during normal business hours until the final filing date of Jan. 21, 2014.

NEILS NEEDING DONATED MOBILITY EQUIPMENT

In this season of giving, a local organization is asking area residents to donate mobility equipment that will help disabled individuals live more comfortably.

NorthEast Independent Living Services (NEILS) in Hannibal is in need of shower benches (seats without backs) and shower chairs (seats with backs) at this time.

Those wishing to donate can bring their benches/chairs to the NEILS office at 909 Broadway, Suite 350, or call 573-221-8282 and ask for Keith. Office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. On Friday.

NEILS serves individuals in Clark, Lewis, Marion, Monroe, Pike and Ralls counties.

Christmas Spirit All Year Long

Happy New Year... One and All! It has been quite a year.

There have been many memorable happenings for numerous members of our community family.

I look forward to many more memories with family, friends, neighbors and our newspaper family.

As I look toward 2014 there are going to be a few changes in the Monroe County Appeal.

The cost of postage is rising again, as is ink and paper costs. To offset these changes we are going to have to do something that has not been done in at least the past seven years that I have been here - we are raising subscription prices to reflect our rising costs. The new subscription price will be $27 for in county (Monroe County) subscriptions and $35 for out of county subscriptions. The Internet only subscription will remain the same - $15.

We thought long and hard before making these price changes but feel that we have to continue to be both competitive with our local media market and have the proper revenue to deliver our weekly product to our faithful readers.

As with any business we have to keep an eye on the bottom line and at least keep it in the black/red or not making but not losing revenue.

We will continue to work hard for our readers to deliver a quality price for a reasonable price.

May 2014 be a healthy and prosperous year!

MY TURN

A Little Kindness - Please In this holiday season of good feeling and before we make some resolutions for next year, some quiet reflection is in order. Rather than reciting a wordless sermon to ourselves or beating ourselves up for what we should or could have done better, we could instead focus on how we treat those that we come in contact with every day or even from time to time.

The given in our reflection is that “our homes and our churches are not perfect places but rather places in which we, surely also imperfect, gather and at least treat each other with a kindness that no one has to earn.”

We are not always so good about extending that basic kindness to those we don’t know well, and especially to those whose life style differs from ours or to someone who has a different opinion from ours. Each of us brings to our community a belief system and sometimes very strong social and political preferences.

In the political realm the recent studies of psychologists have concluded that the more extreme a person’s views are, “the more that they think that they are right”. Both hard-lined conservatives and extreme liberals have a strong sense of “belief superiority” with disdain for anyone that doesn’t share their views. This phenomenon of “belief superiority” is precisely why so many partisan politicians, pundits and

personalities in the media are so smugly confident of their viewpoints and dismissive of any opposing views and of those that may hold them.

To the extent that this attitude presents itself in our communities, and neighbors are considered to be enemies because of their opposing political beliefs and opinions. The cooperation in all other areas becomes difficult and the social fabric of our small communities is subject to unnecessary damage.

For my own reminders to avoid having such attitudes about our neighbors I turn to two great philosophers. Voltaire said “Love truth but pardon error”, and again “I have made but one prayer to God, make my enemies ridiculous.”

Making enemies for these political reasons is surely ridiculous.

The other great philosopher Ronald Reagan offered, “Just because I agree with you 80 percent of the time doesn’t mean that we are enemies 20 percent of the time.” A Sunday reading at church provided a yet stronger reminder for those of us that claim to be Christians at Colossians 3-12, “Brothers and sisters: put on as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another.” To which I would add “even if you think they are wrong or at least mistaken”.

Some of us have already taken down our Christmas trees and the lights, put away the Christmas wrapping paper and the Christmas trinkets and some of us did this the night of or the morning after Christmas day. Now I know that the tree, the lights and all that is only a very small part of Christmas but I think it is rather interesting that some of us are so quick to take it down right after all the gifts have been opened and there is nothing left under the tree. I even heard someone say the next morning after Christmas that they were going to take all the decorations down because they were tired of looking at them.

I know-to each his own-and of course everyone has their own way of doing things but I have to stay true to my character and share my thoughts with you. I am not saying there is anything wrong with taking down your decorations because I am one of the biggest believers that Christmas is a lot more

LISA TALTON than trees and lights but it does sadden me when I hear people say,”I am so glad Christmas is over.” I think that people who say that might have been focusing on the wrong things.

I am glad my husband and I decided when we first had children that we were not going to go overboard with buying Christmas gifts. Every Christmas has remained stress free ever since we made that decision. I tell young parents starting out that it is up to them how their children view Christmas and it is up to them what their children will expect every year under the tree. If you start out spending tons of money buying them everything and anything then they will expect it every year and it will get worse as they get older. And how can they think Christmas is about anything else but the presents when that

Mr. and Mrs. Tilden Dooley have opened a combination restaurant and notion shop in Stoutsville. Ed Noonan of Paris, an old hand at the business, will manage it.

C.J. Gerster of Paris received a cablegram from his brother and two sisters in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Sunday.

At the Pine Springs Tavern just north of Paris Saturday night 155 couples gained admis-

sion while 61 couples had to be turned away because there was no room left in the booths and on the dancing floor.

Mrs. Fred A. Thompson gave a candid camera party at Madison Saturday night in honor of Fred’s birthday. Richard Sullins and S.J. Kimbrell operated a studio and did candid work as the guests arrived.

R.L. Gibbs, whose indoor and outdoor dance platforms at Stoutsville rank among the most popular in Northeast Missouri, closed down this week until later in the winter. Several hundred people attended his New Year function.

Harold Littrell and Miss Laura Mary Halley, both of the Long Branch vicinity, were married by Rev. W.E. Reavis at his home.

E.W. Rice, completing his sixth year as a used car dealer and agent for Plymouth and Chrysler found in totaling his sales for those six years that he had sold 1,016 automobiles.

Tom Akers, deputy under Sheriff Russell Wilkes, has been appointed constable of Jackson township succeeding Bill Farrell, who was elected to the office but resigned.

children. When they see us enjoy Christmas and not being stressed about how many gifts we can give without going broke, it makes it easier for them to do the same.

Then they can pass on to their children the true meaning of Christmas. They can not only enjoy celebrating Jesus’ birth but can enjoy being with loved ones and all the many blessings that come along with the Christmas season.

I believe Christmas continues after December 25th. I believe it is a celebration that can last all year long. We might not decorate for it all twelve months but we can definitely carry the Christmas spirit in our hearts every day and let it affect how we treat others all year long.

Christmas is all about giving and why would we want to only do this in December? God gave us the gift of his son Jesus and Jesus offers us the gift of salvation not only on December 25th, but all the other 364 days of the year.

This 2014, I will strive to be thankful every day for these gifts that God has given me, share these gifts with others and continue the Christmas spirit of giving as much as I possibly can.

This Christmas my children once again confirmed it that focusing on the true reason to celebrate was one of the best things my husband and I had ever done.

They listed their three things they wanted with no complaints of getting more. One of my son’s even had a hard time picking three things.

(And I have to add that my children do not get a lot throughout the year either. Most of their clothes are hand-medowns from my sister and I have never heard them complain but instead get excited when she sends a big bag of their cousins clothes.

They could have listed tons of things they wanted but did not have.)

Tom Johnston, who has trapped many beaver this year, brought in one Wednesday morning that weighed 56 pounds, one of the largest seen here.

A fire that was believed to have started on a cedar Christmas tree from faulty Christmas lights extensively damaged the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sharp east of Paris last Thursday, the day after Christmas.

Six Monroe County young men will be in the first group of 1964 to leave for armed forces service on Jan. 14. They are: Don Mason, Cecil Bodine, Larry Buckman, Bernard Hightower, Sidney (Dick) Eckman, all sent by Selective Service as the January draft quota. Joseph Watson, a volunteer.

Miss Arlene Wolfe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wolfe, Sr. of southeast of Paris, and Chester W. Alcorn, son of Mrs. Mabel Alcorn and the late Mr. Alcorn of near Perry, will be married Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Paris by the pastor, Rev. Paul Potter.

The Paris Invitational tournament will open Tuesday night with three games to be played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights and two games on Thursday night.

Paris is seeded first with Salisbury, Harrisburg and Hallsville seeded in that order. Other teams entered are Brunswick, B team of Hickman High

in Columbia, Keytesville and Madison.

30 Years Jan. 5, 1984 Both Rick and Glendia Ayers have joined the U.S. Postal Department and this week the couple moved to Macon. Rick Ayers, 24, son of Boonville Postmaster Richard Ayers, will be employed at Unionville while his wife is assigned to the Macon Post Office.

Anyone knowing Richard Barnett when he was a kid in Monroe County would not be surprised to learn he grew up to be a medical doctor. The son of Dr. and Mrs. F.A. Barnett, Paris, Richard grew up following his father around on house calls. He was at his father’s side so much, people called him “Little Doc”. Dr. Richard Barnett and his wife, the former Carol Ann Willenbrink, were back in town this week visiting their parents. The couple live in Shreveport, Louisiana, where Dr. Barnett has an ongoing cardiology practice.

Two Paris television retailers are quickly becoming area leaders in the marketing of television accessories. This week both businesses are introducing rental VCR tapes.

Glen Morgan, Glen’s Television and Stereo and Jim Hicks, Jim’s T.V. Sales and Service, are both running Appeal ads this week announcing they are handling rental Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) movie tapes.

This month we want to celebrate a special resident, Delores Paullus. Delores has lived at Wildwood for 20 years. Delores was born in Paris on October 14, 1942 to Lillian McCann Smith and Roy Smith.

She attended Paris Schools.

Later she was baptized in the Christian Church in Madison. In 1993 Delores came to Wildwood Care Center to make her home.

She enjoys many special activities, fishing, movies, bowling and her favorite is Elvis Presley music.

Delores loves life and everyone around her.

Monroe County Nursing Home District: Sub-Districts #1 & 2 each have a threeyear position open. Potential candidates must live within the designated district they are applying to as a candidate. Declarations forms may be picked up at the County Clerk’s office at the courthouse – from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday – Friday. Floyd Buckman has filed for District #1 and Denny Hollingsworth has filed for District #2.

Monroe County Health Department: The Monroe County Health department has no trustee openings this election cycle.

Madison Board of Education: The Madison C-3 Board of Education has three threeyear terms available. Filing may take place during regular school hours when school is in session at the Superintendent’s Office, 309 Thomas Street. Candidates must comply with laws concerning eligibility and campaign financing and campaign disclosures.

Monroe County Ambulance District: Positions are available for District 1 and District 5. Filings may be made at Monroe County Ambulance District, 25521 Highway 24, Paris, on MondayFriday, from 9-3 p.m. through Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014.

Paris Rural Fire Protection District: No director positions are open this year.

Cannon Water District: A candidate for director for Sub-District No. 3 of the Cannon Water Supply District No. 1 of Ralls, Monroe and Marion Counties, Missouri, which one office will be filled at the annual election for the Board of Directors within said District to be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, candidates must file their declaration of candidacy with the Clerk of the District at the District office located at 126 East Main Street, Perry, Missouri 63462.

The closing date is Jan. 21, 2014, at 5 p.m.

Special Road District: Joe Ralph Buckman has filed for office.

HOWARD F. KIZER 1932-2013

Howard F. Kizer, Jr., 81, a retired Paris businessman passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, at Audrain Medical Center, in Mexico.

Mr. Kizer was born May 13, 1932, in Hannibal, the oldest son of Howard F. and Alice Warren Kizer. He married the former Rose Dempsey of Bowling Green, on Feb. 14, 1960, and she survives at their home. He is also survived by his son, John Howard Kizer (Sarah) of Springfield, two grandchildren, Jake and Garrett Kizer, a brother, Phil Kizer of Frisco, Texas, two sisters, Kathryn Darrow of Florence, Mass. and Mary Edith Culp of Utica, N.Y., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Alice Stephens.

Mr. Kizer was a 1950 graduate of Mexico High School and received a degree in Pharmacy in 1955 from the University of Kansas. He was a licensed pharmacist for half a century.

Upon his college graduation from KU, he was commissioned a U.S. Navy Ensign through ROTC and served two years on active duty, first in flight school and later in anti-submarine warfare. He left the service as Lieutenant J.G. In 1961, Mr. and Mrs. Kizer purchased the Smithey Rexall Drug Store, in Paris, and operated the business for 35 years before selling the store and retiring

in 1996. Mr. Kizer was very active in the Paris Community. He served more than 30 years as a member of the Board of Directors at initially the Paris Savings Bank and later the United Missouri Bank. He was a member of the Paris United Methodist Church and a 60-year member of the Mexico Masonic Lodge. He was a former member and past president of the Paris Rotary Club, the Paris Progressive Club and the Mark Twain Country Club.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Agnew Funeral Home, in Paris. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Agnew Funeral Home. Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery, at Paris.

Memorial donations may be made to Paris United Methodist Church or the Monroe County Cancer Supporters.

Pastor Kenny’s sermon today was titled, “How You Can Be Blessed.” Scripture was taken from Psalm 41:1-3. Consider the poor, both in finances and in spirit. The Lord will strengthen you in your bed of illness. He will deliver you from your enemies and longer life here on earth for considering the poor. We need to look around us and realize how blessed we are. Think of those that are poor in spirit every day. Love your neighbor as yourself.

‘Disabled’ – means being at a disadvantage; having restriction and/or impairments ‘Disqualified’ – means being deprived of power, rights, and privileges; ineligible for the prize 1 Chronicles 4:9-10; Philippians 1:6; Philippians 2:13 Jabez was spiritually and emotionally disabled, through his mother’s emotional pain over her family. Through it all his mother taught him about the God of Israel. She didn’t let her disabilities disqualify her. Now it was time for Jabez to call on God. When you’re at a disadvantage, it just makes sense to call on God! In his prayer, Jabez asked God to bless him ‘indeed’. This means he was asking to be blessed beyond questioning, without a doubt. Jabez also asked God to ‘enlarge his coast (territory)-he wanted God to move and eradicate anything that would stop him from having ownership. When God does this, know that He qualifies you to have the new territory.

From what he saw in his family, Jabez knew that he had to submit to God to be kept from evil, so it would not grieve him and grieve others around him. Because of his submission, God granted Jabez ‘that’ which he requested. He requested everything that qualified him to overcome his disabilities.

Know that your disability does not cause God to be disabled. You just have to enlarge your faith and prayer and watch God take your disabling situation and transform it for your good.

Time was offered at the altar for prayer and salvation.

Gale Wilkerson gave the invocation. A video was shown about the missionaries who have received help with the money they received through the Lottie Moon foreign mission offering.

Jimmie Stewart gave the children’s sermon. We can all be missionaries here at home by sharing Jesus with our friends.

He showed different items he had from his missionary trips in the Philippines, El Salvador, Belarus, and Africa. He received help with money from the Lottie Moon offerings. His scripture was from Matthew 28:19-20.

Wesley Hammond gave the Call to Worship. Our thoughts should be on our Relationship with God, our Fellowship with God and our Walk with God. We should focus outwardly to see what God wants us to do at the end of this year and be excited to serve God in the New Year.

The choir sang special music, “He Came For Us”, led by Cheryl Gholson. Wesley Hammond led the congregation in special prayers.

Reverend Wesley Hammond’s sermon was titled “Endurance Faith”, from Revelation 14:9-13. God sent the angels to give the message to his servant John of things to come. God’s provision is sufficient. We can choose to worship God or follow the ways of the world which are self destructive. We must persevere with patient endurance. Our salvation cannot be taken away. We must stay steadfast through any hardships that will come. Are we more interested in the here and now or are we looking ahead? Faith and belief in God give us the ability to persevere and will carry us through.

Steve Ensor sang the invitation hymn at the close of the service.

The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service Sunday, Dec. 29. The usher for this week’s service was John Gilmore . Patti Grimmett led the congregation into worship service with, “Silent Night.” “ The beginning hymn was, “Joy to the World.” Pastor John Grimmett led the congregation in a responsive reading.

Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns. He gave a pastoral prayer and The Lord’s Prayer. Pastor John Grimmett read the scripture reading from Matthew 2. He also gave the message, “What Are You Looking For?” The closing hymn was, “As With Gladness Men of Old.” The benediction response was, “We Three Kings.” Patti Grimmett led the congregation out of worship service with, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”

The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold worship service next Sunday, Jan. 5. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:45 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Given the abundance of social and political issues to choose from these days, one can easily be drawn into counter- productive discussion concerning personal rights. The Book of the Revelation briefly discusses the Laodicean church age; which when translated means the ‘age of human rights’ (with laos meaning the laity, or the populace, and dices meaning rights)…an era in which people demand respect and acceptance from everyone else. Not to diminish the needs of those who lack social acceptance, we must be careful in developing our cultural mindset. Ironically, actions and efforts that are intended to foster inclusion often instead foster isolation. People can become so self-conscious that they also become self-ish…focusing on self, rather than the on the whole. In the ninth chapter of the book of Daniel, we read Daniel’s words as he laments the fact that virtually everyone is guilty of disobeying God’s word, “we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments.” And later he prays, “O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.” Rather than pointing a finger at someone else, and accusing them of being his personal problem, he includes the entire nation: pointing to the corporate sin against God. Issues that separate us from one another also separate us from God: as we fervently accuse others, often in total disregard of our own failings. We have become more of a “Me” generation, and less of a “We” generation.

God’s idea of inclusive rights is best represented by the paradigm expressed by Daniel. If we include ourselves as part of the problem, we are more likely to be part of the solution.

The Sunday, Dec. 29 services at South Fork Presbyterian church began with Debbie Carey playing “We Three Kings” on the piano followed by Pastor John Grimmett leading in song to “Joy to the World”, “What Child Is This”, “Doxology”, “As With Gladness Men of Old” and “Angels We Have Heard On High” as he played guitar and led the Responsive Reading.

Prayer was for the Grimmetts and Amanda; Margaret Birlew; J D Whelan; Bob and Jean Deason; Clyde Oligschlaeger; Albert Sinclair; the Day-Thornhill family; the Beuter family and praise for a family finding work; for the new 2014 year with all saying the Lord’s Prayer.

Debbie sang “Twas in the Moon of Wintertime” a Huron Indian Carol, as she played guitar.

The message “What Are You Looking For?” was based on scripture from Matthew 2 as the Wise Men looked for baby Jesus, following a star, they presented Him with gifts. What are we looking for? There are a lot of unhappy people in the world today - Faith - Hope - Love - Joy! Where is it in your life? How do you define these things? God interrupts lives everyday - He is there watching over people. Food, clothing, warm homes those are just ordinary - but not to everyone.

God came to help you and me find a friend in Jesus, who can provide for you in everything. The Wise Men found the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ. Believe in something, finding happiness, hope and love, see what God is doing for you.

Services are held every Sunday at 9 a.m. and all are welcome to come hear the word of the Lord.

The congregation of Holliday Christian Church gathered for worship as they were treated to special duet music, “Peace on Earth” performed by Jane Akers, organist, and Sally Blakemore, pianist, as they were for each hymn on the morning of Dec. 29. Reverend David Holmes welcomed all in attendance, including special guests – the Greg and Duane Blakemore families from Kansas City and Colorado, respectively.

Christmas offering envelopes are still available at the rear of the sanctuary. The quarterly county-wide hymn is scheduled for Jan. 19, at Holliday.

The fourth Advent Sunday celebration was observed due to cancellation of church on Dec. 22. Jerry Ragsdale lit the first three and then the fourth candle and gave a reading. Zelmajo Ragsdale read scripture from Luke 2:8-14 and Psalms 91:11-16. Mendy Blades then shared a reading. Zelmajo led the congregation in prayer. The Christ candle was then lighted by Jerry. Scripture from Isaiah 9:2-7 and the fourth chapter of John was read by Zelmajo. Mendy gave a reading and Zelmajo shared a prayer. The congregation stood to sing “Joy to the World.”

Prayer concerns were expressed for: Pete Olney’s sisterin-law, Margaret Ruth, Sandy Carter, Beverly Wandrey, Raylee Griffith, Leona Pence, Greg Huffman and Paul Thrasher.

Sympathy was extended to the family of Howard Kizer.

The prayer hymn, “O Little Town of Bethlehem” was sung; pastoral prayer and unison recital of the Lord’s Prayer followed. As elders, Jerry Ragsdale and Guy Callison, went forward to serve, “Away In A Manger” was sung. Serving as deacons were Nellis Kotsenburg and Gary Wilson. Following sharing of communion and offerings, the doxology ended the communion service.

Reverend Holmes read scripture from Matthew 2:1-12 to illustrate the morning message, “Seeking...Discovering…

Returning a Different Way”. As the wise men heard of Jesus’ birth and sought Him out, they were changed by the experience. Yes, they returned home by a different route to avoid King Herod following the message brought to them by an angel – they also returned different (changed) by their experiences. Much as we are changed by knowing our Saviour.

The congregation stood to sing the closing hymn, “O Come, All Ye Faithful”. Morning worship closed with prayer and singing of the “Spirit Song”.

Following a time of fellowship and to enjoy refreshments, Sandy Callison read “God Wants Us to Forgive Others” from “365 Things God Wants Us to Know.” Mendy Blades shared “Santa Speaks to Jesus”. Jim McMorris then led the group in prayer and in study of Luke 22:36-65.

Services are held each Sunday with worship at 9:30 a.m., and Bible Study at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The Madison Grace United Methodist Church held worship Sunday, Dec. 29. Since there was not church last week, we held our Christmas Program and also did the 4th Sunday of Advent.

The Advent Candle lighting was done by Emily and Sami Painter.

The first scripture, Isaiah 7: 10-16 was read by Ashlyn Peterson.

The program was given by the youth, “A Charlie Christmas.” Sabrina Brown sang “Jingle, Jingle,” and “I Want to Wish You a Merry Christmas.” This was followed by the Adult Class, “A Christmas Crisis.”

SENIOR NEWS Warning: Black Ice Ahead

According to the Federal Highway Administration, more than 116,000 injuries and 1,300 fatalities occur in auto accidents on snowy or icy roads each year. A common culprit in many of these accidents is “black ice,” a transparent glaze that forms without bubbles, allowing it to easily blend into the surface of the road.

Decrease your chances of injury this winter by learning more about this slippery hazard.

Recognize Icy Conditions Black ice is most likely to form when there is a sudden temperature drop such as in the early morning and evening hours. Common problem areas are bridges, overpasses and shaded areas of the road. These areas have much colder surfaces that rapidly freeze when air moisture makes contact— especially if they’re near lakes or rivers.

Detect Warning Signs When favorable conditions are present, be on high alert.

Black ice looks a lot like wet blacktop. Look for these warning signs: Absence of water spray on a seemingly wet road Cars suddenly swerving or skidding Brake lights ahead Cars or tire tracks in the ditch Shiny surfaces next to a dull black Stay Calm on Black Ice If you’re caught on black ice, use these tips to maneuver past the problem area: Do nothing: Avoid making sudden moves or turning the wheel. Smoothly lift your foot off the accelerator and glide across the ice in a straight line until you find traction.

Shift: If possible, slowly shift to a lower gear for added control.

Brake wisely: If you begin to skid, firmly press on your brakes to activate the anti-lock brake system (ABS). Or, if you don’t have ABS, pump the brakes gently.

Avoid spinout: If your front end is sliding, steer in the opposite direction of the skid; if the back end is sliding, steer in the same direction.

Look toward where you want to go: Avoid looking where you think you might crash—you might inadvertently veer the car in that direction.

Avoid the Potential for Accidents To stay safer on the road this winter—in a variety of conditions—exercise these preventive measures: Check road conditions before you travel.

Slow down and don’t tailgate.

Never use cruise control when road conditions are uncertain or changing.

Use snow tires.

Don’t rely on all-wheel drive for ice—it won’t help you gain traction.
