Relay For Life of Monroe County features moving luminaria ceremony The American Cancer Society signature Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Although every Relay For Life is different, there are certain traditions at all Relays, no matter where they are held. These traditions help participants celebrate, remember, and fight back. Celebrate – The Survivors Lap Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – a inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories they’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are ensuring that more lives are saved each year – like those of each individual on the track. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. At Relay, people understand the frustrations and joys of being a caregiver, since the effects of cancer reach far beyond just the person diagnosed. Remember – The Luminaria Ceremony After dark, they honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. As people take time to remember, those who have walked alongside

others battling cancer can grieve and find healing. This is a time that truly highlights the importance of defeating this disease. Fight Back – The Fight Back Ceremony Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where they make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Celebrate, remember, and fight

back are themes that link all Relays events together. It’s Monroe County’s time to relay! The 2014 Relay For Life of Monroe County will be held Saturday, June 28 and end early Sunday, June 29, at the Paris Courthouse This year’s theme is “Create a World With More Birthdays” This annual American Cancer Society signature event begins at 6 p.m., with the Survivor Lap and ends at 1 a.m. this year rather than the usual 6 a.m., as in the past.. The goal of the participating teams is to have at least one walker on the track at all times. The exception to this rule is during the somber and emotional lumi-

Beat the Heat Cooling Centers Available

The heat has set in with May being the hottest May in history. Throughout the local area temperatures have been sultry with high humidity locally lately but as all know they can turn blistering at any time in July and August. Where can you go if you are without air conditioning or if you have an air malfunction? Local residents, who are without air conditioning or just need to cool down, may visit local cooling centers to help keep cool during this oppressive heat. In Paris, residents can go to the Senior Citizen’s Center for relief or they may use the library facilities during their operating hours. “Anyone can come in and get relief from the heat,” said Senior Citizen’s Center Director Tara Sheffield. “Come beat the heat and stay cool with us - we enjoy the company.” The Senior Center is open for heat relief from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., on any day the center is open (Monday through Friday) “The Community Building is air conditioned

and people can use that if necessary,” said Paris City Superintendent Phillip Shatzer.” All they have to do is check in with the city office personnel.” For more information about the city community building call 660-327-4334. People in Madison can use the Madison Community Center, on Main Street, for heat relief. If a resident needs a ride to the center or for additional information they can contact the Madison City Clerk, at 660-291-5235. In Monroe City, the Senior Center has been designated a “cooling center.” The center is open from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday. Call 573-735-2131 for additional information. During the summer, heat and humidity can cause serious health problems with little or no warning, and with highs in the 90’s and not much relief at night, Monroe County residents

Pets and Fireworks Don’t Mix: The loud crack and boom of fireworks can frighten animals and cause even the most obedient pets to behave out of character. A startled dog or cat may hide or try to escape the noise by digging under, chewing through or climbing over fences. To help make the holiday fun for humans and safe for pets, the Humane Society of Missouri has a few tips for this Fourth of July holiday.

To keep your pet safe - do: Give your pet a quiet, cool place to retreat inside where sounds are less intense. Dogs and cats are sensitive to loud noises as they can be painful to their ears. Keeping them inside will also protect them from stray fireworks or from those who may seek to intentionally harm pets with fireworks.
