BUDDY WALK FUNDRAISER AUG. 30

With a new school year beginning, most kids think of homework, games and time with friends. The last thought for most children is “What will I eat this weekend?” Unfortunately for more than sixty thousand children, hunger is their reality. This summer you can help The Food Bank feed hungry kids. On Saturday, August 30 join your community at the Paris Elementary School Gym at 9 a.m., for the first ever “Buddy Walk” fundraiser. Elementary students will be collecting donations this week. All the money raised will go to feed hungry children in your town on holidays and weekends. For more information visit www.sharefoodbringhope.org or call 573-474-1020. Join Buddy Walk and help us flunk hunger this school year.

Triple Digit Heat reaches local area - temps top 100⁰

It may have been cooler in the months of June and July but the heat in August has hit with a vengeance. The temperatures have hit triple digits and numerous activities have been delayed or cancelled due to heat issues. Where can you go if you are without air conditioning or if you have an air malfunction? Local residents, who are without air conditioning or just need to cool down, may visit local cooling centers to help keep cool during this oppressive heat. In Paris, residents can go to the Senior Citizen’s Center for relief or they may use the library facilities during their operating hours. “Anyone can come in and get relief from the heat,” said Senior Citizen’s Center Director Tara Sheffield. “Come beat the heat and stay cool with us - we enjoy the company.” The Senior Center is open for heat relief from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., on any day the center is open (Monday through Friday) “The Community Building is air conditioned and people can use that if necessary,” said Paris City Superintendent Phillip Shatzer.” All they have to do is check in with the city office personnel.” For more information about the city community building call 660-327-4334. People in Madison can use the Madison Community Center, on Main Street, for heat relief. If a resident needs a ride to the center or for additional information they can contact the Madison City Clerk, at 660-291-5235. In Monroe City, the Senior Center has been designated a “cooling center.” The center is open from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday. Call 573-735-2131 for additional information.
