Pink Out Game - Jan. 21

In a moving display of community service, two former, now graduated, Paris R-II students Lauren Embree and John DeOrnellis launched a “Pink Out Basketball” campaign to raise awareness of cancer and help to raise money to assist county cancer patients with medical expenses. This dynamic duo created an annual event from a rivalry game that changed the rivalry to selling T-shirts and hoodies to raise awareness and raise money to fight cancer. But now since their graduation the baton has been passed and now in the forefront of the “Pink Out” phenomenon are Betsy Embree and Austin Thomas. Betsy is the daughter of Kevin and Shari Embree, Paris, and Austin is the son of Keith and Marti Thomas, Madison Madison C-3 hosted the first two games and the venue will move to the Paris R-II gym this season, on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. Between now and the game students from the two schools compete to see who could sell the most pink T-shirts and hoodies. The intent is to have everyone in the gym that night - wear pink. In a good-natured spirit of competition P I N K O U T

the Paris or Madison class that sells the most pink t-shirts and hoodies by percentage will be awarded with a pizza party. All proceeds, as usual, from the shirts and hoodies sales go to the Monroe County Cancer Supporters and in turn directly to county families dealing with the financial burden re-

sulting from a cancer diagnosis. This year paper basketballs have been added for sale. They cost $1.00 and are being mounted on the walls of the gyms. Last year over 600 shirts and hoodies were sold and over $4,000 raised. For additional information contact Shari Embree 660-216-5589 or Mary DeOrnellis 573-473-6938.

Former PHS student selected as Dickinson Scholar, at Mizzou

Jaelyn Bergmann, Paris, was selected as a Dickinson Scholar at the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR). The Dickinson Scholars Program provides an opportunity for CAFNR students to become acquainted with the Kansas City agribusiness community. The students will be divided into teams for a project-based tour of Kansas City agribusinesses taking place from Jan. 13-17. The tours are designed to be interactive, as the primary objective of the program is to integrate students’ classroom education with the realities of the business environment. In addition, the program gives students opportunities to hear from Kansas City agribusiness professionals, meet CAFNR alumni in the greater Kansas City area and visit with hosts from the companies involved in the program. “I am excited and honored to be traveling to the Kansas City area to interact with agribusinesses as a Dickinson Scholar,” Bergmann said. “I am excited to learn how Kansas City agribusinesses are advocating for agriculture, an industry on which our nation depends. I’m thankful for the opportunity to broaden my agriculture knowledge and experience so I can effectively advocate and contribute to the future of agriculture.” Bergmann, who graduated from Paris R-II High School in 2012, is a sophomore at MU studying agricultural education with minors in agricultural economics and leadership in agriculture. She is the daughter of David and Laura Bergmann. She is a member of the Sigma Alpha professional agriculture sorority, the MU Collegiate Farm Bureau, the Agriculture Education Society and the Missouri Future Farmers of America. Bergmann is also a Jerry Litton Leadership Scholar. The Litton Leadership program is designed to foster future agriculture leaders.
