The first meeting will take place on Monday, Jan. 19, at 5:30 p.m., at Kendrick’s Insurance Building.

CITY OF PARIS OFFERING FREE GAS CONNECTIONS

Effective until March 31 the City of Paris will be offering free connections for potential natural gas customers inside the City Limits and the connection would be completed before October 15, 2015.

Customers would have to agree to switch their main heating source to natural gas for three years and the customer would have to pay any costs to switch appliances and/or piping inside their home or building. Pink Out!!! The 2015 “Pink Out” game is to played on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Madison C-3 Schools, with tip off set for 6 p.m.

You often hear comments about the future generation and what will it be like when they are older and in charge. Well I am here to tell you it will be great if they are anything like the students of both Madison and Paris schools.

John DeOrnellis and Lauren Embree started the Pink Out phenomenon but the torch has been passed to two worthy youth Betsy Embree and Austin Thomas.

“Being Lauren’s sister it is both an honor and obligation to do it to help out the community,” said Betsy Embree. “With Austin and myself being in 4-H we thought it was a great idea.”

“This means a lot to me as I know several people who have been affected by cancer and to help the community and be able to raise money is awesome,”

“We do this to help people who are fighting cancer and battling it,” said Thomas. “This is personal for me!”

To echo Austin’s words - it’s personal for many of us.

Thank goodness we have students and young people, throughout the community who step up and contribute in numerous ways to make the quality of life in the county what it is today.

I think our future is assured!

MY TURN It’s the Coaching

When we talk about our favorite teams and players the subject of coaches and managers often comes up as well.

This is true for our Professional teams and for the College level teams.

When the subject is our teams for high school and younger kids we do not hear about coaches all that often.

But we are in closer contact with our younger kids’ development and progress in sports activities then than later on after high school.

When we turn our young sons and daughters over to coaches and assistants there is an implied agreement by coaches to teach fundamentals like hitting off a tee or learning the right ways to dribble or pass a basketball and to keep the kids safe and properly supervised in the process. In exchange, the kids agree to give their best effort to learning the sport and in cooperating with the coaches and the other kids.

These coaches are often volunteers with varying degrees of experience and knowledge and teachers with classes to teach and prepare for in addition to their coaching duties and who may also have limited coaching or actual playing backgrounds.

Coaches of young kids can be faced with a large range of differences in natural ability, hand

-eye coordination, speed, physical development and strength as well as differences in the time it takes for each team member to apply what is being taught or demonstrated. And sometimes that bright child of ours who knew the alphabet and months of the year at 2, could drive a truck or tractor at 6 and took his or her first deer at7 or 8, can trip over a shadow and is just not good at some sports.

Coaches, like the rest of us, can make mistakes.

We may not agree with their decisions, their style or the way they interact with the kids, or which team member gets to play when. Coaches are also blessed with the doubleedged sword of being fair with playing time for each kid and those who come to see him or her play and the team goal to win each game which may require the coach to play his/her most talented athletes at all critical times in the contest.

Most of us that have played sports and/or coached teams are tempted to point out something we would have done differently from the coach at some point, and that our kids deserve better coaching. That’s the point at which we should silently add “and better examples from their parents and family” smile and move on.

90 Years January 23, 1925 The Thorton and Arnold Meat Market is being enlarged to double its present size in order to put in a complete stock of groceries.

Roy Houghton, near Holliday, will have a sale February 2, following which he will move to Paris.

At Paris, Thursday, buyers were paying 46 cents for eggs, 33 cents for cream, 18 cents for hens, 11 cents for geese and 15 cents for ducks.

W. Smith Jones of Holliday has wished all his life for the opportunity to see a total eclipse of the sun, to he took the train.

Mrs. Julia Mason, the county superintendent, is stressing the importance of penmanship.

She reports considerable interest among teachers and noticeable improvement among the pupils in rural schools.

75 Years January 18, 1940 Billy Davis Overfelt, nine year old son of Mr. and Mr.s William Overfelt, and Patsy McCully, 12 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McCully of Chicago, who lives with and has been raised by her grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Peyton, were awarded the annual Henry Boatner Courtesy prizes at the community gathering held Sunday evening in the Paris High School auditorium. Billy is a fourth grade student, Patsy is a sixth grade student.

Monroe County is suffering from the worst snow blockade in many years. Nearly all the north and south roads have been several feet under drifts which, in places, extended from fence to fence.

Members of the Paris High School boy’s basketball squad are: Harry Bare, Coach E.L. Patison and Chal Henderson, J.T. McGee, John Lee Hickey, Jack Noonan, Bill Morrisey, George Nevins and Joe Kelly.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bodine of Washington Township, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Painter are the parents of a nine pound baby boy, born Tuesday, January 16. He has been named Donald Jean.

Mrs. George R. Poage sold her residence property at Denton, Texas, last week. She and her adopted son, Bob, plan to come home with her sister, Mrs. Ruth Owens, about March and make their home with Mrs. Owens in Paris.

Mrs. Edgar Gibbs teacher of Hickory Grove School, attended a teachers’ meeting at Paris, Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Threlkeld of near Paris visited their daughter, Mrs. Frank Vaughn and

daughter, Thursday.

Forrest Menefee has rented the former Atterbury farm and he and Mrs. Menefee and family will move to it from the Glasscock farm when Mr. and Mrs. Ed Atterbury and daughters move to the former Everett Jones farm which Mr. Atterbury bought recently.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen Forbis and family will move this spring to the Shrader farm south of Holliday, which he recently bought under the Tenant Purchase Plan of the government. Mr. and Mrs. Crosswhite will move to the farm west of Holliday vacated by Mr. Forbis.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Slater were proud parents of a baby girl which arrived Tuesday morning. Mrs. Clara Wood of Lentner came Thursday to take care of the mother and baby.

50 Years January 21, 1965 John Lee Farrell, Madison, now living in the Wildwood Rest Home south of there, was 100 years old Monday.

Three long time employees of the Monroe County highway department will retire this year, either during the year or at the close of the year.

They are Noah Ricks, Dysart Delaney and Russell Bondurance. James Hunt was appointed to replace Harold (Boss) Bare, who recently resigned to take over management of the Pleasant View Rest Home with his wife.

The Rigg Café in Paris, operated by Mrs. Edgar Rigg and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Rigg for many years was sold last week to Mrs. Evelyn Henry, who took possession Tuesday. She was to close the café for several days for renovation.

Seaman Recruit Gary L. Menefee, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cloyce G. Menefee of Holliday, began nine weeks of basic training Dec. 21, at the Recruit Training Command, Naval Training Center, San Diego, California.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hamilton, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Robinson and Mr. and Mrs. Justus Olney attended the Annual Meeting of the Missouri Chapter of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America, Saturday evening at Reed’s Corner, Moberly. Olney was elected vice president of the group.

Miss Virginia Herron, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Herron, and James Montgomery, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Montgomery will be married Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Church.

Their sixth child, a daughter, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Buckman on Saturday, Jan. 16 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hannibal. The baby has been named Mary Kathryn. They have four boys and one other girl.

30 Years January 17, 1985 The 21st Annual Paris Basketball Tournament is now history and will be remembered as one of the best tournaments in recent years. The Coyotes’ victory marked the first time the boys have won the championship in their own tournament since 1978. Just for the record, Paris has won their tournament eight times in 21 years. They retained the crown from 1964 through 1969, won it again in 1978 and re-

captured it in 1985.

Glenwood Blackaby was installed as the Worshipful Master of Paris Union Lodge #19 Monday night during installation ceremonies at the Lodge building in Paris.

Mrs. Garry (Judy) Young recently began working part-time at Shatzer’s Crop Service.

Madison Mayor Lennos Bryant submitted his resignation as Mayor of Madison effective April 2, 1985. He stated personal reasons for his decision.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wolfe have contracted to purchase Avery’s Snack Bar from the owners Mr. and Mrs. Bill Avery, Madison. The Wolfe’s will assume management of the business on February 1st.

KENT “SNOOZE” SHATZER 1944-2014

Kent “Snooze” Shatzer, 70 of Paris, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2015 at Monroe Manor Nursing Home in Paris.

Kent was born on April 29, 1944 at Paris, the son of Charles William and Hazel May Key Shatzer. He graduated from Paris High School in 1962. While attending high school he worked at Pelsue Shoe store in Paris.

Kent served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968, during the Vietnam War. He was employed by Jack Simpson Construction Company and lost his legs, below the knees, in a construction accident in 1976.

Then he managed Pine Package Liquor Store for Jack Simpson. After it closed, he was a paper carrier for Twin Rivers Trading Post until March of 2013.

Kent is survived by two sons; Jason Shatzer of Columbia and Garrett Shatzer of Perry; one grandchild; Macey Shatzer; one foster son, Tanner Spurlock, two brothers, Roger (Karlena) Shatzer and Phillip (Cheryl) Shatzer both of Paris; one nephew, Brad Shatzer of Mexico; four nieces; Debora Stone of Paris, Jolene Shatzer of St. Louis, Lindsey Rockhill of Springfield and Lauren Shatzer of Columbia and two cousins; Charlotte Foster of Shelbina and Roger Byars of San Rafael, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service was held at Agnew Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 10 with Reverend John Grimmett officiating. Visitation was held from 12-2 p.m., on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial was in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Betsy is the daughter of Kevin and Shari Embree, Paris, and Austin is the son of Keith and Marti Thomas, Madison Each year the game has rotated between the two schools and this year the game will be held in Madison, at the Madison C-3 Schools gymnasium on Tuesday, Jan. 20, with tip off set for 6 p.m.

Between now and the game students from the two schools compete to see who could sell the most pink T-shirts and hoodies. The intent is to have everyone in the gym that night - wear pink.

In a good-natured spirit of competition the Paris or Madison class that sells the most pink t-shirts and hoodies by percentage will be awarded with a pizza party.

All proceeds, as usual, from the shirts and hoodies, and paper basketball sales go to the Monroe County Cancer Supporters and in turn directly to county families dealing with the financial burden resulting from a cancer diagnosis. Paper basketballs are now for sale at both schools to help raise additional funds. They cost $1.00 and are being mounted on the walls of the gyms.

Last year over 70 shirts and hoodies were sold and over $5,000 raised.

WILMA J. WELGE 1938-2014

Wilma J. Welge, 76, left her home in Sedalia, Missouri to be with her lord on Monday, January 5, 2015.

She was born in Paris, on June 11, 1938 to Beldon and Katie Newbrough.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Marvin “Bud” Newbrough, two sisters, Mary Francis Scobee and Lillie Mae Moore. She leaves behind her husband, Ronald Welge, her three children, Brad Welge, Robin McPherson, Kay Hickman, and four grandchildren, Alex Gutierrez, Elise Hickman, Ryan Hickman, and Matthew Hickman, all of Sedalia. January 11 services at the Holliday Christian Church opened with the prelude by Jane Akers, organist.

Reverend David Holmes welcomed the congregation and everyone joined in the opening hymn, “Bring Them In” Everyone was reminded of the January 21 meeting at the church at 7:30 p.m. This is in regards to a fire house possibly being built in Holliday and all are encouraged to attend.

Birthdays honored were Sandy Callison, Ann Ragsdale, Angelia Baker, Bridget Baker and Katie Baker.

Prayer concerns went out to the Kent Shatzer family, Ray Parrish, Phyllis Dixon, Zelma Lou Griffith, Bob Wiesner and all those who are traveling.

The prayer hymn, “Only Trust Him” was sung followed by pastoral prayer and everyone joined in the lords prayer.

As elders Guy Callison and Phil Blakemore and Deacons John Ragsdale and Gerald Thrasher made their way to the Communion table the congregation sang “Bread of Heaven”. The taking of communion was followed by the offering taken and doxology.

The scripture reading for the day was from Mark Chapter 1, vs .4-11 and Reverend Holmes message was titled My Favorite Son. The hymn of invitation and dedication was “We’ve a Story To Tell To The Nations”, followed by “The Spirit Song”.

Bible study was opened with prayer by Jim McMorris.

Mendy Blades shared a reading titled “Let God Guide You” and Sandy Callison read from the book, “ 365 Things God Wants You To Know, Your Life In Christ Is Like A Fragrance”.

Scripture study was from Romans Chapter 2, vs. 1728 and Chapter 3, vs. 1-21.

Services at Holliday Christian Church are every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., with bible study following at 10:30 a.m. All are invited to attend.

Services Sunday, Jan. 11 began with Patti Grimmett playing “As the Deer” followed by Pastor John Grimmett leading in prayer for travelers this week; the Shatzer family; the Graupman family; Glenn Campbell; Uncle Raymond; Aunt Susie; Bryan Carey, Dennis and Peggy Routt; Stanley Vaughn; and for new leadership of the Ralls County Herald, with all saying the Lord’s Prayer.

Debbie Carey led in song to “Revive Us Again”, “O Master Let Me Walk With Thee”, “Make Me a Channel of Blessing” and “Threefold Amen”.

Pastor John and Patti played guitar as she sang “Prayer for Renewal” written by Patti.

The Message “More Like the Master” was based on scripture from Philippians 2:1-5 as we are to live a life serving the Lord - Jesus came to serve US... He came as a servant. Are you searching your soul for Christ Jesus?

You need the power to overcome hurdles. We are called to be free... fear not! Serve one another in love! Love your neighbor as yourself - a unity of purpose - when there is trouble PRAY! Pray for guidance... There are those called to preach, teach, heal, prophesy, and many other abilities to serve the Lord. Are you using your talents to spread the news of Jesus Christ? The greatest commandment is to “Love your neighbor as yourself ” What are you called to do? You are God’s disciple... lay down your life for Him! He is our role model and guide...

Pastor John Grimmett

The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service January 11. This Sunday we installed two elders Rob Wood and Ed Bordeleau. The ushers for this week’s service were John Gilmore and Ed Bordeleau. Patti Grimmett led the congregation into worship service with, “As the Deer.” Pastor John Grimmett led the congregation in a responsive opening prayer. Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns and celebrations and led the congregation in a unison prayer of confession.

Patti and John Grimmett performed the special music piece, “Prayer for Renewal.” Pastor John Grimmett delivered the message, “The Light of His Grace.” The closing hymn was, “Here I Am Lord.” Patti Grimmett led the congregation out of worship service with, “Be Thou My Vision .”

The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold worship service next Sunday, January 11. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:45 a.m.

A sitter is provided during worship service for any children.

The Madison Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), located at 200 West Broadway in Madison held worship services on Jan. 11. Rev. David Holmes message, Christ Brings New Life, was based on a scripture passage from Mark 1:4-11. The Adult Choir sang Gloryland Medley for the special music.

Following worship a carry in meal was served in the church dining hall. A planning meeting for the 2015 church year was held after the meal.

Upcoming events include the Elders Meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by the meeting of the Official Board. The youth meet on Wednesday at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The annual Sweetheart Banquet will be held on Sunday, February 15. Tickets are available at the church or the community center.

Serving at the Lord’s Table on Jan. 18 are Danny Stith and Judy Harmon, Elders; Karla Salmons, Taylor Salmons, Hunter Salmons, and Kahler Mitchell, Diaconate; and Danny Stith, communion preparer.

Everyone is invited to attend all services of the church. Sunday School is held each Sunday at 10 a.m. and is followed by worship at 11 p.m.

Gale Wilkerson gave the invocation following the prelude by Kathy Miller. Brenda Ensor served at the piano accompanying the hymns.

Lindsey Mitchell gave the children’s sermon. She showed the children M&M’s. She asked what the “M” stood for and jokingly said maybe it was for “Mitchell”.

Then she told them that the “M” stood for ministry, to tell others about Jesus. If you turn the “M” upside down you have a “W”, which is “walk” with God. Her scripture reference was 1 John 4:9, that God sent his son so that we might live through Him. Steve Ensor gave the Call to Worship from Job 19:25.

Mike DeOrnellis played on his guitar and sang an original song, “Michael’s Prayer”. Mark and Courtney Bell led children’s church.

Reverend Wesley Hammond’s sermon was titled “The Father’s Promise” from Acts 1:4-5. The Holy Spirit is God’s promise given to us. Many people do not realize what they have in the Holy Spirit. God gave the promise about the land in Canaan. In Luke 24, v.49, Jesus says “And look I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.” In John 3:5, Jesus says, “I assure you: unless someone is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” When we confess our sin, and accept Christ in our life and we are baptized, the Holy Spirit takes up residence within us.

Berry Bishop Long’s message was entitled: “The worst of Times, the Best of Times” “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lover of pleasures more than lovers of God” - II Timothy 3:1-4. The worst of times, the best of times, we are seemly caught in the middle, what goes on around you doesn’t have to control what goes on inside you. We have the choice to allow anything control us, but the choice should be guided by truth involving a positive outcome. Yes, even in the worst of times, one can experience a peace in spite of what is going on around them. “Flee also youthful lusts; but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledge of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” II Timothy 2:22-26.

Your obedience to the Holy scriptures is able to make you wise, that having faith in Jesus Christ results in freedom and joy within you, for the Lord is faithful to his word even the the worst of times. “And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom; to who be glory for ever and ever. Amen,” II Timothy 4:18. For God got it all in control in the worst of time and the best of times.

“For the Beauty of the Earth” sung by the choir began the January 11 worship service for the Perry Christian Church. Greg Harrison gave the greetings. Diane Hickman and Brenda Duncan were welcomed. They will be giving the message in song.

“Great is the Lord” was sung in praise. The prayer hymn was “Spirit of God”. Don Hickman and Shirley Hansen were added to the prayer list. Updates were for DeWanes Hansen, Kara Hansen, Jason Jaycox, Ryan Raines and Jim Wells. The choir response was “Spirit of the Living God” The communion meditation was given by Greg and “Breathe on Me Breath of God” was sung before sharing the Lord’s Supper.

Jeannie Gay told the children how the new year can be the beginning of a new life in Jesus.

Mark 1:4-11 was the scripture read by John DiMaria.

“The Joyful Sound” presented an inspirational musical message for the morning sermon. It is a blessing they are so willing to share their talent.

“I Surrender All” was the invitation hymn. Arlen Provancha pronounced the benediction and the service closed singing “Heavenly Sunlight”.

 

“Parables” was the title of Pastor Kenny Sharp’s sermon with scripture texts taken from Matthew 20:1-16 and Matthew 21:28-46. The first parable was of the workers in the vineyard who were hired at different times but were all paid the same which tells us that a person receiving salvation at the last hour of life has the same salvation as a person who received it at a earlier time as stated in verse 16 - “So the last will be first and the first will be last.” The second parable was of the two sons where only one of the sons worked in the vineyard or in other words “He did the will of the Father.” The last parable was of the tenants who worked in a landowner’s vineyard. We are to plant seeds to harvest the sharing of salvation. Remember - seek Him first!

Serving at the Lord’s Table were Bob Conley, Charlie Horstmeier, Dennis Kendrick, Don Wilkerson, Bill Miller and Charles Thomas.

Thank you notes were read from Patty Elliott, Keith and Linda Deaver, Faith Walk Ministeries and Dustin and Melissa Wilson. Happy birthday was sung to Chase Kendrick. Many prayer concerns were lifted for friends and family members as well as the problems in the world. Praises for healings were also shared.

A baptism service will be held at the Paris Christian Church following worship service on Sunday, Jan 25, for Russell Elliott, Shelly Holmes, William Wilson and Lyndsie Bambaugh.

Announcements: Salt Saturday youth group meeting will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. The group plans on visiting residents at Monroe Manor.

The members are encouraged to bring a friend. Karen Conley announced that the Blow Away Cancer event will be Saturday, March 7, at the Paris High School.

Sunday School is held every Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:30 a.m. Bible study is on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m., (meal at 6 p.m.). Everyone is welcome to come!

Lady Coyotes capture consolation title

The Paris Lady Coyotes participated in the Madison Tournament this past week and for the second tourney in a row took home trophy hardware. This time in the trophy for the consolation champs. The Lady Coyotes fell to Salisbury in the opening round in a nail biting 39-38 thriller.

In the consolation bracket the lady Coyotes defeated Madison 47-22 and then defeated Mark Twain in the consolation final 3426. Drew Lockhart averaged 14 points for the tourney.

Salisbury Salisbury led in the first quarter 10-5 and at the half 27-19 before Paris mounted a comeback to take a 12-7 third quarter to pull within three points. Betsy Embree hit a monster three pointer to give Paris a 38-37 lead with less than a minute to go but Salisbury hit an offensive put back late to win the 39-38 contest.

Drew Lockhart led the scoring with 12 points and Brooke Rentschler led in rebounds. Carmyn Holmes led the team in blocks with Lockhart leading in assists.

Drew Lockhart knocked down 15 points and cleaned the glass for 11 boards for a double double while Brooke Rentschler gave her team second chance points pulling down 15 boards for the contest. Britany Williams chipped in with an 8 point game. Lockhart also led the team in both steals and assists.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A HOME Home shopping for first-time homebuyers it’s an exciting, albeit nervewracking, experience.

If you’re like others in the market for their first home, you probably have in mind exactly how your soon-to-be home will look.

But it’s important not to fall into the bad decorating, dingy walls and dirt-bare back yard equals bad-home trap. If you don’t see past the hideous wallpaper, funky light fixtures and avocado green carpeting, you may miss out on a home with great potential.

And, if you’re looking for a home in a seller’s market where homes are being snatched up as soon as they go on the market, you’ll come to realize you can’t be choosy if you want to make a competitive offer.

One of the first things to do is to get pre-approved for a loan and determine the maximum you can afford to offer for a house. Don’t look at homes that are asking for more than 5 percent above your maximum, otherwise you’ll be setting yourself up for disappointment if you find the

perfect—but outside your budget—home.

So what to do?

The floor plan of the home is extremely important. If a floor plan isn’t quite to your liking, consider rearranging it or adding on. If you’re looking at an existing home and will need to remodel or expand to suit your needs, the estimated cost of renovation needs to be considered when making an offer.

Walls. While these are among the easiest to remedy, they also make a huge first impression. If the walls need to be painted, are covered in wallpaper or are painted a color you find distasteful, picture them crisp and clean in the color of your choice— that’s how they could look after you paint them.

Floors. Like walls, carpet or floor surfaces that are old or outdated can be easily replaced. You could even ask for a carpet allowance in your bid, especially if you’re in a buyer’s market.

View. Things like old, ugly—even dirty—windows and window treatments can make a view appear less desirable.
