Paris R-II Elementary Students of the Month...

During an early morning assembly - Paris R-II Elementary students were recognized by Counselor Hanna Snider as the elementary Students of the Month. It was noted that the students are learning about The 7 Habits of Happy Kids by Steven Covey. Each month they are focusing on one healthy habit. At the end of the month, classroom teachers select students to be that months Students of the Month. Twenty-five students Pre-K through sixth grade were recognized as Students of the Month.

The Monroe County Clerk’s Office has scheduled a School of Instructions for Election Judges who will be working at the November 4th General Election.

The session will be held on Friday, October 31 4 at 10 a.m., and will be held in the Circuit Courtroom on the third floor of the courthouse. Clerk Francis urges all election judges that are going to be working at the polls on November 4, to attend this meeting.

A public test or the ballot counting machines will be conducted on Thurs-

day, October 30, at 9 a.m. in the county clerk’s, office.

Also Clerk Francis wants everyone to know that the County Clerk’s Office will be open Saturday morning November 1 for absentee voting for the General Election. The Office will be open from 8 a.m. until 12 noon for the convenience or those people who will be unable to go to the polls for the November 4 Election. Monday November 3 will be the last day to vote absentee; the clerk’s office will remain open until

5 p.m.

Monroe County votes who would like to look at their ballot options prior to voting may find Sample Ballots listed on the Secretary or State Website at www. sos.mo.gov. Click on the Elections tab and enter voters name, address, birth date, Monroe County and that tab will take you to information as to where you vote and the ballot options.

Election time… Elections are right around the corner - next Tuesday, November 4.

Are you familiar with all the amendments in this year’s election? Do you know the candidates?

Why should you even vote?

Voting is a way to speak your mind and let your voice be heard! Your vote is your voice. When we vote, we are actually telling elected officials and lawmakers how we feel about education, public safety, social security, health care, and other important issues.

One voice, one vote really does count! Remember: there is power in numbers, and when we vote and get our family members to vote, we can truly make a difference.

If you don’t vote for what you believe in, others will – and you may not like the outcome. Our children are depending on us to represent their voices too! Because our children can’t vote, we have to do it for them. That’s how we make our concerns about schools, safety, housing, and other issues heard.

When we vote, we are

I have said numerous times that being a parent is not an easy job. When they are infants they need so much from us physically because they can not do anything for themselves. We have to change their diapers, feed them, dress them, bathe them, cuddle them, soothe them and tend to any and all other needs they have.

Then as they grow a little older they start learning how to take care of some of their physical needs but they need CONSTANT reminders to do it.

We find ourselves saying over and over again things like, “Did you brush your teeth? Don’t forget to take your shower. Did you put away your clean clothes? Dirty underwear does not go in your dresser, they go in the laundry room. Are you done with your homework? Please pick up your room. Stop arguing. Quit running in the house. Next time you need to ask. Don’t forget to put on clean underwear. That was a quick shower. Are you sure you cleaned your whole body?” Etc. Etc. Etc. As they get older the demand to do things

looking out for our kids, and their futures. Voting changes communities! Do you ever wonder why one neighborhood gets passed over for things it needs, while another seems to get it all? One big reason is voting. When we vote, we can get results that we can actually see. Vote to effect change! It was through elections that we voted in officials who were champions for civil rights. Often times, we voice our concerns to elected officials, but if we aren’t voting, our concerns may not matter at all to them.

It is almost time to vote – November 4 will be here before you know it. Educate yourself on the issues and the candidates and vote!

physically for them changes to more of a demand on us mentally and emotionally. They are trying to discover who they are and knowing right from wrong. They are learning how to make decisions on their own and how they do this a lot of times is by testing and trying us.

I don’t believe they have any idea how much what they do and say affects us and probably never will until they have children of their own. But not only do they learn by testing and trying us but they learn even more by watching us.

My daughter showed me a music video she had taped and the name of the song was Watching You. It really touched on how our children learn by watching us. In the song the artist sings about how his younger son said a four letter word and when he asked him where he heard it his son replies

that he has been watching him and how he wants to grow up and be just like him. Then he sings about how he was praying asking God to help him. In the video it shows how when he was praying his son is peeking around the corner watching him so later that evening before his son went to bed he got down on his knees and started praying. The dad said he prayed to God like he was talking to a friend and when his dad asked him where he learned to pray like that again his son said he had been watching him. He told his dad that he wanted to be just like him when he grew up.

It is so true how our children can learn both positive things and negative things from us. We are not perfect and will never

be but there are things we can change and need to change not only for our own benefit but for the sake of our children. We made a decision that allowed them to be brought into this world and we need to know we have a responsibility to help train them. We need to work the kinks out in our lives and character so we can make more of a positive impact than a negative one. If our children see us being disrespectful to others then there is a good chance they will be. Or if we are cursing at them and around them, we shouldn’t be surprised when we hear some not so nice words coming out of their mouths.

So before we say and do some things I hope all of us parents remember: They are watching us!!!!!

Amendment 3 Resolution During their regular meeting, on Wednesday, October 15, the Paris R-II Board of Education unanimously approved the following resolution regarding Amendment 3 on the November 4 Ballot: Amendment 3: The board members unanimously approved the following Amendment 3 resolution: WHEREAS, Amendment 3 on the November ballot is a state mandate that shifts local control for educational decisions away from parents, teachers, administrators and school boards; and WHEREAS, Amendment 3 is a poorly drafted and deeply flawed proposal that has many unintended consequences for teachers, administrators and school boards; and WHEREAS, Amendment 3 would prevent school boards from hiring, promoting, compensating or dismissing teachers in accordance with board policy; and WHEREAS, Amendment 3 would force taxpayers to pay for additional standardized tests at a time when our public schools remain significantly underfunded by the state; and WHEREAS, Amendment 3 significantly changes teacher evaluations away from a tool to improve teacher performance; Therefore be it RESOLVED, the Paris R-II Board of Education on the 15th day of October, hereby opposes Amendment 3 on the November ballot.

Conservation Agents teach Hunter Education Course to MJH students

Three Missouri Conservation Agents came to the Madison C-3 school and talked to the 7th graders about gun safety.

They explained the different ways to hold a gun and when each way is appropriate. Through weeks of learning about Hunter safety and regulations in Missouri, a skills session, and a 35 question test that will be the deciding factor in if they passed or not. If they passed the test they will recieve their Hunters Safety Card. The ag class does this every year with the 7th grade class.

by Maddie Breid With deer season fast approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to tie in one of my favorite seasons with agriculture. I come from a long line of deer hunters, myself included. At this time of year we anxiously await opening day. In preparation for this momentous occasion we scout for deer. Many a gravel road have I traveled in search of these illusive creatures lately. While on these excursions, I have noticed a lot of corn still standing. This in itself is cause for concern for many hunters.

Deer hunters far and wide pray for the harvest to be done before opening day. Standing corn gives deer an escape cover making them less vulnerable. Not only would this drastically affect the deer harvest but could perpetuate into an even bigger problem. Missouri farmers could see devastation to the next year’s crop as a result of a low deer harvest.

But crops aren’t the only thing affected by a poor deer harvest. Missouri’s economy can be equally distressed. Deer hunters annually spend in excess of $100 million on food, lodging, and equipment. With a low kill number reported, hunters could seek other locations to hunt.

Insurance premiums are yet another thing we could see fluctuation in. Poor harvest means more deer roaming the roads of Missouri. Although Missouri currently ranks 20th in the nation for deer-related motor vehicle accidents, we still see our fair share of claims filed as a result.

The bottom line is….Keep those combines running.

Roy Farrell and Baxter Overfelt lost two games to Jim Hohimer and Paul Nipps while Jake Heathman, Bill Jackson and Neut Farrell, playing for Holliday, got an even break in two games from Penn Brace.

Miss Stella Orton and pupils will give a pie social at Salem school Saturday, Nov. 1. A large crowd is expected.

Miss Loretta Hanna, daughter of Milt Hanna of near Paris, and Geo. Pleas James, son of George James of near Holliday were married in Huntsville. They were accompanied by Estel James and Miss Edna Mull.

John Paul Jones found a cash scholarship prize of $200 awaiting him when he returned to Union Theological Seminary in New York recently.

Rev. J.H. Holland suffered many bruises and a cut on one hand at Paris, Saturday, when the team he was driving became frightened at a tractor and overturned his wagon. The wagon was considerably damaged.

Poles for another rural electric line were distributed Monday. Beginning at Santa Fe the line runs to the Willier place east of Gleason schoolhouse thence north to New Hope and Pleasant Hill churches and communities and on north to the Murphy neighborhood.

W. Smith Jones, east of Holliday, left Wednesday for a trip to the World’s Fair in San Francisco, following which he will go to Honolulu for a visit with his son, Harry Jones.

Hermann Pierceall, 35 years old, 1938 county corn shucking champion, who threw more corn than any other man in the contest last Thursday but placed fourth with 22.10 bushels after deductions for shucks and gleanings had been made.

Five new homes are now being constructed in Paris, the greatest number at any one time in years. Mrs. M.B. Powers is building two for rental purposes, E.W. Rice is building one as a residence, Rufus McCoy is building a tile block house on the old Broughton Milling Co. lot near the covered bridge and Albert Adkisson, is building a tile house south of Crispus Attucks school.

Dr. Barnett delivered a baby girl whose name is Gladys Faye to Mr. and Mrs. Charles James Chapman near Florida on October 20.

Linda Blakey entertained 18 friends Wednesday evening with a line party at the Mainstreet Theatre, afterwards going to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glendi Blakey, where cider and gingerbread were served.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur James and family, north of Paris, was chosen last week as the Missouri State 1964 American Royal Farm Family of Missouri. On Tuesday they attended the American Royal at Kansas City as its guests and were honored and entertained with a special luncheon.

James Clyde Sheerman, University of Missouri College of Agriculture students from Holliday, has recently been named to the Dean’s Honor Roll for scholastic achievement.

Sheerman, now a sophomore, is majoring in PreVeterinary Medicine.

Former President Herbert Hoover, 90, died Tuesday morning just before noon in his New York apartment in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel Towers, where he had lived for many years.

35 Years Oct. 25, 1984 The weatherman cooperated last week as a new queen was selected, alumni honored a parade down main street was held followed by a chili supper and a football game all in conjunction with Paris High School’s 29th Homecoming. At half time of the football game, Michelle Mallory was crowned as the 1984 Homecoming Queen.

The Sunday, October 26 worship hour of the Perry Christian Church began with the choir singing “Revive Us Again”. LouAnn Hetrick and Lois Stuart were door greeters. Nancy Kellstrom brought the message. Brenda Duncan was the pianist. We were happy to have the family of both Nancy and Brenda with us.. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Kierstin Ford and Alisha Eisele. David and Nancy Birch also celebrated a wedding anniversary today.

The walnut gathering will be over this month and plans are made to do it again next October. Trivia night was held Friday with all ages participating and a good time had by all.

Wanda Shoemate has made a quilt for the CWF to raffle. Tickets are $1.00 each or six for $5.00 and are available from any member of the CWF. Drawing will be on December 1. The beautiful quilt will be on display at area shops until then. he Praise Hymn was “Awesome God”. On October 29 Georgia Belshe will have a birthday. Mayor Wasson’s birthday is November 1.

“Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” led to the morning prayer. Concerns were shown for John Asbury, Randy Smith, members of the Seelow family and the Hansen family. Sympathy is for the families of Del Moss and Rex Patrick, Jr. The response was “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”.

The meditation for the Holy Communion was given.

“Break Thou the Bread of Life” was sung before sharing the Lord’s Supper. Arlen Provancha and Greg Harrison were elders. Deacons were Chris Johnson, Anthony Elam, David and Wyatt Lewellen.

Pastor Nancy joined the choir as they sang “I’ve Got Peace Like a River” for the special music.

Alisha Eisele had her children sing “Jesus Loves Me” before telling them of the greatest commandments.

Matthew 22:34-40 was read by Jim Gay for the sermon “Risky Business”. The question asked and answered was “Why are we here? Jesus gave the laws from the Book of Moses but summed them all up with the commandments “Love Your God and Love Your Neighbor”. While it is not easy to follow God’s laws, it is worth the risk.

The invitation hymn “Down at the Cross” was sung.

Nancy accepted Taylor Davis’s confession as she came forward. The benediction was given and the service closed singing “Take the Name of Jesus With You”.

The monthly newsletter, “News from Home” is available at the church. The Harvest dinner will follow the morning service on November 23. Nancy Kellstrom will be the speaker at the Christmas Eve Service. The CWF will be having a cookie exchange for the next meeting December 7. Anyone wanting to submit articles for the newsletter may contact Nancy Seelow or Mary Lee Dye. The CWF is also collecting game prizes for them to deliver to the nursing homes. He spoke on the Gideon mission of spreading the word of God through the written message, The Bible.

The Gideon’s are an International Organization, serving in 195 countries. Mr. Otto spoke of how doors are closing more and more in our country to the distribution of Bibles. The Gideon’s partner with churches to support the purchases of Bibles.

The church was blessed with Jeannie Mitchell and Leslie Rosenkrans reaffirming their church membership.

UMW met on Wed. Oct. 22 with the Annual Agape Meal.

Fall flowers and candles decorated the tables where those attending partook of the fruit, cheese, Cinnamon buns & a sweet drink of Cider, to commemorate the 1972 union of Methodist Women and United Brethren Women as United Methodist Women The Agape Meal became a tradition with the Paris Unit to celebrate the blending each Oct. Lou Callis wrote the first history of the Agape Meal, which continues to be a part of the celebration. The Paris Unit is proud to carry on the mission work of our faithful predecessors.

“Righteous Living” was the title of Pastor Kenny Sharp’s sermon with scripture text taken from 1 Peter 2:11-12 and 3:13-17. The definition of righteous is doing the best we can and giving glory to God. What does it mean to you?

Blessings come out of righteous living such as good health, financial help, etc. We are to stay away from the wrong / bad stuff. If it’s wrong, don’t do it as well as watch the wrong things, read the bad books, etc. Righteous starts with you! Be sure to familiarize yourself especially with verses 13 & 14.

Serving at the Lord’s Table were Charlie Horstmeier, Charlie Thomas, Bill Holmes, Don Wilkerson, Bill Miller and Dan Sharp.

It was a busy weekend at the church starting off with the Salt Saturday youth group meeting and cleaning the fellowship hall Saturday morning for the upcoming Nov 1 Lord’s Acre Supper and Auction. Later that evening the annual hayride and wiener roast was well attended by over a crowd of seventy. Thanks to Charlie Thomas for always providing the hayride for everyone to enjoy. Then following church service Sunday, there was a surprise carry in luncheon in observance of Pastor Appreciation month honoring Pastor Kenny and Joni with their loyal service to our congregation. Don Wilkerson, chairman of the board, presented Pastor Kenny a gift during the church service.

Brian Chase announced plans are being made for the float which will be built for the Paris Christmas parade.

He will need many volunteers to help with it.

A prayer thank you note was read from the Agape House for our continued support in their mission work.

“Like Coming Home” will be the theme of worship this Sunday as Granville Christian observes our annual Memorial Sunday and Thanksgiving Dinner on Sunday, November 2. We will be honoring the memory of Sonny Wilhoit, who passed away this summer. All are welcome to come to worship and share the carry-in dinner with us.

Pastor Fran will be speaking at the Community Thanksgiving Service in Madison Sunday evening, November 23. The church will go caroling November 30.

The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service October 26. Patti Grimmett led the congregation into worship service with, “How Great Thou Art.” Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns and celebrations. The beginning hymn was, “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name.” The responsive reading was from Psalm 75. The chancel choir performed the music special piece, “Revelation Song.”

He gave a pastoral prayer and The Lord’s Prayer.

Pastor John Grimmett read the scripture reading from Matthew 25:1-13. Pastor John Grimmett gave the message entitled, “Ready for Whatever Happens. “ The closing hymn was, “In Christ Alone.” Patti Grimmett led the congregation out of worship service with, “Soon and Very Soon.”

The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold worship service next Sunday, November 2, 2014. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:45 a.m. A sitter is provided during worship service for any children.

The Grace United Methodist Church held worship service Sunday, October 26, which was Youth Sunday which was led by Ashley Peterson. She also gave the message, “Knock, Knock,” based on Revelation 2: 30.

She also gave the Little Sermon, “Keys,” after which the youth handed candy in appreciation of the support of the congregation.

On Sunday, October 26 church services began with the pastor giving an opening prayer. Regular church activities of the week were announced and all were encouraged to attend. Announcements included: a Samaritan’s Purse flier is in the bulletin and the church goal is 25, November 1 at 5 p.m. let’s all go to the Holiday School for a fundraising dinner, November 2 set your clocks back one hour or you may come to Sunday School by mistake, November 8, at 6 p.m. will be Pizza and Movie night at the church, November 9 at 7 p.m., is Madison’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner, on December 14 will be the Christmas Program during morning service, followed by a carry-in dinner, and community caroling at 2 p.m.

The message this week was titled ‘Follow Jesus, not Tradition’ and came from Mark 7:1-23. Every generation is passed down traditions from previous generations. Some traditions are good and bind us to our heritage. Other traditions may have become harmful and need to be discarded.

This is something every generation needs to discern and take action on.

The tradition of washing hands to become clean before God did not come from the Prophets or the Law of Moses.

This idea was brought by the Jewish religious leaders and forced upon the people. Perhaps the tradition was started with good intentions and maybe even solved a problem at the time but now it had usurped the authority of God’s Word. It was taught that you had to wash hands or you could not be clean before God. Jesus told them this is not so.

External religious practices cannot make a person clean before God. Going to church, Bible study, or taking the Lord’s Supper cannot replace the power of God’s Word doing its transformational work on a person’s heart. In verse 15 Jesus even says following the Levitical Law of dietary clean and unclean foods will not make a person clean in God’s eyes. This law does not go away until Jesus’ death.

Talking to the crowd, Jesus tells them to hear and understand. Many people hear Jesus but do not understand Him. Understanding is to know what Jesus says and be able to take His words and know why they are true. Then we are to put them to work in our lives. Those who stay in the crowd benefit from hearing Jesus but never change the traditions in their life that are contrary to the word of God. Talking to His disciples, Jesus explains in more detail the truth of God. Disciples take the time to set at Jesus’ feet and accept His teachings, and that changes their lives. Jeremiah 17:9 says. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jesus had not illusions about the heart of mankind and how to remedy the problem. Man’s traditions cannot change man’s heart and make him clean before God. Only the power of God can do that, and that is only done through Jesus Christ. If you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, examine the traditions handed down to you and determine if they are in line with God’s Word or if they have replace the authority of God’s Word.

Middle Grove Home and School Club News The 33rd annual community Thanksgiving dinner is to be held at Middle Grove C-1 School, seven miles east of Moberly on Route M, on Friday, Nov. 7. A traditional turkey dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. There is no charge for the meal.

The turkey, ham, potatoes, gravy, noodles, rolls, drinks and tableware will be provided by the Home and School Club. Please bring a dessert, vegetable or salad to share The Scholastic Book Fair will be open during the evening in the Title 1 trailer, which is on the east side of the school.

Proceeds from the Book Fair are used to purchase books for our library.

Letter to the Editor Dear Readers: I am writing to encourage each voter to go to the polls on November 4 and vote No on Amendment 3.

At a huge financial cost to the state and, quite probably, local school districts, Amendment 3 mandates a huge increase in standardized testing in for all students.

Most of these tests do not exist, and the tremendous cost of creating these tests will have to come from budget cuts elsewhere or tax increases. In addition, the cost of administering and scoring them each year would have to be covered either by the state or, more likely, by each school district.

More importantly, the increased testing required

by Amendment 3 will take away from valuable time that should be spent on learning and instruction.

In addition, the testing will not accomplish its intended objective—to identify substandard teachers.

No standardized test is able to determine the teaching ability or effectiveness of any individual teacher.

With rare exception, teachers are constantly working to become better at our jobs, and we want all teachers to do an outstanding job. This amendment will not help with either of those.

Because it is an amendment to the state Constitution, when its costs and failures become obvious, the state legislature would have little ability to correct those. It could only be “fixed” with another Constitutional amendment.

Several weeks ago, the original proponents of this amendment stopped their campaign to pass it. The amendment, however, will still appear on the ballot.

Amendment 3, if passed, would continue to move control from the local school district to state bureaucracy. It would do serious harm to state and district budgets. Most importantly, it would hurt rather than help our students. Please vote No on Amendment 3.

From the Desk of Monroe County Assessor Judy Harmon I hope everyone has been spending some time outdoors enjoying this beautiful fall weather.

You may have seen the county Assessor’s car out and about because we have again started full county review for 2015. This is a reminder that the county vehicle will have a sign on the side so you will know who may be at your property.

We may not always need to get out of the vehicle and ask you for information but we don’t want to alarm anyone, hence the sign.

I am always trying to think of ways to work smarter and try new things that might help streamline things, which brings me to something new we are trying this year. This year you will be receiving your 2015 Personal Property Assessment form in the same envelope as your tax bill. In the past you have always received your tax bill from the collector in November and then the first part of January you have been receiving your personal property assessment form.

Many of you come to the courthouse to pay your taxes and then walk down to the assessor’s office to fill out your personal property form, and while you bring this with you which is already printed with your name and number will decrease room for error as well as save our office money and time by not having to print more forms and postage. This will help you as well as our office, you will have less paper to clutter your desk or table, less likely you will forget to fill out the form and return it by the March 1st deadline. As always you should list as much information about your vehicle, etc. so we can find the correct valuation and not overcharge you. If everything will not fit in the provided space you can attach another page if necessary. Remember: when filling out the form it is WHAT YOU OWN/TITLE/LICENSE on or before January 1st.

Our office is always available to help, but a reminder that we are NOT taking the information over the phone as the form should have your or whomever filled out the forms signature on it.

The Paris Coyotes had a near perfect game versus Putnam County in the first round of district play in their 57-8 win. The second half of the game was played in a dense fog.

Kyle Popkes was perfect through the air completing 8 of 8 passes for 258 yards.

Tucker Gruber was almost perfect on the ground rushing 15 times for 243 yards and three scores.

Laine Forrest had a solid statistical game with 82 yards on the ground, with most of that on his tackle dodging 70 yard reverse. He also had a 64 yard reception for a score from Popkes and with seconds left in the half, Popkes tossed a rainbow into the fog that no one knew if it was caught until Laine glided out of the fog into the end zone for his third score of the game to raucous applause from the Coyote faithful.

Forrest finished the game with 188 yards (212 total) of just scoring offense.

Slater Stone had a solid night on the grass. He started his scoring with a nice 54 yard grab from Popkes as he outraced his defenders for the ball and the score. In his second score, Popkes hit him in the flat and it was all Stone as he danced and weaved his way 71 yards to the end zone.

Paris ran up 717 yards of offense (409 on the ground and 258 through the air) versus Putnam County.

Paris Marching Band captures third place...

The Paris Marching Band took 3rd place in the Class A Division at the Culver-Stockton College Homecoming Parade in Canton on October 25. Director Jared Shulse says the adjudicators were generally complimentary of the musical output of the band. This parade wraps up the fall marching season, which Shulse says saw great improvements in musicianship from many members of the band.

In 1st round game at CAC Tournament Madison girls beat Sturgeon 42-17 to improve to 5-0. They were ahead 15-4 after 1 and 25-6 at the half. Mackenzie Dubbert had 21 and Taylor O’Bannon had 12.

In the boys 1st round game our boys lost to Sturgeon 62-26. Their record is now 0-5. They were down 24-5 after 1 and 37-16 at the half. Jimmy Layton had 19 points.

Next game for the boys in the tourney was Tuesday versus Brunswick and the girls played Glasgow on Tuesday.

Was also able to get appropriated and passed one million dollars for vo-tech education. Also, when a constituent contacts me with a concern, I work hard to resolve it for them.

How will you break the gridlock facing politicians today? It is my goal to move the district and state forward for all of our citizens and to work together in Jefferson City, listening to all sides of the issues.

Comments… My first term has been a great experience. One of the best things about it has been the opportunity to develop new relationships and make new friends in the 40th District. As a result of my efforts, I have been endorsed by

the NRA, Missouri Right to Life, National Federation of Independent Businesses, awarded “Friend of Agriculture” by Missouri Farm Bureau, and selected “Legislator of the Year” by Missouri Association of Local Public Health Agencies. The committees I serve on are Economic Development, Emerging Issues in Agriculture, Insurance and Veterans.

I was on transportation committee where I was the ranking Democrat. I was on the Joint Committee Transportation and Appropriations.

What qualifications and strengths do you bring to your election position? I graduated from Troy Buchanan High School in 1967 and was a Regents scholar to NMSU (Truman) at Kirksville graduating in 1971 with a B.S. Sec Ed, Speech Drama, English Major Political Science Minor, M.S. Sed Ed, SIU Edwardsville in 1977. I taught 30 years in public, private and adults schools.

My students were from 12 years old to 80 years old came from rural, small towns, suburbans and urban communities.

What do you want the voters of Monroe County to know about you? I live on the family farm next to Cuivre Rivers State Park.

My great-grandfather bought it in 1895 and it is a University of Missouri Century Farm. We are trying hard to keep it for my grandson. I grew up in 4-H and FFA and won numerous awards. I was an intern for the National 4-H Foundation in Washington D.C. in 1970 where I taught citizenship in the capitol. I have hunted, fished and collected Indian artifacts all my life.

I will protect these rights for all of our family and yours.

How will you break the gridlock facing politicians today? My leadership has always told me to vote my constituency which I have. When a bill is good for the majority of the people no matter which party or member sponsored or endorsed it. I will vote for the bill. I have built a reputation for working across party lines and have earned respect

from both Democrats and Republicans. I know all the current Senators by first name and had served with most of them in the House.

Comments: I wish I could have met all of you in person. It has been a pleasure to meet some of you at the County Fair, parades, Old Threshers, Senior Center, Fall Festival and going door to door.

If you trust me enough to vote for me to be your Senator, I pledge to work hard and be available to you to express your questions and concerns. I may not be able to vote the way you want on every issue, but you will know why I voted and I will never lie to you.

state agencies to serve first as an advisory role for Missourians before they act as regulators. I have heard from an overwhelming amount of small business owners who reference times when various state departments show up and have the mindset that they aren’t leaving until they find something wrong, so they can charge a fine.

This is just wrong, our state departments should be advising our small businesses so that they are more productive and can be more successful. Bad actors should always be punished, but business owners should never live in fear of the state. If we want to have more economic growth and job creation, Missouri needs to act as a true partner by providing helpful guidance and fewer burdens for our entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Another problem I have heard while traveling around the district is that their is a shortage of workers for technical skilled jobs. They simply can’t find local Missourians who have been trained in technical related skills. I will push for new initiatives that encourage businesses, technical schools, and high schools to work together to prepare students for technically advanced skill areas. Their is no reason for many of our children to be leaving Missouri for other opportunities when there are many jobs available, or will be available, right here at home. Plain and simple, we need to make sure Missourians are properly trained for those jobs.

What qualifications and strengths do you bring to your elected position?

I feel that I am the right candidate to become the next State Senator because I truly share the values of the people in this district.

I pledge to be their voice in the Senate, just like I have been the voice for my area in the State House. I have a track record of taking issues that my community has told me are top priorities and then successfully working on them through legislation and other means.

Luckily, Jefferson City is not as bad as Washington, D.C. I have always made sure to be an honest broker when it comes to passing legislation. I tell my fellow legislators the positives and negatives about a bill, and I expect the same from them in return. When we have honest conversations about legislation, gridlock shrinks and I will do my share to continue being an honest broker in the Missouri Senate.

The overall mission of the national project for the American Legion is to make juniors in high school aware of the process of electing individuals for local and state offices.

Each of the students, were elected to a position in government and described the different

activities associated with their positions. Many times each senior stated they highly recommend juniors, boys and girls, to seek sponsorship to attend Boys or Girls State for next June.

Alys Marguerite Mongler 1920-2014

Alys Marguerite Mongler, 94 of Mexico, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Marguerite was born Aug. 6, 1920 in Shelbyville, the daughter of Ella Mae (Holiday) Herbst Baker and William D. Herbst. On Nov. 21, 1936 in Paris, she married Charles E. “Chris” Mongler. He passed away on Mar. 1, 1994.

Mrs. Mongler had lived in Audrain County since early childhood. She helped on the farm, was a 4-H leader for many years, member of Friendly Northerners Extension Club, the King’s Daughters and Midway Christian Church. She had resided at King’s Daughters Home in Mexico the past three years.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Jobe of Hideaway, Texas; one son, Roy “Buddy” Mongler of Mexico; two sisters, Bette (Walter) Sewell of Mexico and Dorothy Wilson of Florissant; three grandchildren, Eddie (Beth) Mongler of Mexico, Alan Kent Jobe of Dallas, Texas and Sheila Rene’ (Brian) Harding of Plano, Texas; two great-grandsons, Kyle and Caleb Harding; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Mrs. Mongler was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles E. Mongler; son-in-law, Joe E. Jobe; daughter-in-law, Shelia Mongler; four brothers, Noble Dean Herbst, Marshall, James and Ed Jr. Baker; and one sister, Bertha Mae Fennewald.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday at Arnold Funeral Home and burial followed at East Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation was Thursday from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Daniel J. Regan Jr. 1944-2014

Dan J. Regan Jr., 70, of Logansport, passed away at 3:10 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2014 in St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born October 24, 1944 in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Dan Sr. and Geraldine (Fisher) Regan. On February 11, 1968, he was married to the Doris (Hendrix) Regan, who survives.

Dan was a graduate of Logansport High School and later graduated Porter Business School in Indianapolis. He worked in material control at Trellerborg.

Dan was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He loved to antique, collect baseball memorabilia, and telling jokes. More than anything in this life, Dan loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Jeff Regan, Eric (Sonya) Regan, and Michael Regan, all of Logansport; two sisters Lori Hiatt of Plainfield, Indiana, Cheryl (Paul) Sharps of Albu-

querque, New Mexico; three grandchildren Beau Atkinson, Jarrett Regan, and Mathias Regan, all of Logansport; two brothers Dave (Nancy) Rentschler, Gene (Margaret) Hendrix of Peru, Indiana; one sister in law Diane Hendrix of Indianapolis, Indiana; several close nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, George Hendrix.

Virgie Marie Redman 1924-2014

Virgie Marie Redman, 90, of Monroe City, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at her home.

She was born February 11, 1924 in Stoutsville, the daughter of Harry Homer and Mary Beatrice Keyes Long. She was a lifelong member of the Stoutsville Baptist Church, Stoutsville. She was a graduate of Stoutsville High School. During her life Virgie worked for Craig Clothing Deluxe Tot Shop and Henderson Produce, all of Monroe City. She also worked on the family farm and raised her children. She was a member of the Monroe City VFW Post 4240. Virgie was a past member of the Rebekah Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, gardening and sewing. She also loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She married Charles Alexander Redman November 20, 1943. He passed away June 8, 1986.

Survivors include two sons: Charles Richard ‘Dick” Redman and wife Carolyn, Beaver Creek, Ohio: David Redman and wife Ruth, Palmyra. Two daughters: Marsha Howser and husband John, Fredericktown and Melinda O’Bryan and husband Lany, Highland, Kansas.

One sister Beulah McCreery, Tuscumbia. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one granddaughter, Dawn Michele Williams. Two brothers, Carl and Elam Long and two sisters, Ethel Dean and Hazel Every.

Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 25 at the Garner Funeral Chapel, Monroe City, Rev. Larry W. Taylor officiated. Burial was in the St. Jude Cemetery, Monroe City. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m.

Friday evening at the Garner Funeral Home Monroe City. Pallbearers were Roger McCreery, Lee McCreery, Lowell Long, Norman Kendrick, Jerry Scobee and Terry Gibbs. Memorials have been suggested to the Stoutsville Baptist Church, Stoutsville. Garner. Funeral Home and Chapel, Monroe City was in charge of arrangements.

COMMUNITY NEWS Jack Campbell to celebrate 80th Birthday, Nov. 1 Obituaries ✝ Sherry Halemeyer 1956-2014

Sherry Halemeyer, age 58 of Ft. Madison and formerly of Paris, passed away at 9:47 a.m., on October 24, 2014 at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital.

She was born on September 8, 1956 to Jules and Ruby Gillum Eoff. On October 4, 1975 she married RandyHalemeyer at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Louisiana. Sherry was a nurse and worked at Pike County Hospital in Louisiana, Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau and also traveled and performed physicals for various insurance companies. She loved to cook. Sherry enjoyed life and making the world a better place especially when it came to children.

Survivors include her husband, Randy Halemeyer of Ft. Madison; a son, James W. Halemeyer of Ft. Madison; two daughters, Laura (Terry) Sprague of Baton Rouge, La. and Nichole M. Halemeyer of Ft. Madison; six grandchildren; a brother, Jules Eoff

A memorial has been established for Shriner’s Children’s Hospital .

Scott and Melissa Brooks, of Centralia, are the proud parents of their third child, first daughter born Saturday, Oct. 4 at 5:19 a.m. at Boone Hospital Center. She weighed 9 pounds 5 ounces and was 21 ½ inches long.

She has been named Myra Kristine. She joins brothers, Travis, 8 and Trenton 5.

Grandparents are Gayle Buie and the late NancyBuie, Edgar and Mary Orth, all of Centralia; Betty Jo Sydenstricker, Mexico; and Mike Brooks, Thompson.

Great grandmother is Elizabeth Buie, of Paris.

Jack Campbell will be observing his 80th birthday on Nov. 1. In his honor the family is hosting an open house to be held at the Monroe City Senior Nutrition Center on Nov. 2, Sunday from 2-4 p.m.

Jack is still working at Hassard Elevator Company, where’s he’s been a devoted employee for over 25 years. Before that he drove a truck for both Potterfield Trucking Companies and has been a farmer since childhood. In fact,

his truck ‘handle’ is “Farmer”. Friends and
