The voters have spoken in Monroe County to the tune of 38.97 percent voter turnout, 2,274 voters versus 5,835 registered voters.

Those voters chose all Republicans for their Federal and state offices. Republicans Tom Schweich (State Auditor); Representative Sam Graves (U.S. Representative District 6); Jeanie Riddle (State Senator District 10); Lindell Shumate (State Representative District 5); and Jim Hansen (State Representative District 40) all won with percentages at or above 70 percent.

MFA LOCAL ANNUAL MEETING NOV. 10

The 2014 Annual Meeting of the Paris MFA Oil Company bulk plant has been scheduled for 11:30 a.m. 1 p.m., on Monday, November 10, Paris Community Center, Paris, according to Bulk Plant Manager Joel Wyrick. Activities at the meeting will include a business report for the 2014 fiscal year, election of delegates for the year to come and lunch. All families are welcome, whether or not they are members of MFA Oil Company.

Commissioner Mike Minor (1,749), Monroe County Clerk Christina Buie (1,752), Circuit Clerk Heather Wheeler (1,736), Recorder Merry Sue Meals (1,749), County Treasurer Rita Blackford Wilkerson (1,684), Prosecuting Attorney Talley Kendrick (1,682), County Collector Anita Dunkle (1,813 all won running unopposed.

For the Constitutional Amendments Monroe County voters voted as follows: Amendment #2 (Prior Criminal

Acts) Yes 1,476; No 682 Amendment #3 (Teacher Evaluations: Yes 422; No 1,801 Amendment #6 (Voting changes): Yes 502; No 1,632 Amendment #10 (Governor use of funding) Yes 1,287; No 862 Madison Road District (160-76) and Madison School Bond (190174) both passed with yes votes.

On Friday, October 31, 2014, Monroe County Prosecutor Talley Kendrick charged Jason Lage, 32, Columbia, and Jessica Munoz, 28, Moberly, each with second degree murder and armed criminal action arising out of the February 19, 2014, shooting death of Zachary Dawson, in Madison.

Lage also faces a charge of tampering with physical evidence and Munoz has an additional charge of hindering prosecution.

The investigation was conducted

by the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Each of their bonds has been set at $1,000,000 (one million) cash only.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department worked in tandem in the investigation.

According to Monroe County Sheriff David Hoffman, Lage was being held in the Callaway County jail but would be moved to the Ran-

dolph County jail. Munoz is in custody at the Randolph County jail.

Prior to the new charges Lage was being held on a $40,000 cash only bond for his charge of tampering with physical evidence while Munoz was being held on a 425,000 cash only bond for her charge of hindering prosecution.

Arraignment for both Lage and Munoz is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18, at 9 a.m., at the Monroe County Courthouse.

Stuck In the Mud (Part 1)

Our perceptions... The election is only a scant two days over and I think that who won is important but not as important as who voted. I am grateful to each and every individual who braved the cold, the inconveniences and made the effort to cast their ballot in this year’s election.

A very special thank you goes out to Monroe County Clerk Sandra Francis and her hard working staff Sharon Thurman and Mallory Dowell. It is through Sandra’s hard work and guidance that elections in Monroe County, from Monroe City to Middle Grove, and from Sante Fe to Stoutsville, and everywhere in between seems to run so smooth and always beyond reproach.

Sandra is one of those unique treasures that the county has that brings experience and routine to what others call chaos. As she passes the mantle to another let’s hope she can bottle some of that experience and wisdom to pass along coupled with her exceptionally trained staff members.

I continue to be amazed by the amount of political advertising, political emails, money spent and media coverage versus the actual amount of voter turnout. That’s definitely

One Thursday morning my four children were outside playing while I was doing some work on the computer.

It was a beautiful day so I was trying to hurry up and gets things done so I could go outside and enjoy the day with them. As I was sitting at the computer I realized I had not been interrupted with any requests, asked any questions, or had any arguments I had to try and settle. Life was goo d.............................until I started to get that feeling. You know that feeling when it is almost too quiet and uneventful in a house with four children.

I decided I better go and check on the kids.

I went outside and started calling for the children. I saw a little head pop out from the tall weeds. I kept calling and calling when another little head appeared from behind the grass. They were my youngest two and they had a look on their face like they were up to something. I told them to come here and they slowly inch by little inch made their way to where I was. I should

a large amount of money for each vote cast.

Listening to every source available you hear concern about the issues concern about the governance - concern about the future - concern about individuals... When it comes right down to it however it seems that there is a only a minority who are willing to take the time and effort to change it.

We yell from the bell towers about this being, “the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave,” and the “Home of Democracy” yet we let a small number of individuals determine those definitions. If another country had the same apathy at the polls pundits would be screaming foul and unfair elections.

We need to rethink our perceptions and goals and exercise our right to vote whether it is for an election chock full of important issues or just one candidate.

MY TURN

have known something was up when I saw the looks on their faces and their dirt covered shoes and legs. I asked them where their older brother and sister were and that is when the day got very interesting.

They told me that they were in the woods by the creek. I was not very happy to hear that because I had told them umpteen times to stay away from the creek. Then after further questioning I found out they were stuck in there and couldn’t get out. Okay, now I have to remember these boys are only five and maybe their perception of stuck is different than mine. I told myself that I was not going to over react but instead I was going to go check it out for myself.

So I started my journey across the field to the back of the property where the woods and creek began. I kept call-

ing legislation. For example my congressman, Mr. Graves, sent out a large mailer listing four things that he faught for me about and worked to prevent from happening. Not one positive mention of a bill he passed or even supported. One of the candidates for State Senator posed with a rifle to show us she was for gun rights.

Problem was that the gun was angled so that any recoil at all would do some serious facial damage.

Please, you don’t have to borrow a gun to show me that you are with me on that issue and please don’t go to Washington or Jefferson City to fight for me. Go there to pass good laws that benefit your constituents and other Americans and Missourians.

Compromise is not a bad work and you don’t have to give up your principles or beliefs to work together from time to time. Effective leaders learn to do so early in their career and they are the ones that get things done for us without all the fighting. Hope we elect some candidates that are willing to at least try it sometime soon.

Dear Sir, I read, with great interest, the op/ed of RJF of Thursday last (Oct. 16).

Several questions come to mind.

First, your “letter’s policy” informs us that your “publisher reserves the right to limit the number of times a single individual’s views are printed.”

As Time Goes By 90 Years November 7, 1924 Walker Carter, near Santa Fe, knows a way to keep down construction costs on a new building. It is to have brother-in-laws like Charley Markley and Harry Story who are willing to do the work for nothing.

The pie supper given

by Miss Stella Orton and pupils at Salem school, Saturday night, was very successful. The proceeds were $37.35.

The John R. Garrett farm, 280 acres east of Santa Fe, was sold to John R. Potts of Iowa last Friday for $100 an acre.

The Paris High School Band will give a minstrel at the Opera House Monday night.

Carl Harley of Paris was given the contract to build the transmission line from Stoutsville to Monroe City on his bid of $5,580.

The Thornton Meat Co. of Paris has bought the grocery stock of A.E. Anderson, bankrupt owner of the Economy Store at Monroe City and will add new stock and conduct the grocery in connection with its meat market at Monroe City.

75 Years November 2, 1939 Miss Clarice Thurston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Thurston of Paris and Delmar Fisher of Paris were married in Moberly, Friday evening Oct. 27.

They were accompanied to Moberly by Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie James. They will make their home in Paris.

In the annual Progressive Club children’s Halloween costume contest, held at the schoolhouse

Monday evening under the direction of Dr. Christman, Bobby and Dick McGlashon were awarded first place for the best homemade costumes, representing Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

At the Santa Fe fall festival last Thursday, a feature was the Tug-O-War between town and country women, with the latter “walking away” with their competitors without any apparent effort.

In a men’s style revue, held at Holliday, Friday evening by the high school, and sponsored by merchants of Holliday, Madison and Paris, Harold Holsheiser won first and Bobbie Cook second in the formal dress division, while Logan Heathman won first and Charles Glascock second in the informal dress division.

County Home Demonstration Agent Geneva Hewitt, Mrs. Sam Rowe and Mrs. Sam Griffith attended Farm and Home Week programs at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Sidney Woods and family moved Monday from the former E.K. Stone place to the Frank W. McAllister property from which Mr. and Mrs. Crocket Smithey recently moved.

50 Years October 29, 1964 The body of Hilburn Wilton Semones, 36, Paris merchant was found Saturday, Oct. 24 in the Mississippi River north of Hannibal, after he had been missing from his home and business at Paris since Sunday. Death was caused by drowning.

the field when I saw my daughter’s head and arms emerging from the four and a half foot weeds.

As she approached me I noticed her shoes and shorts covered with mud.

I asked her where her brother was and she told me he was still in the woods. I asked her why he didn’t come out with her. She then told me he was stuck by the creek.

So I make my way through the weeds to the beginning of the woods all the while calling my son’s name. I hear him saying, “Here I am” but I still can’t make a visual.

Finally I get a glimpse of his head down by the bottom of the creek. I told him he needs to come on and that I am not very happy he went in the creek after I told him not to go in there. Then our conversation went like this: My son: “I can’t get out.”

Me: “What do you mean you can’t get out?”

My son: “I am stuck.”

Me: Come on, you can too get out. You need to get yourself unstuck. (My son likes to over dramatize a lot so I thought he was exaggerating his situation.)

My son: I mean it mom. I can not get out.

Still Fighting For Me

As I voted today and saw the line of people and the voters at my precinct I couldn’t help but wonder what motivates us to turn out year after year. Beside the general proposition that it is our privilege and right to vote in this country to elect our leaders peacefully, what other factors turn us out, rain or shine, to vote?

With the low approval rating of the Congress and general not very good opinion of politicians and politics in general it would not be to thank our Representative or Senator for all they accomplished for us in Washington or to reward our state officials in Jefferson City for their outstanding efforts there.

Nor would we be voting for the candidate of our preferred political party since the advertising of most local candidates doesn’t even mention which party they belong to or are running on as a candidate.

From the political literature and television ads many of the candidates have been fighting for me and I didn’t even know that or why they were fighting instead of pass-

ing my children’s names hoping their heads would soon pop out from behind the trees. I kept walking, kept calling, kept walking, kept calling all the while trying to stay calm and stay positive. I thought at least I am getting some exercise-again trying to be positive. The field seemed to be getting longer and longer and I kept calling and calling.

I went through a variety of emotions on that walk.

First, I was somewhat frustrated with my children because they did not listen to me yet again.

I started thinking about how they have not been listening to me much at all lately. This led me to do a little self reflection on what I can do differently that might produce better listening results.

Then my frustration turned into worry because I started thinking about how they should have heard me by now and came out. Could my younger boys be right and they are stuck in the woods? Step by step I am starting to get less and less positive and more and more worried. Then my mind starts to wander and I start thinking about how they could be hurt somewhere in the woods.

I keep calling their names now with more conviction and intensity. Finally, I got to the back of

National Bank president at Paris who is retiring Saturday, was held at the Mark Twain Café Tuesday evening by employees and directors of the bank.

Ralph D. Parrish, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy D. Parrish of Route 2, Holliday, recently began two weeks active Naval Reserve Training duty as a seaman recruit at the Recruit Training Command, San Diego, Calif.

Mayor F.A. Barnett broke the record of 32 established by him 11 days ago on the Mark Twain Golf course with a 30.

Mr. and Mrs. Vernie Levings and Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Levings spent the weekend in Kansas City. On Saturday they attended the 1st annual Charolais Congress at the Hotel Muehlebach and on Sunday attended the Charolais show at the new American Royal Livestock building and the Royal Charolais sale at the Royal sale pavilion.

A son, their first child, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Shatzer Friday, at Community Hospital. The baby weighed seven pounds six and one-half ounces and has been named Bradley William.

Jack Lott, Vandalia, formerly a butcher in Paris, is moving back to Paris where he will live in a trailer on the Oscar Tawney lot in east Paris.

The Carl Hunt family has moved from the farm north of Victor into a home in Victor.

A party was held on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Smiley in honor of the 12th birthday of their daughter, Janice. At Jefferson City

last week, Dick Noel of the Noel Seed firm of Paris, was elected 2nd vice president of the Missouri Seedsman’s Association, moving up to that position from the secretary. His father, H.P. Noel of Paris is a former president of the organization.

30 Years November 1, 1984 Mrs. Irene Johnston raised a 65 pound watermelon in her garden this summer. The seed for the melon was ordered from Henry Field and under good weather conditions the melon was supposed to grow into the 90 pound range.

A baby shower was given on Sunday, Oct. 21 in honor of Mrs. Roger (Rita) Herron at the PCA building. Hostesses were Melinda Ensor and Connie Gruber.

Bruce Howell, Shirley Legrand and Lee Spratley recently received promotions at Gates Energy Products according to plant manager W.C. Davis. Legrand and Spratley have been with the company since it located in Paris. Legrand has been promoted to Warehouse Leadwire and Shipping supervisor, Howell promoted to Lead Person of the leadwire area and Spratley to Lead Person of the monobloc, single cell, and X battery production line.

More than 150 people turned out Tuesday night for the initial banquet of the Paris chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Held at the Mark Twain Country Club, organizers reported the banquet and auction netted $4,704 that will be turned over to the national Duck’s Unlimited organization.

2014 Monroe County Plat Books Available

Who owns Monroe County? Thousands of people have a piece of it, and they are listed in the new plat book published by the Monroe County Commission with Mapping Solutions. The 2014 book is available for purchase for $40.00 at the Monroe County Clerk’s Office, 300 North Main, Paris, Mo. Premium wall maps and e-books are also available.

The 80 page spiralbound book features township and range maps of Monroe County. These maps include the property boundaries for all rural parcels within the township, the name of the owner and the number of acres

owned. Also, there is a handy landowner index for easy cross referencing.

Additional maps in this new edition include School Districts, Fire Districts, Water Districts and Ambulance Districts. There is also a Government Directory, a Voting Precincts and a Political Townships with Commissioner’s Districts map.

An explanation of the public land survey system is an added bonus. Mapping Solutions is the publisher.

This information is valuable to anyone with a need to know who owns land in Monroe County. Prospective or adjoining property owners, hunters, foresters, timber and petroleum industry personnel, emergency services and many others would be interested in having a copy.

The not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) is taking applications for winter utility assistance from qualifying families and individuals.

The program began Oct. 1 for senior citizens and disabled people and Nov. 3 for everyone else.

Eligibility for energy assistance is based upon income, the number of people per household and the type of heating source.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is distributed through the Missouri Department of Social Services to nonprofit groups such as NECAC. The program assists with paying part of the energy bills of incomequalifying people. Eligible households could receive a minimum of $45 up to a maximum of $450, depending upon the type of heating source.

Applications will be accepted by mail and in person from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at NECAC Service Centers in each county.

“The need is greater than ever and it’s especially strong during the winter months,” said Linda Fritz, NECAC emergency services coordinator. “We urge people to take advantage of the assistance offered by this program,” People who receive a utility shut-off notice also may qualify for assistance through the Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP). Each energy assistance qualifying household can get up to $800 to help prevent disconnection of their utilities.

The programs run through March 31. During the winter heating assistance season last year, NECAC served more than 4,000 households.

Teddy DeOrnellis and Paris R-II Monroe County Health Department School District win MARE awards announces November schedule At the annual Missouri Association of Rural Education (M.A.R.E.) fall conference held at The Country Club Hotel and Spa, Lake Ozark, Sunday through Tuesday, October 26-28, nine state awards were presented.

Teddy DeOrnellis of the Paris R-II School District was recognized as Missouri’s Outstanding Rural Board Member; and the Paris R-II School District of Paris was named Missouri’s Outstanding Rural School District.

Other awards included: Outstanding Rural Education Awards for 20142015 were presented to: Travis Goosen, Otterville R-VI School District as Missouri’s Outstanding Rural Elementary Teacher. Julie Morris, Macks Creek R-V School District as Missouri’s Outstanding Rural Middle School Teacher. Joni Cook, Lakeland R-III School District as Missouri’s Outstanding Rural Secondary Teacher.

Mitch Barnes, Braymer C-4 School District as Missouri’s Outstanding Rural Building Administrator. Houston Bichsel, North Shelby School District as Missouri’s Rural Secondary Student. Kerri Loyd, Ballard R-II School District as Missouri’s Outstanding Rural Support Staff Member. Steve Carvajal of the Salem #80 School District as Missouri’s Outstanding Rural District Administrator.

Each year, M.A.R.E. requests and receives nominations from member districts for individuals and school districts to receive consideration for these awards. Each selected recipient is then honored at the organizations’ annual conference Friday evening banquet.

Existing in Missouri for the last 27 years, the organization is operated by a statewide

elected board and executive director. M.A.R.E. currently consists of 452 members including K-8 and K-12 School Districts, individuals, and Associate Members. The current President Mr. Eric Cooley presented the awards.

Department in Paris on Wednesday, November 19, The health department will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, for Veterans Day, and Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Monroe County Health Department provides services in the home for the homebound patients. The objective of this program is to enable patients who do not require full-time nursing care to remain in their own homes. Care is given under the direction of a physician. Services

include skilled nursing care, personal care, physical therapy, and speech therapy. Medicare, Medicaid, and many other commercial health insurance plans cover services.

Services were held at Madison Christian Church on Sunday, November 2, with 38 members and guests in attendance. Rev. Holmes greeted the congregation and led the announcements. The Lord’s Supper was observed and tithes and offerings were given. Rev. Serving next Sunday: Jackie Sutton and Junior Hulen, Elders; Christion Hulen, Gay Thomas, Debbie Mitchell and Eddy Mitchell, Diaconate. Jackie Sutton, Communion Preparer. Services at Holliday Christian Church on All Saint’s Day were opened with the piano prelude by Sally Blakemore. Reverend David Holmes welcomed all in attendance.

Midway Christian Church will hold its annual Lord’s Acre Supper and auction on November 8, beginning at 4 p.m. A Community Thanksgiving Service will be held on Sunday, November 23, at the Madison Community Center; Granville Christian Church minister, Fran Schnarre, will bring the message. A group from Holliday Church will volunteer at the Central Missouri Food Bank on November 22.

Happy birthday wishes were for: Margaret Olney, Brenda Coffman, Stephanie Johnston, Rodney Coffman, Billy Johnston, Diane Wilson, Callie Bergthold, Claire Bergthold, Johnnie Vanlandingham, Todd Milenius, Devin Vanlandingham, Cason Gates, Liam Dunlap and Erin VanPraag. Special wishes were for Richard Sullins who was 101 years old on October 30th. Anniversary wishes were for George and Willie Harris – 62 years.

The opening hymn, “Tell Me the Old, Old Story” was sung; pastoral prayer and Gloria Patri followed. Prayer concerns were voiced for: Mac Donovan, Angelia Baker, Gene Carter, Eddy Mitchell, Diana Vanlandingham, Richard Boggs, Jane Secoy and Barbara McBride. Praises were given for Rachel Blades being unhurt in a deer/vehicle collision. Johnny and Ann Ragsdale shared the joy of their grandchildren, Hannah and Quin Bartels, hosting a district Student Council meeting for 36 schools and about 900 students and sponsors.

The prayer hymn, “My Jesus, I Love Thee” was sung; singing was followed by pastoral prayer and unison recital of the Lord’s Prayer.

“Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” was sung as elders, Sandy Callison and Diane Wilson, went forward to serve at the Lord’s Table. Diaconate were: Jane Akers and Julann McLaughlin. The doxology closed the communion service.

On October 26th, Phil and Sally Blakemore were joined at church by Greg, Shelly and Micah Blakemore to hear Phil’s account of his Honor Flight trip. Beginning at midnight on October 8th, Phil Blakemore an Air Force Veteran began an approximately 24-hour adventure with the Central Missouri Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. As one who witnessed the unkind reception and humiliation that Vietnam veterans faced upon their return during that conflict, one of Phil’s most remembered parts of the trip were the warm receptions received at the airports during the current trip. He highlighted visits to the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall, Korean Memorial, Arlington Cemetery and changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Air Force Memorial. He then recounted the reception as they arrived back in Central Missouri, including the escort by 262 motorcycles and the friends and family who welcomed them back to Columbia.

“Bragging Rights” was the morning message from Reverend Holmes. Scripture was read from Matthew 23:1-12. God is not interested in how great you are, but how good others are because of you. Become great by being a servant. Some of life’s greatest blessings come from putting others before yourself. The closing hymn, “God Will Take Care of You” was sung and was followed by prayer and singing of “The Spirit Song” to close morning worship.

Following a time of fellowship and for refreshments, Phil Willoughby shared a reading “He’ll Never Ask for Directions” and Diane Wilson read, “Always Swim with a Friend”. From “365 Things God Wants Us to Know”, Phil Blakemore read “In Christ Everything Becomes New”. Jim McMorris led the group in prayer and in study of Acts Chapter 26.

On Sunday evening, the church hosted the quarterly hymn sing. A group from Madison Christian Church sang two special music presentations and Paula Delaney a solo. The attendance banner was awarded to Madison also. Refreshments were served following singing of old and new hymns.

Services are held each Sunday at Holliday Christian Church beginning with worship at 9:30 a.m., followed by Bible Study at 10:30 a.m. All are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Prayer led by Min. Fugate Scripture read by Min. Berry Offering directed by Min. Berry Bishop Long’s message was entitled: “Don’t let your desire for God become confused” Mark 10:35 “Then James and John the sons of Zebedee came to him saying, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

And he said unto them, “what do you want me to do for you.”

They said to him, “grant us that we may sit, one on your right hand and the other on your left, in your glory.”

We hear from these verses desires that are founded from confusion on their part, because they did not really understand the cost of what they could not pay to have that desire granted to them. Jesus proceeds to tell them, you do not know what you are asking, in other word you so confused concerning request, you have no clue to the responsibility to your request, you are confused about your own ability to be able to do, what your are asking of what you desire for me to do. However, Jesus said unto them you do not know what you ask, are you able to drink the cup that I drank and be baptized with the baptism that I baptized with. The said to him, “we are able”, so Jesus said to them “you will indeed drink the cup that I drink and with the baptism that I am baptized with you will be baptized.” But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give, but it for those for whom it is prepared. Hopefully Jesus broke through the confusion and illusion by saying in Mark 10:43 “but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be the first shall be slave of all.” “For even the son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Christ will never be confused about his desire for you and your future.

The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service November 2. The ushers for this weeks service were John Hayhurst and Albert Sinkclear. Patti Grimmett led the congregation into worship service with, “All Hail King Jesus.” Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns and celebrations. The call to worship was, “Come, Now Is the Time to Worship.” The responsive reading was from Psalm 37. The chancel choir performed the music special piece, “These Are the Days of Elijah.”

He gave a pastoral prayer and The Lord’s Prayer.

Pastor John Grimmett read the scripture reading from Matthew 24:36-44. Pastor John Grimmett gave the message entitled, “Behold He Comes. “The closing hymn was, “The Solid Rock.” Patti Grimmett led the congregation out of worship service with, “At the Name of Jesus Every Knee Shall Bow.” The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold worship service next Sunday, November 9. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:45 a.m. A sitter is provided during worship service for any children.

On November 2 church services began with the pastor giving an opening prayer. Regular church activities of the week were announced and all were encouraged to attend. Announcements included: a Samaritan’s Purse boxes are in the foyer and the church goal is 25, remember to vote on November 4, November 8 at 6 p.m. will be Pizza and Movie night at the church, November 9 at 7 p.m. is a Veteran’s Celebration at 3 p.m. in Madison’s Community Center, November 23 at 7 p.m. is a community Thanksgiving worship service at Madison’s Community Center, December 7 will be our Holiday Dinner and Praise to Him will perform, on December 14 will be the Christmas Program during morning service, followed by a carry-in dinner, and community caroling at 2 p.m.

The message this week was titled ‘Loyalty to Christ is All Things’ and came from 2 Corinthians 6:11-7:1.

Loyalty in the world is not mandatory except to self and maybe family (if you like them). The Christian life is a commandment to loyalty to Christ first and all else comes after. Apostle Paul opened his heart to the Corinth church but they did not respond in kind. Paul told them they could not accept the truth of Christ if they did not have an open heart.

Their hearts were closed because they liked the life they had and did not want Christ to change it. They came to church to appease their spiritual needs and liked like the world to appease their worldly desires.

Sounds like much of the church today. Our hearts need to open to Christ so we can become loyal to Christ and be changed by the power of His Holy Spirit residing inside.

Paul says not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. This is not telling us to live like a monk or to avoid lost folks. The problem was false teachers were in the church leading people astray. We have the same problem in the church today. Paul goes through a series of questions to show that believers and false believers have nothing in common. While we are to invite and encourage the lost to come to church and accept Christ, we are not to worship with those who have claimed to accept Christ and blatantly rebel against Christ’s truths; these are called infidels.

Paul is not telling us to become legalistic but to become totally loyal to the Christ and His Word. Those who compromise with Christ’s Word lead others astray and into loyalty to idols. Any twisting or compromising of God’s Word is and idol, created in the mind of man.

Paul tells us to come out and be separate from these people.

This is a call to drop and leave everything of the old life behind (consider as worthless) and walk new with Christ in total loyalty. The only way to leave the old life behind and become totally loyal to Christ is to make the decision to ‘be all in.’ Do not look at what you think you will lose by committing to Christ but instead what you will gain in your loyalty. God’s blessings, power, peace, and love as a child of God. This is the start of the walk in life towards holiness in God. Choose this day where your true loyalty lays, with the world or Christ.

The title Pastor Kenny Sharp’s sermon was “Watch What We Say” with scripture text taken from Matthew 15:1-20. How often do we really think before speaking?

Sometimes we let our emotions cause us to say things we shouldn’t too quickly. Jesus already knows what is in your heart before it is ever spoken - verse 18. He said if you even think it you have already done it. So before you judge someone else’s heart, judge yours first. So if you do say something wrong, confess, repent and move on. The blood of Jesus is what makes a person clean.

He won the war at Calvary for all sinners!

Serving at the Lord’s Table were Wayne Conley, Don Wilkerson, Jimmy Booth, Danny Sharp, Charlie Thomas and Charlie Horstmeier.

Everyone was thanked for helping at the very successful annual Lord’s Acre Supper and Auction. Approximately 290 people were served at the meal.

Thank you notes were read from Pastor Kenny and Joni Sharp and from Ali Rentschler. Happy Birthday was sung by the congregation to Evert Kendrick.

Many friends and family members were remembered during prayer concerns. Praises were given by Tracy Huffman as she excitedly told of her phone call Saturday morning telling her that an anonymous person had purchased her a vehicle and to come and pick it up.

A calendar of events for November and December was handed out to each family present. Be sure to pick up one if you were not at church the past Sunday. Brian Chase and crew have started working on the Christmas float at the Charlie Thomas shed on Rt. D. Volunteers are encouraged to help!

During the morning worship on Sunday, November 2, Ed Putnam gave the invocation and Kathy Miller played an organ prelude.

Jimmie Stewart gave the children’s sermon. He told about a stubborn frog that would not go to the bottom of the pond when he was warned and the pond froze.

He compared this to the Bible story about the house built on sand and a house built on rock. The house on the rock survived the storm and the one on sand was washed away. This is like our lives when we do not put into action the word of God in our lives. Those that listen and do the Word of God are like the house built on a rock and it will not perish.

Mike DeOrnellis provided special music. He played the guitar and sang, “Gathering Flowers for the Master’s Bouquet”.

Reverend Wesley Hammond’s sermon was titled “Entering His Rest” from Hebrews 4: 1-13. We must have faith in God’s promises. God promises to bring his people into circumstances of rest. Through faith in God we can put Him in charge of our life and not fall by following the example of disobedience. The word of God will penetrate our life. Verse 13 says we shall give an account for everything in our life.

“Like Coming Home” was the theme of worship last Sunday as Granville Christian observed our annual Memorial Sunday and Thanksgiving Dinner. We honored the memory of Sonny Wilhoit, who passed away this summer.

Pastor Fran will be speaking at the Community Thanksgiving Service in Madison Sunday evening, November 23.

On Saturday, November 29, we will decorate the church for Christmas, beginning at about 4 p.m. November 30 is the first Sunday in Advent and a fifth Sunday, so we will have worship. The church will also go caroling November 30. The Christmas program will be December 7.

We are filling Operation Christmas Child boxes as gifts for overseas children. Contact Melinda James for more information. The boxes are due back to the church on Sunday, November 16 or before, so that they can be turned in by November 17. We are also planning to adopt a local family for Christmas.

We are still sending care packages to servicemen and women in the combat zones. Please contact Brenda Coffman with names and addresses We have sent about 185 packages over the last several years. We also have cookbooks available, with the proceeds going to Relay for Life.

LOTTIE SUE SCHINDLER ROBERT LEE DEORNELLIS

1962-2014

Robert Lee DeOrnellis, 52 of Center, passed away at his home on Saturday, November 1, 2014 after a lengthy illness.

Robert was born on October 31, 1962 in Moberly, to Jerry and Penny Houchins DeOmellis. He married Esther Hancock on November 7, 1983 and she survives at home. Other survivors include two daughters; Charlisa (Joseph) Callaway of Mexico and Amber (Nick) Ward of Vandalia; one brother, Jerry DeOrnellis of Polo; four sisters, Pamela Engelhard of Marceline, Holly Ross of Perry, Melanie Metcalf of Keytesville and Jamie Sportsman of Gladstone and six grandchildren, Bailee, Kaitlyn, Emily, Shaylyn, Erica and Hanna.

He was preceded in death by his father and one son, Clinton Dean Wilkerson.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4 at Agnew Funeral Home in Paris, with Reverend Dan Peters officiating. Visitation was held from 5-9 p.m. on Monday, November 3 at the funeral home.

Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

1937-2014

Lulu Mae Doten of Paris died at the age of 77 on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014 of a short battle with cancer.

Ms. Doten was born in 1937 She is survived by three children, one grandchild, one sister and two brothers.

Lottie Sue Schindler, 80 of Paris, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at a Columbia Hospital.

Lottie was born on August 25, 1934 in St. Louis, the daughter of Joe and Helen Davis Hughes. She married Douglas Sanderson on December 26, 1950 and he preceded her in death. She, later, married John Schindler on October 8, 1983, in St. Louis and he survives at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico. Other survivors include two sons; Kenneth (Mary) Sanderson of Marietta, Georgia and Jerry (Karen) Sanderson of Peoria, Illinois and six grandchildren, Adam Nickel, Matthew, Danny, Zachary, Jordan and Victoria Sanderson. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Catherine Nickel and a sister, Joanie.

She retired from Arthur Anderson in 1992, where she worked in the accounting department. Lottie and

her husband moved from St. Louis to a farm, in Paris, in 1993. After residing on the farm, they moved to town in 1999.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, November 5, at Agnew Funeral Home, with her sons, Kenneth and Jerry Sanderson officiating. Visitation was held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico.

John Douglas Asbury, 76, Perry, passed away at 12:42 p.m. November 2, 2014 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

He was born April 9, 1938 in Vandalia, the son of John Terrill and Flora Lee Long Asbury.

He was married to Wanda Willene Liter on April 26, 1957 in Perry and she survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two sons, Jeff (Jayne) Asbury of Centralia, and Jay (Beth) Asbury of Perry; one sister, Martha Howald of Center; four grandchildren, Jessica Asbury of Columbia, Kelli (Erik) Anthes of Sturgeon, Sarah (Austin) Simmons of Center, and Jacob (Breinne) Asbury of Perry; and two great grandchildren, Reagan Anthes of Sturgeon, and Sawyer Asbury of Perry.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Asbury

and Flora Lee Asbury Evans.

Mr. Asbury was a lifetime area resident and well known grain farmer and livestock producer. He was a member of the Perry Christian Church and served for several years on the church board. He was a 1956 graduate of Perry High School.

He was a 50 year member and Past Master of the Lick Creek Masonic Lodge #302.

He served on and was past chairman of the Ralls County Soil and Water Conservation District. He served on the local MFA and Perry Rural Fire Department boards. He was instrumental in building the livestock pavilion while serving as chairman of the Ralls County 4-H Fair Board. He and his family received a 100 year award for the years that he, his wife, children and grandchildren had participated in 4-H. Services for Mr. As-

Mary Henderson, age 81, of Bowling Green, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at her residence surrounded by family.

She was born October 4, 1933 in Bowling Green, the daughter of Lee and Darlene Dempsey. She married Milford Henderson on August 17, 1950.

He preceded her in death on April 15, 2000.

Mary lived her entire life in Pike County, except for five years when she lived in Wellsville and owned the Western Auto store. She was a Baptist by faith and attended Mt. Zion. She loved to work, working at Western Auto for 30 years, IGA in the deli department for 13 years and most recently worked at Bankheads Chocolates and Crossroads.

She loved her grandchildren dearly and did anything she could for them. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service was held 11 a.m., Saturday, November 1 at the Mt. Zion Cemetery with Rev. John Birkhead officiating. Memorials may be made to the Pike County Hospice and Mt. Zion Cemetery.

The 6-5 Paris Coyote season ended in their second round district contest versus South Shelby 57-18.

The Coyotes successful winning season came to an end with the team amassing 259 yards of offense (172 passing and 87 rushing) in their 11th game of the season.

The scoring on the ground came from All Lewis and Clark Conference Running Back Tucker Gruber who had scoring runs of 29 and 3 yards while All Conference Quarterback Kyle Popkes hit All Conference Receiver Laine Forrest with a nice rainbow 26 yarder for the other Coyote score.

South Shelby got on the scoreboard first and never trailed as they led 15-6 at the first break and led 36-6 at the half. Forrest had the first quarter score on his hook up with QB Popkes as he outraced the defenders to snare the pass and score. Forrest led the team in receiving with 103 of the team’s 172 passing yards.

Gruber ran for 48 yards for the game and scored third and fourth quarter touchdowns with his runs of 29 and 3 yards respectively. South Shelby added two third quarter scores and a fourth quarter tally for the 57-18 final.

Unanimous All Conference Receiver Slater Stone led all runners with

52 yards on four carries and added 69 yards of receiving real estate. Popkes passed for 141 yards with 11 completions in 24 attempts. Stone was 1 for 2 for 31 yards.

Defensively, All Conference linebacker Briar Hancock led all tacklers with 14 take downs while All Conference Defensive Back Laine Forrest also had double digit in tackles with 10 and added an interception to his stat sheet. All Conference Defensive Back Slater Stone added a 9 tackle game.

In the final round of the CAC tournament, the Madison junior high girls beat Cairo 26-23 in the championship game. At the end of the 1st quarter they were up 6-2, and at halftime they were up 13-8. At the end of the thirdquarter, they were up 21-11.

In the boys consolation final, Cairo beat Madison 51-35. At halftime they were down 19-16.

NECAC installs board officers and directors at annual meeting, Oct. 28

The not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) held its Annual Meeting and Installation of Officers and Directors Dinner on Oct. 28 at the Church of the Nazarene Fellowship Hall in Bowling Green.

NECAC is a 12-county area social service, community health and public housing Community Action Agency that contracts with federal, state and local governments, private businesses and other not-for profit organizations to operate and administer self-sufficiency service programs for the low-income, elderly, youth, disabled and disadvantaged population.

The agency’s Central Administration Offices are located in Bowling Green, with NECAC Service Centers operated in each county.

NECAC is one of 19 non-profit Community Action Agencies in Missouri and part of a national network of 980 agencies.

In his annual report, NECAC President and Chief Executive Officer Don Patrick offered praise to board members, staff and volunteers who helped make 2013-2014 another successful year for serving the disadvantaged despite difficulties.

He also looked to the future.

“As part of NECAC and Community Action, we all, as board members, employees and volunteers, play a vital and valuable role in helping our neighbors in need become selfsufficient to build better lives for themselves,” Patrick said. “After all, that is NECAC and Community Action – people helping people, changing lives.

After being sworn in as chairman of the board, Lyndon Bode of Palmyra offered his remarks.

“I look forward to the next couple of years serving as chairperson and I appreciate the opportunity to lead the cause – and

it is a cause,” Bode said.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got a great staff, we’ve got a great board and we can get a lot of things accomplished over these next couple of years.”

Charles McCann of St. Joseph, former director of the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) with the Missouri Department of Social Services and a Certified Community Action Professional (CCAP) with the National Community Action Partnership, performed the installation ceremony.

Following are the other officers McCann installed for 2014-2015: Vice-Chairman: Fred Vahle of Warrenton, Warren County; Secretary: D. Randall Cone of Louisiana, Pike County; Trustees: Troy Dawkins of Shelbina, Shelby County; John Bracey of Canton, Lewis County; and Leroy Braungardt of Moscow Mills, Lincoln County.

All children went home with a pumpkin from John’s patch. Guests made up a scary tale and kids pitched pennies into a pumpkin for prizes. Cookies, popcorn and punch were served.
