Recently, OATS drivers and riders met with the Monroe County Commissioners to talk about county support and donations. OATS Driver Barbara Bergthold noted that budget cuts has caused five routes to be dropped in the local area. This loss of routes not only reduces places that residents can go to but also puts area businesses in a small districts as the riders no longer visit businesses and purchase items at these establishments. OATS serves more than 32,000 people in Missouri. Last year, OATS provided 1,594,584 one-way trips with a staff of 700.

OATS, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation providing specialized transportation for senior citizens, people with disabilities and the rural general public in 87 Missouri counties. Contrary to their early years, OATS no longer stands for “Older Adults Transportation Service”… their official name now is OATS, Inc. OATS is a public transportation system that is available to everyone, regardless of age, race, gender, color, religion, or national origin, and in fact serves a wide diversity of clientele. OATS, Inc. helps people get to work, doctor appointments, essen-

tial shopping, and other places people need to go. Founded in 1971 by a group of seniors who saw a need for transportation, especially in rural areas, OATS has grown to be one of the largest and most unique systems of its kind in the country. As a public transportation provider, OATS buses traveled 14.8 million miles last year to serve residents in the Show-Me State. The mission of OATS, Inc. is to provide reliable transportation for transportation disadvantaged Missourians so they can live independently in their own communities.
