Senior Center not just for seniors, receives donation from local church

Recently, the Paris United Methodist Church presented the Paris Senior Citizen’s Center and Director Tara Sheffield with a very generous donation of $1,500. The donation will be used in a needy area to assist local senior citizens and promote the center’s mission. What is the Paris Senior Citizen’s Centers? The Paris Senior Center, like any other senior center is a place in a community where seniors can gather for support, socialization, fitness and/ or other services provided for older people. Senior centers are important as many older people live alone and don’t see family members regularly. The resources and activities available at many of today’s senior centers help many older people remain a vital part of their communities. While senior centers vary widely in size and scope of services available, every senior center has regular meetings for members. There may be a small fee required for membership, plus extra fees needed to cover costs for crafts or field trips, but those with a limited income usually receive a discount to make the activities affordable. The main idea behind a senior center is to provide a welcoming environment for all seniors in the community interested in taking part in the group atmosphere. A senior center may be located within a larger community center complex or it may be in a separate building. It may be Donations... Continued on page 5

PTSA Breakfast with Santa -Dec. 6, Chamber Parade, Supper Dec. 4 Saturday, Dec. 6, will be “Breakfast with Santa” from 8-10 a.m., at the Paris Elementary School cafeteria. The annual event features donuts, drinks and pictures with Santa will be available. Breakfast will cost $2 and pictures with Santa will cost $2 each. To visit with Santa is free (you can just come for the visit). Santa’s elves will be busy serving break-

fast and passing out books and goodies to all the little visitors. Those attending will be entered into a drawing for a new bike. On Thursday, Dec. 4, will be the annual Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Paris Area Chamber of Commerce. The theme for this year’s parade is “It’s a Wonderful Life” and prizes will once

again be awarded in two categories - float and non-float with each first place prize being $50 (usually donated by Wheeler Auction and Agnew Funeral Home) and the second place prize being $25 (usually donated by Elk Fork Campground and Shelter Insurance - Russ Thomas). 2014 Battle of the Cuffs between members of Shelby County law enforcement and Monroe County law enforcement will be held at South Shelby High School on Saturday, November 29 at 7 p.m. Members of the law enforcement community from Shelby County and Monroe County will be playing a basketball game with proceeds being donated to Shelby County Neighbors Helping Neighbors and Christmas is Caring in Monroe County. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and children under 5 are free.
