Paris R-II PTSA sponsors annual Breakfast with Santa Dec. 6

On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Paris R-II PTSA will be sponsoring their annual “Breakfast with Santa” from 8-10 a.m., at the Paris Elementary School cafeteria. The annual event features donuts, drinks and pictures with Santa will be available. Breakfast will cost $2 and pictures with Santa will cost $2 each.

To visit with Santa is free (you can just come for the visit).

Santa’s elves will be busy serving breakfast and passing out books and goodies to all the little visitors.

Those attending will be entered into a drawing for a new bike.

On Thursday, December 4, will be the annual Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Paris Area Chamber of Commerce. The theme for this year’s parade is “It’s a Wonderful Life” and prizes will once again be awarded in two categories - float and non-float with each first place prize being $50 (usually donated by Wheeler Auction and Agnew Funeral Home) and the second place prize being $25 (usually donated

by Elk Fork Campground and Shelter Insurance - Russ Thomas). Anyone and everyone are welcome to join in on the fun and participate in the parade.

While enjoying the parade, residents will be able to view the Christmas lights placed throughout the downtown area courtesy of Signature Masonry and Jonesy’s and the decorations placed by the City of Paris. Also, the Monroe County Courthouse will light the

The annual chamber soup/chili supper will be held from 5-7 p.m., at the Paris Senior Citizen’s Center.

There will be a multitude of donated items to win at the silent auction at the supper. The chamber will conduct their silent auction until 7 p.m.

from the Paris Area Chamber of Commerce event will go to Christmas Is Caring.

2014 Gift and Craft Show to be Xi Gamma Rho sorority’s last show The members of the Xi Gamma Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority are giving up their annual Saturday after Thanksgiving gift and craft show after 40 years.

“We are going to miss it,” said Show Chairman Becky Vanlandingham.

Giving… It is that time of year that seems to be one where people are in need. If this is true then isn’t it wonderful that we have people like Phyllis Barton and John Gilmore who lead the charge for Christmas Is Caring. This important program helps feed, clothe and provide toys for children and to people who may have had to do without for the holidays or longer.

Numerous organizations and groups go out of their way to make sure that they hold fundraisers to supplement the Christmas Is Caring budget. The Farm Bureau Young Farmers ran the concession stand at the Xi Gamma Rho Gift and Craft Show with all the proceeds benefiting Christmas Is Caring. The Paris Area Chamber of Commerce has an annual parade, dinner and auction to benefit Christmas Is Caring. The Paris National Bank holds their annual Soup Fundraiser for Christmas Is Caring.

Missouri Regional Bank also held a fundraiser to benefit this worthy cause. Richard and Wanda Boggs routinely hold an annual Christmas party to benefit Christmas Is Caring as the guests each bring presents pre-selected for an individual family. The Paris Baptist Men stand on a chilly street corner to help out. These are some of the small incidents of neighbor helping neighbor throughout our wonderful community. There are many more examples of those helping.

Hard times strike everyone at sometime or another - we do not judge we just help. That is what neighbors, friends and family do. To those that need help - please ask... For those that can help - please do!

What can you do? Of course the simple answer is to support any fundraiser for Christmas Is Caring. Do you collect cans? Phyllis Barton can use them to help defray toy costs. Do you have anything that the chamber can use as a silent auction item?

You can contact Joanne Bonney at the chamber office 660-327-4450. Do you know individuals who could use help? Direct them to the NECAC office or contact Wanda Boggs or Martha Skaggs.

It is the season to remember all things. We remember our family, our faith, our friends and our neighbors.

Remember there will be numerous chances for you to participate in the season of giving and sharing.

May the holiday season find you and yours in good health, prosperous and happy.

MY TURN Time To Talk

The one or two positive things that may result from the shooting incident in Ferguson include the need for a real conversation about race.

Whether or not sufficient numbers of people are willing to participate in a real give and take dialogue at this time remains to be seen.

At some point the continued demonstrations and the raised hands and other tactics of protest will no longer have any impact. Their potential for increased racial harmony or improved relations between racial groups is at best limited to individuals other than African Americans that are in agreement on issues or police tactics toward minorities and related subjects.

The conversations about race may well take a little time to plan and organize. It will not be run by individuals or by government or by newspapers or columnists if it is to be meaningful. It will take a commitment of groups and their members to meet with members of a different race, get to know each other and be willing to listen and consider each others concerns and opinions.

Including our kids and teens on both sides without requiring their attendance might be useful

in the process. So could having at least one common interest or group that could be a place to start.

Church groups, fraternal organizations, veterans or athletic clubs could provide the common thread for beginning the conversation.

Most of us of my generation, no matter where we grew up were taught by example, if not in words, that it was better for all concerned if we socialized, dated and married within our own race and sometimes our own religion. Many of us, even if we later had friends of other races, have held to that upbringing and passed it on to our children and to some extent to theirs.

The best that many of us from both sides can hope for is that we could exclude those we meet and get to know from the generalized negative opinion we grew up with about anyone not the same color as we are. We, most of us at least, love to do for our kids and grandkids.

Maybe this holiday season we can agree to making a start and getting them to help us undo something that we know that we got wrong a long time ago. As Grandma Smallwood used to say “We are too soon old and too late smart.”

90 Years Nov. 28, 1924 License to marry was issued to Mrs. Elizabeth Richmond and Chester Atterbury of Madison.

The fox hound calling contest that has been talked for some months is scheduled for Monday night at the Opera House.

About a dozen callers are already entered and several more are expected.

Prof. W.D. Christian, head of the Teacher Training Department at Paris, and three of the students are making visits to the rural schools this week with Mrs. Mason.

The pie supper given by Miss Ola Mae Wright and her pupils at the Wright school had receipts totaling $30. Ernest Hoover and Russell Eichor were the auctioneers, their pie sales amounting to $22.05.

Mrs. Claus Kucks of near Madison picked ripe strawberries from her patch the first week of November.

Clay Bryan & Son, Madison’s noted horse men, took a string of their horses to Kansas City last week to take part in the American Royal Livestock show.

Robert Fields of the Paris vicinity has been elected to membership in the Alpha Pi Zeta, a national honorary fraternity. Only seniors in University history departments who surpass in scholarship are eligible to this organization.

75 Years Nov. 30, 1939 An old fashioned barn dance will be given in the commodious loft of Fred

Forsyth’s new barn on Highway 24 just east of Madison Thursday night of this week. Many from Paris and vicinity are planning to attend.

L.B. Walton, near Victor told while in Paris Wednesday of what looked like a petrified automobile wheel that had been unearthed by coal diggers in a mine near Perry.

L.E. Dooley, who has sold the fixtures of his Paris grocery store, is closing out his stock of groceries and meats Friday, Saturday and Monday. Dooley will devote his time to his two stores at Stoutsville and Goss.

Elliott Key, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Key of Strother and Miss Neil DeOrnellis of Stoutsville were married at the Perry Catholic Church.

A farewell party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Wyatt, Sunday evening for Russell Cain of Paris, who will on Dec. 1 leave Paris for Hannibal where he has accepted a position with the J.C. Penney store.

The Holliday Odd Fellows will dedicate their new lodge room over the Holsheiser garage on Monday night, Dec. 4.

Members of the Rebekah Lodge will serve a chicken dinner at 50 cents a plate.

The members of the boys and girls basketball squads of the Holliday High School will meet the teams of the Farber School on Friday evening at the Holliday gymnasium.

50 Years Nov. 26, 1964 An 18 point buck was killed by Ronnie Brooks of south of Madison, in the area south of Middle Grove. It may prove to be a record for the entire state so far as points are concerned. He also weighed in the championship class an estimated 310 pounds.

Howard Ramsey, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ramsey of Paris, has completed IBM schooling in St. Louis, graduating 3rd highest in the class.

Their second child and second son was born Sunday at Audrain Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Threlkeld of Centralia, formerly of Paris. He has been named Jay Anthony.

Charley Vaughn, Perry, has moved to Paris and is living with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Vaughn.

Bernard Buckman and his son, Johnnie, attended the Missouri-Kansas football game at Columbia, Saturday. Before the game they were guests at a luncheon given by the MFA Insurance Co. The Buckman agency received the trip for recent performance in the life insurance sales contest.

A record crowd of 91 persons attended the Thanksgiving supper at the Mark Twain Country Club Saturday night.

The Granville switchboard, poles and lines were sold Saturday at Granville by Earl Dry, Ollie Harrison bought the switchboard.

The Mark Tawin Birthplace and Musuem will host an open house Friday, Nov. 30 to celebrate the 149th birthday of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain).

Chuck Herron recently joined the Appeal as a part time employee.

Chuck will be covering all sports taking place at Paris High School and Jr. High. He graduated in 1978 from Paris High School, is a former allconference Paris High School basketball player.

He wrote the sports news for the Appeal during his two years at Jr. High and for all but one year of high school.

A crowd estimated at 1,500 the largest ever, attended the Gift and Craft Show held last Saturday at the Paris High School.

A birthday party honoring the first birthday of Nathan Dale Morgan was held at the home of his parents, Alan and Clarice Morgan on Nov. 15.

Mitchell Keith Williams of Paris, and Kathleen Rae Renfro of Moberly, announce their engagement and approaching marriage. The wedding has been set for Feb. 2, 1985 at the First Baptist Church in Paris.

A son, their first child, was born Sunday at 8:44 p.m. to Mr. and Mrs. George Bright, Jr. of Paris.

The baby named Jordon Andrew was born at the Boone County Hospital and weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces.

Paris Lions Club concluded another successful event during the weekend as members sold 280 five pound sacks of pecans to local customers.

Mike Freels and Joanne Weber were named as students receiving all E’s on their report card for the quarter ending Nov. 15.

The contiguous counties are: Audrain, Buchanan, Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Clark, DeKalb, Marion, Monroe, Pike, Randolph, Schuyler and Scotland.

All counties listed above were designated disaster areas on October 31, 2014, making all qualified farm operators in the designated areas eligible for low interest emergency (EM) loans from FSA, provided eligibility requirements are met.

Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for loans to help cover part of their actual losses. FSA will consider each loan application on its own merits,

taking into account the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability.

Loans for physical losses must be used to replace or repair damage to buildings, fences or to compensate the farmer for losses of basic livestock, stored crops, or supplies on hand, equipment, etc., that was lost due to the disaster. Loans for production losses may also be used to buy feed, seed, fertilizer, livestock or to make payments on real estate or chattel debts.

Generally, loans for production losses cannot be

approved until crops have completed their production cycle or have been harvested.

In order to qualify, a farmer must have suffered a 30 percent loss in production or an actual physical loss that was essential to the successful operation of the farm.

R-II Preschool to host Christmas Program

The Paris R-II Preschool will have a Christmas program this Monday night, December 8th, in the elementary cafeteria. The Program will begin at 6 PM. Preschoolers will sing songs that they have been learning September through December. The public is invited to attend.

The 2014 Annual FFA Barnwarming was held again this year at a secret location. As students arrived they were bussed to Wheeler Auctions Wash Barn for the evening’s festivities. Pink Out Game set for January 20, 2015 The annual Pink Out Game is at Madison this year, on Tuesday, January 20, at 6:00 p.m. Madison’s Austin Thomas and Paris’ Betsy Embree will be coordinating the event again this year. However, this year the Paris girl’s basketball team will be assisting.

As always, the proceeds will go to the Monroe County Cancer Supporters and in turn, directly to Monroe County families dealing with the financial burden resulting from a cancer diagnosis.

The organizers will continue their tradition of a contest between the two schools with the classes with the highest percentage of t-shirt sales receiving a pizza party. The winners will be announced the night of the Pink Out Game.

They have raised over $13,490.75 over the last three years. They sold 696 shirts last year and are hoping to sell more shirts this year and exceed the previous goals!

This year they will be

doing something a little different. You can now pre-order your shirts and pay when you pick them up. They will have pick up times and locations on January 17, 2015. The organizers will keep everyone informed of specific pick up times in the paper and through various other ways. All shirts will need to be paid for prior to pick up. You can still go ahead and pay if you wish but they wanted to give this option due to the Christmas holiday coming prior

to the Pink Out Game.

Also this year, there will be a silent auction and raffle items again the night of the game. Last year they had some great items due to some wonderful donations. If anyone wishes to donate anything for the silent auction/raffle, they can contact either Mary DeOrnellis (573473-6938), Marti Thomas(573-470-6721 or Shari Embree (660-216-5589).

The annual Deer Hunt for disabled individuals November 22 and 23, 2014 was deemed a success. The annual event is sponsored by the United States Corps of Engineers, (USACE), The Northeast Whitetail Unlimited, and Paris Lions Club. There were hundreds of volunteers to assist the 39 hunters. Other sponsors were local individuals, Krigbaum Trailers, Sydenstricker Farm and Lawn, C & R Market, Knight and Hale Game Calls, and General Mills. Sixteen Madison C-3 FFA members Agri-News attend FFA National Convention

So what does a farmer do all winter long? Sit on the couch watching Days of our Lives and Springer? Before I joined FFA I used to think farmers only worked a few months out of the year. Of course now, I know that isn’t true.

Cows still continue to produce milk, chickens still lay eggs, pigs and other animals still have to be tended to. Winter is also a time for planning.

Many farmers attend meetings to learn about the latest technology or legislative issues that could affect the way they farm. Winter is a time for farmers to haul grain to the local elevator. Paperwork to close out the year must be completed in the colder months. Farmers must sit down and plan out the following year. They have to decide what crop to plant as well as what seed variety to order. Seed variety is determined by reviewing the previous year’s yields. And let’s not forget maintenance. Farmers must make sure that their equipment is repaired and ready for the following years use.

Here’s something I bet you hadn’t thought about. Many farmers are still maintaining their overwintered crops. Did you know spinach and lettuce can be grown during the winter? So as you can see, farmers don’t get a break. To be a farmer you must answer the following question, “Are you willing to work 365 days a year”?

The Madison FFA chapter took 16 members to National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. We left October 29 and got back November 1. While we were at National Convention we went to a few sessions and one session was with Nick Vujicic. He had no limbs but he had two toes. He talked about no matter what situation you’re in it will always get better and not to give up. We also went to a Scotty McCreery concert, Louisville Slugger, and a Haunted house. We also had three past FFA members receive their American Degree.

Madison C-3 Preschool Activities Monroe County Health Department Nurse ​ Linda Wilkerson has visited the Madison C-3 ​Pre​-​school​ twice this year. The first time she visited to discuss the importance of tooth brushing. Recently she visited to read a book about fruits and vegetables.

The students then were able to hold and look at various plastic fruits and vegetables. Mrs. Wilkerson asked the students to identify what the item was and if it was a fruit or vegetable. The preschool students look

forward to her visiting again.

The students at the preschool have also been

making their own snacks.

They have made pumpkin pudding and peanut butter on crackers. This

helps with measuring, following directions, and fine motor skills.

The Mark Twain 4-H Club met at 4p.m., on Sunday, November 2, at the Florida Presbyterian Church.

Present at the meeting were 14 members, eight leaders and three guests. Prior to the meeting, trash was picked for our Adopt-A-Highway program on Hwy. 107. The meeting was called to order by President Brett Mason. Pledges were led by Betsy Embree and Britany Williams. Roll call was answered with “What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?” The minutes of the October 5 meeting were read by Makayla Fox, Secretary. Will Crain motioned to approve the minutes and Katelyn Breid seconded the motion. The minutes of October 24 were read by Makayla Fox with a motion to approve made by Britany Williams with a second from Betsy Embree. Brandon Williams gave the Treasurer’s report with a current balance of $810.14. Alex Green made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report with a second from Trentin Minks.

Discussion of old business included a report of October activities: 4-H Sunday, Recognition Night and pumpkin carving. Online enrollment was discussed and it was decided to have an Enrollment Party on Friday, November 7.

In new business, the members discussed when to deliver Thanksgiving decorations to Monroe Manor and Miller residents. Betsy Embree motioned to distribute Thanksgiving decorations on November 7 at 6 p.m. with second from Bobby Higgins. All were in favor. The December meeting will be December 6, and it will be our annual Christmas get-together.

Members need to bring an ornament for the tree, two non-perishable items for the food bank and a covered dish for the meal. All members decided that they wanted to continue playing traveling bingo at the December meeting. On November 30, we will decorate the Christmas tree at the church and make Christmas decorations to provide to Monroe Manor and Miller’s residents. There will also be a Clover Kid meeting on November 30. Members discussed participating in the Christmas Parade with members of the Paris Patriots. Britany Williams motioned to ride on a float with the Paris Patriots, with a second from Taylor Gruber. All were in favor. We will collect food for Christmas is Caring in Paris on December 7 at Dollar General and December 14 at Hickman’s IGA from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. New fundraising ideas were discussed since the members decided not to make pies this year; that discussion was tabled. The Food Pantry would like 6-8 people, ages 11-18, to help on the first Tuesday of the month with loading and unloading; members discussed this request and it was tabled since sports schedules need to be reviewed.

CHURCH NEWS

The first Sunday in Advent was observed at Holliday Christian Church on November 30. Jane Akers called all to worship with the prelude. All were welcomed by Reverend David Holmes.

Collection of Christmas Is Caring items continued with donations of apple juice and fruit cocktail; items for December 7 – spaghetti, sauce and macaroni and cheese. Advent season schedules are available at the rear of the sanctuary. Happy birthday was sung to Sharon Keeler and Lindsey Forbis.

Guy and Sandy Callison went forward to light the first Advent candle. Sandy gave two readings; Guy read scripture from Psalms 37:1-7 and Mark 4:35-39. The congregation was led in prayer by Guy. The congregation stood to sing, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”.

Singing was followed by pastoral prayer and Gloria Patri.

Prayer concerns were expressed for: Molly and Jeff Crain and family, Mac Donovan, Loretta Koch, Gene Carter, Selma Lou Griffith and for the Johnny and Ann Ragsdale family who have been suffering with the flu.

Sympathy was extended to the family of Bruce Pease.

Ronnie and Judy Elsbury shared the joy of their daughter, Angela, and her husband expecting a baby in May. “My Jesus, I Love Thee”, was the prayer hymn sung.

Moments of meditation were observed as the final verse was played; pastoral prayer followed.

As elders, Jerry Ragsdale and Pete Olney, went forward to serve at the Lord’s Table, the communion hymn, “Bread of Heaven”, was sung. Jerry Koch and Gary Wilson served as deacons. The doxology and prayer followed sharing of communion and collection of offerings.

“The Teacher is Away” was the morning message based on scripture from Isaiah 64:1-9 and Mark 13:2437. Reverend Holmes began the message using an illustration of how school children behave when the teacher leaves the room for a few minutes and compared that behavior with ours during the time between Jesus’ first and second comings. God has put each of us in our own classroom to do our work. The message was closed by sharing “All I Ever Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” – i.e., sharing, playing fair, saying “I’m sorry”, cleaning up. The message was closed by Reverend Holmes sharing “Twas the Beginning of Advent.”

The closing hymn, “The Way of the Cross Leads Home”, was sung. Prayer and singing of “The Spirit Song” closed morning worship.

Following a time of fellowship and for refreshments, Jane Akers read “In Christ You Are a Citizen of Heaven” from “365 Things God Wants Us to Know.” Phil Willoughby gave a recitation, “The Preacher and the Bear”. Mendy Blades shared “I Believe in Miracles”. Jim McMorris led the group in study of Romans 1:1-20.

Services are held each Sunday at Holliday Christian Church beginning with worship at 9:30 a.m., followed

by Bible Study at 10:30 a.m. All are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

On November 30 church services began with the pastor giving an opening prayer. Regular church activities of the week were announced and all were encouraged to attend. Announcements included: December 6 is the Associational Hymn Sing at Paris Community Center, dinner is at 6 p.m.; December 7 will be our Holiday Dinner during service and Praise to Him will perform, December 13, at 8:30 a.m., is Men’s Breakfast, and December 14, will be the Christmas Program during morning service, followed by a soup and sandwich lunch, and community caroling at 2 p.m. Advent Services begin today.

The message this week was titled ‘Preparing to Meet Jesus’ and came from Psalm 26. If we have salvation in and through Jesus Christ, why should we have to prepare to meet Him when He returns for us? The short answer is that while we are given the new life in Christ, we often hold on to the sinful nature that was supposed to have died within us. Read what Jeremiah 17:9 says about man’s heart.

We lie to ourselves all the time so we can justify little lies that allow us to live the sins we want to live, while calling Jesus Lord. The only one we can trust to tell us the truth about ourselves is God. God does not lie and He wants the best in life for you; God is on your side. It is a bold move to ask God to judge, examine, test, and control your life. Asking God to control your life takes as much faith as asking Him to save your soul. If you ask God for one you should ask God for the other.

The psalmist says he has separated himself from the ways of the world. Read Romans 12 and see if God wants this from us today. Many Christians do not know how to separate from the world today and need God to lead them out of the worldly kingdom and into Jesus’ kingdom. The psalmist claims innocence in his life.

This is not living a perfect sinless life but a life of consistent sinless life. The psalmist wants to be in the presence of God and fellowship with Him and the absence of sin is necessary to be in the presence of the Holy. He chooses God over sin.

Old Testament writers were reluctant to express love directly to God. By saying I love God’s house, Word, glory, … they were saying they loved God. The psalmist is saying that he loves God and being in God’s presence is more precious than any sin that man, the world, or the devil has to offer. The psalmist has taken on the integrity of God. This is what we are supposed to do when we receive salvation from Jesus Christ, exchange our old sinful integrity for His perfect integrity. We are covered by His blood for the forgiveness of sin and His righteousness becomes our righteousness; living in His integrity, being separate from the world, and living innocent before God shows we have received salvation.

There is but one solid foundation to stand and build upon in this world; his name is Jesus. Everything in this world tries to take you off this foundation, even yourself. Trust God with your life to stay standing on the solid place.

Jeannie Gay, in the children’s moment, said to be ready for Jesus and celebrate the Christ in Christmas every day. 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 was read by Mary Lee Dye. “Advent Is Worth the Wait”, Nancy’s sermon told of Paul’s sharing the good news of the grace of God in Jesus Christ. Advent is the season of waiting.. We should not wait in vein but take advantage with quiet prayer in anticipation of the coming of God’s Son “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” was the invitation hymn. The benediction was given and the service closed singing “Away in a Manger”.

Missions: Lottie Moon offering will be collected through the month of December. Thanksgiving meals at the church were served to about 60 people., Thanks were given to all who helped prepare and serve the meal.

One hundred fifty-nine baskets were prepared and delivered to shut-ins. One hundred nine shoeboxes were sent through the Samaritan’s purse project.

During the morning service Brenda Ensor provided worshipful music throughout the service. Gale Wilkerson gave the invocation. Eleven children, led by Cheryl Gholson participated in the opening hymn, “Go Tell it on the Mountain”. Diane Hickman and Brenda Duncan provided special music singing, “What A Day That Will Be” and “New Kid on the Block”.

Reverend Jimmie Stewart gave the children’s sermon.

He told them about a little boy who saw a sign that said, “Puppies for Sale”. They cost $50.00. The little boy did not have much money but he wanted to see them. One puppy lagged behind because he had a problem with his hip socket. The little boy chose him but the owner tried to discourage him from buying him. The little boy showed him that he had a twisted leg and had to wear braces. He told the man he wanted to pay $.50 a week until he paid for him even though the man offered to give it to him. God loves all of us. We may not be able to do much but God is always there. We need to thank Him. Reverend Wesley Hammond gave the Advent message. Don’t be overwhelmed by Christmas preparations. Have hope in our expectation of Christ. There is much more to our life because of Jesus and what is to come.

The message from God’s Word by Reverend Wesley Hammond was Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd”.

The shepherd provides a quality of living as in verse 1,” The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want”. God created us and sent His son. Jesus will return and we have a promise of heaven. In verse 5, “...my cup runneth over”; and verse 6 “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”. We have to allow this to happen in our life. We must submit ourselves to the Lord, our shepherd.

They shared their faith journey along with a video presentation from Martha’s husband Amos, who was out of town. During the worship hour, Larry and Ronnie James read a skit, and J.C. Shumard presented a sermon based on 1 John 1:5-9. In the afternoon, church members went caroling in Paris and Shelbina nursing homes and assisted living facilities, then returned for a soup supper at the home of Pearl and Dale Ann Magruder.

Real People, Real God is the theme of our worship in December, looking at what life might have been like for those involved in the first Christmas. The children’s Christmas program will be December 7. We are also planning to adopt a local family for Christmas. Donations may be given to Melinda James or Brenda Coffman.

We are still sending care packages to servicemen and women in the combat zones. Please contact Brenda Coffman with names and addresses. The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service November 30. The Wormington family lit the first candle of advent today. Patti Grimmett led the congregation into worship service with, “He Shall Free His Flock.” Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns and celebrations. The call to worship was “Lift Up Your Heads.” The responsive reading was from Isaiah 64. The chancel choir performed the music special piece, “Send Us the Light.”

Pastor John Grimmett gave a pastoral prayer and The Lord’s Prayer. Pastor John Grimmett gave the message entitled, “Name Above All Names. “ The closing hymn was, “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus.” Patti Grimmett led the congregation out of worship service with, “Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light.”

The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold worship service next Sunday, December 7. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:45 a.m. A sitter is provided during worship service for any children.

For those entering the workforce for the first time or after having been out of the workforce for a while, they need to prove they have the skills that employers are wanting. Employers often want to know that you can step in on day one and get the job done.

The Northeast Missouri Workforce Investment Board, located in Paris, has teamed up with Moberly Area Community College and Moberly Area Economic Development in an effort to assist those entering or re-entering the workforce by documenting their skill level.

The Work Keys assessment developed by ACT, who is known for their college entrance exam, is one measure of work place skills that is gaining popularity across the country.

Eighteen of Monroe County’s largest employers in Paris and Monroe City have agreed to recognize the National Career Readiness Certificate as validation of a person’s skill level. The NCRC can be earned upon completion of the Work Keys Assessment through the Missouri Career Center.

“Having a National Career Readiness Certificate is a way for someone searching for a better job to separate themselves from all the other people applying for that same job”, said Brandi Glover, Executive Director of the Northeast Missouri Workforce Investment Board. “It’s a rather simple process to take the assessment through the Missouri Career Center in Columbia, Kirksville or Hannibal.”

The Work Keys assessment looks at the skills an employee needs for better paying jobs in

central Missouri. Skills such as math, reading and locating information are all important to an individual’s ability to move up in the types of jobs they want that pay more.

Students that are currently enrolled in various degree and certificate programs at Moberly Area Community College’s five campuses will also have the opportunity to take the assessment. “These are the skills employers are telling us they need for the types of jobs they have,” said Jo Fey, Dean of Career and Technical Education at MACC. “Having a National Career Readiness Certificate shows employers that you are ready to go to work on day one.”

High schools throughout Monroe County are joining in on the effort to insure that graduates are ready to work after graduation.

Through recently received grant, funds are being made available for high school seniors to take the Work Keys assessment as well.

“Every one of our high schools in this is interested in making this opportunity available for their students,” said Glover. “The first step for a high school student is to contact their guidance counselor for more details.”

A talented workforce has become an issue for employers. “The more we work to bring new companies to the area the more we are being told that having people with the skills the company needs is a concern,” said Corey Mehaffy, President of Moberly Area Economic Development.

“Having a community full of individuals with a National Career Readiness Certificate helps us to retain business in the

community and attract others that are looking for top quality talent.”

Individuals interested in obtaining a National Career Readiness Certificate to improve their

opportunity to be hired for their dream job can do so through the Missouri Career Center office located in Columbia, Kirksville or Hannibal.

These connections can be human connections as well as emotional connections. Decisions of life are made by the connections we have pertaining to who or what is influencing us the most in that given situation.

Contextual connections has to do with intertwine words that pertain to the subject.

Interrelated Connections has to do with something that exist or occurs, to bring to a mutual relationship, so basically, there are two kinds of connections, contextual, intertwine words and interrelated connections to bring the existence of something to a mutual agreement of relationship.

We see this take place in Genesis 1:3-29, in God’s creations, first, he intertwine his word and said Let it be, and the elements of the world instantly came into existence.

Interrelation connection came about when God spoke a word contextually connected, and had interrelationship mutual relation with man from the dust of the earth and became a living soul of mutual relation with God because man was after God’s imagine and his likeness. The moment man disobeyed God his contextual connections continued, but it affected the interrelation connection that man had with God unto this day.

The only solution to restoring the harmony of God’s contextual connection and his interrelations connection with man, is through his son Jesus Christ. “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Lockhart, Holmes lead Lady Coyotes in first win scoring

The Paris Lady Coyotes and the Mark Twain Lady Tigers played fairly even basketball through the first half. Paris led 5-4 at the first break and 17-11 at the half. In the third period, Lady Coyote freshman Drew Lockhart scored two important old fashioned three point plays and Paris ran out to a 14-8 third quarter and a 31-19, Mark Twain scored a 15-12 fourth quarter but the Lady Coyote defense held them off for the 4334 win.

The Lady Coyotes defense held Mark Twain to a single shot almost each time down court as Lockhart, Rentschler and Holmes cleaned the offensive and defensive glass for 21 boards (9 of-

fensive/12 defensive).

Lockhart and sophomore Carmyn Holmes each scored 10 points to lead the team in scoring.

Sophomore Betsy Embree was close on their heels with 9 points while Seniors Brooke Rentschler and Alex Dreckshage hit for 6 points and 5 points respectively. Dreckshage and Britany Williams hit long range shots (three pointers) for the Lady Coyotes.

The Paris Coyotes hung tough with the Mark Twain Tigers in the first half but a third quarter scoring drought found them falling to the home team 59-36.

Paris trailed by a single point at the first break 1211 and a 17-8 Mark Twain second quarter found the Coyotes, in their first varsity game of the season trailing 29-19.

The third quarter saw the Coyotes on the wrong side of the 24-7 quarter and they trailed 53-26.

The final quarter saw the Coyotes outscore Mark Twain 10-6 for the final 59-36.

Lady Panthers better Bevier on both offense and defense

Bradley Pierce drops 21 on Bevier

In the Madison Panther game versus Bevier – Bradley Pierce was a beast under the boards and crashing the glass to the tune of 21 points including two three pointers, one old fashioned and one long range. Pierce was consistent with his scoring, spreading it over all four quarters 7, 3, 4 and 7 points respectively. Zach Rich also hit for double digit points with 10 points on five buckets.

Unfortunately for Madison they ran into a red hot Bevier Wildcat team and Madison fell by 10 points –53-43 in their first varsity game of the season.

Madison trailed 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and were behind 32-17 at the half. Madison outscored Bevier 11-10 in the third period and trailed 42-28 after three quarters.

Madison took the fourth period also with a 15-11 score but their comeback fell short and they lost 5343.

Besides Pierce and Rich, Tyler Bennett hit an old fashioned three pointer muscling his way down the lane for a score, was fouled and nailed the charity toss and added another bucket and two free throws for 7 points. Jacob Wandrey nailed a long range jumper and Austin Freels hit a runner for the Panther scoring.

ELECTION LEGAL MADISON C-3 SCHOOL DISTRICT LEGAL ELECTION NOTICE Qualified applicants for the Madison C-3 Board of Education may file for office during business hours when school is in session in the Superintendent’s Office, 309 Thomas Street, Madison, MO. The Madison Lady Panthers started the new varsity basketball season in style with a 57-20 win over Bevier.

Led by double digit scoring by Hunter Salmons and Niki Sims the Lady Panthers scored early, played shut down defense and coasted to their easy win over Bevier.

The first quarter was all Lady Panthers as Sims hit four short range jumpers, Salmon played tough in the post and had a bucket. Tressa Morris took advantage of great ball movement to can her two first quarter hoops while Maddison Breid teamed with Salmons and Lindsey Hendren to own the paint versus the Lady Wildcats. Breid had a four point first period with an offensive rebound put back and two free throws while Hendren hit a short jumper in the lane. Also hitting a first quarter bucket was Billie Cullom.

Cullom whipped the ball around the perimeter assisting on numerous Lady Panther buckets.

With the Lady Panthers playing a tenacious defense they led 22-4 at the first break.

In second period scoring, Sims and Salmons both hit baskets with Salmons scoring two underneath and Sims hitting a jumper while Hendren and Breid both hit free throw tosses. Madison led 30-8 at the half.

Hunter Salmons asked for the ball in the third quarter and the other Lady Panthers gave it to her to the tune of three baskets including two offensive put backs. Trinity Morris hit a nice 14 footer for her first bucket while sister Tressa Morris showed her range with a long three pointer. Cullom added a runner in the lane while Jenna Stoebe nailed a 12 footer and Breid drove the lane and muscled up a banker off

Obituaries ✝ BRUCE W. PEASE 1955-2014

Bruce W. Pease

Bruce W. Pease, 59 of Paris, Missouri, died Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Pease was born on August 4, 1955 in Vandalia, to Clifford E. and Emma Jo Righter Pease.

He is survived by a son Jared Leland Pease and fiancé Alacia Wallace of Paris. Five step-children, Faith, Brodie, Jamie, Jessica and Josh; five grandchildren, Lauren, Hunter, Jacob, Landon and Gracie Pease; 11 stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Roneita (Ross)

Sinkclair of Paris, Vera (Bill) Reaser, of Mexico; two brothers, Gary (Ronnie Lou) Pease, of Laddonia, Leon (Sally) Pease, of Paris. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joe Pease.

Bruce graduated from Paris R-II High School in 1973. He worked for Jack Simpson doing construction. He then drove an over the road truck for Independent Freightway from coast to coast.

He worked for Harry Huff doing construction in Wellsville. He also, worked for Dyemakers, in Monroe City. He later worked for Chester Bross Construction, where he retired.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 30, at 2 p.m., with Reverend Kevin Keeling officiating. Visitation was held on Sunday, from 12 p.m., until time of service. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, in Paris.

W. Hayhurst, Ernest and Francis Rice, Evelyn Rice, Mary Jean Rice Kinsman, Robin Havens Webb, Gene Havens and Mary R Donnelly.

She received the honor for her faithful work in the church. The Pin represents a give to missions through the United Methodist Women.
