And down it came...

On Sunday afternoon, the building directly south of the Monroe County Courthouse and due east of the Monroe County Appeal building had half of its west wall collapse. The picture above shows the remaining part of the wall that collapsed on Monday. December 15, adding to the bricks already in the street and in the alley APPEAL PHOTO

Sunday night, December 14, was an interesting time in downtown Paris. The west facing wall of a building on East Monroe Street, south of the Monroe County Courthouse, collapsed Sunday afternoon. Half of the wall fell on Sunday and filled the alley and the street with bricks. The other half of the wall fell on Monday, December 15 filling the alley with even more bricks and doing some damage to the Monroe County Appeal building including covering its air conditioner compressor and driving the basement door and an iron grating back into the basement. A temporary gas line had to be installed so that the Appeal building could continue to have

heat. There was no interruption of phone, electricity or Internet at the Appeal. . No one was injured in the falling bricks that filled a third of an alley between the building and the rear of the Monroe County Appeal. The building is currently owned by Paris attorney Floyd Lawson. The building was entirely empty but does house Lawson’s Law Library. According to former Monroe County Appeal Editor Denny Hollingsworth, the late Ed Adams had an insurance business in the structure in the 1970s and 1980s; in the 1960s it housed the late Bill Harley’s tavern. He also noted that the late Bill Hunt-

er tuck-pointed the wall in the 1980s while he was working at the Appeal. According to the Paris Rural Fire Department, Rescue 304, Engine 303, and Truck 309 along with Monroe County Sheriffs Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and City of Paris utilities crews and officials were called out to the building collapse in Paris. The top floor of the story brick structure collapsed into a nearby walkway and street. Crews were on scene approximately 1½ hours checking the structure and stabilizing the remaining structure as well as blocking the structure off. Floyd Lawson has secured an engineer to assess the situation and make recommendations.
