Drive Safe and Arrive Alive! Did you know that the rural death rate from motor vehicle accidents is more than double the urban rate? Many factors play a role in accidents along the rural roadways of Missouri which results in more deaths, according to the December 2014 issue of “Rural Spotlight.” Some attributing factors are curvier roads, higher driving speeds, alcohol, distracted/inattentive drivers, lower seatbelt use, and the lack of health system infrastructure to meet emergency needs. For the time period from 2001 – 2011, the highest death rates were clustered in the rural areas, having a rural death rate of 26.1 per 100,000 residents, which is more than double the urban rate of 12.6 per 100,000 residents. The best way to survive a crash is to prevent it from happening in the first
place by following driving laws, and practicing safe driving habits. This can help ensure that you and your loved ones “Arrive Alive” from every trip. ICE (In Case of Emergency) is a stored number in your phone that instantly identifies the contact paramedics should call if you are in an emergency situation. Store your emergency contact’s number as “ICE.” If you have multiple emergency contacts, enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc. For further information on safe driving, feel free to call Susie at Monroe County Health Department at 660-327-4653.
