The American Red Cross will hold a Blood Drive, at the Paris First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 1-6 p.m. Donating blood is a good way to help others and only takes about an hour.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow...

APPEAL PHOTO The first measurable snow in the local area hit on Saturday night and Sunday, January 31 and February 1. The approximately 3-5 inches of snow blanketed the Monroe County Courthouse and cancelled area schools and made for hazardous driving.

PTSA big help to local schools How can you help the schools? How can you help teachers? How can you make sure that students have all that they need to be successful? The answers to all these questions is easy - join your local Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA and also known as PTA).

“Our local PTSA raises money for added expenditures for the school district,” said PTSA President Dana Billings.

“All the money we raise goes back into the school in some shape or form.”

“I am a PTSA member because you should be involved in your children’s school,” said Billings. “It also allows you to know what is going on and we do many good things with the money we raise.”

Some of the items purchased with PTSA monies include Smartboards in classrooms; school supplies every year, anyone with a child in Kindergarten through sixth grade, $5 a family, special teacher funding requests (above normal classroom expenses), some classroom funding included nap mats, books (Mark Twain nominee books for 1st and 2nd grade); basketball goals that hang from regular goals.

The PTSA recognizes teachers during teacher Appreciation Month.

“We help augment class funding by giving teachers $75 if they attend a couple PTSA events,” said Billings.

“Anyone can join PTSA, we are always

looking for more people.”

“We have several meetings throughout the year,” said Billings. “In March, we will be having a carnival planning meeting.”

According to Billings, they try to fund the educational items needed for classrooms and for the school.

The PTSA sponsors Mommy Movie Night, Daddy Date Night, Carnival, Valentine Dance and other numerous events.

PTSA officers include: President Dana Billings; Vice-President Ashley Kendrick; Secretary and Teacher Representative Tracy Huffman and Treasurer Rita Breid.

PTSA... It was my pleasure recently to interview the Paris R-II PTSA President Dana Billings. She had tons of good ideas and ways that everyone can help our students. It is important that we join groups such as this to better our communities. Joining not only helps the group it helps our youth, our seniors and all of our local residents.

The groups in our area are legion. We have sororities, Lions, Tigers, Bears oh wait maybe not the later two but we do have Lions. We have the Monroe County Cancer Supporters, the Rotarians, and other groups to numerous to name.

Education Reform - More Than Money Alone Tim Wolfe, president of the University is on a tour of Missouri towns. He calls it the “Show Me Value Tour,” pointing out the return that can be had for investing in education. In his tour Mr. Wolfe is telling anyone that will listen that we are not funding education in Missouri, are 44th in higher education funding and 40th in state funding for K-12 schools.

We are also near or at the bottom in growing jobs.

He also debunked the ideas that politicians have been selling for years that lower taxes create prosperity through economic growth and that giveaways like tax credits pay for themselves in growth of the economy. Neither has proven to be accurate.

He favors re-submitting the tobacco tax increase as one way to fund education in Missouri. At the same time others looking at our poor international ranking in student learning see other reasons than just funding. Rather than playing the blame game on poor parenting, lazy students, bad teachers, greedy unions, bureaucrats, or any other local targets, they took a look at several American stu-

dents that went to countries that were ranked high in performance for one year. These students found a much harder curriculum, better prepared and well respected teachers that were well trained and ranked high in their classes. Students were expected to succeed and were competitive with each other. There was no emphasis on sports and the focus was always on training and academic skills.

Neither will the offer of a free two years of Community College to eligible students proposed by President Obama, and declared “dead on arrival” by Congressional leaders, be available to help the situation. So if we continue to spend more on education without changing how we educate our students they will not only not be the smartest students in the world but may not be sufficiently educated and trained to fill the job requirements of American industry nor to help start new businesses in an increasingly competitive economy. We can’t afford to let that happen.

A hope... and a prayer after all for the Paris Coyote Football Program Dear Editor and all readers of the Monroe County Appeal: It is with a heavy heart that I reach out to all PHS alumni, former Paris residents, and lifelong friends of the Forrest family. A tragic event has taken place with unfortunate deep cutting, life changing ramifications for some. While I no longer reside in Paris, I once was proud and still hope to proudly call Paris my ‘hometown’. As a young child growing up in Paris, I had a paper route which included Mrs. Forrest on West Locust Street—what a kind lady she was! I will never forget her or her family- especially Lonnie and Vanessa.

While I am now an active, ordained Deacon and Sunday School Superintendant at Centralia First Baptist Church (and with faults of my own that God is still working overtime on!) let me remind the readership and citizens of Paris of a couple of scriptures from the #1 selling book of all time—The Bible. In John 8:7 John the apostle writes, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone…” So, how does this apply to the recent events surrounding the Paris Youth Football Program? I only pass through Paris every couple of weeks but I have heard and felt the horrible accusations… cold and cutting like a cruel, ravenous demon. Even KHQA has joined in on the attack! (Is that how we want our beloved town to be broadcast or remembered?) Another passage from Matthew 25:45 states, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” Have Continued to page 8

90 Years February 13, 1925 Miss Nelle Williams, daughter of Ethan Williams, and Joe Shearer were married in Paris, Monday by Dr. C.F. Richmond. They will make their home on the groom’s farm four miles southeast of Paris.

The building and grounds of the Holliday Presbyterian Church will be sold at public sale, Monday February 16.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Thompson of Victor, were in Paris, Tuesday, looking for a vacant house. They plan to move to Paris, so Mr. Thompson will be more convenient to his work on the state highways.

W.C. (Brownie) Richards and B.E. Boyer have bought the pool hall owned by Ivan Arnold and Herbert Overfelt, taking possession Monday. They will install two barber chairs and conduct a barber shop in the front part of the hall.

A license to marry was issued Tuesday to Floyd Peak, son of Charley Peak near Perry, and Miss Mabel Cline, daughter of William Cline of near Santa Fe. James Hohimer is announced this week for re-election as city collector. He has served efficiently in the past and will continue to render first class service if called to serve again.

License to marry was issued Saturday to Elkin C. Booth of Santa Fe, son of John Booth and Miss Leta Maud Bright of Stoutsville, daughter of Mat Bright.

Mrs. Ed Ragsdale of Madison spent Saturday to Wednesday as the guest of Clay and Lon Delaney and Marcus Heathman.

75 Years February 8, 1940 Irvin Colborn was appointed this week by the city council as member of the Paris public library board, succeeding Rev. Harold Roberts, who moved to Ottumwa, Iowa.

Miss Flossie Deaver, daughter of the late A.C. Deaver of Paris, and Bradford Barton, son of Sam Barton of Shelbina, were married in Philadelphia Saturday, from which city they went to South Caroline on a honeymoon trip.

Dr. F.A. Barnett, delivered a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buffington near Florida, Sunday. The baby has been named Otis Roy. Cork for insulating the walls in the new refrigeration plant which George Cook is installing in Paris arrived Tuesday and its installation started at once. Cook expects the plant to be in operation soon.

The real estate belonging to the estate of the late Thos. B. Heathman was sold at partition sale in Paris, Monday. The 248 acre farm just east of Granville was bought

Prof. Daniel Watts, vocation agriculture instructor in the Paris High School, one of his students, Harvey Turner, whose litter of hogs was the heaviest produced in Missouri, and possibly in the entire United States, and A.R. Gwynn, Superintendent of Paris school broadcasted Saturday over a nation wide hookup from Station KMOX at St. Louis in connection with a farm program particulars of Turner’s success were given during the broadcast.

Dr. and Mrs. C.O. Browning and their three year old son have moved into an apartment in the home of Mrs. Gran Barton on South Main Street. Dr. Browning is in charge off the watch and jewelry repair and optometry department at the Sweet Jewelry Store.

Mrs. Emma Lechliter has been employed as housekeeper at the Hotel Jefferson and with her daughter, Miss Ruth, will have rooms there.

Walter Weston, near Santa Fe, charged wit holding Bob Sladek up at the point of a gun and the robbing of Bill Overfelt’s station in Paris several weeks ago, is now in jail at Paris.

50 Years February 11, 1965 Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Threlkeld and family have moved from a farm near Centralia back to the home place on the Charles Threlkeld place north of Paris. He will farm in partnership with his uncle.

George Phillips, manager of the Monroe County Service Co. at Paris, is at Kansas City attending an Advanced Fertilizer course being given by the Consumers Cooperative Association, with which the Paris business is affiliated.

Glenn Bryan, bulk manager of the MFA Oil Co. at Paris, and Wilson Uplinger, his assistant, attended the MFA Oil Company annual sales meeting in Columbia Thursday and Friday of last week. Bryan was presented with his five year service pin.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Merrifield of Cincinnati, Ohio announce the engagement of their daughter, Margaret Diane, to Robert Wilkerson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Wilkerson of Paris.

Mr. and Mrs. Danny Tanzey and family are moving this week from their farm north of Florida to the new, modern brick home they have built at the intersection of Highways 15 and 154 south of Paris on part of the former Judge Allen farm.

40th District Representative Capitol Report

It has been another busy week at the Missouri Capitol. Many bills are being heard and debated on the floor of the House as this session progresses. Last week, members came together in bipartisan fashion to reject a proposed pay increase for elected officials. This week the Senate followed our lead and completed the process by approving HCRs 4 & 3 ahead of the February 1 deadline. The end result is that the salary increases for lawmakers and statewide office holders recommended by the Citizens’ Commission on Compensation for Elected Officials will not go into effect. I want to applaud my colleagues in both chambers for joining me in voting against the proposal. It would be a misuse of your tax dollars.

The pace is also picking up with committee work.

As previously mentioned, I was assigned to chair the committee on Health Insurance and join the committees on Insurance (Select), Emerging Issues, Economic Development, and Small Business.

Rep. Jim Hansen attended the “9-12 We the People of Monroe County” meeting on Thursday, Jan. 29. He gave those in attendance an overview of pending bills in the legislature.

Health Insurance held its first meeting this week as an introduction and will hear Representative Holly Rehder’s House Bill 130 next week. It would establish the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Act. Missouri is the only state to lack such a system.

It was also interesting to hear Representative Denny Hoskin’s House Bill 32 in Small Business on Wednesday. The bill modifies the “Big Government Get Off My Back Act” and would redefine

Health Department welcomes three new staff members

Paris to apply for grant for new playground equipment The City of Paris is making an application to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to replace the existing playground equipment at the City Park.

The LWCF is open to local governments and school districts and in recent years the maximum amount awarded per project has been $75,000 with a minimum 55 percent match. The existing playground equipment at the City Park is in poor condition, has been repaired numerous times and does not meet ADA Standards.

The City of Paris is partnering with the Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments (MTRCOG) on this grant application and the estimated total cost of the project is $40,000. The LWCF grant does allow donations from organizations or individuals to be included in the 55% match and any support from the community will greatly assist with funding and will improve the chances to be awarded the grant. Any organization or individual considering making a written pledge to donate for this project will need to submit it to the City Office not later than March 1, 2015. If you have any questions concerning this grant please contact the City Office at 660-327-4334.

A Public Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 19 at 7 p.m., at the Paris City Hall. The purpose of this public meeting is to provide the public an opportunity to provide their input for possible improvements or additional activities which could be conducted at the Paris City Park. Susan (Susie) Deimeke, RN, Martinsburg, (pictured below left) joined the department in late October as a public health/home health nurse. Susie is an experienced nurse with a background in public health, family planning, and Women-Infants-Children (WIC).

She will manage the maternal child health program, the child care health consultation program, serve as Parents-as-Teachers (PAT) educator, and be a resource for the home health department and other clinics.

Stella Schibler, RN, Mexico, joined the department in November as Home Health Supervisor.

Stella is a veteran nurse with a background in home health, nursing home administration, and teaching.

Stella will manage the home health department, providing nursing services to homebound patients who have need for skilled nursing care.

Susie and Stella join Rebecca Dowell, LPN, Rita Arnett, LPN, and Tammy Elliott, CNA, in providing public health services, home health services, school health services, WIC clinics, family planning clinics, Parents-as-Teachers, and other health education services to Monroe County citizens. The health department has flu vaccine available and encourages all citizens to get immunized. CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine even during seasons when drifted viruses are circulating, because vaccination can still prevent some infections and can reduce severe disease that can lead to hospitalization and death. Also, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against three or four influenza viruses and some of these other viruses may circulate later in the season. Flu activity so far this season has been similar to the 2012-2013 flu season, a “moderately severe” flu season.

If one is interested in responding to public health and other community emergencies, the health department’s Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is for you.

MRC volunteers meet eight times each year, training on such topics as sheltering, psychological first aid, mental health first aid, CPR, and emergency dispensing.

New volunteers are accepted at any time. The next MRC training program will be Thursday, February 26, at 6:00 p.m. in the Roegge Room of the Paris Library.

The mission of the health department is to assure that the citizens of the county have the opportunity to receive the highest quality of health care through the development of programs that focus on its citizens’ needs.

We believe the activities performed at the health department can make a significant difference in people’s lives. Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a special supplemental nutrition program which provides services to pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to their 5th birthday based on nutritional risk and income eligibility. The primary services provided are health screening, risk assessment, nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding promotion and referrals to health care. Supplemental food is provided at no cost to participants. Past experience shows that pregnant women who participate in the WIC Program have fewer low birth weight babies, experience fewer infant deaths, see the doctor earlier in pregnancy and eat healthier. WIC clinics are held twice monthly in Paris and twice monthly in Monroe City.

The Heart Truth® is a program currently being taught all over the county to women over the age of 40 years. Terry Ballard, RN, CRNI, is teaching this National Institutes of Health program. The aims are to increase awareness that 1) heart disease is the #1 killer of women, 2) having risk factors can lead to heart disease, disability or death, and 3) to encourage women to talk to their doctors about heart disease risk factors and to take action to prevent or control these risk factors. The next session of The Heart Truth® is scheduled for Wednesday, February 4, at 9:00 a.m. at the Paris Senior Center. Their guest speaker was Belinda Krchelich, from the James E Cary Cancer Center, at Hannibal. She informed the assembled about the many patient opportunities available through the center.

“small businesses” as those consisting of 50 or fewer employees instead of the current 25. It would also provide them an income tax deduction. Struggling small businesses certainly deserve a break. Rep. Hoskin’s legislation would help.

The Missouri Dairy Revitalization Act of 2015, or House Bill 259, is another piece legislation you should know about. First, the bill would create a dairy producer margin insurance premium assistance program for the purpose of assisting dairy producers who participate in the margin protection program that is part of the federal farm bill. The program would pay participating farmers an indemnity when a national benchmark for milk income over feed costs falls below an insured level. The bill would further assist farmers by helping them to pay their premiums for the insurance provided through the federal farm bill.

Second, the legislation would encourage young people to pursue careers in agriculture by creating the Missouri Dairy Scholars Program for eligible students in agriculture-related degree programs who make a commitment to work in Missouri’s agriculture industry. The program would provide up to 80 scholarships annually of $5,000 each to assist with the costs of tuition at a Missouri two-year or four-year college or university.

Finally, House Bill 259 would require the University of Missouri’s Commercial Agriculture Program to conduct a study each year of the dairy industry. The program would then develop a dairy-specific plan for how to grow and enhance the dairy and dairy processing industries in Missouri, and report the results of the study to the Department and all agriculture-related legislative committee chairpersons by January 1 of each year.

The bill requires one more vote in the House and then will move to the Senate.

A tentative schedule of church events for 2015 is available at the rear of the sanctuary. Jane Akers has tickets available for purchase for the February 15 Sweetheart Banquet in Madison. Happy birthday wishes were for Rachel Blades.

The congregation stood to sing the opening hymn, “Bring Them In”. Pastoral prayer and Gloria Patri followed.

Prayer concerns were expressed for: George Harris, Mac Donovan, Boug Francis and the Steven Dailing family who lost their home in a fire.

“Near the Cross” was the prayer hymn sung; pastoral prayer and unison recital of the Lord’s Prayer followed moments of meditation during playing of the final verse.

As the communion hymn, “Take Time to Be Holy” was sung, elders Gary Wilson and Sandy Callison, went forward to serve at the Lord’s Table. Serving as deacons were Jane Akers and Guy Callison. After sharing of communion and offering collection, the doxology was sung.

Scripture from Mark 1:21-28 was referenced for the morning message entitled, “World of Words . . . Authority, Power, Hope and Grace.” The authoritative word of God brought about all creation. Jesus used the authoritative word to bring the good news and to warn sinners to repent. Jesus’ power was evident as He spoke the word; power to bring healing and strength to people in a relationship with Jesus. Through hope, things can be changed and lives made whole by the power and authority of Jesus. Yet, Jesus’ word of GRACE stands out above all the others.

The closing hymn, “God Will Take Care of You”, was followed by prayer and singing of “The Spirit Song” to close morning worship. A time of fellowship and refreshments was enjoyed. “You Are God’s Temple” was read by Jane Akers from “365 Things God Wants Us to Know.” “A Date with the Other Woman” was read by Diane Wilson. Jim shared a prayer poem, “Running the Race with God”, written by Silver, an Indian student from the school in Ashland, Montana. Jim then led the group in study of Romans 4:11-25.

Services begin at 9:30 a.m., each Sunday at Holliday Christian Church, followed by Bible Study at 10:30 a.m.

All are welcome to attend.

On February 1 church services began with the pastor giving an opening prayer. Regular church activities of the week were announced and all were encouraged to attend. Announcements included: Men’s Breakfast on Feb. 8, at 8:30 a.m., and Movie and Pizza Night on Feb. 21, at 6 p.m.

This message this week was titled ‘Heart and Soul of a Congregation’ and came from Acts 4:31-37. The word ‘of ‘in v32 indicates a shared vision of something or someone that binds the people together in a common cause. Jesus Christ is the one who binds, by the power of the Holy Spirit. To have one heart and soul a congregation must be saved by Jesus and walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. Those not walking in the Holy Spirit will bring division in the congregation because they will either be greedy or lazy in their salvation.

Luke says the congregation prayed. We all known we must talk to Jesus. Many teach ‘ACTS’ as a method of prayer but Mt. 26:40-41 applies here in a better manner. Jesus says to “watch and pray.” Christians today are focused on watching what is happening in our society but this watch and pray is a focus on the internal because that is where temptation tries to overtake us.

God gave us the mental ability to observe and understand our own thoughts, motives, and actions.

Many today are focused on the pain of the past and the fear of the future instead of the here and now. Out normal mental state is a mixture of thoughts, feelings, and unconscious mental riffraff that is much like a stream full of driftwood and debris. Instead of floating along with it we need to set quietly on the bank and observe it. What we see will drive us to our knees in front of Jesus. What we will see is our sin. This is the beginning of transformation of life. We cannot transform through church attendance, ritual, or service. Jesus must lead the transformation of life.

If Christians would simply do this one thing the strife within congregations would cease or at least be minimal; this because more of the group would be properly focused on Jesus and not self. Pride would be less and godliness more. This process is the reconciliation of sin with our Creator and the result is the peace of God in your life.

This process will change your priorities in life from selfish and prideful to loving and giving. This is where believers find the daily abundant grace from God. Your message will become the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is because Jesus is the one who saved you and is the only hope for the lost ones you meet.

The most important thing in the world is being right with Jesus Christ. My Bible teaches salvation is free to all who come but lazy, unfocused people will not find it. Set quietly on the bank of the river of life and let Jesus talk to you – today!

“Prayer in Perseverance” was the title of Pastor Kenny Sharp’s sermon with scripture text taken from Philippians 4:6-7. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Prayer is the greatest communication tool between you and God. Prayer helps you to stand up when the world says stay down.

You only fail when you fall and don’t get back up. Don’t use prayer only at emergencies -- do it all of the time!

We are to worship, pray and be thankful. Peace will only come when you pray about it. Do not hesitate to ask others to pray for you. Become a prayer warrior!!

Serving at the Lord’s Table were Dennis Kendrick, Charlie Horstmeier, Bob Conley, Donnie Wilkerson, Bill Miller and Charles Thomas.

A thank you note was read from the Jack Burch family. Happy Birthday was sung to Juanita Willingham.

Many friends and family members were lifted up in prayer for sickness, losing a home with fire, mission work in Haiti and those that had lost loved ones. Praises were listed for the Tommy Fierge family being in church and friends who were now cancer free. Thanks were expressed to Charlie Horstmeier and Bob Conley for cleaning the walks from snow prior to Sunday School.

Susan Kendrick announced some upcoming events for Salt Saturday. Feb. 22 they will have a M-Fuge meeting following church with a carry in meal. Their mission trip this year will be June 8th to Charleston, South Carolina. Feb. 23 there will be an orientation at the Faith Walk Church so they can help at the Food Bank. Sept. 20 will be deadline to collect items for 200 boxes for Festival of Sharing. This is group is open to any youth interested in doing mission work and serving the Lord.

Baptisms were held last week following church service for William Wilson, Russell Elliott, Madison Spires, Maddie Baumbaugh and Lyndsie Baumbaugh.

Everyone is invited to come and join us for Sunday School every Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., followed by Worship service at 10:30 a.m. Bible study is held on Wed night at 6:30 p.m., (carry in meal at 6 p.m.).

After the morning prelude Mark Dowell gave the invocation. Wesley Hammond welcomed all and announced that the Lord’s Supper table would be open to all baptized believers.

Reverend Wesley Hammond’s sermon topic was from Act 1:9-11, titled “Looking Up Into Heaven”. Having a personal relationship with Christ should help and encourage us to make Godly decisions. Jesus is seated on the throne but the day Stephen was stoned he saw Jesus standing.

Romans 8:34, Jesus has been raised and is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us.

Colossians 3:1 says, “Seek what is above. Jesus is seated at the right hand of God. Set aside the sinful life and accept Christ.

Ephesians 2:4, “But because of his great love for us, God who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ...”

We need to lead a life worthy of Christ’s sacrifice.

The young adult and teen class now has a TV and DVD player in the basement so they can use video curriculum. They are currently watching and discussing a series about finding God in difficult times. They meet the first, third and fifth Sundays. On the second and fourth Sundays they are welcome to join the other adult class upstairs. In April, we will start a series on parenting.

We have now sent a total of 185 care packages to servicemen and women in the combat zones since 2002. Please contact Brenda Coffman with names and addresses.

Our spring schedule includes Farmer’s Day on March 15, with lunch. We focus on the joy of living in farm country with its challenges. It is also “Drive Your Tractor to Sunday.” Last year’s tractors received national coverage in the farm press. We will have another Chain of Prayer Day on March 21 where everyone is invited to spend a half hour or hour alone in the sanctuary lifting prayer concerns to God. Our Easter schedule includes Palm Sunday worship on March 29, Maundy Thursday services on April 2, at 7 p.m. and Easter Sunday worship on April 5.

Come spend an hour in worship and communion with the One who continuously remakes you, saves you and loves you, at 11 a.m. on the first, third and fifth Sundays (February 1 and 15, March 1, 15 and 29).

Sunday School is held at 10 a.m. every Sunday and communion follows on the weeks when we do not have worship services.

The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service February 1. This Sunday was communion Sunday. The ushers for this weeks service were Shonda and Randell Galloway. Patti Grimmett led the congregation into worship service with, “Live Divine, all loves excelling.”

Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns and celebrations and led the congregation in a unison prayer of confession. The responsive reading was from Psalm 103.

The scripture reading was from James 2. Pastor John Grimmett delivered the message, “Creed and Deeds.”

The closing hymn was, “Lord I want to be a Christian.”

Patti Grimmett led the congregation out of worship service with, “Shine Jesus Shine.”

The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold worship service next Sunday, February 8. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:45 a.m.

A sitter is provided during worship service for any children.

Services were held at Madison Christian Church on Sunday, February 1, with 27 members and guests in attendance. Rev. Holmes greeted the congregation and led the announcements. Joys and concerns were expressed before Rev. Holmes led the congregation in prayer, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The Adult Choir sang “People Need the Lord” for special music. The Lord’s Supper was observed and tithes and offerings were given. Rev. Holmes delivered the morning message “Jesus Speaks with Authority” using March 1:2128 as his text. All were invited to Christian Discipleship.

Faith is never easy, those who do not have faith cannot see past the physical world around them. They are limited by their temporary circumstances and are blind to what God is doing, but those who open their spiritual eyes can see the spiritual realities, which transcend this world. The more we are convinced of the reality of an all-good, all powerful God, the more our trust will grow and the less we will be overwhelmed by doubts and temptations. When it comes to faith the world scoffs, faith to them at best seems like a great waste at worst it seems almost suicidal to people who do not want to give up all the pleasures of this world for

ROBERT “BOB” GRIFFITH 1932-2015

Robert “Bob” Griffith, 82, of Eldon, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Lakeside Meadows in Osage Beach. On February 27, 1932 he was born in Paris, the son of the late Roy F. and Delia Fay (Hobson) Griffith. On September 3, 1950 in Paris, he was united in marriage to Imogene (Miller) Griffith who survives of the home.

Other survivor’s, sons, Robert Griffith, Jr. (Paula) of Peoria, Arizona; Jerry P. Griffith of Lake Ozark, five Grandchildren, Julie Clay of Moberly; Ryan Griffith (Amber) of West Valley City, Utah; Randon Griffith (Ashlie) of Macon; Tyler Griffith of Columbia; Chelsea Helton (Steven) of Eldon, three step-grandchildren, Chuck Kitchen (Ginger) of Neosho; David Fusselman of Glendale, Arizona; Jennifer Rodriguez (Ricky) of Phoenix, Arizona; seven great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren Bob was a member of the Paris Jaycees, the Paris Lion’s Club, Mark Twain’s Old Thresher Association. He was owner/ operator of Whites Delite, ABC Mobile Homes and Sav-A-Lot Grocery all in Paris. He retired in 1987 and moved to Lake Ozark.

Visitation was Monday, February 2, from 5-7 p.m., at Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon. Graveside Service were Tuesday, February 3, at 2 p.m., at Sunset Hills Cemetery, in Madison.

I’d like to thank all of the teachers, administrators, and staff here at Madison C-3 that work just as hard to help not only these students but all of our students. I’d especially like to thank my assistant coach Lexa Brooks. For the past three years she’s been to every summer event we’ve had to get these girls up to speed on the softball field, she’s been a great role model, and is someone the girls really trust and can be open with.”

GEORGE RICE 1926-2015

George Rice 88, of Paris, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015 at the Boone Hospital, in Columbia.

George was born on July 22, 1926 to the late Earnest and Frances Shale Rice. He was married to Evelyn Vidas Rice who preceded him in death on September 16, 2013. He is also preceded in death by his sister Mary Jean Kensman. He is survived by his brother-in-law Richard Vidas and wife Fran Vidas of Troy, nieces Linda Vidas Sewell and husband John of Courneil Bluff, Iowa, nephew Rick Vidas and wife Donna of Eureka, and Steve Vidas of Washington.

George was a lifelong resident of Paris, and a member of the Paris Methodist church for forty years. He was a 2nd generation car dealer that started in the 1930’s.

George was a member of the American Legion Club Post 221, the Paris

Legion Lodge #19 AF and AM and the Paris Optimist Club. He was a charter member of the Mark Twain Country Club.

George was a World War II Veteran and served in the Philippines.

George will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Private graveside services were held on Tuesday, February 3, at the Walnut Grove Cemetery, in Paris.

Wedding Dresses - Why they are white and other wedding lore Brides have always worn white, right? Not so. In ancient times brides wore bright colored wedding dresses to signify their joy. White for western brides didn’t become fashionable until Queen Victoria wore it at her wedding to signify her status. White dresses never did signify purity until the Christian churches put that label on them. So feel free to add a little color to your wedding outfit.

Wedding bands made of hemp or braided grass were the earliest rings.

They eventually fell out of favor, replaced by durable metals until about the 15th century when diamonds came upon the scene, to signify a valuable strong commitment, a tradition which most modern couples choose to keep.

When grooms would “capture” their brides and or were afraid of evil spirits they would cover the woman’s head to keep her from being recognized.

Bridesmaids’ dresses are all identical. Where did this practice originate? Long ago the brides friends wore the same exact outfit as the bride to confuse the evil spirits who wanted to destroy her happiness. It also helped to prevent the bride from being kidnapped by a rival suitor.

The receiving line developed from the ancient belief, that on their wedding day, the bride and groom brought good luck to everyone they touched.

Modern couples often pass on this and prefer to “make the rounds” greeting their guests during the wedding dinner.

In ancient Rome a marriage was not legal

until the couple kissed.

The kiss was considered a legal bond necessary to seal all contracts. This is thought to be the origin of the present day custom of banging a spoon against a glass until the newlyweds kiss.

Will you have your dad walk you down the aisle? Do you know where this custom originated?

Long ago, a woman was considered her father’s property until she married, and their she was her husband’s property. At the wedding the Dad would literally “give her away,” transferring ownership to the husband. Now brides

often have their fathers or both parents accompany them, and have the officiant ask “Who supports this couple in marriage?”

The parents answer “We do.”

There is no need to explain what the honeymoon is. But do you know where the term originated? In ancient Ireland, when a couple married, the parents would make sure they had a supply of a drink made from fermented honey called mead, that would last for a full cycle of the moon. It was believed they would be blessed with a son within a year.

Back when a bride could be forced by a captor to marry, the groom

would have to carry her against her will into her new home. The Romans thought that it was bad luck, for a bride to trip over the threshold so to prevent that, the groom carried her.

During the Middle Ages the length of a bride’s train indicated her rank in court. The longer her train the closer she was to the King and Queen and the greater her influence with them.

During the 18th and 19th centuries gloves were the traditional wedding favor for guests.

In many cultures including Hindu, Egyptian and Celtic, the hand of a bride and groom are tied together as a symbol of their new bond and commitment to the marriage.

African-American weddings often hold to the tradition of “jumping the broom”. Slaves in the United States were not allowed to marry, so they would exhibit their love by jumping over a broom to the beat of drums. It now is symbol of the couple’s intention to set up a home together.

Japanese couples become man and wife when they take the first of nine sips of sake. In Irish tradition once the bride and groom were in the church, the guests would lock the doors to make sure the groom couldn’t back out.

It was also important that a male not a female be the first to wish joy to the newly married bride.

There is an old English rhyme that brides have been obeying for years.

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” The actual rhyme also included this line “and a sixpence in your shoe”. Relatives usually offer the something old, like great grandmother’s antique cameo, or your mom’s gown. These items provide continuity from generation to generation.

The “new” symbolizes home for the future and can include your gown or veil , a strand of pearls, bouquet of silk flowers, or a new coin to tuck in your shoe. The choices here are endless.

Borrowed happiness is symbolized by the something borrowed. It should be something that brought happiness to the owner. Some possibilities are your mother in law’s ruby brooch, your dad’s silk handkerchief, or your parents’ wedding song.

The blue something symbolizes fidelity, love and good fortune. Often, there is a blue ribbon on the garter. Other ideas are blue flowers, delphiniums, or irises in your bouquet, sapphire earrings and necklace, or even your lingerie.

You may want to consider incorporating some of these ideas into your wedding plans. There are books and magazines that you can search for traditions from your own ethnic or religious traditions.

Perhaps you like something you’ve heard about from another culture that you can adapt for your wedding. If you will have children at your reception you might want to borrow the Puerto Rican idea of pinatas, even the adults might enjoy that one.

Your makeup is an important part of your overall look, however, it should enhance you, not make you feel like you’re wearing a mask! Since you’ll be photographed and/or videotaped, the camera lights are a specific concern. These lights tend to make the skin look paler and shinier than it really is, so makeup helps compensate for this. Here are some tips: Use an oil-free foundation (unless your skin is very dry) that is as close to your own skin tone as possible. Test by applying a bit to the jaw area, then look outside in natural sunlight to see if the color blends in. Foundation coverage ranges from sheer to heavy; buy

according to how eventoned your bare skin is.

Undereye concealer covers undereye circles, blemishes, etc. It should be a shade lighter than your foundation.

Powder- this is important! Set your foundation with a loose translucent powder. Then, have an oil-free pressed powder compact with you for touching up a shiny nose, forehead, etc.

Eyes- you can’t go wrong with soft earthtone eyeshadows. Use a light, off-white shade to highlight the browbone, and perhaps a taupe or peach on the lid. Blend well! Wedding mistakes - ways to avoid common pitfalls 10 Wedding Mistakes To Avoid The following tips are ways to avoid some common wedding pitfalls.

10. Don’t Rock the Cash Bar - When it comes to alcohol at your reception, what you serve is entirely up to you. Whether you choose to serve a full bar, limited cocktails, Beer and Wine, or no alcohol at all will be based on various factors including budget.

The one option that is not recommended is a Cash Bar. Your guests should be gracious enough to accept what is being offered to them. If however a guest feels the need for a drink selection that is not offered, chances are that he or she will be resourceful enough to find it.

Also, request that bar-

tenders not put out tip jars. If you are hosting the bar, tell your catering contact that you are happy to pay gratuity to the bartender(s) but that you do not want your guests to feel obligated to tip.

9. Go flat! A huge number of brides give feedback that they wish they had worn flats, having kicked off their heels during the reception. As a bride you can expect to be standing for 8-12 hours on your wedding day. Be sure to break in your shoes well in advance. Even when wearing flats, unexpected blisters can form after a few hours on your feet.

8. Have a little faith.

D.J.’s are perhaps the wedding vendor most micromanaged by couples. Too many song requests may actually impede the flow of your party. You hire your D.J. to judge when to play what music. You wouldn’t instruct your Caterer step by step on how to prepare food, or your Photographer on what angles and lenses to use. Limit your D.J. request list to a few favorites and a do-notplay list of only the songs you cannot stand. Do not get carried away and have some trust.

7. Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize. What really matters most to you, the photographer, the music and dancing, the food and wine, the decorations, or being able to accommodate a large guest list? Put your money towards what you care about. You will have regrets if you skimp on what really counts.

When you, the Bride and Groom are not footing the bill yourselves however, you may have to forfeit some financial decisionmaking. If this is the case you will need to compromise on certain priorities or if you really want that pricey photographer offer to pay for one yourself.

6. Bibbity Bobbity Boo. Wedding Dress shops are notorious for having your dress shipped in at the last minute. Think about it, if you owned a Wedding Dress Boutique you wouldn’t want every brides dress held at your shop for nine+ months before their weddings. Schedule your first fitting well before your wedding. Your final dress fitting should be no less than 1 week prior to your wedding so that alterations can still be made.

Tuxedo rentals for all attendants must be tried on, that includes Dad. Whether the Tailor seemed to take precise measurements or not, too many men still show up at weddings with high waters

or baggy tuxes.

5. Don’t hit the road, Jack. Your wedding day is one of the biggest, most important days of your life. You will be exhausted and a bit disorderly the following day. Going away is the last thing you will want to worry about. Wait at least a couple of days before venturing on your honeymoon. Your wits will thank you.

4. Last night of single life. DO NOT hold your Bachelor or Bachelorette party the night before your wedding! This may seem like a no-brainer but many brides and grooms still practice the archaic ritual of drinking all night on that fatal evening. It is simply not worth it, as the Bride/Groom and your attendants will no doubt feel tired, look tired, have a hangover, or worse be sick walking down the aisle. If necessary, request that any out of town attendants arrive a day earlier to help you to prepare and celebrate a different night.

3. No Guidance. With no Director there are too many details left to too many people at your ceremony. Having a Wedding Coordinator allows for one person to coordinate your wedding party processional, music, minister, seating guests and to resolve any unexpected last minute complications. A Coordinator will ease the stress level of everyone, including you, tremendously on your wedding day. So if your location does not include a Wedding Day Coordinator who also directs your rehearsal, hire your own. A Wedding Coordinator may be much more affordable than you think.

2. Stretching yourself too thin. As the bride you will make everyone around you crazy by waiting until the last minute in planning and finalizing details. If you have a hard

time planning and prioritizing on your own then get help. You don’t want to be remembered as “one of those brides” that put everything off and then expected her friends and family to pick up the pieces, do you?

Do not commit yourself to social events the day before your wedding. This day is meant for you to wrap up loose ends, beautify yourself, attend your rehearsal and rehearsal dinner in many cases, and most importantly get some amount of rest for the day ahead. You are going to need it!

1. High demands. Try to keep in mind that although your Bridesmaids and Groomsmen may offer you extra help, these friends can become taken advantage of. The only “official obligations” of wedding party members are emotional support, the financial expense of wedding attire and travel, participation in the rehearsal and the obvious role on your wedding day. In the case of the MOH or BM, reception toasts are traditional as well. Other help that these individuals may offer should not be viewed as duties, but rather as acts of kindness including: setting up/tearing down, transporting ceremony goods, throwing a bridal shower or other party, distributing gratuities, and any other help that is offered.

Remember to be thoughtful towards your attendants. Bridesmaids may not be comfortable in 4 inch heels, purchasing new jewelry or paying to have their hair or makeup professionally styled.

Do not forget to personally thank any bridal party members for taking part in your wedding, as well as family members who gave you assistance. A small thank you gift is always appreciated.

Cake - Do’s and Don’ts You spent several hundred dollars for a beautiful and elaborate wedding cake, a replica of one that you saw in a magazine.

Everyone remarks on how pretty it is, and you are delighted. Then, a half hour into the reception, just as you are beginning to relax and enjoy yourself, your coordinator tells you that the cake is starting to collapse and you need to cut it now while there is still time to salvage it and to get those special pictures.

You rush to the cake table, place a forced smile on your face and quickly cut the cake.

Unfortunately, this scenario occurs all too often, especially at summer weddings, but it can be prevented. You can alleviate some of the problems by considering the following things when you choose your cake: • Cakes don’t tolerate heat, particularly those

made with buttercreme icing, nor do they tolerate wind. Keep the cake indoors, if possible, or in the shade. If the cake must be placed outdoors, first place it in a refrigerator, if possible.

Place the cake in a location that is level; otherwise, the layers may tip or slide. Shim the table legs if necessary to make them level. This is particularly important at outdoor locations.

• Cakes that have pillars between the layers are more apt to tip or collapse than those in which the layers are stacked on top of one another or placed on individual pedestals. Neither pillars nor pedestals do well in windy locations, however.

• Have the cake delivered as late as possible so that it doesn’t stand for several hours before being cut.

• If you choose to use colored icing on your cake, the food coloring

can stain your gown and your hands. Butter and shortening used in the icing will also stain, particularly if you wipe your hands on your gown (a natural tendency when they are sticky). Use forks, not your fingers, to serve each other and don’t under any circumstances shove cake in each other’s face.

With a bit of planning, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Sending a gift indicates your support and best wishes for the happy couple who are starting their lives together.

* DON’T arrive late.

Take into account extra time for traffic snarls, bad directions and last minute runs to the convenience store. If you plan to arrive 15 minutes early, you’ll most likely just make it.

No one should walk down the aisle after the bride. If you arrive late, try to slip in quietly down a side aisle. * DO remember to turn off your cell phone during the ceremony. It’s the height of rudeness to allow a personal call to interrupt someone’s oncein-a-lifetime, special moment. * DO personalize your gift. While registries offer a great way for couples to select the perfect gifts for their lives together, going the extra mile by adding a personal touch is a wonderful way to show you care. Mike Ensor hits for double double

Lady Coyotes bring home third place Freshman Drew Lockhart posts double double in tourney win The Paris Lady Coyotes defeated Salisbury in the opening round of the Sturgeon Tournament. They had fallen by two points in their first meeting and one point in their second meeting. The Lady Coyotes were due a win and grinded out a tough win in overtime to advance to the semi final game versus top seed New Bloomfield.

The Lady Coyotes fell to the state ranked top seed 49-38. (Drew Lockhart and Britany Williams each had a 12 point game) In the third place game versus third seeded South Callaway the smaller albeit quicker Lady Coyotes played inspired team basketball and took home the third place trophy with a 39-30 win. It was the Lady Coyotes third piece of hardware in the same number of tournaments.

South Callaway Lady Coyote Coach Garrett Thomas coached the South Callaway game like a virtuoso piano player. Every note he played was perfectly tuned. He needed a rebounder in came Abbie Wheelan and cleaned the glass for rebounds; he needed a scorer in came Hannah Mitchell and swished two three pointers; he needed scoring and a strong presence in the post and super Freshman Drew Lockhart hit 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double double.

Coach Thomas had the perfect substitution rotation to give the players a break but not enough to let South Callaway get any kind of momentum.

On the players side of the contest, the Lady Coyotes showed perfect defense under the boards as they boxed out the taller South Callaway players to gather in defensive rebound after defensive rebound to the tune of 19 boards. If

they did not get a clean rebound one or two Lady Coyotes was always there to bat the ball up for another try.

South Callaway did lead 8-7 at the first break and at the half 18-17.

Coach Thomas’ halftime speech must have inspired his charges as they raced out of the locker room for a 10-2 third period and a seven point lead with eight minutes to play. Paris played a tough back and forth scoring final period with the Lady Bulldogs but the back breaker was with two minutes left after a South Callaway mini five point run to close the gap, the Lady Coyotes tossed the ball around just out of the reach of the Lady Bulldog players. Drew Lockhart received a Betsy Embree pass at the top of the key and hit a wide open Brooke Rentschler who in turn deposited a six footer at the bottom of the net to give the Lady Coyotes an insurmountable seven point lead that they would not relinquish for the final 39-30 third place win.

Scoring wise – the Lady Coyotes hit their thee pointers when they needed (Betsy Embree, Britany Williams and Hannah Mitchell) while the guards (Betsy Embree, Abbie Wheelan) played a great game of catch on the perimeter while feeding the post players (Drew Lockhart, Brooke Rentschler and Carmyn Holmes).

New Bloomfield The Coyotes had two outstanding scoring quarters to lead 38-35 at the end of three quarters versus New Bloomfield in a consolation game. However, the Coyotes fell 12-5 in the final period scoring to fall 47-43 in the contest.

The Coyotes had a balanced scoring attack with Slater Stone and Dylan Painter leading the team in scoring with 9 points while August Hayhurst (7), Brant Francis (6), and Jon Turner (5) all cracked the scoring column. The Paris Coyotes faced top seeded Salisbury in the recent Sturgeon Tournament. The eightseeded Coyotes fell 66-33 to the top seeded team. In the opening round of the consolation bracket Paris fell to host Sturgeon 7854 and in another consolation bracket games the Coyotes, in a close contest fell to New Bloomfield 4743.

Salisbury In the opening round game – Paris narrowly trailed at the end of the first quarter 14-11. They trailed at the half 37-22.

A 14-5 and 14-6 third and fourth quarters respectively saw the final 66-33.

Jon Turner and led the Coyotes scorers with Brant Francis and Quin Bartels right on his heels.

Mike Ensor and Turner were team high in rebounding. Dylan Painter and Quin Bartels led the team in assists while four players tied for the steal lead.
