Cancer Awareness... Just two little words but in the next few weeks we will have a couple of key opportunities to actually do something about it or at least increase our knowledge of this important subject.

On Saturday, March 7 (I can’t believe how fast this year is already going) is the signature Monroe County Cancer Supporters fundraising event - Blow Cancer Away.

This year’s event will take place at the Paris R-II Schools High School Gymnasium, in Paris. Each year the event rotates between venues making it easier for our communities to take part and participate in this fun and worthy event.

The doors open at 5 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m.

An auction follows dinner as usual. The cost? A free will donation. You can purchase

tickets in advance for items up for raffle and then there is also both a live and silent auction.

The other major event taking place in the next few week’s is the annual “Kickoff ” for the 2015 Relay For Life of Monroe County that takes place in June. Kickoff will be held in March, at jacs restaurant, in Paris. The Relay Committee is planning on many interesting ideas that night so look for details to be announced soon.

MY TURN Making Adjustments

Now that I.S.I.S. has demonstrated its brutality and hatred for the U.S., it has moved to the front of this country’s list of enemies. I.S.I.S. has also been able to take over almost half of the country of Syria where President Assad remains in power despite four years of civil war. Assad is no stranger to violence either having killed at least 200,000 of his own people and the United States has continued to give support and assistance to the rebels who have tried to remove him.

The question now arises that if the U.S. could help broker a deal with Assad to share power with the rebels and turn his army loose on common enemy I.S.I.S., could the U.S. live with making such a foreign policy adjustment with this dictator under those circumstances in order to destroy I.S.I.S.?

Turning to home, it appears that our Supreme Court will decide four cases it has taken up in favor of the existence of a constitutional right for gays and lesbians to marry in all of our states.

The majority of Ameri-

cans polled appear to favor such a right. Will it then be possible for those who believe that marriage is between a man and a woman to be able to make an adjustment to their thinking and separate a civil contract and true marriage or a real marriage and be satisfied with their continuing opposition to what they feel is abnormal and unnatural physical contact even between married couples?

Adjustments are sometimes necessary in our foreign policy based on our perception of what is in our national best interests. The costs of such adjustments are the difficult part of such decisions.

Likewise when long held moral beliefs are adjusted to accommodate others of our brothers’ and sisters’ perceived rights, the costs must be assessed.

And for both of these kinds of adjustments we should have a point, a line beyond which we are not willing to adjust or make concessions. And we should at all times be aware and sure of exactly where that line is.

90 Years February 27, 1925 J.W. Lewellen, secretary of the Farmers’ Mutual, says that the lightning losses reported below are the first he can remember of occurring in February since he has been connected with the company.

The store and stock owned by Rob Ray Crigler at Florida and the Woodman Hall above it were destroyed by fire shortly after midnight Tuesday.

The Ladies Style Shoppe of Paris is advertising a spring style show of hats, coats and dresses, to be presented on living models at the Opera House Monday night.

The first maple syrup of the season was on the Paris market the first of the week, selling at from $2.25 to $2.50 per bucket.

Mrs. Lon Lewis, announced the formal opening of the new Ladies Ready-to-Wear Store at Paris in which she is to be manager.

Mrs. Roscoe Young and children spent Tuesday afternoon and night in Holliday.

Mrs. Edward Bruner, formerly Miss Ruth Spears of Holliday, sends to the Appeal a certificate from their county agent at Holton, Indiana, in regard to her husband’s success in making a litter of pigs weigh 2,030 pounds in 180 days.

75 Years February 22, 1940 Caskie Painter, newly elected President of the Paris Progressive Club, presided at a meeting for the first time, Monday night at the Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Gift Willier, formerly Miss Betty Rodgers, tendered her resignation to the board of directors of the Santa Fe school at a recent meeting. Mrs. Willier has been teacher in the Santa Fe school for the past ten years.

Miss Bonnie Ransdell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Ransdell of Holliday, was one of the two girls to be awarded the fifth annual Cardinal Key Scholarship, including tuition for the spring quarter, at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, Kirksville.

Roy Power opened his new liquor store in the south side of the Conley Café building this week. All his showcases, shelves and other fixtures were made by Power and are of solid, seasoned walnut.

Fay Ravenscraft, who has been in the service station business in Paris for several years, goes to Macon to accept a place as salesman in that territory for John Deere tractors and farm implements.

Chal and Roswell Henderson, both sons

of Rev. and Mrs. Roswell Henderson of Paris, won the Monroe County high school debating championship at Monroe City, Wednesday, when the Paris boys upholding the negative, won from Monroe City, and went on to defeat the Stoutsville team, while upholding the affirmative.

The Ralph Wood farm home, northeast of Granville, was destroyed by fire Thursday morning of last week. The fire started from a burning blue, from which sparks fell on the roof.

H.P. Noel stated Monday that for the first time in all his long experience as a feed dealer, cotton sacks, instead of jute were being used as containers for bran and feeds of other kinds.

The Fred Simon country home in the Turner district was damaged by fire on Tuesday but was controlled before much damage was done to the roof.

50 Years February 25, 1965 Mr. and Mrs. Dell Wheeler and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Lechliter attended the Indoor Invitational Archery Tournament at Quincy Sunday.

Dell won first in the Men’s Class C Instinctive Shoot and Eddie won second.

Walter Gliser announced this week that he has sold his tobacco and liquor store in Paris to William J. Bates of Paris, who has taken possession. Bruce Davis is in charge of management of the store.

The record snow of the 1964-65 winter season fell Tuesday and Wednesday in Monroe County, going to an estimated depth fall of eight to ten inches.

The Farmers Home Administration office of Joe Milan, county manager, has been moved from the first floor of the courthouse at Paris back to its former offices in the basement of the post office building.

Mrs. Judy Baysinger has been hired by Case Power and Equipment Co. to replace Mrs. Carol Eckman, who has moved to Macon, to work for the Sydenstricker Truck and Tractor Co., as secretary.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Dowell were honored with a miscellaneous shower Friday at the Long Branch club house given by the Long Branch Community Club.

James Reinhard, Paris attorney, was confirmed this week by the State Senate as Regent (Board member) of Kirksville State Teachers College.

Stephen L. Siron, son of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Siron of Paris, has been assigned from his ship to a school in San Diego, California, for further specialized training.

A son, their second child, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Erwin of Paris on Tuesday, Feb. 12. The baby was named Kiel Douglas.

10th District Senate Capitol Report

Missouri currently operates with a tax code that is more than 40 years old. It is severely in need of reconstruction. Senate Bill 15 was filed this year in an effort to modify provisions relating to taxation.

If successful in the General Assembly, it would also create a Study Commission on State Tax Policy. The Commission would include members of the Joint Committee on Tax Policy as well as members of the public who are experienced in the field of taxation. They will examine Missouri’s tax system and provide recommendations for improving weaknesses and creating a system that benefits the taxpayer and our economy, while achieving funding levels for important services.

The Missouri Legislature holds certain responsibilities in order to ensure a clear and effective tax policy is available in order for the system to efficiently function.

With our state severely lacking funding for transportation systems, education programs and local governments, it’s imperative we provide a tax code that reinforces sound fiscal policy to fulfill our priorities.

Missouri’s tax code has not undergone a detailed or proficient review since 1968, and it’s long overdue we look into some of our state’s tax policies. Senate Bill 15 was debated on the Senate floor this week and perfected. Although the Senate gave its first round approval, SB 15 will need to go through one more vote before moving to the House.

Budget Basics The state has released the January 2015 General Revenue Report, and with this report the 2015 fiscal year-to-date net general revenue collections. The state budget director announced this week the revenue collections increased from $4.57 billion last year to $4.80 billion this year, accounting for a 4.9 percent increase.

January alone showed a 4.1 percent revenue increase this year.

It seems Missouri is on the road to success already this year. As revenue for Missourians gradually increases and unemployment rates drop, people are able to get out of the house more and help Missouri build a Continued to page 5

Alec Fodge addresses county historical society

The Monroe County Historical Society met January 26, at the Paris Library basement. Marguerite Jones called the meeting to order and read the minutes of November meeting. Betty Crigler gave the Treasury report.

Announced the next Game and Card night will be February 13 in the Library basement. Doors open at 6 p.m., games start at 6:30 p.m. Karlena Shatzer reported that the copier at the Research Center was repaired at a cost of $290.00.

Quilt show was discussed by Verna Sprangler and members, a date will be set later. Verna suggested we get 2 x 2 boards for quilt racks and have each rack sponsored by a business. These can be used year after year. Verna will research for a place, time and cost of show and report next meeting.

Carol Comstock will check with Chamber of Commerce to verify the All Town Garage Sale date. Carol has contacted George Hunter with the American Legion, he said we could have the Legion for our sale, let him know the exact date.

be February 23, at the Senior Citizens center at 10:30 a.m. The program will be Sally Blakemore discussing “Growing up in Holliday”.

Lois Spencer talked about the “Blow Away Cancer” event being held at the Paris high school on March 7. Doors open at 4 p.m. Lois asked if our members would donate pies or cheesecake to the event.

The program was Alec Fodge, a graduate from Paris High School and the University of Missouri.

His program was on his trip to New Zealand. He spoke of the farming there and several other points of interest. It was a very interesting and educational program.

The Nancy E Stone Research Center has received a check from the State Historical Society of Missouri for $127.00, part of the Brownlee fund. This is a fund to organizations to publish or document Missouri history and its citizens.

The Research Center has a beautiful quilt and a hand-painted stein for a fundraiser. Both are on display at the center.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, is advertising the availability of lands for the purpose of agricultural lease at Mark Twain Lake, Missouri. Four parcels of land, containing approximate 278.5 acres, will be available for lease.

A pre-bid conference will be held at 9 a.m., CST, on Friday, February 27, at the Mark Twain Lake Project Office. Any inquiries concerning the agricultural leases may be

There was a special presentation on Friday evening, February 13, during halftime of the girls’ varsity basketball game, at Paris High School.

A statewide winner in the Battle of the Belt competition, Paris was presented with a bronze banner for their seat belt

usage of 92.31% from the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety for their success and participation in the program.

Student Council members, Quin Bartels and Hannah Bartels along with David Freitag, BOTB coordinator and Student Council advisor, accepted the award for

the school.

American Family Insurance Agent Scott Ball, and Brian Haeffner, with the Northeast Coalition for Roadway Safety, presented the banner award.

Paris High School was one of nine northeast Missouri schools to win statewide and regional honors in the competi-

tion this year. The Battle of the Belt is a seat belt competition between Missouri high schools to encourage the use of safety belts among students. The Battle of the Belt student safety belt competition runs from October 1 thru November 8.

Madison Homemakers donate funds to help local resident

Eighteen members were in attendance at the Homemakers meeting on January 22. President Kathy McCoy led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Membership Pledge followed. Marybelle read the Devotional “Learning to Pray to God”. Donna Newbrough sang “Thank you Lord For Blessing Me”.

Minutes were read by Secretary Gail Thomas. It was amended and approved.

Treasurer’s report given by Darleen McNutt Our Club Program Books for 2015 were completed by Nancy Campbell. They were distributed and filled out by members. As a show of ap-

preciation a $10 gift card was presented to Nancy.

A $10 donation was made to Methodist Church to cover the materials and printing of our Club Program Books. A donation of $25 was made to Larry LeGrand a resident of Madison who thankfully survived a house fire.

The next business meeting will be held on February 26th at 9 a.m.

Our soup supper will be that evening at 6 p.m..

Members will bring assigned food items and a $1.00 Bingo gift. Guests and Spouses are invited.

I was pleased to see the Governor finally release funding for the Cyber Crimes Task Force that I spoke about in my last report. This money will be put to good use protecting our children from online predators. In addition, the Governor released his funding hold on $8 million for Missouri Veteran’s Homes, five hundred thousand dollars for services for victims of sexual assault, and five hundred thousand dollars for sheltered workshops. In total, the Governor released holds on $21.5 million in funding for various budget items.

Legislative officials have told us that there is money available for further budget items that are currently being withheld. Therefore, I hope that continuing revenue growth will prompt the Governor to release more withheld items that were approved by last year’s General Assembly.

A meeting will be held at Rock Bridge Christian Church in Columbia on February 21, to discuss reorganization of Mid-America Christian Churches.

Happy Birthday wishes were for: Ronnie Elsbury, Lorene Kendall, Miles Alan Baker and for Tom and Diane Curtright’s three grandchildren: William, Caroline and Diana, celebrating in February. Memories of Dickie Olney’s birthday were also shared. “The Light of the World is Jesus”, was the opening hymn. Pastoral prayer and Gloria Patri followed.

Prayer concerns were expressed for: Mac Donovan, Pete Olney and Boug Francis. Joys were shared: a good doctor visit and report for Mary McMorris; George and Willie Harris being able to return to church following George’s illness; Johnny and Ann Ragsdale returning from southern travels; and the birth of a granddaughter, Chloe Grace, to Rod and Cathy Gremaud.

The prayer hymn, “I Need Thee Every Hour”, was sung; pastoral prayer and unison recital of the Lord’s Prayer followed.

As the communion hymn, “Bread of Heaven” was sung, elders Gary Wilson and Phil Blakemore, went forward.

Serving as deacons were: Nellis Kotsenburg and Gerald Roberts. Following sharing of communion and offerings, the doxology closed the communion portion of the service.

Scripture from John 15:9-17 was the reference for the sermon entitled, “Love One Another”. The message began with a history of St. Valentine and Valentine’s Day traditions.

How do we nurture the love found on this special day every day of the year? It begins by attaining and growing in Jesus’ love every day. Then continues by reciprocating His love; building it on trust and faith. Finally, recycling His love for He says repeatedly, “This is my command – love each other”.

The closing hymn, “Wonderful Words of Life”, was followed by prayer and singing of “The Spirit Song” to close morning worship.

A time of fellowship and refreshments was enjoyed.

Carole Roberts read “In Christ You are Blessed” from “365 Things God Wants Us to Know”. Diane Wilson shared a reading, “When God’s Busy”. Jim McMorris opened Bible Study with prayer and then in study of Romans 5:20-21 and Chapter 6.

Services begin at 9:30 a.m., each Sunday at Holliday Christian Church, followed by Bible Study at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

On February 15 church services began with the pastor giving an opening prayer. Regular church activities of the week were announced and all were encouraged to attend.

Announcements included: a love offering for the Daily family will be taken next week during service, Movie and Piazza Night on Feb. 21 at 6 p. m., and Ladies Tea April 25, at 11 a.m.

This message this week was titled ‘Believing is Seeing’ and came from John 4:43-54. This is about how a person’s faith changes and grows from even a short meeting with Jesus. Jesus had performed miracles in Jerusalem but was rejected as Messiah. Jesus headed to Galilee through Samaria and met the woman at the well. Samaria believed the words of Jesus without seeing miracles. This is faith Jesus wants believers to have.

Those in Galilee saw Jesus performing miracles in Jerusalem and welcomed him as a miracle worker, not the Son of God. A royal official is desperate to meet Jesus because his son is dying and only Jesus can save him. The official traveled twenty five miles to beg Jesus for a miracle. He was in a ‘crisis’ situation that we all can associate with because we have been there in one way or another.

Jesus’ desire is to move the official’s faith from desperate to saving. Jesus’ states they will not believe unless they see miracles but the official has not seen miracles and still asks Jesus to save his son. Believing what you see is not faith: seeing what you believe is faith (Heb.11:1). Jesus grants the official his request and the man believes the words of Jesus.

This is what Jesus wants of mankind – to believe His words as true, powerful, and faithful.

Believing the words of Jesus gave the man confident faith and he headed for home. His faith was confirmed the next day when he was told his son was well. The man’s faith was strengthened when he found out the illness left suddenly and not naturally (slow recovery). The illness left when Jesus spoke. We all need to learn that trusting Jesus will take care of our problems in life. Jesus has the answers we need if we demonstrate faith in Him. As the official gets home he tells his whole family (all he is responsible for) about Jesus and the all believe. This is deliberate contagious faith. This is a faith the world needs to see in believers today.

Some people wear seatbelts because it is the law. Those who are saved by seatbelts in a car wreck wear them because of their life saving power. Jesus came to save man from sin but doesn’t want us to trust Him because of the law or religious traditions; not even because we are desperate. Jesus wants us to trust Him because His words ate true, powerful, and have never failed man in the past. Does your heart trust the words of Jesus today?

Madison Grace United Methodist Church held worship service February 15, 2015 at 9 a.m., which was the Transfiguration Sunday.

Pastor Bonnie Sudsberry’s sermon was “Dancing in the Garden,” with Genesis 5 and Mark 9:1-9 as the scripture.

II Kings 2: 1-15 was the scripture read by Judi Kramer.

Jane Wilsdorf gave he story of Fanny Crosby who wrote the words to “Blessed Assurance,” by George Beverly Shay.

Nancy Schofield sang, “He Lifted High.” for the specials.

The Little Sermon, “Heavenly Insurance” a puppet show was given by Judi Kramer and LeAnn Brown.

“Never Think God Quits On Us” was the title of Pastor Kenny Sharp’s sermon with scripture text taken from Judges 16:26-28 (Samson), Matthew 26:75 & John 21:17 (Peter) and Acts 2:14 (Pentecost). Nothing is ever too big for God to handle. We need to ask each other for forgiveness AND never forget to also ask God for His forgiveness. He is the most important one!

Serving at the Lord’s Table were Charlie Horstmeier, Don Wilkerson, David Kendrick, Wayne Conley, Dennis Kendrick and Dan Sharp.

Prayers were requested for friends and family members as well as upcoming mission trips and Salt Saturday plans. Praises for many happy occasions were also shared with the congregation. Happy Birthday was sung to Bill Holmes.

Susan Kendrick invited anyone interested in the MFuge trip to attend a carry in meal following church on Sunday, Feb. 22. Monday, Feb. 23, there will be an orientation for anyone interested in helping with the Food Pantry at the Faith Walk Church at 3:45 p.m.

Karen Conley announced the Blow Cancer Away annual fund raiser for March 7 at the Paris High School.

The doors will open at 5 p.m., with the freewill donation meal serving at 6 p.m.

Ashley (Sam) Kendrick announced St Brendon’s School in Mexico will have a 5K Color Run on March 14 to help raise money for playground equipment.

The annual Family Fun Night will be Saturday night, March 21, at 6 p.m. Please be sure to put that on your calendar for a night of good food and playing traveling Bible bingo.

Sunday School is every Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., followed by church service at 10:30 a.m. Bible study is held on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m., (carry in meal at 6 p.m.). Please come and join us!

The service opened with Brenda Ensor’s prelude; Charles Ensor gave the invocation. Thanks were given to those who helped with the Valentine Banquet.

The children’s sermon was given by John Mitchell.

He showed them a Bible and told them this was God’s word. What does it mean to be blessed? We are blessed when we receive God’s favor. Psalm 1:1&2, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners, but his delight is in the law of the Lord”.

Mac Wilt and Steve Ensor sang special music, “The Potter’s Hand”. Mitch Ensor was the sound technician.

Reverend Wesley Hammond ‘s sermon was from Acts 1:15-26, titled “Choosing Matthias”. As the disciples waited following the commandment of Jesus, they stayed connected to God by prayer. The disciples were at a loss without Jesus. Their reference point was the Old Testament. They knew there was a need to replace Judas with someone who knew Jesus and went in and out among them and knew the Lord’s desires. With the Lord’s direction they chose Matthias.

When we live a life with expectations as the disciples did, we seek God’s direction and put into practice what he is leading us to do.

The First Christian Church invites everyone to an Ash Wednesday Service at 5 p.m. on February 18, followed by a Fish Fry for Wednesday Nite Live at 5:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a time when Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, and spiritual discipline. During the service, the minister lightly rubs the sign of the cross with ashes on the foreheads of worshipers as an external mark of penitence. Lenten Prayer Breakfasts will be held every Wednesday during Lent at 6:30 a.m. at the Senior Center.

Worship was held on Sunday, February 15, with Reverend Donna Scott officiating. Her morning message, “The Meaning of Love,” was based on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Hymns were: “Morning Has Broken,” “Jesus Loves Me,” To God Be the Glory,” “I Surrender All,” and “The Lord Whom We Love.” Participants were: Worship Leader Annie Herron; Elders Louise Glascock and Everett Martin; Diaconate Gayle Threlkeld, Celeste Vaughn, Roseann Raines, and Tammy Mason; Acolytes Hope and Lainie Chandler; Song Leader Mary Beth Mitchell; Pianist Vanessa Forrest; and Junior Church Leader Anita Ness.

The men of Granville Christian Church prepared a Valentine banquet last Saturday night. A good crowd attended. The Week of Compassion offering is being accepted now through the end of the month. This goes toward disaster relief and development.

Our spring schedule includes Farmer’s Day on March 15, with lunch. We focus on the joy of living in farm country with its challenges. It is also “Drive Your Tractor to Sunday.” Last year’s tractors received national coverage in the farm press. We will have another Chain of Prayer Day on March 21 where everyone is invited to spend a half hour or hour alone in the sanctuary lifting prayer concerns to God. Our Easter schedule includes Palm Sunday worship on March 29, Maundy Thursday services on April 2 at 7 p.m. and Easter Sunday worship on April 5.

We have cookbooks available, with the proceeds going to Relay For Life. Contact Dale Ann Magruder for those. A scrapbooking day will be held to benefit Relay for Life April 11 at Paris High School. Contact Melinda James for more information. A craft show will be held May 23 at the Madison Community Center to benefit Relay. This is the same day as the all-town garage sale.

Come spend an hour in worship and communion with the One who continuously remakes you, saves you and loves you, at 11 a.m. on the first, third and fifth Sundays (March 1, 15 and 29, April 5 and 19 ). Services were held at the Madison First Christian Church on Sunday, February 15. Rev. David Holmes opened the service with gettings and led the announcements. Joys and concerns were expressed before Rev. Holmes led the congregation in prayer, followed by the Lord’s Prayer he Adult Choir sang “Amazing Grace” for special music. The Lord’s Supper was observed and tithes and offerings were given. Rev. Holmes delivered the morning message, “A Love Worth Giving” using John 15:9-17 as his scripture. All were invited to Christian Discipleship.

Announcements: Youth Group meets Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. A lasagna dinner will be served Sunday, February 22, following worship, to help Taylor Salmons raise funds for her missionary trip to Jamaica this summer. Worship with Wildwood is Sunday, February 22, at 2 p.m.

The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service February 15. The ushers for this week’s service were John Gilmore and Larry Turner. Robbie Turner led the congregation into worship service with, “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.” The call to worship was, “There’s a Sweet, Sweet Spirit.” Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns and celebrations. He led the congregation is a pastoral prayer and The Lords Prayer. The special music piece was, “On, Great Savior.” The special music piece was performed by the chancel choir.

The scripture reading was from 2 Corinthians 3:1718. Pastor John Grimmett delivered the message, “Awesome!.” The closing hymn was, “Savior Like a Shepard Lead Us.” Robbie Turner led the congregation out of worship service with, “Blest Be the Tie that Binds.”

The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold worship service next Sunday, February 22. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:45 a.m. A sitter is provided during worship service for any children

The Perry Christian Church began their worship service for February 15 with the choir singing “Let Jesus Come Into Your Heart”. Bonnie Berry was our guest pianist and Brian Meranda was the guest minister.

The Community Choir will start practice at the Baptist Church, March 1 for Easter Sunrise Service.

“Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” was sung in praise. Mary and Leroy Young’s 70th anniversary will be on February 24. Mary will also have a birthday on February 18.

Brian led the call to prayer. “I Am Thine, O Lord” was sung. Our prayers continue for Bill Bowman, Susan Timmerberg, Josh Ferry, Chester Davis, Everett Ward, Cade Fierge and Cross Evans. “I Need Thee Every Hour” was the response.

The communion meditation was given by Brian.

“Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” was sung. The Elder’s prayers were given by Floyd Seelow and Joyce Coleman. Deacons serving were Anthony Elam, Carol Norman, David and Wyatt Lewellen.

Joshua 1:1-3 was Brian’s scripture reference for his sermon, “Great is Thy Faithfulness”. His message was of faith and love. Making a promise is an act of faith.

Faith is perfected by using it. We show our faith by our good deeds. God has our back in every task He asks of us.

“Jesus, I Come” was the invitation hymn. Brian gave the benediction and we closed our service singing “Yesterday, Today, Forever”.

His will is perfect if you allow Him to take charge of your thinking. You will become someone else - better than you ever thought. We are all one in Jesus! When Jesus comes back we will all be transformed for Him with healing.

by Dorothy and Robert Shoemyer. Refreshment committee for February 25 will be Ruth Ann and Elmer Dixson with all members furnishing sandwiches, salads and desserts for a 6:30 carry in meal.

Are You Buying a House or a Home?

As you read and study about buying real estate, you will often find the words “house” and “home” used interchangeably. There is a huge difference between a house and a home.

A house can be a place to eat, sleep, park your car, and put all your “stuff” (including other family members). It is a material possession and an investment. A home is where you feel comfortable, warm, safe, and protected.

A home is where you live.

A house is something you buy logically. A home is an emotional purchase.

When buying real estate you have to balance your emotional wants and your logical needs because there will almost certainly be a time when the two conflict.

Example For example, you may want a house with a view, but the payment is higher than you feel comfortable with on a thirty-year fixed rate mortgage.

What do you do?

Purchase the house anyway and budget more carefully for the next few years? Buy the same house without the view and get it cheaper? That’s when “buyer’s remorse” may come up, but...that’s a different article.

Balancing Act The trick in buying real estate is to view all decisions with both a logical perspective and an emotional perspective. If a situation presents itself that requires a trade-off, decide on whether there is a huge conflict or a small one.

Logic should win the big conflicts, but emotion should always be a factor, even winning the small ones.

Drew Lockhart sets new scoring mark

Coyotes defeat Fayette 3 players in double digits

Lady Coyotes win 20th The Paris Lady Coyotes traveled to Fayette and hosted Marceline in recent roundball action.

The Lady Coyotes defeated Fayette 58-12 and in last second heroics Drew Lockhart drilled a 12 footer to defeat Marceline 38-36. The Lady Coyotes have only a single conference loss this season and with a win over Fayette on Senior Night, travel to Salisbury (two conference losses) on Friday to determine a conference title outright or a shared title. Senior Night was a memorable night as the Lady Coyotes won their 20th game of the season and Drew Lockhart set the freshman scoring title with a monster long range three pointer at the half buzzer.

Fayette Versus Fayette, Drew Lockhart and Carmyn Holmes each posted a double double with 15 points and 10 boards and 10 points and 11 boards respectively. While Betsy Embree hit for double digit points (13) and Carmyn Holmes cleaned the glass for double digit boards (11).

Paris sealed the game in the first quarter behind their tenacious pressing, running defense and opportunistic scoring. The Lady Coyotes took the first quarter 16-5 and the second 22-6 for a halftime 38-11 score.

An 18-0 third quarter sealed their convincing 58-12 final.

Betsy Embree led the team in assists while Abbie Wheelan continued her hot hand at steals.

Paris twice pushed the lead to five in the fourth quarter once on a short jumper by Brooke Rentschler and the other on two charity tosses by Britany Williams. In the end, a great call by Coach Garrett Thomas led to a wide open Drew Lockhart, with five seconds left, at the top of the key where she hit a 12 footer for the win.

Lockhart led the team in scoring with 13 while Britany Williams (9) and Carmyn Holmes (8) chipped in on the scoring. Williams led the team in rebounding and assists while Abbie Wheelan was high again in steals.

The Paris Coyotes rocked Fayette twice in a week 63-54 the final of the first game and a 30-point win on Senior Night.

In the first game, Brant Francis, Dylan Painter and Slater Stone registered double digit scoring while Stone added registered a double double also cleaning the glass for 11 boards. Jon Turner also added double digit rebounds with 10.

Fayette Brant Francis ripped the nets for 21 points, added 6 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals. Dylan Painter scored 16 points including 4 three pointers and Slater Stone added 10 points (was 4 of 5 from the stripe).

Paris led 22-11 at the first break and a 16-5 second quarter found the Coyotes leading 38-16 at the half.

A 14-12 third quarter extended their lead.

Fayette tried to close the gap in the fourth quarter 25-11 to make the score closer than the game really was – 63-54.

James Monroe Chapter of DAR plans activities

COMMUNITY NEWS

The James Monroe Chapter of the DAR met January 15, at the Kendrick Insurance meeting room. Special guests this month was a group of Paris High School FFA members who gave a lively presentation of Parliamentary procedures. Members of the group were Robyn Batsell Amber Chapman, Katie, Raines and Taylor Gruber and the chapter advisor Elisia Hickman.

Upcoming events were discussed and plans were made for chapter members to attend the State Conference in St. Louis April 9 – 11, 2015. Delegates to the conference will be Annette Azdell, Emma Jo Raines and Chyerl Varvil, alternate.

A perspective members Tea was discussed and it is planned for April 19, as several had expressed an interest in proving their lineage required for membership.

October 3, will be a bike ride on the Katy Trail to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. DAR chapters from around the state have been asked to assist.

On Friday, February 13, members of the James Monroe chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution visited the Veterans Home in Mexico, Missouri.

They took Valentine gifts to each of the female veterans in residence there and spent some time visiting with each one. Members attending were Annette Azdell, Betty Buckman, Sara Crow, Carol Comstock, Juanita Turnbough, Chyerl Varvil and Dorothy Walser.

The next meeting will be February 19, and any person interesting in joining the group are welcome.

NECAC gets additional money for energy assistance The not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) is getting $284,505 in additional funding to assist qualifying families and individuals with winter energy assistance throughout its 12-county service area of Lewis, Lincoln, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Ralls, Randolph, Shelby, St. Charles and Warren.

The additional money is the result of Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon making more than $4.5 million in additional federal funds available through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in the state.

NECAC and other Community Action Agencies administer the program through contracts with the Missouri Department of Social Services.

The additional money will bring the total amount of funding available for the winter portion of the program to $18.6 million statewide.

Eligibility for energy assistance is based upon income, the number of people per household and the type of heating source.

LIHEAP assists with paying part of the energy bills of income-qualifying people. Eligible households could receive a minimum of $45 up to a maximum of $450, depending upon the type of heating source.

In addition, people who receive a utility shutoff notice also may qualify for assistance through the Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP).

Each energy assistance qualifying household can get up to $800 to help prevent disconnection of their utilities.

Parents and team members host golf team fundraiser

Golf team members, both boys and girls teams, and parents held a BBQ Pork Dinner fundraiser during Paris R-II Courtwarming evening. The fundraiser helped raise funds necessary to keep the golf program alive at Paris R-II Schools. Since funds were cut to the program, parents and friends of the golf program have helped keep the program active. The baseball team also is parent and community supported.

Meeting to be held on Sunday, March 1 for Sesquicentennial planning In July 1866 two young Kentucky men Perry Crosthwaite and Andersonville Mahall platted a village on the banks of Lick Creek County at the junction of two early primitive roads through Ralls County. After one hundred years of history the merchants, citizens of Perry and farmers in the area celebrated that anniversary with a large “Perry Area Centennial”.

Next year 2016 is the 150th year Sesquicentennial of the little town on Lick Creek plating and time to celebrate that

landmark. A meeting will held Sunday March 1 at the Perry City Hall to begin the planning and organizing that event. The doors will open at noon and the meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. If you cannot attend the meeting please stop by before or after the meeting to give your ideas and items for the event. Dawson family remembers son on anniversary of his death It is with heavy hearts that the family of Zachary Dawson remembers him on February 19, 2015, one year after his death.

Zachary had a heart of gold and was loved by so many. He never met a stranger and was always trying to do things to help others. He was caring and generous. He always had a smile or a laugh or two to share. He loved his family and friends. He loved his community of Madison.

For him, it was home.

Zachary was much loved by his family and will never be forgotten.

We miss him terribly.

There is a hole in our lives without him. Family and friends continue to express their on-going grief.

Many have said they miss the quiet times they spent with him. They say they could talk to him about difficulties and he was a good listener. He was always helping care for little ones and got them to smile. They all just loved him!

Fortunately, we have a God whose love defeats even death. It tells us in the Bible that God will never leave us or forsake

The 41st annual Missouri Severe Weather Drill is scheduled 1:30 p.m. CST, Tuesday, March 3. At that time, all National Weather Service (NWS) offices serving Missouri will send out a test tornado warning.

The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has granted a waiver for the State to use the Emergency Alert System (EAS) code for a tornado warning; TOR. Thus, the warning will trigger all warning systems that are programmed to activate on the reception of the TOR code. The test tornado warning will be clearly marked as a test.

The NWS will do everything possible to conduct the drill on March 3. However, if widespread weather conditions exist across the state that would make it inappropriate to conduct the drill, it will be postponed until Thursday, March 5, also at 1:30 p.m. CST. The drill offers an excellent time for everybody to test their weather warning receiving and

dissemination capabilities. It is better to discover and fix problems in the system now than have it fail during a real tornado event.

The drill also offers an opportunity for everyone, including schools, businesses, hospitals, and people in their homes, to test their severe weather plans. Having a thorough knowledge of your severe weather procedures and practicing them can be the difference between life and death in a real tornado situation.

The NWS would like to thank the State Emergency Management Agency, local emergency managers, and the Missouri Broadcasters Association for their support and help in disseminating information about the drill. It takes a team effort; Federal, State, Local, and private entities, to make the warning system work and ensure all Missourians can stay safe from severe weather.

The Official Reception of the 6th District will be held Feb. 6 at Hannibal at 7:30, and the Official Reception of the 3rd District will be Feb. 7 at Kirksville.

The Official Reception for the WGM, will be March 21 at Blue Springs.

The Official Visit of the DDGM, Anice Renner, to Shelbina has been changed to February 25.

The chapter was reminded that Pancake and Sausage Day will be March 21. The WGM will make her Official Visit to the 6th District on May 28 at Hannibal. Instead of each chapter having a Friendship Night, The DDGM would like to have a district picnic. The date is June 27 either at the lodge hall in Shelbina or the Shelbina Lake, time unknown.

Sallie Allison celebrated a birthday with all singing Happy Birthday.

Sheila Wilcox attended the Official Reception of the 9th District on Jan. 24 at Columbia. The Worthy Matron thanked the pro tems and refreshment committee for the evening.

Chapter closed in regular form. Prior to the meeting, refreshments of corn beef sandwiches with fixin’s, chips, ice cream and soda, furnished by Charles and Leslie Rosenkrans were enjoyed by several members. Refreshments are served before the meeting during the winter months.

ROBERT “BOB” GRIFFITH 1932-2015

Robert “Bob” Griffith, 82, of Eldon, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Lakeside Meadows in Osage Beach. On February 27, 1932 he was born in Paris, the son of the late Roy F. and Delia Fay (Hobson) Griffith.

On September 3, 1950 in Paris, he was united in marriage to Imogene (Miller) Griffith who survives of the home.

Visitation was Monday, February 2, from 5-7 p.m., at Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon. Graveside Service were Tuesday, February 3, at 2 p.m., at Sunset Hills Cemetery, in Madison.

Memorials are suggested to the Donor’s Choice.

Prescribed burn workshop Feb. 21

Fire has been used as a land management tool by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) for more than 30 years, but it isn’t as simple as dropping a match and watching it burn.

To assist landowners who want to safely use prescribed fire on their own property, the MDC is hosting a workshop from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Monroe County USDA Service Center, 18771 State Highway 15, Paris.

The workshop is free, but you must register by Feb. 19.

MDC staff will discuss methods and techniques for implementing controlled burns, safety considerations, and proper weather conditions for conducting a burn. Plus, the workshop will cover creating a burn plan and timing the burn based on your management objectives and landscape.

“This workshop is great for new or current landowners who would like to learn about using prescribed fire as a tool to improve wildlife habitat on their property,” said MDC Private Land Conservationist Jamie Ebbesmeyer.

“While uncontrolled wildfires can harm habitat and property, controlled use of prescribed fire can actually improve the health of natural ecosystems.”

The workshop will begin with a classroom session and a demonstration burn will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. , weather permitting. Attendees should bring field clothing (cotton or wool; no synthetics), leather boots, and gloves to wear for the demonstration burn.

HAROLD EUGENE BERGTHOLD 1925-2015

Harold Eugene Bergthold, 89, of Downs, Ill., formerly of Wyoming, Ill., passed away and went to join his family in heaven at 8 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 2, 2015.

He passed away at home with his wife, son and daughter by his side.

Harold was born Feb. 27, 1925, in Barron, Wis., to Issac and Rachel (Gill) Bergthold. He married Vivian Knowles on June 5, 1949, in Wyoming; she survives, currently of Downs, Ill. Also surviving are his son, Christopher (Kim) Bergthold; his two daughters, Pam Cunningham and Marlene (Tom) Wells; eight grandchildren, Stanley Dean Cunningham Jr., Amy (Shawn) Marksity, Robert (Sara) Bergthold, Paul (Jessica) Wells, Aaron (Krista) Bergthold, Cole Wells, Allison Wells and Emerson Wells; four great-grandchildren; one brother, John Bergthold; and one sister, Bonita Utterback.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Harold Eugene Bergthold Jr.; his parents; four brothers; and six sisters.

Harold was a World War II veteran, serving in the Marines 3rd Division 1st Battalion, Guard Company 7th Service Regiment from 1944 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater.

He was a member

and former trustee of the Wyoming Methodist Church and helped build the pulpit, lectern table, prayer rails and both crosses at the church.

He was a member for 56 years and former commander (1969) of Wyoming Legion Post 91.

He served as a Wyoming volunteer fireman for 20 years and was awarded the distinction of being an Honoree Fireman.

Harold was a farmer and later worked at the State Hospital in Bartonville, Ill., and for Peoria Construction, and was a

self-employed contractor and carpenter in the Stark County area for 52 years.

Harold was a loyal Cubs fan since 1935 and rarely missed a game.

He was an accomplished woodworker and liked to pitch horseshoes, play rummy with his family and hunt and fish and was an avid gardener.

He enjoyed his many friendships over the years at the Wyoming Bowling Alley coffee club.

Harold was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Wyoming United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dave Cucommun officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Wyoming American Legion, at the Wyoming Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wyoming United Methodist Church or the Wyoming American Legion.
