The produce aisle is the next big project for Charlie Ruba and the staff of Ruba’s General Store.
Charlie Ruba opened Ruba’s General Store on June 17, 2006. Since then he has made a number of changes, all to better serve the needs of his customers. Ruba expanded the deli department two years ago. The daily menu includes sandwiches and a wide variety of entrees including Mexican, Chinese and Italian dishes. The deli staff can serve 60 people in an hour. “We make our own breading for the fried chicken now,” said Ruba, “and we’ve doubled the amount we sell.” Also new to the menu are wings served
Carry & Conceal permits now locally controlled Starting Aug. 28 Conceal Carry Weapon permits will be issued by the local county sheriff ’s office. Ralls County Sheriff Gerry Dinwiddie explained that after Aug. 28 the Department of Motor Vehicles office will not be involved. The first step in obtaining a CCW permit is to take a class. Sheriff Dinwiddie emphasized that the instructor should be certified and the class should be at least eight hours long. Once the applicant has a Certificate of Completion from the instructor it should be taken to the sheriff ’s office. The applicant submits the $100 fee and fills out the application. Deputies will then run a background check and take fingerprints. This process could take two weeks to 45 days. After that the applicant picks up the permit card at the sheriff ’s office. CCW permits issued after Aug. 28, 2013, will expire in five years. Those issued before that date will be held to the three-year expiration. It is wise to apply for renewal 30 days before the expiration date. Any permit not renewed at the end of six months will be void. The Ralls County Sheriff ’s Office can be contacted at 573-985-5611 for more information.
in three varieties, buffalo, ranch, and hot and spicy. It hasn’t been easy to maintain a full fine grocery store in the present economy. “Everything is going up, utilities, taxes, product costs,” said Ruba, “but I’ve done everything I can to keep costs down, to make it economical for the customer.” One way Ruba has done just that is in his line of gluten free products. “We have a good variety and I plan to add more,” said Ruba. “It’s expensive so I take only a small mark up.”

The store carries over 10,000 items and more people have begun to do all their shopping here rather than going into Hannibal. “Every week I see someone new,” he said. At any time there are between 400 and 700 items that carry an in-store special, made possible when the factory gives the store a break in cost. One draw to the small store on Highway 61 is the meat department. Ruba has been tweaking that department over the years and now can claim customers who come u

AJ is very diligent about working with youth to accomplish their highest potential. He is willing to give of his time and talents to assist youth.
