On Sunday, September 14, the congregation of Olivet Christian of Center will hold a special service at 2 p.m celebrating the 100th Anniversary of their church building. In honor of the occasion a time capsule created at their fiftieth anniversary in 1964 will be opened followed by refreshments and fellowship. The public is invited. “I’ve been here nineteen years, grown a lot of strong friendships-this is a nice friendly church--a lot of concerns and a lot of things have happened in those years and we’ve come together and we’ve worked through the problems and and we’ve celebrated the things worth celebrating. We try to do the things the Lord

asks us to do. Small town ways, small town church, little things may turn into good things,” says Pastor Drew Sutor of Olivet Christian Church as their Centennial Celebration approaches. It’s an institution in this small town. As Barbara Hibb says, “I was raised in this church. It means family to me – it means security. It’s the center of the community.” Many setbacks have occurred in the history of Olivet Christian. According to a history compiled by Mrs. Wallace (Phylicia) Hart, the original structure, known as a Big House, was located five miles north of Center, had a split log floor (a step up from the usual packed

dirt floor,) and “benches made of split logs with four sticks driven into the bark side. It’s said the women had the benches on their side smoothed.” Fire destroyed the Big House in 1848 and a brick building constructed north of Center served as church and school until it was sold in 1871. A 40’ x 60’ home for Olivet Christian at what is now known as Olivet Cemetery became the next home for the congregation in 1873, and the name Olivet Christian became official. This building was later moved to Center and dedicated

GARDEN TRACTOR PULL HELD 12th Annual Perry Summer Shootout Garden Tractor Pull held Sept. 6 If you came through Perry on Saturday, Sept. 6 you knew there was something going on. The Bill Trower Memorial Park was packed with trailers and pickups. Drivers were busy getting their tractors to the dirt track for the 12th Annual Perry Summer Shootout Garden Tractor Pull. The pull was started by the Jaspering family and after the death of Amanda Jaspering became a memorial to her love of the sport. The proceeds are used to fund a scholarship in Amanda’s name for a student at Mark Twain High School each year. An opening prayer and the “Star Spangled Banner,” sung by Kennedy Jaspering and Madison Perry, got the event off to a start. Russell Flick addressed a record crowd, telling them the event was the largest in the state and that the 2014 event was the largest in Perry to date. The stands quickly filled and many people sat on blankets and in chairs on the grassy bank on the southwest side of the track. The pull started with the kids 900-pound stock class with 12 entries. There were 16 classes in all and the tractors roared and pulled from 5 p.m. until well into the early hours of Sunday morning. With names like

Trophy winners in the Kids 900-pound stock class were, left to right, Cash Rochob, Brady Roland, Bristol Sharp, Justin Jaspering, Bryson Regot and Ayden Sharp.

“Blue Thunder,” “Goin’ for Broke,” “Controlled Chaos,” and “Irish Eyes” the crowd knew there were some determined drivers giving all they had for the win. The event had dozens of sponsors and the Perry Area Chamber

of Commerce provided a food stand. An event like this is a testament to the goodwill and generosity of the Perry community which anticipates an even bigger event next year.
