The Hannibal Mark Twain Chapter of the Association of Retired Missouri State Employees (ARMSE) will meet on Friday, Oct. 17, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Nutrition Center, 219 South Tenth Street in Hannibal.

The program will be given by Stan Clark who is an accomplished musician playing the harmonica.

MTHS CLASS OF ‘99 REUNION

The Mark Twain High School class of 1999 will hold its 15th reunion, Saturday evening, Nov. 29, at the Junction Restaurant and Lounge in Perry.

The main topic of discussion at the Thursday, October 9, Ralls County Commission meeting was the proposed half-cent countywide sales tax that is on the November 4 ballot. The commissioners explained that rising fuel costs, the cost of gravel and maintenance expenses for the county’s roads and bridges have necessitated more funds. Taxes will not increase if this issue is passed.

The proposed sales tax will replace

the Courthouse Improvement tax that will expire on December 31, 2014.

The commissioners explained that the Courthouse Improvement fund still contains surplus monies that by law can only be used for maintenance of the Courthouse. During the past year, phase 2 of Courthouse improvements was completed. This included renovation of the bell tower, a new roof and replacing all three exterior doors.

Work on two bridges, one on Wisconsin Lane and the other on Camp Creek, is scheduled to begin as soon as weather conditions allow. These repairs are under a state/federal program and require a 20% match from the county.

That percentage is getting harder to come by as costs go up but revenue remains the same. There are 21 bridges

The Frankford First Christian Church will be hosting their 4th annual “Trunk or Treat” on Friday, October 31, from 5-7:30 p.m., at North Main Cross between the Frankford Park and the Church.

On Friday, October 10, Ralls County R-II fourth graders visited the state Capitol in Jefferson City. The students are pictured with District 40 State Representative Jim Hansen. Students were able to visit the Capitol Museum and Rep. Hansen invited them into the House Chamber. The children were able to sit in the representatives’ seats and see how they voted on issues.

YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

The Shadow knows. Who knows what (if anything) lurks in the minds of some people? But who ‘s not on first. Who’s on the disabled list. So, if you’re sitting in the outfield bleachers, and there’s a pop-up to your left (which would carry the ball to shallow right field), what’s the only chance for an infielder to “seize the play?” Naturally!

It’s often (in alphabetical order) amusing, bewildering, confusing, disconcerting, etc. to witness the paradoxes of viewpoint of any person, much less of an ideology.

For starters, let’s look at the always-provocative FiveTimesFive last Saturday. Everyone seemed to have an adventurous attitude toward pizza. But, yeah, that’s pretty controlled adventure. The next bite is always your option.

Moving on to the Haunted Houses (Halloween type) four of five enjoyed the “scare” at some life-stage.

Interestingly, the one dissenter apparently was not old enough to know it was not real and retained the displeasure. Which brings up the point: at what point does the mind clearly distinguish between fiction and fact? At the end of the movie “Monsters Inc.” the “monsters” learn that laughter is more powerful than screams of fright.

At what age will a child watching the movie (or any one of the many much more intense videos) with older siblings (or parents) be aware of the “invisible protective shield” separating “scare” from “terror.”

Apparently, “controlled scare” is not the same as adventure. Only one of the FiveTimesFive respondents was enthused about boarding Virgin Galactic for a flight into space. Another might take the trip after numerous successful previous flights. My guess is that the risk of a flight on Virgin Galactic

is highly minimal. Being a pilot myself, I sincerely doubt that the pilots of Virgin Galactic have a death wish. I would speculate that there is a greater chance of encountering a life-threatening situation (Ebola, flu, terrorist) flying Dulles to Dallas that popping through a hole in the ozone.

But perhaps the responses to the last question tell us the most. The question: “If your favorite team is near the end of a close game; do you stay the course?” All answered stay.

One added, “It’s not going to change anything.” The invisible protective shield.

(Unless there is expensive gambling involved.)

Images of terrorists’ atrocities, plagues, natural disasters, and violent crime flit across the back of the HD TV screen. The invisible protective shield.

Scary, but sanitized.

Not so much the exposed Savannah our herd traverses each day. Stalked by predatory marketing.

Baited by political trappers eager for the most pelts to trade at the polls. Vacuumed to “the other side of the looking glass” by hackers lurking among the cyber-circuits. No haunted house or pixel image here.

You can, however, still pick your toppings.

Imagine going to the polls November 4 and ordering a supreme government. No stuffed shirts. No thick bureaucratic crust.

No artificial enticements.

Unlike a special sale pizza, this order is “to go,” and will be your diet for quite some time.

A recent article dealt with the connection between animal abuse and human abuse. Makes you wonder how many pets survive ISIS and Taliban camps. But then, that’s on the other side of the world, behind the “invisible protective shield,” and has no connection to extreme action video games or ninja politics.

And the thunder rolls…and rolls… and the rain pours. I sit here watching the rain drops bounce off my deck. The yellowing leaves sway against a lead gray sky as the feeble sunlight is filtered through storm clouds. But, I’m safe and warm, fat and sassy, while I sip my tea and count my blessings.

I went in search of early fall photos a few days ago. There are some trees around town that are already aflame with orange and red foliage.

The bluffs around the lake aren’t there yet, but soon they’ll be a palette of dusty fall colors. I still can’t find those elusive pelicans. In town I’ve noticed some houses decorated with mums and pumpkins and a few enthusiastic souls have al-

ready spread spider webs and set out the ghosts and ghouls.

One more home football game and then the action shifts to the basketball court. While the football Tigers are still in season; practice has started for the younger Tigers whose season ends just before Christmas break. Crowded bleachers streaked with fans decked out in blue and white will remain the same; while the hot chocolate gives way to soda and the grassy gridiron cedes its glory to the hardwood court. I like a Friday night under the lights and the crisp autumn sting in the air, but I love the pounding of feet on the glistening wood and the swish of the ball through the hoop.

NEWSPAPER JUNKIE I am a newspaper junkie. I read the Kansas City Star, the Blue Springs Examiner, Focus on Oak Grove, and at least a half a dozen other rural papers that “Jack Remembers” is in. Whenever I am traveling in a big city or a small town, the first thing I do is buy a paper.

My folks had very little money when I was

small, but they always subscribed to the Kansas City Star, which back then had the morning paper “Times” and the evening paper “Star”. One of my earliest memories is of my mom reading the funnies to my sister and me. I also have subscribed to the Kansas City Star my entire life. However, there is only one

Here in Ralls County we’re fortunate that our students are provided with a variety of activities that can keep them engaged in healthy and educational events. Our young people can mix sports throughout the seasons with activities in music, art, and a variety of clubs and organizations. I’ll match the opportunities for learning and social growth provided by our “little school in the cornfield” with any of those from larger bastions of education.

Give credit where it is due. Educating our youth is a county affair combining the energy and talents of parents, educators and extended family members. When you add the church pastors and faith families, the

problem. It is hardly a paper anymore. It was sold to a big conglomerate in 1977. In 1990 they did away with the Kansas City Times. It has sold two more times since then, the owners worrying about the bottom line and not the news. It went from over 100 reporters to currently around 20, and most of those are in the sports department.

Back in the 1970’s, my best buddy had a used car lot. He would be down at 18th and Grand on Saturday night waiting for the first edition of the Sunday paper to be on the news stand so he could check out the hundreds of used cars advertised in the Sunday paper and then would be making an early Sun-

4-H and Scout leaders, and the myriad number of interested community members; you realize what a strong foundation Ralls County provides its young ones. They’ve had amble opportunities and plenty of guidance to test their wings before they fly from the nest.

Speaking of shared opportunities, why is it my attempts at making the tantalizing recipes on Facebook never turn out like the pictures posted? The ingredients are simple, I can read the instructions; but somehow mine just doesn’t turn out the same. Might be the universe telling me that I don’t need that gooey dessert made with crescent rolls. The ultimate blessing – for my health, if not my taste buds.

I wish the big papers would have lasted a few more years.

storms, the annual drivethru flu clinic scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, had to be cancelled. The annual clinics are not only for the convenience of the residents, but

also allows the health department employees to practice their disaster awareness training.

“Even though the clinic has been cancelled, the public can rest assured

that if there were an actual event (pandemic, etc), the Health Department would perform their duties despite any obstacles,” stated Tanya Taylor, Administrator.

Matthew 22:1-14 was read for the pastor’s sermon, “R.S.V.P.”. How do we respond to God’s invitation on a daily basis?

God’s amazing grace gives everyone in the world an invitation “to come to His party”.

“Is My Name Written There?” was the invitation hymn. The benediction was given and the service closed singing “When We All Get to Heaven”.

2014 “Trunk or Treat” The Frankford First Christian Church will be hosting their 4th annual “Trunk or Treat” on Friday, October 31, from 5-7:30 p.m., at North Main Cross between the Frankford Park and the Church.

The trunks of the vehicles will be decorated in a child friendly Halloween Theme and filled with goodies for the “Trick or Treaters.” This year we will be serving hot chocolate in the lower level of the church.

Trunk or Treat has proven to be a huge success in the past and we look forward to growing this year. We are inviting anyone in the community and the area churches who would like to put a smile on a child’s face to join us.

Bridging The Gap CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1A in Ralls County that are structurally deficient, 30% of all Ralls County bridges. Some bridges in the county are dangerous, but are the only means some farmers have to get to a blacktop or highway.

Twenty-six bridges (37% of the county’s bridges) are over 50 years old.

Nine bridges are posted at 8 tons or less. Twenty-five bridges are posted with some restrictions.

It was noted that all monies raised by the proposed half-cent sales tax will be used strictly for the repair and maintenance of the county’s roads and bridges. The commissioners are in hopes that coun-

ty residents will support this proposal so that the roads and bridges can be repaired and maintained in a manner that will allow farming and other businesses to develop and prosper.

Sheriff Gerry Dinwiddie addressed the Commission regarding the board bill for prisoners detained in jail. A particular case was discussed because the $3,500.00 board bill had been waived as part of a plea bargain. After some discussion, the commissioners said they would like to get more information in this particular case before taking any action.

Gilbert Cirrincione 1934-2014

Marvin Carl Yager 1926 – 2014

Mr. Gilbert Cirrincione, 80, of Quincy passed away at 9:02 a.m.

October 6, 2014 at Sunset Nursing Home in Quincy.

He was born March 6, 1934 in Dudley, the son of Sando and Corrine A. Schuknecht Cirrincione.

He was married to Maribel Botts on May 1, 1955 in Wellsville and she survives.

Other survivors include: one brother, Eugene Cirrincione of Overton, Nevada; three grandsons, Michael (Angie) Cirrincione of Quincy, Ill., Bradley Cirrincione of Payson, Ill., and Brandon (Meggan) Cirrincione of Lewistown, Mont.; two great grandsons, Carson Cirrincione of Quincy, and Emmitt Cirrincione of Lewistown, Mont.

He was preceded in death by one son and daughterin-law, Earl Jay and Pamela Sue Cirrincione.

Mr. Cirrincione was an area resident for many years and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in

Quincy.

He served in the US Army from May 5, 1954 until May 4, 1956 and attained the rank of SP3.

He worked as an engineer for Gardener Denver for many years and retired in 2003. He loved archeology and working as a volunteer on the Mark Twain Dig each year. He kept a daily journal and enjoyed genealogy. He loved spending time with his family.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 9 at Bienhoff Funeral Home in Laddonia with Pastor Jeremy Latzke officiating. Burial was in Farber Cemetery.

Visitation was held Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Farber Cemetery Association or Quincy Blessing Hospice.

Pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Mr. Marvin Carl Yager, Sr., 88, of Vandalia, passed away at 11:35 a.m., Oct. 8, 2014 at Country View Nursing Home in Bowling Green.

He was born March 28, 1926 in Hannibal, the son of John Columbus and Edna Velma Budd Yager.

He was married to Virginia Ann Rinker on Nov. 27, 1948 in Hannibal and she preceded him in death Dec. 1, 1976.

Survivors include: two sons, Carl (Donna) Yager, Sr. and Marvin (Rose) Yager, Jr., all of Vandalia; two daughters, Carla Hobbs of Laddonia, and Janet (Jim) Stevenson of Farber; one brother, John Columbus Yager II, of Bucklin; one sister, Eva (Walter) Zott of Castle Rock, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Eva (Dan) Eikel and Beth (Danny) Swaim, all of Martinsburg, Buddy (Tanya) Yager of Tucson, Ariz., Amy Stowers, and Tony (Shelley) Yager, all of Vandalia, Amanda Yager of Mexico, and Jessica (Dustin) Wright of Hermann; twenty-one great grandchildren; one great-great grandson: and a special friend Lavada Fessenden of Hannibal.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carlotta Sue Yager, one grandson, David Yager, one son-in-law, Virgil Hobbs, and one grandson-in-law, Gale Stowers.

He was a lifetime area resident and was Christian by faith. He was a W.W.II veteran having served in the US Army.

He retired from CE Refractories after 33 years.

He was a member of the Laddonia American Legion Post 510. Fishing, tinkering on cars, gardening, spending time with family and friends were his favorite pastimes.

Services for Mr. Yager were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Vandalia First Christian Church with Rev. Bob Hoehn, Rev. Jamie Franke and Bill Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Vandalia Cemetery.

Visitation was held Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the church.

Arrangements were under the direction of Bienhoff Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Dan Eikel, Danny Swaim, Tony Yager, Aarron Hull, George Yager and Dustin Wright.

It’s been a busy week at Perry Christian Academy as the students have participated in Fire Prevention Week.

Beginning on Monday, the preschool, kindergarten, first, second, third and fourth grade students were able to learn all about fire trucks as the Perry Volunteer Fire Department brought one of their fire trucks to school.

Volunteer firemen Corey Fry and Steven McClain talked to the students about fire safety and the fire truck equipment.

On Tuesday, the entire school discussed the different types of emergencies and how to prepare for them. During the day, the students practiced fire, tornado and earthquake drills.

Smokey the Bear visited the kindergarten, first and second grades on Thursday. He also talked to the students about fire safety and sent them all home with coloring books, pencils and other reminders about being careful with outdoor fires.

New London City Council New Fire Department Training Building, Curfews, Flooded Streets Discussed at New London City Council Meeting Inadequate drainage ditches, resulting in flooding at the New London Second Christian Church as well as other locations was the opening topic at the October New London City Council meeting.

While individual homeowners are responsible for culverts on their property, the city may look into hiring a contractor to clear ditches to improve drainage. The sewer inspections are complete and fire hydrant flushing has

begun.

By an unanimous vote, beginning immediately New London residents and visitors will face a fine if they violate a new city ordinance forbidding access to New London parks after sunset.

The New London City Council authorized the New London Fire Department to solicit bids and a contract for a construction of an additional building adjacent to their current building on Carstarphen Place.

The fire department has asked the city to go half on the new building. The new building will provide

space for all fire departments in the county to train together and provide more efficient and consistent methods of fighting fires when working as a team.

Both fire trucks were pump tested and compliant. The fire department would also like ladder testing after the first of the year.

Don Epperson reported the recommended repairs in city parks discussed in last month’s meeting had been repaired. It was noted that a section of the fence at Ruth Roy Wright is need of repair.

The ordinance establishing a curfew for city park at sunset was passed unanimously, and goes into effect immediately.

city to post a sign on First Street restricting pedestrians from walking in the street.

Mayor Miller has met with Loves Truck Stops and they have requested voluntary annexation.

The Zoning Committee will review zoning issues and any necessary changes.

Brian Lathrom was appointed to the position of City Building Inspector on a per job basis of $25.00 per hour with a two hour minimum.

Historical Society publishes book and CD for numerous local cemeteries The Monroe County Historical Society has recently published a directory book and photo CD for historic Florida, Victor, Hawkins, Crigler, Bannister, Mt. Prairie Baptist and Mt. Prairie Presbyterian Cemeteries in Monroe County.

Some of these cemeteries are still in use and have active cemetery associations. Maps showing burial locations in each cemetery were created as part of the project and are included in both the book and CD. All surviving headstones in both cemeteries were photographed in row order in Sept. 2013 and then compared to previous

transcriptions, death certificates, obituaries and other records available to the Historical Society.

of known burials with birth and death dates, plus a section and row chart that gives the name of a spouse and/or parents as determined primarily from headstone engravings, death records and obituaries. The companion CD includes photos of all headstones in alphabetical order. Pleasant Hill Cemetery was published in 2009 and has been updated recently. In 2010 a second set which includes Bryan, Cedar Grove, Long Branch and New Hope cemeteries was released followed by a third set in 2011 for Bethel Cemetery in Holliday. A fourth set for Stoutsville/St. Andrew Cemeteries was released

in 2012. The fifth set for Santa Fe/ South Fork Cemeteries was released in 2013. Booklets and CD’s are still available for each of these earlier sets.

The Monroe County Historical Society also has copies available of the recently published Volumes 1, 2, and 3 of Nancy Stone’s Monroe County History columns from the Lake Gazette during the period 2006-2011 for $20.00 each.

The Monroe County Historical Society is a non-profit 501(C)3 corporation founded in 1967 to preserve the history of Monroe County. All profits from the sale of these booklets support that mission.

Perry City Council Shannon Smart, a resident of Perry, addressed the Perry City Council at the October 7 council meeting. She asked about the delinquent utility bill against the mobile home she recently purchased.

The utility bill from the previous owner is in collection and according to the city’s ordinance, she cannot hook up utilities until the previous bill is paid.

“How is this my problem?” Smart asked.

“We can’t eat these delinquent bills,” answered Mayor Dustin Wasson.

Facts established were: the $1200 utility bill is delinquent and in collection; and the previous tenant of the trailer and the owner of the trailer have been turned in to the collection agency. Wasson and council members empathized with Smart, but continued to assert, “Somebody has to pay the bill.”

“It’s not my responsibility any more than it’s yours,” Smart countered.

City Clerk Danette Henderson restated that the entire amount had to be paid before a new meter could be hooked up.

Further discussion among the council members centered on the fact that the city could overturn the ordinance in a particular instance. Wasson was opposed to doing that because “It sets a dangerous precedent.” Smart was asked if she could pay the delinquent bill.

“I have to pay $1200 to clear someone else’s credit and pay my monthly bill?” she asked. After more discussion she finally said in frustration, “I need a place to live, I need utilities. If that’s the only option I have to put a roof over my kids’ heads…”

Although Alderman Kim Long suggested leaving half in collection and having Smart pay only half of the delinquent bill, a motion was made to turn

on the utilities and allow Smart to pay $100 a month for 11 months and $25 for the twelfth month. Aldermen Travis Sharp and Jim McIntire voted yes, Aldermen Kim Long and Anne Barnett voted no. Mayor Wasson broke the tie with a yes vote.

Wasson then reported that there had been three interviews with candidates for city police chief.

Superintendent Don Huff gave an update on a siren system for the city’s whistle. This system would allow Ralls County 911 to fire off alarms for tornado and severe weather. There are options available for the system. It was noted that citizens had requested that the whistle still blow at 7 a.m., noon and 6 p.m.

Huff was also asked to get information on the cost for a siren on the other side of town.

The council voted unanimously to: *accept the bid of $10,256.31 from Bridgewell Resources, * repair the two broken windows in the backhoe for a cost of $492.83, * purchase two buckets of chemicals for the lagoon from Heartland at a cost of $811.76, *remove Bill Bowman from the active fire fighters roster, and to *offer the old fire truck to the Rural Fire Association for $1250.00 and if not accepted, scrap the truck.

Alderman Long reported that she had contacted the Missouri Conservation Department about getting trees for the park.

A representative will meet with city officials at a later date.

Raises for city employees had been tabled in the spring. Alderman Sharp asked if a raise could be given now. After some discussion the council voted unanimously to give city employees a fifty-cent an hour raise.

Ralls SWCD Announces Nov. 1, 2014 State Cost Share Signup The Ralls County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will start State Cost Share Sign-up November 1, 2014.

The District is initiating sign-ups due to the limited amount of Cost Share funds and the high demand for assistance.

The Ralls SWCD Board of supervisors will evaluate the requests and allocate the funds based on the greatest resource need in order to get the most conservation applied on the land for the dollar. Wheat ground and set aside land are priorities.

Landowners who are planning to construct conservation practices between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016 and want to use state cost share assistance are required to sign-up during this period. Only assistance requests received during this sign-up period will be considered for cost share.

Conservation practices currently available for cost share assistance include Terraces, Sod

waterways, Diversions, Permanent Vegetative Cover Establishment, Critical Area Seeding, Water Impoundment Reservoirs, and Water and Sediment Control Basins.

Other costshare practices that are available are: Grazing Management practices and Sensitive Areas Well Decommissioning.

A new COVER CROP practice is now being offered through the State Cost Share.

If you do not sign-up in November 2014, you will not be eligible for fiscal year 2016 funds.

Center City Council Center City Council met in city hall at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8.

The council voted unanimously to accept the first and second reading of “An ordinance amending Chapter 73, ‘Nuisances’ of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Center, Missouri, to include new sections 73.090 – 73.200 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Center.” Definitions of garbage and rubbish were among those included in the amendment.

Sections labeled “Rubbish and Garbage,” “Disabled Motor vehicles and Other Junk,” “Open Storage of Inoperable Vehicles or Public Safety Hazards,” “Duty of the Owner or Custodian,” and “Penalty” were also added to the amended ordinance. Anyone wishing to read this

ordinance can do so at city hall.

There was a discussion of the Center Apartments on South Flowerree Street.

The building has been condemned. Bids will be requested for demolition and the matter will be discussed at the November council meeting.

The council set a public hearing on the bond issue for wastewater improvements for the City of Center that will be on the November 4 ballot. The hearing will be at 7 p.m.

Manholes were discussed. New ones have been put in on Keithley Street.

A tree fell on the slide in the park. It will cost $1900 to replace it.

New London Elementary Habit Heroes For August

At New London Elementary, students are nominated by their teacher as the monthly ‘Habit Hero’ for displaying one of Steve Covey’s Seven Habits in their classroom.

Students are recognized on Friday’s for their leadership within the classroom and their families are invited to attend to help celebrate the students’ accomplishments. Each grade level teacher nominates one student for displaying one of the Seven Habits.

New London Elementary Habit Heroes For September

At New London Elementary, students are nominated by their teacher as the monthly ‘Habit Hero’ for displaying one of Steve Covey’s Seven Habits in their classroom.

Students are recognized at the end of the month on a Friday for their leadership within the classroom, and their families are invited to attend to help celebrate the students’ accomplishments. Each grade level teacher nominates one student for displaying one of the Seven Habits. Corey Gilmore and Trey Arndt lead Tigers in tackles versus South Callaway The Mark Twain Tigers ran into a buzz saw on Friday, October 10 when they host South Callaway as they fell 52-0 to the perennial powerhouse.

South Callaway scored 27 unanswered points in the first quarter to seal the game. The second quarter was scoreless. South Callaway added 13 points in the third and fourth periods for the 52-0 final.

Ethan Mack hit six of his eight passes for 39 yards of offense and rushing the Tigers had 98 yards for 137 yards of total offense.

Trey Arndt led the team in rushing with 72 yards on 21 carries. Mack added 32 yards on the ground.

Wyatt Sharp led the team in receiving with 33 yards on five catches.

Defensively, Corey Gilmore and Trey Arndt led the Tigers in tackles with Ryan Bailey, Loren Carlisle, Walker Sharp and Wyatt Sharp close behind.

7th - Amber Ferry (medal) 8th - Anna Gill (medal) “I am very proud of my kids and their efforts for this race!” said Coach Erin Mack. “This was the hardest course they have faced all year and they really had to push the level of intensity at which they raced to an extreme.

There wasn't a flat spot on this course. This course was mapped out with rolling hills, ditches to jump, trees (branches) to dodge, and sharp corners to cut.

And with all the rain we received the night before and the morning of, the course just got even more treacherous with each passing race. The hills became muddy slides and the runners really had to watch their footing when running the uphill and downhill slopes. From the beginning I told my athletes to not expect to PR (get a personal record) on this course, but to rather run "their" race and run

to the best of "their" ability - and they did! Given the fact that this was such a tough course, they performed well and did better than expected. I told my kids to not let their times be a reflection of how well they did, but focus on where they finish. All my varsity girls finished in the top third of their race and the varsity boys placed 7th overall, with a neck-toneck finish for Cornelius and Tonkinson! And my JV runners all finished in the top fifteen, with medals! This is an exceptional group to coach.

They work hard, push each other, and encourage one another. They want to see each other do well, not just themselves. From the beginning I have been telling my athlete's that "it gets easier." But I recently saw a quote that said, "It doesn't get easier, YOU GET BETTER!" Which is exactly what my athlete's show me with each race they are getting better!

Quilting Group Meets, Donates Creations to Area Nursing Homes The women who comprise the Wesleyan Circle of the Saverton-Ilasco United Methodist Church have been spreading warmth for more than three decades.

On Wednesday mornings, extending into early afternoon, a faithful gathering of women congregate at the church to sew.

They make lap robes and quilts of all sizes. The lap robes are donated to area nursing homes.

Martha Northcutt, who at 98 is the oldest member of the group, has been participating in this sew-

ing circle for more than 30 years and has been a church member for 77 years. She passes along the technique for a special stitch – the comfort knot – that makes the Ilasco quilts unique.

“It was taught to me by somebody a lot older than me,” she said. “You wrap the thread around the needle and push it through,” thus making a knot that will hold together over time.

This knotting stitch is not the only technique handed down through the generations of quilters.

Joan Thompson said that the former member Kay Detweiler taught her how to fold and stitch the quilt corners. Martha Northcutt and Kay Detweiler were in the same graduating class at Ilasco High School.

The weekly sewing session encompasses much more than quilt making. The gathering offers women – some of who do not get out much – a time to visit and reminisce.

Once a month, a county health nurse stops by to take blood pressure and offer healthy lifestyle ad-

vice.

Martha demonstrated how the quilt pattern starts in the center and works to the outer edge.

“The corner is supposed to match the center,” Martha said, and the four corners match each other.

Most of the material they use is donated, and then cut into 4-inch squares. They have containers filled with fabric and cut squares, ready for sewing. They prefer polyester fabric for the quilts.

While fabric is plentiful, they often run out of the most popular colors.

“Orchid is what they really like,” Martha Northcutt said. Also popular are lavenders and blues. “We’ve made some really pretty ones.”

It takes 16 blocks to make a lap robe, and blocks are typically alternated, mixing prints and solids. Martha Northcutt pins the hems and does the tacking. “When my eyesight was good I did everything,” she said.

Joan Thompson usually hems the quilts on a sewing machine that was donated to the church.

In addition to donat-

ing lap robes to nursing homes, the women will custom make quilts to order. Quilts are sold in order to raise money for missions.

“If you want a lap robe for an older friend, we charge $5,” Northcutt said. They will also make a queen quilt for $70, and a baby quilt for $20. “All sizes, twin, full, queen, king. We will make a quilt for anybody,” she said.

Hoyt Family Chosen as 2014 Ralls County 4-H Family

Terry and Joy Hoyt, Ralls County Hall of Fame recipients are pictured with Missouri 4-H Foundation Trustee Marla Tobin. Our contribution to the 4-H program has been served as project leaders, club leader, and fair judges for a variety of projects, and served on numerous county committees. We are currently on the Ralls County 4-H Fairboard, and the Ralls County Extension Council. We really enjoy helping and working hard with the countless hours to ensure that our own county fair is a success.

What a great program to be involved in. Everyone should try 4-H as a member when young and then help volunteer that has been very rewarding and making new friendships. , said Terry and Joy Hoyt.
