Many Ralls County residents attended a ‘Meet The Candidates’ event on October 25.
A Meet the Candidates event was held Saturday, October 25, at the New London Lions Club building. The event was planned and hosted by the staff of the Ralls County Herald Enterprise. A lunch of hot dogs, baked beans and chips was served at 11 a.m. followed by the candidates’ remarks. Seven candidates were seated at the front table: Rep. Jim Hansen and the Democratic challenger, Lowell Jackson; Presiding Commissioner Bob See and the Democratic challenger, Wiley Hibbard; Democratic candidate for County Clerk, Sandy Lanier and the Republican candidate, Pansy Kolb; and Jena Epper-
son, County Treasurer. RCHE publisher David Eales led the pledge and Leanne Reed gave the invocation. Eales served as the moderator. Each candidate addressed the audience, giving a brief biographical sketch and positions on relevant issues. Some of the issues addressed included development of local economy; county budgets; and the need for all office holders, regardless of party affiliation, to work together. Candidates were then asked specific questions. Hansen and Jackson were asked, “How will you work with colleagues across the aisle?” County candidates were asked “What is the biggest
issue facing Ralls County?” and “How can your office help residents be more engaged in local government?” Answers echoed the need for cooperation, the need to keep constituents informed, and the need for ways to grow the local economy. Candidates and audience members mingled afterward to further discuss the issues and challenges that face residents of Ralls County. Eales reminded everyone to learn about the amendments, issues and candidates, but more importantly to get out and vote. Read more about the candidates on page 8A.

Roderick Warren, Westview Administrator, visits with resident Nelly Flores. Nelly enjoys crocheting and was working on an afghan.
Autumn is thought of as a transitional season and so it is at Westview Nursing Home in Center. Roderick Warren is the new administrator and has already implemented extensive remodeling throughout the facility. “There is a movement within the corporation to make all our facilities more homelike,” said Warren. Wallpaper has been removed and the offices, meeting rooms and hallways have been textured and repainted. Soon the carpet will be removed and wood flooring laid in its place. A main focus
for Warren is the dining room, which also serves as the community room for programs, activities, meeting with family members and special events. “We’re going to get new tables and chairs, add blinds and valances and decorate the room like a country kitchen,” said Warren. “I want to add a big screen TV and a mantle. And I’d like to fix up a snack counter with ice cream for the residents.” Walking through the facility Warren points out other areas
