Mark Twain High School Wins State ProStart Management Contest

The Missouri Restaurant Association Educational Foundation in conjunction with the Missouri Beef Industry Council sponsored the State ProStart Competition, which took place at the Ramada Plaza Hotel & Oasis Convention Center, in Springfield, on Feb. 20-

21, with approximately 120 high school students from throughout the state competing for the top honors.

LIVE FROM MY KITCHEN TABLE, IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT Well, the Olympics are finally over. Just in time for March Madness, Survivor, The Voice, NASCAR, NBA Playoffs and NHL Playoffs. By the way, did you catch the fact that one member of the Russian Olympic Hockey Team was also a player in the NHL? Not that there’s much of anything amateur left in the Olympics anyhow.

Speaking of amateurs, have you been following the proceedings wherein the Northwestern University football players are arguing that they are employees and should be allowed to unionize? I suppose that would make them professional amateurs? Is the NCAA going to have to redefine “amateur athletics?” And, realistically, if the players and their legal crew do sustain the contention that the players’ scholarships are, in fact, payment in return for their services as football players, then I think Uncle Sugar and the IRS will be most happy to advise them of their income tax levy.

Full scholarship to Northwestern has got to easily be into six-figure territory. Yup, Uncle will be happy. I suppose they would be able to claim their union dues against taxes.

During the arguments presented, the Northwestern quarterback bemoaned the fact that he was forced to put in so much time “at work” (playing football) that he had to drop out of premed. Sounds like a time to evaluate what you’re attending college for NFL or student loan? Get a concussion or know how to treat and prevent them? And, who will pay for the health insurance; the school or the “professional amateurs?” Under Obamacare they can’t be turned down. Oh, that’s for pre-existing, isn’t it?

penings (and I suppose a sure sign of spring) the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition is out. No gays yet. The anticipation in the legal world must be excruciating.

B elieve-it-or-not, there’s apparently some “flap” about Barbie being pictured on the cover.

The premise is that Barbie is not living up to the role model for young girls.

To her credit, Barbie appears in an outfit much less revealing than many seen in school hallways today, and sports no tats or piercings of nose, lips or tongue. Okay, Moms, fault that.

One respondent to Five Times Five felt that a child’s doll should not be on the cover of an adult magazine. Pope Francis on the cover of Rolling Stone?

Another respondent also felt Barbie was out of place but added, “Children don’t and shouldn’t be reading the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, so I wouldn’t see a problem with it.”

My favorite, though, was another response that took the swimsuit issue to task generally in that it “does not send a good message to young girls. A person can be beautiful on the inside.” (No argument from me, but skindeep beauty does cover up a lot.)

“Besides,” (This is the part I couldn’t let slide) “Barbie is plastic.”

One thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, it’s no use!

Exactly how many swimsuits depicted in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue do you think contain only natural organic filler? Without any synthetics, many amazing figures would not be.

AFGHANISTAN SCAM I just got an e-mail from Captain John Anthony with the 4th Battalion, 64th Armored Regiment Unit that patrols the Helmend Province of Afghanistan, who told me he was seeking my assistance to evacuate the sum of $25,000,000 United States dollars so that he

could be assured it would be safe in my care until he returns to the States. He has agreed to offer me a reasonable percentage of the total sum of money (40%) as gratification for my assistance and cooperation. He says it is $100 bills throughout and will be contained in one trunk

On the way to work last Friday I noticed the fields on the left hand side of Hwy 19 were turned for spring planting. What a wonderful sight. I cracked the window so I could smell the freshly turned earth.

Some of the furrows were filled with water from the previous rains and the scent on the air spoke of tender shoots soon to sprout and the land turning green again.

The sun was out and the trees along the edgeways reached bare branches in supplication, or perhaps gratitude, to a pale blue sky.

I know I’m jumping on the springtime wagon a little soon, but it has been a harsh and long winter, even for us here in the heartland. I know cold nights and storms await us and it’s anyone’s guess if it will snow, sleet, or tornado-like winds. All that makes these promising sights more cherished.

Sunday I stood on the deck and listened to the birds, more and more of them have been gathering in the trees that line my small pasture near the barn. The avian chorus was led by the raucous cries of the blue jay, but there was still music in the air. The wind chimes on the porch accompanied the birdsong and the breeze stirred the frozen honeysuckle vines. One lone goose honked in forlorn bewilderment as he flew over.

Elementary students have been playing outside and hearing their laughter and excited cries as they shot hoops or played on the swings and jungle gym added a new layer of hope for the changing season.

I’m slowly putting the house back together. My son helped me move the plants back into the living room and I noticed that some need repotting and that they all look a little ragged. Soon

I hope to move the larger ones outside on the porch where they can rejuvenate in the mild weather and filtered sunlight. I really want to get into the flower beds and replant the hanging pots of geranium and petunias. There’s a lot to do in the yard and garden and I, like so many, can’t wait to get back to tending the soil and basking in the riot of color from flower and vegetable alike.

This spring has been long awaited and will be deeply appreciated. The human spirit can live only so long in dark and gloom. So, Pollyanna that I am, I am going to count the days till 12:57 p.m. March 20, the almanac’s official start to spring. I am going to plan and start seedlings and be ready to go. And I am not going to complain about the spring rain or the summer heat.

The one drawback to making those big dollars is you always have to send the widow woman or banker money to bribe an official in order to get the money out of the country. The above email was a new twist. I had just printed an article a few weeks ago about how the CIA was giving the President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzia a sack full of hundred dollar bills every month amounting

to tens of millions of dollars over the past years. I thought maybe Captain John Anthony had found where Hamid had stashed the cash.

Captain Anthony called me, in broken English, wanting a few thousand dollars to get the box out of the country. I told him since 40% of the money was mine he had my permission to open the box back up and take the bribe money out of the 25 million. Lo and behold, Captain John Anthony hung up on me.

During halftime of the Lady Tigers’ game a check was presented to the Mark Twain Athletic Department on behalf of Jeremy Lake, former MT Tiger, who was recently selected as the winning farmer in Ralls County for America’s FarmersGrow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund.

Under this program

eligible farmers in 1289 counties across 39 states, including Missouri, could enter to win a $2500 donation for a local nonprofit of their choice. Jeremy chose to donate this $2500 to the Mark Twain Sr. High Athletic Department.

The purpose of Grow Communities is to recognize and celebrate the important contributions

farmers make to rural America, and to help them grow their communities by supporting local organizations that are important to them.

More than 82,000 farmers across the country participated in the program this year, with a winning farmer selected in each eligible county.

New Ralls County 4-H Youth Program Assistant –DeeDee Martin Ralls County 4-H has a new 4-H Youth Program Assistant, DeeDee Martin. She has been involved in the 4-H program most of her life, from being a member, volunteer leader and parent. DeeDee and her husband Shane are the parents of six children ranging in age from three to 18. She has led projects

from cake decorating, entomology to poultry.

“I am excited to be working the 4-H program and hope to encourage the members with excitement, opportunities for fun, learning and growing leadership,” commented Martin. She will be available Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Perry Christian Academy Students Qualify for Archery Tournament Archery students in 4th-10th grade at Perry Christian Academy have been working hard to improve their skills for State competition.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, PCA hosted their first state qualifying archery tournament. Palmyra Middle School students and PCA students displayed excellent sportsmanship during their competition. Archers in 4th-10th grade shot 30 arrows each vying for a spot in the Missouri State Archery competition to be held March 29.

PCA 10th grade student Kara Phillips, in her first archery competition, shot the high score in the tournament with a score of 279 out of 300 points, qualifying her to advance to the state level. The PCA Middle School team (6th, 7th &

8th grade students) also won their right to go to State competition with a score of 3009 points.

On Jan. 25, some of the PCA archers attended a tournament in Columbia. PCA 9th grade student Jonathan Mickels, shot a score of 271 qualifying him to attend the State competition.

Students will continue weekly practices and tournaments to be ready to compete at the next level in March. Missouri has 290 schools in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) with 63,000 students being taught archery.

(Center) Feb. 20—In conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association, Ralls County Mutual Insurance Company wants you to have a safe heating season. A shortage in liquid propane has left many homeowners looking for alternative heating. Although space heaters can be a viable option, space heaters need space. That’s a key message from the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA), who are teaming up to reduce the risk of home heating fires. Space heaters annually account for one-third of reported U.S. home heating fires, and four out of five associated civilian deaths.

As part of their joint fire safety campaign, “Put

a Freeze on Winter Fires,” NFPA and USFA urge everyone to practice extreme caution when using space heaters this season. Keep things that can burn at least three feet away from space heaters, and create a three-foot “kid-free zone” around them. Make sure to use equipment that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory, and have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

• Place them on a solid, flat surface.

• Maintain a 36 inch clearance from the space heater and anything that can burn.

• Turn them off when you go to bed or leave the room.

• Use and purchase

heaters that carry the mark of an independent testing laboratory such as UL to make sure it is equipped with an automatic shut off so if they’re tipped over they will shut off.

• Plug power cords directly into outlets and never into an extension cord.

• Inspect for cracked or damaged, broken plugs or loose connections; replace before using.

Affordable Care Act Meeting Planned in New London The not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) and Pike County Memorial Hospital/Eastern Missouri Health Services will host an informational meeting on the Affordable Care Act in Ralls County.

The session is from 6 to 8 p.m. March 6 at the NECAC Ralls County Service Center at 411 Main in New London.

The presenters will be Tiffany Coleman-Dade and Kim Cunningham, licensed certified insurance exchange navigators

with Pike County Memorial Hospital/Eastern Missouri Health Services.

People who attend will learn more about health insurance options and how to sign up for a plan.

In addition, people may sign up at the NECAC Ralls County Service Center. Appointments may be made by calling (573) 985-2411.

NECAC is providing information about the law to residents in the Northeast Region consisting of Lewis, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Pike, Ralls, Shelby and Ran-

dolph Counties and in the Metro St. Louis West Region consisting of St. Charles, Lincoln, Warren, Montgomery and Franklin counties. Community meetings are also being set up in all counties.

Enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace began last Oct. 1 and runs through March 31.

Funding for this project was provided by The Missouri Foundation for Health, a philanthropic organization whose vision is to improve the health of the people in the communities it serves.

Double doubles rain versus South Shelby The Mark Twain Lady Tigers (14-11, 5-4 conference) went on a double double spry versus South Shelby in last game roundball action for a 5040 victory.

Mackenzie Grossmann (12 points, 13 boards), Michelle Epperson (14, 13) and Kyley Barnes (17, 11) all hit for double doubles (double digit scoring in two statistical categories).

Mark Twain got off to a quick start and led 1410 at the end of the first quarter. South Shelby won the second quarter 12-9 but Mark Twain led 23-22 at the half. The Lady Tigers took the third 16-6 but the Lady Cardinals took the final period 12-11 and the Lady Tigers won 50-40.

Barnes led the team in scoring while Grossmann and Epperson tied for the team high in boards with 13 apiece. As usual Alicia Cole led the team in assists while the steals lead was a four player tie.

OBITUARIES AND CHURCH NEWS Obituaries ✝ Orlie C. “Buck” Harbourn 1914-2014 Orlie C. “Buck” Harbourn, 99, of Hannibal, died at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Harbourn was born June 4, 1914, in Ilasco, to Asa D. and Florence Haynes Harbourn.

He was married to Margaret L. Albert on January 15, 1942 in Hannibal. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Bill A. Harbourn and Bob Harbourn, both of Hannibal, one sister, Nancy Garner, of Quincy, Ill., one sister in law, Senta Harbourn, of Green Valley, Ill., three grandchildren, six greatgrandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother; Orville “Buddy” Harbourn, who was killed in action in World War II, and brothers; John Harbourn, Howard Harbourn, and David Harbourn in infancy, and Fred Harbourn,and Thomas Harbourn and four sisters; Ruth Bates, Lydia Schmidt, Asael Dryden and Jessie Poage and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Harbourn was a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II as a staff sergeant. He worked as an analyst for Ilasco Cement Plant for over 40 years. He enjoyed bowling and gardening and liked watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He also liked hunting, trapping and mushroom hunting. Mr. Harbourn enjoyed life and loved his family. He is the oldest surviving member of the Saverton Ilasco United Methodist Church.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 28, at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home, in Hannibal. Rev. Dr. John M. Hayes will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park, in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Saverton Ilasco United Methodist Church or Ilasco Historical Society in care of the James O’Donnell Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Ron Knutelski, C.T. Harbourn, Bill J. Harbourn, Robert Smith, Larry Wright, and Greg Sims.

Matthew 5:38-48 was read by Shirley Levings for Pastor’s message on “Being Concerned For Others”. How do you invest in the lives of other people? It is easy to bless those that bless us, but do we reach out to strangers. Do we pray for those that hurt us? Do we have a prayer life to make life meaningful? These were questions Jesus asked his disciples when teaching them ways to glorify God. How are we answering to this?

Olivet Christian Church Jewell Zamzow opened the Feb. 23 service by welcoming everyone and giving the announcements.

Next Sunday will be the second special “Week of Compassion” offering. Rev Sutor will be on vacation from Feb. 25 through March 3. CWF will be held on March 4 and a study of Matthew will be continued. On March 5 there will be an Ash Wednesday Service at the First Christian Church in Palmyra. Daylight Savings Time (spring forward) will begin on March 9. Bible Study will resume March 10 (continue studying the Gospel of Mark). Christian Sympathy was extended to the family of Margie Roth and to the family of Keith Meyer. Those added to the prayer list were: Charlie Neuschafer, Don Smith, Barbara Clark and Wallace Hart. Billy Jo (Peterson) Schindler and infant son, Cooper Lee Schindler, were removed from the prayer list.

Candlelighters during the Prelude were Isaaic and Cassidy Clarkson.

Rev. Drew Sutor began the worship service with the responsive call to worship. The Short Christian’s Message was about being kind to one another. If someone hits you on one cheek, you should turn you head and present the other cheek. In the Old Testament it states “An Eye For An Eye”, but Jesus says “No”. Jesus is calling us to a higher level of living. Rev Sutor referenced this by using a Styrofoam Cup. He demonstrated decorating the cup on the outside with a bully coming up and smashing the pretty cup. You may

then respond by asking “Where is your cup?”.

Do not get mad, angry or even. Jesus says to let it go whether right or wrong.

Rev Sutor followed the children’s message with the silent, pastoral and Lord’s prayers.

The opening hymn was “We Sing the Greatness of God: Rev Sutor read the Old Testament scripture from Leviticus 19:1-2, 1118 and New Testament scripture from Matthew 5:38-48. The next hymn was “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed”.

Rev Sutor’s message was titled “Turn the Other Cheek”. He used the New Testament Scripture from Matthew. Does Jesus really mean to turn the other cheek? This is an excessive and extreme response. Can we take it time and time again? Do not do extreme retaliation or passive aggression. Jesus does not want us to be a punching bag either. He wants us to have passive resistance and walk away.

He would not ask us to do anything he would not do. Jesus sacrificed his life and this gives us hope and forgiveness to enter God’s Kingdom of Heaven.

The communion hymn was “When I Survey the Cross”.

Ron Peterson gave the elder’s prayer with Faye Whitaker, Bethany Clarkson, JoAnn Neuschafer and John Palmer serving as deacons. The closing hymn was “Jesus Calls Us’”. Rev Sutor gave the Benediction with “Let There Be Peace On Earth” was the Choral Congregational Response.

South Fork Prestyterian The Sunday, Feb. 23 services at South Fork Presbyterian church began with Patti Grimmett playing “I Would Be Like Jesus” followed by Pastor John Grimmett leading the Call to Worship from Psalm 121 and the Unison Prayer with all singing “Blessed Be The Name”, “Higher Ground”, “Doxology”, “More Like the Master” and “Lord, Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing”.

Perry Baptist Church For our services this past Sunday, Feb. 23, Brother Brian Meranda led our adult Sunday School lesson, teaching out of John 21, and how the Lord seeks to restore us when we’ve strayed from His path and wants us to return to faithful Christian discipleship when we’ve faltered and sinned Christian discipleship when we’ve faltered and sinned.

We had two singers, Leah Ott and Hayden Fankhauser. Both were truly blessed by the Lord as they gave praise to Jesus through song.

Brother Willis Jones preached out of 2 Timothy as he concluded preaching on his sermon series on the life of the Apostle Paul.

Brother Jones’s main point was how Paul and Timothy suffered a great deal through their ministry, but they kept the words of Jesus close to them when Jesus said “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his

life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 16:24-25) Paul understood that working for the things of the Lord lasts forever, and we should have that same attitude.

Brother Willis will be starting a new sermon series this next Sunday on the Minor Prophets of the Old Testament, starting with the Book of Hosea.

This book is a powerful testimony that even when we sin greatly, with true repentance and the turning away from our wicked ways, the Lord DOES provide a way to repent of our sins!

RALLS COUNTY FARM/RECORDS New London City Council New London City Council met at 7 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 10, in the Senior Citizen Center.

Although no one was present for Citizen’s Time, Jamie Tallman made contact with the city in regards to his property at Second and Strode Street, saying he had plans to complete his project and remove excessive dirt from the property. Josh Smith, owner of the property at 800 South Main Street, also made contact with the city saying he was not financially able to remove the house.

City Attorney Joe Brannon will send him a letter.

Brannon reported that Ginny Belle Lane is not a city street. Alderman White will contact Rep. Jim Hansen. There was a short discussion concerning the maintenance of the road.

Mark Bross, representing Klingner and Associates, addressed the council regarding the upcoming Bond Issue and public meetings. Public meetings have been scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 11 and March 26. Meeting places will be announced determined on availability. The council voted unanimously to allow Mayor Miller to sign a grant application for a Design Engineer Grant.

with MacLiney and Company, addressed the council regarding financial issues connected to the bond issue. Upon review of the contract by City Attorney Brannon, a motion to enter into a contract with MacLiney as financial advisors for the City of New London on this issue was passed unanimously.

The council reviewed an application submitted

by Marshall Miller to join the fire department. Mayor Miller appointed Miller to the VFD and a motion to approve the appointment was passed unanimously.

Fire Chief Jamie Quick asked the council to approve a 50/50 Conservation Grant for $5500 that was recently received. The council approved unanimously.

Police Chief Brad Sanders submitted an adjustment for City Fines for the council to review. A motion to submit the adjustment to the Court was passed unanimously.

Sanders also reported that officers would be attending training in March.

City Attorney Brannon reported that civil action has been filed regarding the Megown property.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 10.

Ralls County Traffic Stop Leads To Two Arrests On Sunday Feb. 16, 2014, at 7:43 p.m., a Ralls County Sheriff ’s Deputy initiated a motor vehicle stop of a vehicle on Highway 61 (north bound) near Oceanwave Road, for a traffic violation.

While the Deputy was confirming the driver and passenger identifications and checking for outstanding warrants the passenger in the vehicle fled the area on foot.

The Deputy requested additional manpower to respond to the scene along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. As a result a perimeter was established around the area and a request for a K-9 patrol dog was made to Monroe City Police Department.

When the Monroe City Officer and K-9 dog arrived at the scene a tracking search was incited for the subject.

As a result Jewel Brawley, 32 years of age from Vandalia, was located hidden in a wooded area within the search perimeter.

Brawley was processed and lodged in the Pike County Jail on an active civil warrant for his arrest.

At this time the matter has been referred to the

3D rendering floor plan for new elementary RCSBank lending school approved by R-II Board of Education staff has nearly 120 The Ralls County Board of education met in regular session at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, in the high school library.

In the absence of President Pete Hilgenbrinck, Vice-president Ron Evans called the meeting to order.

Students from both Center and New London Elementary joined to recognize board members and to present them with a book dedicated to each member. During the presentation the students recognized the role that board members play in our community. Students making this presentation were Kirsten Allen, Ashlyn Lipp, Autumn Arndt, Corbin Blackford, Kaycie and Clay Simpson, Cooper Hansen, Brayden Moss, Marli Liter and Destiny Weber. After the presentation board members and all those in at-

tendance enjoyed cake and punch. The cake was baked and decorated by the MTHS ProStart students. A video was shown on behalf of the students and staff at Mark Twain Junior-Senior High School.

Jacques Reynolds of Architechnics, Inc. presented a revised floor plan for the proposed centralized elementary school that will be constructed if the April 2014 bond issue is approved. Classroom configurations were reviewed and discussion was held about additional needs that were not in the existing plans which included a stage and bleachers. Also discussed were the location of specific classrooms, office space and playgrounds. Architechnics will develop a 3-D rendering, in addition to a revised floor plan. A motion to allow

Architechnics to revise the floor plan as discussed and to create a 3-D rendering was approved unanimously.

The date for the 2014 graduation was set for Sunday, May 18, with an alternate date of Friday, May 23, was approved with a 4-1-1 vote. Jason Liter voted No and Dan Clark abstained.

Superintendent Deanette Jarman shared information about the April bond issue. Community meetings to present information about the bond issue will be held at New London Elementary at 7 p.m. March 10; at the Multipurpose Building at Mark Twain at 7 p.m.

March 20; and at Perry City Hall at 7 p.m. March 24.

The TAB Committee (Teachers, Administrators, Board) met on Wednesday, Jan. 29. At this meeting the committee finalized the proposed

calendar for the 20142015 school year. Since the start date is more than 10 days before Labor Day, there will be a public meeting regarding the start date at the beginning of the 7 p.m. March 2014 board meeting.

Melanie Smith, Migrant, ELL and Homeless coordinator, presented the program evaluation report.

Board members reviewed the enrollment report, attendance report, Food Service report, and the transportation report.

During the Administrative Updates two resignation letters were shared with the board.

Terri Polster will retire at the end of the 2013-2014 school year after 33 years of teaching. Kacey Herzog submitted a letter of resignation effective at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.

Ralls County 911 board Ralls County Sheriff Report meets in special session The Ralls County 911 Board of Directors met in a special meeting Monday, Feb. 17, to discuss two items. The board opened two bids for snow removal and decided unanimously to accept the bid from D&J Construction of New London for $155.

The second item concerned the continued search for a new director.

The bottom line is that the Ralls County 911 Board of Directors has every intention of hiring a new site director and getting the county facility up and running on its own.

However, the recent round of interviews did not lead to a candidate suitable for the Ralls County director’s position. No one candidate had the right blend of experience and energy needed for the challenges of this particular facility.

In light of the situation Rich Adair proposed that the board seek further assistance from the Missouri 911 Directors Association in another round of applications.

The board discussed a proposed agreement between the two entities and voted unanimously to give the draft to Rodney Rodenbaugh.

The proposal will then be discussed at the March 4 meeting which will be held at 7 p.m. at the 911 building in New London.

The board acknowledges that the public may be impatient with the process of finding a director but feels it is imperative to find the right fit. “We all know what we’re looking for and we didn’t get it,” said board member Lowell Jackson.

procedures stalled? No. We will hire a director.”

NL Police Release New London Police discover burglary in progress On Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at approximately 9 p.m. officers of the New London Police Department pulled up on a burglary in progress at 309 S. Ralls Street. All items were recovered at the scene and two white males and one white female were detained and released pending charges. One female was arrested on active warrants and extradited by the Macon Police Department also with charges pending from this incident. The New London Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Ralls County Sheriff ’s Office and Monroe City K-9 Unit.

On Feb. 11 report of a subject dumping trash into dumpster on Mont Robe, subject located and issued a summons for trespassing and littering on private property; traffic stop for speed, summons issued for 40 in 25; officers drove up on a burglary in progress; female subject arrested on warrants.

On Jan. 21 at 8:51 p.m. deputies assisted Palmyra PD in locating and transporting a suspect in a pending investigation.

On Jan. 21 at 10:57 p.m. deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in Perry MO. Both males were arrested on domestic assault charges.

On Jan. 22 at 12:34 a.m.

William Callihan arrested and placed on a 24hour hold for domestic disturbance and drug paraphernalia.

On Jan. 22 at 11:56 a.m. deputy assisted the New London Fire Department and State Fire Marshall’s Office with a structure fire investigation.

On Jan. 21 at 2:58 p.m. deputy assisted a motorist with changing a flat tire.

On Jan. 22 at 9:37 p.m. a deputy assisted Marion Co. ambulance, New London Fire and New London PD with a medical call in New London.

On Jan. 23 at 2:59 p.m. deputies assisted HPD in a hit and run investigation.

On Jan. 23 at 10:39 p.m. deputies took a report of two individuals who had taken some alcohol from the Abel’s gas station in New London.

On Jan. 24 at 9:22 a.m. deputy assisted a Trooper with a traffic stop on Hwy 19.

On Jan. 24 at 10:26 a.m. deputy booked in a subject on a felony warrant.

On Jan. 24 at 11:05 a.m. deputy investigated an animal complaint call in the rural Hannibal area.

On Jan. 24 at 1:42 p.m. deputy took a property damage report that occurred in the rural New London area.

On Jan. 24 at 4:00 p.m. an attempt was made to gain information for a possible credit card in the name of Best Buy. However, it was discovered to be an attempt at fraud.

On Jan. 25 at 9:20 a.m. a deputy responded to Highway A near Hatch Road for reported cattle out on the highway.

Deputy was able to move cattle away from the roadway and notified the family of the owner.

On Jan. 25 at 11:34 a.m. a deputy responded to an address on Highway 79 in the Hannibal section of Ralls County for a reported grass fire.

Hannibal Rural Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.

On Jan. 25 at 2:13 p.m. a deputy responded to a residence in New London Gravel Road for found drug items along side the roadway. Items were removed and destroyed.

On Jan. 25 at 6:16 p.m. a deputy responded to a burglary call. No items were found to be missing.

On Jan. 26 at 12:01 a.m. a deputy received a report of a juvenile problem.

While responding to the incident, the deputy was called to a domestic disturbance in progress.

The New London Police Department handled the juvenile problem.

On Jan. 26 at 1:39 a.m. a deputy responded to a domestic disturbance on Harbor Town Road.

On Jan. 26 at 1:06 p.m. a deputy processing a prisoner for the Missouri Highway State Patrol at the Ralls County Sheriff ’s Office. The subject was processed and released after posting the required bond.

On Jan. 26 at 3:23 p.m. the Sheriff ’s Office was contacted about animal abuse.

On Jan. 26 at 4:15 p.m. deputies responded to the report of suspicious vehicle in New London.

The subject was found to be having vehicle trouble.

On Jan. 26 at 5:53 p.m. deputies responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on Highway H. MSHP conducted the investigation.

On Jan. 26 at 7:40 p.m. deputies responded to assist the Fire Department to a brush fire that had spread to a neighboring farm that ignited round hay bales.

On Jan. 27 at 9:03 a.m. deputies responded to a location on Old 79 for a report of a missing person. Upon deputies arrival it was discovered that the young female was not there. After contact with the owners of the residence it was learned that she had spent the night elsewhere and was fine. Nothing further at this time.

On Jan. 27 at 9:13 a.m. deputies responded to a residence on HH that had been entered illegally. Upon meeting the owners at the scene, it was determined that there were several items missing.

On Jan. 27 at 7:55 p.m. deputy conducted a traffic stop in rural Hannibal.

Citation was issued for speed.

On Jan. 28 at 12:14 a.m. traffic stop on Highway 19.

Warning for equipment.

Continued from Page 1A vides students the opportunity to showcase their love for food and cooking and to develop restaurant management skills.

Of the 29 participating teams, 28 competed in the culinary contest where they were responsible for preparing original recipes and creating attractive plated presentations. Eight teams representing high school, vocational and technical schools competed in the management contest, which focuses on creating restaurant plans, from the concept, menu items and pricing all the way to restaurant layout, and other key logistical strategies for new restaurants.

Schools are allowed to enter both the culinary and management divisions.

Judges from the foodservice industry and leading colleges and universities selected winning teams in the culinary and management contests.

Management Competition Results

First Place: Mark Twain High School, Center, Instructor: Linda Stinson.

2nd Place: Glendale High School, Springfield.

3rd Place Tie: Clayton High School, Clayton, and School of the Osage, Osage Beach.

The 2013 Mark Twain ProStart management team is composed of two members: Jill Alexander and Matt Taylor.

The management restaurant concept was: Alex & Taylor’s Kitchen.

ProStart - the NRAEF’s proven, high-impact program for high school students - reaches more than 90,000 students in 1,700 high schools across 45 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and U.S. military bases. It introduces them to the career opportunities available in the restaurant and food-service industry, and teaches them the restaurant management and culinary arts skills needed to launch their futures.

ProStart is a two-year

educational program supported by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation in partnership with state restaurant associations. The career-building program blends classroom learning with mentored work experience to teach high school students the management and culinary skills needed for a career in the restaurant and food-service industry. When students meet academic standards, complete a checklist of competencies, and work at least 400 hours in the industry, they are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce. * Special Note: This is the 2nd year Mark Twain has won in a row. They are the smallest school to compete in this contest. The other teams consist of four members on their management team. They took 5th place at Nationals last year when they competed.

Terry Hoyt of Laddonia, was in the right place at the right time on Nov. 20, 2012, to harvest this once -in-a-lifetime buck. The buck has 21 scorable points, non-typical, giving it a Boone & Crockett score of 222 inches.

The buck was estimated to be fiveand-a-half years old.

The buck weighed 183 pounds field dressed. The meat was donated to the “Share the Harvest” program. Taxidermy services were provided by Tim Hill, Tri-State Taxidermy, New London.

The deer will be on display at the Missouri Whitetail Classic in Columbia on March 15 and 16.

It currently ranks in the Top 20 in the state of Missouri.
