Paris R-II FBLA installs members The Paris R-II FBLA held their annual New Member Induction and Officer Installation Ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 11, in the R-II Cafeteria to a standing room only crowd of family and friends. Chapter President Payton Gruber welcomed the assembled. “Thank you for attending tonight’s ceremony,” said President Gruber. The organization’s officers were introduced by name and job description by FBLA sponsor Barb Mason in a moving candlelight ceremony. The officers described the meaning of F (Future), B (Business), L (Leaders), A (America). During a slideshow presentation Sponsor Mason gave the crowd an overview of the FBLA emblem including the Eagle, Service, Progress, Future, Business, Leaders and America. “All these pieces attached together stand for FBLA,” said Mason. All officers and members, in unison, recited the FBLA Creed. - I believe education is the right of every person.
I believe the future depends on mutual understanding and cooperation among business, industry, labor, religious, family, and educational institutions, as well as people around the world. I agree to do my utmost to bring about understanding and cooperation among all of these groups. I believe every person should prepare for a useful occupation and carry on that occupation in a manner that brings the greatest good to the greatest number. I believe every person should actively work toward improving social, political, community, and family life. I believe every person has the right to earn a living at a useful occupation. I believe every person should take responsibility for carrying out assigned tasks in a manner that brings credit to self, associates, school, and community. Safe Driving Week helps identify accident dangers
Most days, drivers of commercial trucks and passenger vehicles travel safely, but the unsafe and aggressive driving behaviors of a few results in unnecessary danger. That was the point of Operation Safe Driver Week – between October 14-20 – drivers of big trucks and passenger vehicles need to respect each other, pay attention and avoid unsafe behavior that could result in a crash. During Homecoming Week the students at Paris R-II Schools, under the guidance of organizing teacher David Freitag, held numerous activities including trivia contests and a seat belt check before school one day Missouri law enforcement agencies paid special attention to commercial vehicle drivers’ compliance with safety regulations. They will also watch for unsafe and aggressive driving behaviors by both passenger and commercial drivers on highways and local roads. “No matter how large a vehicle they operate, a driver’s first responsibility is to operate safely,” said Jan Skouby, MoDOT Motor Carrier Services director. “But defensive drivers go a step further. They look at the traffic
around them and ask – are those drivers paying attention? If not, pay more attention to them. Can they see you? If not, be sure to make yourself visible.” Commercial vehicle drivers urge those who drive smaller vehicles to take extra care driving around trucks. “Truck drivers watch traffic
carefully – for your safety. A big truck can’t make the same sudden moves and stops as a car and the blind spots are much larger,” said Skouby. “In a situation that pits a car versus a large truck, truckers know the car is likely to get the worst of it.” Safety experts suggest a few Continued to page 11
According to Monroe County Clerk Sandra Francis team voting will be provided prior to the Tuesday, Nov. 6, General Election. Anyone who is shut in and unable to go to the polls may request the “Absentee Team” to visit them in their home or they may contact the County Clerk’s Office to be placed on the permanent disabled list. Missouri Election Law 115.284 (I ) establishes an absentee voting process to assist persons with permanent disabilities in the exercise of their voting rights.
Clerk Francis urges anyone who would like to be placed on the list to contact her office by either mail or telephone. Those people who are already on the permanent list will remain on the list and do not need to contact the office. Individuals wanting more information on either of the above need to contact the County Clerks Office, 300 North Main, Room 204 or telephone 660-327-5106. The Absentee team will visit area nursing homes on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

The Friends of Dulaney Memorial Library forms The Friends of the Dulaney Memorial Library organization is up and running. During an organizational meeting on Monday, Oct. 15, visitors were introduced to the officers and heard a presentation from librarian Sue Mattingly. Friends of the Dulaney Memorial Library officers include President Ina Rae Brazeale, VicePresident Anita Ness, Secretary Jan Wiley and Treasurer Ruth Mallory. Other directors include Nadine McKinney, Mary Beth Mitchell and Jane Callis with supporting librarians Sue Mattingly and Sally Blakemore. It was noted that the group would help augment the purchase

of necessary items when needed by the Library Board of Directors and help with activities and presentations. According to the bylaws the purpose of the organization is to: maintain an association of persons interested in libraries; focus public attention on the library; stimulate the use of the library resources and services; receive and encourage gifts, endowments and bequests to the library; and support and cooperate with the library in developing library services and facilities within the community. It was noted that the new organization will hold an annual meeting in April of each year. Memberships are now available ranging from an individual membership, family memberships up to a “Rare Book” membership. Paris Librarian Sue Mattingly
gave the Friends of the Library meeting attendees a short overview of the library. She noted that currently the library has 27,210 items to loan to its patrons. Mattingly explained that the library hosts a teen room (with PlayStation 2), has seven computers for patron use and it offers Internet wireless service. Besides its books the library subscribes to five newspapers – The Moberly Monitor Index, The Monroe County Appeal, The Lake Gazette, The Mexico Ledger and the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
