The Paris Area Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with other local organizations proudly presents “Christmas Is In The Air” which will take place Saturday, Dec. 1 - Thursday, Dec. 6 Events include: Saturday, Dec. 1, will be “Breakfast with Santa” from 8-10 a.m., at the Paris Elementary School cafeteria. The event will feature donuts, drinks and pictures with Santa will be available. Breakfast will cost $2 and pictures with Santa will cost $2 each. To visit with Santa is free (you can just come for the visit). Santa’s elves (like those pictured at left) will be busy serving breakfast and passing out books and goodies to all the little visitors. R-II Board of Education accepts two resignations, approves audit
Paris R-II Board of Education President Libby Williams called the regular November board meeting to order at 6:02 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 15. All seven members answered roll call. Prior to the meeting the administration and board members toured the new construction areas of the district. The agenda was approved, as was the consent agenda unanimously. Program Evaluations: The Special Education program evaluation was presented to the board members by Special Education Director Nancy Henke and Special Education Teacher Kelly Williams. A comprehensive overview of the Technology program evaluation was presented to the board members by Technology Barb Mason. The Library/Media program evaluation was presented to the Board by Julie Johnston. The Guidance and Counseling program evaluation was presented to the board members by Secondary Counselor Lisa Youse. December Graduates: The board members were presented a list of students meeting district requirements for graduation that have requested to graduate in December 2012. After discussion the board members voted unanimously to approve the list of December graduates as presented contingent on them completing graduation requirements. Surplus Property: The board members unanimously authorized bids for the freezer as surplus property. The board members also authorized the sale of all surplus property in the stor-
age room in the administration building. Audit Report: The board members unanimously accepted the audit report for 2011-2012 school year and authorized the advertisement of audit bids for the 2012-2013 school year. Superintendent’s Report and Communications: District Superintendent Chris Johnson presented the Superintendent’s report to the Board of Education members. It was noted that the next regular board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 6 p.m. Superintendent Johnson informed the board members that the Filing for the Board election would start Tuesday, Dec. 11. There are two positions up this year – current board members Raymond Batsell and Glenda Miller.
Principal Reports Elementary Principal Wendi Wood presented the Elementary School report to the Board of Education members and Secondary Principal John Wiggans presented the junior high and high school reports including student activities and sports schedules. Reported out of an approved closed session: The board members accepted the resignation of Donald Ross (custodian) effective immediately; accepted the resignation of Donna Pruden (art teacher) effective Dec. 31; offered a parttime custodial work agreement to Marcella Menefee; and offered a full-time custodial work agreement to Ed Bordeleau. With no further business the board members adjourned at 9 p.m.
The Thanksgiving holiday is usually one of travel and cheer. Unfortunately, it can also be a very dangerous time on Missouri roads. During the 2011 Thanksgiving holiday there were 1372 traffic crashes, and four fatalities on Missouri’s roadways. “The sheer number of crashes, injuries and deaths during this holiday are startling enough, but worse yet, most of those deaths and injuries could have been
prevented,” said Leanna Depue, executive chair of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety. “With more people traveling, the possibility for traffic incidents increases, but there are many things motorists can do to keep themselves safer on the roads.” Before you head to Thanksgiving dinner, the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety urges you to plan your safe travel ahead of time. Thursday, Dec. 6, will be the annual Christmas Parade. The theme for this year’s parade is “Carolling Around the Christmas Tree” and prizes will once again be awarded in two categories float and non-float with each first place prize being $50 (donated by Wheeler Auction and Agnew Funeral Home) and the second place prize being $25 (donated by Elk Fork Campground and Shelter Insurance - Russ Thomas). Anyone and everyone are welcome to join in on the fun and participate in the parade - for more information on the parade or to sign up contact the numbers below. While enjoying the parade, residents will be able to view the Christmas lights placed throughout the downtown area courtesy of Signature Masonary and Jonesy’s. Also, the Monroe County Courthouse will light the
courthouse Christmas lights as the parade passes by. The chamber soup/chili supper will be held from 5-7:30 p.m., at the Paris Senior Citizen’s Center. There will be a multitude of donated items to win at the supper. The chamber will conduct their silent auction until 7 p.m. As always, one-half of all proceeds from the Paris Area Chamber of Commerce event will go to Christmas Is Caring. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy this joyous celebration of the season. The Christmas Is Caring annual sign-up is happening now at the NECAC office in Paris. Individuals can sign-up now through Thursday, Dec. 6. This year distribution will be Friday, Dec. 14, from 9-11 a.m., at the Paris First Baptist Fellowship Hall. Any donations can be mailed to UMB Bank, 301 N. Main, Paris MO 65275 or to John Gilmore, 201 S. Main, Paris MO 65275. During the 2011 Christmas Is Caring the organization spent approximately $7,000 on the annual event. So far this year their starting balance is just $1,000. “We need everyone’s help,” said organizer John Gilmore. Donations for toys and clothing for children may be mailed to

Mr. Gilmore asks that residents look at the “for sale by” date on any food items donated. If you can’t use it neither can they. Food good donations can be brought to the Baptist Church on Monday, Dec. 10 through Tuesday, Dec. 11, at noon. Please no food be brought after noon, on Tuesday, Dec. 11. According to both Gilmore and Barton, additional donations may be needed this year as there is additional sign-ups. Half of all monies raised during the Chamber promotion is donated to CIC.
