College students use holiday time wisely

THURSDAY, Dec. 20, 2012

VOLUME 145, NO. 51

College students, military members - holiday time a good time to renew licenses and tags

The Missouri Department of Revenue is reminding college students, members of the armed forces and others returning home for the holidays to think about renewing their driver licenses and license plates while back in Missouri. “When college students are home on their winter break or military personnel are on leave, it’s an opportune time for them to review whether their driver licenses or license plates are about to expire,” said Missouri Department of Revenue Director Alana M. Barragán-Scott. “While they are in Missouri, it’s a good idea to take care of those issues to avoid future hassles when driver licenses or license plates lapse.” Barragán-Scott noted that many college-age students have driver licenses that expire when they turn 18 and 21 years old. There are about 358,000 licensed drivers aged 21 years old and younger in Missouri. In most cases, driver licenses can only be renewed in person at one of 182 local license offices in Missouri. Drivers can find the nearest local office by visiting the Department of Revenue’s website, www.dor.mo.gov.

Driver license renewal notices are mailed to the last known addresses of licensed drivers about two months before the licenses expire. Missouri allows renewal of driver licenses by mail only for active duty members of the armed forces and their dependents who are temporarily out of state. Qualified applicants must complete and send a renewal form along with other required documents and fees. Questions about driver license renewals can also be directed to dlbmail@dor.mo.gov or (573) 751-4600. Meanwhile, license plates can be renewed through the mail, in person at a local license office, or in many cases, online. Renewal notices are mailed to a vehicle’s owner about two months before the plates expire. To renew a license plate online, drivers can visit plates.mo.gov, and will need their Personal Identification Number which is included on the registration renewal form. Those who are not eligible include citizens of counties that are not participating in the program, and owners of Continued to page 4
