Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Sergeant Sue Walker saw what she perceived to be a problem, namely bullying, and did something about it. The first thing Sergeant Walker did was to hold a well-attended, comprehensive presentation at the Paris R-II Elementary School on bullying for parents and staff in December 2012. Next, Sergeant Walker brought in Phil Chalmers, a nationally known authority on school shootings and the cause and effects of bullying. Chalmers and musical guest rapper LG Wise held a series of assemblies on Friday, March 1. First the duo presented the Chalmers “True Lies” assembly at Madison at 9 a.m., followed by the same
presentation at the Paris R-II High School, at 1 p.m. In the evening, at 7 p.m., Chalmers and Wise repeated the assembly this time for parents, staff and any other interested parties. Chalmers, who also is a crime television personality, discussed bullying, crime prevention, teen violence and substance abuse. His stated goal is “to destroy the lies that are killing this young generation and bring truth in an in-your-face manner that works.” Chalmers has interviewed more than 200 teen killers, school shooters, mass murderers, serial killers and sexual predator killers. Chalmers noted that he has appeared on the Montel Williams Show, debated
the Insane Clown Posse on the Howard Stern Show and appeared on several crime shows on cable television. Chalmers’ student presentation was fast-moving, factually based and is definitely geared to the younger, MTV and video game generation. Also on hand was guest rapper LG Wise who presented his moving testimony to the assembled mixed in with some hip hop style rhymes. The evening presentation was a more of a, “parents this is what you need to understand” assembly. Chalmers presented a laundry list of statistics to balance his discussion including: Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each
year. Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. One in seven students in grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. Fifty-six percent of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school. Nationwide, over twothirds of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying, with a high percentage of students believing that adult help is infrequent and ineffective.
