IM HANSEN TO HOLD TOWN MEETING

40th District Representative Jim Hansen will hold a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, June 27, at 7 p.m., at the Public Library, in Paris. Rep. Hansen has completed his first session as our local representative to the House, in Jefferson City. He will give a summary of what bills have passed and which ones that may need to brought up again in the next year. Some of what will be discussed: Gun Control, Farm Bills, Taxes, Common Core Education Bills and Health Care. The public and all concerned citizens are invited to attend. There will be a question and answer period so come and participate in this important Town Hall.

MONROE BAPTIST HYMN SING JUNE 22

The hymn Sing for Monroe Baptist Association will be held at Mt. Airy Baptist Church on Saturday, June 22, at 7 p.m. A BBQ will take place at 5:30 p.m. Everyone welcome, bring a dish!

SENIOR CENTER CLOSED JULY 5

The Paris Senior Citizens’ Center will be OPEN on Thursday, July 4, but will close in observance of the holiday on Friday, July 5. The Thursday menu will feature the usual Friday Fried Chicken lunch. See page 5 next week for menu.

Daughters of American Revolution, American Legion celebrate Flag Day The James Monroe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in association with the American Legion Post 221 of Paris, held their third annual Flag Day ceremony on the northwest corner of the Monroe County courthouse lawn on Thursday, June 14, at 9 a.m. A beautiful day and solid local resident attendance of the public made for a great scene. Those present from the DAR chapter included Registrar/Corresponding Secretary Jan Smiley Carter, Treasurer Dorothy Walser, Recording Secretary Annette Azdell, Chyerl Varvil, Sarah Painter Crow, and Wilma Hase. Those representing American Legion Post 221 were Commander Lloyd Miller, J.D. Long, Harold Wilson, Bob Mitchell, George Hunter, Jerry Holmes, Danny Purdy, Larry Castleman and Ron Turnbough. Carter welcomed everyone to the ceremony celebrating the history of the American Flag. She then led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Hase and Azdell reading a history of Flag Day. Azdell and Crow presented a poetry reading entitled I Am The Flag by Ruth Apperson Rouss. Bill Hase, husband of chapter member Wilma Hase, led the group singing of the National Anthem, God Bless America, and You’re a Grand Old Flag. Carter presented retired American flags to Commander

the American Legion guard fired three volleys. Carter dismissed the ceremony reminding all to fly their flags at home and at their businesses and to always remember how important the flag is to all of us.

This year’s schedule of events includes: Opening ceremonies will feature a short introduction by Relay For Life of Monroe County Chairperson Ali Rentschler. Taylor Ross will perform the National Anthem and then there will a Survivor Lap immediately followed by a Caregiver Lap. Following those laps performances are featured with artists Becky Blackaby followed by Joyful Sound (Diane Hickman and Brenda Duncan) and then more from Taylor Ross, and finishing with some of the local youth. The Silent Auction will be open from 6-9 p.m., and closing promptly at 9 p.m. At approximately 9 p.m. will be the always-inspiring luminaria service. During the night there will also be a

dunking booth, face painting, jail, golden throne and several youth friendly activities including theme laps and scavenger hunts. Food will be available including fish and chips, baked potato bar, pulled pork and coleslaw, deep fried Oreo’s and pickles, funnel cakes, walking taco’s, beef and noodles, breakfast at midnight and much more. “New this year to go along with the 2013 theme of “Movies Under The Stars” we will have a midnight movie on the big screen,” said Chairperson Rentschler “Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and join us.” “We hope to see everyone at this year’s Relay For Life of Monroe County,” said chairman Rentschler. Ann Neubauer to be guest speaker for 2013 Relay For Life of Monroe County

Ann Neubauer will be the 2013 Relay For Life of Monroe County guest speaker. Neubauer resides and teaches at South Shelby and recently completed her treatment for breast cancer and is eager and very determined to find a cure. The 2013 Relay For Life of Monroe County will be held thisweekend, Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23, at the Paris Courthouse This year’s theme is “Movies Under the Stars.” This annual American Cancer Society signature event begins at 6 p.m., with the Survivor Lap and ends at 6 a.m. the following morning. The goal of the participating teams is to have at least one walker on the track at all times. The exception to this rule is during the somber and emotional luminary ceremony held at approximately 9 p.m. Then the track is cleared and food sales are shut down while the names of
