The North East Community Action Corporation started the winter heating season Oct. 1 with $712,000 for utility assistance. Recently, less than $50,000 remained. Last year, NECAC did not run out of funding until March, when the agency had $1.5 million. The only option is for people to apply for LIHEAP, the LowIncome Home Energy Assistance Program. Unfortunately, those who’ve already received LIHEAP funding since Oct. 1 cannot get it again. LIHEAP offers a one-time payment of anywhere from $45 to $450 per household, depending
upon the type of heating source. Unlike in previous years, federal lawmakers have not expressed an interest in providing additional winter heating assistance funding. NECAC awarded home rehabilitation funding North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) President and Chief Executive Officer Don Patrick has announced that the agency has been awarded $192,763 in Missouri Housing Development Commission (MHDC) HERO program funding to provide major renovations at 10 homes. NECAC is a 12-county area not-
for-profit social service, community health and public housing Community Action Agency that administers and operates programs for the low-income, elderly, youth, handicapped and disadvantaged through partnerships, contracts and grants with government agencies, private businesses and other non-profit groups. NECAC is one of 19 non-profit Community Action Agencies in Missouri and part of a national network of 980 agencies. MHDC announced approval of the project at its annual funding meeting Jan. 11 in Columbia. Continued to page 4

ary 2012. It began as a challenge. Before the game students from the two schools competed to see who could sell the most pink T-shirts and hoodies. This year paper basketballs were added to the fundraising campaign. The basketballs cost $1.00 and were mounted on the walls of the gym in Paris and in the cafeteria in Madison to honor survivors or in memory. Last year over 600 shirts and hoodies were sold and over $4,000 raised. This year’s campaign was a huge success according to Lauren Embree who gave a moving speech
during halftime of the boys game. “Thank you to all the participants from both Paris and Madison who made this a success,” said Embree to the standing room only crowd. Co-organizer John DeOrnellis informed the Paris Senior Class and Madison Sixth Grade Class that they led their respective schools in shirt sales. Both school bands performed for the crowd during the spirited games. Monroe County Cancer Supporters President John Turner thanked the assembled for their help and support in trying to stamp out cancer.
