A.R.D. Consultancy commit to Amy Connell in her quest for 2020 Tokyo Olympic glory A.R.D. Consultancy have confirmed the ongoing support of Scottish 2020 Karate Olympic hopeful, Amy Connell. The commitment will see Amy obtain the financial backing necessary for her to have a legitimate shot at successfully qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Andrew Dawkins, Director of A.R.D Consultancy, is excited to be an integral part of Amy’s Olympic journey; “A.R.D. Consultancy have had a long and proud tradition of delivering quality financial and mortgage advice to clients within Central Scotland and we feel that our relationship with Amy Connell compliments our own beliefs and standards. Amy’s story is truly inspirational, and we feel privileged to be able to help her. We look forward to being there every step of the way as Amy embarks on her Tokyo 2020 Olympic journey!” Terry Connell, Chief Instructor at Shitokai Scotland and President of the Scottish Karate Governing Body, had the following to say about the partnership. “In A.R.D. Consultancy we have a sponsor who recognises adversity and the desire to succeed whatever the odds. Indeed, these characteristics are synonymous with A.R.D. Consultancy who themselves have surmounted many challenges on their way to create a vibrant and very successful consultancy business. We have a sponsor that recognises the value of sport, not just for our youth, but sport for all.” Amy Connell is looking forward to the future and has high hopes in the lead up to the 2020 Olympic Games. “I am very excited for this new sponsorship with A.R.D. Consultancy. Financially, this partnership will allow me to take my sport to the next level and follow my passion, which without the support of ARD would be challenging. I am looking forward to working with such a great team of people and for all the success that lay ahead.”

Shitokai would like to express their gratitude to ARD Consultancy for sponsoring the publication of this handbook 2

INTRODUCTION Shitokai Scotland is a traditional and highly respected club within Scotland and indeed Great Britain having been recently crowned British champions. A dynamic and well-disciplined karate, blending modern Sports Science with traditional methods, which give us a unique blend of Karate, one rarely seen outside of Japan. Having our headquarters in Japan also gives our members a wonderful opportunity to travel, study and educate themselves at the highest level. Key words such as respect and discipline play a huge part in our philosophy and the benefits to one’s self-confidence and general health have a positive impact on all who participate. All our Scottish Karate Governing Body [SKGB] qualified coaches are PVG checked, promote positive coaching, have completed an extensive coaching programme and hold an SKGB national coaching license. Teachers often comment on how the discipline has a dramatic effect on their student’s performance at school with improved concentration levels. Parents and mature members who join are often the most enthusiastic so we encourage all ages to participate and enjoy the benefits of exercise whilst learning self-defence. Parents can train at the same time as the children at the Renfrew club: Tuesdays 6-7pm and Saturday mornings 9.15-10.15am where the adults are separated from the children receiving a more mature content. Junior students [under 16s] are requested to engage in tidy up duties before class. This helps with tidiness and self-discipline offering a more hygienic and safer training environment.

MEMBERS GUIDE Member Requirements We require each student to license within 14 days of joining; this annual fee includes your license book and membership of Shitokai Scotland. It also permits the student to participate in an Scottish Karate Governing Body [SKGB] approved grading system, and advance through the coloured belts to black belt and eligibility to participate in future coaching qualifications.

Karate suits and Equipment Embroidered Karate suits with our Japan logo are available at the club. Please refrain from purchasing non-conforming Karate suits. The club enjoys a professional appearance in keeping with our image and our bespoke embroidered Japan logo suits provide that. There is no rush to purchase, take your time as T-shirt and jogging bottoms are recommended in the early stages. When you have achieved a strong grasp of the basics and are confident in your skills we will discuss progressing you to a more advanced level of Karate. This may include light sparring where protective equipment is mandatory: Body Armour and Hand Mitts.

Sport Karate We have Scottish, British and Commonwealth Karate Federation gold medallists in our club and supply the national team with many of its top fighters, having recently won the British championships by topping the British Championships medal table. Should the student show an interest in competitive karate we speak with the family before collectively agreeing to progress and introduce them to our uniquely successful elite training programme, which includes sports science and private tuition. We have Scotland’s head national Kata coach, Stephanie Connell, and Martin Douglas national Kumite coach, supported by former national champions Jeannette O’Neill and Lawrence Clifford. We also have Scotland`s chief referee, Robert McQueen, in our association giving our competitors a rare insight into how our top officials operate. All competitors training takes place at the Renfrew club.

Etiquette - Basics (Full details at www.shitoryu.co.uk) • Strive To Be On Time

• Karate Suit (Gi) Clean

• Students may wear a white T shirt under the Gi jacket

• No Jewellery (Injury Risk) • Discipline and respect is key • Keep License Up To Date

• Train Regularly • Bow when entering/leaving • Late arrivals – Seiza and wait the Dojo (training room) Sensei acknowledgement

Child Safety: We operate a meet and greet policy for the children and respectfully ask that all children be handed over in class and collected at the end of class. Please do not wait in the car park, as it is often difficult to identify which child is associated with which car. Any parent who permits their child to make their own way home must inform the coach. Child safety is our absolute priority and your compliance with this request is greatly appreciated. 5

Karate Kids [3-6 years old] Classes are designed as an introduction to Karate and its disciplines. We focus on concentration, balance and co-ordination skills whilst developing and maintaining joint flexibility and muscle toning. Research into this type of programme by a joint university study found that these preparatory classes act as a wonderful platform for the children, giving them a vital sringboard in their formative years. We also have some fun as well!

Junior [7-11 years] Classes are aimed at a primary school mentality. Discipline, etiquette and respect play a key role in our karate. The children will develop their physical skills and become tougher mentally . This training will prove beneficial not only in their karate but will manifest itself in their studies and social behaviour. At this stage they have the opportunity, if they so wish, to be introduced to sport karate. Shitokai has produced many of Scotland`s top young fighters. A tribute to the dedication of these young athletes and high level of instruction provided.

Adult / Youth Classes are taken very seriously indeed. The youths are amongst the finest in Britain and are universally regarded as such as exemplified by our list of Scottish and British champions. They perform on the European and World stage, as do our top competitor adults. They have represented their country at European and World championships, in cities such as Tokyo, Paris, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, Milan, Berlin, Shanghai and Rio De Janeiro to name a few. It should be stressed that only our elite athletes compete, which is around 5%; this leaves 95% who practise karate for other reasons. These reasons include self-defence, health, fitness, social inclusion and a fascinating insight into the unique culture of Japan and Japanese martial arts. These students will experience a newfound confidence, which will prove beneficial in all walks of life.

6

Family Mums, dads and wider family of a more mature age who join often enjoy it more than the children they encourage to take part. There is self-defence and general fitness as well as a welcome me time in a busy life. The first step in the hardest but we love to see you make that move, it may change your outlook on life and give you a better sense of well-being.

Disability/ASN – Para Karate We are proud to support Additional Support Needs Karate and have a bespoke class at Renfrew Leisure Centre on a Thursday 4.45-5.30pm where we work on hand-eye co-ordination, concentration levels, physical mobility and general fitness. Karate - A Brief History There are 4 main Karate styles in the world today with Shito-Ryu and Shotokan particularly dominant. There are of course many variations on these main styles also, many of which have developed through the years. Below is a brief description of the 4 main styles, namely Shotokan, Wado-Ryu, Goju-Ryu and Shito-Ryu which is of course the style practised within Shitokai Scotland. Shitokai is a branch of Shitoryu which attempts to hold true to the teachings and Kata of the founder Japanese sensei Kenwa Mabuni.

Shinto-Ryu In 1928 Sensei, Kenwa Mabuni, settled in Japan and began to teach his distinctive style in the Osaka area. Mabuni had studied two diverse styles: Shorin-ryu under Itosu and Naha-te under Higaonna. His personal style combined the two which he designated Shitoryu and founded the Shito-kai school, which is the style of karate we practise today. Shito-Ryu is noted primarily for its for is highly technical Katas

Shotokan In the late 1800`s jutsu was still an exclusively Okinawan pursuit. However one local master, Gichin Funakoshi was in the process of creating a more popular version termed Karate [Kara-empty te: hand]. An educated and cultured man he had strong views on character development and the virtues of self discipline. Funakoshi was the natural choice to represent the island at a demonstration in Kyoto, Japan staged in 1917. Funakoshi is regarded as the founder of modern karate.

Goju-Ryu 1930 Chojun Miyagi founded his Go” meaning hard and “Ju” meaning soft style of karate still very popular in Okinawa. The Goju-Ryu emphasis is placed on combining soft circular blocking techniques with quick strong counter attacks delivered in rapid succession.

Wado-Ryu Wado-ryu, “way of peace and harmony”, was founded by Hironori Ohtsuka, a student of Gichin Funakoshi in 1939. This style of Karate combines basic movements of Jujitsu with techniques of evasion, putting a strong emphasis on softness and the way of harmony or spiritual
