INTERVIEW
To Thee I wed New bride recalls journey from love to marriage By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
L
ong before she added “Mrs.” to her name, Krystal Meyer had a premonition of where her life was heading with the man she ultimately married. During a trip to the North Georgia mountains with then-boyfriend (and now husband) Jonathan Meyer, Krystal came across an entry in a visitor’s log left by a couple who had recently stayed at the cabin. The couple had first stayed at the cabin in Helen years earlier while college students, and had returned years later — now married with children. “I flipped open the [guest book] and this was the first entry I saw,” said Krystal. “I thought ‘oh my gosh’ this could be our life … it was so cool.” The fact that the couple attended the University of Florida, where Jonathan graduated, made it even more significant. “I took a picture of the post and still have it on my phone,” Krystal said. 6 | northsidewoman.com | february2019
After dating two years, Krystal and Jonathan married in October 2018. They now live in Cumming with their two dogs. Both work for LifeTime Fitness — Krystal at the Johns Creek location as the team development manager, and Jonathan as the personal training manager at the Sandy Springs location. Originally from California, Krystal graduated from the University of Iowa in 2015 with a degree in neurobiology, and moved after graduation to Georgia where her family had relocated. “I was not going to stay where it snowed (in Iowa), so I came ‘home’ to where my family was,” she said. She developed an interest in fitness and health while in college, and put those skills and her degree to work at LifeTime. At the time, Jonathan was also employed at LifeTime, but living in Brookhaven. Their paths never crossed at work, but they had a mutual friend who would bring the two together. “He told Jonathan about me, but Jonathan lived in Brookhaven and said he’s not driving all that way to meet a girl who didn’t even use Facebook,” she laughed. Eventually, Jonathan made the trek to North Fulton, and Krystal said their first meeting was the cliché scenario of love at first sight. “He came down on a Friday night … I opened the door and there’s this person in front of me who I knew was the one,” she said. “We went to dinner, never stopped talking and we’ve been inseparable ever since.” Two years later, Jonathan pulled off the ultimate surprise engagement that went off nearly flawlessly — save for a few unexpected
hitches that made the event even more memorable. Jonathan created a fake wedding event in Savannah in fall 2017 for a “friend” Krystal had never met — complete with wedding invitations — to make her think they were going to Savannah for the wedding. “So we’re in Savannah going to the rehearsal dinner and I’m texting my family that I’m not going to know anyone there,” said Krystal, completely unaware her entire family was in Savannah as part of the engagement. As the couple strolled through Forsyth Park, toward what Krystal believed was the venue for the rehearsal dinner, Jonathan’s demeanor began to change. At the famed water fountain in the park, Jonathan dropped to his knees and proposed, while family members rushed in to greet the couple. “I was so surprised and I can’t recall anything other than nodding yes,” she said. Unbeknownst to Jonathan, the six-page Power Point presentation he sent to everyone of how the event would unfold failed to take into account the location he selected for the proposal was hosting a wedding reception at the targeted time. “So everyone is on the wrong side of the fountain and he’s texting everyone at the last minute of the change in plans,” she laughed, recalling the vision of her mom running through the bushes to be there in time. “It was perfect.” A year later, the couple was married at the Cotton Gin in Hiram in an intimate ceremony with 75 close friends and family in attendance. ■

HER STYLE PHOTOS PROVIDED BY AMIE FAGG AT VICKERY PHOTOGRAPHY
What to wear for your engagement pictures By LORI WYNNE Contributing Writer
C
ongratulations on your engagement! Now, it’s time to record this wonderful occasion in your new life together. Choosing what to wear in your engagement pictures should not be the subject of your first disagreement as an engaged couple. To answer questions about engagement photo attire, I enlisted the help of professional photographer Amie Fagg, a Cumming resident who owns Vickery Photography (www.vickeryphotography.net). For 10 years, she has been taking pictures of milestone moments for clients throughout the nation. “I capture relationships in my photography,” Fagg said. With my expertise in wardrobes, and Fagg’s expertise in creating pictures that express a couple’s style, here are our tips for successful engagement pictures that represent your unique style and relationship. 8 | northsidewoman.com | february2019
Location
Choose your location first, based on your style. Will it be on the beach, a cityscape or rustic farm truck (which Fagg says is now going out of style)? Are you and your betrothed outdoorsy? Where did you have your first date, or where did the proposal take place? These may be great locations that personalize your engagement pictures. If you are not sure of your style, Fagg suggests educating your palette by going on Pinterest and searching for engagement pictures that you like and that resonate with you as a couple. As a professional photographer, she helps her clients find the perfect location because she wants them to succeed.
Match outfits with your location
Focus on wearing something that matches the style of your location. Do not wear a sequin skirt in front of a rustic barn. The focus will only be on your skirt and not on the sparkle in your eyes. Use very neutral backgrounds and locations if choosing a textured fabric in your outfit. Outdoor locations usually call for more casual attire, but that doesn’t

mean just jeans and a T-shirt. Your man can still wear a sport coat, but make sure it is a more casual cut and made of a casual fabric such as linen, suede or canvas.
Layers
Layers are extremely important and can be used as props. For example, your man can take off the jacket and sling it over his shoulder in a flirty pose with you. Jackets or vests for men can camouflage figure flaws, as well. A thin lacy duster or sheer scarf can also add feminine interest without distracting from your pre-bridal glow.
Color
Wear solid colors. Avoid prints and bright neon colors. You want the focus to be on your faces, not on your red pants. When choosing colors, consider your location colors (red stone cliffs or white sand and blue water). Use neutral colors to bring attention to your faces. The two of you can coordinate, but not match. When asked about wearing colors that suggest the wedding colors, Fagg was against it. She suggests choosing a color scheme for your engagement pics that would also complement your bedroom color and décor. Fagg says that if you insist on wearing a signature color, wear it head to toe.
Movement
Fagg suggests choosing clothes that create movement. For example, consider a flowing hemline in a dress that can catch a breeze. She also suggests that you wear pieces, “that create a feminine silhouette.” If you usually wear oversized tops and slim leggings, it’s time to give them a break and choose something that will not look bulky in an embrace with your fiancé. Choose necklines or details (small ruffles) that draw the attention up to the face.
A photographer’s viewpoint
When choosing outfits for your engagement pictures, Fagg says to consider the tight focus shots, such as cozy relationship pictures and ring pictures, where frayed collars or missing buttons will be noticed. Textured fabrics, such as lace and accessories can add interest to threequarter body shots. Full-body shots look best when using clothes with movement and motion.
Final tip
Your main accessory is your ring. Make sure it is polished and that your nails look good. ■ As a personal wardrobe consultant and owner of Alpharettabased Fashion With Flair, Lori Wynne helps people look their best. Connect with her at fashionwithflair.com.

HER GARDEN
Yes, you can — grow your own wedding flowers By ABRA LEE
Contributing Writer
R
emember Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s extravagant flower display at their wedding? It must be fabulous to have a royal head gardener at your beck and call. A girl can dream, right? But I wake up and realize I don’t have royal money. For my second marriage, I may be better served to do the arrangements myself. After reading “Grow Your Own Wedding Flowers” by Georgie Newbery, I say, challenge accepted! If you also want to take on this challenge — even for a spring wedding — this is the blueprint to achieve your goal. You are only aiming for five to seven types of flowers. As long as you have space for three 3-foot-by-12-foot beds, you can grow enough for a guest list around 100. If you plan to get married in summer, fall or winter, plant and prepare now. Newbery details when to cut and condition flowers, and suggests dates to start your arrangement prior to the big event. The book also lists tools you will need, such as wiring, florist’s scissors, raffia, ribbon and floral tape, as well as supplies like vases, jugs, jars and bulbs that are not to be overlooked. You can also think beyond flowers to herbs, shrubs, branches or the gnarly little fruit of the sweet gum tree. This book has resources on where to purchase seeds and wholesale flowers and a list of plant choices from amaryllis to zinnia. Perhaps your floristry interests lie only in growing the flower crown, bouquet and petal confetti. Let a pro handle the garland, centerpieces, buttonholes and posies. Manage your expectations; this should be a fun project. Finally, take a look at what is already around. You’d be surprised how much is growing around your property that could be used in arrangements. Or, just bake a pie for the neighbor that always wins Yard of the Month. Then sweet-talk them into letting you harvest clippings for the big day. Weddings are a group effort, you know. ■

SHE's SEXY
Have a hot time on your honeymoon By ELAINE WILCO, MA, LPC Contributing Writer
T
he wedding night and the honeymoon conjure so many expectations for special sexy moments. In fact, for most couples, the reality doesn’t come close to the hype; and for some, damaging disappointment can haunt a relationship for years. For a better shot at happiness, it’s time to replace the myth with reality. The myth: The wedding night is a special time for the two of you to make love for the first time as a married couple. The reality: Wedding preparations are exhausting and stressful. Unless you are eloping, you (or your parents) have probably spent a lot of time, effort and money to throw a great party for friends and family, and you are going to want to enjoy every minute of it. Gone are the days when the newly married couple would leave the reception early to have their first sexual encounter in their honeymoon hotel. These days, most couples have been involved with each other (if not living together) for a while before the wedding. After a long evening of dancing, possibly drinking and socializing, most couples are not in the best shape for a meaningful intimate moment. For couples who have decided to wait until they are married, there is likely to be even more pressure to make this a night to remember — and even more likely that it 12 | northsidewoman.com | february2019
will be a night that disappoints. A better idea is to wait until morning , or until you get to your honeymoon destination — which brings me to myth No. 2. The myth: The honeymoon should be unending nights and days of lovemaking. The reality: Chances are, you already know what your sexual appetites are, and you are not suddenly going to be transformed by a marriage ceremony. Also, did I mention that wedding preparations are exhausting and stressful? Many couples arrive at their destination in a state of near-collapse. Add to that the opportunity to indulge in the pleasures of an exotic vacation, and there may not be much energy for indulging in more intimate pleasures. Bottom line is, the wedding night and the honeymoon are just the start of your life as a married couple. You have many days and nights to enjoy each other. So if you really want a hot honeymoon, choose Hawaii, or Miami or the Caribbean — the temperature is always sizzling there! ■ Elaine Wilco is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 20 years of experience. Mountain lodge offers unique spin on traditional post-wedding getaway
OUTDOOR WOMAN
By STEVE HUDSON Contributing Writer
O
kay, I admit it. From time to time, I’m an incurable romantic. Yes, this may not be in keeping with my rugged image as master of the out-of-doors. But that’s the way it is, and it works. So I dream… There we are, she and I, sitting in the wilderness somewhere, perched on a rock on a windswept ridge at twilight, snuggled up together with the breeze blowing through her hair, a cinematic sunset playing out in front of us on a screen as big as the sky. Hot cocoa brings an added touch of warmth. The faint echo of bells drifts up from the valley far below. We turn our faces and eyes lock, and the whole universe shrinks to just the two of us. What could be more romantic than that? “The Hilton,” said my wife. Well. Truth be told, Wife of Mine never led me to believe that she’s particularly fond of the great outdoors. In the months before our wedding, we did talk briefly (very briefly) about the possibility of a camping honeymoon, and a few months after the wedding, we even made a brief foray into the world of tents and camp stoves and freeze-dried meals by booking a campsite on Cumberland Island. But the day we arrived, it was gray and rainy. Sand was everywhere, bugs of a thousand descriptions were all on the move, and the tent developed a mind of its own (a devious mind at that) and — well, it kind of went downhill from there. That was pretty much the end of our joint exploration of the outdoor life. Nowadays, we compromise. I go into the wood with fly rod or hiking boots, and she lets me tell her all about it when I get home. Compromise is a wonderful thing. It works just fine, and love is alive as ever. You, however, may be different. Maybe your notion of romantic bliss does indeed include a trailhead. If that’s the case, then I’ve got an idea for you. Specifically, how about a hike-in honeymoon? It’s an intriguing thought (if you’re of an outdoorsy and somewhat

adventurous frame of mind), and that brings us to the Len Foote Hike Inn. Len Foote Hike Inn is just what its name suggests — an inn (in a manner of speaking) to which you hike. Yes, on foot, via a five-mile trail through the woods. The inn, owned by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and located deep in the Chattahoochee National Forest, opened in 1998 to provide an alternative overnight experience for hikers who wanted something more than a tent to sleep in for the night. It is operated by Len Foote Hike Inn Inc., a nonprofit organization and an affiliate of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club. The trail to the inn (which is named for Len Foote, a conservationist who worked in Georgia until his death in 1989) begins at the top of Amicalola Falls in Amicalola Falls State Park. From there, it’s about a two-and-a-half to three-hour hike to your destination, which sits at an altitude of about 3,100 feet. “We consider it a moderate hike,” said Eric Graves, executive director of Len Foote Hike Inn, “with only about 500 feet of elevation gain.” He adds, “I tell people it’s the easiest five-mile hike in the north Georgia mountains.”
The prospect of hiking five miles to reach your evening lodging tends to selfselect the Hike Inn’s clientele. But despite the prerequisite foot travel, or perhaps because of it, the inn has proven quite popular with those who like their experiences a little out of the ordinary and a lot off the beaten track. According to its website (hike-inn.com), Hike Inn provides “many of the comforts of home in a rustic and beautiful setting.” And that’s true. It’s a cluster of four wood buildings designed so that they fit their mountain setting. Prominent among them is the bunkhouse, which houses 20 guest rooms and a central lobby. A second building, connected to the first by a covered breezeway, houses the dining room and kitchen. Each day, guests enjoy two hot home-cooked meals (breakfast and dinner) served family style; additionally, if you’re a guest, trail lunches can be ordered for a small additional charge. The inn can accommodate vegetarian, vegan and food allergies with advanced notice. A third building houses the inn’s bathhouse, which has separate facilities for men and women. Hot showers are every outdoor adventurer’s dream come true, and

Each room sleeps two adults, and a camping mat can be provided for one child 12 or younger to sleep on the floor. Rooms have no outlets for cellphones, personal computers or alarm clocks. you’ll find them here — along with a fresh towel, sinks, mirrors and even blow dryers. At the eastern end of the complex is the aptly named Sunrise Room. It’s the perfect place to read a book or play a game — or simply to sit on the porch in a rocker or Adirondack chair and watch the sun come up over the mountains. You’ve got to get up early to catch the sunrise, but it’s worth it. Hike Inn provides essentials such as linens, blankets, pillows and towels, plus soap and shampoo in the bathhouse. But you must understand that this is not a traditional hotel, and you must remember that romance and luxury are not the reasons that it’s there. Rather, Hike Inn emphasizes conservation, environmental stewardship and education in every aspect of its operation. You’ll see solar power heating water and solar panels providing energy. Odorless composting toilets take care of the rest. Guests are even encouraged not to waste food, and a vermiculture composting system (earthworms) takes care of the leftovers. You’ll also want to note that in keeping with the overall theme of the place, it’s pretty much an electronics-free zone. There are

► OUTDOOR WOMAN Continued from Page 15 no power outlets in the rooms — that means no TV, no cable and no microwave ovens. None of ‘em. Guests are even encouraged to eschew laptops and cellphones. To recharge your camera battery, there’s a solarpowered charging station. But that’s about it. There’s one other thing you need to know, too, and it’s really important in our present context. So take note: Bedrooms (note that the inn calls them “bunk rooms”) have single bunk beds with single (albeit extra-long) mattresses. “And while the rooms are private,” adds the website, “the walls are thin.” Just saying. Despite the prerequisite five miles of foot travel needed to get there, and despite the fact that the word “romantic” was probably not used even once in the project’s preliminary planning, the Hike Inn nonetheless has a sort of rustic romantic appeal and has hosted a number of weddings over the years. “We’ve also been the site of numerous proposals,” Graves said. “Dozens, really.” And yes, though it’s not likely to displace Bali or Paris on the list of most-popular destinations, honeymooners really have chosen Hike Inn too. Each year, several couples make Hike Inn their honeymoon destination — and if you time things right, it can really be a pretty neat honeymoon destination. “One particular honeymoon couple comes to mind,” Graves said, adding that this couple timed their arrival for early in the week (when the inn is usually less busy). “We didn’t have a full house,” he said, “and were able to arrange our guests so that the couple had some privacy.” What’s the best time to consider? Graves said fall is by far the busiest season at Hike Inn. At that time of year, privacy might be hard to come by. But he added that at other times — notably summer and winter — the folks at Hike Inn will be glad to work with honeymoon couples if the number of guests allows. 16 | northsidewoman.com | february2019
Certainly, a hike-in honeymoon isn’t for everyone. But what defines a honeymoon anyway? If you think about it, the possibilities are endless. In fact, with just a bit of forethought, the hike itself can become part of the romance too. Start by taking your usual hiking-trip planning and tweaking it a little here and there. You might replace that Nalgene bottle of tepid water with a thermos of hot cocoa (marshmallows on the side). Dump the trail mix and beef jerky, too, and pack chocolate truffles or fine cheese and crackers instead. Or one of you could go a day early and hide a few love notes along the way — then (surprise!) “discover” them together on the hike in. For that matter, why not stash a guitar off the trail ahead of time, then retrieve it and offer a musical expression of your undying love? I hear that’s actually been done. So what if you can’t carry a tune in a bucket? Like the poets say, the music of love will suffice. Just don’t forget a blanket to sit on while you sing — a small one, of course, so you can snuggle. Yes, you gotta love romance. So consider… There you are at Len Foote Hike Inn, sitting side-by-side on the Sunrise Room’s porch. You’ve spent the day hiking together, perhaps exploring the trail leading to Springer Mountain and the start of the Appalachian Trail. But now you’re back at the inn, relaxing together in a couple of rocking chairs in the warm waning light of evening. Hands stretch out, fingertips touch… If that’s you and yours, and if hiking is your thing, and if decadent luxury isn’t essential (and if you’re really and truly up for starting things in a way that’s a little out of the ordinary), then who knows? Maybe a Hike Inn honeymoon really might be for you! ■ Learn about the hiking trails of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Steve Hudson’s book Hiking the Hooch. s a bride-to-be with my April wedding fast approaching, I am all too familiar with the stress of planning a wedding this year. The costs of weddings are increasing at an exponential rate, and it can be difficult to find ways to make your dream wedding a budgetfriendly one. Here are a few tips and ideas I’ve uncovered in my own wedding research as a financial advisor: Venue: Admittedly, I have a lack of creativity and patience. For me, it made sense to go for an all-inclusive venue to cut down on stress. However, if you are a much better bride than I, look for a venue that will let you express your creative side, make your own decorations and allow you to shop around prices for catering and DJ services. Economical floral options: Fresh flowers are a preference for many brides on their wedding day; however, you can save by using silk flowers or even making your own bridesmaid bouquets with fresh flowers you buy yourself, rather than going through a florist. Choosing flowers that are in season will also keep your costs down if you are

set on a fresh flower look. Food and beverage: Do you have a family member or friend that can cater your wedding? Steak dinners aren’t always necessary. Three cute ideas I’ve seen in my wedding search have included barbecue, pizza and food trucks for guests. For the bar, sticking with beer and wine instead of a full bar will save you money up front and might save your friends from having a little too much fun and not remembering their night. Paper: Invitations are important, but using sites like Minted, Snapfish and Etsy can lower your overall paper costs by including invitations, thank you cards and table numbers all in one location. Keep your expectations realistic: In this day and age, it can be very hard to plan a party for 200-plus people while staying within a four-figure budget. In the beginning of your planning, be realistic as to what kind of wedding you want in relation to how much money you are able to spend. Above all, make a budget and stick to it. My fiancé and I set a budget first when we started our wedding planning, and have worked to stay within our pre-determined numbers for each category. Congratulations to all my fellow soon-to-be newlyweds! ■

Wedding checklist: fact versus fiction Writer juggles novel’s debut while planning daughter’s May nuptials
BOOK YOUR OFFICIANT
By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer
F
or Roswell author Marilyn Baron, in the throes of debuting her 24th work of fiction while planning her daughter Marissa’s May wedding, art often imitates life. Not only is Marissa the author’s second daughter to marry, nearly half of Baron’s books feature weddings, including the most recent, “The Saffron Conspiracy.” That means any resemblance to actual persons or events is not always purely coincidental in her novels. It also means the writer is a pro at wedding checklists, whether fictional or factual.
START A WEDDING FOLDER
For the 2015 wedding of her daughter Amanda to Adam Kallin, Baron discovered just how many details go into planning — most of which she assumed she would decide, as her own mother had done for her. “At my wedding, I was in college and 18 | northsidewoman.com | february2019

my mother planned the entire event without much input from me. All the groom had to do was show up in a tux. Today, kids are getting married later, so they want to be more involved — particularly contemporary grooms,” Baron said. Fiction: “I hope Andreas doesn’t have opinions about the wedding … What groom cares about his wedding?” — “The Saffron Conspiracy: A Novel” Nonfiction: “My son-in-law Adam kept a tally of who was ahead in the wedding planning battle,” Baron joked. “In the end, it was Marilyn 17, Adam 3.”
In addition to weddings, cultural clashes are another, often humorous, theme found in Baron’s books. From a “Holocaust-obsessed” rabbi's daughter marrying a German to a romance between the living and undead, Baron’s craft prepared her for May’s real-world conflict. Fiction: ‘‘And while we’re on the subject of mothers. Your mother is the original Momzilla-in-law. I’ve gone along with almost everything she’s wanted. We’re having two officiants, a rabbi and a reverend. I drew the line when she wanted to release white doves after the ceremony, inside our house.” — “The Vampire Next Door” Nonfiction: When Baron’s daughter Marissa marries George Tuan-Mu in May, the ceremony will be officiated by a rabbi and will also include Mandarin readings. “My daughter is Jewish and her fiancé is Asian, so I must be conscious of that fact in every decision made surrounding this Jewish-Asian fusion event,” Baron said. “Like including the ‘double happiness or joy’ character on the invitations and printing the reverse side of the invitation in Chinese. And being aware of lucky colors (red and gold) and unlucky colors (white) and flowers that are acceptable (orchids and lilies) and taboo (white flowers and any flowers with thorns). “I may be Momzilla, but my future sonin-law is shaping up to be quite a contender,”
Baron said, laughing. “In my January newsletter, I told readers I need to buy a sash that says, ‘I have lost complete control of this wedding.’”
PURCHASE A DRESS
While Baron’s genres vary from suspense and paranormal/fantasy to historical romantic thrillers, the wedding attire is invariably fabulous — in her writing, as well as in reality. Fiction: “How could he describe the gown? How could he describe his bride? She was a fantasy in what seemed to him to be layers and layers of multiple laces and tulle in a feminine banded-waist ball gown.” — “The Widows’ Gallery” Nonfiction: Beautiful dresses have also been selected for Marissa and George’s nuptials, but the future groom has different wardrobe expectations for the rehearsal dinner. “A Dragon Con fan, George wants all the guests, including me, to come in costume (cosplay from all universes and genres), for a ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Salt Line ceremony to join the two families,” Baron said, chuckling. “He wants me to show up as Princess Leia in ‘Star Wars.’ Princess Leia? I’m more likely to come as the late Carrie Fisher.”

nuptials, as Baron is discovering – not without obstacles – for May’s ceremony. Fiction: “I’ve been thinking … I want to take you back to Crete. Let’s hold the wedding at the Etz Hayyim synagogue. And for our honeymoon, we’ll go to all the places we missed the first time — Rome, Capri, Venice and of course the rest of the Greek islands.” — “The Siege: A Novel” Nonfiction: “I booked The Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta for the wedding and Sunday brunch, which would normally be OK,” Baron said. “But, according to George, four is an unlucky number in Chinese culture and to be avoided because it represents death. To top that off, the wedding will be held on the fourth floor. Nothing can be done about that now, but apparently you can block the negative energy and spirits of the ‘worst number’ by putting a gold circle around it. So, we will be employing a simple, clear removable sticker with a gold circle around the fourth-floor elevator buttons.”
GOOD BOOKS
As when she had an undead being gallop into a wedding on horseback to claim his beloved in a recent book, Baron has learned to go with the flow. Fiction: “You came! You rode in on a white horse to rescue me.” — “The Vampire Next Door” Nonfiction: “When it came time to say the Blessing of the Challah before the meal was served at Amanda’s wedding,” Baron said, “the challah was wheeled out, and Adam’s uncle had the honor of saying the blessing, cutting it and taking the first bite before pieces were distributed to guests. But when he opened the cloth cover, he discovered there was no challah. Someone had substituted a dinner roll. “It was hardly ideal, but sometimes what you don’t know won’t hurt you,” said Baron, who will be reading from her latest novel, “The Saffron Conspiracy,” at A Novel Idea Feb. 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Dunwoody’s Créma Espresso Gourmet. ■

2019 trends focus on a natural look with element of drama By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
T
he big takeaway from the Bridal Expo in New York last summer is that Meghan Markle may have singlehandedly saved the “natural face” from the clutches of the smoldering, heavily contoured look favored by reality stars and runway models. “Matte makeup has been replaced with glowing, luminous skin and shimmery shadows,” said Cynthia Morrison Eike, an Atlanta-based makeup artist ( visagedesigns@ gmail.com). “Bridal makeup will be softer, more natural, and monochromatic, using similar shades of eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick.” But “statement” highlights are also trending, with brides often focusing on one attribute, whether it’s their eyes, lips or cheekbones. Here are a few of the trends seen last summer at the year’s biggest bridal bash — and likely to be “the look” of the 2019 bride.
Natural looks, radiant skin
It’s the bride’s big day with every eye on her. This may not be the day to roll out the “new you,” and makeup artists agree that bridal beauty is going back to classics. 20 | northsidewoman.com | february2019
“Natural makeup is definitely a trend to follow for 2019, with just beautiful, luminous skin, defined eyebrows and maybe a soft wash of color on the eyes,” said Amy Parfett, co-founder of WedShed, an online blog for all things wedding (www.wedshed.com.au). Lash extensions will continue to be universally popular, because they enhance the eyes naturally without adding more makeup. To get your skin in its best pre-wedding condition, schedule a facial no sooner than four days before your wedding (even longer if you are doing a chemical peel). “You want to make sure you have no reactions to the procedure, and that your skin is bright, beautiful and hydrated on your wedding day,” said Alisa Lakisic, owner of Mezz Spa in Alpharetta.
Flushed cheeks and freckles
If you’ve spent any amount of time in the Atlanta sun, chances are you’ll be sporting a few freckles. And because makeup is all about enhancing what you already have, it’s no surprise brides are starting to embrace their sun-kissed skin. Don’t have any? Ask your makeup artist to draw a few faux freckles. Add a flush of color to your cheeks and you’re wedding-aisle ready. “After seeing Meghan Markle embrace her freckles, more brides are embracing theirs
too. I often do natural drawn-on freckles for shoots. Now brides are wanting this look, especially if they naturally have freckles and just want to add more,” said Aleisha Johnson, a makeup artist who contributes to WedShed. Another trend she sees is brides preferring "natural pink, fresh rosy cheeks" with just a touch of shimmering illuminator to naturally enhance their features. Flush is fine – but not the burn, said Morrison Eike. Be aware of too much sun right before the wedding, since tan lines and redness may interfere with your makeup (and dress).
HER BEAUTY
ce’ of your wedding Bold lips
Statement lips have always been popular since the strong splash of color requires few other makeup enhancements to stand out. Today’s brides are now pairing the look of bold, bright lips with a minimal, natural face for their wedding look. If you think it might be too much for the ceremony itself, ask your makeup artist to use a more muted tone for the ceremony, then go bold for the reception with the statement lips. Make sure you test drive the color before the wedding and find one that fits your personality, your colors and the rest of your look. Remember, your wedding may last only one day, but the pictures (and Instagram) last forever.
metallic eye is also trending for this year’s bride (think smoky eye on overdrive). Ask your makeup artist to incorporate and blend various shimmers — silver, gold, rose gold, bronze — for a dramatic look. Pair a shimmery lid with black liquid eyeliner and a touch of mascara to complete the look. Remember, less is more, so it’s best to highlight one feature — eyes or lips — to avoid a clash of themes. As far as eyebrows, ever look back on photos and wonder why in the world you plucked your brows till they cried out for help? Fortunately, pencil-thin, severe eyebrows are a distant memory, and full, brushed brows are the new trend. Brows frame your face and illuminate your eyes, so taming them is important. Keep them in check with a bit of tinted brow gel to give them volume and definition.
certainly be a showstopper. Take advice from your manicurist and keep gloves on until the ceremony to avoid damaging the artwork, which can cost upward of $100 or more.
The big reveal
Morrison Eike recommends finding a makeup artist at least three months in advance of the wedding to do a trial run. Whether you choose to do your own makeup or hire a professional, a practice run will provide the bride with a starting point. The biggest mistake brides make, she says, is using the same products for their wedding they use every day. “Makeup women wear every day is usually not photo friendly and not applied heavily enough to yield the best pictures,” said Morrison Eike, who has been a makeup artist for 30 years. Finally, she advised the bride to create an “emergency kit” with Kleenex, hairspray, breath mints, pain relievers, feminine protection needs, hairpins, bridal lip color and translucent powder to keep close at hand. ■

Of all the little details to be managed for the wedding, don’t forget the bride’s hands will be on display all night — from flashing the diamonds to cutting the cake. A basic French manicure on gel or acrylic nails remains the most popular option for its simplicity and ease. Morrison Eike suggests adding a stripe of metallic polish to nude nails to add an eye-catching upgrade. Using rhinestones and other embellishments are becoming more popular for wedding manicures. This is not a DIY project in most cases, as it takes a steady hand and practice; but blinged-out nails will february2019 | northsidewoman.com | 21

Entrepreneur ring-cleaning problem sparks business idea By KATHLEEN STURGEON

hen Monique Honaman married in 2009, she became devoted to keeping her new ring clean. “I love my ring and what it stands for, and I want to keep it sparkling,” she said. “Those clunky jars filled with cleaning fluid are messy. That little brush is just a pain to use, and you can’t really travel anywhere with it, because it’s just too big and it’s not TSA friendly.” She set off to research a solution to her problem, but found one didn’t exist…yet. So, she took on the task of solving the problem herself and came up with the idea for Ringo, a 2-inch tall ring cleaner with an aesthetically pleasing look. Under the lid, there are clips for the ring and small brushes to clean it using a pre-loaded, non-toxic cleaning solution. While she had the idea for Ringo, it took a few years to get the ball rolling, as Honaman’s days filled with work, raising two kids and volunteering at church and in her community. “Through those years, however, I never stopped thinking about Ringo,” she said. “It wasn’t until a trip out to California in 2014 that I decided to quit talking and actually see if I could make this idea work. My husband and I returned from this trip fired-up and committed to giving it a fair shake to see if we could make this product work.” The couple established their company, Contender Brands, and began creating designs and building prototypes. This wasn’t too difficult for Honaman, who formed an independent firm in 1999 that eventually merged and morphed into ISHR Group, a leadership development and executive coaching firm in 2006, after she left her corporate day job working for GE. But even with that experience, the two businesses had one major difference — ISHR Group is entirely a service business. “We bill on the services our people provide,” Honaman said. “It’s really a very simple model. Contender Brands is an entirely different beast, involving prototypes, patents, tooling, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution. A rolling stone gathers no moss, and I’m one of those people who is determined keep learning and growing. It’s fun to be continually challenged as we figure out every step of this process.” That process often stalled, and the couple had to learn patience when developing Ringo. They also struggled to find the right partners who would understand what they were trying to create. After coming 22 | northsidewoman.com | february2019

up with the idea, Honaman needed attorneys, designers, producers, marketers and more to help bring it from concept to creation. Once everything was put into place, however, Honaman could fully enjoy the product of her own creativity. “It’s wonderful to see others respond favorably to a product that didn’t exist before,” she said. “It’s really hard work and can challenge every ounce of our patience. It’s a large financial investment to design a product, and the vast majority of that investment has to be made before one cent is returned via sales. I believe this is why most people with great ideas give up before their product can even be designed; but sticking with it, and seeing an idea translate from paper to product is incredibly rewarding.” Now, a portion of all proceeds from Ringo are donated to Rainbow Village in Duluth, which has a mission of breaking the cycle of poverty, homelessness and domestic violence. Interior design tips for first-time homebuyers
Making interior spaces functional, safe, and beautiful
By TRACY HARKNESS Contributing Writer
B
PAGES 23 - 27
uying your first home is one of the most exciting and overwhelming experiences you will have. Although it can be stressful and expensive, let this be your go-to guide for decorating your new space!
Paint
Nothing can transform any home’s exterior or interior like paint. A fresh coat of paint is not only cost-effective, but can personalize any room in a short time. Whether you have a purchased a resale or a new home, the power of paint is nothing short of amazing.
Lighting, plumbing and hardware
Often, the lighting already installed in your home is too small or not your style. Swapping out a chandelier or bathroom vanity lights is an easy, cost-effective way to give you a fresh look while making a statement. Updating faucets and cabinet hardware throughout will give your home a more custom look without breaking the bank.
Furnishings
Investing in a few quality pieces that will stand the test of time is important, especially when it comes to upholstery. Splurge on the sofa and the fabric. Measure your space (or even tape it off), so you know the size and scale of furniture you need. Although you may love the idea of a sectional, don’t try squeezing it into a living room that is really designed for a sofa and two club chairs. Spend less on occasional tables and accessories to allow more wiggle room in your budget for upholstery.
Patience
Even though the excitement may overrule your patience, I recommend moving in, living in the space for a few weeks and then determining your best plan of action. Don’t rush to buy all of your furniture at once. Be selective. Mix styles and textures. Most importantly, make it your own! ■

Walls are a simple yet high impact way to transform any room By ZAINA WUEST Exquisite Living

ith shimmering metallic and elegant wallpapers, shiplap-style cladding and even simple paint effects, walls can create a dramatic focal point in a space. If you’re considering an update, remember that color is a powerful design tool. It can make a room feel peaceful, happy, comfortable or dramatic. The paint colors you choose, as well as the color of the furniture and accessories, all create a mood. A neutral paint scheme may go with everything, but a lot of beige and gray can really get you down. We love creating lively living spaces with vibrant pops of color. But choosing the right shade can be an overwhelming task. Even paint cards can be misleading – you’ll quite often find that a color looks more or less pigmented when applied to a large surface area, and the exact shade will be affected by the light fall, size and even the contents of the room. The good news is, if it doesn't work, you can simply start again. If you’re considering a makeover for you home’s walls, here are five tips to get you on the right track. • Consider the amount of natural light you get in the space. Sure, a dark shade will make for a dramatic feature wall, but without natural light, it’ll just end up looking grim and depressing. • Be wary of eye-popping brights. That eye-popping hue may have caught your attention in the glossy magazine, but consider the size of the space you’re working with. If it’s not big enough to carry it, bright shades can overwhelm and create

visual clashes. Remember, you can always introduce vibrant hues through cushions, throws and artwork. Avoid going too matchy-matchy. Furniture, floor coverings, paintings and rugs can serve as solid inspiration for which color to choose, but avoid matching everything exactly. Choosing a shade much lighter or darker than the pre-existing elements of a room works much more effectively. Don’t rely on sample swatches. Always test the color directly on the wall to get a true sense of how it will really look. Leave it on the wall for a day or two, and observe how the light plays with it, creating shadows at different times. For example, black paint has a reputation for looking dramatically different in certain lights – from green to blue to gray. Colors tend to come out darker on walls than they appear on paint chips, so if in doubt, err on the lighter side. Don’t get caught up in trends. Shudder at the thought of that splotchy sponge-painted wall trend popular in the 1990s? Don’t get caught up in the fads. Be daring, but follow your instincts and not the trends. ■ Exquisite Living |6225 Atlanta Highway | Alpharetta, GA 30004

SHE's FIT
Love yourself through your workouts By KAREN ESCOBAR Contributing Writer
T
here’s more to exercise than meets the eye. Sure, an active lifestyle keeps your heart healthy and joints functioning, but did you know that it also gives your brain a boost?
How can something that exhausts the body be good for our mental health? Wouldn’t it increase stress?
Clinical psychologist Jenny C. Yip says exercise helps release endorphins, which are the body’s “feel-good” hormones. These hormones are responsible for keeping the mind calm and the body relaxed. In addition, exercise also increases the blood’s circulation in the brain, which, in turn, improves your mood and attention. Spending as little as 20 minutes a day on some moderate exercises can make all the difference in your life, as it will help increase overall productivity and decrease the energy wasted from mental stress. Imagine!
Mental health benefits of working out
If you are looking for some extra motivation to get into the gym, then consider the amazing benefits that exercise has on your overall mental health.
Reduce stress
Rough day at work? A lot going on at home? Then maybe it’s time to get into the gym. Exercise can help alleviate stress, because it increases norepinephrine, a chemical produced by the body to help moderate the brain’s response to stress.
Boost brainpower
There’s more to a workout than buff muscles. Studies have shown
28 | northsidewoman.com | february2019
cardiovascular exercise can help create new brain cells (neurogenesis) and improve overall brain performance to help keep your A game! This boost in brain power also helps sharpen your memory, which gives you more brain space to learn something new! So why not try something new in 2019? Let’s live more and give ourselves the love we all deserve.
Increase creativity and productivity
Having artist’s block? Fear not. A quick workout can help get those creative juices brewing and supercharge that post-workout inspiration. Aside from that, because your energy is flowing, you get more stuff done and you’ll love every minute of it! Self-love is often a struggle for many. Most of us are our biggest and harshest critics. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, intimidated and discouraged, but remember — you are not alone and the baby step to selflove is putting yourself out there. It may not be at the gym right off the bat, but start taking long walks or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Each effort (no matter how small) makes a difference, and when you’re ready, set up a trial class with a trainer at your local gym. Finding a gym that promotes a sense of community can help you get in the routine of working out, lose any unwanted weight, strengthen your mental game and find a new level of self-confidence. So what are you waiting for? Let’s start 2019 with some love and a workout, because a workout a day keeps the anxieties away! ■

The Women in Rotary group meets quarterly to unite the women of North Fulton’s Rotary clubs and encourage other women to join.
Women in Rotary highlights club benefits to community By JULIA GROCHOWSKI
julia@appenmediagroup.com
L
ocal resident Karen Hipes was drawn to the Alpharetta Rotary Club as soon as she learned about the good it does for the community. Alpharetta Rotary, like all Rotary clubs, is part of an international group that brings together business professionals and leaders to provide humanitarian service, goodwill and peace around the world. Rotary clubs focus on six areas: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies. Eradicating polio worldwide has been a signature project for several years. “Some people probably come in with the idea of it being a networking group, but it’s not supposed to be a traditional business networking,” said Hipes, who began frequenting the Alpharetta Rotary meetings after her husband, John, became president of the club in 2008. “It’s more about giving back to the community. There is, of course, some networking because of the nature of the club, but it’s not the main focus.” In the North Fulton area, Rotary clubs tend to focus on those areas that most affect the local communities, Hipes said. North Fulton’s clubs work on maternal and child health, literacy and
basic education, and economic and community development. While there is a club for each city in North Fulton, as well as an overarching North Fulton Rotary Club, the organizations work together and collaborate on several events, service projects and fundraisers. This becomes especially apparent when the clubs support the same causes and nonprofits, like North Fulton Community Charities, Habitat for Humanity and The Drake House, Hipes said. One of the aspects that makes the North Fulton Rotary clubs stand out is the quarterly Women in Rotary event. It originally started as a social event for women in the North Fulton clubs to get together once or twice a year, but has grown since. “The event is where we can have a social and talk to women in the other clubs and see what they’re doing,” Hipes said. “It’s really for the camaraderie. But it also gives us an opportunity to invite other women to Rotary, so they can see who we are and what we’re about. “It’s really no more than let’s get together and celebrate women in Rotary and encourage other women to join,” she said. While Rotary once had a reputation as an older man’s club — women were not admitted as members under Rotary International’s constitution until 1989 — that’s simply not true anymore, Hipes said. “In our club, there’s not a distinction that
men do this and women do this,” she added. “You can do anything in our club. Gender doesn’t seem to play a part in our club at all and certainly not in prohibiting you from doing anything.” Almost half of the local clubs have women serving as presidents this term — Alpharetta, Johns Creek, North Fulton and Roswell. During the event, women can check out the different North Fulton Rotary clubs, the service projects they’ve worked on, and find the best fit based on home and work location, as well as meeting time. All of the local Rotary clubs meet at different times and on different days. The Alpharetta Rotary, for example, meets Friday mornings. “It’s very high energy, and we like it that way,” Hipes said. “It kicks off our weekend … It’s just a different feel from if you went to, for example, Roswell Rotary, which meets Thursdays at lunch and has hundreds of members.” People can join either through an application process or by being sponsored by an existing member. The next Women in Rotary event will be held Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Hotel at Avalon, 9000 Avalon Blvd., Alpharetta. Choosing a pet to add to your family
By DR. JOANNE ROESNER, DVM, DABVP Loving Hands Animal Clinic www.lovinghands.com
W
hen adding an animal member to your family, there are a myriad of choices and considerations to ponder. What species is the best choice? What resources are required, and what are the costs involved in caring appropriately for that animal? Are you willing to commit to the animal for the entirety of its life? Remember, rats live 2.5 years, while some birds have lifespans of 60 to 80 years. Does the pet fit in with the entire family? What is the age of the animal? Should you adopt from a shelter or rescue, or should you purchase an animal from a breeder? How was the animal treated before you acquired it? Was it in an institutional setting or in a home? The questions may seem endless, but they’re important to consider for everyone’s benefit. Many fabulous pets are available Dr. Joanne Roesner, through rescue and worthwhile organizations. DVM, DABVP with Considering we still euthanize millions of Charlie and Kurt. perfectly adoptable pets each year in shelters, adoption makes moral and ethical sense. If you do not want to go through the time commitment, work and destruction of training a puppy or kitten, the adult animals can have more predictable temperaments as well. And they are not adopted as quickly as the younger ones. The number of costly exotic birds, which end up in rescue because their longevity was not considered, is sizable. The Georgia House Rabbit Society finds new homes for wonderful bunnies and is a great source of trustworthy information on care. When adopting a pet, remember the answers to your initial questions. It is important to pick a pet that suits your lifestyle, abilities and expectation. The cuteness factor can sway all of us into impulsive choices. Find a pet with which you have chemistry and attraction. I strongly recommend spending significant time with the animal. Observe its behavior. How does it behave in different situations, like when it is removed from familiar settings or is exposed to other animals? Stress can influence animal behavior greatly. Expose the potential adoptee to all family members, especially children. I personally advise, if possible, bringing an animal home for a trial run. In this case, understand there may be a period of formal introduction and acclimation, which can influence behavior, especially with other animal family members. Purchasing a pet requires all of the considerations of adoption. Research the breed, but do not believe everything on the Internet. I very

much recommend talking to your veterinarian and to people other than the breeder, who have experience with the breed. Make sure the breeder is screening for important diseases in a given breed and that parents have been certified free of defects. A delightful couple I know spent many hundreds of dollars more for a Golden Retriever puppy than I did. My breeder automatically gave me multiple certifications (e.g. OFA, PennHip, CERF) on both parents. She would have furnished another generation back if I had asked. By eight weeks of age, my puppy had already had nail trims, baths, lots of human contact, was virtually house-trained and lived in an idyllic situation. Their puppy has no certification at all, was shipped from the Midwest and placed in a cage in a retail setting until 12 weeks of age. I searched for the “breeder” listed on their registration papers and could not locate a way to contact them. The circumstances of early life can influence social behavior and fear. This is especially true in cats, which need to be handled starting at three weeks of age. How kittens are interacted with when young is important. I recommend meeting the breeder at the facility where the puppy was or will be born. It is important to meet both parents or, at very least, the female. If someone suggests meeting you with a single kitten or puppy in a parking lot, be cautious. Watching interactions with litter mates, mom and the breeder may help you select the appropriate pet for you. All of this being said, many of us have been susceptible to “expensive rescue” where we see an animal in bad circumstances and we purchase them to prevent suffering. Loving Hands Animal Clinic can furnish past Pet Care University handouts on subjects like behavior, nutrition and other pet care topics. See Appen News or Loving Hands Animal Clinic’s Facebook and social media pages for more information on our next Pet Care University offering on pet dental health with Dr. Emily McManus on Saturday, Feb. 16. ■
Meet Burney
urney is a total lovebug of a puppy who is only three months old and the perfect combination of Golden Retriever and German Shepherd. According to his foster, Burney has gotten the best of both breeds – smart, friendly and easy going. Burney loves everyone and wants to be around people all the time. Burney needs a home that will understand that he is still a baby and needs to be taught what he needs to know. His foster is working on potty training, crate training, and walking on a leash, and Burney would love another dog to learn from and to play with. A fenced in yard would be ideal for a place for him to run off the puppy energy. If you want to give Burney his forever home, visit Angels Among Us Pet Rescue at www.angelsrescue.org/adopt/adoption-forms. Importance of prenatal care
DR. J. REYES
By NURIA NELKIN, CNM
P
regnancy is a beautiful part of the life cycle and most pregnancies progress healthily and safely during pregnancy and birth. Although this is a normal process, it is also a whole new world of feelings and physical changes. Prenatal care helps educate and guide women and their families through these changes. Some pregnancies will have higher risk issues or develop problems that will best be identified and managed by routine prenatal care. Prenatal screening tests can identify a host of issues and help determine if there needs to be interventions to help maintain the pregnancy and keep the pregnancy healthy for both mom and baby. At every visit we are always screening to make sure that woman have normal symptoms, labs, and vital signs. We evaluate and intervene when there are problems, and we refer to a higher level of care, when necessary, to ensure women get the best and most appropriate care possible. Even when everything is progressing with no concerns, prenatal care is the best place to learn about safe and healthy recommendations of lifestyle, diet, supplements, medications and ways to help with discomforts of pregnancy. We also are there to help you adjust to the huge transition of growing your family. Pregnancy is not only a great physical change, but also a huge mental and emotional change for a woman and her family, whether preparing for first time parenthood or adding to one’s family. Navigating this with a knowledgeable team helps this transition be easier. Getting to know your team over the course of several months helps you form a relationship of mutual trust with your providers. This helps us know you and your individual needs. Our goal is to work with you as a team to help you take care of yourself and your baby, having the healthiest pregnancy and birth possible. Modern OBGYN has three convenient office locations. Sunlight and health – everything in moderation? By DR. BRENT TAYLOR
Premier Dermatology and MOHS surgery of Atlanta
R
ecently, a friend of mine brought to my attention an article that made the case that regular sunlight exposure might help us live longer. This topic seems to be of broad general interest, so I thought it worth including in this month’s paper. For years, the dermatology community has been preaching sun avoidance. This is only natural DR. TAYLOR given that much of a dermatologist’s job is focused on the prevention, detection and treatment of skin cancer. The science linking ultraviolet radiation to skin cancer is solid. Melanoma has also been very strongly linked to sun burns and tanning bed use. The case is clear that sun exposure causes skin cancer. During my residency, my attendings had us read numerous articles on vitamin D. One of the strongest arguments put forth by the protanning bed community and pro-sun exposure community was that avoidance of the sun could lead to vitamin D deficiency, which leads to rickets in children, osteoporosis in adults, and a likely higher incidence of autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and possibly even a higher incidence of some non-skin cancers. To many dermatologists, this argument seemed weak because vitamin D supplements are readily available, and it seemed that oral vitamins could simply replace the vitamin D that the sun helps provide. We could have our cake and eat it, too. Avoid the sun and take vitamin D supplements, and you’ll avoid skin cancer and avoid vitamin D deficiency. But the plot thickens. Researchers found out that ultraviolet radiation stimulates nitric oxide production in the skin, which lowers blood pressure and may lead to a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. Because cardiovascular disease kills more people than skin cancer, the argument was made that sun avoidance might have a net effect of hurting rather than helping. Once again, the argument was made that we could simply take medication designed to lower blood pressure. So, now, we are avoiding the sun, taking vitamin D supplements and taking antihypertensive medication. 34 | northsidewoman.com | february2019
But uh oh, additional data suggests that sun light might change serotonin levels and improve mood and regulate circadian rhythms and assist with sleep. But that can be fixed with medication. So, now, we are avoiding the sun, taking vitamin D supplements, anti-hypertensives, fluoxetine, and melatonin. But…..additional concerns keep arising – autoimmune, cancer-related, and more. What is everyone to do? In my opinion, the answer seems to be that we need to embrace personalized medicine and customize our recommendations for the individual. There are unbelievable variations between levels of UV radiation in Ireland vs equatorial Africa, and we cannot expect sun light recommendations for Irish and African descendants to be identical. This is not to say that general rules can’t be created. For example, avoid blistering sun burns seems like fairly safe advice no matter who you are. However, a one size fits all approach to sun exposure is likely not wise. And it is responsible to admit that there exists a body of data and arguments that support both positive and negative effects of sun exposure. If a patient comes to me in his 70s riddled with skin cancers on his face and scalp, then wearing hats and sunscreen, at least on the face and scalp, seems sage advice. If a young patient develops a melanoma, then avoiding sun burns and erring on the side of less sun exposure rather than more seems prudent along with very regular self and professional skin exams. For someone with equatorial African genetics, avoidance of sun might be more harmful than helpful. We just don’t know optimum doses of sun exposure, but ancestry likely informs us regarding optimum levels of sun exposure. And who knows whether many of the positive health effects in those receiving a lot of sun came from active lifestyles and exercise. Many studies have not been able to convincingly control for exercise when quantifying health effects of sun exposure. We likely do not need to have guilt from small amounts of sun exposure. Instead, we can enjoy the great outdoors, exercise, and the occasional ray of sun light, and we need to be honest with ourselves about our genetic heritage, our risk factors, what is hurting us, and make adjustments to fit our individual situations. For professional dermatologic care that is personal and personalized, please consider Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta. It is our pleasure to serve you. ■

That may be just as well, since the annual survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CVS Pharmacy [1], found that two-thirds of those surveyed get a flu vaccine every year or plan to get one this year, a five percent increase from last year. One reason so many are flocking to get the shot is the knowledge of last year’s flu season—which according to the CDC had flu levels that were the highest observed since 2009. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed[2] say that knowledge of last year’s severe flu season makes them more likely to get a flu shot this year. On a similar note, among the 27 percent of parents of children under 18 whose child did not get the flu vaccine last year, 26 percent say they are more likely to get their child vaccinated this year after learning about the notably high flu levels during last year’s flu season. The percentage who get vaccinated at a pharmacy stayed at 22 percent, but the percentage of employed adults who get vaccinated at their workplace fell from 22 percent to 15 percent while those who got vaccinated by a health care professional rose from 44 percent to 48 percent. The survey also found that doctors’ opinions (39 percent), where insurance is accepted (38 percent), and convenience (33 percent) rank among the top three factors in determining where to go for the shot. The flu vaccine is a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, so it’s fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B.
Nurse’s Advice
“It, surprising to many, can actually, it can actually take up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to build immunity,” explained Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “Because of this, CVS Pharmacy recommends patients get their flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available to ensure patients are the most protected before flu season peaks. Furthermore, influenza strains tend to change each year, so it’s very important to get vaccinated annually to make sure you are protected.”

What Else You Can Do
Here are four suggestions: 1. Stay home if you’re sick. The survey found that two out of three respondents would still go to work if they had flulike symptoms. In fact, flulike symptoms haven’t stopped some people from going out in public in general: • 28 percent have gone to the supermarket • 12 percent have picked up a child from school or day care • 10 percent have taken public transportation. 2. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based cleansing gel. 3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. 4. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs. ■

February is children’s dental health month By DR. USHMA PATEL, D.M.D and DR. BRITTANY CORBETT, D.D.S Center For Advanced Dentistry
I
n February, for over seventy years, dentists, parents, and children all across America observe National Children’s Dental Health Month. This all began as a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio on February 3rd, 1941, and the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day was held on February 8th, 1949. It has since grown into a month-long celebration. Our message of the importance of oral health goes out DR. PATEL to millions of children and adults in communities across the country, and includes such events as health fairs, dental office tours, and visits to the classroom by dentists and hygienists. Dr. Ushma Patel has volunteered at local schools giving educational programs to several children’s classes on how to take care of their teeth and talking to them about nutrition to keep them healthy. One of the reasons for this special annual event is that many people are still unaware of the important DR. CORBETT role early dental care plays in our children’s overall health. We strongly recommend that parents take action early to ensure the health of their children’s teeth because attitudes and habits established at an early age are critical in maintaining good oral health throughout life. Children’s teeth are meant to last a lifetime, and a healthy smile is important to a child’s selfesteem. With proper care, a balanced diet and regular dental visits, their teeth can remain healthy and strong. Please make sure that we see your child within six months of the eruption of the first tooth as recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), and certainly no later than the child’s first birthday. Preventive care such as cleanings and fluoride treatments provide your child with “smile insurance” for a lifetime! Tooth decay is the most common childhood disease. five times more common than Asthma. Tooth decay is entirely preventable. Three out of every five children are affected by tooth decay. 51 million school hours are missed due to oral health problems. Every $1 spent on prevention in oral care can save you $8-$50 on restorative and emergency procedures. If you wish for any further information on any aspect of your child’s dental and oral health, please call us at 770-884-6623 or visit us on the web at www.HiTechSmiles.com. We’d be happy to help in any way we can! We do see many children of our adult patients. Is the smile you see in the mirror, the smile you wish you had? By DR. DAVID REMALEY, DDS
C
osmetic dentistry is one of the most costeffective ways to improve your appearance. A beautiful, bright, white and healthy smile can increase self confidence and overall life satisfaction. Many regular dental treatments can be cosmetic in nature and can enhance your existing smile. One of the easiest and quickest procedures is to professionally whiten your teeth. Other treatment including modern, BPA- free tooth-colored fillings are virtually invisible DR. REMALEY when compared to traditional silver fillings. Toothcolored crowns or caps can be placed instead of gold or silver. Roswell Dental Care offers some of the best treatments available to greatly improve your smile and the way you feel about yourself. Our office offers exceptional combination of state-of-the-art technology with an overall wellness approach to dental health and appearance. Once you have achieved that cosmetic update it is vital that you take precautions to keep it beautiful. 1. Follow good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss at least once daily to remove plaque. 2. Beware of many over the counter teeth bleaching products that are highly PH acidic. These products can cause tooth surface loss and sensitivity. 3. Limit your daily consumption of coffee, red wine and dark colored sodas and drinks such as cranberry juice tend to discolor and stain your teeth over time. After drinking these beverages, it is a good idea to clean and brush right after. 4. Blueberries, cherries and other highly pigmented foods tend to also discolor and stain your teeth over time. After eating these foods it is also a good idea to clean and brush right after. 5. Should you choose to drink carbonated drinks and dark colored sodas do so with a straw! This will allow food dyes to bypass teeth altogether. 6. Don’t smoke. Besides staining your teeth, smoking causes bad breath and increases the risk of gum disease and numerous types of cancer. 7. Many foods act as natural detergents to clean teeth. Chewing foods like apples, carrots, strawberries and celery help to naturally maintain a healthier cleaner and whiter smile. 8. Chew sugarless gum, this helps clean the surfaces of your teeth by stimulating saliva in your mouth. 9. Drink lots of water! Rinse your mouth thoroughly. Roswell Dental Care was recently designated for the 4th year as the ”BEST OF THE BEST” Dental Practice in North Atlanta by Appen Newspaper for 2018. It’s never too late to achieve a healthy weight
P
eople often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits. “Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?” NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.” Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year. The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the
energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day. By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond. To find more tips and resources for weight management and healthy living during the holidays and every day, visit the NIDDK website: https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weightmanagement. ■
