Spruill Gallery announces new exhibit
DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Spruill Gallery will present a new solo exhibition, “Returns,” from Atlanta artist Sarah Emerson, featuring some her recent work from April 25 to June 20.
The Spruill Gallery welcomes back Emerson, whose work is a notable part of the nonprofit’s contribution to public art. An opening reception is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. April 25 at 4681 Ashford Dunwoody Road.
Emerson is best known for her highly stylized paintings of nature,
use of different mediums and focus on contemporary landscapes. She also was one of the first artists to create a mural for what has evolved into the annual celebration of public art, AMPLIFY.
The Gallery, a branch of the Dunwoody nonprofit Spruill Center for the Arts, offers curated exhibitions and programs throughout the year to unite artists and patrons. The space allows artists the opportunity to introduce new, experimental and rarely seen works.
Emerson is a graduate of the Atlanta
College of Art, London’s Goldsmiths College and currently teaches at Agnes Scott College in Decatur. She exhibits her work in galleries across North America and Europe, including White Columns in New York and the High Museum in Atlanta.
An artist’s talk is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 at 2 p.m.

Dunwoody defers decision on drone program contract
By HAYDEN SUMLIN hayden@appenmedia.com
DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody City Council tabled a contract with Flock Safety for drone hardware and services April 14 after officials sounded alarms over funding.
Dunwoody Deputy Police Chief Oliver Fladrich presented the $100,000 six-month contract, which would fund the use of a “drone as first responder program” beginning in July and running through the end of the year.
Drones, or unmanned aerial systems, are increasingly used by law enforcement agencies for surveillance, crime scene investigation and as first responders.
“Your council chambers are
actually right underneath the location of the drone right now,” Fladrich said. “We have been very fortunate that Flock was kind enough to let us fly this drone ‘line of sight’ in this implementation phase, and we are asking for the funds to be released to help us pay for the drone.”
After the initial six-month period, the contract is set to renew Jan. 1, 2026, before shifting to an annual cost of $200,000.
At its annual City Council retreat last month, members heard from Police Chief Mike Carlson who presented a video from Flock Safety showing a peaceful arrest at Ashford Lane using the drone.

Officers detain suspect in shoplifting incident
DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody Police arrested a 22-year-old Clayton County man April 9 after he allegedly fled while shoplifting at the Target off Perimeter Center Place.
When officers arrived, they said loss prevention employees directed them to an appliance aisle, where the man was allegedly concealing merchandise.
An officer said he and his partner approached the suspect from both ends of the aisle. He said as soon as the suspect saw the officer approaching, the man immediately attempted to flee.
At that point, the officer said he tackled the suspect, detaining him after a brief struggle on the ground.
During a search of the suspect, officers said they found around 10 grams of marijuana.
While reviewing security footage of the incident with Target employees, officers said the man is seen removing a security device from a pair of PlayStation headphones and concealing a bottle of Goodfellow cologne.
The merchandise totals $161.
Officers transported the man to DeKalb County Jail and secured warrants for misdemeanor theft by shoplifting, obstruction of law enforcement and possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana
Jail records show the man was bonded out April 13.

Police arrest suspect in fraud investigation
DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody Police arrested a 32-year-old California man April 12 for financial transaction card
fraud and theft after receiving a report from an Arizona victim.
Police said a man reported his Chime credit card was used to make a $50 purchase at the Target off Perimeter Center Place April 10. Charges were also reported in Kennesaw and Roswell.
The Arizona man told officers that he has never traveled to Georgia and filed reports with Roswell and Phoenix authorities before calling Dunwoody Police.
The officer contacted Target loss prevention for security footage which showed a male suspect completing seven transactions at the self-checkout kiosk.
The officer said the man used his iPhone and Apple Pay for each charge, using a different card to pay each time. Police used the footage to track the suspect to his vehicle, a Nissan Rogue with Ohio plates. The same vehicle, a rental, was also recorded traveling in Alpharetta, Kennesaw, Milton and Roswell April 10-11.
Officers said they received a hit on the vehicle’s location from Flock Safety heading southbound on Clearview Avenue into Doraville.
The Dunwoody officer said he found the Nissan parked at the Clarion Hotel just before midnight April 11 and spotted a suitcase with the suspect’s name on it.
After Doraville officers arrived, the Dunwoody officer said they went into the hotel and met with the man at his room.
The 32-year-old California man, wearing the same clothes as seen in the Target security footage, told officers he was visiting friends and had been in Metro Atlanta for about a week.
During a search of the man, officers said they found two phones, some receipts and several gift cards. The suspect told them both phones and the gift cards belonged to him.
During a search of the vehicle, officers said they found 33 gift cards, 14 greeting cards, receipts from Targets across north Metro Atlanta, 24 cigarette packs and another iPhone.
He was arrested and taken to DeKalb County Jail.
Police secured two warrants for financial transaction card theft and fraud.

Dunkin Donuts manager reports overnight burglary
ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell Police are investigating an April 6 burglary at the Dunkin Donuts off Ga. 9 near the Alpharetta city limits after an unidentified man took more than $1,100 in cash.
Officers said they spoke with the manager before 5 a.m. April 7 and reviewed security footage of the burglary from just before midnight.
Security footage shows a man wearing a grey sweatshirt, blue jeans and a grey mask or bandana enter the building through a door with a keypad.
Officers said the man then went through the safe and cash registers taking just under $1,200 in cash. Security footage also shows the man also grab a $3 drink from a cooler.
The manager told officers that only she and her assistant manager know the new security code and it is unlikely any former employees would know the new door codes.
Officers said there have been two similar incidents at the coffee shop, one last November and another in February.
The case from November is inactive, but it involved the theft of more than $600 by a person wearing the same clothes as the April 6 suspect captured on security footage.
Officers said the February incident involved the assistant manager and a former employee. They said a former employee accessed the building with an old key, but did not take anything after the assistant manager ran him off.
While officers said that case is active with a warrant pending, there is no record of the former employee’s arrest. Employees told officers that the former employee was a suspect in both incidents.
Police did not identify a suspect in the April burglary because they said employees could not explain how the former employee would have known the code to the keypad.

Brook Run Park comes alive with Food Truck Thursdays
By HAYDEN SUMLIN hayden@appenmedia.com
DUNWOODY, Ga. — The 2025 kickoff of Brook Run Park’s Food Truck Thursdays drew about a thousand people April 17 for local cuisine and classic rock.
Through a partnership between the Dunwoody Homeowners Association, Redbird Events and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, Food Truck Thursdays attract about 1,000 patrons each occasion.
Vendors at the April 17 kickoff came from throughout Metro Atlanta and include Burger Bros ATL, Gyro Chef, Tres Jardines, My Vietnamese Food, Doug’s NC BBQ, EggRoll BoyZ and King of Pops.
Bill Grossman, founder and organizer of the popular food truck-concert series, said the first gathering was on the last day of school for DeKalb County students May 24, 2013.
A hit from the start, Food Truck Thursdays has grown into a Dunwoody community staple with concerts and a full lineup of Metro Atlanta catering trucks keeping patrons fed during their evening at the park.
Grossman said the weekly com-
munity gathering has picked up steam again after the COVID-19 pandemic. He pointed out a first-time vendor, always a good sign for local restaurateurs and entrepreneurs.
The Parks and Recreation Department sponsors live music on stage at the corner of Peeler and North Peachtree roads, while volunteers organize the vendors and their food trucks in the parking lot between the skate park and playground.
A few city officials attended the kickoff, including Mayor Lynn Deutsch, council members Tom Lambert and Joe Seconder and Parks and Recreation Director Rachel Waldron.
Seconder arrived with his shaded hat and lawn chair in tow, rushing to grab a spot near the stage before classic rock tribute band Corporate Therapy performed from 6-8 p.m.
Parents and their friends sat in lawn chairs enjoying food and drink while toddlers ran around the field.
After a hiatus April 24 for the 25th Lemonade Days Festival April 23-27, Food Truck Thursdays returns May 1.
To check scheduling, visit Dunwoody Food Truck Thursdays on Facebook.

Community contributions from the Eidson family

Zachariah Eidson was born in Georgia in 1823. He was the son of Boice and Catherine Willard Eidson. The Eidsons appear in the 1848 Georgia Tax Digest listing of Shallowford District, which includes what is now Dunwoody.
Zachariah Eidson donated land for the first Dunwoody School in 1880. The school is named Eidson Academy on the plat map. The land and school were where Dunwoody Library and the Spruill Center for the Arts are located today.
A deed recorded in 1906 provides the record for Zachariah’s donation to the community. James Spruill was executor of Zachariah Eidson’s estate. During his
lifetime, Eidson had arranged for “a certain parcel of land for a schoolhouse or plat of ground two acres to include right of way to nearest and best water or spring. To extend from public road to include said schoolhouse.” The trustees for this property, land lot 366 in the 18th Land District, were James Spruill, John King and W. J. Donaldson.
The deed also indicates the schoolhouse be known as Eidson Academy. The school built there was the first Dunwoody School. I have not found any other documents that reflect the name Eidson Academy, but Zachariah Eidson had the foresight to provide property for Dunwoody to build a school.
A plat map showing the site donated by Zachariah Eidson, also shows the adjoining property of W.H. and Edna Wilson, Charlie Blackmon, Bud Crews corner property
and the 1976 purchase of land behind the school by Jim Cowart.
Stephen Spruill, born in 1870, shared his memories as an early student in Dunwoody.
“My first school was a one-room log cabin on the site of the present Dunwoody Elementary School. My first teacher was Miss Mattie Graham, who lived with my grandparents. At that time, there were no public schools in Georgia and each family paid tuition for their own children.”
Dunwoody Elementary School remained at this location until it closed in 1985.
(“Story of Dunwoody,” Elizabeth L. Davis, Ethel W. Spruill, Joyce Amacher, Lynne Byrd”)
Boyce Eidson donated the land for the Eidson family cemetery, located on Winters Chapel Road across the street from Winters Chapel Methodist Church and next to
North Atlanta Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The earliest burial according to findagrave. com is for his wife, Catherine. She died in 1869, and he died a few years later. Today, there are 314 gravesites at Eidson Cemetery.
Calvin Eidson, grandson of Boyce, was a carpenter who helped build the Dunwoody Methodist Chapel on Mt. Vernon Road. He also led a committee who constructed a new parsonage for the church in one day.
Eidson Road, located between Tilly Mill Road and Peeler Road, is a reminder of the contributions of the Eidson family.

A simple set of rules one should live by

RAY APPEN
Publisher Emeritus ray@appenmedia.com
Dear Grandchildren, I wanted to make a few notes for you about being wise, caring and a good friend. You are already very good children and already you treat others – most of the time – with respect and caring. I have been reading books lately about how to be good. The book that I borrowed the rules listed below from is called “The Serviceberry,” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. It’s a little book
with lots of wisdom. I think one of its main messages is that we are all connected – people with other people, people with plants and animals, people with everything in the environment in which we all live.
You are so very important. What you do and say and how you treat others is a big deal.
So here are some of the lessons from that “Serviceberry” book.
No. 1: Know the ways of the ones who take care of you, so that you can take care of them. That means pay attention to how your parents treat you and other people and things. Learn from your parents.

No. 2: Introduce yourself. Recently I heard that Annie Moon (4) introduced herself at a party to an adult. “So, do you have any siblings?”
Adult: “Why yes I do.” Annie Moon: “Do they live close by?”

Sandy Springs celebrates new police, courts facility
By HAYDEN SUMLIN hayden@appenmedia.com
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The stateof-the-art Sandy Springs Police Headquarters and Municipal Court gives the city and its largest public safety department legitimacy on the North End.
A few hundred people, including high-ranking members of neighboring law enforcement agencies, Sandy Springs officials and department heads, gathered at 620 Morgan Falls Road April 12 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house to celebrate the city’s new $56 million public safety investment.
Police Sgt. Leon Millholland, public information officer for the department, said bringing the departments into one secure facility helps ensure safety for court employees, police personnel and visitors.
“The biggest change from our old headquarters to our new one is first and foremost the legitimacy, and also the transparency; It’s the citizens’ facility,” Millholland said. “Not being spread out over a business complex, allows us to work with our court services and other divisions within the department.”
The department is set to officially make the move from the Morgan Falls Office Park, just a block up Ga. 9 at

7840 Roswell Road, to new the state-ofthe-art facility April 21. The four-story, more than 130,000-square-foot police headquarters and municipal court includes the “bones” of the 35-year-old former office building with its internal courtyard, or open-air atrium.
Most of the facility is dedicated to the police department’s 110,000-squarefoot command center, not including the 8,500-square-foot sally port.
Spacious courtroom
The courtroom, designed to accommodate more than 100 people and outfitted with state-of-the-art technology, is just over 11,000 square feet. Municipal Court Judge Donald Schaefer told the crowd that the secure holding area makes a huge difference for the safety of staff members and the public.
“We have the ability to expand [into
another court room] because this city is booming,” Schaefer said. “We could even hold two court sessions at the same time.”
Before cutting the ribbon, Police Chief Kenneth DeSimone said officers have been touring the facility for the last few weeks to get accustomed to their new workspaces and locker rooms.
“This building here will replace four separate buildings that we’re operating in currently,” DeSimone said. “This will help us be much safer and do our job much more efficiently; the technology that’s in this building is absolutely amazing.”
The city and its partners on the project, Jericho Design and Reeves + Young, kicked off the project in August 2020 with the purchase of 7.42 acres for around $11 million.
Sandy Springs says after around $45 million in construction costs, the project is just over $56 million.
During the open house, the public had access to nearly the entire facility, including the new Sandy Springs Intelligence Operations Center, Judgmental Shooting simulator and some holding cells.

Thank you for voting for Conway Law!
Brought to you by – Conway Law
Wow! I am so humbled and thankful to be voted the Best Personal Injury Attorney in the Perimeter area! I love being part of this great community whether it’s going to Lemonade Days in the spring, cheering on our favorite teams at Dunwoody High School and Rush Union soccer, supporting the amazing dancers at Dan & Company, or working out with F3. If you or a loved one are injured due to someone else’s negligence or recklessness, give us a call.
Car wrecks are an unfortunate part of living in the Atlanta area. I wanted to share something practical to remember if you or a loved one are ever in a car wreck: Conway Law’s Four (4) “C’s” for car wrecks:
(1) CALL the police. People lie and an insurance company will not believe you unless there is a police report documenting the wreck;
(2) COLLECT information. Take pictures of everything: your vehicle, the other vehicle, the locations of the vehicles after the wreck, the other driver’s tag and insurance information. A picture is worth a thousand words and often the car that hits you looks worse than your vehicle.
(3) CARE for yourself. Go and see a medical professional if you feel pain or stiffness, persistent headaches, numbness or tingling going down your arms or legs, or pain in any other area of your body. If you wait to see a doctor hoping that the pain will go away or suffer in silence, an insurance company will use that against you.
(4) CALL Conway Law. Insurance companies are in business to make money and try everything to diminish the value of your claim. You need someone with knowledge and expertise fighting for you. If you have questions, please reach out or take a look at our website – www.chrisconwaylaw.com.

Thank you for trusting Edison Prep with your student’s college prep needs!
Brought to you by – Edison Prep
The team at Edison Prep is honored to be named the Best Tutoring Center in Appen Media’s “Best of Perimeter” 2025 for the fourth year in a row!
At Edison Prep, we work with students to help them achieve their goals in standardized testing and in college admissions. It is our honor to help 2,500+ students every year prepare for the SAT, ACT, PSAT, and AP History exams. In March 2025, we celebrated our 25,000th student since our inception! We couldn’t do it without the incredible communities of Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Brookhaven and beyond, who continue choosing our company for their SAT/ACT test prep and academic tutoring needs.
Brian and Silvia Eufinger co-founded Edison Prep in 2010, offering 1-1 tutoring in students’ homes and local coffee shops. In 2011, Brian and Silvia published the first edition of Edison Prep’s SAT and ACT curriculum—comprehensive workbooks with test content, strategies, and practice materials—which they continue to revise each year. The company soon added AP History Bootcamps to the yearly rotation. And since then, we’ve expanded our offerings to include SAT and ACT group courses, accelerated bootcamps, online video courses, newly-expanded academic

tutoring and AP tutoring options, and much more! The founders still teach all the SAT and ACT group classes (which is highly unusual in the test prep industry).
We pride ourselves in being a boutique tutoring agency with a small, highly experienced team—trained by Brian and Silvia— that has over 160,000 hours of experience in handling the private fine-tuning tutoring that about 66% of our students do after taking a group class. We pay at the top of
the market to retain top instructors who live and breathe these tests, be it by taking the real exams each year, dissecting tests that are hot off the presses, and/or helping to continually refine our curricula and materials.
Edison Prep is frequently invited to speak about test prep and admissions at high schools, national education conferences, and education podcasts. In 2020, the National Test Prep Association elected
Edison Prep co-founder Brian Eufinger as a board member.
And, we are fortunate to continue growing our offerings! In 2023, we expanded our office space and added team members; in 2024, we reworked our SAT curriculum to align with College Board’s new digital SAT. And in 2025, we’ll be revising our ACT materials to reflect the ‘enhanced’ test format that debuts in September.
We provide numerous free services— including live parent info sessions on college admissions, test changes, and merit scholarships—because we believe information shouldn’t be restricted by paywalls. In 2024, we also built a free scholarship database at www.meritaidgrids.com, connecting students with scholarships at over 200 colleges based on their academic statistics!
All our services are available both inperson at our office and virtually. While most of our students are in greater Atlanta, technology allows us to serve families around the world: we have worked with students in 35 states and eight countries!
Our scheduling team is happy to help students create timely test prep plans that address their unique needs. Students and families can access free test prep resources, including diagnostic mock tests every weekend, and much more, at edisonprep.com.

You made this more than a vision
Brought to you by - Regency Centers
From the very beginning, we’ve seen Dunwoody Village—and our neighboring centers like Dunwoody Hall, Ashford Place, Williamsburg @ Dunwoody, Sandy Springs Plaza, Cornerstone Square, Cambridge Square, and Powers Ferry Village—as more than just places to shop. These are community spaces. Living, breathing parts of the neighborhood where connections happen, memories are made, and everyday errands turn into something much more meaningful.
We dreamed of a walkable, welcoming destination that felt like Dunwoody’s own version of “downtown.” A place that captured the heart of this city. But a dream like that only works if the community sees themselves in it—and you did. In fact, you’ve turned that dream into something far greater than we could’ve imagined.
We see it in the way patios fill up with conversation on sunny afternoons. We see it when neighbors run into each other unexpectedly and decide to stay a little longer. We see it when local business owners wave to familiar faces and when families turn a quick stop into a special outing.
You made that happen.
So, from all of us: thank you. For showing up. For supporting your local businesses. For being part of this journey—whether you’ve been here since the beginning or just discovered us this
week. This place works because of you. It grows and evolves because you care about what it becomes.
This is your space. We’re just lucky enough to help shape it.
We’ve said that before, but as the years go on and the stories keep unfolding, it only becomes more true. That’s why we’re pausing again—to say thank you for the second time in as many years. And honestly? We hope this becomes a tradition.
If you haven’t yet seen the story behind it all, take a moment to visit our YouTube page (youtube.com/regencycenters). You’ll find behind-the-scenes glimpses and a Dunwoody spotlight that reminds us why we do what we do. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about buildings or landscaping or parking—it’s about community. It’s about belonging. It’s about that feeling you get when you realize this place was made with you in mind.
And we’re just getting started.
We’ll keep listening, improving, and investing in ways that make this neighborhood stronger. Because that’s what neighbors do. And if we get to be part of your daily routine—even just for coffee, a haircut, a quick grocery run, or a walk with a friend—that’s something we’ll never take for granted.
So here’s to you, Dunwoody. Thanks for making these spaces something special. We’re honored to be along for the ride.

Thanks for the Love (Again)
We’re proud to be your favorite shopping and entertainment plaza at Dunwoody Village, and all of the other centers we operate in the Perimeter! Come see us soon because there’s still plenty more to come!

that’s in a private house, assisted living community, apartment setting or receiving additional assistance in a health facility as you recuperate.
Hilary and Greg Eldridge set out thirteen years ago to build a home care business dedicated to raising the bar for in-home care, and have also been honored for the past eight years with the Best Home Care for Seniors in North Atlanta. “Our new Care Lead Team is one of the exciting changes that has been embraced by our clients” says Hilary. “The “Best of the Best”, our care leads are our most experienced, skilled and exceptional professionals. They work with your dedicated caregivers from the first steps of your care journey through your ongoing care changes. A new caregiver on your team starts by
shadowing with a true expert who briefs them thoroughly on all the details of your daily schedule, care and activities. It’s our job to make any transition painless for you, whether it’s covering for a vacation or a change in skill levels as your health care needs change.”
If your caregiver has an emergency, you can feel confident that you’ll be seeing one of our top care leads who knows all about your needs and has amazing skills. No worries about having to explain what your daily schedule and needs are, what happens if your caregiver goes on vacation, needs a day off for personal reasons, or if your situation changes. Our Care Lead Team is there to provide an exceptional level of worry free care oversight. When the basic activities of life
get more difficult to navigate for your older loved one or specialized care is needed for Alzheimer’s, Dementia or Parkinson’s support, a skilled, heart-centered caregiver can manage daily personal care, help around the house and provide emotional support. In-home care can be the key to a successful and speedier recovery after an extended hospital stay or recuperation after a stroke. Round the clock care after surgery for those first days at home is critical, and can be revised as you improve.
We’re here to help, from six hours a day, several days a week to 24/7 and live-in care. For a free consultation please call Home Helpers of Alpharetta and North Atlanta at (770) 681-0323.

Importance of skin checks for mature skin
Brought to you by - Dr. Kehinde Olumesi of Epiphany Dermatology - Brookhaven
As skin matures, it undergoes various changes that necessitate regular skin checks to ensure overall skin health. Differentiating between age spots, healthy moles and potential skin cancers is crucial. Age spots, often appearing as flat, brown, or black spots on sun-exposed areas, are generally harmless but can be mistaken for more serious conditions. Early detection of skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. Therefore, routine skin examinations are essential for mature skin to maintain health and catch any issues early.
Addressing skin conditions and rejuvenation procedures
Dermatologists can assist with a variety
of skin conditions and rejuvenation procedures for mature skin. Common issues such as dryness, age-related pigmentation and conditions like rosacea, psoriasis and eczema, which can persist or develop with age, are also addressed with specialized care plans.
In addition to treating conditions, dermatologists offer rejuvenating procedures to enhance the appearance and health of mature skin. Treatments such as chemical peels, laser rejuvenation and injectable treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improve skin texture and promote collagen production. These procedures not only rejuvenate the skin but also boost confidence and overall well-being. Establishing a relationship with a dermatologist ensures that your skin receives comprehensive care tailored to its evolving needs, promoting long-term skin health and vitality.

Each division, Patrol, Special Operations and Criminal Investigation has its own wing of the building different floors. There are meetings spaces for various task forces with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Federal
Program:

After Roswell Police reported a shooting incident at an apartment complex and fled to Perimeter Center, a drone operator located the suspect and directed patrol officers to his exact location within the crowded commercial area without alerting the suspect. It ultimately led to a peaceful arrest of a violent mental health subject.
Carlson stressed the importance of the technology, especially for a department that’s not fully staffed.
Right now, the Dunwoody Police Department’s patrol supervisors have the specific certification from the Federal Aviation Administration to launch and fly the drones from the roof of City Hall.
“Since then, we’ve had a lot more successes and expect a lot more of those in
Bureau of Investigation.
Civilians with different departments like records supervisors, clerks and crime scene investigators have brand new offices designed specifically for their work.
Mayor Rusty Paul said the Sandy Springs Police Department is a leader in Metro Atlanta and sports a waiting list with dozens of names at a time when other departments
the future,” Fladrich said.
He said the FAA is currently in the process of approving a radar unit on the roof of the 3 Ravinia Drive tower.
Once the radar is in place, the Dunwoody Police Department’s drone can be deployed anywhere from the field. Fladrich said the combination of the drone, license plate readers and camera systems are “an amazing force multiplier.”
City Councilwoman Stacey Harris asked about the drone’s ability to service the east side of the city, including Brook Run Parks for Lemonade Days Festival April 23-27.
Dunwoody is just over 13 square miles, and because City Hall and the Police Department are on the west side off Ashford Dunwoody Road, there may be coverage issues to the east.
The system notifies the drone when it’s on low battery, so it can return to its launch pad to pick up a new battery and
struggle to stay fully staffed.
“This is a significant milestone for the city for Sandy Springs as we are in our 20th anniversary year,” Paul said. “We’re putting a lot of resources on the North End.”
After announcing around $8 million in federal grant disbursements from the Atlanta Regional Commission for the North End Boulevard and PATH 400 projects,
return to service.
Fladrich said the drone has anywhere from 30-45 minutes of flight time, so accessing the Peachtree Industrial Boulevard area via drone before officers arrived would be difficult.
“Flying to Brook Run is not going to be an issue,” he said. “Weather conditions make a big difference … this is a part of the implementation phase.”
Fladrich said most crime in the city occurs around Perimeter Center, which the drone can access easily. Another important application is for traffic control and emergency response along the city’s portion of I-285.
The drone program proposal drew successive critique from council members.
City Councilman John Heneghan said he recalls hearing at the retreat that the Police Department would need two drones to cover the whole city. Heneghan said his top concern is how the city would be able to fund the program next year.
Councilman Rob Price said the program would be great for the city, but he wants to have a policy made public in case residents are concerned about the drone flying in their neighborhood.
Councilman Tom Lambert asked about language in the contract referencing a 12-month term with two payments, different from separate six-month periods referenced in the city’s memo.
“I just want to clarify that if we approve this, we are actually committing

Paul said the city is planning to construct a “tactical instruction center” on the hill to the northeast of the complex. The de facto training facility with a simulated shooting range has been in city plans for a few years with sketches showing a potential Fire Station abutting Morgan Falls Road.
The Sandy Springs Police Foundation is currently fundraising to help construct the planned tactical instruction center.
to (and again I’m hoping that we have that $100,000 for next year) a full year,” Lambert said. “I just want to make sure that if for some reason it doesn’t work out in the next six months, that we aren’t on the hook for $100,000.”
Mayor Lynn Deutsch said the city just has funding for the initial six-month period because the city has yet to begin its 2026 budgeting process.
After a discussion about the contract with City Attorney Ken Bernard and Flock Safety Regional Manager Steve Hampton, the City Council voted unanimously to table action on the contract.
Bernard said he’s not convinced the city should approve the contract until the opt-out period is clarified
Hampton said the initial pilot period is happening now, and the agreement was worded to have the 12-month term with two $100,000 payments kick in after it ends June 30.
The item will come back before the council April 28.
Deputy Chief Fladrich said the Dunwoody Police Department’s goal for its drone program includes exponential growth in computing power and artificial intelligence.
“There is ultimately a vision that we will hopefully have the Real Time Crime Center staffed, more so on a full basis, to where those folks could even fly it,” Fladrich said. “There will always be new technology … upgrades … better ways to do it.”

That was so great Annie Moon. It made that woman feel important that you were interested in her and her family. By being curious, you will learn many things.
No. 3: Ask permission before taking, and abide by the answer. You know what that means, right? You know about asking permission and not fussing if you don’t get it. That is just a way to be respectful of others Annie.
No. 4 : Share. We know about sharing.
No. 5: Say “thank you” when someone gives you something. When someone helps you or is kind to you, you should try to help them and be kind to them back.
No. 6: Never take the first one. Never take the last. A lot of adults never learn this one, Annie. Be patient. Wait in line. Let parents or grandparents or very young children go ahead of you. This is being respectful of others.
Rules: A
No. 7: Only take what you need.
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
This is another one that many adults never learn, sweetie. Do you know why?
You can show them this lesson by your example. Adults have so very much to learn from children.
No. 8: Never take more than half. Leave some for others. Yet another one that many adult’s parents never taught them. If you take more than half, is there much left for others – for your friends and their friends?
No. 9: Harvest in a way that minimizes harm. And what you harvest, use respectfully. Never waste what you have taken. Boy, that is a lot to understand. Do you think it might mean not to be selfish or greedy? And do you think that if everyone always tried to take the most they could take, that many people would have nothing while some people would have so much more than they need?
Remember, we all need each other. We also need the plants around us because they help us, too. We need the clean water and air that we drink and breath, but it is not clean and safe if we don’t respect it and take care of it at the same time.
The City of Dunwoody Zoning Board of Appeals will meet on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in the Council of Chambers of Dunwoody City Hall, located at 4800 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338, for the purpose of due process of the following:

In Memoriam
J Vernon “Nick” Nicodemus, Jr.
May 20, 1935- March 26, 2025
J Vernon “Nick” Nicodemus, age 89, of Dunwoody, GA passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025. Nick was blessed to be a blessing to his family, friends, church, and community. He was a beloved brother, husband, father, and grandfather, born on May 20, 1935 near Kearney, Nebraska. His parents, John Vernon and Helen, raised him and his sister in David City, Nebraska.
A strong faith, love of family, patriotism, and passion for Scouting set the foundation for his life journey. He earned his Eagle Scout rank and then aced Philmont’s survival camp, an experience captured by Life magazine.

Nick attended Nebraska Wesleyan, where he met the love of his life, Mary Catherine Barnes. After two years, he transferred to Georgia Tech, joined Theta Chi fraternity, and proudly served in the U.S. Naval Reserves. In 1957, he graduated from Tech with a B.S. in Textile Engineering and married Mary.
Nick had a successful 25-year career as a fibers engineer and marketer for Monsanto. His career brought the family to Atlanta in 1966. He and Mary ultimately settled in Dunwoody in 1974. Following his retirement, this entrepreneur founded Nick’s Nuts, a nut and gift giving business.
Nick loved Dunwoody and was “all in” as a member, volunteer, and/or leader for Kingswood UMC, PTA, Boy Scouts, Touchdown and Takedown Clubs, and DHA. Notably, he and his friend Bill Robinson revitalized the Dunwoody Fourth of July Parade in 1991 to honor Gulf War veterans. They served as parade co-chairs for 14 years
and were grand marshals in 2006. This is now the largest Independence Day parade in Georgia, a testament to their vision and community spirit.
Nick enjoyed birdwatching; playing cards, tennis, and golf; and patronizing The Masters. He was an avid fan of Atlanta Braves baseball and Georgia Tech and Nebraska football. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Mary; their five children: Jim, Bill (Karen), Nancy, and Tommy Nicodemus, and Tammy (Michael) Boswell; eight grandchildren: Casey, Keegan (Marybeth), Kirk, Luke, and Sarah Mac Nicodemus, Melvina James, and Henry and Will Boswell; and six great-grandchildren: Wilder, Ezra, Shepherd, and Judah Nicodemus, and Marleah and Kimora James. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Dick (Penny) Barnes, cousin Robbie (Carol) Ostberg, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marci Jo Lambert, in-laws: Gary Lambert, Ginny and Don Johnson, and John Barnes; and nephew Darin Barnes.
The family wishes to thank Renee Critten and her I’d Rather Be Home Homecare team, whose loving care and compassion over the past four years will always be remembered.
A memorial service to celebrate Nick’s life will be held at Chamblee First United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Nick’s memory to Dunwoody Preservation Trust (https://dunwoodypreservationtrust.org/) or Chamblee First UMC (https://chambleeumc.org/).
