MILTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Just over a week after 17 victims were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, police responded to students threatening violence at two local schools. A student at Northwestern Middle School in Milton threatened his school and a West Forsyth student was arrested Feb. 22 for a threatening post on social media. According to the Milton Police incident report, the 13-year-old Northwestern student threatened the school in a Snapchat message around the time of the Parkland shooting. The report stated that a resource officer with the school was informed by “multiple” parents of the message. The student was suspended and, according to a Fulton County Schools police spokeswoman, was later arrested by Sandy Springs police for terroristic threats. According to Captain Charles Barstow, Milton Police were first informed of the Northwestern threat around 8 a.m. on Feb. 20 by a parent. Milton police immediately made contact with Fulton County Schools Police to “ensure there was not an active threat to our residents or children in school within our jurisdiction,” Barstow said. Milton police were informed by a school resource officer that the threat had occurred “about a week” ago, according to the police report. Milton and Alpharetta police responded to the suspect’s home and were informed that the suspect and his mother were at counseling and there were no firearms in the home. Barstow said that Milton police are making further inquiries and are working with Alpharetta police because the student lives in Alpharetta. “We intend to remain in contact with all law enforcement agencies involved to stay abreast of any new developments, should they occur, and will work with them to ensure the safety of our children,” Barstow said in an email. It was not clear at press time if the
suspect had been arrested. On Feb. 21, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a threatening social media post regarding West Forsyth. The post “depicted a firearm and a potential threat of violence,” according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office. Along with the Forsyth County School System, the Sheriff’s Office conducted interviews with students and parents and were able to identify and locate the suspect, the statement said. Detectives with the county’s Major Crimes Unit and School Resource Unit then interviewed the 16-year old suspect and his parents. “Based on the findings of the investigation, the student was taken into custody and charged with one count of terroristic threats and acts and turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice,” the statement said. The Sherriff’s Office had received several reports of suspicious activity during the week but no others were found to be a credible threat, the statement said. “However, this situation was different and was a legitimate concern,” it said. “We continue to strongly urge students, parents and [faculty] to say something if they see or hear of any suspicious activity.” Then a day later, a 15-year-old West Forsyth student was arrested after he reportedly authored social media threats against the school. The Sheriff’s Office says it believes the student acted alone. “The safety of our children is of the utmost importance, so we take all information seriously and continue to encourage students and parents to share information,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “Furthermore, it is also important for parents to remind their children how severe their words can be, regardless of what context they are spoken, and they can trigger serious concern and consequences. Threats, in any capacity, are not a joking matter.” — JOE PARKER

Burglars steal jewelry from couple’s home FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A couple returned home recently to find about $15,000 worth of gold jewelry stolen. The couple said they came home around 10:30 p.m. and had been inside for about 20 minutes when the wife walked into the master bedroom and saw it had been ransacked while they had been out. This was the only room that appeared to have been touched. The bathroom window was broken. Gold jewelry, worth about $15,000, seemed to be the only missing items. Neighbors said they didn’t see any suspicious activity.
Man charged with assault for stabbing girlfriend FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A woman reported her boyfriend stabbed her in the knee recently after she had “aggravated” him. The 17-year-old woman said she was “aggravating” her 21-year-old boyfriend when he told her to stop. She thought he was joking, so she continued until he reportedly stabbed her in the left leg below the knee. She didn’t know what type of knife was used, but she surmised it was probably a pocket knife. She went to the hospital and received two or three stitches, she said. The boyfriend was charged with aggravated assault.

What is Chalazion? By Kate Lohman, O.D.
What is a chalazion? The eyelid glands, known as meibomian glands, normally produce an oily substance that contributes to the natural tears on our eyes. If one of these glands becomes blocked, it may develop into a chalazion or a stye (i.e. hordeolum). A chalazion is a large, non-infectious cyst in the eyelid that often takes several weeks to develop. A chalazion is not painful and usually occurs on the upper eyelid. This is likely because the upper eyelids anatomically have Kate Lohman, O.D. more glands (about 50 versus only 25 glands in the lower lid). Symptoms may include: eyelid drooping (ptosis), redness, and on rare occasion lid swelling. Interestingly enough, the term chalazion comes from the Greek word “khalazion” which means “small hailstone.” What causes a chalazion? A chalazion can be caused by either inflammation of the meibomian glands or it can start as a hordeolum. A hordeolum, also known as a stye, is often more acute and can be secondary to a bacterial infection of the eyelid glands. A hordeolum is smaller, more painful, and more tender to the touch than a chalazion. If a hordeolum is present for several weeks, it may develop into a chalazion. Some individuals are more prone to developing a hordeolum or chalazion than others. Common risk factors include: acne rosacea, chronic inflammation of the eyelids, poor eyelid hygiene, and meibomian gland dysfunction. How is it treated? The typical treatment regimen for a chalazion includes hot compresses with digital massage several times per day for approximately 2-4 weeks. This softens the oils and inflammatory cells, blocking the eyelid gland and helps the mass drain. Contrary to popular belief, topical antibiotics are not effective since a chalazion is not due to an infection. If a chalazion does not resolve within approximately one month with hot compresses, then other forms of intervention are usually necessary. Typically, either a steroid injection or surgical incision and curettage is used to remove the cyst. If surgical removal is deemed necessary, it is performed as an outpatient procedure with local/topical anesthetic. If a patient has a recurrent chalazion or hordeolum, an extended course of low-dose antibiotic, typically a drug called doxycycline, may be prescribed to reduce chronic inflammation in the eyelids. Why do I need to make an appointment if I notice a new growth on my eyelid? Differential diagnoses for a chalazion include much more ominous conditions such as: sebaceous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Sebaceous cell carcinoma is rare but highly malignant and can be lethal if left untreated. It is typically yellow in appearance but may also look eerily similar to a chalazion or hordeolum. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of eyelid cancer which typically begins as a red bump on the lower lid. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is uncommon but can be deadly. SCC can present as a red, patchy lesion that may even bleed intermittently. These lesions must be biopsied in a timely manner to rule out malignancy and be treated accordingly. https://www.aoa.org/patients-and-public/eye-and-vision-problems/glossaryof-eye-and-vision-conditions/chalazion https://pedclerk.bsd.uchicago.edu/page/hordeolum-stye-chalazion https://eyecancer.com/eye-cancer/conditions/eyelid-tumors/basal-cell-carcinoma-eyelid-cancer/ https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/squamous-cell-carcinoma

Forsyth Schools address school shooting protocols By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Feb. 14 school shooting in Florida has spurred Forsyth County Schools to sharpen its focus securing student safety on campus. The issue gained even more attention last week when two West Forsyth High School students, one 15 and the other 16, were arrested in separate events after reportedly posting threats aimed at their school on social media. Forsyth Schools Director of Communications Jennifer Caracciolo said district officials have met multiple times since the Feb. 14 Florida shooting, and have been in daily communication with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. “Code Yellow” drills are practiced annually, and 28 school resource officers are in the schools. A video, available at vimeo. com/112519042, explains to students and staff how the district responds to lockdown alarms and during a “Code Red,” which is an actual emergency.
“We modify our plans as needed annually,” Caracciolo said. “For safety reasons, we do not discuss specifics.” The district has held two largescale training events in the past few years where school personnel and local first responders prepare for such situations. Last year, an active shooter drill was conducted at West Forsyth High School where almost 200 role players and more than 100 first responders participated. On a more personal level, several high schools have responded to the Florida shooting differently based on the needs of their community, she said. “South Forsyth High School held a 17-minute remembrance and launched balloons,” Caracciolo said. “Lambert High School had grade-level meetings with administrators. Forsyth Central High School had 17 minutes of silence/ no technology.” In the wake of the shooting, a nationwide National School Walkout event has been planned for students to leave their school building at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes on March 14. In the wake of the shooting, a nationwide National School Walkout event has been planned for students to leave their school building at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes on March 14. Atlanta school systems have responded, some saying the walkout would be counted as an unexcused absence, and others saying they would support students’ right to protest. According to the official National School Walkout website, a group at South Forsyth High School is planning
to participate. School administrators in Forsyth County are developing their own plans with students to commemorate the tragedy. They hope to develop a peaceful and non-disruptive manner for students who want to participate, Caracciolo said. School staff and counselors are always available for students who find it difficult to deal with trauma, she said, and school administrators and staff communicated with students throughout that week following the Florida tragedy. “Once a threat is reported to a staff member we work with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office to investigate,” Caracciolo said. “We encourage all members of the community to use the anonymous Campus Crime Stoppers. School safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you see or hear something, say something.” To contact Campus Crime Stoppers, visit forsyth.k12.ga.us/Page/635 or call the hotline at 770-205-4625 to make an anonymous report.

fice to apply to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a Law Enforcement and Behavioral Health Partnerships for Early Diversion grant program. The amount would be up to $330,000 and the county is required to chip in 25 percent, or no more than $82,500. If the county’s application is successful, the grant would run for five years. The grant won’t be awarded until October. If the county is awarded the grant, it would help the Sheriff’s Office train more deputies, hire a mental health therapist capable of helping those in need and potentially prompt them on a course to counselling rather than to jail. The program would help the Sheriff’s Office improve how to intake mental health patients and how to better respond to mental health needs in the midst of a crime or when they get a call. Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said last March the commission voted to commit $40,000 for a survey to be conducted on the county to determine how mental health is handled. The results suggested the grant opportunity, which is through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. According to that group, the purpose of the grant is to establish or expand local programs that divert adults with a serious mental
illness or a co-occurring disorder from the criminal justice system to community-based services prior to arrest and booking. “If we do get it, the money goes toward the Sheriff’s Office to deal with how we intake mental health patients, mental health in the midst of a crime or when they get a call,” Mills said. “I was told alarming statistics at a mental health meeting that our Sheriff’s Office is dealing with about 1.1 or 1.2 calls a day that have to do with mental health, whether attempted suicide, threat of suicide or an actual suicide. Those numbers don’t even include the school’s numbers of 300 and something students who have attempted suicide. It’s a huge issue we have to look at how we deal with it.” While the Sheriff’s Office has some resources for handling mental health issues, it’s not nearly enough, said Sheriff Ron Freeman. Freeman said the state has pushed community treatment and he suggests getting more help for Avita Community Partners, a local resource for those experiencing mental health effects. “I would love to see this beef up Avita or a similar partner,” Freeman said. “I love the thought that when we find a person in crisis, we don’t end up with the jail being the mental health ward. That’s not what it’s designed to do. We have to get better for our kids. We owe it to them.”

How to identify a sick tree It’s easy to miss when a tree is growing sick. Most tree health problems grow slowly, with little visible difference from one day to the next, until leaves change colors or the canopy begins to thin. The longer it takes to spot problems, the more likely the tree’s illness will become serious enough that it needs to be removed. However, if you can catch the signs early and call for an arborist, it may be possible to

treat the sickness or damage and save the tree. Keep an eye out for these common signs of trouble: • Look for wilting or oddly-colored leaves, either along one or two limbs or all over the tree. • Check for cracks appearing in primary limbs or even in the trunk of the tree. • Examine dead branches, which may simply need pruning, but which can also indicate that a tree is in poor health. • Watch for decaying or hollow spots, especially along the trunk and around the joints of the limbs. • Look for insect damage, such as chewed leaves, holes made by burrowing bugs, silk webs and nests, and dripping sap or honeydew. Forsyth Schools sets up ‘digital citizenship’ plan By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — To help students be the best they can be both in and out of the classroom, Forsyth County Schools is implementing a Digital Citizenship Plan to guide students on how to behave appropriately online. Forsyth Schools Director of Instructional Technology and Media Jason Naile and Media Specialist on Special Assignment Kristen Deuschle said they spent the last year to review what schools are doing for digital citizenship and looked at best practices around the country. “As a leading district in technology, we should be doing as much as we can to prepare our students for the world they’ll live in after school,” Naile said. “Over the last several years, technology has become ubiquitous in our lives and is becoming more so. Devices are in the hands of children of all ages, and the environment our youngest students grow up in is dramatically different than what was experienced 10 and even five years ago.” Naile said they want to be proactive with students to help them as much as they can in this area and help students
understand the role technology should play in their lives. “As a parent of a kindergartener, I can only imagine what he’ll be doing 10 years from now and what the classroom and daily life will look like then,” Naile said. In 2009, the district passed a policy about how to “educate minors about online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites. The policy included conduct in chat rooms and measures to combat cyberbullying as required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act.” That helped establish the current practice whereby schools subgmit an Internet Safety Plan that has a narrow focus on internet safety and online privacy. But, that ignores other critical areas, Naile said. Now, they’re looking to move to a Digital Citizenship Plan next year that will include a broader coverage of topics that were identified by the district transition team as high need areas. “We want to help students and parents understand how to balance life, school and technology,” Naile said. “As educators and parents we need to be able to model that and understand it as well.”

The new plan will better align with the county’s Learner Profile, he said, specifically in the areas of “exhibit strong personal qualities,” “engage and contribute” and “interact effectively.” Additionally, they’re hoping this helps prepare students for college or a career. In the past, it was believed students’ digital habits were formed in middle school, but Naile said they now will focus on elementary students. Deuschle said they narrowed the topics to focus on five domains, including: • Cyberbullying/self-image • Digital footprint and responsibility • Online safety and privacy • Creative credit and copyright • Information literacy • Kindergarten and first grade would only focus on online safety and privacy along with information literacy lessons. “We’re hoping schools will create a new Digital Citizenship Action Plan with a school vision, team roles, responsibilities, timeline, resources and how they’ll get their parents engaged,” Deuschle said. Army Corps seeks public feedback on Lake Lanier By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Improving boater behavior, controlling erosion and adding more restaurants were just a few of the suggestions the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Mobile District received Feb. 20 regarding operations at Lake Lanier. Staff fielded these suggestions at a public meeting at the Central Park Banquet Room, the first of four public meetings the agency will hold, with others scheduled in Buford, Gainesville and Dawsonville. At the meeting, the public was updated on the status of a Recreation Capacity Study and Master Plan Update for Lake Lanier. The Corps began a Recreation Capacity Study in October 2017 to review current and future recreational needs and capacity at the lake. The study is expected to be complete by the end of 2018 with results released by the end of 2019. The study will be used to update the Lake Lanier Master Plan, a comprehensive land and recreational management tool that “guides the stewardship of natural and cultural resources and the
Input from those and the current meetings will give the Corps a framework on what issues are most prominent. The current Master Plan was developed in 1987 and is in need of updates due to changes in regional land use, population, outdoor recreation trends and the Corps’ management policy. County staff cut the ribbon to the new Voter Registration & Elections Office.

New county voter, elections building opens By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The new Forsyth County Voter Registration & Elections Office officially opened for business Feb. 26. The building, located at 1201 Sawnee Drive in Cumming, houses more than 500 voting machines and will serve as the site where absentee ballots are printed. The office was previously located in the Forsyth County Administration Building with a storage facility at another location. The new $2 million facility enables the department to consolidate their two locations from 13,000-squarefeet to about 20,000. “This will make our jobs easier and more efficient,” Voter Registration & Elections Director Barb Luth said. “Therefore, this will save money.” Voter Registrations and Elections Board Chairman Donald Glover said the facility was needed to keep up with the ever-growing county population. Glover was the chairman of the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners several years ago and since
has been heavily involved with the voter department. “I’m thankful for a lot of things and this is one of them,” Glover said. “The staff and poll workers are another. They keep us going.” County commissioners hold the county purse strings, Glover said. “They’re supposed to hold them real tight and I think they do a good job at it,” Glover said. “We had a lot of traffic out of [the old location], and we went to the commission to see if they’d build us a location built to do what we do. They listened and considered seriously. I mentioned there was land they already own. They told us to make plans and we did.” Then-Commission Chairman Pete Amos, said while the board holds the purse strings, this building is funded by taxpayers. “We needed a building the county could be proud of because the old one was leaky and wet,” Amos said. “This is the end work of all that. We can use this building for many years and Forsyth County can call it theirs.” The Voter Registration & Elections Office can be reached by telephone at 770-781-2118, ext. 9 or by email at voter@forsythco.com.

Transportation Summit updates residents on what they’re paying for By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The annual Forsyth County Transportation Summit recently brought together officials to discuss key projects that impact local drivers. The Feb. 21 event, held at the Forsyth Conference Center, included Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell McMurry, GDOT District Engineer Brent Cook, U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall and Forsyth County Commissioner Cindy Mills. “Transportation is a key topic for every community, most especially one like Forsyth County that has experienced the extensive growth we have,” Mills said. “The sheer number of road projects underway and being finished in Forsyth County is certainly the exception and is not commonplace in other counties across Georgia.” To give an idea of the magnitude of the progress occurring in Forsyth, Mills said right now there are 19 projects under construction. And just since the last transportation summit in late 2016, 18 projects have been completed. “We are a forward-thinking county that is no doubt setting the example for

other communities across the state and nation in terms of addressing transportation,” Mills said. “Yes, gridlock still exists. We all still get stuck in traffic
sometimes. But it’s clear that progress is being made. I know this when I hear from people who are getting home 30 to 40 minutes earlier because of transportation improvements.” The county is near the end of the process of updating its comprehensive transportation plan, the guiding document outlining the long-range vision for transportation in the county. The plan update looks at all of the changes that have occurred in the population, employment, land use and development since the last update in 2011. “It’s taking a close look at the transportation needs of people who live, work and play throughout the county and will result in projects to address vehicular, freight, bicycle and pedestrian needs,” Mills said. “Generating a plan update that truly captures the spirit and desire of the various voices that represent Forsyth County is only possible through community involvement.” Some of the key projects already identified in the update include widening Post Road, widening McGinnis Ferry Road from Sargent Road to McFarland Parkway, widening Ga. 306 from Ga. 400 to Ga. 369, and widening Ga. 9
from Fulton County to Cumming. In 2014, voters approved a $200 million Transportation Bond that already has completed projects, she said, including numerous intersection improvements, like the ones at Ga. 400 at Martin Road and Old Alpharetta Road at Ga. 141. The bond has also funded traffic safety improvements and added sidewalks along James Burgess Road, with many more projects in the works. Another funding source for road projects is the penny sales tax that voters have approved six times since 1987. SPLOST has funded the widening of Castleberry Road, Union Hill Road and Mullinax Road, and Phase 3 of Old Atlanta Road, as well as intersection improvements on Wallace Tatum Road, Holbrook Road and at Ga. 9 and Bannister Road. “When folks from surrounding counties come to Forsyth to shop, the sales tax they pay stays here and benefits our community,” Mills said. “When you see the orange barrels at these work sites, know that these are projects that are being delivered thanks to the penny sales tax. And know that we’re working to remove those orange barrels and finish projects as quickly as possible.”

Awards night honors outstanding deputies, civilians By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies and civilians who stood out in 2017 for their bravery and hard work were honored Feb. 20 at the annual awards Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office ceremony. The event, which took place at First Redeemer Church, celebrated men and women who stood out to command staff. Sheriff Ron Freeman said he has the “biggest honor” of working with the men and women in his department. “I have the best job on the face of the Earth,” Freeman said. “I get to be a cheerleader for a bunch of heroes. Who would not want that job? Yes, I get to set some policy and direction. But I get to be a cheerleader for these guys and girls in here who every day are out in our community. That’s something special.” He said many of the deputies are humble RON FREEMAN and would say they just Sheriff happened to be the person working that day. “Every single person who wears a badge and gun or who is an employee of (the Sheriff’s Office), and were placed in the same situation at the same time, would have done the same thing,” Freeman said. “By the grace of God, those folks happened to be there at that moment. It’s a reflection on that individual and the man or woman who wears this uniform and badge with honor every day.” Deputy 1st Class Jonathan Amos received a Commendation Bar. Deputy 1st Class Brandon Keenan, Deputy 1st Class Bob Abanto, Amos, Deputy 1st Class Guy Velia, Deputy 1st Class Mike Jones, Cpl. Kevin Mitchell, Deputy 1st Class Michael Eaton and Sgt. Martin White all received Life Saving Awards. The winners of the Medal of Valor awards were Deputy 1st Class Tom McCullagh, Lt. Scotty Spriggs and Deputy 1st Class Drue Green. On Dec. 21, 2017, McCullagh arrived on scene of a single vehicle crash in which the driver was trapping in a burning vehicle. McCullagh attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher but was unable to. He broke the car window with his hand and was able to keep the fire off the trapped driver until other units arrived. Spriggs and
Green arrived and were able to assist in keeping the flames off of the driver with their extinguishers until firefighters arrived. Two men were awarded Purple Heart awards including Deputy 1st Class Rod Reeves. In the early morning hours of Nov. 18, 2017, Reeves was on patrol when he heard a call issued to be on the lookout for an impaired motorist. Reeves pulled over on the shoulder of Ga. 400 near Exit 13 to scan for the vehicle. While Reeves was observing traffic, the alleged violator slammed into the back of Reeves’ patrol car at a high rate of speed. Reeves was trapped inside his car and was unconscious. Forsyth County Fire Department arrived and worked quickly to get him out of the vehicle. Reeves regained semiconsciousness, but was in extreme pain. Over the next few months, Reeves underwent numerous surgeries and is still recovering from his injuries with physical therapy. Deputy Jon Beival was also awarded a Purple Heart. Green, Lt. Scotty Spriggs and Lt. Brent Weeks were all awarded a Medal of Honor during a domestic violence call. On July 16, 2017, deputies were dispatched to a call in which a male reportedly threatened to kill his girlfriend with a firearm. The female was able to escape from the residence and call for assistance. Upon arrival, deputies demonstrated teamwork as they surrounded and contained the suspect at the residence. As a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team, Beival responded to the call and attempted to communicate with the suspect on the PA system. Without provocation, the suspect allegedly opened fire on the deputies with an AK47. The suspect fired over 70 rounds from within the house. Beival was struck in the right leg. Weeks and Green returned fire into the residence and Green immediately began to apply a tourniquet to Beival’s leg. Spriggs placed himself in harm’s way, disregarding his own safety and ran to Beival’s location. Spriggs helped Beival get to a safe area and drove him to the hospital. Beival has fully recovered and returned to full duty.
I have the best job on the face of the Earth.”

City finalizing Habersham Sewer connection By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — The City of Cumming approved Feb. 20 the third and final phase of a project linking residents in the Habersham community with the city’s wastewater treatment system. At least four communities make up the Habersham community, according to city Director of Utilities Jon Heard. The sewer on Buford Dam Road serviced about 400 homes including Habersham on Lanier, Habersham at Lanier, Townhouses at Lanier/Lanier Golf Club and Habersham-Lanier Pointe. Habersham has gravity sewer lines, large networks of underground pipes that use gravity to move water from homes to the city’s treatment plants. When the Habersham pump station began failing early last year, the city had to take that system offline and connect the Habersham gravity sewer lines onto the city’s pump stations so the wastewater could go back to the city’s wastewater plant, he said. The city is dealing with several issues surrounding the Habersham Wastewater Treatment Facility, which is privately owned and sits on about 10 acres. It has been run for the past 30 years by a homeowners group known as the Habersham Action Committee. That group now has complete ownership of the treatment plant and land, Heard said. A fire last spring spurred the City Council to initially condemn the plant and build a new facility to service the neighborhood. Since the condemnation attempt in April 2017, Heard said the city worked
to get an appraisal of the property to offer fair market value, obtain an accurate survey and evaluate its usefulness for the city to build its own treatment facility on the site. Soon after, the council rescinded the condemnation after Heard said the property is not optimal to build a future wastewater treatment plant. “We backed out of that and all that was left was the flow through the gravity sewer lines to be addressed,” Heard said. “No flow is going through Habersham Wastewater Plant at this time. No treated wastewater is going out to Lake Lanier and hasn’t for two months. That’s because the city has totally bypassed that plant.” The city is designing a new water reclamation facility to replace the failed Habersham sewer, but said it would cost roughly $10 million. The new facility would cycle about 15 million gallons a day. Both county and city officials say the old sewer plant had a life expectancy of 20 years, was in “bad condition,” and emptied into Lake Lanier. The city has invested about $500,000 so far, Heard said. After the fire in April, the city moved customers to its own sewer system and sent residents a bill for $6,250 per household for the connection. Residents were given 90 days to pay, but that deadline was extended. “The components of the sewer system are also failing and in disrepair,” Heard said. “We believe the money we collected or will collect, close to $2 million, will be earmarked to improve the gravity system that’s now serving those customers. They’ll have the assurance of ongoing, uninterrupted sewer service from here forward.”

For some of the city-county community leaders to have that type of vision so long ago – and now it’s created a wonderful central hub for all the technology companies. NANCY HOEHN, ACC executive director 14 | Forsyth Herald | March 1, 2018
Alpharetta Chamber hires new executive director Local business group seeks to expand service to its membership By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce has selected Nancy Hoehn as its new executive director. An Ohio native, Hoehn comes to Alpharetta from Orlando, where she spent the past year as director of community/membership development for the Lake Nona Regional Chamber of Commerce and West Orange Chamber of Commerce. Before that, she was director of membership for the East Orlando Chamber. With an extensive background in operations management, Hoehn says she was drawn to the city by its business vision and its commitment to quality of life.
“My first impression of the city and the business community was pretty impressive,” she said. “I thought to see a city that’s grown so much in such a short period of time, I think that exemplifies the great vision and HOEHN dedication of the leaders in the community. I was impressed with the fact that it has one of the most robust and redundant fiber-optic networks in the South.” While at the Lake Nona Regional Chamber, she said they had a similar infrastructure which helped create huge growth in the area over a short time. “For some of the city-county community leaders to have that type of vision so long ago – and now it’s created a wonderful central hub for all the technology companies,” she said. “Accomplishing this and still keeping that small-world charm and uniqueness of
the community, I thought that was very impressive. It’s a beautiful community.” Hoehn said her background in chamber operations will help her meet goals set out by the local chamber leadership to cultivate a more vibrant organization that attracts more members. “I’m happy to have the opportunity to lead the Alpharetta Chamber at this level,” she said. “Having that experience I’ll be able to bring to the table and help the chamber grow.” Now in its fifth year of operation, the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce is governed by a 28-member board of directors, local business leaders seeking to foster the business and residential climate in the city. It has 375 members, and the board wants to increase that number. Hoehn said some of initiatives the board would like to see are more educational opportunities for members and business growth. Providing business education and mentorship to the entrepreneurial community will be another focus, she said.
“To grow the chamber, we want to make it a ‘go-to place’ for the community, so that we have a lot of information, education and opportunities for the business community to grow their business and be supported by the community,” Hoehn said. Riding the wave of recent growth, the Alpharetta Chamber is ready to move to a new level, she said. “The chamber right now is actually very strong,” Hoehn said, adding that the organization has already established a sizeable footprint in the city. Taking things to the next level, she said, will probably involve developing staff and departments to expand the organization’s services. “The board really has a good vision of where they want the chamber to go, and they’ve taken the steps to start putting that in place,” Hoehn said. “I think that, with the steps that have been taken now, we’re positioning ourselves to really be a good, strong community leader.”

Rid out to move on and move up By Kimberly Wright Counter Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty
The words “rid out” may not mean anything to some of you. In fact, the first time I heard those words from my grandmother, I had no idea what she was talking about. I soon learned, however, that they perfectly describe what most everyone else calls “cleaning out.” To my grandmother, cleaning a house started with getting rid of the clutter, or in her words, you first need to “rid out.” In my career as a REALTOR®, I have learned to appreciate exactly what my grandmother’s words meant. Every day, I have the pleasure of viewing homes for sale in all price ranges throughout the northern Metro Atlanta area in my quest to find the perfect home for my clients. Homes that have been “ridded out” always make the best impression. Getting rid of the clutter in your home before putting it on the market makes selling it so much easier. However, to get rid of the clutter, you must first understand exactly what clutter means to a potential buyer. In a home for sale, clutter is anything that distracts a buyer’s attention from the details of a home. To fall in love with a home a buyer needs to truly see
the home. After viewing a home, a buyer’s comments should not be about the homeowners wedding photo, the sports memorabilia on display or the soccer trophies in your child’s bedroom. If so, then I know immediately, that the buyer did not see the home, they just noticed all of those personal treasures. The buyer focused on the COUNTER clutter. Ideally, a seller wants a buyer to concentrate on the home’s features, like the architectural details, the neutral color pallet, the size of the kitchen or the beautiful wood floors. Personal items on display can be hazardous to an easy sale. Be a smart seller; box it all up and put it away. Additionally, clutter can make a home feel tight, instead of spacious. Open spaces appear to be larger spaces. Detouring around an overstuffed ottoman in the great room to enter the kitchen makes the entire space appear smaller. When they enter a kitchen, buyers should see the lovely cabinets and granite countertops, not the cookbooks. Also, don’t forget the closets. Buyers love, love, love spacious closets. With good planning, even the
smallest closets can look spacious. Help your home sell faster by storing all excess furniture and cleaning out the closets. Store the off-season clothing, and organize your shoes, purses and other items. Every buyer should leave your home knowing that your closets are big enough for all of their clothes. Neatly, store excess items in your garage, basement, or attic, rent a storage space for a short time, or ask a friend to help store things temporarily. Perhaps it is time to make a Goodwill donation, always a great option for items that you really don’t need. Get rid of the distractions and create that extra space in your home, and you will add dollars to your sale by selling faster at a better price. “Ridding out” will definitely help you move on and move up. This is the second is my series of articles about preparing your home for sale. If you missed the first one, please contact me, and I will be a happy to send you a copy of my article, “Updated vs. Outdated.” Staying competitive is the key to home sellers reaping the rewards of a quick sale at the best price. If you are thinking of selling your home, I would love to help you accomplish that goal. Contact me at 678.938.5885, or kimberlycounter@atlantafinehomes. com and let me help you move on and move up!

The Gorgeous Kitchen How did this happen! I bought this house in the 1980’s or 1990’s because it had a desk in the kitchen, two level breakfast bar with Corian counters, garbage compactor, soffits above the cabinets and it was completely separated from the den. What’s changed? North Atlanta came of age in the 80’s and 90’s; thousands of homes were built with all the above features, so if this sounds like your kitchen, you’re not alone. But now it’s time for you to join the North Atlanta Renovation Evolution. Your home has doubled in value and you now live in arguably the most desirable Atlanta suburb with the best schools. Homeowners are joining this Renovation Evolution and further increasing the value of their homes. The kitchen is starting point for this Evolution. The kitchen is no longer just the place for food preparation; it’s now the social and lifestyle hub of the family and the kitchen has adapted to suite its present function. Style has never been more important within the kitchen but the features and configuration have changed. Here’s what’s changed in the 2018 kitchen. Openness is The Standard. “Removing the kitchen/den wall is included in over 80% of kitchen remodels”, comments John Hogan, owner of Remodeling Expo Center in Roswell. The kitchen is the family hub and it just can’t be separated from the family room. “Connectivity” is the new design theme in kitchen design. The common formula is to add the new large island exactly where the wall was removed. Single Level Islands/Peninsulas. A single level island or peninsula dramatically increases its functionality. The island has turned into a multi-functional surface; eating area, buffet for entertaining, homework area, etc. Plus, with advent of gorgeous countertops, a single level emphasizes the beautiful characteristics better. Quartz or Granite. These are the absolute standards. Don’t consider anything but these options. Whether for style, aesthetics, function or durability; an updated kitchen must have granite or quartz. Stay away from complicated edges, like ogee, and keep is simple. Cooktop On the Wall. “We’re moving the cooktop to a wall location and creating magnificent tile focal points on many of our kitchens” says Remodeling Expo Center’s, John Hogan. “Moving the cooktop to the wall or moving the microwave from above the cooktop, each of these design strategies yields

When it’s time to replace your water heater (NAPSI)—The next time you find you have a too old or already broken water heater, these tools and advice from the U.S. EPA can help. Water heaters typically last about 10 years. If your water heater is older than that, you could avoid a potentially costly and complicated emergency replacement by taking action now. In many places, utilities offer rebates on ENERGY STAR certified water heaters, up to as much as $600. With or without a rebate, choosing a model that’s earned the government’s ENERGY STAR label can pay you back in energy bill savings. Water heaters are the second highest energy user in the home, costing a household of four up to $620 every year to run. Replacing your old, electric water heater with a heat pump water heater could put a significant dent in your energy costs. In fact, a family of four can save up to $3,500 in energy costs over the water heater’s lifetime. Pointers On Heat Pumps There are some installation considerations to keep in mind with heat pump water heaters, but if you already have an electric water heater, it could be an easy switch. Will a Heat Pump Water Heater Work in My Home?
In many homes, a heat pump water heater can be installed right where your current water heater sits. Heat pump water heaters need: Access To Air: They pull in air from the surroundings to heat water and release cold air, so they need access to plenty of air.
The water heater location should have a room air temperature greater than 40° F year-round and space that’s at least 100 square ft. (10 ft. x 10 ft.) or a smaller space that can be fitted with louvered doors or ducted. Head Room: Heat pump water heaters are a few inches to a foot taller than conventional electric water heaters and require a certain ceiling height based on the size of the water heater—which is dependent on household size. The water heater location should have at least a 6-ft.-high ceiling for a household of fewer than six or at least a 7-ft.-high ceiling for a household of six or more. Water Drainage: Heat pump water heaters require proper drainage, since—like air conditioners—they dehumidify air and produce condensate that must be removed via a nearby floor drain, or another outlet using a small condensate pump. The heater location should have access to one of the following: • Floor drain • Utility sink • Sump pump • Existing drain pipe • Outside (only for locations that are above freezing all year round).
