Jewelry, silverware taken during move ROSWELL, Ga. — Several pieces of jewelry and silverware were reported stolen Feb. 20 after a woman started unpacking in her new home. The woman told police that she had moved to Lake Forest Circle in August 2017 and that she had secured the jewelry and silverware in a drawstring bag and box prior to the move.

While unpacking months later, the family noticed that two rings, a bracelet and the 12 piece Dueberry International Silverware were gone.

Several people had been in the residence for remodeling since they moved in, the woman said.

The Roswell Police Department must comply with 484 standards in order to gain accredited status. The department has been nationally accredited since 1995.

Once the CALEA assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted reaccreditation status.

Each assessment consists of three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.

reported Feb. 26 that someone had stolen $1,000 from their store after pretending to update the store’s computer system.

The employee said that someone had called the Kroger on Ga. 9 and said that there was an issue with the system for Western Union. The caller told the employee that they needed to access the store’s log to perform an update to the system.

The employee gave the caller the store’s account number and login information. After the information was entered, the system rebooted, but Western Union stayed down.

According to Western Union, two transactions were made that day, for a total of $1K, both to a Univision prepaid card.

The employee did not remember much about the caller’s voice, and police were not able to find the phone number used in the call.

reported Feb. 21 that someone had forced their way into the maintenance shed and stolen $1,200 worth of equipment.

The incident occurred overnight Feb. 20 while no employees were present.

Police verified that someone had pried open the shed, damaging the latch and frame. Damage to the doors alone was estimated at $2,500.

Game systems stolen during home robbery JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A man reported Feb. 20 that multiple game systems, worth $700, were stolen from his residence while he was away.

The man returned to his home at 7:30 p.m. that night at Hunts Pointe Drive, only to realize that the wooden gate to the backyard was open. The rear door leading to the garage had also been forced in.

Springtime Q & A with Dr. Thomas Chacko Rated one of the Top Allergists in Atlanta and selected for the cover of Atlanta Top Doctor Magazine, Dr. Thomas Chacko is Atlanta’s expert in Allergies and Asthma. With recent speaking opportunities on CNN, HLN, WebMD, and Fox News, Dr. Chacko is sought after nationally for his expertise in all areas of adult and pediatric allergy and immunology.

These days though, Dr. Chacko is extremely busy with Atlanta’s exceptionally high spring pollen counts. Here are some Q and As to learn both about Dr. Chacko as well as treatment for springtime allergies.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Queens, N.Y. My parents still reside in Bayside Queens—where I grew up. I only left home to attend college at Penn State University and then medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

When did you discover medicine and decide to make it your career?

My mother is a pediatrician, and I always admired how much she enjoyed her work. That led me to medicine. I knew at a pretty young age that I wanted to be a doctor, likely around 9th grade or so.

How did you discover allergy medicine and decide that it was the right specialty for you?

In my first year of residency at NYU, a fellow resident told me to check out the field of Allergy/Immunology. I learned I get to take care of both children and adults as well as get to know families (as allergies tend to be hereditary). I did a few rotations and really fell in love with the field. To this day, I’m very happy I chose this path and hope to practice as long as I can.

Do you have a mentor or someone who has been instrumental in your career?

Again, It would be my mother. She loved what she did and it was also how she provided for our family.

Will you tell us a little bit about your family?

My wife is a high school teacher. She taught at both Miton and Cambridge and now works partime in my practice. I have 3 children, Christina, 10 years old; Jaya, 8; and TJ, 7. We live in the area, a community called Harrington Falls in Alpharetta. All 3 children attend Alpharetta Elementary (Go Eagles – both AES Eagles and Superbowl champs – Philadelphia Eagles – my wife is a hardcore Philly fan).

What can we do to help treat these springtime allergies?

I would recommend you watch the pollen counts to help gage what the environment would be like.

I would try to minimize exposure , possible by driving with the windows up as well as keeping the windows closed at home. Saline rinses are also a natural way to help clear your sinuses of pollen and mucus. Also there are good over the counter medications such as the antihistamine and nasal steroid sprays.

Then, you should likely go see an allergist. There are many other treatments, such as immunotherapy than can desensitize to the pollen. Most of my patients who are on allergy shots are doing much better with the spring pollens.

Any other tips?

Don’t let your spring be miserable. See your doctor and get on the proper treatment to enjoy the springtime.

Alpharetta passes initiatives to manage downtown parking Council sets fees for inadequate stalls, expands hourly limits

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A pared-down Alpharetta City Council passed sweeping changes to its downtown parking policy Monday.

The new plan expands the number of city-owned spaces that impose time limits, and it sets a fee for new and expanding businesses who fail to provide adequate parking on their own property.

For close to a year, the city has tried to settle on a parking management plan for its Downtown District, which has seen a flood of commercial, office and residential growth in the past decade.

The first proposal passed Monday included three changes to the Downtown Code relating to parking. It sets out minimum requirements for private schools, establishes payment-in-lieu fees for businesses with inadequate parking and provides the City Council with the authority to grant exceptions for parking requirements on a case-by-case basis.

The revised code sets a payment-in-lieu fee com-

mercial property owners must pay for each space they do not provide on their own property. The fees are set up on a graduating scale whereby the city charges $4,500 for the first five spaces. Fees increase to $8,000 each for the next 15 spaces, and so on.

Alpharetta’s Downtown Code requires a minimum number of parking spaces for certain types of businesses based on their size. Typically, the city requires one parking space for every 333 square feet of office space and for every 500 square feet of retail. If a development is found lacking, the owner must pay a fee for each deficient space.

Ostensibly, the money collected from these fees helps the city develop new parking accommodations.

“There is no perfect solution to parking,” Mayor Pro-Tem Donald Mitchell said after the 4-0 vote. “I really feel this plan as proposed is sensitive to small businesses by only charging $4,500 per space, so we can get the mom-and-pop businesses in our downtown as we desperately need.”

Prior debate among council members centered on whether taxpayers are subsidizing business owners for parking space. Based on the most recent cost calculations for the new Milton Avenue parking deck, each parking stall runs about $24,000.

Mitchell, however, argued that businesses use the

spaces only one-third of the day, and residents and visitors benefit from their availability the rest of the time.

Along those lines, the City Council heard from downtown property owner Jim Parsons who criticized the city for failing to keep up with parking demand.

The city has historically failed in holding business owners accountable for parking, he said. The revised code, he argued, is not enough to accommodate demand.

“I don’t see how we can afford to have inadequate parking for a new development,” he said. “We already have inadequate parking, and we can’t afford to have any more.”

In a related matter, the City Council agreed to expand the number of downtown public parking spaces that are subject to time restrictions.

The downtown area already imposes time restraints in some areas of Main Street, Milton Avenue, Canton Street and along one row of stalls at the city lot on Old Roswell Street.

The revised plan imposes a three-hour limit on all parking in the Old Roswell Street lot (with the exception of four privately owned stalls) and sets time limits along new streets within the Teasley Place development in downtown.

Backers for the facility have spent the past two years planning for the Alpharetta site, but the legislative failure could divert their attention to Houston, where regulatory laws are less severe.

Georgia requires healthcare facilities to undergo a regulatory process that includes a certificate of need, whereby a medical center or hospital must show its services do not overlap with other nearby facilities.

State Sen. John Albers introduced a bill in February that would cut through much of the regulatory red tape, but it failed to muster enough support to survive last week’s crossover deadline in the Senate.

“I was disappointed Senate Bill 462 did not make it out prior to the crossover deadline,” Albers said in a statement Friday. “We had very little time after legal challenges were hastily adjudicated.”

The Legacy Sports Institute would have brought an estimated 200 jobs to the area.

The state Department of Community Health approved the Andrews project in 2016, saying it would offer the type of quality care not currently available in the area. But, local hospitals WellStar North Fulton and Northside appealed

that decision in court, and a Fulton County Superior Court judge sided with the hospitals, reversing the state approval. In February, the state Court of Appeals affirmed the Superior Court’s ruling.

Backers of the project circulated a letter at the Capitol from Smoltz, who credited Andrews with extending his pitching career. It wasn’t enough to move legislators into pushing the bill forward.

“We will continue this important fight to allow the free market to thrive in Georgia,” Albers said. “Dr. Andrews is vitally important to our community and state. We should be rolling out the red carpet for him and my intention is to streamline this process and remove antiquated laws.”

Representatives from Legacy Sports Institute did not return requests for comment about the bill’s failure.

In a press release issued earlier, the company said the facility was planned to feature operating and procedure rooms, rehab facilities, a sports performance center and athletic fields.

Andrews is associated with four facilities throughout Alabama and another near Pensacola, Fla. He began practice in Columbus, Ga., where he gained notoriety as a leader in the treatment of devastating elbow, knee and shoulder injuries.

Commissioner on opioid crisis: ‘There is hope’ Official seeks to fight deadly draw of drugs

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Zachary “Zack” Elliot was 21 years old when he disappeared overnight from his in-laws’ house in Newnan.

Zack, whose family had a history of alcoholism, had willingly undergone months of treatment for opioid addiction prior to his sudden disappearance.

He had a stable job, went to AA meetings every day and seemed to be on the right track.

“He was doing everything he was supposed to be doing,” his mother Robin said.

But on April 30, 2011, Zack relapsed — he drove off into Atlanta at night and called a heroin dealer.

“I started praying,” Robin said after Zack’s family couldn’t locate him. “Just please let my son be in jail. Because I thought, those were the only two options.

“But at 3 p.m. that afternoon, I got the call that they had found his body in

the back seat of his grandparent’s car.

He had overdosed on heroin.”

Zack had traveled to “The Bluff,” a neighborhood located southwest of Georgia Tech, which has been labeled “The Heroin Capitol of the Southeast.”

But the opioid problem is not isolated to that small section of Atlanta.

The city’s northern suburbs, including Alpharetta and Johns Creek, have seen sharp spikes in opioid-related deaths in recent years. So much so that portions of North Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties have since become known as the “heroin triangle.”

Zack’s story has become a familiar one to many families living in the affluent suburbs.

On March 4, dozens of these community members met at Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church in Alpharetta to hear Robin and County Commissioner Bob Ellis speak about the rising opioid crisis in North Fulton.

“The numbers are staggering, and they have not gotten any better,” Ellis said. “The death rate in Fulton County alone is about double the national average.”

The opioid crisis encompasses three types of drugs: prescription pain killers, heroin and synthetic opioids such as

fentanyl and carfentanil. And while there is no one “silver bullet” solution, Ellis said, there is hope.

“The numbers are staggering, but there is hope,” Ellis said. “This is a man-made crisis. And we all have it within our powers, if we all work together in different ways, to end the epidemic. We can change the script on those numbers.”

Each year, there are two national drug takeback days held for people to safely dispose of unwanted prescrip-

tion drugs to avoid potential misuse from family members or friends. Proper disposal can be crucial as up to 70 percent of opioid abusers get pills from their friends and families, Ellis said.

Additionally, there are 23 drug boxes spread out across Fulton County that allow for year-round collection.

Non-prescription opioids are harder to deal with. Fentanyl and carfentanil are both newer types of opioids that

The two are almost indistinguishable from heroin, and dealers and buyers often can’t tell the difference.

Overdoses from fentanyl and carfentanil often require multiple doses of naloxone, an opioid antidote, to reverse.

Since 2016, Fulton County has committed $98,000 to outfit emergency responders with naloxone.

Ellis also said he was a “big believer” in creating more behavioral and mental health resources within schools and youth communities to help youth avoid drugs and alcohol as an escape.

Fulton County has already implemented one initiative, the first in the Southeast, to provide an anonymous 24/7 texting line for youth in crisis.

It currently has pilot programs in Milton, Cambridge and Roswell high schools.

After Zack’s death, Robin helped pass Georgia’s 911 Medical Amnesty Law on April 24, 2014 and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Georgia Overdose Prevention. The law ensures protection for people who call 911 seeking medical assistance for someone experiencing a drug or alcohol-related overdose.

Neither the caller nor the victim can be arrested, charged or prosecuted for small amounts of drugs, alcohol or drug paraphernalia if the evidence was obtained as a result of seeking medical assistance.

“There are no real second chances for my son,” Robin said.

“But what we’re trying to do is provide second chances for other people… If they’re alive, there’s hope.”

Our first reaction is to ‘do something.’

School shootings are a plague on the public psyche and happen not because of one single legal, moral, medical, or societal construct fails but because of lapses of adherence to laws and common sense.

We don’t respect or trust our teachers enough. The media reports stories of students asserting their rights in the classroom, and the teachers are being stripped of authority. This is a grave sin. Teachers are willing to die to protect their charge and should be given complete support. We should also consider allowing those willing and skilled to be armed.

There are root causes to school shooters: a fractured home life, impulse control requiring medication, detached from community, callous to life, bullied, mocked, a loner. The killer’s history of erratic behavior now looks glaring in the carnage at the school, but he is ultimately responsible. The lack of accountability by the authorities has been appalling.

Hollywood has always been fascinated with the darker side of mankind. We pay to view film and spend moral equity rationalizing it. Conflict is resolved at the point of a gun. Parents should use more discretion in what their children watch. At issue is the unformed value system of teenagers who still possess self-control problems.

Legislation cannot fix everything, and frequently changes nothing of substance. The NRA supports gun legislation and the laws we already have and would support reasonable legislation going forward. The operative word is reasonable, and the debate becomes hysterical on that one thought.

The Second Amendment guarantees the right of a person to defend himself, his loved ones, and his property and has done more for civil rights than any government program.

It is an equalizer for defense from harm or tyranny.

But it does not confer a right to attack, which is a crime and must be dealt with swiftly, and if need be, severely. Murder, and the evil heart required, is not caused by guns.

A lack of respect for the dignity and sanctity of human life is a root cause. We are a selfish people, whose cultural identity is warped by disdain for the most fragile among us.

We should protect the most innocent of human life, without rationalizing an individual right of convenience. It isn’t only about changing laws, but of changing hearts, minds, and values. Love your neighbor. Want to do something? Start there.

Fulton Schools to host safety meetings at Centennial High Six new police officers hired by district

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Fulton County Schools will engage the community on the topic of school safety during a public forum Thur​sday night at Centennial High School in Roswell.

The two-hour meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

“Parents have asked for more information about the strategies and measures in place to keep their children safe, and that is the goal of these meetings,” said Shannon Flounnory, Fulton Schools executive director of Safety and Security.

Superintendent Jeff Rose will lead a discussion on current security measures, including how ongoing training, drills and safety plans prepare schools for potential scenarios. The forum will also go over the investments that have been made across the district to enhance security.

“The meeting will open as a general session to hear from the district’s safety experts,” Rose said. “Attendees will

then be divided into small groups to provide feedback on the discussion.”

That feedback will be shared with the Safety and Security team for strengthening the district’s current practices.

Members of the Fulton Schools police force, local police departments and school system counselors will be on hand to address community partnerships, mental health and preventative strategies.

The decision was made by the Fulton School Board during a retreat last week and was due in part to the school shootings in Parkland, Fla., last month.

“Our Safety & Security staff had previously been tracking trends of critical concerns occurring throughout the country within our nation’s schools

and decided to be proactive within the budgetary asks,” said Shannon Flounnory, Fulton Schools executive director of Safety and Security.

“The decision is considered a critical need and underscores the school board’s commitment to safety and security following the tragic Parkland, FL. shooting.”

The additional police will bring to 69 the total number of specially trained, POST-certified Fulton Schools’ officers who patrol and secure all district schools and auxiliary buildings. Officers are assigned to every middle and high school in the district, as well as some elementary schools.

Once hired, the six new police officers will go through 4-6 weeks of field training before being assigned their patrol beats and school assignments. The time from vacancy to when an officer reports for duty is about 6-8 weeks.

The positions will be paid for through the end of the year using funds from the district’s reserves. In future years, they will be funded through the general fund. The Fulton County Schools Police Department is a division of the school system and was created in 1989 to provide armed law enforcement within the district.

Fulton Schools now support student expression on March 14 Middle and high schools to provide time for walkout

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -Officials with the Fulton County School System have reversed their policy on the National School Walkout Day on March 14, and are now allowing a “structured, organized” event that morning for students who wish to participate.

“This is a learning opportunity for our students,” Fulton Superintendent Jeff Rose said. “The district will provide support to schools, ensuring a supervised environment. We will allow students to respectfully express their support for those impacted by the Parkland, Florida shooting.”

At 10 a.m. on March 14, all middle and high schools will have adjusted bell schedules to participate in “expressions of support for the Parkland, Florida community,” Rose said. The event is optional for students.

Organized by the Women’s March Youth EMPOWER group, the March 14 event calls for students, teachers, school administrators and others to take part in a 17-minute school walkout at 10 a.m. that day to protest what the group believes is Congress’ inaction to do more about school violence.

Originally, Fulton leaders said students would face disciplinary action if they left classes without permission to participate in the nationwide walkout.

Reasons cited were primarily for safety and disruption issues.

Rose said the conversation on school violence and safety will continue, with principals and school staff listening to students and their ideas about how to express themselves. But parameters will remain in place.

“The Fulton County School System fully supports these student expression activities provided they do not disrupt the school day,” Rose said.

Georgia lawmakers act on safety and recess Education voucher plan dies on Crossover Day

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Georgia legislators got serious about school safety protocol, quickly acting on a bill that mandates preparedness drills in every Georgia school.

The bill was one of several education related bills that passed their original chamber by Feb. 28 (Crossover Day) and remain alive this session.

Senate Bill 457, sponsored by Sen. Horacena Tate (D-Atlanta) was filed on Feb. 20 – just days after the school shooting in Parkland, Fla. – and mandates schools hold regular safety drills under the guidance of Georgia Emergency Management/Homeland Security.

The bill quickly passed the Senate, and the House is expected to provide SB 457 with similar safe passage to Gov. Nathan Deal’s desk before the end of the session this month.

Currently, all public schools in Georgia are required to have school safety plans – reviewed and approved

Catherine Howden, spokeswoman for GEMA/HS, said the agency is “closely monitoring SB 457, and if the proposed legislation is signed by the governor, we will work diligently to meet

the [requirements].”

House Bill 273, which addresses mandatory school recess, is on the way to Deal’s office after passing both chambers. But parents may want to temper their enthusiasm over big changes at their local schools.

Lawmakers stopped short of mandating daily recess in elementary schools, but strongly encouraged schools to “include an average of 30 minutes per day of supervised unstructured activity time, preferably outdoors” for all students in grades kindergarten through five. The exception would be on days where physical education classes are already scheduled, and in several other cases.

The legislation also says schools should not withhold recess for disciplinary or academic reasons. Legislators left it up to school leaders to determine recess for middle schools. And as with many state laws, the mandates can be waived for school districts under a charter agreement with Georgia, all but a handful of the state’s 162 school systems.

Many school systems saw the writing on the wall and have already taken action on recess at the urging of parents. Beginning next school

year, elementary schools in the Fulton County School System will have a minimum 15-minute recess each day, with a recommended 30-minute recess on non-PE days.

As with state law, Fulton schools will not be able to use recess as a disciplinary or academic tool, and middle school recess will be at the principal’s discretion.

Other education-focused bills that cleared their original chamber on Crossover Day and remain viable this session include: HB 718 - Gives schools the option to excuse certain absences for students with parents in the United States armed services.

HB 759 – Allows a student with a special needs voucher to remain eligible even after leaving the program for a while HB 852 – Allows a student to remain in their current school till the end of the school year if the family moves within the school district HB 978 – Provides for automated traffic enforcement devices in school safety zones SB 401 - Career-oriented aptitudes and career interests would be part of a student’s individual graduation plan.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — For years, Frank and Renee Sarrantonio, of Alpharetta, had been planning a trip, but they could never decide what to do. Now, thanks to Expedia CruiseShipCenters and the annual Appen Media Cruise Giveaway, they can have the vacation of their dreams.

Roswell to convert Canton Street into one-day park April 29

Thanks to Bike Roswell!, a nonprofit advocating safe cycling and improved infrastructure, and the city of Roswell, sections of downtown will be converted Sunday, April 29 into a public park for one day.

The inaugural Roswell Moves! event will serve a new iteration of the annual Roswell Cycling Festival. It will close off a five-block section of Canton Street, from the south end to Webb Street, Elizabeth Way, Norcross Street, the New East Alley, Plum Street and North Canton Street. The roads will be inaccessible to motorized vehicles and traffic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with activities taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This “open streets” program will invite people to explore their community with a new set of eyes — by walking, pedaling, rolling and playing.

near Ga. 9 and on North Canton Street near Woodstock Road. Some vendors will be permitted in the area, but Bike Roswell! is encouraging attendees to visit the local merchants spread out in the corridor.

The new Roswell Moves! event is scheduled the same Sunday that the Bike Roswell! criterium bicycle races have been held in the past. These races, part a larger cycling festival, have been a major part of the organization since

2002, with the inaugural Historic Roswell Criterium.

“Bike Roswell!’s goal is to transition from the Criterium to a more community-focused event that has potential to better engage the general public and local businesses in an actively, fun environment,” Walker said.

But the Criterium will not be completely gone. Fans can still expect to enjoy the Mayor’s Ride which will remain an anchor event for the new Roswell Moves! festivities. This bike ride, now in its 15th year, offers distances of 18, 42 and 64 miles, with all routes beginning at 8 a.m. from Roswell Area Park.

The Mayor’s Ride is the largest fundraiser for Bike Roswell! Early registration with a discounted $35 fee is available through March 31. The first 500 pre-registered riders will receive a free T-shirt.

Likewise, the Historic Roswell Kiwanis will keep its annual Kids’ Bicycle Safety Rodeo, a free event to teach children bicycle skills and safety tips.

Roswell Library renovation plans near finalization

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Library is quickly approaching the final stages for its planned renovations, after almost 30 years without any major updates. It is the third busiest library in the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System based on book circulation.

Thanks to a library bond referendum approved by Fulton County voters in 2008, the library system has been engaging in a $275 million project to build new libraries and renovate existing branches. The Roswell Library at 115 Norcross Street is one of 23 library renovations slated for Phase II of the project. Phase I was completed in early 2017 and consisted of 10 renovations, eight new libraries and two expanded libraries.

The renovations will concentrate on brick-and-mortar improvements such as new roofing, heating and air conditioning, safety equipment, carpeting, furniture, Wi-Fi and technology. It will not include any operational changes, such as altering the book catalogue, and it will not expand the 20,000 square-foot building.

The companies spearheading the renovations, including Hogan Construction, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture and Chasm Architecture, met with dozens of Roswell residents Feb. 23 to review proposed design plans and collect public input.

According to Will Bryant, Chasm Architecture senior project manager, the team has focused on areas such as improving mobility access, additional study and meeting places and increasing visibility of ongoing library programs. New furniture, lighting and technology will outfit the building.

Additionally, the Friends of the Roswell Library will have more space for their store and for storage under the new plans.

The proposed floor plan for the Roswell Library renovations call for a new cafe, quiet room, group study rooms and tech areas. cafe and a dedicated quiet room for studying and reading. The plans likewise call for a centralized help desk and several new self-checkout stations, including one at a new, secondary library entrance facing Norcross Street.

The renovation plans are not just constrained to the indoors. Outside, at the new Norcross Street entrance, will be porch space for people to enjoy reading outdoors. It will be accompanied with new signage, sidewalks and bike racks.

Many previous public comments called for a book drop-off that people

could use without exiting their car.

The team unveiled design plans such a drop-off near the current handicap parking spaces at the library’s main entrance, but several people were concerned that the drop-off was not attached to the main building. This could cause problems for staff members bussing the books back and forth with cars passing by, especially in inclement weather, commenters said.

The overall look of the library will be updated as well. Along with a fresh coat of paint, the design team is working on mirroring the look and feel of Canton

Street, with more open windows.

There will be space for new public and community art in the new building.

The tentative construction schedule is slated for October 2018-May 2019, as soon as the Sandy Springs Library completes its renovations to avoid any “library deserts.”

However, several public commenters said they supported working on both the Roswell and Sandy Springs libraries simultaneously to speed up the construction plans.

Once offering to award one in protest, Williams goes quiet on bump stock Michael Williams, a conservative candidate for governor, is quick to point out that he was the first elected official in the state to publicly endorse Donald Trump.

And for the past 18 JOE PARKER months, he hasn’t Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com so much ridden on the coattails of President Trump as much as clawed to his leg, begging for validation.

So when Trump recently suggested that he would push for the ban of bump stocks following the Marjory Stoneman Douglass High shooting, Williams, who normally heralds everything the president says, fell silent.

This is probably because following the Las Vegas massacre last October, Williams campaigned through his website that he would give away a bump stock to protest a drive to outlaw the devices.

“There is zero evidence that banning bump stocks would prevent any gun violence deaths,” Williams said in an Oct. 16, 2017 press release. “Georgia’s gun owners deserve a governor who will stand with them when liberals and Hollywood elites attack our fundamental rights. That’s why I am standing for the Second Amendment and giving away a bump stock as a show of support.”

Oops.

By Williams’ argument, Trump’s call for the ban on bump stocks is not only an attack on fundamental rights led by the left, it would also do nothing to deter mass shootings. That is probably not something you want on your resume when you are trying to be the president’s poster boy.

Williams, like his political idol, has campaigned on a strategy of inciting voters and playing to the fact he is not a career politician. But what could be more political than going quiet on a stance that you once held so strongly when party leaders come out in opposition?

And what could be more political than a little hypocrisy?

Around the Super Bowl, a release from Williams stated he is “done with the NFL” resulting from “watching the disgraceful kneeling antics of players during the National Anthem.”

In a press release regarding the school district’s challenge, Williams said: “The First Amendment will not be destroyed in Georgia!”

So free speech is fine for Williams.

Unless the challenge runs counter to the candidate’s own views.

Again, what could be more political than that?

If Williams wants to go to bat for Trump at every turn, I say by all means. But if you want to campaign as a non-politician, have the courage to go against your party.

Centennial lacrosse blows out Norcross to remain unbeaten Solomon records 500th career point in 22-1 win

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Just past the midway point of the second quarter in Friday night’s matchup with Norcross, Centennial looked well in control and set to begin the season 4-0. After the Knights’ 15th goal, the crowd let out a cheer when it was announced that the goal was assisted by Nicky Solomon. And with his assist, Solomon had secured his 500th career point.

According to LaxRecords.com, Solomon is just the 18th high school player nationwide to reach the milestone. The North Carolina commit is 120 points away from breaking the Georgia high school record of 623 career points, a record held by his older brother, Nathan.

Solomon netted five goals with eight assists against the Blue Devils, leading the Knights to a 17-1 halftime lead.

Solomon and many of the other starters were on the sidelines for the second half, but the Knights continued their dominance on their way to a 22-1 win.

It was a commanding performance that shows Centennial is again a favorite for the Area 7 championship and in state championship contention.

“Our goal is to win our area and take the No. 1 seed and play at home as long as we can,” head coach Bryan Wallace said. “It’s early in the season so it’s important to take care of those area games that set you up for the playoffs.”

With the rain and cold of recent weeks, the Knights have struggled to find adequate field time.

“We haven’t been able to get up on a full field because of the weather,” he said. “I think we’ve slowed down in terms of what we’d like to be doing.

With the weather getting warmer I think we’ll be able to stretch our legs and start to fill out what we’re looking at.”

The Knights’ roster returns standouts, such as Solomon and fellow attackers Ryan Siracusa and Colin Hall, but it also features new talent.

The Knights have outscored their last three opponents 62-8, including a win by forfeit in the season opener against Mays.

But the true test, and the one that should prepare the Knights for a playoff run, lie ahead.

Northview girls fall short in Final Four Titans fall in semifinals for second straight year

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CARROLTON, Ga. — Northview was overpowered by Lovejoy, 70-42, in the state semifinals on Saturday afternoon at the University of West Georgia, the Titans second straight loss in the Final Four.

“We ran into a really good team tonight, and we didn’t execute quite how we wanted to,” head coach Chris Yarbrough said.

Northview (24-7) had the arduous task of trying to contain Lovejoy’s sophomore standout guards Genesis Bryant, Region 4’s Player of the Year, and Anaya Boyd. But the Wildcats’ talented and quick offense proved too much Saturday, with Bryant, Boyd and center Kayla Brown combining for 45 points.

The Lovejoy (30-1) defense was impenetrable in the key for much of the first half, allowing the Wildcats to go on 10-0 and 8-0 runs. Though the Titans had waves of offensive production, they could not keep up with their Clayton

County opponents.

“We had to change some things, but their pressure got to us, and we had a tough time getting in flow offensively,” Yarbrough said. “I thought we fought back offensively at times, we could just never turn that corner.”

The Titans were also challenged when three of their starters got into early foul trouble.

Ashlee Austin and Eden Sample spent much of the second quarter on the bench after incurring three fouls

each in the period. Makayla Davis was sidelined late in the fourth after her fourth foul.

Austin, Northview’s leading scorer and Region 7 Player of the Year, fouled out with two minutes remaining in the game.

Visibly upset following the foul, Austin walked past Northview’s bench, her nose plugged after it began bleeding following a drive to the hoop. Titans’ senior Camil Butler immediately called to Austin and patted the chair next to her own. After Austin sat, Butler put her hand on her back and consoled the Northview standout as she put her face into her hands.

That moment exemplified the comradery among the Titans, as well as the importance of the team’s senior class, Yarbrough said.

“They love each other,” he said. “Our seniors, Butler and Jada Reidling, don’t get a lot of minutes, but they come out every night and work just as hard as everybody else. They really left our program in a better situation. They are the all-time winningest senior class for our program.”

Butler and Reidling have seen the rise to prominence for the Northview program first-hand. Just four years

ago, the Titans struggled through an 8-19 season. Since then, Northview has won 78 games, captured two region championships and made two straight appearances in the state semifinals.

“This squad has fought, scratched and clawed,” Yarbrough said. “We’ve gone through a lot of adversity this year and they kept their heads high the whole time.”

The Titans battled through losing their first Region 7-AAAAAA contests since the reclassification in the 201617 season, but still went on to win the region title. Austin, Davis and Innis also fought through injuries to lead the team to the semifinals.

“They are warriors,” Yarbrough said.

“I don’t think a lot of people in our school would play through what they did this year. I’m really excited how they fought every day.”

Though the season came to a disheartening end, the Titans could be in contention for another shot in the semifinals next season.

Austin, Davis, Innis, Eden Sample, Jade Buchannan and Maya Richards should all return next season.

“We have a lot of strength coming back,” Yarbrough said. “We have to use this loss as momentum going forward.”

St. Francis boys advance to state championship Girls team loses to Wesleyan

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com COLUMBUS, Ga. — St. Francis’ boys and girls basketball teams competed in Final Four matchups last Friday at Columbus State University. The boys team advanced to the Class A-Private state championship and the girls lost their semifinals matchup.

The boys punched their ticket to the state title game, their fifth appearance in the last six years, with a dominant 83-54 win over Holy Innocents’.

The Knights jumped out to a 40-18 lead at the half and outscored the Golden Bears in all four periods to advance.

St. Francis had five players score in double digits, with sophomore standout guard Dwon Odom leading

the offensive charge. Odom scored 20 points, followed by Sam Hines with 16. CJ Riley netted 12 points with three steals and Chase Ellis scored 11 with seven rebounds and two blocks.

Caleb Snyder had 10 points with five rebounds.

Friday’s lopsided win was the Knights’ third straight in the state tournament. They advanced to the semifinals with a 73-57 win over Walker in the second round and beat North Cobb Christian 87-62 on Feb. 28.

St. Francis faces Aquinas for the state championship Friday at 4 p.m. at Georgia Tech. The two programs met in the quarterfinals of last year’s state tournament with the Knights prevailing, 63-48.

Aquinas (26-5) is ranked fifth in the state in Class A-Private, two spots behind St. Francis (27-3), in Sandy’s Spiel poll.

Just after the boys game was completed, the Knights’ girls team battled Wesleyan for a chance to earn their third state championship appearance in four years.

However, the Knights were outpaced by Wesleyan who earned the 71-49 win.

Wesleyan opened the game on a 7-0 run and pushed their lead to double digits in the first quarter.

Though St. Francis cut the gap in the second, Wesleyan led throughout the period and continued their momentum for the remainder of the contest.

After earning back-to-back state championships in 2015 and 2016, the St. Francis girls team has been eliminated in the semifinals for two straight seasons.

Restaurateur rescues historic greenhouse The Union owner repurposes structure from old Milton High

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The old Milton High School in downtown Alpharetta has been reduced to piles of broken concrete, steel and drywall. Its demolition, which clears the way for a STEM school set to open in 2020, marked the end of the historic structure that had served students from 1921-2005 before the opening of the new Milton High.

Though the school no longer stands, a local business owner has taken the initiative to save a historic piece of the school.

Chris Sedgwick, owner of Milton’s The Union restaurant, has saved the old Milton High School greenhouse from the wrecking ball and will use the structure at his eatery.

“I own some property across from The Union that is zoned agriculture, and we always wanted to be able to offer locally grown produce at the restaurant,” Sedgwick said. “It seemed like a perfect opportunity for us to use the greenhouse.”

When Sedgwick learned the school was to be torn down, he jumped at the opportunity to purchase the 2,300-square-foot facility from Fulton County Schools.

“It took numerous follow-up phone calls to finally get them to sell it to me,” he said.

The greenhouse will initially be used to grow herbs and vegetables that will be served in The Union, but Sedgwick said “the sky is limit” for what can be grown in the structure.

“I have a niece that has worked at many farms, from flowers to wineries and even an aquaculture farm.”

Sedgwick said. “I am hoping to get her involved with this project.”

In addition to growing food, Sedgwick has also contemplated growing a vital ingredient to “liquid bread,” a moniker for beer.

“I have even considered [growing] hydroponic hops for our local breweries as we can get over five harvests per year,” he said.

For Sedgewick, the purchase of the greenhouse goes beyond a business initiative. It also serves to retain a vital piece of local history.

“I drive by the greenhouse every day and have always thought it was sitting there empty, wasting away,” he said. “The greenhouse was used by the school as a teaching greenhouse and many of the prior students have told me about their classes in the greenhouse. I am super excited to be able to repurpose and start a new life for the greenhouse as well as to keep it in Milton.”

The hoop house, a separate structure that covers plants in summer, has already been moved. The relocation of the greenhouse awaits a permit from Milton. Sedgwick said he hopes it will be moved in the next few weeks.

The greenhouse is the second accessory structure to be saved by local efforts.

The Alpharetta & Old Milton Historical Society led efforts to save the FFA cabin on the school’s property last fall. The initiative began in 2016, and after raising over $162,000, Alpharetta agreed to purchase the building.

It was moved off the school’s grounds last October and currently resides in Alpharetta greenspace along Milton Avenue in Downtown Alpharetta.

Most small business owners have different positions in their business.

Each position has a starting salary and may have annual pay increases based on time in the job. So an employee who has worked for you for five years may be making more money than one who has been working for one year but who has helped you double your sales. Does that sound fair? Guess what, it’s not.

The employee who helped you double your sales probably has sent their resume out to look for a new job. Why? Because you’ve made it clear in your compensation plan that contribution doesn’t count.

Compensation plans in small businesses need to be aligned to your business goals, such as sales growth or improving customer service. Employees need to know what is expected of them, and rewarded via additional compensation for their contributions.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, signed into law last December, will have the largest effects on companies with international operations, according to Justin Johnson, tax manager at Frazier & Deeter.

Johnson spoke Feb. 28 at the International Engagement Breakfast at Motovario Corporation.

“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a new bill that makes widespread changes to JOHNSON the Internal Revenue Code,” Johnson said.

“Although enacted less than three months ago, it’s already having a substantial impact on U.S. taxpayers.

From an international tax perspective, the act has been the single largest overhaul of U.S. tax law in over 30 years.”

Johnson said the act has brought major changes to how the country taxes income earned overseas. There are four key changes he anticipates will have the greatest impact on multinational companies.

They include: • The reduction of the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent. “One major pro-growth aspect of the legislation is the permanent reduction in the U.S. corporate tax rate to 21 percent, effective as of the first of this year,” Johnson said. “This change will reduce the cost of capital and increase investment and productivity. It will make the U.S. a more attractive place to invest in and headquarter a multinational company.”

• The transition from a worldwide system of taxation to a quasi-territorial one, via the 100 percent dividend received deduction.

“Where the Tax Act moves the U.S. tax system toward a more territorial system, the U.S. suddenly becomes a more attractive place to headquarter a multinational business and should, combined with the substantial reduction in the corporate tax rate, substantially reduce inversions and the acquisition of U.S. corporations by foreign corporations,” Johnson said.

• The one-time mandatory repatriation. “It’s been well documented that U.S. multinational corporations have housed an estimated $2-3 trillion of earnings offshore,” Johnson said. “Generally, a new law requires that foreign earnings that have previously gone untaxed must be included in a U.S. company’s gross income (i.e. brought back to the U.S. and taxed). These earnings will be taxed at a rate of 15.5 percent for earnings held in the form of cash or cash equivalents and 8 percent on other earnings. This deemed repatriation tax may be paid over eight years with the bulk of the liability being due toward the end of the eight-year period.”

• The introduction of incentives for companies that leave their valuable intellectual property in the U.S., and penalties for those that choose to migrate their intellectual property offshore.

“The last provisions discussed, require the current taxation of some foreign source income at reduced tax rates. The effective tax rate on foreign-derived intangible income is 13.12 percent and the effective U.S. tax rate on global intangible low-taxed income is 10.5 percent.

The rules governing those … are extremely complex and it is not immediately apparent what their actual effect will be. In general, however, intangible income is all income in excess of the product of 10 percent and the net of depreciation value of depreciable property.”

By combining these new changes to the U.S. tax law with the current economic make-up of the community, should usher in a new wave of innovation and investment in Forsyth.”

Company plans daycare center, office and hotel

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Sefira Capital, a Miami-based investment firm, has acquired a 13-acre lot on Webb Bridge Road in Alpharetta where it plans to build a new Phase Family Center.

Details of the sale, which occurred Feb. 28, were not disclosed.

The 60,000-square-foot facility will include a full-service daycare and afterschool programming for children ranging from 6 months to 15 years of age.

The Miami-based company plans to grade the other three pads on the site and make them market-ready for future development.

Mijael Attias, managing partner at Sefira Capital, said the company took a close look at the area and recognized Alpharetta as an up-and-coming community with potential to grow without losing its natural beauty and Southern charm. The project, he said, will be located near various tech companies which is attractive to investors.

Alpharetta is home to more than 600 technology companies.

“In just the past two years, Alpharetta has emerged as a businessfriendly environment,” Attias said. “The local community and government have welcomed new developments with open arms and really do seem committed to fostering connections and innovation in the city.”

GET OUTSIDE, GEORGIA:

An extra hour of fishin’ time!

Okay, so it’s coming whether we like it or not – the annual transition to Daylight Savings Time. This Sunday at 2 a.m., time as we know it will jump ahead an hour. That means STEVE HUDSON that in the mornGet Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net ing, when your clock tells you it’s 7 a.m., your body will be saying “No… NO!” and screaming that it’s really just 6 a.m.

That’s much too early to get up if you don’t have to do so.

But is it really so bad? Once I get over that initial chronological shock and recalibrate my circadian rhythm and start doing everything one hour earlier, Daylight Savings Time is not too painful. In fact, just a few days into it (and once I’ve gotten used to it) I decide it’s really a pretty good thing.

Why? Because it gives me one more hour of afternoon daylight, and that means I’ll have an extra hour of fishing time.

So now I have a decision to make.

Where should I go to enjoy that extra hour? So many waters, so little time…

But wait. To help me decide what to do with that gift from the Land of Circadia, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has just updated its 2018 Georgia Fishing Prospects. Waiting for you over on the DNR website (at georgiawildlife.com/fishing-prospects), this neat online resource gives anglers statewide a huge amount of information to help plan that next fishing trip.

Here’s how it works. Once you get to the “Fishing Prospects” site, you’ll find two lists – one of reservoirs and one of rivers. In the “Reservoir” category you have 32 different waters (from “Allatoona” to “Yonah”) to choose from; the “River Prospects” category offers an additional 21 choices ranging from the Altamaha to the Toccoa.

Let’s say I’m interested in the Coosa River (and I definitely am, since it’s one of Georgia’s best springtime white bass fisheries – something we’ll talk about more here over the next few weeks). I click on the “Coosa” link, and the site takes me to a summary page where I find not only an interactive and scalable map of the portion of river in question but also links to more detailed info on fishing the Coosa as well as specific insights designed to help me fish for various species which I’m likely to find there.

One species that’s listed, I’m glad

to see, is white bass. Clicking on the “White Bass” link takes me to a more detailed page where I learn (for example) that while white bass numbers in the Coosa are expected to be down a little this year, the size of the fish should be good with males averaging up to one pound and females running in the two-pound range. That’s good enough for me!

I also pick up tips on techniques to use while fishing for those fish, including suggestions on the best lures as well as some practical pointers on the techniques I’ll need to use to put those lures to work.

But the Coosa is a big place. Where should I go? The “Target” section helps me with the “where” part of things and points me toward some specific areas, with additional info on specific sorts of areas I should be targeting. I also pick up tips on the “when” part of the equation – not just the main white bass run, which occurs sometime between late February and early May, but also a secondary run in the lower part of the river which happens as the water cools in late fall and early winter.

There’s no doubt about it – this DNR site offers plenty of info to help me decide what to do with that extra

hour of daylight, and I plan to put it to good use.

And we’ve only looked at one species on one river. There is tons more info here (on myriad species in many different waters), and the danger is that you’ll spend that extra hour in armchair adventuring right there on the site instead of in fishing out on the water.

“Let me tell you, if you have used the annual Fishing Prospects in the past, you are in for a treat in 2018,” said Thom Litts, operations manager for the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division’s Fisheries Management Section. “If you are not checking out these prospects for your favorite water body before heading out, you are making a mistake.”

Thom’s right. Check this one out and start planning those spring fishing trips!

Six tips to help you manage kids’ screen time (NAPSI)—If any of the nearly 51 million schoolchildren in America today is someone you care about, you may find this information on kids and the internet quite intriguing.

To help your young students make the most of the online world while staying safe, heed these hints: 1. Share Space: Have a shared family computer in a common space. This lets you supervise your kids’ online time without hovering.

2. Limit Time: The length of an online session should match your child’s natural attention span. School-age kids’ brains can focus for about 30 minutes at a time, so they won’t really get much from sessions longer than that. A good idea is to set a schedule of computer time with dinner acting as a halftime.

3. Increase Freedom: Gradually give your children freedom to decide how to use the internet as they grow into teenagers. They will probably push for more freedom, a natural part of preparing for adulthood. Trust your teens to make good decisions and appropriately manage time online.

4. Turn To Technology: Everyone has preferred shows or spaces online and can watch anywhere via tablets and laptops. Instead of each family member staking out his or her own corner of the house, encourage everyone to gather in one room. This encourages you to share online activities and encourages conversation. When possible, seek out shows or online sites that appeal to all family members so at least some online activities become shared experiences and a focus of learning with and from each other.

5. Be In Control: Use the computer system’s parental controls to manage kids’ access online and prevent accidental exposure to content for which your children aren’t ready. For example, the nation’s largest internet provider, Comcast, has new technology called Xfinity xFi that makes this easy.

6. Let Tools Help Teens: Teen-

agers need to prioritize and manage their time, making sure that a healthy amount of sleep, an “unplugged” family meal, and academic and family obligations come first. A tool such as Xfinity xFi can help by letting you set and manage scheduled Wi-Fi hours.

You can also use it to monitor how often and when your teens are connected and, if they do spend too much time online, you can temporarily pause their Wi-Fi use.

What’s New in Melanoma - Part 2

By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta In last issue’s installment, we discussed what melanoma is and talked about true Mohs surgery for melanoma, a tissue sparing technique for removing melanomas and melanoma in situ in cosmetically and functionally sensitive areas. This week, we look into diagnostic, prognostic and treatment advances for invasive and metastatic melanomas.

One of the most exciting recent advances is a new method of genetic testing for melanoma. Pioneers at Castle Biosciences have developed a test that is performed on melanoma tissue and that can allow a doctor to better know how a melanoma will behave. The test is called DecisionDx-Melanoma. Remarkably, this test is capable of looking at genetic signatures within a melanoma and identifying whether a melanoma is likely to have spread or likely to have remained in place and have been cured surgically. The test is so accurate that it may provide even more information than a “sentinel lymph node biopsy” – a procedure that involves removing and testing lymph nodes to check for melanoma cells. In all likelihood, for many tumors, the DecisionDx -Melanoma Test and sentinel lymph node biopsies will be used together and provide previously unavailable predictive power.

DecisionDx-Melanoma uses genetic testing of a patient’s melanoma tissue to divide the melanoma into a “Class 1” (good) or a “Class 2” (bad) result. According to summary data, for a patient with a low risk Class 1 result, the chance of the tumor spreading within 5 years is approximately 3%. For a patient with a high risk Class 2 result, the chance of a tumor spreading with 5 years is approximately 69%. This is a startlingly stark dichotomy.

For metastatic melanomas, the longawaited age of personalized or targeted therapies has begun to arrive. In years past, “chemotherapy” meant taking medicines that are not very good at sorting out good cells from bad cells. Traditional chemotherapy involves medicines that usually work by killing cells that are growing quickly. Cancer usually grows quickly, so chemotherapy affects cancer. But some of our own tissues constantly grow and turn over. Our hair and our bowel cells are constantly being replaced and growing quickly, so chemotherapy results in the expected baldness and gastrointestinal side-effects.

New chemotherapies are finally targeting the bad cells and sparing more of the good. For example, patients whose melanomas have a specific mutation in a gene called “BRAF” have available to them drugs such as Vemurafenib,

which specifically acts on a specific gene that is often mutated in melanoma. Likewise, medications such as Nivolumab stimulate a person’s own immune system to fight a cancer.

The way that drugs like Nivolumab work makes TAYLOR them better categorized as immunotherapy than chemotherapy. It is the dawning of a new age.

And we are already into phase 2 of this new age. In phase 1, the very first immunotherapy drugs such as ipilimumab were stimulating people’s immune systems to fight cancer, but they were also causing a lot of side-effects.

Anyone who has had the flu knows what it is like to have an overactive immune system, and ipilimumab sometimes triggered reactions similar to autoimmune disease – a condition in which one’s immune system attacks one’s own body.

This might sound like we are back to square one. Ipilimumab shares features in common with the old chemotherapy since they both seem to attack good cells as well as bad. But the good news is we may be on to a second generation of immunotherapy-like chemotherapeutics.

Nivolumab is a medicine that is a close cousin to Ipilimumab. Both stimulate the immune system to fight cancer. Recent studies including one just published in late 2017 in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated that, in stage III and IV melanoma patients Nivolumab resulted in a 12-month rate of recurrence-free survival of 70.5% whereas ipilimumab only resulted in 60.8%. More importantly, only 9.7% of patients taking nivolumab discontinued due to side effects (adverse events) whereas 42.6% of patients taking ipilimumab discontinued due to adverse events. We may not just be at the doorstep of targeted therapies. We may already be on the second step.

Additional exciting advances are taking place, but the most important point about melanoma is that the best chance to cure melanoma is when a melanoma is caught small. Tips for coping with depression while traveling (NAPSI)—According to a recent University of Phoenix® survey, 39 percent of respondents say they have personally experienced depression. With the holiday travel season under way, University of Phoenix social sciences program chairs Mary Jo Trombley, Ph.D., N.C.C., and DeAnna Henderson, Ph.D., L.P.C., N.C.C., say that living with chronic or situational depression can be challenging to handle, and travel can add additional burdens.

What Is Depression?

The American Psychological Association defines depression as a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. The association lists common symptoms of depression as including feelings of sadness or depression, change in sleep patterns and eating habits, loss of energy, feelings of fatigue, loss of interest in activities, and the inability to think, concentrate or make decisions.

According to Dr. Trombley, these symptoms can become exacerbated when traveling. She states that traveling should not be seen as a cure for depression.

It can be a way to obtain temporary relief but worry, stress, pressure and loneliness are contributing factors to depression and are often present for travelers.

“Traveling comes with changes in routine, pressures of time commitments, and changes in eating, sleeping and exercising patterns,” Dr. Henderson added. “These changes can trigger a sense of not being in control and increase the sense of depression.”

Tips for Traveling with Depression Depression can be challenging. Drs. Trombley and

Henderson provide the following strategies to help individuals cope when traveling.

Plan ahead: For someone who may be struggling with depression, it is best to plan for travel as opposed to making an impulsive trip. Plan as much of the trip as possible. Know your route and possible delays, and have snacks in case you are delayed. Build in enough time to travel through airports and security check-points if flying to your destination.

Practice self-management: Self-management is the ability to manage your personal reactions to responsibilities and challenges in work and life. This becomes critical during times of adapting to changing situations. Recognizing triggers and your body’s response to unfamiliar and stressful situations can help keep depressive symptoms at bay.

Use appropriate coping strategies: Techniques that help people manage stressful and/or traumatic situations are coping strategies. These strategies can include the use of mindfulness, guided imagery, deep breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation. Additionally, reaching out to support systems during this time can diminish feelings of loneliness during travel. Finally, the use of humor can be effective in reducing stress.

Get a sufficient amount of sleep, exercise, and eat well: Travel can be exhausting. It is important to maintain patterns of sleep and healthy eating while traveling. Moreover, the maintenance of an exercise routine can also help reduce stress and release endorphins while traveling. It is also important to limit alcohol consumption as alcohol is a depressant and may exacerbate depressive symptoms.

Be realistic about your travel plans: Recognize that even though you have planned your travel, unplanned situations can occur. Maintaining a flexible stance can reduce the amount of stress experienced if travel does not go as planned. Also, while travel may alleviate some depressive symptoms, do not be alarmed if your symptoms return once the travel has ended.

North Fulton community to benefit from pain management options

WellStar North Fulton Hospital’s Pain & Spine Center has expanded to offer new services and create a convenient atmosphere for patients and their families.

Pain management has received significant attention lately with the growing opioid crisis. Currently, more than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Many patients treat it with opioids, but this type of treatment can lead to higher risk for addiction, depression and overdose among others.

WellStar Health System and North Fulton Hospital are creating innovative solutions and giving patients more options when it comes to pain management.

“Communities around the country are grappling with the opioid crisis,” said Jon-Paul Croom, president of WellStar North Fulton Hospital. “We are on the forefront of finding pain management solutions for our patients and giving them options, which for many patients, may allow them to be pain free without opioids.”

Five myths and facts about cholesterol (NAPSI)—High cholesterol is a known risk factor for heart disease and stroke and is estimated to cause nearly 2.6 million deaths annually. Yet, a survey from the American Heart Association shows that nearly two-thirds of people who have high cholesterol don’t think they’re at high risk for a heart attack or stroke.

“My Cholesterol Guide” is a new, online tool that provides information, practical tips and downloadable resources to help the more than 94.6 million Americans living with high cholesterol. The guide is the latest offering from the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke.

What it is Cholesterol is a waxy, fatlike substance found in all cells of the body.

Elevated levels of blood cholesterol can create blockages in the arteries and is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke.

“People with high cholesterol usually don’t have symptoms, so unless you get tested, you may not realize you need treatment,” said Ann Marie Navar, M.D., Ph.D., a volunteer member of the Association’s Cholesterol Advisory Committee and an Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, N.C. “Even though we have a lot of evidence about the benefits and safety of cholesterol-lowering treatment, the challenge is that cholesterol remains underdiagnosed and subsequently undertreated.”

What to do The best way to manage high cholesterol is a multipronged approach, including diet, exercise and medication if cholesterol levels remain elevated, she said.

The challenge is that many people don’t recognize their risk due to some of the following misconceptions about cholesterol.

Myths and Facts Myth 1--High cholesterol isn’t a concern for children.

High cholesterol can be hereditary.

Familial hypercholesterolemia is a genetic disorder that can cause early heart disease. If someone is diagnosed with extremely high cholesterol or fa-

milial hypercholesterolemia, it’s important that all family members get tested, including young adults and children, so that treatment isn’t delayed, Navar said.

Myth 2--You don’t need a cholesterol check until you’re middle-aged.

Getting your cholesterol checked starting at age 20 and talking with your health provider to ensure you understand what it means is crucial because getting treated early can play an important role in reducing the risk of heart disease.

“For every decade your cholesterol is high in your 30s and 40s, you increase your risk for heart disease by more than 30 percent,” Navar said.

Myth 3--Thin people don’t have high cholesterol.

Overweight people are more likely to have high cholesterol, but even people who maintain a healthy weight and regular exercise can have high cholesterol.

“Since genetics does play such an important role, some people may be doing everything right and still have high cholesterol,” she said.

Myth 4--If the nutrition label shows no cholesterol, a food is “heart healthy.”

Nutrition labels can be helpful, but you should read beyond the amount of cholesterol a food contains.

“It’s important to look for saturated fats, trans fats and added sugars because these all affect our heart health and cholesterol levels,” Navar said.

Myth 5--Only people with “high” cholesterol need medicine to lower their cholesterol.

“Even people whose cholesterol falls within what we would call ‘normal’ range can benefit from having cholesterol-lowering medication if they have other risks for heart disease or stroke,” Navar said. “Beyond just your cholesterol numbers, knowing your overall risk of heart disease can help determine if you need to be on treatment.”

Orthodontic treatment today is about faces not just braces. Consequently, facial esthetics dictates the proper timing for treatment. While treatment can contribute to the physical and psychological development of patients young and old, some patients require early intervention to obtain the best overall result for the patient. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial visit to an orthodontist at age 7 for this reason. Most patients do not need early treatment, but if necessary, amazing improvements in facial esthetics and function can be accomplished at an early age.

The common orthodontic problems that can be treated between 7 and 9 years old include underbites and severe overbites as well as crossbites and openbites . These conditions are considered muscular-skeletal problems and are best addressed in the mixed dentition when the permanent front teeth have erupted but the patient still has 12 primary teeth. These treatments are referred to as dentofacial orthopedics because we are working with the bones of the face and not just the teeth.

While some patients benefit from early intervention, the majority of patients benefit from a single treatment during adolescence, as the last few primary teeth are lost and the second molars erupt. The exact age varies, but most patients are treated during the middle school years and can be completed by high school. Of course, sometimes the teeth are slow to erupt and this can delay the completion of treatment. For this reason, starting treatment too early can prolong treatment duration and result in orthodontic burnout for the patients. Patient cooperation is important in keeping the treatments short in duration and efficient. Interestingly, girls’ teeth erupt earlier than boys of the same age.

Teenagers are in a rapid growth phase at this time. As a result, dramatic results can be achieved with improved facial esthetics and function. For example, the smile can be made wider, the lower jaw can be advanced, or a gummy smile can be eliminated. A smile analysis dictates in what direction the teeth and jaws should be moved. These changes can be life altering for some patients during the teen years.

Of course, adults want to look good too, and orthodontic treatment for adults is more popular than ever!

Invisalign, clear braces, and improvements in surgical techniques make having a fantastic smile easier too! The bulky braces and heavy forces of yesteryear are a thing of the past.

Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that move the teeth. Each aligner moves the teeth a quarter of a millimeter and is worn for one week. The number of aligners is dictated by how crowded or spaced out your teeth are at the beginning.

Clear or ceramic braces combined with new superelastic memory wires have made traditional orthodontic treatment more efficient and more comfortable. The teeth move a little every day and the forces on the teeth are very light.

For more dramatic changes, orthognathic surgery can totally transform ones appearance if necessary. Adults who desire improved facial esthetics can benefit from orthodontics combined with surgery to correct facial imbalances. In this situation, the braces are placed on the teeth for about six months prior to surgery and remain on the teeth for a few months after the procedure.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

By Jonathan Stegall, MD While the health of our lower digestive tract isn’t the most pleasant topic for dinner conversation, it is something to which we should pay close attention.

March is colorectal cancer awareness month, so now is as good a time as any to talk about it.

Most people think that getting a colonoscopy starting at age 50, and typically occurring every 10 years after that, is all that is necessary for prevention or early detection of colorectal

cancer. While colonoscopies are essential, there are some other factors to consider.

Did you know that colorectal cancer does not typically cause any symptoms until it has already spread well beyond the digestive sysSTEGALL tem? However, when it does, it typically results in changes in the frequency of bowel movements, the color of bowel movements, and the

consistency of bowel movements.

We know that several factors predispose to colorectal cancer, including family history, smoking, and a diet low in fiber. In order to reduce your chances of developing colorectal cancer, avoid smoking and increase the fiber content of your diet. A high-quality probiotic seems to be helpful as well.

And finally, if you have a parent or sibling who had colorectal cancer, be sure to mention this to your doctor so that the proper surveillance strategies can be implemented.

How older adults can combat loneliness and social isolation through exercise (NAPSI)—When discussing health, people typically think of physical health-their weight, strength, mobility, and potential health issues they are facing. Numerous studies have found a direct link between gum disease and heart disease – the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the studies, patients with gum disease are twice as likely to have heart disease. Shocking, right? Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Here’s why.

When you think about it, your mouth is like a portal to the rest of the body. We know that what you eat and drink plays a large role in your overall health, so it makes sense that if you have a chronic infection (gum disease), your body will respond accordingly.

Gum disease results when hardened tartar builds up below the gumline, releasing toxins that break down gum and bone tissue. Most people (3 out of 4) have some form of gum disease, and although there’s no cure once it reaches an advanced stage, it can be controlled.

A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALPHARETTA, GEORGIA AUTHORIZING THE EXPENDITURE OF BOND FUNDS FOR PURPOSES OTHER THAN THAT STATED IN PUBLIC BOND NOTICE AND BROCHURES – TRANSPORTATION AND ROAD IMPROVEMENTS WHEREAS, on or about May 24, 2016, the qualified voters of the City authorized the issuance of the City’s general obligation public improvement bonds in an amount not to exceed $52,500,000.00, which bonds were subsequently issued on July 28, 2016 (the “Series 2016 Bonds”); and WHEREAS, the Series 2016 Bonds included $27,600,000.00 in general obligation public transportation and road improvement bonds, which included a number of projects (the “Transportation and Road Improvement Bonds”); and WHEREAS, pursuant to O.C.G.A. 36-82-4.2, the Mayor and Council have not previously authorized certain amendments and transfers of Transportation and Road Improvement Bond funds; WHEREAS, pursuant to O.C.G.A. 36-82-4.2, the Mayor and Council have determined that circumstances have changed such that expending a portion of the Transportation and Road Improvement Bond funds for the Lilly Garden Terrace Extension project is no longer practical or feasible. The original cost estimate for the Lilly Garden Terrace Extension project was based on a concept design. Upon issuance of the Transportation and Road Improvement Bonds, a full-design was completed that, in addition to title issues, rendered the Lilly Garden Terrace Extension project no longer practical or feasible.

WHEREAS, under such circumstances, O.C.G.A. 36-82-4.2 authorizes the City to expend bond funds for purposes of a nature substantially similar to these public transportation and road improvements; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council have determined that the McGinnis Ferry Road Capacity Improvements project is substantially similar to the previously identified public transportation and road improvement; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council have determined that the completion of this public transportation and road improvement would constitute a purpose substantially similar to the purpose stated in the public notices and brochures for the Transportation and Road Improvement Bonds; NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that circumstances have changed such that a portion of the Transportation and Road Improvement Bond funds are no longer necessary to fund the Lilly Garden Terrace Extension as the project is no longer practical or feasible for the reasons previously stated.

Crabapple Middle School announces MLK Humanitarian Award winners ROSWELL, Ga. — Crabapple Middle School in Roswell has announced the winner of its Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award for 2018.

The student winner is 7th-grader Jackson Smith. Jackson worked in the community with the Little Helpers organization and has volunteered as far away as Vietnam, spreading a message of compassion and service.

The CMS staff winner is Glenn Mize, a teacher who volunteers many hours in the school’s community garden and passes on the love of gardening to students.

The community winner is Edward Klaas II. He is a committed school business partner, parent and community

volunteer who devotes his time to local projects and international missions.

An award ceremony was held in the school gym.

Guests were treated to special performances by the vocal quartet, band quintet and chamber orchestra. There was also a recitation of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech performed by members of the student council.

Student Council Representative Corey Kaseff introduced guest speaker Sandra Ervin, who delivered a message about stepping outside your “land of familiar” to achieve greatness.

This seventh annual event was organized by parent volunteers Caryn Saker and Meredith Martini-Hoban.

Northern Ridge District announces new Eagle Scouts NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Northern Ridge Boy Scout District, which includes the cities of Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton, recently announced its newest Eagle Scouts.

These are Scouts who passed their Eagle Board of Reviews, held at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, on Feb. 22: Venkata Puttaguntam, of Troop 2000, was sponsored by Johns Creek Presbyterian Church. His project was the collection of 1,414 books to be shipped to libraries in Africa.

Benjamin Walker, of Troop 3000, was sponsored by Birmingham United Methodist Church. For his project, Walker designed and constructed of three separate horse runs for the Rising Hope Barn for Special Equestrians.

Jacob Paris, of Troop 841, was sponsored by St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He renovated two Milton High School locker rooms for the Milton High School Fencing Teams. This included cleaning, repainting, installing lockers, clothes racks and blade racks.

Richard Losh, of Troop 985, was sponsored by Northbrook United Methodist Church. His project was the refurbishing of the Northbrook House, located at Northbrook United Methodist Church, deck by removing and replacing all the hand railings.

Matthew Gilbert, of Troop 429, was sponsored by Alpharetta Presbyterian Church. For his project, Gilbert designed and constructed a book exchange library as well as stocking

Nicholas Glotzbach, of Troop 226, was sponsored by Bridge to Grace Church, and his project was the design, construction and placement of three benches and five trash receptacles for the Old Roswell Cemetery.

Rounak Chowdhury, of Troop 3143, was sponsored by Johns Creek United Methodist Church. His project was the design and construction of a fence with wire mesh for the main

garden at Autrey Mill Nature Park and Heritage Center.

Grant Garris, of Troop 2000, was sponsored by Johns Creek Presbyterian Church. His project was the organization of a book collection for the Santa Breakfast at Mimosa Elementary School. Garris also collected over 1,765 books so that every student would receive 1-2 books, gift wrapped from Santa Claus.
