murder and was transported to the Forsyth County Detention Center. He is being held without bond. At 6:24 p.m., deputies were called to the Wyndham Park subdivision in southeast Forsyth County to investigate a DUAN man who was reportedly being confrontational with residents while walking in the neighborhood.

Deputies encountered the man on Gallatin Way and saw what appeared to be blood on his clothing. Duan reportedly refused to comply with orders to stand still.

Deputies identified the home where Duan lives and, due to the circumstances, searched the residence. They then located a deceased female.

According to the sheriff’s office, this appears to be a domestic-related death between an estranged married couple who are not currently living together.

Driver throws rocks at cars on Ga. 400 FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A woman reported another driver was throwing rocks out the window while driving on Ga. 400.

The 26-year-old woman said she was driving southbound at Jot Em Down Road March 5 when the Jeep in front of her threw rocks at her car.

A deputy was able to stop the Jeep’s 18-year-old driver who said he thought the rocks could be dislodging from the Jeep’s large mud tires.

However the victim and her passenger said they saw the person throwing the rocks out by hand.

What are the Differences Between LASIK and PRK?

Laser vision correction or refractive surgery gives individuals the opportunity to reduce their dependency on glasses or contact lenses. The two primary types of refractive surgeries offered are LASIK and PRK. LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is the most commonly performed refractive surgery with over 700,000 procedures done in 2014 by surgeons in the US.

In LASIK, a thin flap is initially created on the cornea using a microkeratome blade, or more recently a femtosecond laser. This flap is then lifted, and an excimer laser is employed to reshape the underlying corneal bed according to the patient’s prescription, or refractive error. Once this has been performed, the flap is laid back into its original position as the last step. The procedure is usually done for both eyes in about 15 minutes.

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is an alternative procedure and actually the predecessor to LASIK. As opposed to the creation of a flap, the top layer of the cornea called the epithelium is removed carefully. The same excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea.

After this, a contact lens is placed on the eye as a bandage to allow the surface of the eye to heal. Similar to LASIK, the procedure is complete in about 15 minutes.

The final visual results with both LASIK and PRK are very comparable.

The biggest difference lies in the recovery period. Recovery after LASIK is fairly quick – most patients feel minimal discomfort and can see well within a few days of the procedure. With PRK, patients usually experience mild to moderate discomfort as the surface epithelial cells heal in over the first 3-5 days. Visual recovery is gradual, with the final outcome achieved over a few weeks. Most patients undergoing PRK take some days off from school or work, whereas LASIK patients usually resume their daily activities within the next day or so.

So why choose PRK? Some individuals have thin corneas or unusual corneal shapes that precludes them for being suitable candidates for LASIK. In these individuals, PRK is the safer alternative with similar outcomes. Additionally, there is no risk for any flap-related complications with PRK. All patients undergoing refractive surgery will experience temporary dry eye symptoms; however, these symptoms tend to be less severe with PRK.

In rare instances, patients with extreme nearsightedness or high myopia are not candidates for either LASIK or PRK. For these individuals, phakic intraocular lenses, or IOLs, is a safer alternative. These implantable lenses are placed within the eye – either between the cornea and iris or behind the iris. While the procedure is more invasive and expensive, phakic IOL surgery can produce very good results for patients.

The Atlanta Coyote Project said its members strongly reject the “wildlife-killing contest as both inhumane and unwise. For a state agency whose mission is to ‘sustain, enhance, protect and conserve Georgia’s natural, historic and cultural resources’ to sponsor such a program is reprehensible.”

Mowry added that the Georgia DNR contradicts itself with a quote from its coyote fact sheet that said, “The presence of coyotes in an ecosystem ‘proves to be an asset in maintaining the balance of wildlife in Georgia.’”

But the department has said the challenge is consistent with and supported by the Department Of Natural Resources and the Wildlife Resources Division’s missions, with which Killmaster agrees.

“Yes, coyotes serve some ecological function,” he said. “But our goal is to remind people they have the ability to manage coyotes. This is not a measure to eradicate coyotes in the state. It’s far from that. Any sort of contest or bounty programs are not conducive to eradication.”

Killmaster said the DNR has received a lot of complaints, both by those against the challenge but also by people who’ve had pets taken by coyotes or hunters concerned about the impact of coyotes on native wildlife.

Despite the criticism, Killmaster said he thinks the challenge has already been successful.

“This is an effort to remind people that coyotes can be taken 365 days a year,” he said. “If they have problems with coyotes then they have that tool to address those issues. I think this will be a success.”

But Mowry thinks the reminder to hunters is a weak justification for the challenge. He said predators, like coyotes, will limit their own numbers so humans don’t need to interfere.

“So what? I don’t agree with that anyway but to compound that by incentivizing the practice by offering a reward is wrong,” he said. “Many states are working to ban these ‘killing contests’ because it’s like cock fighting, which we don’t do anymore. This sends the message to people that you should go out and kill as many as you can. This is a black eye for our state that we’re going to encourage this kind of a thing.”

Norman’s Landing announces closing in June Restaurant raised $2.3 million for charities

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — After being one of the first restaurants to call Forsyth County home right before its population exploded, Norman’s Landing will soon be shutting its doors and selling the property.

Bill Norman announced March 13 that after 22 years the longstanding seafood restaurant at 365 Peachtree Parkway will be closing June 18, according to owner Bill Norman.

However, debt and maintenance issues are driving him to shutter the doors.

“It would take $400,000 to get this restaurant back in the right direction,” Norman said. “I’m talking about new floors and tile. I can’t take another payment book. I owe friends, family, banks and everybody. I have to get them off me so I can sleep at night.”

He said he has “signed papers” for the property and it’s a great deal, but he wouldn’t say to who, for what and how much.

“I need to go forward,” Norman said.

“I probably won’t call this my retirement as I’ll probably open up a barbeque dump in six months or a year.

There just ain’t no telling. I love spoiling people.”

Now the entrepreneur said he’s on an emotional rollercoaster regarding the bittersweet closing.

“I don’t know what to feel,” Norman said. “It’s going to be like this for 100 days.”

nearly 50 years ago when he helped found Longhorn Steakhouse. He eventually set out to fulfill his dream of building a restaurant on Lake Lanier and opened Norman’s Landing in 1995.

“My parents had a house at Lake Lanier so we drove by this property all the time,” Norman said. “I thought, since this is at the end of Peachtree and Ga. 400, it’ll be a great location. People told me I was crazy and this was out in the middle of nowhere. I’ve heard that my whole life. But I said we’re building it, we’re going to do it for the community.”

Along with providing his menu comprised of mostly seafood, he has made a name in the community as someone who loves to give back.

“The reason I built this restaurant is to have the best food in Forsyth County and to raise money in this community,” Norman said. “I left Longhorn and had a bunch of money and thought, ‘I’ll do something for the community.’ We will end up raising $2.3 million for this community in 22 years. Hopefully we’ve been the best restaurant in Forsyth County in 22 years. That was the goal. We take pride in what we do.”

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Riverwatch Middle School seventh grader Lauren Burgess didn’t mind spending a Tuesday morning sorting school supplies.

“We came from our school to help people less fortunate than us,” she said. “We know that we are very fortunate to live in Forsyth County and be able to come and help out.”

She and her peers traveled March 7 to the Foster Care Support Foundation in Roswell as part of the school’s Panther Pay it Forward day. Students were dispatched to 23 locations, including the Humane Society of Forsyth County, Forsyth County Parks and Recreation and United Way. At this location, Burgess and the rest of the students from the seventh grade English language arts class taught by Leslie Storm helped the group sort schools supplies, clothing and games for future customers.

“Having this experience outside of school will be so beneficial to the students,” Storm said. “This will open their eyes to things they didn’t realize. Our community gives a lot to the schools so this is our way of giving back to them.”

The foundation takes more than 6,000 volunteers a year, including groups like these students, according to Executive Director Rachel Ewald.

The foundation is preparing to distribute school supplies to more than 2,000

kids before summer so the students won’t have to worry about finding materials during the break.

“This teaches the students how to give back to people less fortunate than them,” Ewald said. “Although we do live in a bubble, there’s a way to reach outside of it and make a difference.”

The foundation doesn’t get a penny of government funds and relies on community and volunteer support, she said. They’d like to serve up to 10,000 kids a year but can’t on their current budget.

“Kids are resilient, but they remember (what happens in foster care),” Ewald said. “We need the community to help and maybe we’ll make a difference.

It is kids helping kids, people helping people. The community might not be able to help, so we give them a way.

Not everyone can be a foster parent but everyone can help a foster child.”

And after all the sorting, cleaning and helping were complete, Burgess said she and her peers did in fact learn the expected lesson.

“We shouldn’t take for granted what we have. We get to wake up, take a shower, put on clean clothes and go to school and not get made fun of for what we’re wearing,” she said. “People less fortunate than us don’t get to do that.”

Coyotes don’t belong in Georgia I wrote my first news article about coyotes in North Fulton around 20 years ago. They were news then.

What they did not enjoy was losing their cats and other pets to coyotes. It made them uncomfortable for their small children to play outside alone. That was the news: Coyotes are in the suburbs.

It is not much news now. But what is news is the apparent brazenness of the beasts that have become so comfortable in the area. Some coyotes have taken up residence in neighborhoods themselves. That is disquieting. As they lose their fear of humans, they can become something more than a nuisance.

They resemble dogs and are often mistaken for dogs, at least at a distance. And as they lose their fear of humans, they become a possible threat

to children. I haven’t written a story about a coyote attack on a child yet, and I don’t want to.

Like all wild animals, coyotes are susceptible to rabies. And a rabid coyote, like the rabid dog or raccoon, is a threat to public health.

Coyotes are not native to Georgia.

That is why there is no hunting season for coyotes. They can be taken at any time.

Why did they migrate here? The main reason is there are no wolves in the Southeast anymore. Wolves saw coyotes as competitors and a wolf pack is rather discouraging to coyotes, which are mostly solitary creatures.

Coyote populations are growing all over the United States. The wolves are gone, and with them, nature’s check on coyote population. Now coyotes have settled into the Southeast.

They are back because they chiefly live off rodents, and in checking those populations, they perform a service.

But coyotes are adept at finding their niche in our society, so they will continue to multiply and expand their range among humans if left unchecked.

Now the Georgia Department of Nat-

ural Resources’ Division of Wildlife has deemed the coyote presence a nuisance and has offered a bounty program to hunters. It is in the form of a lottery for a lifetime hunting license. Your ticket is a dead coyote.

This sounds barbarous and cruel, but that is how nature operates. Predation is nature’s way of maintaining balance.

These coyotes feast mostly on rabbits, squirrels and mice but they also take small deer. And in addition to pets, they take domestic animals including chickens, goats, lambs and even calves.

There was one member of the General Assembly I saw who suggested a $1,000 bounty for a coyote. That’s ridiculous. I don’t want to see hunters from all over the Southeast bringing in their dead coyotes at a grand a pop.

I think that was just a sop to hunters. I sure don’t want to see less than able hunters prowling the national parks or neighborhoods trying to bag enough coyotes to buy a new F-150.

And I sure don’t want taxpayers paying for it.

But thinning them out and making coyotes more shy of humans and the places where humans congregate

makes sense.

The reality is the DNR allows thinning of most critters that threaten to upset the ecological balance. Hunters do the job quite well. Even with deer hunting season each year, it still becomes necessary sometimes to thin deer herds (harvest is the euphemism) when the populations outstrip the land’s ability to support them.

It keeps those populations healthier and more stable.

While it may seem cruel to hunt these animals, it is with a purpose.

There is no “nice” way to deal with such nuisances. And we want the DNR to deal with such issues before they become larger problems.

And Mr. Whiskers will thank you for it.

Coyote ugly: Long live the coyote If you haven’t heard yet, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is hosting a Coyote Challenge to lighten the breed’s population, thinning the herd, so to speak.

Hunters are KATHLEEN STURGEON tasked with killing Editor kathleen@appenmediagroup.com up to five of the animals each month and, in return, will be entered into a raffle where they may receive a free hunting license for a lifetime.

I feel like this is a plot to a B-list movie that will inevitably go horribly wrong, or that we aren’t currently living in the year 2017, but perhaps 1917 or even 1817.

No, the fact is we are living in 2017 in good old Georgia and seem to be trying our best to live up to the Southern stereotypes.

This killing contest is just plain barbaric. This seems like a way to control an animal populace prior to our modern technology and efforts. It’s like we’re regressing back to our uneducated, ignorant ways.

I understand it’s believed that we need to lessen the coyote population.

That’s one of the reasons the agency is holding the contest. And sure, it’s never a good thing when a coyote wanders into a neighborhood and eats, kills or injures a family pet.

But let’s back up a bit. That same department said coyotes are in fact an asset in maintaining the balance of wildlife in the state, according to the Atlanta Coyote Project, a group of scientists devoted to learning about the animal.

I grew up in a neighborhood that backed up to a creek and was surrounded by a natural buffer of trees.

My elementary school was not even half a mile away. We heard or saw coyotes all the time including daytime sightings on the playground that forced us to skip outdoor recess. As much as I played outside as a child, I never felt threatened by the animals.

Today we may be seeing coyotes more in our neighborhoods and on our roads. That’s probably due to us demolishing their natural habitats to build our own homes and places to shop and eat. It’s no wonder they’re encroaching in our space. That’s exactly what we did

... If we continue to kill these animals, their former territory won’t go unclaimed.

Instead, a new coyote will move in as they’ll believe more food is available. to them, and they don’t know where to go.

Surely we can learn how to peacefully coexist without resorting to murdering as many living animals as we can. This contest seems to be fighting fire with fire, which usually doesn’t have a happy ending.

According to the Atlanta Coyote Project, if we continue to kill these animals, their former territory won’t go unclaimed. Instead, a new coyote will move in, as they’ll believe more food is available. This will inevitably lead to more coyote pups. And more pups

leads to the exact opposite outcome of what the Department of Natural Resources is expecting.

Instead of fewer coyotes, we’ll probably end up with more than when we started. The Humane Society of the United States backs this by saying if you shoot or poison coyotes, you’ll have just as many again within a year or two.

When you start to mess with nature, there always seem to be unintended consequences. Man does not always know best when dealing with wild animals.

We need to keep our pets and children indoors at nighttime and during coyote mating season and figure out a way to live with our furry neighbors who more than likely aren’t going away, no matter what brutal method we nauseatingly, happily take part in.

Surely we have evolved enough to know an eye for an eye just leaves everyone blind?

Commissioners discuss transportation blueprint Plan looks forward up to 2040

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — In an effort to ease the traffic headache through Forsyth County, the Board of Commissioners plans to update its comprehensive transportation plan. Michael Kray, consultant team project manager for Jacobs Engineering, recently gave an update on the county’s plan.

“We want to have a plan that’ll be implemented,” Kray said. “In a review of the previous comprehensive transportation plan, the county’s engineering staff has done a great job getting the projects funded and off the ground. In my experience working with other counties around Georgia, Forsyth County does an excellent job of taking something from a plan and putting in on the ground.”

Since the previous plan was adopted, 76 percent of short-range county transportation projects and 90 percent of intersection improvements have been funded. The funding sources

come from a variety of areas including SPLOST, state funding, federal funding and bonds. Kray said he uses Forsyth as an example to other cities and counties of how to use a bond to leverage state and federal funds to get projects done.

“That is an extraordinary number (for short-range project funding). In fact, the other 24 percent that isn’t funded is on state routes, and that funding comes from other entities. So all the short-range county roads have been funded here,” Kray said. “This is a great implementation rate. The goal we have for this planning document is to have good planning projects that can be taken and implemented through other funding sources like SPLOST.” Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills asked Kray if the county anticipates the growth and how that will impact transportation projects.

“We have a couple different projections on populations and use the regional travel model that provides projections through the year 2040,” Kray said. “We are taking that into account.”

Mills asked if the 20-year plan is too broad for the county because it grows so quickly.

Also at the meeting, commissioners: • Approved two additional deputy coroners.

• Approved holding a special called meeting at 1 p.m. prior to the first commissioners work session, which will serve as a zoning workshop. Planning Commission members may attend too, but this is primarily for the Board of Commissioners. Additionally, the board approved the BOC members would attend Planning Commission meetings only in their capacity as citizens and would only participate as a citizen unless the Planning Commission meeting is advertised as a joint meeting of the Planning Commission/Board of Commissioners or if they are asked questions by the Planning Commission.

• Approved a study for growth patterns and projections regarding the senior population in Forsyth County.

• Voted to proceed with demolition of Barker House and place a memorial at the site.

“When the project list and action lists come out, they will be separated into different time windows, including a short-term, midterm and long-term plan,” Kray said. “That short-term plan has the projects that are expected to be done within five years. After that time, there’ll be another planning process.

Twenty years is a long time, but we will definitely focus on the short-term as much as the long-term.”

The planning process, which began in January, takes about a year. Kray said he hopes to finish by December

2017. Currently, staff is collecting data and reviewing it, garnering stakeholder and public input and establishing baseline conditions.

The next phase is the assessment of needs where the team will analyze the road congestion, safety and accessibility. After that, the projects will be identified and prioritized along with implementation and the creation of a funding strategy.

Demographics will be taken into consideration as will the condition of the roads and how often they are used.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Christine Ward will soon be sailing away thanks to the annual Appen Cruise Giveaway.

Readers, including Ward, found the logo and entered to win on northfulton. com by describing exactly where the logo was found that week. Then in early March, Ward’s name was chosen out of more than 2,900 entries, double the amount from last year.

“I was flipping through the pages and saw the winner from last year. I thought, ‘that’s a fun contest,’” she said. “I never really win anything, but this is a great opportunity.”

In fact, her family thought the email letting her know she won was a hoax at first. But she recognized last year’s winner and knew it was real.

“I sent it to my family and their response was, ‘are you sure this is legitimate?’” she said. “I knew it was legitimate, and the whole family was excited.”

Ward said she’s taking her husband, son and daughter on the trip. She will receive $2,000 that will be applied toward the cruise vacation of their choice, courtesy of Expedia CruiseShipCenters in Alpharetta.

Ward, who is the special events manager for the City of Roswell, said she’s been on three cruises before and loves them, but she isn’t sure where she wants to go now.

“We are open to where we go. We want to sit down and see what’s available,” Ward said. “We are open to what-

ever works out and interests us.”

Alpharetta Expedia franchise owner Vince Bonfanti will help Ward figure everything out.

“This is great fun to see how excited they are and how much they will enjoy it,” he said. “One of the things we like about our jobs is getting to help plan people’s vacations. We get to share in the fun.”

The location is entering its sixth year of business and third year doing the cruise giveaway. There are now 40 consultants who work from the Alpharetta center. The location helped plan over 1,200 vacations for customers in 2016 and has already planned more than 300 for 2017.

“We are growing because people are starting to become aware of the value of booking with us,” Bonfanti said. “That value really is that we are experts, as we cruise a lot and have been on the ships and gone to the destinations. We give people expert advice and it doesn’t cost anything.”

In addition to advice, clients don’t pay more than they would if they booked online, he said. The agency also has discounts on thousands of staterooms, sometimes up to 60 percent less.

There are four Expedia CruiseShipCenters in metro Atlanta: Alpharetta, Roswell, Sugar Hill and Lawrenceville.

The company expects to have 40 locations in Canada and the United States in 2017 and up to 500 locations in the next five years.

Haw Creek celebrates exceptional children Interactive gallery teaches students about each other

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — There are some exceptional children in Forsyth County. That’s why Haw Creek Elementary School wanted to celebrate them March 6-10.

The school set up an interactive gallery to help students learn about their classmates, disabilities and how to embrace diversity.

Special Education Department chairperson Heather Goukler said this is a national celebration which has taken place for four years at Haw Creek.

“It gives everyone a moment to

pause and think about how we are all the same and different,” Goukler said.

“Especially in large school systems and schools like Haw Creek, it gives us time to find our similarities with our friends and find ways we can connect.”

Principal June Tribble said it gives students a better understanding of their peers, which is often taught by the teachers.

“Kids understand it more,” Tribble said. “Not only are our kids exceptional, our teachers are exceptional, too.”

Tribble said the students participate on the morning news show which enlightens other students.

“Students are learning about exceptionalities and what that means,” Tribble said. “Students have gone home and have told their parents, ‘everybody is different.’ The kids are recognizing that we are all people. They embrace it all and have a chance to express their uniqueness.”

Forsyth Teacher of the Year crowned North Forsyth Middle teacher wins award

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — North Forsyth Middle School teacher Maleah Stewart walked into the Forsyth County Schools Celebration of Excellence not expecting to leave a winner.

However, she was pleasantly surprised March 10 when her name was called as the 2017 Teacher of the Year.

“I did not think I was going to be here, honestly,” Stewart said. “My daytime family is my kids, teachers, administrators and community parents.

I am surrounded by the most amazing educators, so to be chosen is breathtaking.”

Stewart came to Forsyth County in 2006 and is in her 17th year of being a special education teacher. She became a speech language pathologist because of her personal experience growing up with a family member who had social anxiety and deficits in communication.

She talked about her childhood and how she was a quiet student who made good grades and never got in trouble.

Stewart kept her brother a secret to her peers as her brother was always in trouble.

“We all have those students who stand out in our minds, who change our minds and who we’ll never forget,” Stewart said. “I know how essential it is to build relationships with kids.

It’s what I strive to do every day as an education. My brother taught me everything about being an educator and how it all comes down to relationships.”

She encouraged her fellow teachers to get to know their students including the kids who act out but especially the ones who don’t.

“I believe really getting to know our kids is our No. 1 job as educators,” Stewart said. “I know I am not all that special. But I had some teachers who taught me the joys and the importance of establishing relationships with others. I stand here before you right now only because of those relationships.”

From training sessions for parents to working with teachers on innovative lessons, Stewart has been able to find creative ways to help every student communicate, regardless of disability, said School Board Chairperson Kristin Morrissey.

“Since joining the FCS family in 2006, Maleah has demonstrated her passion for making connections by growing strong relationships with not only her students, but also with

“I am more than just their teacher,” Stewart said. “I am their advocate, their support, their mentor, their confidant, their cheerleader and their biggest fan.

The other finalists for 2017 were Maggie Tompkins from Shiloh Point Elementary School and AP language/ American Literature and world studies teacher Michele Dugan from Forsyth Central High School.

Every school in the county chooses a teacher of the year, and those choices are narrowed down to a group of semifinalists for district honors. From there,

a community panel picks the top three and conducts an observation before choosing the winner, according to Forsyth Superintendent Jeff Bearden.

“We have so many talented teachers in Forsyth County. We are so blessed,” Bearden said. “We have almost 3,000 teachers. So to be named Teacher of the Year at the school is a huge honor, and to reach this level in an incredible honor. But to be the Forsyth County Teacher of the Year must be a humbling experience because you know you’re surrounded by so much talent.”

Forsyth traditional high schools named in four AP honor school categories FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — All five of the Forsyth County Schools traditional high schools have received recognition in four categories for Advanced Placement Honor Schools.

AP exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT. AP courses are one of several ways Georgia students can access college-level learning at the high school level. Students who receive a 3, 4 or 5 score out of 5 on an AP exam may receive college credit.

The Georgia Department of Education began recognizing AP Honor Schools in 2008.

The categories include: AP Merit Schools: schools with at least 20 percent of the total student population taking AP exams and at least 50 percent of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher; 69 named in

Ga. DOE Title I recognizes Forsyth Schools, two elementary schools FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Education has named Forsyth County Schools as the 2016-17 Title I Large Reward District. Additionally, Chestatee ES and Midway ES as 2016-17 Title I Reward Schools.

The Reward District designation is awarded to school systems with the highest absolute performance over three years for the “all students” group on the statewide assessments, among districts of their size.

Reward Schools are Title I schools that fall into one of two categories, Highest-Performing and High-Progress. Chestatee and Midway were recognized as Highest-Performing Schools. According to the DOE, they are among the five percent of the state’s Title I schools with the absolute highest performance, over three years, for the “all students” group on the statewide assessments. A school may not be classified as a Highest-Performing School if it has been identified as a Priority or Focus School.

Recent Roswell closings leave holes for opportunity Time now to forge vision for retail-commercial Steve Stroud is executive director of Roswell Inc, that city’s public-private economic development arm. He has laid out a strategy to revitalize retail development in his city.

ROSWELL, Ga. – With the recent closings of Target, Kohl’s, Rack Room Shoes and a variety of other retailers in Roswell, we know there is growing concern over the future of retail and STEVE STROUD overall economic Executive Director Roswell Inc development in the city, with a particular concern for East Roswell.

As a longtime Roswell resident and 30-year business entrepreneur in this city, I am likewise disappointed by these recent announcements. However, I also find myself excited by the opportunity this creates for us to cast vision for what East Roswell could become in the future.

As many of you know, what is happening to retail in Roswell is not isolated to our city – it’s happening across the nation.

Retail landscape changing The demand for traditional retail is decreasing rapidly, as the market for online shopping continues to grow.

This, alongside the continued trend toward mixed-used development, has become a major game-changer.

This shift in consumer behavior has

been causing waves in the industry for several years and is set to completely transform the way retail looks 5 to 10 years from now.

It’s also caused major retailers, from Target to Macy’s to Walgreens, to completely rethink their business models.

While stores that can’t sustain a profit are closing, CEOs are brainstorming ways for their companies to adapt to the new environment and changing consumer.

People often ask me if that means traditional brick-and-mortar shops will become a thing of the past.

The overwhelming majority of industry experts say no.

However, there is a growing understanding that to remain competitive in the new retail environment, stores and shopping districts will need to offer something consumers can’t get on their phones – a shopping experience.

Consumers are increasingly desiring experience-driven shopping areas like Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market in Atlanta and the downtown areas in Woodstock and Lawrenceville. These destination retail concepts are what most industry leaders forecast as the future for non-online retail.

How does Roswell adapt?

Last month, Roswell Inc was invited to participate in two public forums about the future of economic development along the Holcomb Bridge Road Corridor.

What does that look like?

Currently, our Roswell Inc team is finalizing the details to begin a compre-

hensive retail study for Roswell. This will focus on the needs for the city as a whole as well as help us develop a plan for the distinct, unique retail needs and opportunities for each part of our community.

We are also working closely with city staff on a proposal to begin a study along Holcomb Bridge Road, east of Ga. 400.

This will help map out future redevelopment in East Roswell and identify what types of projects make sense for the community and the market. It will also work in tandem with the Ga. 9 study.

As both these projects progress, there will be opportunities for public input along the way through a number of ways: surveys, focus groups and town hall meetings for example.

Your voice is an important part of this process, and we encourage you to stay involved.

Business all too good in the ATL Making better It’s all too easy in Atlanta – and anywhere else I suppose – to get bogged down in the weeds. But if you take the time to stand up and look around, things are really good here in GEOFF SMITH the ATL. Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com I was talking to a friend of mine over the weekend. He is an integral part of an important company headquartered here in Atlanta. He told me that recruiters are calling him all the time trying to get him to take similar positions at other local companies.

He has no plans of leaving his job, but it’s a comfort for him to know that if he had to he could easily jump ship and land squarely on his feet.

The metro area added 70,800 new jobs last year, the 10th largest improvement of all the major U.S. metropolitan cities.

New corporations and talented employees are moving here every day. As a result, the metro area is undergoing a renaissance of quality development.

With new employees comes the need for new office space and new places for people to live. There is enough demand to rival what we went through back in the 1980s and 1990s – but this time, the expectations are significantly higher.

With more experienced city planners and banks requiring developers to prove the long-term economic viability of their projects, today’s developments are catapulting our quality of life.

It’s insane what is going on. In intown Atlanta, just look at fun projects like the “Beer Gardens on the Beltline,” the redevelopment of the Historic Old Fourth Ward Park and Ponce City Market.

campus and around the MARTA station there. Just east in Sandy Springs you’ll see construction of Mercedes-Benz’ new North American Headquarters, as well as the new city center.

Just south of there you’ll see the $2 billion redevelopment of the old GM plant in Doraville.

Alpharettans are seeing the second phase of Avalon finish up, the ground breaking of their new city-center and the submission of a $450 million office project on a mixed-use campus. And that’s just to name a few. I left out the Roman coliseum and the tech campus.

I ran into my friend Lamar Wakefield of Wakefield Beasley & Associates last week. I was floored to hear about all of the new suburban city centers that his firm is designing around the metro area. And these are ambitious projects where city planners are working with developers to create real downtowns with unique character, and good balances of mixed-use to create economically viable projects where residents can live, work and play.

If you stand up and look above the weeds, you won’t find this kind of development going on in other cities. We are living in great times where developers and city planners are thinking big.

That’s why it pained me to read Hatcher Hurd’s article last week about the dirty politics taking place in the

Roswell City Council election.

Roswell is teeming with opportunity, perhaps more than any other suburban city. Roswell Mayor Jere Wood worked hard over the last 20 years, leading the charge to secure more parkland than probably anywhere else in the metro area – maybe the southeast. Much of it runs along the Chattahoochee River and is preserved with walking and biking trails.

The natural amenities are huge here. Throw that in with the preserved southern mansions, the 150- year-old buildings, and Canton Street, and you have a city with a serious “It” factor.

It’s a shame that with all this beauty and growth, many people only want to see the traffic. No doubt it’s a concern, but it’s a sign of success.

And our city leaders are working hard to alleviate it. It’s been said a million different ways, but the truth is you are either growing or dying. And here in the ATL, we are surely growing and life is very good.

BlackBerry data center sold for $30M Kimball Bridge site to be used as data center

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The former site of a BlackBerry facility was purchased Feb. 24 for $30 million and will become a data center for Ascent.

Ascent, which provides comprehensive data center solutions, in partnership with TowerBrook Capital Partners, bought the 40-acre property at 4905

North Point Parkway and Kimball Bridge Road.

BlackBerry and Ascent entered into partial leasebacks for data center space at the property which will be called Ascent ATL1 Data Center. The facility is well-suited for cloud and edge deployment servers with plug and play data center space immediately available, the company said.

“The sale leaseback arrangement enables the customer to focus on its core business and provides them a partner in their data center facility operations, while at the same time

allowing Ascent to bring additional high quality, purpose-built assets to market under its growing data center portfolio,” Ascent said.

Ascent also bought a data center in Toronto along with its Alpharetta purchase due to the centers’ being equipped with “significant security characteristics, concurrently maintainable infrastructure for 100 percent uptime and other site-specific features,” the company said.

Ascent CEO Phil Horstmann said the acquisition is a complement to the company’s solutions set and its ability

to deliver quickly on complex customer data center challenges.

Horstmann said the company was reevaluating its real estate portfolio and operational needs.

The company’s staff put together an action plan that enabled it to execute the international transaction in a short period of time.

“We look forward to working with our customer and bringing these enterprise-grade facilities and their respective data center capabilities to market for additional tenants,” Horstmann said.

The morning seminar, “Digital Disruption” was intriguing. Dave Moorman, founder of Dynasis, talked about the power what he calls digital disruption.

Global examples are the internet’s impact on education. An industry-wide example is how Netflix highjacked the video rental industry from Blockbuster.

Such digital disruption can happen in local markets as well. Many said that they felt they could not afford to miss Moorman’s talk.

Is your child getting the sleep they need?

A significant amount of behavioral and learning issues in children are due to lack of sleep. Brain synapses are created during the day at a rate of 800 per second during times of cognitive stimulation. A brand new synapse is a very fragile thing immediately after creation. The brain takes care of this via a process called neuroplasticity.

During sleep, the brain concretes these connections together making them much stronger. It’s done during “slow wave sleep” in the hippocampus for vocabulary and during Stage 2 Non- REM sleep for motor skills. Any emotional/ social memory is solidified during REM sleep.

A child’s sleep is qualitatively different than adults since 40% of children’s sleep is spent in “slow wave sleep”.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Alpharetta High School sophomore Brent Miller has devised an Eagle Scout project to benefit local charities, donating excess food from home growers to help battle food insecurity for local families in need.

Dubbed “Grower’s Connection,” Miller’s project stemmed from his volunteer work with North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) during its Thanksgiving food drive.

He witnessed how much of an impact the food drive was making for local families struggling with food insecurity, and he formulated his plan to help with the same cause.

“Every year my family would have excess produce from our home garden.

I knew about the food insecurity problems in our community, so I decided that we could use that excess produce to help the food insecurity problem,” Miller said.

Miller began his project by incubating 100 vegetable plants at his family’s home. The plants will be given out for free to Grower’s Connection supporters to grow on their own property. The harvest from those plants will then go to benefit NFCC and Meals by Grace, a Forsyth County-based non-profit that provides a pantry and meals for local families in need.

The plants will be distributed at Alpharetta City Hall on April 15.

Even those who don’t receive a plant from Miller’s incubator can donate excess food grown at a home garden to the cause.

Miller and a team of volunteers will take donations from June through September.

Growers can drop off produce at the parking lots of the city halls of Alpharetta and Johns Creek or the Birmingham Village Publix parking lot every Tues- BRENT MILLER Local Boy Scout day and Friday. The volunteers will then transport the produce to NFCC and Meals by Grace.

Volunteers will be made up of the Alpharetta chapter of the Young Men’s

Alpharetta student and Boy Scout Brent Miller with vegetable plants he will giving out to locals to grow produce for charitable organizations.

Service League, Miller’s Boy Scout Troup 429, as well as students and club members from Alpharetta High School.

Miller said his project is a way to support the community and those in need, and that age is not a factor in one’s ability to help others.

“The project really means a lot to me,” he said. “I wanted to do something meaningful that would have a positive and lasting effect on the community. I feel it shows no matter how old you are you can make an impact in your community.”

Journalism under attack: Georgia

I am excited to introduce our latest Blackbox project, our first that will cover events across the entire state.

We are seeing a rapid change in the way we produce and consume news. Unfortunately, not all changes are for the better, and some have given us an entirely new set of HANS APPEN challenges.

We do not have a timetable to complete this project, and frankly I hope that we don’t. As long as I am in the business, I believe it is our duty at Appen Media Group to do our part in protecting journalism and your right to stay informed.

The first amendment after all, is first for a reason.

In next week’s editions, look for articles from Hatcher Hurd on a history of the Freedom of Information Act, and from Pat Fox on what to know about making open records requests in Georgia.

The week after that we will begin the process of documenting the state of journalism in Georgia with examples across the state of people who are influencing and being affected by an evolving news world.

Every document held in government halls is your piece of paper.

Every penny spent by government is your money.

From the courthouse to the statehouse to the White House, government belongs to the governed and not the governing.

ZACHARY You have the right to know what the governing are up to, always. We are self-governed.

The only way the public, and the press, can hold government accountable is by having unfettered access to its deliberations and the documents it holds.

Transparency is not liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat.

The media champions open government in its traditional role as the Fourth Estate, knowing that independent checks and balances are critical to our liberty.

When city council, county commission or the board of education brokers a deal behind closed doors and conceals documents containing important information the public wants and needs to know our freedoms are compromised.

Local government has the biggest impact in our lives on a day-to-day basis.

Whether it is in the form of property taxes, sales taxes, business taxes, state-shared dollars or federal grants, loans and funding, local government is 100 percent taxpayer funded. The decisions being made, the monies being spent and the records being kept by city hall, the county commission, the board of education or the hospital authority affect us all, and when

Elected officials — from the school board member to the President of the United States, must remember they answer to the people, not to professional government bureaucrats, not to government lawyers and not to their elevated campaign advisers It may be true the public has lost a lot of confidence in the national media, but imagine a government run amuck without media watchdogs holding it in check.

Even Thomas Jefferson, who battled with the press, at times excoriating newspapers in his letters, understood that a free press with unfettered access was essential to the health of democracy.

Jefferson would grow irritated with newspapers, even writing, “Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper,” but he is also the man who famously wrote in a letter to Edward Carrington in 1787, “And were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.”

South Forsyth Middle School won the Georgia State Regional on March 4.

Forsyth middle schools win regionals, qualify for state science Olympiad FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Vickery Creek Middle School and South Forsyth Middle School both won their regional tournaments and will be competing at the Georgia Science Olympiad on March 18 at South Cobb High School.

Science Olympiad tournaments are run as a series of 23 events that students compete in as pairs, on topics ranging from astronomy to food science to tower construction.

Vickery Creek won the Oconee County Regional Feb 25. At Oconee, Vickery Creek earned 15 first place

medals and 41 medals overall. This is Vickery Creek’s third consecutive year winning their regional and advancing to the state tournament.

South Forsyth won the Georgia State Regional on March 4 and took home eight first place medals and 24 medals overall.

South Forsyth is returning to the state tournament for the second year in a row.

Georgia is one of the most competitive states in science Olympiad, with the top two teams advancing to the national tournament.

NFHS student wins optimist club essay contest CUMMING, Ga. – Jessica Prouty, a senior at North Forsyth High School, won the Sawnee-Cumming Optimist Club’s 2017 essay contest. This is an annual competition open to Forsyth County students. The theme for this year was “Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges.” Prouty’s essay was the winner out of 333 entries.

“I wrote my paper from a personal experience perspective,” Prouty said.

Prouty underwent surgery to remove an ovarian dermoid cyst that is sometimes referred to as “a silent killer” in women.

“Jessica did a wonderful job of ar-

ticulating in a clear and logical manner this year’s theme,” said Gwyn Hanie, committee chair of the Sawnee-Cumming Club’s essay contest.

Prouty lives in Cumming with her father and mother, Patrick and Judy, along with sisters, Kayleigh and Briana.

She said that she hopes to study computer science at Georgia Tech.

Prouty was awarded $500 for her win. Her essay will be forwarded to the zone level to compete with winners from other Optimist Clubs in northeast Georgia. If a winner at that level, her essay will go to the district level that includes Georgia and east Tennessee.

Man loses two guns, suspects teenage worker FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A man reported two of his firearms missing March 2.

The man said he went shooting with a friend Feb. 25 and when he came home he showed his teenage neighbor, who he had hired to do some exterior work on his home, the guns.

He spoke with the teen about his gun collection and told him he usually

keeps his guns in his car.

The next day the man left for the airport and noticed his gun wasn’t in his car, but figured he had brought it inside to clean. When he returned March 1, he noticed more guns were missing and couldn’t locate them. He said his car must have been unlocked.

He said the teen who was working on his home had access to the garage.

The man thought it was suspicious the guns went missing after he showed them to the teen.

The man asked the teen if he had seen the guns and the teen asked if the man was accusing him of stealing.

The man told the teen he looked everywhere and was going to have to file a police report to which the teen replied that the man “should look twice before assuming they were stolen because that’s a felony.”

Ga. Milestones prep tests

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. —Mathus Academy has announced that 2017 Georgia Milestones Math prep tests (MathCore) for third through eighth grade students in the metro Atlanta Area will be conducted at Settles Bridge Elementary School in Suwanee on March 18. The prep test are free, however parents may make a donation to Settles Bridge ES, who is providing the venue so as to keep the test free for all students.

The same tests will be available on mathusacademy.org for additional practice starting March 19 and ending April 18. These tests will provide practice for students before the annual Georgia Milestones in April.

Additionally, Mathus Academy will also conduct Math Genius Critical Thinking National Math online contests for third through eighth graders from around the U.S. from March 12-18.

While students test at SBES, parents will meet in the cafeteria and Dr. Brian Lack, the Math Curriculum specialist for Forsyth County will address parents.
