Bank account hacked after job post response JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman was locked out of her bank account after responding to a suspicious job posting.

The woman responded to a job advertisement that said she could earn $6,500-$12,000 in a week. She was eventually contacted over the phone by a man who told her that she would receive a $4,000 check in a few days to deposit and then withdraw $2,000 to send back to an address.

The man then asked her about her bank account and convinced her to provide him with security questions and other information to access her account.

When the woman tried to check her bank account March 3, she was unable to access it. She could not reset her password either as her security questions had been changed.

What are the Differences Between LASIK and PRK?

Laser vision correction or refractive surgery gives individuals the opportunity to reduce their dependency on glasses or contact lenses. The two primary types of refractive surgeries offered are LASIK and PRK. LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is the most commonly performed refractive surgery with over 700,000 procedures done in 2014 by surgeons in the US.

In LASIK, a thin flap is initially created on the cornea using a microkeratome blade, or more recently a femtosecond laser. This flap is then lifted, and an excimer laser is employed to reshape the underlying corneal bed according to the patient’s prescription, or refractive error. Once this has been performed, the flap is laid back into its original position as the last step. The procedure is usually done for both eyes in about 15 minutes.

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is an alternative procedure and actually the predecessor to LASIK. As opposed to the creation of a flap, the top layer of the cornea called the epithelium is removed carefully. The same excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea.

After this, a contact lens is placed on the eye as a bandage to allow the surface of the eye to heal. Similar to LASIK, the procedure is complete in about 15 minutes.

The final visual results with both LASIK and PRK are very comparable.

The biggest difference lies in the recovery period. Recovery after LASIK is fairly quick – most patients feel minimal discomfort and can see well within a few days of the procedure. With PRK, patients usually experience mild to moderate discomfort as the surface epithelial cells heal in over the first 3-5 days. Visual recovery is gradual, with the final outcome achieved over a few weeks. Most patients undergoing PRK take some days off from school or work, whereas LASIK patients usually resume their daily activities within the next day or so.

So why choose PRK? Some individuals have thin corneas or unusual corneal shapes that precludes them for being suitable candidates for LASIK. In these individuals, PRK is the safer alternative with similar outcomes. Additionally, there is no risk for any flap-related complications with PRK. All patients undergoing refractive surgery will experience temporary dry eye symptoms; however, these symptoms tend to be less severe with PRK.

In rare instances, patients with extreme nearsightedness or high myopia are not candidates for either LASIK or PRK. For these individuals, phakic intraocular lenses, or IOLs, is a safer alternative. These implantable lenses are placed within the eye – either between the cornea and iris or behind the iris. While the procedure is more invasive and expensive, phakic IOL surgery can produce very good results for patients.

The Atlanta Coyote Project said its members strongly reject the “wildlife-killing contest as both inhumane and unwise. For a state agency whose mission is to ‘sustain, enhance, protect and conserve Georgia’s natural, historic and cultural resources’ to sponsor such a program is reprehensible.”

Mowry added that the Georgia DNR contradicts itself with a quote from its coyote fact sheet that said, “The presence of coyotes in an ecosystem ‘proves to be an asset in maintaining the balance of wildlife in Georgia.’”

But the department has said the challenge is consistent with and supported by the Department Of Natural Resources and the Wildlife Resources Division’s missions, with which Killmaster agrees.

“Yes, coyotes serve some ecological function,” he said. “But our goal is to remind people they have the ability to manage coyotes. This is not a measure to eradicate coyotes in the state. It’s far from that. Any sort of contest or bounty programs are not conducive to eradication.”

Killmaster said the DNR has received a lot of complaints, both by those against the challenge but also by people who’ve had pets taken by coyotes or hunters concerned about the impact of coyotes on native wildlife.

Despite the criticism, Killmaster said he thinks the challenge has already been successful.

“This is an effort to remind people that coyotes can be taken 365 days a year,” he said. “If they have problems with coyotes then they have that tool to address those issues. I think this will be a success.”

But Mowry thinks the reminder to hunters is a weak justification for the challenge. He said predators, like coyotes, will limit their own numbers so humans don’t need to interfere.

“So what? I don’t agree with that anyway but to compound that by incentivizing the practice by offering a reward is wrong,” he said. “Many states are working to ban these ‘killing contests’ because it’s like cock fighting, which we don’t do anymore. This sends the message to people that you should go out and kill as many as you can. This is a black eye for our state that we’re going to encourage this kind of a thing.”

Every dog has its day Milton K-9 units, Alpharetta’s Canine Assistance celebrate K-9 Veteran’s Day

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Monday was observed as National K9 Veteran’s Day, a day celebrating military, police and service dogs, with dogs from Milton police, Sandy Springs police, Alpharetta’s K-9 Assistance program and Canton’s GAK9 program demonstrating what they do at The Phoenix at Milton assisted living center.

Students from Carrington Academy preschool and future residents of The Phoenix at Milton were in attendance to get a look at the canines as their trainers described their duties and their training regimen.

Milton officer Joshua Reece introduced the students to Kyro, a German Shephard with the Milton police department. Kyro works with police detecting narcotics.

North Fulton mosques open

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON – The Atlanta Muslim community organized an Atlanta area Visit a Mosque Day Saturday, March 11, and North Fulton mosques participated by opening their doors to the public.

With so many headlines these days harping on religious differences, Atlanta Muslims invited the public into their mosques – there are some 50 in the metro area – to dispel disinformation about Muslims living and working in the community.

Although most mosques are always open to the public, this was an opportunity for their neighbors to visit in a casual setting with Muslims and understand what they really believe.

“It is a chance to learn more about us as Muslims, and a chance to know us as neighbors,” said Roswell resident Ehab Jameel.

Jameel was born in Jordan, the son of a Jordanian Air Force pilot, but his family moved to America when he was 6 when an uncle convinced him of the opportunities to be had in the United States. He grew up in upstate New York.

Jameel, now a citizen, went on to earn a degree at Georgia Tech and find a career. He has made Georgia his home these last 20 years. He and his family live in Roswell.

His point was simply that the American dream reaches out and attracts people all over the world.

“I am an American. I speak like an American, I love American food, I laugh at American jokes. One of my daughters is an equestrian now. She is riding in a competition this week. And I am a Muslim.

“So it is unfortunate that that all people hear about in the news is ISIS and other extremists who distort our faith,” he said.

“But Muslims in America want the same things all other Americans want – to have a good job, a nice place to live and raise a family,” Jameel said. “We hope that this is one of many events that everyone will join in to help foster a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood among all religious communities. Together, we can encourage people of all faiths to learn more about each other and build relationships which will ultimately strengthen our communities.”.

Coyotes don’t belong in Georgia I wrote my first news article about coyotes in North Fulton around 20 years ago. They were news then.

Roswell residents were enjoying living next door to federal parkland and the HATCHER HURD solitude and beauty Executive Editor hatcher@appenmediagroup.com of the parks.

What they did not enjoy was losing their cats and other pets to coyotes. It made them uncomfortable for their small children to play outside alone. That was the news: Coyotes are in the suburbs.

It is not much news now. But what is news is the apparent brazenness of the beasts that have become so comfortable in the area. Some coyotes have taken up residence in neighborhoods themselves. That is disquieting. As they lose their fear of humans, they can become something more than a nuisance.

They resemble dogs and are often mistaken for dogs, at least at a distance. And as they lose their fear of humans, they become a possible threat

to children. I haven’t written a story about a coyote attack on a child yet, and I don’t want to.

Like all wild animals, coyotes are susceptible to rabies. And a rabid coyote, like the rabid dog or raccoon, is a threat to public health.

Coyotes are not native to Georgia.

That is why there is no hunting season for coyotes. They can be taken at any time.

Why did they migrate here? The main reason is there are no wolves in the Southeast anymore. Wolves saw coyotes as competitors and a wolf pack is rather discouraging to coyotes, which are mostly solitary creatures.

Coyote populations are growing all over the United States. The wolves are gone, and with them, nature’s check on coyote population. Now coyotes have settled into the Southeast.

They are back because they chiefly live off rodents, and in checking those populations, they perform a service.

But coyotes are adept at finding their niche in our society, so they will continue to multiply and expand their range among humans if left unchecked.

Now the Georgia Department of Nat-

ural Resources’ Division of Wildlife has deemed the coyote presence a nuisance and has offered a bounty program to hunters. It is in the form of a lottery for a lifetime hunting license. Your ticket is a dead coyote.

This sounds barbarous and cruel, but that is how nature operates. Predation is nature’s way of maintaining balance.

These coyotes feast mostly on rabbits, squirrels and mice but they also take small deer. And in addition to pets, they take domestic animals including chickens, goats, lambs and even calves.

There was one member of the General Assembly I saw who suggested a $1,000 bounty for a coyote. That’s ridiculous. I don’t want to see hunters from all over the Southeast bringing in their dead coyotes at a grand a pop.

I think that was just a sop to hunters. I sure don’t want to see less than able hunters prowling the national parks or neighborhoods trying to bag enough coyotes to buy a new F-150.

And I sure don’t want taxpayers paying for it.

But thinning them out and making coyotes more shy of humans and the places where humans congregate

makes sense.

The reality is the DNR allows thinning of most critters that threaten to upset the ecological balance. Hunters do the job quite well. Even with deer hunting season each year, it still becomes necessary sometimes to thin deer herds (harvest is the euphemism) when the populations outstrip the land’s ability to support them.

It keeps those populations healthier and more stable.

While it may seem cruel to hunt these animals, it is with a purpose.

There is no “nice” way to deal with such nuisances. And we want the DNR to deal with such issues before they become larger problems.

And Mr. Whiskers will thank you for it.

Coyote ugly: Long live the coyote If you haven’t heard yet, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is hosting a Coyote Challenge to lighten the breed’s population, thinning the herd, so to speak.

I feel like this is a plot to a B-list movie that will inevitably go horribly wrong, or that we aren’t currently living in the year 2017, but perhaps 1917 or even 1817.

No, the fact is we are living in 2017 in good old Georgia and seem to be trying our best to live up to the Southern stereotypes.

This killing contest is just plain barbaric. This seems like a way to control an animal populace prior to our modern technology and efforts. It’s like we’re regressing back to our uneducated, ignorant ways.

I understand it’s believed that we need to lessen the coyote population.

That’s one of the reasons the agency is holding the contest. And sure, it’s never a good thing when a coyote wanders into a neighborhood and eats, kills or injures a family pet.

But let’s back up a bit. That same department said coyotes are in fact an asset in maintaining the balance of wildlife in the state, according to the Atlanta Coyote Project, a group of scientists devoted to learning about the animal.

I grew up in a neighborhood that backed up to a creek and was surrounded by a natural buffer of trees.

My elementary school was not even half a mile away. We heard or saw coyotes all the time including daytime sightings on the playground that forced us to skip outdoor recess. As much as I played outside as a child, I never felt threatened by the animals.

Today we may be seeing coyotes more in our neighborhoods and on our roads. That’s probably due to us demolishing their natural habitats to build our own homes and places to shop and eat. It’s no wonder they’re encroaching in our space. That’s exactly what we did

... If we continue to kill these animals, their former territory won’t go unclaimed.

Instead, a new coyote will move in as they’ll believe more food is available. to them, and they don’t know where to go.

Surely we can learn how to peacefully coexist without resorting to murdering as many living animals as we can. This contest seems to be fighting fire with fire, which usually doesn’t have a happy ending.

According to the Atlanta Coyote Project, if we continue to kill these animals, their former territory won’t go unclaimed. Instead, a new coyote will move in, as they’ll believe more food is available. This will inevitably lead to more coyote pups. And more pups

leads to the exact opposite outcome of what the Department of Natural Resources is expecting.

Instead of fewer coyotes, we’ll probably end up with more than when we started. The Humane Society of the United States backs this by saying if you shoot or poison coyotes, you’ll have just as many again within a year or two.

When you start to mess with nature, there always seem to be unintended consequences. Man does not always know best when dealing with wild animals.

We need to keep our pets and children indoors at nighttime and during coyote mating season and figure out a way to live with our furry neighbors who more than likely aren’t going away, no matter what brutal method we nauseatingly, happily take part in.

Surely we have evolved enough to know an eye for an eye just leaves everyone blind?

Wood defends comments on Congressional candidate’s name

When my family moved to Roswell in the 1960’s, muted turmoil surrounded school integration. My mother had helped with voter registration of African-Americans.

At school, I was earmarked as “liberal” about racial integration. The African-American children, myself and a bewildered boy from the North were set in two rows, slightly removed from the class, an arrangement replicated on field trips, etc.

I understood little of the undercurrents: the bravery of the black students, the ways in which many white students who used the “n” word, were merely conforming to the words they heard.

It was elementary school for heaven’s sakes!

Decades have passed since those days of racial distrust. Good schools and beautiful parks now symbolize Roswell. But I was discouraged to read a recent article in the New Yorker magazine.

ROSWELL, Ga. — As the race for the 6th Congressional District seat heats up, Roswell’s Mayor Jere Wood has drawn some criticism over recent comments regarding one candidate.

OSOFF On Friday, March 3, Wood was quoted in an article by The New Yorker talking about Democrat candidate Jon Ossoff’s “ethnic-sounding name.”

“This is a mature voter base. If someone is going down the WOOD list, they’re going to vote for somebody who is familiar. If you just say ‘Ossoff,’ some folks are going to think, ‘Is he Muslim? Is he Lebanese? Is he Indian?’ It’s an eth-

nic-sounding name, even though he may be a white guy, from Scotland or wherever,” Wood said in the magazine article, “Can this Democrat Win the Georgia Sixth?”

Ossoff was born and raised in the 6th District to a father of Russian-Lithuanian descent and a mother who emigrated from Australia.

In response to the article, Wood told the Herald that his initial comments had to do with lack of name recognition.

“Now, with two million dollars’ worth of TV ads, Jon’s name is well known,” Wood said. “I regret my choice of words in my interview with The New Yorker and it does not represent Roswell. I expect him to poll well in the 6th District election.”

Wood added that two of Ossoff’s campaign signs are located at his law office on the corner of Canton and Woodstock Street.

In response, Ossoff said he is looking to keep running a clean campaign.

Wood remarks how Ossoff’s name has an off-puttingly Muslim ring, not quite white.

I hope immigrants, who helped build Roswell and live here, note implications of Wood’s ‘mature voter,’ as one who votes based on race, religion or ancestral origin.

Maybe those days when many white students shunned black students are not so far away.

I equally hope that ‘mature’ voters respond to candidates’ integrity and ideas. Or is it still 1966 where “white guy” is the main qualification?

A ride to keep Kiersten’s memory alive Cycling event to benefit local pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — A cycling event and St. Baldrick’s Shave-A-Thon March 18 at Olde Blind Dog in Crabapple will honor the memory of Kiersten Dickson, a former server at the restaurant and beloved daughter, who lost her battle to cancer just three days before her 21st birthday in June 2015.

Seven doctors at three different practices were unable to find the cause of 19-year-old Kiersten Dickson’s bronchitis-like symptoms that wouldn’t go away.

She was otherwise healthy, a soccer player who had earned a scholarship to play at the University of West Georgia.

But a CT scan finally revealed the problem — Kiersten’s lungs were riddled with cancerous tumors which had spread throughout her body.

Kiersten was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer, a terminal diagnosis.

Her father, John, said after Kiersten was made aware of the severity of the cancer, she accepted that the disease would ultimately end her life. He said while most people change drastically when given such news, Kiersten remained the same, joyful, energetic, charming young woman she always had been.

“She did not become a different person,” John said. “She stayed relentlessly positive. Kiersten didn’t know a stranger, she was a friend to anyone and everyone.”

Kiersten went out of her way to befriend new students and helped special needs students by pushing their wheelchairs, carrying their books or just talking to them while attending high school at Sequoyah and later at West Georgia and Georgia State, John said.

“She won over everyone with her personality and goofy charm,” he said.

Kiersten began chemotherapy treatment for her lung cancer at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. During her treatment, which Kiersten understood was likely just buying her a little bit more time, she noticed something that unsettled her.

Many children were also sharing in her battle against cancer, most very young and without the emotional support of a close-knit family such as hers.

Kiersten Dickson Though she knew her time was limited, she had her parents, John and Shawn, vow to keep her legacy alive by fighting the menace of pediatric cancer.

In 2016, Kiersten’s parents created the Kiersten Dickson Memorial Cancer Research Fund in an effort to support the severely underfunded studies of pediatric cancer. According to St. Baldrick’s Foundation, only 4 percent of federal cancer research funding is dedicated to pediatric research.

Dickson started the fund to support the parents of pediatric cancer patients who stay in the metro Atlanta area. To ensure that all the funds raised go to worthy causes, the Dickersons pay the fees associated with the charity out of their own pockets.

Before her diagnosis, Kiersten was a server at Olde Blind Dog in Milton, and for the second straight year, the restaurant will hold a benefit in conjunction with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to keep Kiersten’s wishes to benefit children with pediatric cancer.

The St. Paddy O’Pedal Ride to Conquer Childhood Cancer will take place at Olde Blind Dog on March 18 and will include multiple cycling events and a shave-a-thon to benefit Kiersten’s fund and St. Baldrick’s.

A 6.5-mile family fun ride around Olde Blind Dog, a 25-mile social ride and 45-mile ride will begin at the restaurant and loop through North Fulton and Forsyth County before finishing back at the restaurant. The shave-athon will follow the cycling runs.

John Dickson said the event is a way to keep alive the memory of Kiersten and to make an effort that no parent has to go through the struggle he and his wife faced.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton artists Lori Wynne and Robert Patterson will showcase their creations at the American Craft Show at the Cobb Galleria March 17-19. The event is the largest indoor juried showcase in the Southeast.

Robert Patterson, whose studio is located in Milton, will enter his woodworking creations, and Lori Wynne, a wardrobe consultant, will compete in a “style slam,” showcasing handmade fashions.

Patterson, who trained in drawing and painting, has found his passion in woodworking. He will submit a series of creations that he has been crafting for five years, intricate designs based on shaker trays.

The event will be Patterson’s third entry to an American Craft Council show. He submitted works to last year’s Atlanta event as well as an event in Baltimore a few weeks ago.

Patterson said the events enable him to make a living off what he loves as attendees will have the opportunity to purchase his works.

Wynne will go through the fashions on display and create an outfit which will be showcased by models. She says the importance in the style slam is showing people how to correctly don the wearable art.

“Some people may see a beautiful

piece, a necklace for instance, and not know how to wear it or incorporate it into their wardrobe,” she said. “My job is beneficial for those looking to create a style of their own and also benefits the artists whose works are up for sale.”

Wynne will work with three or four models during the style slam. Aura Salons, with a location in Alpharetta, will do the hair and makeup for the models.

Each week from Jan. 19 to Feb. 28, the Appen Media Group papers – the Alpharetta-Roswell Herald, Milton Herald, Johns Creek Herald and Forsyth Herald – featured the Expedia CruiseShipCenter’s logo hidden somewhere on the printed pages.

Readers, including Ward, found the logo and entered to win on northfulton. com by describing exactly where the logo was found that week. Then in early March, Ward’s name was chosen out of more than 2,900 entries, double the amount from last year.

“I was flipping through the pages and saw the winner from last year. I thought, ‘that’s a fun contest,’” she said. “I never really win anything, but this is a great opportunity.”

In fact, her family thought the email letting her know she won was a hoax at first. But she recognized last year’s winner and knew it was real.

“I sent it to my family and their response was, ‘are you sure this is legitimate?’” she said. “I knew it was legitimate, and the whole family was excited.”

Ward, who is the special events manager for the City of Roswell, said she’s been on three cruises before and loves them, but she isn’t sure where she wants to go now.

“This is great fun to see how excited they are and how much they will enjoy it,” he said. “One of the things we like about our jobs is getting to help plan people’s vacations. We get to share in the fun.”

The location is entering its sixth year of business and third year doing the cruise giveaway. There are now 40 consultants who work from the Alpharetta center. The location helped plan over 1,200 vacations for customers in 2016 and has already planned more than 300 for 2017.

“We are growing because people are starting to become aware of the value of booking with us,” Bonfanti said. “That value really is that we are experts, as we cruise a lot and have been on the ships and gone to the destinations. We give people expert advice and it doesn’t cost anything.”

In addition to advice, clients don’t pay more than they would if they booked online, he said. The agency also has discounts on thousands of staterooms, sometimes up to 60 percent less.

There are four Expedia CruiseShipCenters in metro Atlanta: Alpharetta, Roswell, Sugar Hill and Lawrenceville.

The company expects to have 40 locations in Canada and the United States in 2017 and up to 500 locations in the next five years.

Mandatory recess on track to become state law next year Time for play would double in Fulton from 15 minutes to 30

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA – Georgia lawmakers are poised to make recess mandatory for elementary school children, joining fewer than half the states in making “unstructured activity time” as important as reading and writing.

Currently, only 21 of the nation’s 50 states require recess, with only a handful of those states located in the South.

House Bill 273, which is receiving bipartisan support in the Georgia Legislature, will take the decision out of the hands of the local school board and make it mandatory to provide at least 30 minutes of recess for students in grades K-8.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Demetrius Douglas (D-Stockbridge), said his legislation addresses an issue that is important to parents and critical to the health of students. “[This] legislation simply encourages children to play outside and engage in

physical activity,” said Rep. Douglas, a former linebacker for the University of Georgia. “Research shows that students benefit tremendously from recess, and I am proud to sponsor legislation that promotes the physical, social and emotional health of Georgia’s young learners.”

Even 30 minutes of free play could help reverse a trend toward obesity, notes the nation’s top health agency.

According to the CDC, obesity rates for children have more than tripled since 1970 with 20 percent of children ages 6-19 considered obese. The CDC recommends 60 minutes of physical activity each day for children.

HB 273 passed the House on March 3 and is now in the Senate for what is shaping up to be a fast track to the governor’s desk. If passed and signed into legislation, the changes would go into effect for the 2017-2018 school year.

The state’s largest association for educators, PAGE (Professional Association for Georgia Educators), has given its support to HB 273, but believes it only addresses part of the issue.

“PAGE has concerns that some of the underlying issues that prompt legislation on mandated recess are not

addressed, which are over-testing and funding,” said Craig Harper, director of communications for PAGE. “Our teacher members are very supportive of more recess for kids, as it demonstrably improves student learning. Recess often loses out in scheduling because of the need for as much instructional time as possible.”

There is currently no state laws mandating recess, with those decisions left to the local school system, noted a spokesman for the Georgia Department of Education.

In the Fulton County School System, policy mandates 15 minutes of

recess each day in grades K-5, with the “unstructured activity time” occurring outside when possible.

School officials note the policy was amended in years past to limit school staff from taking recess away from students for behavior or academic reasons.

“The time should be scheduled to serve as a break during academic learning and should not to be used as a reward or incentive nor withheld for academic reasons,” explained Susan Hale, spokesperson for Fulton Schools.

As far as middle schools, Hale noted recess is provided at the discretion of the school’s principal.

Recent Roswell closings leave holes for opportunity Time now to forge vision for retail-commercial Steve Stroud is executive director of Roswell Inc, that city’s public-private economic development arm. He has laid out a strategy to revitalize retail development in his city.

ROSWELL, Ga. – With the recent closings of Target, Kohl’s, Rack Room Shoes and a variety of other retailers in Roswell, we know there is growing concern over the future of retail and STEVE STROUD overall economic Executive Director Roswell Inc development in the city, with a particular concern for East Roswell.

As a longtime Roswell resident and 30-year business entrepreneur in this city, I am likewise disappointed by these recent announcements. However, I also find myself excited by the opportunity this creates for us to cast vision for what East Roswell could become in the future.

As many of you know, what is happening to retail in Roswell is not isolated to our city – it’s happening across the nation.

Retail landscape changing The demand for traditional retail is decreasing rapidly, as the market for online shopping continues to grow.

This, alongside the continued trend toward mixed-used development, has become a major game-changer.

This shift in consumer behavior has

been causing waves in the industry for several years and is set to completely transform the way retail looks 5 to 10 years from now.

It’s also caused major retailers, from Target to Macy’s to Walgreens, to completely rethink their business models.

While stores that can’t sustain a profit are closing, CEOs are brainstorming ways for their companies to adapt to the new environment and changing consumer.

People often ask me if that means traditional brick-and-mortar shops will become a thing of the past.

The overwhelming majority of industry experts say no.

However, there is a growing understanding that to remain competitive in the new retail environment, stores and shopping districts will need to offer something consumers can’t get on their phones – a shopping experience.

Consumers are increasingly desiring experience-driven shopping areas like Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market in Atlanta and the downtown areas in Woodstock and Lawrenceville. These destination retail concepts are what most industry leaders forecast as the future for non-online retail.

How does Roswell adapt?

Last month, Roswell Inc was invited to participate in two public forums about the future of economic development along the Holcomb Bridge Road Corridor.

The discussions at each focused on trends in commercial development and retail and also started conversations

We do that through keeping up with market trends; working in partnership with business owners, entrepreneurs, city leaders, residents and property developers; and keeping an eye on what’s happening in the community.

As these discussions continue in the coming months, our commitment to each of you is that we will continue to work diligently as a leader and catalyst for smart economic development that aligns with both the culture and character of Roswell and the demands of the market.

What does that look like?

Currently, our Roswell Inc team is finalizing the details to begin a compre-

hensive retail study for Roswell. This will focus on the needs for the city as a whole as well as help us develop a plan for the distinct, unique retail needs and opportunities for each part of our community.

We are also working closely with city staff on a proposal to begin a study along Holcomb Bridge Road, east of Ga. 400.

This will help map out future redevelopment in East Roswell and identify what types of projects make sense for the community and the market. It will also work in tandem with the Ga. 9 study.

As both these projects progress, there will be opportunities for public input along the way through a number of ways: surveys, focus groups and town hall meetings for example.

Your voice is an important part of this process, and we encourage you to stay involved.

Business all too good in the ATL Making better It’s all too easy in Atlanta – and anywhere else I suppose – to get bogged down in the weeds. But if you take the time to stand up and look around, things are really good here in GEOFF SMITH the ATL. Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com I was talking to a friend of mine over the weekend. He is an integral part of an important company headquartered here in Atlanta. He told me that recruiters are calling him all the time trying to get him to take similar positions at other local companies.

He has no plans of leaving his job, but it’s a comfort for him to know that if he had to he could easily jump ship and land squarely on his feet.

The metro area added 70,800 new jobs last year, the 10th largest improvement of all the major U.S. metropolitan cities.

New corporations and talented employees are moving here every day. As a result, the metro area is undergoing a renaissance of quality development.

With new employees comes the need for new office space and new places for people to live. There is enough demand to rival what we went through back in the 1980s and 1990s – but this time, the expectations are significantly higher.

With more experienced city planners and banks requiring developers to prove the long-term economic viability of their projects, today’s developments are catapulting our quality of life.

It’s insane what is going on. In intown Atlanta, just look at fun projects like the “Beer Gardens on the Beltline,” the redevelopment of the Historic Old Fourth Ward Park and Ponce City Market.

campus and around the MARTA station there. Just east in Sandy Springs you’ll see construction of Mercedes-Benz’ new North American Headquarters, as well as the new city center.

Just south of there you’ll see the $2 billion redevelopment of the old GM plant in Doraville.

Alpharettans are seeing the second phase of Avalon finish up, the ground breaking of their new city-center and the submission of a $450 million office project on a mixed-use campus. And that’s just to name a few. I left out the Roman coliseum and the tech campus.

I ran into my friend Lamar Wakefield of Wakefield Beasley & Associates last week. I was floored to hear about all of the new suburban city centers that his firm is designing around the metro area. And these are ambitious projects where city planners are working with developers to create real downtowns with unique character, and good balances of mixed-use to create economically viable projects where residents can live, work and play.

If you stand up and look above the weeds, you won’t find this kind of development going on in other cities. We are living in great times where developers and city planners are thinking big.

That’s why it pained me to read Hatcher Hurd’s article last week about the dirty politics taking place in the

Roswell City Council election.

Roswell is teeming with opportunity, perhaps more than any other suburban city. Roswell Mayor Jere Wood worked hard over the last 20 years, leading the charge to secure more parkland than probably anywhere else in the metro area – maybe the southeast. Much of it runs along the Chattahoochee River and is preserved with walking and biking trails.

The natural amenities are huge here. Throw that in with the preserved southern mansions, the 150- year-old buildings, and Canton Street, and you have a city with a serious “It” factor.

It’s a shame that with all this beauty and growth, many people only want to see the traffic. No doubt it’s a concern, but it’s a sign of success.

And our city leaders are working hard to alleviate it. It’s been said a million different ways, but the truth is you are either growing or dying. And here in the ATL, we are surely growing and life is very good.

BlackBerry data center sold for $30M Kimball Bridge site to be used as data center

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The former site of a BlackBerry facility was purchased Feb. 24 for $30 million and will become a data center for Ascent.

Ascent, which provides comprehensive data center solutions, in partnership with TowerBrook Capital Partners, bought the 40-acre property at 4905

North Point Parkway and Kimball Bridge Road.

BlackBerry and Ascent entered into partial leasebacks for data center space at the property which will be called Ascent ATL1 Data Center. The facility is well-suited for cloud and edge deployment servers with plug and play data center space immediately available, the company said.

“The sale leaseback arrangement enables the customer to focus on its core business and provides them a partner in their data center facility operations, while at the same time

allowing Ascent to bring additional high quality, purpose-built assets to market under its growing data center portfolio,” Ascent said.

Ascent also bought a data center in Toronto along with its Alpharetta purchase due to the centers’ being equipped with “significant security characteristics, concurrently maintainable infrastructure for 100 percent uptime and other site-specific features,” the company said.

Ascent CEO Phil Horstmann said the acquisition is a complement to the company’s solutions set and its ability

to deliver quickly on complex customer data center challenges.

Horstmann said the company was reevaluating its real estate portfolio and operational needs.

The company’s staff put together an action plan that enabled it to execute the international transaction in a short period of time.

“We look forward to working with our customer and bringing these enterprise-grade facilities and their respective data center capabilities to market for additional tenants,” Horstmann said.

The morning seminar, “Digital Disruption” was intriguing. Dave Moorman, founder of Dynasis, talked about the power what he calls digital disruption.

Global examples are the internet’s impact on education. An industry-wide example is how Netflix highjacked the video rental industry from Blockbuster.

Such digital disruption can happen in local markets as well. Many said that they felt they could not afford to miss Moorman’s talk.

Fighting CF through fun, food and purpose Annual Shamrockin’ for a Cure March 25 at Verizon

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@northsidewoman.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. - From the first small gathering of friends and family to a star-studded bash that attracts hundreds at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, the Shamrockin’ for A Cure event has become as synonymous with the month of March as St. Patrick’s Day and green beer.

But the one facet that has not changed over the years is the focus on raising money to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis – a progressive genetic disease that affects the lungs and primarily begins in childhood.

The annual event began in 2008 when Jon and Pam Baker of Roswell created Shamrockin’ for Cure along with close friends as a fundraising event to raise both awareness and money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Atlanta. Both of the Bakers’ sons, were diagnosed with CF—the youngest in utero during Pam’s pregnancy.

For Lara Dolan who has been part of the Shamrockin’ for a Cure event since that first event, the growth has been welcome – in both raising money for research as well as awareness.

“ShamRockin’ now has many more corporate sponsors who not only contribute money, but raise the visibility of the event and the cause deep into our community,“ said Dolan, pointing to sponsors like Jon Baker Financial, William B. Orkin Foundation, Connected Fibers, and RBM Alpharetta.

Unlike many of the people involved with the Shamrockin’ event, Dolan does not have a child with CF. But that has not stopped the Alpharetta Realtor from contributing her time and talents to the success of the event.

“I got involved after we attended the first, very small, Shamrockin’,” said

Dolan, who serves in the “army” of volunteers as the sponsors committee chairperson. “We have long-time family friends who lost their daughter to CF in 2006. This was a very special group of people, and felt I could bring skills and resources to help take Shamrockin’ to higher levels.”

Over the past eight years, Shamrockin’ has raised more than $1.7 million for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the goal for this year’s event on March 25 is $500,000. The success of the event here in North Fulton has led to similar startups across the country,

This year, more than 30 local restaurants will be serving dinner, top-shelf spirits will flow, the music never stops, the dance floor is always open, and hundreds of items will be offered during the auction.

Dolan said ultimately Shamrockin’s success comes down to a few things: people and uniqueness.

“We attract incredible, dedicated,

Having a child with CF has spurred many parents to get involved with Shamrockin’, as a way to both raise money for something that impacts them personally, but also to be with people who share the common bond.

Jennifer Wood of Cumming learned just months ago that her 10-month old son, Finn, had the disease. That diagnosis upended her world, but she found the lifeline in Shamrockin’ along with a group of instant friends on the same journey.

“I am new to the CF community and am so thankful for events like Shamrockin’!” said Wood. “They continue to pave the way toward a cure [and] this event is vital to the fight. And does so in such a fun way!”

The “fun” part may be one of the reasons for the success of the event, which emphasizes the purpose is to

creative and energetic people, and it’s different,” she explained. “Five-K runs and black-tie events are wonderful, but Shamrockin’ is about kicking up your heels, tossing on your green hat, and having such a great time you almost forget you are at a fundraiser.”

Jamie Roney and her husband, Ross, of Atlanta are among those who were drawn to Shamrockin’ to not only connect with other parents, but also to commit their energy into finding a cure.

Their 18-month old daughter, Desi, was diagnosed with CF at 10 days old.

“The army that leads Shamrockin’ is stellar,” said Jamie, a stay-at-home mom. “They step forward and say ‘we will fight for you’. Their goals are our goals, they understand our battle and hope. This army and this event mean the world to us!”

Melissa Pinkston and her husband, JB, live in Inman Park with son Grayton, and have been tireless advocates

for fighting CF both through Shamrockin’ as well as their own foundation, Grayton’s Guardians.

Their son was also diagnosed with CF at 10 days old, and just days later family and friends sprung to action and formed Grayton’s Guardians.

“We went to our first CF Foundation event when Grayton was two months old and were welcomed with open arms by other CF families,” said Melissa, a sales rep for Spotify. “Grayton is now 17 months old and we’re so grateful for all the support and love everyone has provided us on our journey.”

Through Grayton’s Guardians, the Pinkstons have raised over $50,000 to help cure CF. They are also involved in raising money for Shamrockin’. Melissa credits Pam Baker with being the driving force since the beginning.

“She is truly the leader of the CF Mama Bear tribe,” Melissa said. “She inspires everyone in the CF community, but, especially me, as a new mom trying to make sense of everything.”

Meeting Pam also helped Erica Tarnacki of Dawsonville come to terms with the diagnosis of CF for her 2-yearold son, Lincoln.

“I met Pam Baker at our very first CF education day,” said Erica, who also has a 7-month old daughter with husband, Tony. “We were terrified new parents and Pam was so kind and answered all of the questions we threw at her with so much grace and compassion.”

Erica said she hopes to follow in her footsteps and blaze the same trail that Pam has blazed with Shamrockin’.

“Since [Lincoln’s diagnosis] we’ve been doing what any parents in our situation would do, we are fighting for our son’s life every single day.”

Looking to the future, Dolan said the biggest party is yet to come.

“It will be the year that we announce a CURE for every CF patient. Now THAT will be one heck of a Shamrockin’!”

equivalent of two years. The ability to “catch up” gets lost if the sleep loss in chronic.

A lack of sleep causes a lack of attention span and debilitates the body’s ability to extract glucose from the bloodstream. This is the energy that all cells use to function, especially in the prefrontal cortex. Less sleep means less attention, less focus and less self- control.

Milton Montessori expands in 2017 Milton Montessori School started in January 2008 as Red Apple Montessori. Back then, there were only two classrooms, one Toddler and one Primary.

Through the years, the school has added two additional classrooms, and now, Milton Montessori School is set to open their new 6000 sq. ft school building in the summer of 2017.

The expansion will allow Milton Montessori School to offer Montessori programs from infants through third grade.

While the school will utilize the original school building for the new Lower Elementary program, the Infant, Toddler and Primary classrooms will be located in the new building. Along with the new building, there will be additional playground space added with new equipment, and the outdoor learning environment will include a newly expanded garden. While the growth of the school has added more classrooms and space, several key things remain the same.

The teaching staff at Milton Montessori has been the same since the early days of the school. As the classrooms were added, the Montessori teaching staff grew too, and they have stayed. This Montessori teaching staff has around fifty years of combined teaching experience, and that is not the only thing that sets Milton Montessori School apart from other schools.

Another valuable asset is the number of children in each class. The new classrooms will offer space for twenty Primary children in the classrooms. This lower number of children will allow more individualized time for lessons with students, while still offering a

large enough group for socialization within the mixed age group. The new building opens this summer, and Summer Camp is right around the corner.

Milton Montessori School will offer STEM Summer Camp from June 5th through July 28th. The

February Eagle Scouts for the Northern Ridge District NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Northern Ridge Boy Scout District for the cities of Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton recently announced its newest Eagle Scouts. These are the Scouts passed their Board of Review on Feb. 23 held at the Alpharetta Presbyterian Church: Nathaniel Cole Anderson, from Troop 69, sponsored by Alpharetta First United Methodist Church, whose project was the design and creation of an outdoor covered shooting platform for the rifle range at Camp Highland located in Ellijay.

Benjamin Browning from Troop 69, was sponsored by Alpharetta First United Methodist Church. His project was the restoration of the outdoor classroom located at Creekview Elementary School. He built and replaced nine benches in this outdoor classroom.

Enrique Pujals, of Troop 1134, was sponsored by St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church. His project was the collection of household items to staff a kitchen for the Mike’s Angels Refugee house in Escondida, Guatemala. These items included pots pans, mixing bowls and plates, utensils to serve 25 occupants.

Local Boy Scout growing, distributing food for local charities Program will collect excess food from local growers

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Alpharetta High School sophomore Brent Miller has devised an Eagle Scout project to benefit local charities, donating excess food from home growers to help battle food insecurity for local families in need.

Dubbed “Grower’s Connection,” Miller’s project stemmed from his volunteer work with North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) during its Thanksgiving food drive.

He witnessed how much of an impact the food drive was making for local families struggling with food insecurity, and he formulated his plan to help with the same cause.

“Every year my family would have excess produce from our home garden.

I knew about the food insecurity problems in our community, so I decided that we could use that excess produce to help the food insecurity problem,” Miller said.

Miller began his project by incubating 100 vegetable plants at his family’s home. The plants will be given out for free to Grower’s Connection supporters to grow on their own property. The harvest from those plants will then go to benefit NFCC and Meals by Grace, a Forsyth County-based non-profit that provides a pantry and meals for local families in need.

The plants will be distributed at Alpharetta City Hall on April 15.

Even those who don’t receive a plant from Miller’s incubator can donate excess food grown at a home garden to the cause.

Miller and a team of volunteers will take donations from June through September.

Growers can drop off produce at the parking lots of the city halls of Alpharetta and Johns Creek or the Birmingham Village Publix parking lot every Tues- BRENT MILLER Local Boy Scout day and Friday. The volunteers will then transport the produce to NFCC and Meals by Grace.

For his project, Stuver designed and constructed Two Walking Stick Corals for the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center. Stuver then created and stocked these corals with walking sticks all branded with Autrey Mill’s name.

behavior.

Charles Kevers, of Troop 1717, was sponsored by Cross of Life Lutheran Church. For his project, Kevers created a school club called Road to Success that would help connect students to career paths. This organization would hold panel speaker events, field trips to local colleges and panel discussion on career choices.

McTeague celebrated a century of life with a special party at Addington Place of Alpharetta, an assisted living and memory care center where she now resides.

Born March 6, 1917 in New York City, McTeague has never once slowed down. She has two children and seven grandchildren, who refer to her as “Grandma Dynomite,” and has survived three husbands and one paramour.

“Violette is a smart and beautiful woman ahead of her time,” said her son Bob Schmitz. “She believes her kind heart and fun-loving attitude have gotten her to where she is today.”

McTeague started her career at RKO Paramount Theatre in New York, where she hoped to become a dancer. Instead, she found her passion as a fashion clothes buyer for Best & Company on 5th Avenue. McTeague later became the owner and proprietor of Gallery 63, also in New York City.

BOB SCHMITZ Violette’s son She didn’t retire until the late 1970’s, when she moved to Cape Coral, Fla. Despite her retirement, McTeague continued to lead an active life by volunteering for 23 years as a buyer and clerk at Cape Coral Hospital.

She enjoyed taking Tai Chi long until she reached the age of 97 and still loves to dance and play cards.

McTeague, according to Schmitz, has always embraced life.

Echoing her favorite singer Frank Sinatra, McTeague lives by the words, “I did it my way.”

The Drake House doubles housing capacity Nonprofit honors volunteers, announces changes

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Volunteers are often the stars of any nonprofit, and the Drake House knows this better than most. On March 9, The Drake House held its annual volunteer appreciation dinner hosted by First Baptist Roswell Church to celebrate the spirit of giving.

The Milton chapter of the National Charity League helped support the event.

Executive Director Kathy Swahn used the occasion to officially announce the nonprofit, which provides shelter and guidance for displaced women and their children, has expanded its facilities.

“On Feb. 14, we closed on Roswell Oaks Apartment Complex and raised an additional 16 units right next to the Drake House, adjacent to what we already have,” Swahn said. “This is doubling our capacity to 32 units and our beds from 44 to 88.”

In 2016 alone, The Drake House served 393 families and 723 children in the North Fulton area. The group’s graduation success rates have gone up to 79 percent, and all of the hot water heaters in the existing units have been replaced.

In November, The Drake House officially started a new afterschool program. This helps not only the children, but the mothers, who often have no car, as well.

In terms of people who have slept at the Drake House over the year, they have served over 11,920 bed nights this past year. These are women and chil-

Director of Programs Christy Merritt said the families at the Drake House are tending to stay longer, now on average for 142 days, because of the lack of affordable housing options in the area.

This was one of the reasons the nonprofit decided to expand its housing.

The volunteers have been instrumental in helping these efforts, Swahn said, and the Drake House thanks them.

“The amazing thing is that right now we live in a world where time is a commodity,” said Volunteer and Resource Coordinator Melinda Szegedi. “I’ve realized that volunteers are not just people who really do want to make a difference, but they’re also willing to take the time to actually make a difference, to give that time up for somebody else.”

“The Drake House moms are strong, steadfast and faithful,” volunteer Meg Chapman said. “They have fallen on hard times, but they are determined to triumph and overcome, and they are relentless in their pursuits. My spirit and faith is lifted helping them.”

Journalism under attack: Georgia

I am excited to introduce our latest Blackbox project, our first that will cover events across the entire state.

We are seeing a rapid change in the way we produce and consume news. Unfortunately, not all changes are for the better, and some have given us an entirely new set of HANS APPEN challenges.

We do not have a timetable to complete this project, and frankly I hope that we don’t. As long as I am in the business, I believe it is our duty at Appen Media Group to do our part in protecting journalism and your right to stay informed.

The first amendment after all, is first for a reason.

In next week’s editions, look for articles from Hatcher Hurd on a history of the Freedom of Information Act, and from Pat Fox on what to know about making open records requests in Georgia.

The week after that we will begin the process of documenting the state of journalism in Georgia with examples across the state of people who are influencing and being affected by an evolving news world.

Every document held in government halls is your piece of paper.

Every penny spent by government is your money.

From the courthouse to the statehouse to the White House, government belongs to the governed and not the governing.

ZACHARY You have the right to know what the governing are up to, always. We are self-governed.

The only way the public, and the press, can hold government accountable is by having unfettered access to its deliberations and the documents it holds.

Transparency is not liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat.

The media champions open government in its traditional role as the Fourth Estate, knowing that independent checks and balances are critical to our liberty.

When city council, county commission or the board of education brokers a deal behind closed doors and conceals documents containing important information the public wants and needs to know our freedoms are compromised.

Local government has the biggest impact in our lives on a day-to-day basis.

Whether it is in the form of property taxes, sales taxes, business taxes, state-shared dollars or federal grants, loans and funding, local government is 100 percent taxpayer funded. The decisions being made, the monies being spent and the records being kept by city hall, the county commission, the board of education or the hospital authority affect us all, and when

Elected officials — from the school board member to the President of the United States, must remember they answer to the people, not to professional government bureaucrats, not to government lawyers and not to their elevated campaign advisers It may be true the public has lost a lot of confidence in the national media, but imagine a government run amuck without media watchdogs holding it in check.

Even Thomas Jefferson, who battled with the press, at times excoriating newspapers in his letters, understood that a free press with unfettered access was essential to the health of democracy.

Jefferson would grow irritated with newspapers, even writing, “Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper,” but he is also the man who famously wrote in a letter to Edward Carrington in 1787, “And were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.”

When you ask to see the county’s operating budget or challenge whether city council has the right to go into a closed session, remember it’s your right. It’s your business.

Milton baseball’s late comeback propels team over Hooch Eagles scores seven runs in final 2 innings, win 10-8

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Milton’s 10-8 win over Chattahoochee (7-4, 0-0) last Thursday certainly won’t go down as either teams’ most fundamentally sound game of this season. The teams combined for seven errors and 16 walks, and nine of the 18 total runs scored were earned runs. Pretty it wasn’t, but it certainly was exciting.

Milton (8-3, 0-0) trailed 8-3 after five innings and was on its fifth pitcher. But with Trevor Iannone taking over on the mound, Milton finally found someone consistently throwing strikes, and was able to mount a comeback, thanks in part to crucial errors by Hooch.

Milton scored four runs in the top of the sixth, two the result of a Chattahoochee error, and scored three in the top of the seventh to secure the comeback win over the Cougars.

It was a promising start for Milton after the first inning as Milton scored two runs and starting pitcher Cole Stupp forced three up and three down in the bottom of the inning.

of the second before things began to unravel for the Eagles.

Hooch’s Ryan Zweber led the half-inning with a double, Zach Solomon was hit by a pitch, and Brock Marsho loaded the bases with a single with one out.

Though Milton didn’t have a single hit for three innings, its offense woke up in the top of the sixth. Garrett Cook, who went 2-4 with two RBIs, hit an RBI single to score Hamrock from third, who had reached third after a single and an error on attempted pickoff.

After a walk from Hall to start the top of the seventh, Hooch’s Sean Zweber replaced Hall on the mound.

The potential tying run was tagged out at the plate on a bunt by Hamrock, but the Eagles’ next batter, Cook, doubled to tie the game.

Zweber hit a batter and gave up a walk to load the bases. Milton then scored on a fielder’s choice and a bases loaded walk to take its first lead, 10-8, since the top of the first.

Hooch put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cougars were unable to muster any runs, giving Milton the thrilling comeback win.

Milton begins region play this week, a home-and-home series against West Forsyth and Friday against North Forsyth.

Chattahoochee faces three region opponents this week in Centennial, Cambridge and Alpharetta.

Yarbrough looks back on Northview’s historic season Lady Titans win first region championship, reach Final Four

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga.— Entering this season, Northview girls basketball head coach Chris Yarbrough knew his team has an abundance of talent, but he said he couldn’t have dreamed just how good this year’s Lady Titans turned out to be.

“It was really amazing to see what this group accomplished,” Yarbrough said. “Each one of our players took to heart what we were trying to do, and that enabled us to reach so many great accomplishments this year.”

Those accomplishments include the school’s first-ever region championship in basketball, a program record for wins in a season (28) and its first trip to the Final Four.

Yarbrough said the goal at the outset was to capture the region title after finishing runner-up to West Forsyth in the 2015-16 season. With the Forsyth County teams out of Northview’s region this season, Northview suddenly found itself the favorites after having spent so many seasons as the underdog.

The Lady Titans certainly showed their hunger for that first region crown in the Region 7-AAAAAA this season, compiling a 16-0 regular season region record and outscoring opponents by an average of 25 points per game during the region tournament, including a 58-38 win over Alpharetta in the region title game Feb. 11.

“The fact that we had never won a region championship made that day so monumental for us. The girls were so happy after that game and I really think it was a springboard into the state tournament,” Yarbrough said.

The Northview Lady Titans won the program’s first region championship this season. Northview’s memorable season ended March 4 in the Final Four.

In the state tournament, Northview cruised to the Final Four with lopsided wins over South Paulding, Valdosta and Stephenson.

That’s where the historic season came to an end, as Harrison used stingy defense to down the Lady Titans 57-39 on March 4. Northview’s 39 points was its second lowest scoring game of the season.

After the loss to Harrison, Yarbrough said he talked at length about his two seniors, Shannon Titus and Erika Hama, whose playing time at Northview had just ended.

“I said to our players, if you can model their behavior and their actions, you will go a long way in life. Erika and Shannon were two of the best players I have ever coached regardless of skill or talent.”

Shannon Titus left an undeniable legacy of doing just about everything for the Lady Titans. Titus was a stalwart

on defense, leading the team in steals, blocks and assists and finishing second in scoring for Northview’s offense.

“Shannon was so amazing for us.

She would do anything I asked of her unselfishly,” Yarbrough said.

Hama saw limited playing time this year, but always seemed to make an impact in her limited amount of minutes.

“Erika doesn’t get as much credit as she deserves. She is 100 percent all the time and she leads by example, was always doing the dirty work and I can’t say enough about how hard she would play,” Yarbrough said.

Much of Northview’s playing time resided with its younger players, including juniors Megan Cistulli and Makayla Davis, sophomores Ashlee Austin and Maya Richards as well as freshman point guard Asjah Innis.

Yarbrough said his younger players all improved from last season.

“Maya [Richards] rebounded and

scored a lot better for us this year. Her presence in the middle was a huge part of us really starting to roll in mid-January. Before that, we were averaging about 50 points a game, and then Maya stepped us for us and we were scoring in the 60s and 70s,” he said. “[Austin] definitely improved this year and added her three point shot which will be big for us going forward.

Cistulli and Davis both came up in some big games to hit some threes for us that if they don’t hit, we probably don’t win.”

With much of its talent returning next year, Yarbrough said Northview will increase its strength of schedule to try and improve further.

“The best way for us to get to that goal is to continue to play really tough teams. We may not win 28 games next year but losing is okay if you learn from it. The key is to not be losing at the end of the season,” he said.

“They have tasted success and now they want to work harder because they want to get to that mountaintop and win the state championship.”

JOHNS CREEK, Ga — In a battle of two of the top teams in Region 7-AAAAAA, Chattahoochee scored 30 seconds into the first overtime period to propel the Cougars to victory over Centennial.

Centennial incurred a red card five minutes into the second half, playing a man down for the rest of the period and overtime.

Both Chattahoochee and Centennial entered the game 2-0 against region opponents, and the winner would earn a crucial edge as the both teams are expected to be in the running for a region title.

Chattahoochee led 1-0 entering the second half, with senior Jackson Siegel scoring for the Cougars.

Just five minutes into the second half, Centennial’s Osvaldo Cabrales earned a red card, which drew sharp criticism from Knights’ head coach Ahmed Gathing who argued to the referee that no warning was given before the red card was shown.

But playing a man down did not deter the Knights from scoring. Just three minutes after the red card the Knights’ tied the game with a goal from Kidan McLetchie who bounced a shot past Hooch keeper Jack Corrigan on the right post.

With the man advantage and the game tied, Chattahoochee picked up its attack and sent a flurry of shots in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

The Knights’ defense limited many quality chances by playing back.

Knights’ keeper Jacob Samnik made six saves in the second half, including three in a row after a Chattahoochee corner with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

With 30 seconds remaining, Hooch moved the ball quickly downfield and had a quality chance after a cross found its way into the box, but Hooch’s shot was blocked by a defender and cleared.

Entering overtime, Chattahoochee head coach Les Meenan said his team’s strategy was to “keep attacking.”

“They were sitting back defensively looking to go to penalty kicks and try to beat us there. Our strategy was the opposite. We are not that type of team.

We want to go forward and try and score goals and play expansive soccer,” he said.

Just 30 seconds in to the overtime period, Hooch’s attack finally reaped its reward as Nichols Troyer found the back of the net with a shot in the box, giving Hooch the 2-1 lead.

From there, Chattahoochee was able to hang on for the win and remain unbeaten in Region 7-AAAAAA. “Some teams are going to play certain ways against us that makes it hard for us to play, and Centennial did that very well tonight. We struggled. It gives us something to work on but we will get better and we will be okay,” said Meenan.

“We are just concentrating on the next game and looking at our own performances and we’ll do better than we did tonight.”

The Cougars will face non-region opponents this week in the Bob Sims Varsity Tournament at Westminster.

Centennial plays region foe Northview this Friday.

Milton High School produces ‘9 to 5 The Muscial’ MILTON, Ga. – Milton Theatre Company presents “9 to 5 The Musical,” with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton.

Milton Theatre Company will stage six performances beginning Thursday, March 16 – Saturday March 18 and concluding Thursday, March 23 – Saturday March 25. All performances will take place at 7 p.m.

Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie, “9 to 5” is set in the late 70s.

George Cudney Paulk Ge

George Cudney Paulk, III, 71, a long-time teacher at Milton High School in Alpharetta, died Wednesday, March 1, 2017.

He was the husband of the late Mary Nelle (Taylor) Paulk and the father of two adult daughters.

Born in Newport, RI, Oct. 9, 1945, he was the son of Dr. George Cudney Paulk, Jr. and Elna (Plambeck) Paulk, later Williams. He was the eldest of three siblings and was raised in Atlanta where he graduated from Sandy Springs High School.

He completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees through the University of Georgia.

George taught business at Milton High School for 32 years and was a beloved mentor and colleague until his retirement in 2002. In

addition to teaching, he and his wife built a successful photography business. For nearly three decades, the Paulks were constant fixtures in the lives of Alpharetta families whether as teachers or photographers. He could always get a reticent kid to laugh by quacking like Donald Duck.

George was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother, Gregory Bryan Paulk. He is survived by his children, Crystal Paulk-Buchanan of Atlanta, Melody (Paulk) Dunn of Lilburn and two grandchildren.

He also leaves behind a sister, Linda (Paulk) Hughes of Greensboro, N.C. A memorial service for Mr. Paulk was held March 6, 2017, at Roswell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Atlanta Humane Society.

$4K of items stolen during work out JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman reported March 3 that her car was broken into while she was at the gym and over $4,000 worth of items was missing.

The woman had parked her car at the LA Fitness on Medlock Bridge Road early that morning. When she came out after 10 a.m., the woman saw that the passenger side door window was smashed. The door was still locked The woman’s purse, wallet, passport, credit cards and $40 cash were gone.

No fingerprints were found and the parking lot had no cameras.

Tag check yields stolen credit cards ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A routine license plate check recently ended with a man arrested for financial transaction card theft.

Police were patrolling shortly after midnight on Haynes Bridge Road, when

one officer found that a silver Acura was displaying an expired license plate tag.

The driver, 28-year-old Jerel Thomas of Alpharetta, was pulled over.

While police talked to him, they found marijuana and six credit cards with different names on them.

Thomas was arrested without incident.

Tablets, handbags stolen from Ga. 9 Target MILTON, Ga. — Milton police were called to Target on Ga. 9 after a store loss prevention officer informed them that nine items totaling $761 had been stolen.

The items included three Amazon Fire 7 kid’s tablets, two Amazon Fire 7 tablets, two Zeiss virtual reality systems and two handbags.

The suspect, a woman, was recorded on Target’s surveillance equipment. She drove away in a white Honda Ridgeline with a Georgia tag.

Credit check reveals identity fraud MILTON, Ga. — A Milton resident applied for a line of credit through an Apple Store in February and was denied. When he requested a credit report to find out why he was denied, he found that he had an outstanding debt of $655 with Verizon Wireless. The account was opened in his name in July 2014 and was delinquent in June 2015.

The man does did not open an account with Verizon and said that he believes someone stole his identity to open the account.
