Neither had noticed or heard anything out of the ordinary that night. Three days prior, however, the couple had listed the vehicle for sale. The wife cancelled her credit card prior to calling police.

Alpharetta man arrested after leaving accident scene MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta man was arrested on April 2 for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident near the Crooked Creek subdivision in Milton. A resident was attempting to turn into the subdivision when his car was struck on the passenger side by a passing vehicle which did not stop following the contact. The victim recorded the Jeep Cherokee’s tag number and later contacted police. A Milton officer found the Jeep at a home along Ga. 9, where he saw three subjects standing nearby drinking beer. Juan Antonia NeriDamian, 35, admitted to driving the vehicle around the time of the incident but did not recall striking a vehicle. The Jeep’s tag matched that given by the victim and the officer observed damage on the left front bumper, “consistent with the damage” described by the victim. Neri-Damian was arrested for failure

Dealership reports theft of wheels off vehicle ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An employee at the United BMW on Alpharetta Highway reported March 31 that the wheels and tires on one of their new models had been stolen overnight. Sometime between 8:30 p.m. the previous night and 6 a.m. that morning, someone had entered the property and taken the parts from a new 2018 BMW 750i. The car had been parked in the “very back” of the lot by a curb. It was sitting on four rocks when police arrived. No lug nuts were left around the vehicle, and the company had no surveillance cameras in that area. The employee said that the lower side gate had been unlocked that night. The total value of the missing parts was $4,000.

Got Allergies?

PAID ADVERTISEMENT

Springtime Q & A with Dr. Thomas Chacko Rated one of the Top Allergists in Atlanta and selected for the cover of Atlanta Top Doctor Magazine, Dr. Thomas Chacko is Atlanta’s expert in Allergies and Asthma. With recent speaking opportunities on CNN, HLN, WebMD, and Fox News, Dr. Chacko is sought after nationally for his expertise in all areas of adult and pediatric allergy and immunology. These days though, Dr. Chacko is extremely busy with Atlanta’s exceptionally high spring pollen counts. Here are some Q and As to learn both about Dr. Chacko as well as treatment for springtime allergies.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Queens, N.Y. My parents still reside in Bayside Queens—where I grew up. I only left home to attend college at Penn State University and then medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

When did you discover medicine and decide to make it your career?

My mother is a pediatrician, and I always admired how much she enjoyed her work. That led me into wanting to go into medicine. I knew at a pretty young age that I wanted to be a doctor, likely around 9th grade or so.

How did you discover allergy medicine and decide that it was the right specialty for you?

In my first year of residency at NYU, a fellow resident told me to check out the field of Allergy/Immunology. I learned I get to take care of both children and adults as well as get to know families (as allergies tend to be hereditary). I did few rotations and really fell in love witht the field. To this day, I’m very happy I chose this path and hope to practice as long as I can.

Do you have a mentor or someone who has been instrumental in your career?

Again, It would be my mother. She loved what she did and it was also how she provided for our family.

Will you tell us a little bit about your family?

My wife is a high school teacher. She taught at both Miton and Cambridge and now works partime in my practice. I have 3 children, Christina, 10 years old; Jaya, 8; and TJ, 7. We live in the area, a community called Harrington Falls in Alpharetta. All 3 children attend Alpharetta Elementary (Go Eagles – both AES Eagles and Superbowl champs – Philadelphia Eagles – my wife is a hardcore Philly fan).

What can we do to help treat these springtime allergies?

I would recommend you watch the pollen counts to help gage what the environment would be like. I would try to minimize exposure , possible by driving with the windows up as well as keeping the windows closed at home. Saline rinses are also a natural way to help clear your sinuses of pollen and mucus. Also there are good over the counter medications such as the antihistamine and nasal steroid sprays.

What if none of this is working and still miserable in the spring?

Then, you should likely go see an allergist. There are many other treatments, such as immunotherapy than can desensitize to the pollen. Most of my patients who are on allergy shots are doing much better with the spring pollens.

Any other tips?

Don’t let your spring be miserable. See your doctor and get on the proper treatment to enjoy the springtime.

Forums to feature candidates for mayor, council post seats By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Residents will have several chances between now and the May 22 election to see candidates for Alpharetta municipal seats address local issues. Four organizations have scheduled a total of five political forums that will feature the candidates for mayor and City Council seats. Bike Alpharetta has scheduled the first open forum for all six candidates for 7 p.m., Thursday, April 19 at City Hall. City Council Post 3 candidates Katie Harding and Karen Richard, Post 4 contenders John Hipes and Clifford Martin and mayoral candidates Jim Gilvin and Chris Owen have been invited to take part. The four City Council candidates will take part in a question-and-answer session from 7 to 7:45 p.m., and the two mayoral candidates will participate in an identical forum from 8 to 8:45 p.m. All six candidates have committed to attending Bike Alpharetta’s forum, the nonprofit organization said.

“This is a great opportunity to hear from those vying for leadership roles in our community,” said Bill Lusby, president of Bike Alpharetta, who will moderate the forum. “We are excited about the commitment from all candidates. We hope our neighbors and friends will take advantage of this community conversation.” The Alpharetta Business Association is sponsoring two candidate forums. The first one, April 23, will feature the four candidates for City Council and runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The second forum, featuring the two candidates for mayor, will be from 6:30-8 p.m., May 1. Both forums will be held in the multi-purpose room on the first floor of City Hall and each will afford the public a chance to ask questions. They will be moderated by Alpharetta Business Association President John Ray. On May 4, Alpharetta High School is hosting a public debate between the candidates. The event, which runs from 6- 8 p.m., will be held at the high school auditorium and is being organized

Alpharetta pushes revisions to ethics ordinance By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – By a 3-1 vote Monday, the Alpharetta City Council gave preliminary approval to a plan broadening the scope of the city’s ethics ordinance for public officials. One key element in the revision, set for a final vote before the council April 16, is the formation of a five-member

citizens’ ethics board which would field and adjudicate ethics charges leveled against Alpharetta officials. Councilman Jason Binder, who helped draft the new ordinance, said he thinks the revisions will remove some of the cloudiness in the current ordinance. In particular, he said it addresses “implicit” conflicts, whereby a city official or their family could potentially benefit from an official action.

Another important addition, Binder said, is a definition of “substantial interest.” The new document provides clear definitions of how much of a financial, business or blood relationship a city official can have with an entity and remain eligible to vote on a matter relating to that entity. “I was surprised we didn’t have that in there before,” Binder said. Councilman Ben Burnett said the

revisions are helpful because they identify situations where a possible conflict of interest may arise. It identifies cases where a council member should recuse him or herself from a vote, listing family members and other close associates who might profit from a “yea” or “nay” vote. He said it also strengthens the requirement of council members to publically announce the reasons for their recusal, a requirement within the current ethics ordinance but rarely enforced, he said. The measure drew some pushback from Councilman Dan Merkel who cast the lone dissenting vote. He argued that an ethics board can be used as a political cudgel to embarrass or harass officials and recommended the council consider a system where initial charges are validated before they are made public. He also argued, unsuccessfully, that revisions to the city’s ethics code should wait until after the May 22 election when a full seven-member City Council will be seated. “The concern is that all of a sudden, somebody has a political grind, they can start making [unfounded] accusations and they wind up in the paper,” Merkel said. “I’d like to see at least an

New legislation will affect North Fulton cities, residents Utility pole locations stay in cities’ hands By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – North Fulton cities breathed a sigh of relief this month when a key piece of legislation died a quiet death in the waning hours of the 2018 Georgia Legislative Session. Senate Bill 426, which would have allowed utility companies unimpeded access to place poles and cell towers in public right of ways, failed to come up for a final vote before the final gavel was struck. City leaders in Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek and Milton had all passed resolutions opposing the measure, which sailed through both chambers in March. The cities argued the legislation took power to control their own environment out of their hands and placed it in the hands of special interests. “I realize everybody came out with their own amendments, but all the municipalities kind of got their teeth out,” said Alpharetta City Council-

man Ben Burnett. He said the fact that local legislators face reelection opposition this year made those who initially supported the bill, “think long and hard about forcing this down our throats.” At a March 5 City Council meeting, Burnett called out local legislators state Sen. Brandon Beach and Rep. Chuck Martin for their support of the bill, saying that both men once served in Alpharetta city government and understand land-use issues. “They could put a 50-foot tower at a four-way stop, and we have no control over it,” Burnett said of the proposed legislation. Mayor Donald Mitchell was more vocal, saying that based on legislation he’s seen over the past two years, sometimes local legislators forget who they represent. The City of Alpharetta, he said, takes great pains to safeguard its appearance, ensuring that all construction meets a high bar to preserve aesthetics. “We care about every light pole that goes in, every sign that goes up, and we go to very exacting details to make sure that businesses coming in conform to

the standards and the high bar that we have in Alpharetta,” Mitchell said. “And to have our representative not represent us and represent these large telecommunications companies I think is appalling.” Opposition to the legislation was widespread. Kelli Bennett, communications and marketing associate with the Georgia Municipal Association, said both the House and Senate had companion bills that were poised for passage but failed to come up for a final vote. That doesn’t mean the issue is dead, she said. “We definitely do see those issues coming back up,” she said, adding that the GMA plans to attend any hearings on the matter this summer to ensure local control is part of any future legislation. “We do expect to see this come up again, and we do expect to advocate on behalf of our cities.” Other legislative action that directly affects North Fulton cities includes: • Transit: Legislation was passed to form a 13-county regional transit authority that gives counties the option to enact sales taxes to fund a regional transit system. “I think the bill that was passed was

generally acceptable to us,” Alpharetta City Councilman Jason Binder said. The city passed a resolution recently endorsing public transit, “but we wanted to make sure the funding for expansion was going to go beyond just the three counties that are paying right now (Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton), and we get a bigger say in how it was expanding and what that would look like.” • Property assessments: Sparked by last year’s public outcry, state legislators passed a series of bills in March that establish a cap on how much a Fulton County home appraisal could rise each year for tax purposes. Under the new formula, the Fulton County Assessor’s Office would take the base year for assessments – either 2016, 2017 or 2018, whichever is lowest – then adjust it according to the Consumer Price Index with a limit of a 3 percent increase. The cap applies for those residential properties taxed by cities, Fulton County and Fulton County Schools. Voters must approve the tax cap legislation at the polls this November, and, if passed, it will not go into effect until 2019.

Student vaping raises concerns for local parents NORTH FULTON, Ga. — A new phenomenon has been sweeping through local schools and has become a cause of concern for several parents. Vaping, or the use of e-cigarettes, has been growing among middle and high school students in recent years. According to Pathways 2 Life, a local prevention, crisis intervention and support group nonprofit, nearly a quarter of high school students are vaping or have tried vaping in the past year. Representatives from Pathways 2 Life recently met with parents at Mount Pisgah Christian School to speak about vaping and its possible dangers. Vaping is the act of inhaling vapor made from an e-liquid, concentrate or herb that is heated through an electronic device. The liquid typically contains flavoring or nicotine, but may also contain cancer-causing chemicals and heavy metals. One chemical in particular which is used for flavoring, diacetyl, has raised concerns for its links to potential respiratory illness. Prolonged inhalation of diacetyl has been linked to bronchioli-

tis obliterans, also known as “popcorn lungs,” which is scarring of the lungs and narrowing of the airways. E-cigarettes have become one of the most common uses of nicotine for teenagers and young adults, according to the Surgeon General of the United States. And that creates an opportunity for addiction and abuse. “The teen years are critical to brain development which continues into adulthood,” said Ken Griffin, director of prevention at Pathways 2 Life. “Teens who vape are putting themselves at risk for long-term effects. Because nicotine impacts the development of the brain’s reward system, vaping over a long period of time can not only lead to addiction of nicotine, but it can also make drugs including cocaine or methamphetamine more pleasurable to a teen’s brain.” E-cigarettes can potentially aid adult smokers if used as a complete substitute for cigarettes, as they generally contain fewer toxic chemicals than those found in regular cigarettes, according to the Center for Disease Control. But the CDC cautions that vaping is not harmless and is not considered safe for youths or people who currently do not use tobacco products.

... Vaping over a long period of time can not only lead to addiction of nicotine, but it can also make drugs including cocaine or methamphetamine more pleasurable to a teen’s brain.” KEN GRIFFIN Director of prevention at Pathways 2 Life The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not list e-cigarettes as an approved aid for quitting smoking. That’s why Pathways 2 Life has been meeting with both parents and students to warn them of the dangers. “In the past couple of years, we would mention vaping in passing to students when discussing tobacco and nicotine,” Griffin said. “Now, we are writing curriculum, holding parent con-

ferences and teaching specific lessons on vaping, its dangers and why it is a trending industry and movement. “We’ve seen an explosion of vape shops open in the area… So, since March, we have increased our ‘footprint’ and began addressing this topic in six area schools, speaking and interacting with over 2500 students, several hundred parents and school faculties.” Potential warning signs for parents include: • Unusual aromas – Many e-liquids have flavors like candy, mint or vanilla. • Unfamiliar handheld devices – E-cigarettes come in many shapes, ranging from box-like to pen-like. • Increased thirst • Caffeine sensitivity Griffin urged parents to get involved or stay curious about all aspects of their children’s lives, not just academic. It’s important to connect as well on emotional, spiritual and social levels, not just out of fear of drug or tobacco use, but for the overall wellbeing of the child, he added. through possible political motives. Within a year of its founding in 2006, four members of the Milton City Council, including Mayor Joe Lockwood, were brought up on ethics charges before its citizens’ ethics panel. All but one of the charges were dismissed. Accusations continued throughout the city’s first years until 2010 when the City Council finally did away with the citizens’ board and appointed a three-member panel of non -resident attorneys to consider ethics cases. The charges ceased. Forsyth County took the same step two years later after a slew of ethics complaints were filed – including five against the Ethics Board itself.

Book report: ‘Loneliness’ So, often I tell myself that after I read a book I should make some notes on any significant passages or ideas, so that next week, when someone asks me what the book was about, I may be RAY APPEN able to respond. I Publisher ray@appenmediagroup.com hate it when I have read a book and cannot recall anything about it other than the general theme or plot. This short/long-term memory loss thing is frustrating and a bit ironic. It was just a couple years ago that I was on a binge reading about “memory” and especially how to retain it! I guess it didn’t work very well. Anyway, I just read “Loneliness” by John Cacioppo and William Patrick. The book was non-fiction and focused on why we humans get lonely or depressed, and the authors reviewed a number of approaches to overcoming those conditions. I read it because I am on a binge reading about the impact of social media, technology and the effect our general pace of life has on our sanity. We seem to be disconnecting and disengaging with too much of life. The impact of that disconnect takes many forms, including but not limited to, isolation, suicide, depression and addiction. That is, we’re not doing well with this and I want to know more about it. The book and the read is similar to Malcolm Gladwell’s books (“Tipping Point,” “Blink,” “Outliers,” etc.). You get a dumbed-down but usually interesting and readable overview of a complex subject that often has a direct impact on your life, your decisions and how you process life in general. It’s an entertaining blend of behavioral economics, psychology, sociology and storytelling! Here are some of my takeaways from “Loneliness:” • In the end, most if not all, of our behavior is a response to our evolutionary instinct for survival. For thousands of years humans have always found safety in their tribes – in groups. • We tend to stress out when we feel isolated or disconnected from a group. • Stress undermines our capacity to make sound decisions – to process information. Some of us, in the extreme, respond by buying assault rifles and killing as many people as we can. • When we’re outside the group, isolated to one degree or another, we are susceptible to manipulation by

People desperately need the support, the feeling of security and interaction provided by membership in a group or groups. • To study and understand behavior or a condition such as loneliness, you need to be able to measure or quantify it some way. Cacioppo and Patrick reference and reprint (with permission) the “UCLA Loneliness Scale” which is a simple 20-question test. It’s an easy test and interesting to take. • Meaningful engagement in a group makes us live longer. Cacioppo and Patrick reference studies that show that middle-aged and older men who are not meaningfully engaged in groups are 50 percent more likely to die than those who are engaged. • Social isolation in the home is especially toxic for children. Single-parent homes, latchkey kids, spousal abuse and neglect take a great toll. Children who live in social or physical isolation have greatly diminished chances in school, within their peer groups, and later, in relationships or careers. • People need a tribe and they need a sense of purpose larger than them

selves. • The book spends considerable time talking about the substantial therapeutic benefits of active participation in charitable activities – in helping people. • The final chapters talk about “today” – trends and context. In 1985 researchers asked a large pool of people “How many confidants do you have?” The most common response was three. In 2004 – nine years later – the same survey was conducted and the most common response was zero; 25 percent replied that they had no one at all with whom to talk openly and intimately. • A 2004 study by the World Health Organization reported that almost 10 percent of Americans suffered from depression or bi-polar disorder. • A 2007 survey by UNICEF of 21 wealthy nations reported that the U.S. came in second to last in terms of the welfare of its children; had the worst infant mortality rate; and had the second to worst exposure to violence and bullying, chaotic family structure and troubled relationships with family and friends.

The causes of much of this isolation and disconnectedness, as cited in the book, were numerous and ironically and frustratingly, part and parcel of “progress.” The American character that values independence and autonomous self-reliance has had a cost, and that is the loss of support from traditional sources including family, hometown, faith. Technology, mobility, careers, efficient modes of transportation, interstates, commoditized lifestyles, and our “flat world” have increasingly isolated us from what traditionally gave us cohesion, security and a meaningful sense of purpose. We need the stability and engagement of social gatherings on the porch, the street or the corner drugstore. We need our long–term relationships, engaged interaction with our neighbors. We miss the dignity, stability, and purposefulness found in multi generation households. And we need our faith. We need to start reconsidering what is important – important individually and as a society. We need, as was suggested in the book “to start thinking more about investing in “social capital” as a societal good – something that is seen as a personal and collective necessity – a major issue of personal, societal and public health.” What we want, how we measure success and how we actually live needs to change.

ROSWELL, Ga. — For nonprofits outside of Atlanta, resources and funding can be hard to find. But that doesn’t mean that there’s any less of a need within the northern suburbs. “When people think about North Fulton, they think of affluence,” said Mary Lyons, Roswell grants coordinator. “They might think about us not having the same kinds of problems other cities have. And LYONS yet, there is a growing population of low-income people here who are vital to the community. They are the people that others depend on to be able to work, in many cases.” To add another wrinkle, many grant writers likewise live closer to or within Atlanta – again, because that’s where many nonprofits have established themselves. “Simply put, it’s hard to find grant writers in this area,” Lyons said. And without the expertise or staff resources for grant writing or finding funding, a nonprofit may stagnate or disappear altogether. That’s where the City of Roswell Nonprofit Partnership Program steps in to provide a safety net of sorts. The program, established after Lyons joined the city in 2017, aims to strengthen local nonprofits and, in turn, contribute to the overall economic stability of Roswell residents and the community. It helps agencies think “more broadly” about where funding exists at state, federal and corporate levels, and exists primarily as a resource or a way to connect nonprofits with similar missions or to grants. What the program doesn’t do, however, is write the grants for the nonprofits. Lyons and Danny Blitch, who both spearhead the program, have written “pretty much every type of grant under the sun” and are willing to share their expertise with training, forums and

one-on-one guidance. Prior to working with the city, Lyons had worked with United Way of Greater Atlanta, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta and North Fulton Community Charities. “The NPP is an outstanding program through which the city and nonprofit partners are working together, as a team, to be better equipped to serve the needs of the community,” said Scott Doll, executive director of the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA. “Many of these schools that we serve have populations that are less advantaged and have less opportunity than others in our community, and the AmeriCorps grant offers us an unprecedented opportunity to pour more resources into these students than we’ve been able to traditionally.” At any given time, the program formally partners with 15-20 agencies, such as The Drake House, enAble of Georgia, Every Woman Works, North Fulton Community Charities and STAR House Foundation. To be a part of the program, a nonprofit must have an office or presence in Roswell, must verify that it is serving Roswell residents and have a 501(c)(3) designation. The program also prefers nonprofits that have been established for at least three years. One of the program’s most recent projects was to bring the Foundation Center Funding Information Network to the Roswell Library, starting May 4. The database, which houses information about nonprofit resources and community foundations across the nation, has locations in downtown Atlanta but none, until now, in the northern suburbs. It will be accessible yearround as a resource for everyone, not just nonprofits. Students and parents, for example, can use it to search for scholarships. When the Roswell Library closes in the fall for scheduled renovations, the database will temporarily be moved to the East Roswell Library for continual access. Schools to receive full state funding in FY19 Elimination of ‘austerity cuts’ means $7M more for Fulton Schools By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The Fulton County School System is welcoming news that the long-standing austerity cuts to the state education budget are over – at least for Fiscal Year 2019 – restoring full state funding to school districts for the first time in years. In one of his final education-based acts before leaving office at the end of the year, Gov. Nathan Deal amended the state’s mid-year budget to include an additional $167 million for K-12 education in FY2019. The additional funding comes from higher than anticipated revenues. “[This] will ensure the state is fully funding the Quality Basic Education funding formula and providing local school systems with 100 percent of the state’s share in financing for local schools,” Gov. Deal said in a statement released March 26. The QBE was adopted by the Georgia Legislature in 1985 to provide a basic level of state funding to public schools based on enrollment and other factors.

It has not been fully funded since 2002 when the Legislature implemented “temporary austerity cuts” following the economic downturn beginning in the early 2000s. Since 2010 when the cuts became permanent, nearly $1 billion in state funding owed to school systems has been withheld, forcing districts to turn to local tax revenues, drain reserve funds, or implement furloughs and other cost-cutting measures to operate their schools. In the Fulton County School System, austerity cuts since 2003 have totaled nearly $400 million earned —but withheld – through the QBE. Fulton Schools was among the more fortunate districts in the state, relying on healthy reserve funds and property tax revenues to alleviate the reliance on state funds. Even so, the district was forced to cut programs, including elementary band and orchestra, increase class sizes and cut hundreds of staff positions to weather the economic storm. Over the past several years, the austerity cuts have decreased as the economy improves. Fulton has seen its reductions go from a high of nearly $50

For FY19, Fulton Schools will keep more than $7 million in planned austerity cuts following Deal’s actions. “We are currently in the FY19 budget process and elated the governor has chosen to restore money to our district and fully fund QBE,” said Robert Morales, chief finance officer for Fulton Schools. Deal inherited the education austerity measures when he took office in 2011 and has worked to reduce the $1 billion annual gap since day one. State education leaders applauded his commitment to directing more money to education in every year of his tenure. “Gov. Deal inherited an austerity cut

of over one billion dollars,” said Angela Palm, director of policy for the Georgia School Boards Association. “He never added to it; but he started reducing it as soon as the state’s revenue started increasing. So, it is fitting that in his final year, he gets to end the cut and fund the QBE formula.” The austerity measures remain a part of the education funding formula, so Deal’s actions may not be permanent for districts after FY19. Future economic issues or other legislative priorities could bring the cuts back. “All parts of the state’s budget are subject to the appropriations process,” explained Meghan Frick, spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Education. “[This restoral] is specific to FY 19. The funding for QBE is made through recommendation of the governor and enactment by the Legislature.” Education advocates hope future state leaders and legislators continue the focus on education. “Our public schools have faced grave financial challenges over the years, and despite those odds, schools have persevered,” said Valarie Wilson, GSBA executive director. “We have much work to do and the stakes are higher than they have ever been.”

Roswell adopts parking fee plan for East Alley By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Canton Street’s East Alley, which has been under construction since fall 2017, is scheduled to open soon, and with it, dozens of new parking spots. In preparation of the project’s completion, the Roswell City Council voted unanimously Monday night to manage the East Alley parking with a set fee schedule. Councilman Marcelo Zapata was not at the meeting. East Alley will open up 18 new parking spots right along Canton Street, behind Zest and Ceviche. The council voted in favor of installing a solar-powered kiosk, for a proposed cost of $9,700, to register vehicles for parking there. Patrons will use the kiosk to enter their license plate. The registration device will be compatible with the ParkMobile app, the same app used for parking at Ponce City Market. The fee schedule varies slightly depending on whether people park prior to or after 6 p.m. “The city of Roswell is not getting into this to make money,” said Mayor Lori Henry. “The city of Roswell is getting into this to move people… People tend to park for a long time on Canton Street.” The fee schedule would help local businesses by helping keep parking open by encouraging people to park for a shorter amount of time, Henry added. Councilman Mike Palermo agreed and asked the council to keep the discussion about the fee schedule open and be ready to modify it if needed. In other action Monday, the council voted to approve an updated City Hall landscape plan. Palermo voted in opposition. “It is not my priority for $102,000,” Palermo said. “I’d prefer to spend that $102,000 on an additional parking lot to get our downtown more parking.” The council has heard “over and

Vendors are always looking for good farmers markets that draw a crowd, and they like the fact that we’re doing a better job of promoting them. JOHN RAY, Alpharetta Business Association president

Farmers market has grown into Alpharetta’s rite of spring Popular event begins with Saturday launch By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Preparations are underway for one of Alpharetta’s biggest draws of the year. The 13th annual Alpharetta Farmers Market kicks off Saturday with a list of some 70 vendors lining Old Canton Street downtown. The market opens runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the venue is shut off from traffic to accommodate pedestrians. Mayor Donald Mitchell will officiate for the formal opening ceremony.

John Ray, president of the Alpharetta Business Association which sponsors the event, said this year’s farmers market has added a revamped website that allows approved vendors to upload photos and information about the food they will have on hand. The site also allows visitors to scroll through the offerings by food, recipes and vendors. “Vendors are always looking for good farmers markets that draw a crowd, and they like the fact that we’re doing a better job of promoting them,” Ray said. Each weekend, the market has drawn crowds in the thousands, Ray said, and it has become a mainstay on the city’s calendar of events. The business association launched the farmers market in 2006 as a way to draw

visitors to downtown, and its popularity has grown steadily. “When we started it was about trying to bring business to downtown Alpharetta – to help with downtown business flow,” Ray said. “Getting people downtown is less of an issue now than it was 13 years ago, but what is an issue is maintaining that hometown feel that we want to have as we grow. It’s just one of those things that makes Alpharetta a great place to live … and it draws people from outside to come in and spend their money.” Farmers Market Manager Carol Anderson-Wood said the updated website will help vendors and customers alike. “As an award-winning market, we wanted to make sure we had a stream-

lined system for our customers and the vendors, so we can focus on continuing our tradition of providing amazing produce and local products every week,” Anderson-Wood said. One of the returning vendors is Southern Baked Pie Company, which joined the Market in 2017 after opening their brick and mortar location the year before. “Joining the Alpharetta Farmers Market was one of the best things we did last year,” said Schrei Michael, Alpharetta store manager. “We received such great exposure at the market! Customers that may not have made it to our store are now customers for life. Even after the market closed for the season, we experienced strong sales through the winter months.”

Juncture apartment property sold in record transaction By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Commercial real estate service firm Cushman & Wakefield has arranged the sale of Juncture, a 560-unit apartment property in Alpharetta. The firm did not disclose the amount of the transaction but did say it sets a record price for the highest garden-style, suburban sale in metro Atlanta. Reporting firm Costar set the price at $141 million. Chris Spain, Robert Stickel, Travis Presnell and Alex Brown represented the seller, JLB Partners, in the transaction. Nashville-based Carter-Haston Real Estate Services acquired the property. “The northern suburbs of Atlanta check all of the boxes for many institutional investors, between the great public schools, high-quality employment, population growth and, most of all, the high-barriers to

quartz countertops, stainless-steel appliances, handscraped hardwood flooring and sweeping high ceilings complete with crown molding. Amenities include a state-of-the-art wellness center, expansive pool and entertainment lounge. Located at 910 Deerfield Crossing Drive, the property features four unit types ranging from one bedroom/one bathroom to two bedrooms/three bathrooms, with rent ranging from $1,789 - $2,399; the market average ranges from $1,361 to $1,516 for oneand two-bedroom apartments. “Many investors are turning to the suburbs as they are seeking higher yields in supply constrained submarkets,” Presnell said. “Rent growth in the suburbs has remained higher than the core submarkets in Atlanta due to the lack of new apartment development. Also, investors are looking for pre-stabilized assets such as Juncture to capture higher stabilized yields.”

Mass transit takes giant step with the ‘ATL’ After returning from cities like Chicago and New York, people always ask me, “Why can’t we build a rail system like they have up there?” The answer is simple: It’s inGEOFF SMITH sanely expensive. Assurance Financial, Depending on gsmith@lendtheway.com who you talk to, expanding MARTA’s rail line costs somewhere between $150 million and $350 million a mile. And that’s not easy for MARTA to raise, considering the only funding it gets, other than through ridership fees, is mostly from sales taxes in Fulton, Dekalb and Clayton counties. To make any real progress toward expansion, the agency either needs to expand its presence to more metro counties or start receiving more capital subsidies from the state. This session under the Gold Dome, it got both. State Sen. Brandon Beach has been working doggedly for years to try to bring together all counties in the metro area in the name of mass transit. Beach once made a video showing how it took him almost a full day to travel from Cobb, through Fulton and Dekalb, to Gwinnett County using all the various transit options. His hard work paid off with the passage of a bill in the House and Senate that will bring together 13 metro counties and the various transit systems under one umbrella to be branded as “the ATL.” The bill would put all county leaders at the same table and give them the option to bring to a vote an increase in sales tax to fund transit expansion. This is a huge infusion of potential capital fundraising going from three counties to 13 – two of which are Cobb and Gwinnett, although it is unclear about the commitment of Cobb. The re-branding would start to

take hold in 2023, so don’t expect to see any major expansions any time soon. But it does allow our planning agencies to start thinking bigger in their planning of where to expand. It appears that the expansion of any heavy rail line farther north up Ga. 400 is however off the table. Fulton County helped facilitate a study that culminated in all the North Fulton mayors coming to the table to weigh options for future expansion of public transit. Many thought expansion of the rail line to Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell was likely. But according to an article by Patrick Fox here at the Herald, Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann said there was only unanimous consent to go with a proposal that would add bus rapid transit service along Ga. 400 and Holcomb Bridge Road, and arterial rapid transit along Old Milton Parkway, Medlock Bridge Road and Roswell Road. Those civic leaders inside the perimeter seem to be more receptive to rail expansion, especially since rail

stations have become desired locations for corporate headquarters. Just recently State Farm and Mercedes-Benz settled on sites for new regional headquarters largely because of their close proximity to a MARTA station. Other large development projects have begun next to and around other stations throughout the city. In addition to Beach’s bill in the Senate, Gov. Nathan Deal allocated more than $100 million in his budget this year to go toward transit expansion. It may not equate to a mile’s worth of heavy rail expansion, but it is a good sign that the state is focused on improving the metro area’s traffic problem. Process map can help sales Do you use a sales process in your small business? Have you aligned your sales resources to each step in the process? Are you using technology to enable your sales process DICK JONES to be more efficient? Founder & President Jones Simply Sales Creating a process map will help you to maximize both the effectiveness and efficiency of your sales process. So, what is a process map? Simply put, it is a document that breaks down each step of your sales process and allows you to “map” both human resources and technology to each step in the process. For example, the lead generation process may be done by a telemarketer, while a sales representative would be responsible for customer meetings and preparing proposals. It’s easy to create a process map using an Excel spreadsheet. Documenting all the steps in your sales process on the horizontal axis (columns) of the spreadsheet, and your sales resources on the vertical axis (rows), creates an “intersection” of a process step with the resource responsible for execution. Documenting the specific actions that occur in each intersection will provide an “end-to-end” view of who does what during all steps in your sales process. You can then add a “technology” and “tools” row at the bottom of the process map to spell out the specific systems that support each process step. Measurements of process effectiveness and efficiency, like how many leads does it take to generate a sale, or how long does it take to generate the leads, can also be used to improve your sales process. People, process and technology drive sales results, and having a process map can help you make your sales process better!

The new strong Gaining control over your fitness and your life For many people, aging equals lower metabolism, weight gain and less energy for activities you enjoy. This is directly related to loss of lean muscle. While you can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps you can take to stop the process of muscle loss and start rebuilding healthy, lean muscle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or whether you haven’t exercised in years. You can still regain lean muscle that improves your shape and increases your metabolism. Our downfall is inactivity. Too much sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies were meant to be active, stay active and be strong. When we stop doing meaningful exercise, we lose ground. What is meaningful exercise? A critical component of stimulating the improvements we seek from exercise is the achievement of momentary mus-

cular failure in each exercise performed. With steady-state activities, like walking on a treadmill or biking, there is no momentary muscular failure involved. Unless activity is demanding, it is practically worthless from an exercise perspective. However, if an activity is sufficiently demanding to take the targeted muscles to momentary failure, then it qualifies as meaningful exercise. Muscle failure should be viewed as a means of signaling the body that it needs to get stronger in order to meet the demands being placed upon it. What is the SuperSlow Zone solution? The SuperSlow Zone protocol is the original and genuine slow-motion, personal strength training workout. The exercise protocol has been proven successful in both building muscle and increasing resting metabolism, thus

allowing the body to burn more calories at rest. SuperSlow Zone provides a safe and

effective workout in a short amount of time so that you can get in, get out, and get on with your busy life!

SuperSlow Zone is helping adults get fit for life!

Orthodontics Today! By Dr. Jeff Jordan Jordan Orthodontics There’s more to a beautiful smile than straight teeth, and today’s orthodontists are uniquely qualified to help you achieve the smile that you’ve always wanted. To an orthodontist, your teeth and jaws are like a three-dimensional puzzle. Often, multiple treatment options can achieve the same desired result. So, whether it is you or your child considering treatment, orthodontists are uniquely equipped to diagnose and treat the problem. As specialists, orthodontists limit their practices to their area of expertise. As a result, you can expect to get the best care available because that’s all we do! Invisalign continues to be an excellent solution for less challenging orthodontic conditions. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that move the teeth. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks and moves the teeth a quarter of a millimeter. The number of aligners needed is dictated by how crowded or spaced out your teeth are at the beginning of treatment. Most treatments completed with aligner therapy involve less movement and shorter treatment times ranging between 6 and 12 months. However, Invisalign can be used in more difficult situations utilizing elastics to improve the bite and has also been used for more serious problems that require extractions or even reconstructive jaw surgery. Clear or ceramic tooth colored braces and wires have made orthodontic treatment more discreet and aesthetically pleasing while new super elastic memory wires have made treatment more efficient and comfortable. Heat activated super elastic memory

wires are very flexible at room temperature and can be placed into the braces on extremely crooked teeth. Then, as the wire warms in the mouth, the wire exerts a light continuous force on the teeth causing them to move a little every day. Surprisingly, the lighter forces move the teeth faster but with considerably less discomfort. Bulky braces and heavy forces are a thing of the past. Another recent innovation involves customized orthodontic appliances that are computer generated to work with each patient’s unique situation. This all-inclusive orthodontic solution includes customized brackets, wires, and placement trays. A computerized scan of the patient’s mouth is initially taken to diagnose and create a treatment plan. Customized appliances improve the efficiency of the treatment and minimize the time required to detail the bite and complete the treatment. Because of these innovations most patients finish treatment in significantly less time. Another innovation that cuts treatment time is Acceledent which can be used with any orthodontic treatment modality. Acceledent is an intraoral device that generates gentle micropulses to accelerate bone remodeling. With just 20 minutes per day, the tiny vibrations caused by Acceledent can expedite tooth movement, and therefore treatment time, by up to 50% according to one clinical study. There are many different treatment options for today’s patients! Orthodontists are using everything from clear aligners to clear, metal or lingual braces in order to produce exceptional results. So visit your board certified specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics… also known as your local orthodontist and love your smile!

Good nutrition made easy for older adults (NAPSI)—Roughly 110 million adults in the U.S. are age 50 or older. If you’re one of them or know someone who is, there’s something you need to know: As you age, your nutrition needs change. You may become less active, your metabolism slows, and your ability to absorb some nutrients becomes less efficient. You need fewer calories to keep you going—which means the amount of nutrients in your food becomes even more important. To help, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and nutrition scientists at the Jean Mayer

U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, with support from AARP Foundation, created MyPlate for Older Adults. What’s on MyPlate for Older Adults? Based on the federal government’s guide to forming healthy dietary habits, MyPlate for Older Adults makes good nutrition easy. Even better, it helps seniors with fixed incomes select healthy foods within their budget. That includes

Outpatient surgery offers almost immediate results Male incontinence happens more often than what we think. It is estimated that out of the almost 25 million Americans who have urinary incontinence, 5 million are men. However, the topic is not often discussed. “Men have difficulties talking about it,” said WellStar Medical Group urologist Paul Alphonse, M.D. “The good news is that there are ways of treating it.” Dr. Alphonse is now offering a procedure to minimize leakage associated to male incontinence at WellStar North Fulton Hospital. This procedure consists of inserting a synthetic mesh or sling in the groin area to compress the urethra under it. “The sling closes the urinary channel, minimizing the leaking caused by daily activities like coughing or sneezing,” explained Dr. Alphonse who recently completed his training to perform this procedure. The procedure takes around one hour and a half and patients are able to go home the same day. Results are almost immediate and the success rate is more than 90 percent. “For those who are outside of this success rate there are still other alternatives we can try,” said Dr. Alphonse. A common problem Between 2 and 15 percent of men ages 15 to 64, and 5 to 15 percent of men over 60 who live at home (as opposed to a nursing home), have incontinence, according to the National Association for Continence (NAFC).

Nutrition: Continued from Page 21 showing how frozen, dried and canned fruits and vegetables can be wise alternatives to fresh produce. MyPlate for Older Adults encourages eating whole grains, which are high in fiber, as well as plant-based proteins such as beans and tofu, along with fish and lean meat. Vegetables and fruits make up half the plate, reflecting the importance of eating several servings a day in a range of colors. MyPlate for Older Adults also recommends using herbs and spices instead of salt to season food. Cutting back on salt can have big health benefits—especially for older adults, who are at risk of hypertension. You can use the MyPlate for Older Adults as a tool when you shop to help

Specialist Has your oncologist talked to you about nutrition? in Integrative Oncology By Jonathan D. Stegall, MD

Cancer Treatments Including: IV Vitamin C Fractionated Chemotherapy Nutrition Supplementation

If you have cancer, you’ve probably discussed various treatment options with your oncologist such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Sadly, many oncologists are telling patients that nutrition doesn’t matter – even though we know from multiple studies that nutrition makes a significant difference. Any physician who claims to practice evidence-based medicine should be discussing nutritional guidelines with his or her patients.

So what should cancer patients be eating? A largely plantbased diet is essential, coming from organic vegetables and some organic fruits as well. The phytonutrients and antioxidants found in these foods provide DR. STEGALL strong support for the body. A mix of raw and cooked produce seems to produce the best results, rather than exclusively one or the other.

Keep the spring in tour step: Good reasons to exercise after age 50 (NAPSI)—For many older adults, growing older seems to involve an inevitable loss of strength, energy and vigor—but that need not be, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The frailty and decreased energy associated with aging are largely due to muscle loss due to inactivity. And when it comes to muscle, the old saying is

true: “Use it or lose it.” What To Do One of the best ways to keep muscles healthy and strong, the CDC advises, is through exercises called strength training. Why To Do It Done regularly, strength training builds bone and muscle and helps to

Lentils are great as well. Some animal protein is okay, but focus on minimally processed meats from animals, such as organic grass-fed beef, organic free range chicken, and wild caught fish. Healthy fats from oils, nuts, and seeds should round out the menu. Although these recommendations provide a wonderful foundation, there is a lot more to know about proper nutrition and how it should be integrated with an overall cancer treatment program. preserve strength, independence and energy. These exercises are safe and effective for women and men of all ages, including those who are not in perfect health. In fact, people with health concerns—such as arthritis or heart disease—often benefit the most from lifting weights a few times each week. Strength training, the CDC adds, can also reduce the signs and symptoms of: • Arthritis—It reduces pain and stiffness and increases strength and flexibility. • Diabetes—It improves glycemic control. • Osteoporosis—It builds bone density and reduces risk for falls. • Heart disease—It reduces cardiovascular risk by improving lipid profile and overall fitness. • Obesity—It increases metabolism, which helps burn more calories and helps with long-term weight control. • Back pain—It strengthens back and abdominal muscles to reduce stress on the spine. What’s more, studies have shown that people who exercise regularly sleep better and have less depression, more self-confidence and self-esteem, and a greater sense of well-being. Fortunately, strength training exercises are easy to learn, and have been proven safe and effective through years of thorough research. What’s more, you may be relieved to learn, there are ways to train without undo strain, aches and pains. Spring is here! Are you ready? By Lily G. Hwang, MD Board Certified Allergist, Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Patients often complain that the allergy medications that have worked for them for years are no longer providing symptom relief. Allergies can get worse over time or even develop at any point in a person’s life. A comprehensive history, along with testing, can confirm what is causing your symptoms. Many are not aware that new guidelines have established the first line treatment for allergic rhinitis to be nasal steroid sprays, and not antihistamines. The appropriate treatment plan will not only

Exercise: Continued from Page 24 the “Dr. Danger” reality TV series, previously Chief Medical Correspondent for NBC and CBS News, and Chief Foreign Correspondent for MSNBC and NBC, offers this advice: • Find a few minutes at least two to three times a week to maintain general fitness. Try three or four five-minute bursts of activity such as walking or climbing the stairs at the office. • Take two or three more minutes a day for yoga breathing and movements to help your body maintain balance, usable strength, flexibility and muscular restoration. • Spend another few minutes every day and before any vigorous exercise doing calf stretches and forward bends.

improve your health, but overall quality of life. Patients with allergies have symptoms triggered by a variety of factors. One of the major culprits here in metro Atlanta is pollen, especially in the DR.HWANG spring. Allergists need to know what pollens are in the air and how they may impact their patients in order to effectively treat them. This information, in combination with stateof-the-art testing, allows us to make the most accurate diagnosis. Identifying

and controlling allergic symptoms can lead to improvement in other health conditions like asthma, sinusitis, skin conditions, headaches, and sleep disorders. As a mom, I know first-hand what it feels like when a member of your family is not feeling well or performing at their best. I pride myself on not only providing a comprehensive diagnosis, but also in developing customized treatment plans with your family’s lifestyle in mind. • Stay hydrated before, during and after your workout. • To reduce your risk of muscle soreness after exercise, consider a massage, an Epsom salts bath or intermittent hot and cold showers, as well as proper stretching and cooldown. • Muscle strains and muscle pulls are major health concerns for weekend athletes. Signs you should look for alerting you to rest your muscles and avoid overtraining are a higher than normal resting heart rate, disrupted sleep due to an elevated heart rate, muscle cramping and muscle twitching. • Eat right. In addition to lots of fruits and vegetables and a few lean meats, consume foods with magnesium, which helps fight inflammation, and with vitamin B12—especially if you’re over 50—such as fortified cereals. Drink three cups of fat-free or

low-fat milk throughout the day or consume the equivalent in yogurt, cheese or other dairy products. Consider an anti-inflammatory diet—cut out sugar, potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant. • Go topical. Topical pain relievers such as creams, gels and patches work locally. For example, the Salonpas Lidocaine 4% Pain Relieving Gel-Patch provides the maximum strength of lidocaine available without a prescription. According to the Center for Medicare Advocacy, “[Lidocaine] is a highly effective pain reliever and its unique non -narcotic and nonaddictive properties make it a benign alternative to opioids, without the risks and devastating side effects of opioids.” These unscented patches can desensitize aggravated nerves and provide numbing relief generally within an hour of application.

April is National Oral Health Month By Dr. David Remaley Each year the American Dental Association uses the month April for observing National Oral Health Month. We all know that oral diseases are the most common chronic childhood disease. National Oral Health Month is observed with the aim of promoting the candid smile of a child. It has a great importance for increasing* oral health awareness. Every year American school children miss more than 5.1 million hours of class time because of oral problems. The statistics also show that about 17 million American children skip all kinds of oral health care. About 44% of American children also face pediatric dental problems before beginning school for the first time. National Oral Health Month helps to increase* consciousness about these problems. As a part of the programs, children receive oral treatment at their school. National Oral Health Month aims to raise awareness among both children and adults about the importance of good oral hygiene. What Does Oral Health Actually Mean? Oral health is personal care and cleanliness of the teeth and mouth. Many people think that oral health is only related to the teeth, but oral health is defined as keeping the mouth and teeth clean by various means. More simply, we can say that oral health is the overall hygiene of the mouth. Health and clean teeth depend on a clean and healthy mouth. Today, many measures are available for complete oral care. Using the proper methods of brushing and flossing helps to prevent decay of the teeth and germs in the mouth. One thing that should be kept in mind is that oral health protection is imperative for people of all ages. Signs of Bad Oral Health? Taking care of oral health is very important for people of all ages. About 25% of American people begin to experience the degeneration of oral health

after the age of 65. So, it is very necessary to practice good oral hygiene. Here are some of the tips for good oral health. Cavities: People think that oral health care is only for adults, but all ages must DR. REMALEY practice oral hygiene. Adults eat more rich foods than children. For example, they eat fast food, carbonated drinks, candy, etc. This can harm your teeth very badly. It creates small holes in your teeth. Only complete oral care can ensure your good oral health. Bad Breath: If you want to avoid embarrassing bad breath then you should practice good oral health care. Generally, food particles are stuck in the mouth and this can create bad breath. To get rid of bad breath, good oral health is very necessary. Gum Disease: Gum disease means inflammation of the internal tissues of the mouth. Germs can harm the tissue around the teeth. Different types of bacteria help to create the infections of the tissue. Dental Erosion: In this present day, erosion of teeth is very common. An acid that is created from food that is stuck between your teeth can be the main cause of erosion of the enamel. Your teeth become sensitive when you lose* the enamel on them. Acne – how can a dermatologist help? By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta If you have a dramatic teenager in your household, the smallest blemish might seem like a medical emergency. But a single clogged pore does not usually warrant medicalizing a situation. When should someone see a dermatologist? If acne is bad enough to be causing scars, then it is worth a trip to a dermatologist. It is no surprise that large nodules and cysts can result in pock marks. However, scarring acne can also result from relatively shallow whiteheads (pustules) or from deeper inflammatory red bumps. Dermatologists classify scars into different types such as rolling, boxcar, or ice pick scars, and we recommend different treatments for each. If acne seems to be healing with scars, then it is time to seek some help – and quickly. It is much easier to prevent acne with safe and effective medications in the dermatologist’s pharmacopeia than it is to address and improve scars after they are already long-present and established. For anyone concerned with their life-long appearance, scarring acne should be thought of as a medical emergency. What about over-the-counter (OTC) remedies? Are they just as good? Most OTC acne treatments use exfoliating and cleansing mild acids such as salicyclic acid or chemicals that decrease oil production, kill bacteria and cleanse pores such as benzoyl peroxide. Recently, a cousin of vitamin A called adapalene became available over the counter. It is a “retinoid” that decreases oil production and helps with most shallow acne. All of these medications are often an excellent starting point for acne that appears mild, shallow and non-scarring. But each has its idiosyncrasies and caveats. For example, retinoids can be very drying, and if someone does not ease into them and avoid lips and creases then the skin can easily become too dry and irritated. Even for mild acne, your dermatologist will likely be able to provide tips and tricks that will improve your success with over the counter options. For moderately severe acne, courses of oral or topical antibiotics and prescription-strength retinoids such as tretinoin or tazarotene are often necessary

to improve one’s skin and prevent scarring. These medications improve your skin as long as you use them, but acne will come back unless you grow out of it on your own. For this reason, acne treatments often DR. TAYLOR become part of one’s daily regimen like brushing your teeth until, typically in late teenage years or early 20s, you grow out of your acne. Some female patients have acne that is worse around the time of their menstrual cycle or particularly affects the jawline and chin. This acne often responds well to medications that block androgens (male hormones such as testosterone). This can be achieved either with certain oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) or anti-androgen blood pressure medications like spironolactone. For very severe or stubborn acne, there is isotretinoin – commonly known by one of its brand names – Accutane. Isotretinoin is the only true “cure” for acne that dermatologists typically use. Isotretinoin can permanently change an individual’s skin and stop their tendency to develop acne. In fact, a 6-month course of isotretinoin can give someone a 75% chance or higher of never having significant acne again. In addition, there are certain creative ways that dermatologists manage acne or its aftermath. For the bride getting married in a few days who develops the worst possible bump at the most inconvenient time, a small steroid injection can sometimes save the day. For the patient who wishes to avoid medication, certain light therapies offered by dermatologists can provide a few months of clearance but often need to be periodically repeated. For the patient with acne scars but no more acne, fillers, microneedling, chemical or laser peels, subcision and even excision can dramatically reverse acne’s effects. If you or a loved one is scarring, suffering with acne or even looking for a few tips and tricks, consider seeing a board-certified dermatologist. Our expertise really can make a difference. We hope you enjoyed this bird’s eye view of acne. Please consider Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta for your skin care needs.

Pelvic pain is real and it often goes untreated Dr. Carla P. Roberts It may be out of embarrassment or out of ignorance, but for some women, pelvic pain continues to go untreated. Nearly 4 percent of all women are thought to have chronic pelvic pain (CPP) that persists for six months or longer. This pain is often felt in the pelvis, at or below the belly button, lower back, or the buttocks. CPP can accompany sexual activity, periods, urinating or having a bowel movement. The severity of pain is enough to cause many women to seek medical care, miss work, as well as school days for teen and college-aged women. But many brush it off and try to ignore it. Women in the U.S. spend billions of dollars annually for outpatient treatment of chronic pelvic pain, including gynecology office visits, outpatient laparoscopies and hysterectomies to ease pelvic pain. The socioeconomic impact of CPP in the U.S. is estimated at about $2 billion each year. What causes CPP can be complicated, including gynecologic, gastrointestinal, urinary and musculoskeletal. Gynecologic causes include endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, pelvic adhesions, pelvic con-

gestion syndrome, ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids. Any of these conditions can affect the function of the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus and interfere with pregnancy. Gastrointestinal causes most commonly include irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disorders. The most common urologic cause of CPP is painful bladder syndrome. Other causes include recurrent urinary tract infection, urethral diverticulum and bladder cancer. Fibromyalgia, or chronic muscle pain, is the most common musculoskeletal disorder that causes CPP. Others include pelvic floor muscle spasms, chronic abdominal wall pain, hernias and inflammation of the pubic bone, hip joint and muscle tendon abnormalities. Women with CPP need to discuss their symptoms with their gynecologist. After a thorough examination, they will begin diagnostic testing and refer to the appropriate specialists. Dr. Carla Roberts is a reproductive specialist, gynecologist and endocrinologist with Reproductive Surgical Specialists, 1800 Northside Forsyth Drive, Suite 380 in Cumming and associated with Northside Hospital Forsyth.

Spring tips for encouraging more physical activity By Home Helpers of Alpharetta We all know how important it is to get as much physical activity as possible as we age. Staying physically active helps us maintain a healthy weight, keeps joints healthy and strong, supports better mobility, and helps to reduce risk of a wide variety of health complications and issues for both mind and body. Many seniors, however, don’t like the idea of “structured” exercise. To encourage your loved one to stay physically active, find ways to keep them active in their regular routine to help them stay healthy without trying to force them into exercises that they might not enjoy. April is National Garden Month. Spring provides the perfect chance for you to integrate the joy of gardening into your senior’s routine to help them stay active. Gardening has a wide range of mental and emotional health benefits as well, giving them a sense of accomplishment and structure to their days and a beautiful environment everyone can enjoy. Some of the ways that you can integrate physical activity into a gardening routine include: • Stretching. Bending, reaching, and stretching are all valuable for supporting flexibility and range of motion. Gardening allows you to perform these movements in gradual, gentle ways that are effective but not intimidating. Take time to set reasonable garden-

ing goals every week to keep moving. • Lifting. Exercise with resistance, such as light weightlifting, is important not just for keeping your muscles strong, but also your bones. Lifting items such H. ELDRIDGE as pallets of flowers, full watering cans, and other items provides these benefits without overtaxing the body. • Cardio exercise. Gardening might seem easy, but anyone who does it regularly can attest to how active it truly is. G. Milton prevails over Roswell in rivalry renewal Eagles allow three hits, knock 4 doubles in win By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton used impressive pitching and an onslaught of hits to down Roswell 8-2 Saturday afternoon, the latest meeting in the rivalry series that spans nearly seven decades. It was the first game between the Eagles and Hornets since 2016 when both played in Region 5-AAAAAA. The Eagles entered the contest averaging seven runs per game and showed their offensive prowess with 12 hits, including four doubles. Shortstop Graham Pauley led the charge going 3-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. “Pauley is on fire,” Milton head coach Jeff Heusing said. “He’s been really consistent for us all year.” Brandon Butterwick went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored. Leadoff man Ben Harris was 2-3 with an RBI, Ryan Murphy had a double and RBI off two hits, and Chandler Woolridge had a double and scored. The Eagles were not just hot at the plate. Starting pitcher Ben Harris had a dominant performance, allowing one run and two hits with 10 strikeouts in five innings. Harris missed his last start ahead of spring break, so it was vital he got the start ahead of the final push of the regular season, Heusing said. “To get him back into rhythm ahead of region games is huge for us,” he said. “We got exactly what we needed out of him today.” Milton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Danny Grillo single and doubles from Woolridge and Murphy. Roswell cut the lead in half in the next frame with some help from the Eagles. Harris threw two walks and both runners advanced on a passed ball. One run scored on a balk. However, Milton opened the bottom of the frame with three straight hits, with Pauley’s first double of the game driving in two runs. A Roswell throwing error to first allowed the Eagles to go up 5-1. The Eagles added three more runs in a four-hit fourth inning. Roswell starter Grayson Gladu received the loss, allowing six earned runs off 11 hits in 3.1 innings. Matthew Nay relieved Gladu and gave up one hit in 2.2 innings. Heusing said the contest was good to rekindle the Eagles’ community rivalries. “It’s fun,” he said. “This is the first year we have played Alpharetta, Cambridge and Roswell.” Now with bragging rights over the Hornets, the Eagles will focus on their last six games of the season,

all against Region 5-AAAAAAA opponents. The Eagles currently sit third in the region standings, a halfgame behind Forsyth Central, their next opponent. “Our focus is to win two out of three games against each team,” Heusing said. “We have done that so far except against South Forsyth, and we play them one more time. I’d like to think we control our own destiny, and what we are looking for is homefield advantage in the playoffs, especially in that first round.” Milton will do so with some players returning from injury. The Eagles have lost catcher Drew Hamrock to a torn labrum, pitcher Mason Kenney to a meniscus surgery, and Danny Grillo has missed time with an arm injury. However, Heusing said both Grillo and Kenney should be back to form in the final two weeks of the regular season. For Roswell, Saturday’s

loss ended a three-game win streak. The Hornets return to Region 4-AAAAAAA play next week with a three-game series against defending 7A state champions Etowah. Roswell is fifth in the region standings, a game behind Etowah.

Cambridge baseball prepares for final push of regular season Bears sit second in highly contested region standings By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge baseball head coach Evan Tieles knows it is going to be a dogfight in the final stretch of Region 7-AAAAAA games, with just four of nine teams earning berths in the postseason. “You can tell from the first half of the region schedule,” Tieles said. “Everyone beat up on each other, and in my opinion no one ran away with it in those first eight games. It is definitely going to be competitive.” But for Tieles and the Bears, the adage of taking it one game at a time rings true. “Our focus is to control what we can

control and not let things hang over our heads,” the first-year head coach said. “We know we are talented and have a good team, as long as we play that way things will fall into place.” The Bears enter their final stretch of seven region games second in the region standings (9-10, 6-3), but five teams sit two games or fewer behind Cambridge. Though the Bears’ attention is focused on their 7-6A contests, its non -region schedule could prove beneficial. Cambridge opened the season with contests against some of the top teams in the state, including defending state runners up Woodstock and Blessed Trinity, and the challenging teams of

formed well,” he said. The Bears have shuffled their infield this season in attempt to find the best fit. Though Tieles said there is room for improvement defensively, the Bears have been challenged by limited field time due to weather. Tieles said he saw his team’s potential to put up big offensive numbers early in the season, and that has proved true as the Bears are averaging five runs per game. As of late, first baseman Mitch Fleming has been making his mark offensively and carries a .321 average with two home runs and nine RBIs. “He has really stepped it up,” Tieles said. “He started out the season struggling a bit, but once he got his timing he has become our hottest hitter.” The Titans will close out play against region opponents over the next two weeks. The Bears hold the 1-0 series lead over Chattahoochee, North Atlanta and Northview and will look to even their series against Dunwoody and Pope. “It is going to be competitive this final two weeks, but we can’t focus on that overall,” Tieles said. “As long as we can take care of what is in front of us and not ahead of us, we will be all right.”

Norcross (13-10), Lassiter (13-9), River Ridge (18-4) and Milton (12-7). “We played our first nine games against some of the top teams in all classifications,” Tieles said. “That benefit is really starting to show now in our region schedule. We’ve been tested and we are ready to make a push to the end of the regular season.” Though the Bears lost a large senior class from the 2017 season, they have had plenty of talent step up this year. Much of that talent resides on the mound, including starting juniors Blake Renner and Michael Polk and sophomore Casey Young, all righthanders. Renner has a 3-2 record with a 1.4 ERA, and Polk is 4-1 with a 2.3 ERA. Polk has started three games for the Bears and averages 6.75 strikeouts per game. “With our pitching, we didn’t have a lot of guys with varsity experience,” Tieles said. “But we have gotten some great pitching. Renner has been solid on the mound. He’s had some big starts in crucial moments. Polk is battling some nagging injuries but has battled through.” Tieles is also pleased with his bullpen through 19 games. “We’ve thrown them into some tough situations and they really have per-
