MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta man was arrested on April 2 for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident near the Crooked Creek subdivision in Milton.

A resident was attempting to turn into the subdivision when his car was struck on the passenger side by a passing vehicle which did not stop following the contact. The victim recorded the Jeep Cherokee’s tag number and later contacted police.

Dealership reports theft of wheels off vehicle ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An employee at the United BMW on Alpharetta Highway reported March 31 that the wheels and tires on one of their new models had been stolen overnight.

Sometime between 8:30 p.m. the previous night and 6 a.m. that morning, someone had entered the property and taken the parts from a new 2018 BMW 750i. The car had been parked in the “very back” of the lot by a curb.

It was sitting on four rocks when police arrived. No lug nuts were left around the vehicle, and the company had no surveillance cameras in that area.

The employee said that the lower side gate had been unlocked that night.

The total value of the missing parts was $4,000.

where he saw three subjects standing nearby drinking beer.

Juan Antonia Neri-Damian, 35, admitted to driving the vehicle around the time of the incident but did not recall striking a vehicle.

The Jeep’s tag matched that given by the victim and the officer observed damage on the left front bumper, “consistent with the damage” described by the victim.

Neri-Damian was arrested for failure to stop at an accident and driving without a license.

Civic, the husband, said he had parked it shortly after 2 a.m. at Piney Ridge Walk, leaving it unlocked, and entered the house. The wife’s purse was still in the car.

The purse contained a set of keys to the car, a credit card and the wife’s passport.

About six hours later, at 8 a.m., the couple awoke to discover the car was gone. Neither had noticed or heard anything out of the ordinary that night.

Three days prior, however, the couple had listed the vehicle for sale.

The wife cancelled her credit card prior to calling police.

Attentive woman thwarts attempted purse snatching JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — On March 26, a woman managed to successfully stop a man from stealing her wallet while grocery shopping.

While at the Kroger on State Bridge Road, the woman noticed that a man had walked up behind her shortly after 2 p.m. and had reached into her open purse. She saw him remove her wallet and move toward the front door.

The woman ran after the man, calling out “sir” several times. When she caught up to him, she grabbed his left arm before he could exit the store.

He then threw the wallet down and ran out.

Two witnesses described the man as white, 20-30 years old, slim build and approximately 5’8” tall. He was wearing a white and blue hoodie jacket, dark

jeans and a brown goatee.

Surveillance footage recorded the entire incident.

Owner reports theft of purse from vehicle ROSWELL, Ga. — A woman returned home from walking her dogs March 30, only to find that her purse had been stolen from the passenger side of her vehicle.

The woman told police that she usually leaves her garage door open with her car doors unlocked while she walks her two dogs. Nothing unusual had happened with the setup until that day.

There was no forced entry into the car and nothing looked out of place.

But the woman’s purse, which contained her credit cards and driver’s license, was gone.

Some fraudulent transactions were already made to the cards that same day.

Man allegedly bites deputy during arrest FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A 24-yearold Dawsonville man was arrested recently after he fought back with deputies and bit one while they were putting handcuffs on him.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Queens, N.Y. My parents still reside in Bayside Queens—where I grew up. I only left home to attend college at Penn State University and then medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

When did you discover medicine and decide to make it your career?

My mother is a pediatrician, and I always admired how much she enjoyed her work. That led me into wanting to go into medicine. I knew at a pretty young age that I wanted to be a doctor, likely around 9th grade or so.

How did you discover allergy medicine and decide that it was the right specialty for you?

In my first year of residency at NYU, a fellow resident told me to check out the field of Allergy/Immunology. I learned I get to take care of both children and adults as well as get to know families (as allergies tend to be hereditary). I did few rotations and really fell in love witht the field. To this day, I’m very happy I chose this path and hope to practice as long as I can.

Do you have a mentor or someone who has been instrumental in your career?

Again, It would be my mother. She loved what she did and it was also how she provided for our family.

Will you tell us a little bit about your family?

My wife is a high school teacher. She taught at both Miton and Cambridge and now works partime in my practice. I have 3 children, Christina, 10 years old; Jaya, 8; and TJ, 7. We live in the area, a community called Harrington Falls in Alpharetta. All 3 children attend Alpharetta Elementary (Go Eagles – both AES Eagles and Superbowl champs – Philadelphia Eagles – my wife is a hardcore Philly fan).

What can we do to help treat these springtime allergies?

I would recommend you watch the pollen counts to help gage what the environment would be like.

I would try to minimize exposure , possible by driving with the windows up as well as keeping the windows closed at home. Saline rinses are also a natural way to help clear your sinuses of pollen and mucus. Also there are good over the counter medications such as the antihistamine and nasal steroid sprays.

What if none of this is working and still miserable in the spring?

Then, you should likely go see an allergist. There are many other treatments, such as immunotherapy than can desensitize to the pollen. Most of my patients who are on allergy shots are doing much better with the spring pollens.

Any other tips?

Don’t let your spring be miserable. See your doctor and get on the proper treatment to enjoy the springtime.

Milton completes Milton may backtrack on Mayfield sidewalks newly adopted tree ordinance Paths improve walkability in Crabapple

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton took a significant step in its effort to create more walkability in Downtown Crabapple with the recent completion of sidewalks along Mayfield Road. The newly constructed pathways run from Mid Broadwell Road to the Charlotte Drive on both sides of Mayfield Road. Construction was completed March 23 and the entire project is slated to be finished this July.

“The Mayfield Road sidewalks are a key connection to creating more walkability in the Crabapple area,” said Sara Leaders, the city’s transportation engineer. “The sidewalks provide an expansion of the existing Crabapple pedestrian network, and we will continue to build on this network with new development and roadway projects in the area.”

The project hails back to a $500,000 federal grant awarded to Fulton County in 2004 for a streetscape project in Crabapple.

Those funds were later transferred to Milton after the city incorporated. Milton provided a 20 percent match.

According to a statement from the city, “GDOT worked with Milton to

allow time for the required matching funds to be budgeted and for city staff to review the overall Crabapple area plans before initiating the project.”

The city began the design phase in 2014 and sought construction bids in 2017. Milton chose Excellere Construction LLC with a maximum contract price of $497,481.

Repaving of Mayfield along the sidewalk route was completed April 6. The detour circumventing the construction area, which began last December, is no longer needed, city leaders said. However, future minor traffic interruptions are possible as the contractor installs the remaining aspects of the project and completes striping on the roadway after it is cured.

The installation of the underground electronics for future lighting along the path has also been completed.

Alpharetta recently finalized a major sidewalk along its sections of Mayfield Road from Chantilly Drive to Bates Road. Those paths run adjacent to a 12-acre park that Milton and Alpharetta jointly acquired last year. Leaders said a possible connection from the Downtown Crabapple sidewalks to Alpharetta’s paths along Mayfield is being coordinated.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Just over two months after adopting a new, more stringent tree ordinance, the city is back to the drawing board after finding the new stipulations may be too restrictive.

After more than a year of meetings with residents, city staff and an urban forester consultant, the City Council approved the updated regulations on Feb. 5.

But a few weeks later, Milton broke out its erasers and red pens to make dozens of changes and drafted an new ordinance that was under first presentation at Monday’s City Council meeting.

The city began reviewing the ordinance amid an outcry from a local developer that his projects were “dead in the water” if they were to meet the new requirements.

Though developers will still have to use some creativity to adhere to the measure, the new drafted plan addresses multiple language and requirement issues that could make it more of a workable ordinance for builders if approved.

As drafted, the proposal lessens the burden on developers by reducing the required tree canopy coverage in some of the city’s zoning districts, deletes certain tracts of land from inclusion in the canopy calculations and sets lower minimums for undeveloped residential lots.

Under the revision, the minimum canopy requirements would be reduced in the city’s community business district by 30 percent and by 10 percent in the medium density transect zone.

The draft also addresses a change in how the city calculates density on tracts where tree growth could pose hazards or could impact utilities, including septic lines.

Local developer Scott Reese said last month that with a large home and its septic field — and other surfaces that must be devoid of trees such as driveways or pools — reaching a 60 percent canopy is “virtually impossible.”

In the city’s new draft, septic fields, detention ponds, lakes and infrastructure easements will not be included in calculations to determine minimum canopy coverage.

The proposed plan also more thoroughly defines agricultural uses in the city’s rural zoning districts, including horse farms.

However, if those operations do not begin within two years of development or cease over any two-year period, the waiver is invalidated, and the minimum canopy of that parcel’s zoning designation will be enforced.

The alterations also include canopy requirements for undeveloped residential lots. Lots less than one-third of an acre will require no more than 20 percent canopy coverage. No greater than 50 percent canopy will be required on lots greater than one-third of an acre but less that one acre.

Currently, the ordinance requires that subdivisions must meet the canopy requisites for each lot and the entirety of the subdivision. If the new ordinance is approved as drafted, that restriction will apply to either each lot or the subdivision as a whole.

The draft also deletes the requirement that parking lots must adhere to a 60 percent canopy coverage.

The minimum requirements for other undeveloped residential parcels will be based on zoning, with a reduction of up to 15 percent from the requirements of that zone’s requisite.

The drafted plan gives the city’s community development department the authority to waive any provision within the ordinance “where such a waiver is consistent with the purpose and intent of this ordinance and is in the best interest of the public health, safety and welfare.”

The updated ordinance will go before the City Council for a vote. The next regularly scheduled meeting is April 23.

Schools to receive full state funding in FY19 Elimination of ‘austerity cuts’ means $7M more for Fulton Schools

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The Fulton County School System is welcoming news that the long-standing austerity cuts to the state education budget are over – at least for Fiscal Year 2019 – restoring full state funding to school districts for the first time in years.

In one of his final education-based acts before leaving office at the end of the year, Gov. Nathan Deal amended the state’s mid-year budget to include an additional $167 million for K-12 education in FY2019. The additional funding comes from higher than anticipated revenues. “[This] will ensure the state is fully funding the Quality Basic Education funding formula and providing local school systems with 100 percent of the state’s share in financing for local schools,” Gov. Deal said in a statement released March 26.

The QBE was adopted by the Georgia Legislature in 1985 to provide a basic level of state funding to public schools based on enrollment and other factors.

It has not been fully funded since 2002 when the Legislature implemented “temporary austerity cuts” following the economic downturn beginning in the early 2000s.

Since 2010 when the cuts became permanent, nearly $1 billion in state funding owed to school systems has been withheld, forcing districts to turn to local tax revenues, drain reserve funds, or implement furloughs and other cost-cutting measures to operate their schools.

In the Fulton County School System, austerity cuts since 2003 have totaled nearly $400 million earned —but withheld – through the QBE. Fulton Schools was among the more fortunate districts in the state, relying on healthy reserve funds and property tax revenues to alleviate the reliance on state funds.

Even so, the district was forced to cut programs, including elementary band and orchestra, increase class sizes and cut hundreds of staff positions to weather the economic storm.

For FY19, Fulton Schools will keep more than $7 million in planned austerity cuts following Deal’s actions.

“We are currently in the FY19 budget process and elated the governor has chosen to restore money to our district and fully fund QBE,” said Robert Morales, chief finance officer for Fulton Schools.

Deal inherited the education austerity measures when he took office in 2011 and has worked to reduce the $1 billion annual gap since day one.

State education leaders applauded his commitment to directing more money to education in every year of his tenure.

“Gov. Deal inherited an austerity cut

of over one billion dollars,” said Angela Palm, director of policy for the Georgia School Boards Association. “He never added to it; but he started reducing it as soon as the state’s revenue started increasing. So, it is fitting that in his final year, he gets to end the cut and fund the QBE formula.”

The austerity measures remain a part of the education funding formula, so Deal’s actions may not be permanent for districts after FY19. Future economic issues or other legislative priorities could bring the cuts back.

“All parts of the state’s budget are subject to the appropriations process,” explained Meghan Frick, spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Education. “[This restoral] is specific to FY 19.

The funding for QBE is made through recommendation of the governor and enactment by the Legislature.”

Education advocates hope future state leaders and legislators continue the focus on education.

“Our public schools have faced grave financial challenges over the years, and despite those odds, schools have persevered,” said Valarie Wilson, GSBA executive director. “We have much work to do and the stakes are higher than they have ever been.”

Book report: ‘Loneliness’ So, often I tell myself that after I read a book I should make some notes on any significant passages or ideas, so that next week, when someone asks me what the book was about, I may be RAY APPEN able to respond. I Publisher ray@appenmediagroup.com hate it when I have read a book and cannot recall anything about it other than the general theme or plot. This short/long-term memory loss thing is frustrating and a bit ironic. It was just a couple years ago that I was on a binge reading about “memory” and especially how to retain it! I guess it didn’t work very well.

Anyway, I just read “Loneliness” by John Cacioppo and William Patrick.

The book was non-fiction and focused on why we humans get lonely or depressed, and the authors reviewed a number of approaches to overcoming those conditions. I read it because I am on a binge reading about the impact of social media, technology and the effect our general pace of life has on our sanity. We seem to be disconnecting and disengaging with too much of life. The impact of that disconnect takes many forms, including but not limited to, isolation, suicide, depression and addiction. That is, we’re not doing well with this and I want to know more about it.

The book and the read is similar to Malcolm Gladwell’s books (“Tipping Point,” “Blink,” “Outliers,” etc.).

You get a dumbed-down but usually interesting and readable overview of a complex subject that often has a direct impact on your life, your decisions and how you process life in general.

It’s an entertaining blend of behavioral economics, psychology, sociology and storytelling!

Here are some of my takeaways from “Loneliness:” • In the end, most if not all, of our behavior is a response to our evolutionary instinct for survival. For thousands of years humans have always found safety in their tribes – in groups.

• We tend to stress out when we feel isolated or disconnected from a group.

• Stress undermines our capacity to make sound decisions – to process information. Some of us, in the extreme, respond by buying assault rifles and killing as many people as we can.

• When we’re outside the group, isolated to one degree or another, we are susceptible to manipulation by

You get a dumbeddown but usually interesting and readable overview of a complex subject that often has a direct impact on your life, your decisions and how you process life in general. others, which is part of the reason cults and extremist groups are able to successfully recruit members. People desperately need the support, the feeling of security and interaction provided by membership in a group or groups.

• To study and understand behavior or a condition such as loneliness, you need to be able to measure or quantify it some way. Cacioppo and Patrick reference and reprint (with permission) the “UCLA Loneliness Scale” which is a simple 20-question test. It’s an easy test and interesting to take.

• Meaningful engagement in a group makes us live longer. Cacioppo and Patrick reference studies that show that middle-aged and older men who are not meaningfully engaged in groups are 50 percent more likely to die than those who are engaged.

• Social isolation in the home is especially toxic for children. Single-parent homes, latchkey kids, spousal abuse and neglect take a great toll.

Children who live in social or physical isolation have greatly diminished chances in school, within their peer groups, and later, in relationships or careers.

• People need a tribe and they need a sense of purpose larger than them-

• The book spends considerable time talking about the substantial therapeutic benefits of active participation in charitable activities – in helping people.

• The final chapters talk about “today” – trends and context. In 1985 researchers asked a large pool of people “How many confidants do you have?” The most common response was three. In 2004 – nine years later – the same survey was conducted and the most common response was zero; 25 percent replied that they had no one at all with whom to talk openly and intimately.

• A 2004 study by the World Health Organization reported that almost 10 percent of Americans suffered from depression or bi-polar disorder.

• A 2007 survey by UNICEF of 21 wealthy nations reported that the U.S. came in second to last in terms of the welfare of its children; had the worst infant mortality rate; and had the second to worst exposure to violence and bullying, chaotic family structure and troubled relationships with family and friends.

The causes of much of this isolation and disconnectedness, as cited in the book, were numerous and ironically and frustratingly, part and parcel of “progress.” The American character that values independence and autonomous self-reliance has had a cost, and that is the loss of support from traditional sources including family, hometown, faith. Technology, mobility, careers, efficient modes of transportation, interstates, commoditized lifestyles, and our “flat world” have increasingly isolated us from what traditionally gave us cohesion, security and a meaningful sense of purpose. We need the stability and engagement of social gatherings on the porch, the street or the corner drugstore. We need our long–term relationships, engaged interaction with our neighbors. We miss the dignity, stability, and purposefulness found in multi generation households. And we need our faith.

We need to start reconsidering what is important – important individually and as a society. We need, as was suggested in the book “to start thinking more about investing in “social capital” as a societal good – something that is seen as a personal and collective necessity – a major issue of personal, societal and public health.” What we want, how we measure success and how we actually live needs to change.

Milton prevails over Roswell in rivalry renewal Eagles allow three hits, knock 4 doubles in win

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton used impressive pitching and an onslaught of hits to down Roswell 8-2 Saturday afternoon, the latest meeting in the rivalry series that spans nearly seven decades. It was the first game between the Eagles and Hornets since 2016 when both played in Region 5-AAAAAA. The Eagles entered the contest averaging seven runs per game and showed their offensive prowess with 12 hits, including four doubles. Shortstop Graham Pauley led the charge going 3-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. “Pauley is on fire,” Milton head coach Jeff Heusing said. “He’s been really consistent for us all year.”

Brandon Butterwick went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored. Leadoff man Ben Harris was 2-3 with an RBI, Ryan Murphy had a double and RBI off two hits, and Chandler Woolridge had a double and scored.

The Eagles were not just hot at the plate. Starting pitcher Ben Harris had

a dominant performance, allowing one run and two hits with 10 strikeouts in five innings.

Harris missed his last start ahead of spring break, so it was vital he got the start ahead of the final push of the regular season, Heusing said.

“To get him back into rhythm ahead of region games is huge for us,” he said.

“We got exactly what we needed out of him today.”

Milton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Danny Grillo single and doubles from Woolridge and Murphy.

Roswell cut the lead in half in the next frame with some help from the Eagles. Harris threw two walks and both runners advanced on a passed ball.

One run scored on a balk.

However, Milton opened the bottom of the frame with three straight hits, with Pauley’s first double of the game driving in two runs. A Roswell throwing error to first allowed the Eagles to go up 5-1.

The Eagles added three more runs in a four-hit fourth inning. Roswell starter Grayson Gladu received the loss, allowing six earned runs off 11 hits in 3.1 innings. Matthew Nay relieved Gladu and gave up one hit in 2.2

Heusing said the contest was good to rekindle the Eagles’ community rivalries.

“It’s fun,” he said. “This is the first year we have played Alpharetta, Cambridge and Roswell.”

Now with bragging rights over the Hornets, the Eagles will focus on their last six games of the season, all against Region 5-AAAAAAA opponents. The Eagles currently sit third in the region standings, a half-game behind Forsyth Central, their next opponent.

“Our focus is to win two out of three games against each team,” Heusing said. “We have done that so far except against South Forsyth, and we play them one more time. I’d like to think we control our own destiny, and what we are looking for is home-field advantage in the playoffs, especially in that first round.”

Milton will do so with some players returning from injury. The Eagles have lost catcher Drew Hamrock to a torn labrum, pitcher Mason Kenney to a meniscus surgery, and Danny Grillo has missed time with an arm injury.

However, Heusing said both Grillo and Kenney should be back to form in the final two weeks of the regular season.

For Roswell, Saturday’s loss ended a three-game win streak. The Hornets return to Region 4-AAAAAAA play next week with a three-game series against defending 7A state champions Etowah.

Roswell is fifth in the region standings, a game behind Etowah.

Deputies noticed the man was “displaying traits of anger” including raising his voice, starting to move more frequently and clinching his fists.

It was believed the man was going to either attempt to fight them or flee because of his actions. When he was told his license was suspended, officers tried to handcuff him, but he wouldn’t comply and he shoved the deputies away from him.

Deputies tried to get him to the ground to restrain him, but he kept pushing back. A deputy had to use his Taser three times on the man because he kept fighting back. After he was restrained in handcuffs, one deputy found he had suffered a bite on his right bicep.

A broken methamphetamine pipe was found in the man’s back pocket.

Additionally, methamphetamine was found in the car, along with scales, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested for simple battery against an officer, possession of methamphetamine, drug-related objects, driving under the influence, obstruction of law enforcement officers and driving while license suspended.

Farmers market has grown into Alpharetta’s rite of spring Popular event begins with Saturday launch

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Preparations are underway for one of Alpharetta’s biggest draws of the year.

The 13th annual Alpharetta Farmers Market kicks off Saturday with a list of some 70 vendors lining Old Canton Street downtown.

The market opens runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the venue is shut off from traffic to accommodate pedestrians.

Mayor Donald Mitchell will officiate for the formal opening ceremony.

John Ray, president of the Alpharetta Business Association which sponsors the event, said this year’s farmers market has added a revamped website that allows approved vendors to upload photos and information about the food they will have on hand.

The site also allows visitors to scroll through the offerings by food, recipes and vendors.

“Vendors are always looking for good farmers markets that draw a crowd, and they like the fact that we’re doing a better job of promoting them,” Ray said.

Each weekend, the market has drawn crowds in the thousands, Ray said, and it has become a mainstay on the city’s calendar of events. The business association launched the farmers market in 2006 as a way to draw

visitors to downtown, and its popularity has grown steadily.

“When we started it was about trying to bring business to downtown Alpharetta – to help with downtown business flow,” Ray said. “Getting people downtown is less of an issue now than it was 13 years ago, but what is an issue is maintaining that hometown feel that we want to have as we grow.

It’s just one of those things that makes Alpharetta a great place to live … and it draws people from outside to come in and spend their money.”

Farmers Market Manager Carol Anderson-Wood said the updated website will help vendors and customers alike.

“As an award-winning market, we wanted to make sure we had a stream-

lined system for our customers and the vendors, so we can focus on continuing our tradition of providing amazing produce and local products every week,” Anderson-Wood said.

One of the returning vendors is Southern Baked Pie Company, which joined the Market in 2017 after opening their brick and mortar location the year before.

“Joining the Alpharetta Farmers Market was one of the best things we did last year,” said Schrei Michael, Alpharetta store manager. “We received such great exposure at the market!

Customers that may not have made it to our store are now customers for life.

Even after the market closed for the season, we experienced strong sales through the winter months.”

Juncture apartment property sold in record transaction

The firm did not disclose the amount of the transaction but did say it sets a record price for the highest garden-style, suburban sale in metro Atlanta. Reporting firm Costar set the price at $141 million.

Chris Spain, Robert Stickel, Travis Presnell and Alex Brown represented the seller, JLB Partners, in the transaction. Nashville-based Carter-Haston Real Estate Services acquired the property.

Mass transit takes giant step with the ‘ATL’ After returning from cities like Chicago and New York, people always ask me, “Why can’t we build a rail system like they have up there?”

The answer is simple: It’s insanely GEOFF SMITH expensive.

And that’s not easy for MARTA to raise, considering the only funding it gets, other than through ridership fees, is mostly from sales taxes in Fulton, Dekalb and Clayton counties. To make any real progress toward expansion, the agency either needs to expand its presence to more metro counties or start receiving more capital subsidies from the state.

This session under the Gold Dome, it got both.

State Sen. Brandon Beach has been working doggedly for years to try to bring together all counties in the metro area in the name of mass transit. Beach once made a video showing how it took him almost a full day to travel from Cobb, through Fulton and Dekalb, to Gwinnett County using all the various transit options. His hard work paid off with the passage of a bill in the House and Senate that will bring together 13 metro counties and the various transit systems under one umbrella to be branded as “the ATL.” The bill would put all county leaders at the same table and give them the option to bring to a vote an increase in sales tax to fund transit expansion.

This is a huge infusion of potential capital fundraising going from three counties to 13 – two of which are Cobb and Gwinnett, although it is unclear about the commitment of Cobb.

The re-branding would start to take

hold in 2023, so don’t expect to see any major expansions any time soon.

But it does allow our planning agencies to start thinking bigger in their planning of where to expand.

It appears that the expansion of any heavy rail line farther north up Ga. 400 is however off the table. Fulton County helped facilitate a study that culminated in all the North Fulton mayors coming to the table to weigh options for future expansion of public transit.

Many thought expansion of the rail line to Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell was likely. But according to an article by Patrick Fox here at the Herald, Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann said there was only unanimous consent to go with a proposal that would add bus rapid transit service along Ga. 400 and Holcomb Bridge Road, and arterial rapid transit along Old Milton Parkway, Medlock Bridge Road and Roswell Road.

Those civic leaders inside the perimeter seem to be more receptive to rail expansion, especially since rail stations have become desired locations for corporate headquarters. Just recently State Farm and Mercedes-Benz

settled on sites for new regional headquarters largely because of their close proximity to a MARTA station. Other large development projects have begun next to and around other stations throughout the city.

In addition to Beach’s bill in the Senate, Gov. Nathan Deal allocated more than $100 million in his budget this year to go toward transit expansion.

It may not equate to a mile’s worth of heavy rail expansion, but it is a good sign that the state is focused on improving the metro area’s traffic problem.

Pelvic pain is real and it often goes untreated Dr. Carla P. Roberts It may be out of embarrassment or out of ignorance, but for some women, pelvic pain continues to go untreated.

Nearly 4 percent of all women are thought to have chronic pelvic pain (CPP) that persists for six months or longer. This pain is often felt in the pelvis, at or below the belly button, lower back, or the buttocks.

Acne – how can a dermatologist help?

But a single clogged pore does not usually warrant medicalizing a situation.

When should someone see a dermatologist?

If acne is bad enough to be causing scars, then it is worth a trip to a dermatologist. It is no surprise that large nodules and cysts can result in pock marks. However, scarring acne can also result from relatively shallow whiteheads (pustules) or from deeper inflammatory red bumps. Dermatologists classify scars into different types such as rolling, boxcar, or ice pick scars, and we recommend different treatments for each. If acne seems to be healing with scars, then it is time to seek some help – and quickly. It is much easier to prevent acne with safe and effective medications in the dermatologist’s pharmacopeia than it is to address and improve scars after they are already long-present and established. For anyone concerned with their life-long appearance, scarring acne should be thought of as a medical emergency.

What about over-the-counter (OTC) remedies? Are they just as good? Most OTC acne treatments use exfoliating and cleansing mild acids such as salicyclic acid or chemicals that decrease oil production, kill bacteria and cleanse pores such as benzoyl peroxide. Recently, a cousin of vitamin A called adapalene became available over the counter.

It is a “retinoid” that decreases oil production and helps with most shallow acne. All of these medications are often an excellent starting point for acne that appears mild, shallow and non-scarring. But each has its idiosyncrasies and caveats. For example, retinoids can be very drying, and if someone does not ease into them and avoid lips and creases then the skin can easily become too dry and irritated. Even for mild acne, your dermatologist will likely be able to provide tips and tricks that will improve your success with over the counter options.

For moderately severe acne, courses of oral or topical antibiotics and prescription-strength retinoids such as tretinoin or tazarotene are often necessary

to improve one’s skin and prevent scarring.

These medications improve your skin as long as you use them, but acne will come back unless you grow out of it on your own. For this reason, acne treatments often DR. TAYLOR become part of one’s daily regimen like brushing your teeth until, typically in late teenage years or early 20s, you grow out of your acne.

Some female patients have acne that is worse around the time of their menstrual cycle or particularly affects the jawline and chin. This acne often responds well to medications that block androgens (male hormones such as testosterone).

This can be achieved either with certain oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) or anti-androgen blood pressure medications like spironolactone.

For very severe or stubborn acne, there is isotretinoin – commonly known by one of its brand names – Accutane.

Isotretinoin is the only true “cure” for acne that dermatologists typically use.

Isotretinoin can permanently change an individual’s skin and stop their tendency to develop acne.

In fact, a 6-month course of isotretinoin can give someone a 75% chance or higher of never having significant acne again.

In addition, there are certain creative ways that dermatologists manage acne or its aftermath. For the bride getting married in a few days who develops the worst possible bump at the most inconvenient time, a small steroid injection can sometimes save the day.

For the patient who wishes to avoid medication, certain light therapies offered by dermatologists can provide a few months of clearance but often need to be periodically repeated. For the patient with acne scars but no more acne, fillers, microneedling, chemical or laser peels, subcision and even excision can dramatically reverse acne’s effects.

• Property assessments: Sparked by last year’s public outcry, state legislators passed a series of bills in March that establish a cap on how much a Fulton County home appraisal could rise each year for tax purposes.

Under the new formula, the Fulton County Assessor’s Office would take the base year for assessments – either 2016, 2017 or 2018, whichever is lowest – then adjust it according to the Consumer Price Index with a limit of a 3 percent increase. The cap applies for those residential properties taxed by cities, Fulton County and Fulton County Schools. Voters must approve the tax cap legislation at the polls this November, and, if passed, it will not go into effect until 2019.

Cambridge baseball prepares for final push of regular season Bears sit second in highly contested region standings

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge baseball head coach Evan Tieles knows it is going to be a dogfight in the final stretch of Region 7-AAAAAA games, with just four of nine teams earning berths in the postseason.

“You can tell from the first half of the region schedule,” Tieles said. “Everyone beat up on each other, and in my opinion no one ran away with it in those first eight games. It is definitely going to be competitive.”

But for Tieles and the Bears, the adage of taking it one game at a time rings true.

“Our focus is to control what we can control and not let things hang over our heads,” the first-year head coach said.

“We know we are talented and have a good team, as long as we play that way things will fall into place.”

The Bears enter their final stretch of seven region games second in the region standings (9-10, 6-3), but five teams sit two games or fewer behind Cambridge.

Though the Bears’ attention is focused on their 7-6A contests, its non -region schedule could prove beneficial.

Cambridge opened the season with contests against some of the top teams in the state, including defending state runners up Woodstock and Blessed Trinity, and the challenging teams of Norcross (13-10), Lassiter (13-9), River Ridge (18-4) and Milton (12-7).

“We played our first nine games against some of the top teams in all classifications,” Tieles said. “That benefit is really starting to show now in our region schedule. We’ve been tested and we are ready to make a push to the end of the regular season.”

Though the Bears lost a large senior class from the 2017 season, they have

had plenty of talent step up this year.

Much of that talent resides on the mound, including starting juniors Blake Renner and Michael Polk and sophomore Casey Young, all righthanders.

Renner has a 3-2 record with a 1.4 ERA, and Polk is 4-1 with a 2.3 ERA. Polk has started three games for the Bears and averages 6.75 strikeouts per game.

“With our pitching, we didn’t have a lot of guys with varsity experience,” Tieles said. “But we have gotten some great pitching. Renner has been solid on the mound. He’s had some big starts in crucial moments. Polk is battling some nagging injuries but has battled through.”

Tieles is also pleased with his bullpen through 19 games.

“We’ve thrown them into some tough situations and they really have performed well,” he said.

The Bears have shuffled their infield this season in attempt to find the best fit. Though Tieles said there is room for improvement defensively, the Bears

have been challenged by limited field time due to weather.

Tieles said he saw his team’s potential to put up big offensive numbers early in the season, and that has proved true as the Bears are averaging five runs per game. As of late, first baseman Mitch Fleming has been making his mark offensively and carries a .321 average with two home runs and nine RBIs. “He has really stepped it up,” Tieles said. “He started out the season struggling a bit, but once he got his timing he has become our hottest hitter.”

The Titans will close out play against region opponents over the next two weeks. The Bears hold the 1-0 series lead over Chattahoochee, North Atlanta and Northview and will look to even their series against Dunwoody and Pope.

“It is going to be competitive this final two weeks, but we can’t focus on that overall,” Tieles said. “As long as we can take care of what is in front of us and not ahead of us, we will be all right.”
